Between 1986 and 1989, at the request of the U. S. Bureau of Land Management, personnel from the U. S. Bureau of Mines Western Field Operations Center studied the highly-mineralized, 25,335-acre, Crack Canyon Wilderness Study Area (UT-060-028A), to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The 16-mi-long, 2-mi to 4-mi-wide stud/ area is on the southeast side of the San Rafael Swell, about 40 mi southwest of Green River, Emery County, southeast-central Utah. The study area is underlain by Mesozoic sedimentary beds. Uranium, the principle mineral resource, occurs in two formations. The principle uranium deposits are in mudstone, sandstone, and conglomerate lenses in the 22-mi-long outcrop of the Triassic Chinle Formation which parallels and straddles the northwest boundary of the study area, Some small low-grade uranium occurrences and an extensive gypsum deposit are hosted by the Jurassic-age rocks that underlie the southeast part of the study area.

The generation and disposal of solid waste from electric utility plants using a lime or limestone wet-scrubbing system and the potential effects on the environment were estimated for 1975 and 1980. The study indicated that in 1975 approximately 5.8 million tons of desulfurization solid waste (50 percent solids) will be generated. In 1980, when it is estimated that desulfurization will become commercially accepted, approximately 71.4 million tons of this material will be generated for disposal and/or utilization. The desulfurization waste material when combined with lime, fly ash, and water may have potential for use as a roadbase material, landfill reclamation, and synthetic aggregate.

"MANGANESE-SILOCON ALLOYS AS DEOXIDIZERSThe basic open-hearth process for steel mining requires large amounts of oxidized iron for oxidation of the elements carbon, silicon, manganese, and phosphorus which are to be removed from the metal. Some of this oxidized iron (FeO) dissolves in the metal during the refining process, Subsequent to the elimination of the elements named, a considerable amount of dissolved iron oxide must be removed before the metal may be cast into ingot form. The elements generally used, for iron oxide removal, or deoxidation, are silicon, manganese, and aluminum. Silicon and manganese are always alloyed with iron, either singly or in combinations of various compositions. Aluminum generally is used in a commercially pure state and sometimes in complex alloys. A double deoxidizer of manganese and silicon alloyed with iron for furnace deoxidation has been the subject of an extensive cooperative investigation between the United States Bureau of Mines, the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and the Metallurgical Advisory Board. Certain grader of steel, especially low-carbon rimming steels, require a low-carbon deoxidizer to keep the finished steel within the carbon specification after deoxidation. This Bureau of Mines report reviews and assesses the technology for preparing electrodeposited coatings of the platinum-group metals from molten alkali metal cyanide baths. Methods are described for the preparation and purification of the cyanide electrolyte. Vacuum drying, fusion, and purity of the cyanide salts are discussed. Use of a sodium borosilicate test tube as a sodium-ion-conducting membrane for the addition of the desired platinum-group metal is described. The optimum plating parameters of potential and current density for Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, and Ir coatings that result in the best deposits are given. A method for producing platinum-rhodium alloy coatings of predetermined composition is also described. The importance of careful substrate surface preparation is illustrated. While problems still remain with respect to coating porosity, careful application of the methods described permits the preparation of adherent, coherent electrodeposited coatings of the platinum-group metals.

This paper describing the mining methods of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The story of mining at Inspiration is of particular interest because, after 127,812,000 tons of low-grade copper ore were successfully mined, the mining method was changed from block caving to open-pit. As the open pit became deeper, many features of the former block-caving operation that were exposed elucidated concepts of the mechanics of caving that previously had been assumed but not observed. The conversion to open-pit mining was accomplished by unique combinations of equipment and the introduction of ingenious engineering and operating practices that have extended the expected life of the mine for many years.

Mixtures of zirconium diboride and refractory metals of group VI were resistance sintered to high - density compacts using modified electric welding equipment . To evaluate the use of chromium , molybdenum , or tungsten as binders for zirconium diboride the sintered compacts were examined in polished sections and tested for crushing strength , hardness , microhardness , oxidation rate , and resistance to mechanical shock . Chromium yielded the highest compressive strength , the greatest resistance to mechanical shock and oxidation , and a satisfactory Rockwell hardness . Molybdenum did not yield a satisfactory cermet . Tungsten yielded compacts having high microhardness but very low mechanical strength .

