"INTRODUCTIONThe mechanistic details of the biological events leading to coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) are not yet fully understood, despite several decades of extensive epidemiologic1.2 and laboratory studies.2-6 Epidemiologic studies1.2 have shown, for example, that the incidence and severity of CWP differ markedly in the different regions and mines at comparable exposures, but laboratory investigations2-6 have demonstrated only partial correlation of the epidemiologic data with the differences in the mineral composition and the rank of coal mined. In particular, while epidemiologic data indicate1.2 direct correlation of the· prevalence and severity of CWP with the rank (i.e., % carbon content) of coal, this correlation has not been established by laboratory4'6 and animal exposure3 studies. In order to explain these results, in 1980 Artemov and Reznik' suggested that perhaps they arise from the fundamental differences in the surface properties of the coal. dusts inhaled by the coal miners and those used in the laboratory studies: while the miners inhale freshly fractured coal particles, henceforth called the 'fresh' coal dust, the laboratory studies generally utilize 'aged' coal dusts (i.e., dusts that have been stored for many days or even longer). Reznik and Artemov' used electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to show that the mechanical crushing of some Soviet Union coals generated organic free radicals and that the concentration and the decay times (hence the reactivity) of these radicals were higher for the coals of higher ranks. Since some of the radicals decayed within a few minutes in air, the authors surmised that while these radical species could lead to certain specific pathogenic reactions at the sites of mining operations, this might not be the case in the laboratory studies, due to the conventional use of 'stored' dusts which would be expected to contain significantly smaller free radical concentrations. This is consistent with the recent findings that, standardized, aged coal dusts exhibit minimal cytotoxicity. 8While the above mentioned work of Artemov and Reznik7 did suggest a possible new clue to the pathogenesis of CWP (i.e., the role of the coal based free radical species), no direct biological/cytotoxicity data were provided to show that 'fresh' coal dusts were, indeed, more pathogenic than the 'stale' ones. Because of the rather significant implications of the Artcmov-Reznik hypothesis to the understanding of 1hc biochemical mechanism and, hence, the strategies for the eventual containment of CWP, we have initiated a comparative study of the free radical formation and cytotoxicity properties of freshly crushed coal ·particles. As done by Artemov and Reznik, 7 we have used the ESR technique as the direct method of measuring the concentration and decay kinetics of the coal based free radicals. Our preliminary ESR studies on two Pennsylvania coals, a bituminous (carbon content 72 % ) and an anthracite (95 % carbon) coal, have confirmed the Artemov-Reznik finding that the crushing-induced free radical sites are higher on the coals with higher carbon content (i.e., higher rank).9-11 In the present work we describe our more recent results of a parallel study of the time dependence of the decrease in the free radical content of a freshly made anthracite dust (as measured via ESR) and that of the dust's cytotoxicity potential as measured by the extent of hemolysis of (sheep) erythrocytes. We have also investigated the effects of free radical scavengers on the cytotoxicity potential of the dust and deduce that indeed the free radicals could play a significant role in the initial events in the mechanism of the cytotoxic effects due to the inhalation of coal dust inhalation."

"Prewar Conditions:Metallic magnesium may be considered a war metal, but a war metal with a future, so far as the industry in the United States is concerned. Its production in the United States prior to 1915, on a commercial scale, was negligible, but imports prior to that year may be taken as a gaze of the demand for the metal. Unfortunately, magnesium was not listed separately by the Department of Commerce prior to the war, among the importations, but was included with other metals, as follows: ""Barium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium, and alloys of which said metals are the component materials of chief value."" However, the imports of metals enumerated other than magnesium were probably small, so that the importations under the above caption may be considered chiefly metallic magnesium in one form or another and, therefore, is an approximate gage of the demand for the metal in the United States. These imports were as follows:These figures are so close that they give a good idea of the figures for the respective calendar years.Of this prewar use, it has been estimated that about 85 per cent was used annually and in approximately equal quantities in the production of (1) flash-light powder, (2) fire works, (3) aluminum casting work, and (4) nickel and nickel-copper alleys, such as monel metal, etc. The re¬maining 15 per cent was employed for general uses, such as deoxiding brass and other copper alloys in foundry work, and to a small extent in laboratory and research work."

