Manufacture of high-grade ferromanganese; as a rule; requires a low-phosphorus-manganese ore with 45 to 55 percent Mn, chiefly obtained in the Soviet Union, the British Dominions, and Brazil. Also, low-manganese ores have already been used for ferromanganese production, especially in North America .and Germany. During World War I, a process was developed in which a high-phosphorus ferromanganese or spiegeleisen was prepared in the blast furnace from law- or high-phosphorus manganiferous ores, then low-phosphorus manganese slag was prepared by refining under an acid slag, and this material was, worked into a low-phosphorus ferromanganese in the blast furnace.9/ Manufacture of useful manganese ores from a phosphorus-bearing spiegel with 12 to. 15 percent Mn, 4.5 percent C,, and 0.5 percent P by slagging in a refining furnace was reported by Joseph, Barrett, and Wood.10/ The spiegel was refined to 0.75 percent Mn, 3.4 percent C, and 0.45 percent P. Thereby, a slag with about 43 to 58 percent Mn and, about 10 percent Si02, was obtained. Hotter melts gave a smaller phosphorus content in the slag than cold melts. In addition, the phosphorus content of the slag varied with the manganese content of the intermediate metal.

The Bureau of Mines developed a method to melt and cast specimens of hafnium- carbon alloy and studied their properties . A rotating - ladle vacuum or inert atmosphere arc furnace was designed , special electrodes and molds were developed , and operating procedures were worked out for casting small shapes . The cast specimens were evaluated according to their carbon content for melting point , density , microhardness , electrical resistivity , and oxidation resistance . Lattice dimensions were determined , and metallographic specimens were prepared . Photomicrographs were taken of specimens containing 2.72 , 5.50 , 6.47 , 9.97 , 12.8 , and 15.7 weight - percent carbon , and their grain structures were compared .

"INTRODUCTION Silica and kaolin (a layer aluminosilicate) are among the major constituents of most coal mine dusts.' Whereas kaolin is cytotoxic in vitro but nonfibrogenic in vivo in humans and experimental animals,2-4 the cytotoxic and fibrogenic potential of silica is rather well established.5 Wallace and co-workers 6-8 have studied the cytotoxic potentials of both native and surface-modified silica and kaolin and inferred that retoxification is slow in the case of occluded silica vis-à-vis native silica. Recent epide¬miological studies indicate that silica concentration alone in a mine dust, as determined by transmission IR spec¬troscopy (TIRS), does not correlate well with the pro¬gression of coal workers' pneumoconiosis. 9 This obser¬vation has led to the suggestions that silica particles occluded by clays such as kaolin may not be fibrogenic. This proposal requires accurate estimations of kaolin, silica, and occluded silica. The current method of silica analysis in a mine dust sample employs TIRS of the 797- cm -1 band of silica, although its accuracy, as well as that of x-ray diffraction studies, is no better than 25 % , even in a laboratory-generated dust.° In this paper we have employed the techniques of diffuse reflectance spectros¬copy (DRS) and photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS), in conjunction with an FT-IR spectrometer, for the quan¬titative determination of silica in laboratory-generated silica-kaolin mixtures.One of the main advantages of DRS and PAS is that, in these techniques, problems arising from sample prep¬aration of the KBr-based disks used in TIRS are avoided. There are, however, several other considerations (e.g., particle size effects and saturation phenomenon) which complicate the use of DRS and PAS for quantitative work. 10-25 In this paper, we have carried out a systematic comparison of the quantitative abilities of the two tech¬niques, as applied to the silica-kaolin mixtures, with par¬ticular attention to the saturation behavior of several bands with different absorption coefficients. In particular, we show that a weaker band for silica at 1875 cm-1 is suitable for quantitative purposes, and that quantitative accuracy is higher in DRS than in PAS. The Long Swamp RARE II area contains no prospects, claims, or mines. It has a low potential for ore deposits. There are no geothermal, oil, or gas leases in the area. APPRAISAL There are no mining districts in the study area. The nearest is Chewack Mining District, which is 6 mi (9.6 km) north of the area. This district had numerous claims located for tungsten; the principal tungsten ore mineral was wolframite. Wolframite was found here in 1898 by surveyors of the International Boundary Commission. The area was staked in 1908 and developed during 1915 and 1916. Only in 1936 was ore shipped; the 30 ton (27.2 t) shipment proved to be unprofitable for the claimants (Culver, 1945, p. 41).

