In This Chapter [Measuring the gas emission from the coal Methane at the top of the silo Methane at the load-out area and Actions taken after a silo explosion] Methane accumulations in coal silos have resulted in the occasional silo explosion. These can be quite violent and dangerous because coal dust adds to the strength of the blast. However, with the appropriate precautionary measures, methane accumulations in silos can be greatly reduced. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations at 30 CFR2 77.201 require that the methane content in the air of any coal silo be maintained below 1.0 vol %.3 Also, MSHA requires that methane tests be conducted before any electrical equipment is energized, unless a continuous monitor capable of deenergizing the electrical equipment is used.4 Measuring the gas emission from the coal. The first necessary step in dealing with silo methane issues is to measure the gas emission from the coal going into the silo. Such measure-ments allow one to estimate the silo ventilation needs and permit a comparison with the methane controls used at other mines that have similar gas levels. The gassiness of the coal can be measured by taking conveyor belt grab samples.5 Matta et al. [1978] measured the gas emission from conveyor belt grab samples using a simple desorption test. To conduct the test, they collected several grab samples of coal, weighing a few pounds each, from the conveyor belt entering the silo.6 They then sealed the coal into an airtight sample container that was equipped with a valve and short hose along with a pressure gauge. Every few hours they opened the valve and bled the emitted gas into a water-filled graduated cylinder that had been inverted and placed in a pan of water (Figure 11–1). The results are shown in Figure 11–2.

During an underground mine fire, the importance of controlling the spread of smoke and toxic gases with suitable ventilation structures has been proven. However, under certain conditions, control of the propagation of the fire itself may be even more critical in insuring a safe mine evacuation. Fire doors offer the means for accomplishing both objectives. In 1978, the Bureau of Mines initiated research to evaluate the state of fire-door technology and develop and test a fire door suitable for large openings (10 by 12 ft or larger) in noncoal underground mines. This report discusses current fire-door technology in the context of the underground mine environment and the design, fabrication, lab testing, and in-mine field testing of a mineworthy fire door. This door has a 1.5-h fire resistance rating and limits temperature rise across the door to 2500 F during the first 30 min of fire exposure.

Pilots of the MH-60S helicopter are exposed to continuous whole body vibration (WBV). Pilot fatigue is a growing operational concern due to the increased frequency of extended durations of missions (6-8+hours) in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Endurance aspects of the currently used rotary wing seating systems were not optimized for the longer missions and wide range of pilot anthropometric measurements, which is now typical of naval aviation. The current seating systems were designed primarily to meet crashworthiness requirements, not for the wide range of pilot anthropometry or to mitigate WBV. Albeit, an issue, pilot fatigue and reduced mission effectiveness are also critical concerns. Current Hazard Reports indicated that pain in pilots’ legs and backs begin two to four hours into the flight and increase with time. Mission readiness also decreases with an increase in flight duration due to the constant distraction of pilots shifting in their seats while trying to get comfortable. Froom, et al [2] reported a dose-response relationship between the length of military helicopter flights and back discomfort. He also concluded that this pain is typically dull, over the lower back, and its prevalence and intensity are dependent on the total flight hours of exposure. Methods This study evaluated WBV produced in the pilot seating systems onboard the MH-60S. The purpose of the study was to test and compare the effectiveness of two different seat cushions, the current seat cushion versus an anti-vibration seat cushion. Both seat cushions were measured for acceleration levels averaged over five-minute intervals using a triaxial seat pad accelerometer. The recordings were completed for a 3-hour straight and level flight. A frequency analysis from 0-80 hertz (Hz) was conducted on all acceleration measurements to determine the dominant axis and frequency of the pilots’ vibration exposure. The results were then compared to the applicable Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) established by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) [1] and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 2631.1 [3] to determine the MH-60S pilots’ permissible exposure time for both seat cushions. Results The results of the study showed that for both seat cushions the vibration levels of the z-axis at 16 Hz had the shortest allowable exposure duration, according to the ACGIH TLVs. In the z-axis at 16 Hz, the MH-60S’s current seat cushion’s acceleration levels indicated an exposure time limit of approximately 6 hours, while the anti-vibration seat cushion’s acceleration levels pierced the 8-hour exposure time limit curve. This is shown in the graph below.