Fire is still a scourge of the mining industry, although many precautionary measures have been and are being taken to reduce the incidence of fires and to combat them. Generally, the success of fire extinguishment is directly proportional to the speed of attack, and the speed of attack in turn is dependent upon the availability of materials and trained personnel. Preparations for firefighting are frequently neglected because they are considered emergency needs and do not contribute directly to coal production. Fire incites panic--a fact often overlooked--but such chaos can be minimized by training people in the use of equipment and procedures. Heat, smoke, and fumes hamper the approach to a fire; however, a relatively new technique of attacking fires with high-expansion foam may well contribute greatly to firefighting. The foam is transported to a fire and used at a considerable distance, thus permitting the firefighters to work more safely.

Mineral nodules from the ocean floor represent a vast potential source of manganese, nickel, cobalt, and copper. Process development studies to devise methods for recovering these metals were conducted by the Bureau of Mines using two types of nodules--relatively low-grade calcareous nodules from the Atlantic Ocean and higher grade siliceous nodules from the Pacific Ocean. Ammoniacal carbonate leaching of reduced nodules appeared to have the best potential for processing the calcareous nodules, but the method proved to be impractical for recovering manganese. Extraction of 90 percent or better of the nickel, cobalt, and copper showed the technique to be attractive for recovery of these metals. The siliceous nodules appeared amenable to a process that starts with either a sulfur dioxide leach or a sulfation roast followed by a water leach to dissolve the soluble sulfates.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 310 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 16 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1978 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis appara¬tus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862/ and 576.3/ The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. Twenty previous publications have presented the results of 11,573 gas analyses made prior to 197R. The first three, Bulletins 486,4/ 576,5/ and 617,6/ contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960. The other 17

In 1984 and 1985 the U.S. Bureau of Mines performed a mineral survey of the South Jackson Mountains Wilderness Study Area covering 60,211 acres of mountainous terrain of Humboldt County in northwestern Nevada. Approximately 550 lode claims have been located within or adjacent to the study area from 1900 to the present. Total recorded production for the area is 28.19 ounces gold, 1,105 ounces silver, 959 pounds copper, 6,016 pounds lead, and 12,446 pounds zinc; an additional two carloads from one mine contained an unknown amount of metal. In early 1986, there were eight active properties with a total of 126 claims. Wescord Resources and Long Lac Exploration (Texas) Inc. are involved in a joint exploration of the Jackson Mountains for volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Development at the Claudia mine continues in 1986. Results of the survey indicate that there are no identified mineral resources or reserves within or adjacent to the study area. Twenty-two properties have mineral occurrences containing gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, iron, antimony, vanadium, and cobalt, with silver, copper, and iron being the most abundant.

This study has appraised available deeper soil loosening equipment in the 1-4 ft. depth range, in the U.S. and abroad which has potential for Illinois prime farm-land reclamation. The appraisal was based on written and/or oral contacts with equipment manufacturers, reclamation experts, and visiting with selected equipment manufacturers. The results indicate that several manufacturers in the U.S., West Germany, and England market static and vibratory deeper soil loosening equipment which may have potential for application in Illinois. The pertinent information concerning each equipment with potential is presented in this report.

This report provides concepts for two automated longwall mining systems; one for operation in a 42 to 57-inch thick section of the Lower Kittanning coal seam, the other in a 57 to 72-inch thick section of the Pittsburgh seam. The Lower Kittanning concept uses a single-drum bidirectional shearer and 500-ton capacity 4-leg chocks and the Pittsburgh concept uses a double-drum shearer with 500-ton shields. Each concept is designed to produce in excess of 2,500 tons of clean coal per shift with a 6-man face crew. The automated longwalls consist of off-the-shelf control system hardware attached to standard longwall equipment. Control hardware includes a control and display console; prime and backup mini-computers; multiplex data transmission, power, and control lines; several remote terminals which serve as interface junctions; and various sensors and actuators located on the longwall equipment. The system can be operated either fully automatically, remotely or manually.