The Mesabi iron district of Minnesota has a potential production of over 50 million tons of iron ore annually. The large shipments of ore each year are gradually depleting the reserves, and if the present rate of production is to be maintained there must be a growth in the present available ore supply. Growth is a natural course. The growth of a city may be affected by the addition of city blocks or by the improvement of utilities necessary for its betterment. These may go on in the order named or concurrently. The city-block type of growth of the Mesabi has been tremendous, and the "betterment" type has followed in due course. Probably the former has reached its limit, and if so, more time will be allotted to the latter. It is not the intent of this paper to present either a eulogy of the wonderful mining methods or a history of the milling, but it is pertinent to say that if the lean-ore area continues to produce, the continuance will be more the result of further improvement of milling methods now well under way than of extension, of boundaries by the city block plan of growth. In an examination of the western end of the Mesabi district one finds sludge basins containing millions of tens of millable ore rejected by washing plants which were built for economy in operating cost and with little thought of conservation, and rich tailings piles of jigging plant rejects. In addition, there is an appreciable tonnage of bowl rake products so low-grade that it requires mixing with the best ore of the district to make it merchantable.

This report describes open, sublevel, and shrinkage stoping at the Greenwood mine, operated by Inland Steel-Co. The iron ore mine is in Marquette County, Mich., about 6 miles southwest of Ishpeming (fig. 1). The Greenwood is one of three active underground hard-ore mines on the Marquette range, the others being the Cliffs-Shaft and the Champion mines. The operation reflects an achievement in exploiting small, difficult-to-mine hard-ore bodies lying beneath a 200-foot overburden of glacial drift, which is partly water bearing. This report can indicate only briefly the efforts of personnel in overcoming adverse conditions in mining more than 2 million tons of ore, 80 percent of which was in lump form, for open-hearth production of steel. Significant data presented include descriptions of the principal mining methods employed, sublevel and shrinkage stoping; percent aged mining costs for the entire year 1957, covering both direct mining costs and general expenses; and performance records in units of labor, power, and supplies.

A recent survey of pumping plants in the anthracite region of Pennsyl¬vania showed that more than 90 percent of the pumps in use are the horizontal centrifugal types (1).2/ This report on the design and operation of centrifugal pumps should be helpful to engineers of the region who must select pumps that are best suited to particular pumping conditions in anthracite mines. Before a centrifugal mine pumping plant is designed, the special features of the pumps that may be used should be considered, especially when low repair costs and continuous operation during flood periods are prerequisites, and when acid mine water is to be pumped. Two important advantages of a centrifugal pump are that the flow is continuous and that it can be throttled without developing excessive pressure or overloading its driving unit.

The Sweetwater, Castro, Trinidad, New London, and Hilltop chromite properties are situated within an area 8 miles long and 1 mile wide between San Luis Obispo city and Morro Creek, San Luis Obiso County, Calif. Development work at this group of mines was a part of a long-range project by the Bureau of Mines to develop strategic mineral reserves in the United States in accordance with the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939. The junior author of this report participated in the preliminary examinations made in 1941 of the chromite deposits that later in the same year were the subject of more intensive investigation under the immediate supervision of the senior author. The ore occurs in lenses and kidneys in masses of dunite contained in large poridetite areas. Production has boon in the form of lump ore and concentrates from disseminated ore. Work by the Bureau of Miner included surveying, mapping, trenching, sampling, and assaying. It is summarized separately in the text under the name of each mine investigated. The report gives a brief history of the district, describer the concentrating plant of the Castro Associates, and gives detailed results on sampling and assays at the various proportion.