This information circular describes the application of modern methods and equipment in sinking a vertical, 916-foot-deep by 16-foot-diameter, concrete-lined access shaft for the Harold D. Roberts tunnel near Montezuma, Colo. Although the access shaft was merely a construction facility to expedite completion of a 23-mile water-diversion tunnel, a circular shaft of this type would be equally adaptable for mine development or other purposes. Comparable sinking methods and equipment could be used for similar shafts within a wide range of sizes and depths. SUMMARY In addition to excavation and support of the basic access shaft to tunnel grade, the overall sinking project involved initial preparation of a surface site and plant, subsequent construction of a tunnel-level station and loading pocket at the shaft bottom, and ultimate conversion of the basic shaft into a hoisting and access facility for tunnel operations. The sinking period for the basic shaft approximated one year. Actual tunnel operations through the converted shaft began on April 3, 1958, approximately 19 months after the project was initiated.

The study site in northeastern Illinois underwent surface mining for coal in 1943 and was reclaimed by the state of Illinois in 1972-1973. Additional soil amendments and seed were applied to the spoil surface in 1975-1980. Previous studies in 1975-1978 had shown that the surface spoil materials and five final-cut lakes at the site were quite acidic and the lakes contained high concentrations of sulfate and dissolved metals. Surface runoff water from monitoring plots in 1976 were only moderately acidic and the mean concentrations of most dissolved metals and sulfate in the runoff waters were less than 25% of the concentrations found in Lake B. By 1980, vegetation had become well established over most of the mined area. However, the five final-cut lakes (Lakes A-E) remained acidic. The purpose of the study reported here was to determine the physical and geochemical subsurface conditions of the spoil materials, the hydrologic flow system within the spoils, and the magnitude of acidic spoil leachate migration into the lakes and into the wetland prairie north of the mine site. Lakes A, B, C, and E were still very acidic in 1980-1981 (pH range: 2.9-3.4; aridity range: 110-860 mg/L as CaCO3). Lake B had the worst water quality, with mean concentrations of dissolved aluminum, iron, manganese, and sulfate of 75, 25, 37, and 3340 mg/L, respectively. Shallow groundwaters in spoil materials around Lake B had a lower pH and about two to four times greater concentrations of aridity, aluminum, manganese, zinc, and other metals and nearly 20 times greater dissolved iron than the water in Lake B. The shallow groundwaters in undisturbed soils and bedrock 10-30 m north of the mine site spoils generally were alkaline, but did contain occasional moderately high sulfate and metal concentrations. Pumping tests and recovery tests conducted in piezometers showed hydraulic conductivities of spoil materials ranging from less than 10- to 10-5 m/s; hydraulic conductivities of natural soils and bedrock were measured between 10-10 to 10-7 m/s. Water levels in spoil materials increased rapidly in response to rainstorm events and the recession curves were relatively quick to decline, lasting only two or three days. Quick infiltration of rainfall into the spoil surface and percolation down to the water table caused a rise in groundwater levels and movement of spoil groundwater into the lakes. This groundwater component in the lake water budgets could account for most of the water quality problems occurring in the acid lakes.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 has placed stringent limitations on the noise levels in which employees may work. This act can result in both increased labor costs because of noise-exposure time limitations and in high capital costs for modification of present equipment, and the design of new equipment, to comply with the law. The development of new noise-control systems is thus of immediate interest to industry. A current Research program at U. S. Steel is aimed at developing methods of controlling both the exhaust-air noise and the mechanical noise of a Stoper drill, a pneumatic percussive tool used for roof-bolting purposes in coal mines which has an approximate air consumption of 100 cubic feet per minute. This program is being performed under a contract between USS Engineers and Consultants, Inc. and the Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. In previous work at U. S. Steel, kidney-shaped mufflers were designed that wrap around the air leg of the drill for control of the exhaust noise. These mufflers were designed with the aid of a digital computer program that predicts the acoustic performance of mufflers.

Anticipating the need for convenient, economical, and safe means for disposing of combustible wastes contaminated with low-level activity, in connection with private and institutional uses of radioisotopes, the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) has provided the Bureau of Mines with funds to develop an incinerator for this purpose. A prototype incinerator, designated hereafter as BOMAEC-30, was designed, constructed, and tested, based on fundamental and applied research investigations of the combustion characteristics of rubbish and sawdust, which will comprise the bulk of contaminated wastes. No radioisotopes were used in the tests; the objective was to remove as much particulate matter from the products of combustion as possible. The prototype unit was designed to burn 30 pounds per hour, using 100 percent over fire air admitted tangentially in an all-metal, cylindrical combustion chamber. The gas-cleaning system consisted of special fabric bags and absolute filters.