"INTRODUCTION During the summer of 1945 the Bureau of Mines made approximately 200 miles of reconnaissance magnetic surveys in north-central Mirnesota. The survey started near the western end of the Mesabi Iron Range and extended into the area to the southwest, west, and northwest and also southward to the-northern limits of the Cuyuna Iron Range. The purpose of the survey was to data to assist exploration for iron ore in the region through:1. Supplying a relatively unit form network of traverses, by which and future surveys of localities in the urea ray be correlated. Suggesting localities in which more detailed magnetic surveys may be justified, and, Disclosing localities in which there is lass hope of obtaining significant results from further magnetic surveys.The instrument used was a Hotchkiss Superdip, and traverses for calibration and comparison were run with a Schmidt-type magnetometer. Field observations and work directly related thereto were carried out under contract by E. J. Lang-year Co., Minneapolis. Engineers of the Bureau of Mines planned, directed, and reviewed the survey."

Suspended seats perform two functions: Reduce effect of occasional large bumps; Reduce more continuous vibration at a lower level. The former needs high damping. The latter needs low damping. For most mobile work machines the inevitable compromise is generally better than a simple cushion seat, because that amplifies vibration at around 4 Hz which is a sensitive frequency for human vertical WBV. Why have standard tests for seat suspensions? • Seat suspensions are non-linear so any measure of performance depends on operating conditions. For comparison these need to be defined. • Seat manufacturers need benchmarks for product development; • Machine makers choose dynamic characteristics appropriate to their products; • Occupational health specialists wish to control operator exposure to Standard tests should be representative, repeatable and reproducible. These requirements are reviewed in relation to the history of seat test standards and the current position. Current position and history The current position is that we have standard tests for seats for agricultural tractors, earthmoving machinery, industrial (fork-lift) trucks. These tests comprise measurement of vibration transmission and of the rate of damping. Current standards developed as the technology developed, starting around 1960: 1. Test on machine driven over standard surface1. 2. Test on shaker reproducing standard surface. 3. Shaker input replaced by representative spectrum2. 4. Human subject replaced by dynamic dummy. (Not yet settled). Are standard tests representative? The development process has gradually moved seat tests further from reality. 4 hr samples of work exposure suggest that seats do not on average provide large reductions of vertical WBV3. For specific magnitudes of vibration they can work well. For low vibration, performance is reduced by friction and for severe vibration by length of travel. Recent work has led to a new test to quantify how a suspension controls over-travel 9.

The Bureau of Mines tested a prototype tapered-element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) dust monitor for measuring respirable coal mine dust. The monitor uses the inertial behavior of a vibrating element to measure the mass of sampled dust. Tests were performed to determine variability, drift, the effect of humidity, placement of collection filter, and element orientation during analysis, and comparability with gravimetric measurements of respirable coal dust. Variability was about 1.6 µg. Over about 26 h at 46 pct relative humidity, drift was very slightly negative. When the relative humidity was increased to 78 pct, all units showed a total positive change less then 40 µg over about 70h. Filter placement variation on the tapered element resulting from in- consistent sizing of the filter mounting bases caused significant error (up to 0.2 mg). In practice, calibration of the system for each new filter will eliminate that error. Orientation of the element during analysis did not introduce significant error, but care is necessary when mounting the canister that houses the element to avoid damping oscillation of the element. Dust tests were performed in an aerosol chamber using coal dust. Measurements made by the TEOM dust monitor agreed to within 10 pct of simultaneous measurements by gravimetric personal samplers.