In order to extend or delimit the known ore reserves adjacent to the Comet Coalition property on the western slope of the Highland Peak Range about 8 airline miles west of Pioche, Nev., the Bureau of Mines undertook an exploration project of diamond drilling. Production figures from this property, formerly known as the Schodde, are not available, but it has been reported that small amounts of rich silver and gold ore were Shipped by wagon to a smelter in the Salt Lake valley during 1900-1910. Small shipments were reported for the period 1915-1927, also. A study of the Pioche District by the Federal Geological Survey in 1942 and 1943 was the basis for the exploration program of the Bureau of Mines in 1947 This program consisted of diamond-drilling three holes. The total footage was 2,967 feet. No. 1 hole was drilled 1,260 feet, a record depth for diamond drilling in the Pioche District. Silver-bearing lead-zinc sulfide ores are found in the Combined Metals limestone, known locally as the C.M. bed, These deposits have been formed by replacement of the limestone that is inclosed in the Pioche shale.

The effect of load rate on the load-carrying capabilities of wood cribs is investigated in this Bureau of Mines study. The modulus of deformation (stiffness) of wood crib blocks has been shown to increase with increases in rates of load application, causing larger load reactions for increases in convergence rates. Since wood cribs are tested in the laboratory at convergence rates that are orders of magnitude faster than typically would occur underground, wood cribs tested in the laboratory will react larger loads than the same cribs would react underground for the same displacement. Tests conducted in the Bureau's mine roof simulator on green wood crib blocks indicate that the increase in stiffness for increasing load rates diminishes at displacement rates beyond 0.1 in/min, making crib load nearly independent of load rate for rates faster than 0.1 in/min. Seasoned wood specimens were not as con-sistent in load-rate dependency. Some possible explanations of observed load-rate behavior on wood crib specimens are also postulated in this paper.

"INRODUCTIONSedimentary deposits of titaniferrous magnetite occur at various localities in the eastern foothills of the Teton Ranse in Deer Lodge County, Mont. The Choteau deposit was examined by a Bureau of Mines engineer in August 1942. An exploration project was recommended.Core drilling exploration was begun in June 1945; it was concluded in August 1945, Seventy-six holes were drilled. This report presents the data obtained by the Bureau of Mines exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral, deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective, the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contri¬bution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, Chief, conducts preliminary examination, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final, report. The. Metallurgical Branch, R. G. The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars arc characteristically of the 'fire door" type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public, and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes arc added to the face equipment machinery for which they arty required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in "Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self-Propelled Electric Face Equipment/Automatic Emergency Brakes" by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. I. Judy (our consultant), etc:

Laboratory batch and pilot plant flotation tests were made to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial grade kyanite from a quartzite- kyanite rock from the Graves Mountain, Ga., deposit. Best results in laboratory and continuous tests were obtained using sodium carbonate for pH control, citric acid for quartz depression, and oleic acid as the kyanite collector. Over 80 percent of the kyanite was recovered in a concentrate analyzing 56.8 percent Al203 and 3.8 percent hydrochloric acid soluble Fe203. Subsequent treatment of the flotation concentrate by magnetic separation reduced the acid soluble Fe2O3 to 0.6 percent and increased the alumina content to 59.2 percent. Acid leaching of the concentrate gave a product analyzing 59.7 percent Al203 and about 0.1 percent Fe203. As a result of the beneficiation research, a commercial kyanite flotation plant was completed in September 1962 by private industry.

"INTRODUCTION The Gibellini manganese—zinc-nickel deposits, are in southeastern Eureka County, Nev, T. 15 N., R. 53 E. M.D.B.M. 27.5 miles south of Eureka, the county seat.The partly explored deposits, locally known as the Black Iron or Gibellini property, were examined in May 1944 by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines, who recommended that the deposits be explored further by means of core drilling. The proposed program called for drilling six diamond—drill holes, or eight if necessary, and for trenching at two places — 200 feet northeast and 280 feet west of the shaft on the main deposit.In 1946 the project was set up, and In July, of that year diamond drilling as started. Six holes were drilled for a total length of 1,198.5 feet. No trenching or other exploratory work as done. Work on the project was stooped. October 30, 1946.OWNERSHIPAccording to county records, the property comprises a group of 13 unpatented lode claims, and ownership is divided among Louis P. Gibellini,Louis P. Gibellini and wife (both of Eureka, Nev.), and the International Smelting & Refining Co., of Salt Lake City, Utah. Five claims of the group - the Black Iron No. 1, Black Hill No. 2, Manganese No. 3, Flat No. 1, and Flat No. 2 - are owned by Gibellini. Three claims - the Black Hill No. 1, Black Iron No. 3, and Manganese No. 4 are owned jointly by Mr. and Mrs. Gibellini, and the International Smelting & Refining Co. owns the remaining five - the Black Iron No. 4 and No. 5, and Black Hill Nos. 4, 7, and. 9."