This report describes an in situ combustion project and three waterflood projects in Allen, Anderson, and Wilson Counties, Kansas, that will be visited during the 1964 annual tour of the Kansas-Oklahoma Waterflood Association. Among the unique features of the projects are the movement of heavy crude oil through the reservoir and into the wellbore with energy furnished by burning a portion of the crude oil therein. Another feature is the simultaneous injection of C02 and water, through separate tubing into input wells during early development, to increase injectivity at moderate pressures, Discussion of individual projects includes information on their early history, source and treatment of injection fluids, oil production-decline curves, and the results of water injection on oil production.

The difficulties inherent in the production of alumina by the formation of potassium alum and its subsequent thermal dehydration and decomposition have been overcome , to a large extent , in a process developed at the Boulder City Station of the Bureau of Mines . This process is applicable to the reserves of alunite known to occur in several Western States and , possibly , to certain clay and low-grade bauxite deposits known to exist in this country . The operations sequence of the process is shown in the flow sheet (fig . 1) . Only those steps included within the heavy line are considered in this report . Four different procedures for dehydration of alum were investigated ; ( 1 ) Spray drying , ( 2 ) rotary - kiln drying , ( 3 ) dry grinding in a thermal ball mill , and ( 4 ) dehydration in the vertical- column flash dehydrator . Based upon fuel requirements and other practical considerations , the vertical- column dehydrator , or some modification of its operating principle , offers the botter possibility for commercial use .

This is one of a series of pacers being published by the United States Bureau of Mines, describing mining and milling methods at crushed-stone plants throughout the United States. These pacers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Although the publication of total production cost might not be advisable in some instances, yet a knowledge of operating costs is essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called o this differentiation in order that there will be no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations. This paper deals with the quarrying and crushing methods used at the Plainville plant of the New Haven Trap Rock Co., which produces annually between 275,000 and 300,000 tons of trap rock, Although pct the largest quarry operated by the company, it typifies the standard methods used by all the quarries in producing crushed stone and has one or two rather unique operating features. The cost of production at this plant is close to the average cost at all quarries of the company.

The Bureau of Mines experimentally burned Pittsburgh Seam coal and other combustible materials found in mines in order to obtain a better knowledge of their emission products. These experiments were conducted in the Bureau's intermediate-scale fire tunnel, which simulates environ-mental conditions in underground mines. Smoke characteristics, gas concentrations, mass loss, and ventilation were measured. From these values, heat-release rates, particle sizes, obscuration rates, combustion yields, and production constants were calculated. This information was sought as part of a comprehensive study of combustible materials that will ultimately advance the design of more efficient fire detection and suppression systems. The coal combustion measurements presented in this report, together with previous analyses of wood and transformer fluid fires form a data base by which future studies of other mine combustibles can be compared.

Numerous alternative processes have been proposed as being potentially more economical or less polluting than the traditional smelting of copper sulfide concentrates. One such process as recently developed in the laboratory by the Bureau of Mines is composed of a two-stage fluid-bed, oxidation-reduction roasting followed by ammoniacal leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. A copper-leaching recovery of 97.4 percent was obtained, and electrolysis of the acid strip solution deposited metal assaying 99.99 percent copper. The roaster gases contain over 95 percent of the sulfur at a concentration of 12 percent which is better suited for acid making or elemental sulfur production than conventional smelter gas. When considering byproduct recovery, a preliminary estimate indicates copper production costs are com-parable to the conventional smelters.