"Fracture mechanics plays an important role in studies of geologic materials such as rock and coal. Yet fracture data are scarce for rock and most limited or unreliable for coal. A testing system was developed which can apply mixed mode loads to a crack tip in many rocks and geologic materials. It is possible to subject the test specimen to pure mode I, various mixed modes and a nearly pure mode II fracture load. The system is currently used to study the mechanics of fine fragment formation in various coals. Experimental measurements include KI and KII' fracture velocity and acoustic emission.INTRODUCTIONA major research program at The Pennsylvania State University is directed to understanding the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation in various coals. The program represents an effort to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (black lung) in coal miners. The principal source of the respirable coal fragments is the cutting operation which forms and liberates the particles by a fracture process. Present understanding of the mechanics of the events which form and liberate these particles is meager (Cook, 1982).Current knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms of coal dust generation and entrainment in terms of the underlying fracture mechanics is critically needed to improve and possibly control the processes involved. Whether the cutting operation is done with a 'continuous miner' cutting machine, a plow or a longwall shearer, it is fundamentally a problem of mixed-mode crack propagation. When a cutting tool interacts with coal, it causes numerous cracks to propagate through the intact material. Numerous larger fragments are broken free, but another quantity of undesirable fine fragments is also created. The formation of these respirable fragments may be a direct result of the crack propagation process; hence, a thorough understanding of the fracture mechanics of coal is required to minimize production of the unwanted fine fragments.In most rock engineering applications, the rock material properties are of secondary importance to the rock mass properties; however, for rock fragmentation and rock cutting problems, it is rock material properties such as fracture toughness which are of prime interest (Bieniawski, 1980). Several rock cutting and rock failure theories have been proposed, but it is only very recently that fracture mechanics concepts have been successfully applied to the study of rock cutting mechanics. All cutting models seek to predict the cutting forces and the cutter geometry necessary to cause rock breakage and chip formation given some fundamental mechanical properties ~f the rock. Such models have wide applications in drilling, tunnel boring and mining problems. Nelson et al., (1985, 1986) has provided a very useful correlation between the laboratory measured fracture mechanics properties of rock and the performance of the disk cutters on tunnel boring machines."

In the interest of safety in mining, the Bureau of Mines recommends: 1. That cages or skips used for hoisting or lowering men in vertical and steeply inclined shafts shall be provided with safety catches designed to prevent falling of the cage or skip if the hoisting rope or other connections break; and 2. That cars used. for hoisting or lowering men with ropes in slopes shall be provided with arresting devices, other than ordinary brakes, that come into action if the hoisting rope or other connections break. In presenting this decision, it is recognized that the principal requirements for safety in hoisting operations are the use of hoisting ropes of ample size and strength to provide a factor of safety recognized as adequate by the best en engineering practice; their proper care, protection against undue wear and corrosion, and frequent inspection; and immediate removal of ropes from service when inspection or tests cast doubt upon their further safe serviceability.

The coal-bearing areas of Kansas cover approximately 18,800 square miles (23 percent of the state's total area). Coal in Kansas ranges from lignite to high volatile bituminous, located principally in the south-eastern part of the state. Kansas reserves are estimated to be 987,500,000 tons, approximately 0.2 percent of U.S. reserves. Coal beds generally occur in thin seams up to five feet thick. The overburden-to-coal stripping ratios in Kansas are among the highest in the nation, typically 20 to 1, with some ratios up to 35 to 1. The first commercial coal mining operation in Kansas opened in 1865 at Fort Scott in Bourbon County. As in other states, coal production in Kansas increased during the industrial revolution, and then fell as industry converted to alternative fuels. Production peaked in 1916 and 1917, with annual production of 7,250,000 tons. Coal production today is by surface mining methods. The Kansas regulatory program was approved April 14, 1982; the Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 1, 1982; and the emergency program authority was approved January 10,1989.

It is apparent that coal will play an increasingly important role in satisfying the nation's energy requirements for the remainder of this century. Both deep mining and surface mining will be practiced to develop known U.S. coal reserves, but until significant improvements in the productivity of deep mining emerge, surface mining is likely to be predominant. This report addresses the problems of coal extraction and surface mine reclamation in the 11-state Midwestern coal resource region, where surface stripping of high-sulfur, bituminous coal has been a well-developed industry for most of this century. Midwestern coal markets have declined in recent years. In part this is a result of widespread conversions to more convenient and (apparently) economical liquid and gaseous fuels, but the decline in Midwestern coal use is also attributable to the impact of current air pollution control regulations that prohibit emissions of sulfur oxides and particulate matter. A part of the regional demand for Midwestern coal has been transferred to the Northern Great Plains where extensive low-sulfur coal reserves are currently being developed.