The manganiferous schists occurring in the vicinity of Kings Mountain, North and South Carolina, suggest significant tonnages of potential submarginal ores. Although some reconnaissance work in connection with these deposits has been reported, no recent information has been published. Evaluation of the schists as a possible domestic manganese resource has not always adequately considered the fact that the manganese content occurs quantitatively both as oxide and as the silicate, spessartite. The Bureau of Mines investigation herein reported includes preliminary studies to indicate the extent of manganese oxide mineralization and to deter-mine the amenability of the material to sulfur dioxide leaching. The field reconnaissance studies suggest a resource containing in one area an average of 6.4 percent manganese as oxide. The procurement of depth information was beyond the scope of the investigation.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program again forged ahead during 1952, and important technical advances led the way to improved methods of converting coal and oil shale into liquid fuels. Marking the eighth year of activities under this program, the past 12 months brought a new domestic industry nearer realization.The increasing demand for gasoline and oil and the rising cost of finding new petroleum, coupled with America's growing dependence on imports and the unsettled international situation, have continued emphasize the importance of the Bureau's Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program. Oil, the indispensable material of wartime, likewise has critical importance in peacetime, touching as it does the life of every individual. Supplementing petroleum with synthetic liquid fuels will not only conserve this Nation's petroleum reserves but also will bring into greater use its tremendous reserves of coal, as well as the vast deposits of oil shale for which no other practical use has yet been found.The Bureau of Mines Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program is one of the most important and far-reaching of the Government's research projects. Through development, of commercial synthetic liquid fuels, the United States can obtain oil products from its great inland reserves of coal and oil shale to supplement petroleum in any quantity that may be necessary, consistent with economic and other requirements, such as national defense. The use of raw materials from such deposits would be of highest importance in wartime, when shipping lanes are menaced by the enemy. The Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program of the Bureau of Mines and research efforts of industry have advanced American technology to the point where it is now possible to begin the design and construction of prototype plants. Certainly, significant improvements will be made as the program continues, but this prospect in no way alters the fact that the start of prototype plants should be encouraged. These plants, as the first step in the development of a synthetic fuels industry, would serve a threefold purpose:"

"This investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Mines as part of a program of the Solid Fuels Administration to encourage the utilization of anthracite fines, the objective being to determine the practicability of using anthracite fines in the manufacture of packagedThe experimental loss of packaged fuel covered by this report were made at a commercial plant using the Glenn Smith process and ordinarily making packaged fuel from Pocahontas screenings. These lots included several made from straight antimacite mines and others made from various blends of anthracite fines with four different bituminous coals. In all cases an asphalt binder was used. Determinations of the physical properties and the cobustion characteristics o the various samples of packaged fuel were made by the. Bureau of Mines at the Central Experiment Station.The physical tests indicated that a packaged fuel of sufficient strength for ordinary handling can be made from straight anthracite coal or from a wide variety of blends of anthracite fixes with bitunimous coal, using asphaltic binder. However the combustion tests indicated that packaged fuel made from anthracite alone tended to crumble excessively during burning and that as much as 30 to 50 percent of a caking coal may be required In the mixture to produce a block having satisfactory combustion characteristics.The authors wish to acknowledge the. splendid cooperation of Messrs. This report identifies all the possible activities, variables and factors that contribute to the surface subsidence process over room and pillar workings. These factors are responsible for mine instability and collapse that ultimately transforms into surface subsidence. Such a failure mechanism is initiated by the failure of the mine floor bed and or the failure of the pillars or the failure of the roof after second mining, which eventually brings down the roof. The individual responses of the pillar, floor and roof rocks to the mining induced stresses and the complex interaction between these components can't be attributable to any single factor. Also, no attempt has been made to quantify the significance of each of these factors and relate to the ground subsidence due to the lack of field data. The discussion here is centered primarily on the first mining though second mining is mentioned very briefly,

Coal mine bumps involve the violent, rapid failure of coal and rock around a mine excavation. Deep coal mines with strong roof and floor rocks and high-stress conditions frequently experience face and rib bumps. The bump problem is becoming more severe as mining depth increases, prompting efforts to control high stress in advance of mining. This Bureau of Mines report presents a review of the most widely used methods to detect and destress high-stress zones along coal faces and an investigation of stress-related bump problems and destressing techniques at a cooperating mine. Geotechnical instrumentation and microseismic methods were used to better understand bump occurrences in underground coal mines. Laboratory tests of the drilling-yield method for high-stress detection were conducted to determine the correlation between the volume of cuttings obtained and the magnitude of the applied stress at various confining pressures. A three-dimensional, multiple-seam computer modeling program, MULSIM, was used to evaluate the effectiveness of stress-relief methods. Modeling results indicate that dangerously high-stress areas can be controlled by either proper planning or destressing. Proper mine planning guidelines and destressing methods such as volley firing, hydraulic fracturing, and auger drilling are discussed.