Accordingly, Dr. Pier and a large number of other men of the I.G. Farbenindustrie, A.G. plant at Ludwigshafen/ Oppau were further interrogated in July-1945. PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in hearing protective devices for use in different mining environments. RESEARCH SUMMARY: Previous NIOSH research shows that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals and that miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and sex. As described in the National Occupation-al Research Agenda, problems created by occupational hearing loss include(1) reduced quality of life due to social isolation and unrelenting tinnitus,(2) impaired communication with family members, the public, and coworkers, (3) diminished ability to monitor the work environment (i.e., warning signals, equipment sounds, etc.), (4) lost productivity and increased accidents resulting from impaired communication and isolation, and (5) expenses for workers’ compensation and hearing aids. Although eliminating hazardous noise is the long-term solution to the noise problem, miners will likely need to rely on personal hearing protection in certain situations for quite some time. However, it is well known that noise attenuation provided by hearing protectors as they are worn during everyday use is usually quite different (i.e., worse) than when tested under lab conditions. In addition, workers may refuse to wear their hearing protection for any number of reasons. This project was initiated to evaluate practical technological advances in hearing protectors, with an emphasis on optimizing the balance between effectiveness, comfort, over protection, and communication ability. The recently completed auditory research facility is now under-going the accreditation process conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology under the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program. Experiments are planned to investigate the factors that affect a miner’s ability to hear hazard and warning sounds (e.g., roof working, alarm signals, spoken communications, etc.). A service contract has been initiated to record and digitally store samples of typical warning sounds heard in an underground coal mine. This information will be analyzed in the lab to develop recommendations that can be offered to the mining community regarding correct earplug/earmuff usage to maximize there cognition of hazard and warning sounds while adequately protecting the miners’ hearing.

Studies on coal mine drainage sludge densification have led to the following conclusions: 1. Coal mine waters containing iron principally in the ferrous (Fea+) state can be treated by a modification of the commonly practiced lime neutralization process to yield a ferromagnetic sludge. The sludge, presumably composed in large part of a hydrated ferrosoferric oxide (Fe304.xH20), is much denser and faster settling than the ordinary "yellowboy" sludge obtained by lime neutralization and aeration at ambient temperatures. 2. The magnetic sludge preparation technique involves (quantitative) precipitation of iron (largely as Fe(OH)2) by the addition of hydrated lime to a pH of 8.5, separation of the resulting sludge from the aqueous phase, and heating of the sludge concentrate to at least 80 C (176 F), preferably higher, followed by mild aeration. 3. Magnesium, present as Mg2 in most coal mine drainage waters, inhibits the formation of the magnetic sludge. This inhibition can be adequately minimized by keeping the pH below 9.6 during lime addition (thus avoiding the coprecipitation of Mg(OH)2) and by separating the sludge from the bulk of the aqueous phase before the heating step, as indicated in (2) above. 4. Aluminum, commonly present in coal mine drainage waters, also inhibits the formation of the magnetic sludge. This inhibition is of practical significance when the molar ratio of aluminum/total iron is greater than 0.18. Below this value, sludges are still appreciably magnetic, but are bulkier and slower settling than those obtained when aluminum is absent. Unlike magnesium inhibition, aluminum inhibition cannot be minimized by the scheme indicated above, since aluminum precipitates as Al(OH)3 near pH 4 and remains dispersed within the sludge. 5. The limitation on aluminum content is probably the most serious restriction affecting the feasibility of the magnetic sludge process as presently conceived. Nevertheless, a limited review of available water quality data has indicated that, in terms of relative acid and iron loadings, a significant number of major coal mine discharges in the eastern Ohio River basin may be amenable to treatment by a magnetic sludge process. 6. Data from tests on the use of magnetic seeding materials indicate that seeding did not enhance the formation of a magnetic sludge under the experimental conditions employed.

This report present the results of a laboratory and field research program aimed at design and development of a torque-thrust controlled bolter with the capability to (1) predict the "quality of anchorage" attained while installing mechanical anchor roofbolts, and (2) improve the uniformity and tension levels achieved among a group of roofbolts. The prediction accuracy of the anchorage quality algorithm ranged from low to moderate because of the complexity and variability of the phenomena involved. The best roof support with mechanical anchor bolts was found to be achieved by simply installing them under ? proper torque-thrust control, and with ? a hardened washer under the bolthead. This procedure resulted in an improvement in uniformity of 3 times, along with an increase in mean tension levels of 75% over conventionally installed roofbolts.

In 1986, the Bureau of Mines conducted a probability sample survey, Mining Industry Population Survey, to measure such employee characteristics as occupation; principal equipment operated; work location at the mine; present job, present company, and total mining experience; job-related training during the last 2 yr; age; sex; race; and education. The population estimates are necessary to properly analyze the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) injury (includes illness and fatality data) statistics; that is, to compare and contrast injury rates for various subpopulations in order to identify those groups that are exhibiting higher than average injury rates. This report uses the survey's results to characterize the U.S. coal mining workforce from March through September 1986. A companion report, Information Circular (IC) 9193, "Characterization of the 1935 Metal and Nonmetal Mining Workforce:' provides similar information for the U.S metal and nonmetal mining industry.