Landstrom et al. (1985) suggested the possibility of cortical activation during exposure to WBV, however, it is not known how cerebral physiology (oxygenation and blood volume) responds in healthy women during different vibration frequencies. This study examined the role of backrest support and handgrip work on cerebral oxygenation and blood volume responses, during exposure to seated WBV. Methods Fourteen women (age: 23.9 ± 3.5 years) were randomly exposed to three frequencies of WBV (3, 4.5 and 6 Hz at approximately 0.9gr.m.s in the vertical direction) on a customized vibrating base (Advanced Therapy Products, Inc., USA) in a seated posture on three separate days. On the first day, the subjects completed an aerobic fitness test until volitional exhaustion on an arm cranking ergometer (Cybex, MET 300, USA). Each WBV session lasted 30 min (6 min baseline without WBV, 8 min WBV ‘with’ or ‘without’ backrest support, and 4 min recovery from WBV, 8 min WBV with ‘opposite’ backrest condition, and 4 min recovery following WBV). During 8 min WBV exposure ‘with’ and ‘without’ backrest support, subjects performed maximal voluntary rhythmic handgrip contractions with their right hand for 1 min using a dynamometer. To obtain regional oxygenation and blood volume responses, a NIRS sensor (MicroRunman, NIM, Inc., PA, USA) was placed on the anterior right frontal lobe just below the hair and close to fronto-temporalis region (Maikala et al. 2005). Results Baseline oxygenation and blood volume values were recorded during recovery from each WBV session of ‘with’ and ‘without’ backrest support. The physiological change in oxygenation and blood volume during each frequency (3, 4.5, and 6 Hz) for both backrest (‘with’ and ‘without’ a backrest) and workload (WBV only and WBV combined with rhythmic handgrip contractions) was calculated as the difference between the maximum values identified for each WBV condition of backrest and workload and baseline values (Maikala et al. 2005). Three-way analysis of covariance with repeated measures (frequency, backrest, and workload) with a fully crossed design was used to evaluate the differences in the oxygenation and blood volume responses (measured in optical density [od] units). In 1930 , 65,448 long tons of virgin or primary tin were consumed by 1,292 establishments in the United States , representing about 91 per cent of the total consumption as computed from imports , exports , and stocks at the beginning and the end of the year . The reported consumption was equivalent to 38 per cent of the world's tin production in 1930 , estimated at 171,000 tons , and was 12 per cent less than the 74,369 tons consumed by 1,307 establishments in 1928 . Decreased consumption of new tin in 1930 ás compared to 1928 was a reflection of the general industrial depression . All of the tin- consuming industries showed substantial decreases except tin plate and terneplate , white metal , and tinning , which showed small tonnage increases aggregating only 1,200 tons . The largest tonnage decrease was in the use of new tin in babbitt which declined 33 per cent in 1930 as compared to 1928. This was largely attributable to the decreased production of automobiles and trucks , which was 24 per cent lower in 1930 than in 1928. Percentage decreases in other important tin- consuming industries were as follows : Solder 18 per cent , bronze 19 per cent , tin foil 40 per cent , chemicals 23 per cent , tin oxide 44 per cent , and type metal 46 per cent . The distribution of the amount consumed by various uses during 1927 , 1928 , and 1930 is shown in table 1 . Consumption studies indicate the fact that variation in tin consumption from year to year parallels the fluctuations in demand for the already wellestablished tin products . For example , the manufacture of motor cars and trucks3 required only 11,000 tons of tin in 1930 compared to 19,000 tons in 1928 ; the canning industry continues to require the greater portion of the tin plate and much of the solder . Recently developed industries , while affecting total consumption of bearing metals , solders , etc. , to some extent , have made little change in the relative importance of these commodities as consumers of tin .