An ever-increasing demand for beryllium and beryllium alloys has directed attention to the milling of low-grade domestic deposits as a possible means of supplying part of the Nation's ore requirements. The United States generally produces less than 10 percent of its annual supply. For example, new supply in 1953 was estimated at about 9,250 tons, of which the United States imported 8,500 tons. Domestic production was only 750 tons.2/ Since record high prices for beryl in 1952 and 1953 did not greatly increase domestic product ion, the United States must develop mechanical beneficiation processes to use low-grade deposits and reduce dependence on foreign sources

The use of extended workdays or compressed workweeks (regular shift lengths exceeding 8 h) is attracting growing interest in many industries using continuous operations. While extended workdays promise increased worker satisfaction due to more days off, including weekends and holidays, there are legitimate concerns about the potential effects on the health and safety of such a schedule. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted a study at a Canadian underground copper, lead, and zinc mining operation that was designed to study the safety and performance implications of extended workdays. Measures were taken before and after a change from the old 8-h continuous schedule to the new 12-h continuous schedule, including behavioral performance measures to analyze perceptual-motor changes, continuous heart-rate monitoring and aerobic capacity to measure physical fatigue, a variety of self-report questionnaires to measure perceived adaption and satisfaction with the new schedule, and pulmonary-respiratory measures to examine air contaminant exposure. Based upon the overall acceptance of the new schedule by the workers and lack of change in fatigue-sensitive behavioral and physiological performance measures, this study recommends that the mine retain the 12-h schedule. However, certain precautionary measures are suggested to insure the safety of the workers.

The Colorado Minerals Co. calcite properties in Archuleta and Hinsdale Counties, Colo., (fig. 1) were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers in 1943. The demand for optical calcite during the war prompted the examinations and resulting development programs on the Meadows and Seavy ranch properties near Pagosa Springs, Archuleta County. Development was begun on the Meadows property in November 1943 and continued to the Seavy ranch property. The work consisted of stripping the overburden from the calcite areas and excavating pits and trenches with a bulldozer. The pits and trenches exposing the most promising calcite veins were then deepened by hand, and one shaft was sunk to a depth of 30 feet. A total of 36 trenches and 9 pits were excavated by bulldozer and. hand methods (figs. 2, 3, and 4). The calcite deposits occur as veins and irregular bodies filling fractures in the Mancos shale of Cretaceous age. The fractures persist for considerable distances along the strike, although the calcite filling may not be continuous for more than a few feet. The widths of individual veins range from a few inches to several feet. The calcite crystals uncovered at the surface and in pits, trenches, and shafts were found to be unsuitable for optical purposes because of fracturing and color in the crystals.

As an aid to studies of grinding, a batch laboratory classifier and elutriator has been developed at the U. S. Bureau of Mines Metallurgical Field Office at Moscow, Idaho, in cooperation with the University of Idaho. It is designed for use in conjunction with other batch laboratory apparatus, such as ball mills and flotation machines. It is shown in Figure 1. Description and Operation of Batch Laboratory Classifier The classifying column is a cylinder 4 feet 2 inches long, of 5 3/4-inch inside diameter, and terminates at its top in a cone or funnel 18 inches in diameter at the overflow elevation. The pressure chamber is of the same diameter as the classifying column, and has a conical bottom; it is provided with two openings, one in the cylindrical portion through which water is admitted, and the other, a small drain hole, in the apex of the conical bottom. The two compartments are bolted together and communicate with each other through the medium of a constriction plate provided with 3/16-inch holes spaced 1/2 inch apart. Constriction plates having any other percentage of opening may be substituted as the needs demand water is admitted to the compartment below the constriction plate at constant pressure. The volume of eater admitted is controlled with a valve. It should be mentioned that the classifying column at the bottom, just above the constriction plate, is glass.