Isometric strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with a voluntary isometric (muscle[s] maintain[s] a constant length) contraction. The key thing to understand about this type of contraction and strength measurement is that no body movement occurs during the measurement period. The tested person's body angles and posture remain the same throughout the test. Isometric strength has historically been the type most studied and measured. It is probably the easiest to measure and to understand. Some strength researchers feel that isometric strength data may be difficult to apply to some "real life" situations because in most real circumstances people are moving - they are not static. Other researchers counter that it is equally difficult to determine the speed of movement of a person or group of persons doing a job (each moves in his or her unique manner and speed across the links and joints of the body). Thus, dynamic strength test data collected on persons moving at a different speed and/or in a different posture from the "real world" condition will be just as hard to apply. In truth, neither is better - they are different measurements. Both researchers and users should collect and use data that they understand and that fits their application. Workplace Assessment When a worker is called on to perform a physically demanding lifting task, the external load produces moments - tendencies to produce motion, also called torques - about various joints of the body.(1) Often these moments are augmented by the force of gravity acting on the mass of various body segments. For example, in a biceps curl exercise, the moment produced by the forearm flexors must counteract the moment of the weight held in the hands as well as the moment caused by gravity acting on the forearm's center of mass. To perform the task successfully, the muscles responsible for moving the joint must develop a greater moment than the combined moments of the external load and body segment. It should be clear that, at each joint of the body, there is a limit to the strength that the muscle can produce to move ever-increasing external loads. This concept forms the basis of isometric muscle strength prediction modeling.(1) The following procedures are generally used with this biomechanical analysis technique. First, workers are observed (and usually photographed or video-taped) as they perform physically demanding tasks. For each task the posture of the torso and the extremities are documented at the time of peak exertion. The postures are then re-created using a computerized software package, which calculates the load moments produced at various joints of the body as the task is performed. The values obtained during this analysis are then compared to population norms for isometric strength obtained from a population of industrial workers. Late in 1974 at a meeting with the Cedar Coal Company in Chelyan, West Virginia, a very definite requirement for an automatic heat sensing fire suppression system for the type coal augers used in their mine was revealed. Several fires had been experienced, and while equipment loss was a consideration, operator safety was also a concern. As of that date no one had developed an automatic system specifically for fire suppression on coal augers. II. EQUIPMENT DEVELOPMENT As a result of the above meeting, an unsolicited proposal was made to the Bureau on March 1, 1975, and a contract was issued to provide the following services: A. Determine and define fire hazard problem on Compton Coal Auger. B. Modify or otherwise mike a Lease "AFEX" system suitable for protecting the fire hazard area developed in paragraph "A". C. Make installation of "AFEX" system. D. Monitor installation for reliability for a period of 90 days after installation. C. ConJurt a simulated fire test to determine effectiveness on system.

Construction workers may be exposed to hazardous dust containing silica when working in enclosed cabs during construction activities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that equipment operator exposure could be reduced by retrofitting air pressurization and filtration systems on existing cabs, using sweeping compounds on soiled floors, and implementing a dust control program.

In characterizing tars obtained by the low-temperature carbonization of North Dakota lignite, infrared spectra have been an invaluable aid in both qualitative and quantitative examination. Quite, early in the tar-research program of the Federal Bureau of Mines it became evident that the small number of published spectra available for hydroxy-aromatics would be inadequate for comparative purposes when dealing with the wide range of compounds present in coal tar; therefore, compiling a catalog of spectra was begun as a continuing part of the tar program. Because these spectra should be valuable to other investigators in this and related fields, they are being presented in these reports. This supplement to the original publications presents the spectra (figs, I to 32), representing 32 compounds, largely phenolic materials. The major problem of this project has been the availability of materials for examination. Most of the compounds included in this supplement were synthesized at the Bureau of Mines Lignite Research Laboratory. Some were obtained from commercial sources, whereas the compound 2'-hydroxy-l-phenylnaphthalene was synthesized at the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Bruceton, Pa. The spectrum of 2-ethyl-4-methylphenol, figure 32, is a correction of the spectrum presented as figure 26 in the original reports

"The electrolytic manganese process developed by the Bureau of Mines4/ and now in use in the commercial plant of the Electromanganese Corp. at Knoxville, Tenn., and in the Bureau of Mines pilot plant5/ at Boulder City, Nev., involves the electrolysis of a solution of manganese sulfate and ammonium sulfate in a diaphragm-type cell. Metallic manganese is deposited on the cathodes, and sulfuric acid is produced at the anodes.. The spent electrolyte contains, in addition to the sulfuric acid, approximately 30 percent of the manganese and most of the ammonium sulfate originally present in the feed solution. This spent solution is used to leach fresh ore that has previously been given a reducing roast. The resulting leach liquor is purified and returned to the cell.Since the presence of small amounts of certain impurities in the electrolyte may be very detrimental to the electrodeposition of manganese, the purification of feed solution is a very important step in the process. According to the purification method6/ now in use in the Bureau of Mines pilot plant at Boulder city, Nev., cobalt, nickel, iron, arsenic, lead, copper, etc., are removed by precipitation as sulfides at a pH of 6.0 to 6.5. Residual sulfides and colloidal material are removed from the resulting solution by ferric hydroxide formed by adding a small amount of iron sulfate and passing air through the solution. Feed solution purified in this way contains less than 1/2 mg.-per liter-of such impurities as arsenic, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, etc., and is pure enough to give consistently excellent manganese deposits.Although this purification scheme has given satisfactory results at the Boulder City pilot plant knowledge of the specific effects of various impurities would be valuable. Such information would be useful in diagnosing the causes of cell room operating difficulties, and might aid in the recognition and correction of impurity difficulties arising from the use of new ores.. The purpose of this investigation was therefore, to study the effects of various concentrations of some common impurities.Since the effects of some impurities may not be apparent during short deposition periods and since harmful impurities often cause erratic results rather than consistently poor ones, it was believed that conclusions concerning the effects of impurities should be based upon the results of a fairly large number of 20- to 24-hour tests. Because of the time required for such tests, it was necessary to limit the scope of the work to a few of the more common impurities."

Twelve properties in the Riverside Mountains have moderate to high potential, for silver, gold, copper, and molybdenum. Six properties in the Big Maria Mountains have moderate potential for zinc, lead, copper, silver, iron ore, and limestone. The Big Maria Mountains also have occurrences of building stone. Four properties in or near the study area have low-grade gold-silver-copper resources totalling more than 300 thousand tons (270,000 t). An estimated 29 million tons (26 million t) of limestone and dolomite, and 620,000 long tons (630,000 t) of iron ore are in the Big Maria Mountains section of the study area. INTRODUCTION The Big Maria Mountains Wilderness Study Area covers about 50,538 acres (20,453 ha) near the Colorado River in eastern Riverside County, California (fig. 1). The study includes portions of both the Big Maria and Riverside Mountains. It lies north of Blythe, California and south of California Highway 62 in the Mojave Desert province of the California Desert Conservation Area. The study area consists of two mountain ranges surrounded mostly by broad alluvial slopes or bajadas. It extends for 25 mi (40 km) from the Riverside Mountains on the north, to the south end of the elongate Big Maria Mountains.

The Bureau of Mines developed a process using ion exchange to recover cobalt from spent copper leach solutions. A preliminary economic evaluation of the process indicated that about one-third of the capital cost was attributed to the total resin inventory, and one-third of the operating cost was required for reagents to remove iron from the ion-exchange eluates. An agitated Pachuca elution system was investigated in place of a fixed-bed elution system. The Pachuca system reduced the resin inventory by 27 pet when compared with the fixed-bed elution system. Processing fresh spent copper leach solution reduced the resin inventory by 20 pct and resin iron loading by 80 pct. Reagent requirements for removing iron from the eluates were decreased because less iron was extracted. The Pachuca system, along with processing fresh spent copper leach solution, reduced the total resin inventory by 47 pct. A revised cost evaluation of the cobalt recovery process was obtained to determine the effects of these process modifIcations. The estimated total capital cost for a plant processing 10,000 gpm of spent copper leach solution containing 26 ppm Co was $23.1 million. With credits for nickel, zinc, and copper byproducts, the estimated net operating cost was $5.10/lb of cobalt.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been investigating new techniques to improve the of mineral to recover water lost in the waste slurry, and to produce dewatered solid dewatering s suitable for disposal. As part of this investigation, a study was undertaken to investigate the feasibility of dewatering Alaska placer effluent. Based on the laboratory tests, preliminary field tests were conducted on three placer mines in Alaska. At these mines, the water recovered from the placer effluent (250 to 23,000 NTU) exhibited turbidities of 20 to 240 NTU. In the second year of the project, a large-scale dewatering unit was set up at a mine located in the Livengood district. The feed, at flow rates up to 935 gpm, was mixed with dilute PEO solution in a flexible plastic hose with and without static mixers. Feed to the dewatering unit generally ranged between 300 and 26,500 NTU and required PEO dosages of 0.02 to 0.14 lb per 1,000 gal to produce water from the screen underflow with turbidities of 20 to 50 NTU. During this period, a small unit was also operated at Dow rams of 10 to 25 gpm at sewn sites throughout Alaska, with the effluent from four of the sites being dewatered successfully.