The purpose of this research was to develop a computer simulator fur predicting the air quality in existing coal mines as well as a design aid for developing new mines. In addition to the air quantity flow, the other variables of tempera Lure, moisture, methane and respirable dust are necessary to determine the air quality. An additional feature of this simulator is that it allows parametric studies of these variables to explore the effect that these variables have on the air quality of an operating mine system. The research has also pointed out arias where more research is needed, and promote better and more systematic data taking techniques. Wang and Hartman (see Reference 9, on page 1-98 of Section 1) had already published a computer program to determine the ventilation of large mines, and Wang and Saperstein (see Reference 10 on page 1-98 of Section 1) later published a refinement of the work in the previous reference. These references were the starting point of the simulator developed by this present research effort, and Section 1 of this report is a slightly modified version of the original vent elation program. Results of studies of reservoir and wax-precipitation temperatures relating to wax deposition in the reservoir of the Bradford oil field are presented in this report. During 1949 and 1950 Bureau of Mines engineers made temperature measurements in 42 wells, which indicate that the Bradford Third-sand temperatures range from 59.7° F., at 1,150 feet, to 71.9° F., at 2,040 feet. Reservoir temperatures measured at the same depths in newly drilled wells and oil-producing wells differed as much as 4.5u F. Injection-well temperatures measured during water injection showed that the temperature of the water entering the sand was 11.5° F. lower than reservoir temperatures before injection. The cooling in the formation resulting froth the injection of low-temperature water was 11.5° F. in the vicinity of the injection-well bore, and a maximum of 2.1° F. 200 feet from the injection well. Sand temperature, after 5 months of water injection, was reduced 1.5° F. 90 feet from water-injection wells. The temperature at which wax begins to precipitate from solution in crude oil was determined at atmospheric pressure for 26 samples and ranged from 51° to 67° F. Oil samples from wells producing no water had wax-precipitation temperatures ranging from 51° to 58° F. and wax contents from 2.20 to 2.97 weight percent, whereas the samples from wells producing water and oil had wax precipitation temperatures ranging from 580 to 67° F. and wax contents from 2.57 to 3.42 weight percent .

An alinement (steering) sensor for continuous mining machines has been developed under a Bureau of Mines contract. A laser source in the entry projects a beam parallel to the centerline of the entry. The beam is optically shaped to a narrow, vertical fan and illuminates an array of optical sensors bunted on the mini machine. These sensors interpret the location of the beam into meter readings of heading (angle) error and lateral displacement errors. The system, which was tested for 5 months in an operating mine, appears to be fundamentally sound, and with some modification, should be applicable to remote or automatic guidance of continuous miners and other machines.

A methodology has been developed for qualitative safety hazard evaluation and quantitative reliability analysis of mine monitoring and control systems. Detailed application of these techniques were made to two commercial monitor/control systems and to a West Virginia University distributed microprocessor-based system. A controlled environmental test was conducted on a set of one of the commercial system's outstations. A software reliability evaluation methodology was also developed and applied.

This paper discusses various mechanical improvements that have been gradually incorporated in the copper-willing plants of the Southwest daring the past 14 years, power plants for concentrators, use of large-size units of equipment, and the effect of plant capacities on costs. The improvements in mechanical equipment and plant design have contributed in the reduction of operating costs; in some instances a saving in the capital cost per ton of daily capacity milled has resulted.

A series of controlled experiments was conducted at four surface coal mines to study the effects of certain blast parameters upon the ground and air vibration. Preliminary scale-model blasts were conducted at a quarry to provide basic data. It was found that the amplitudes of the ground and air vibration were controlled by the maximum explosive weight per delay. Either cube root or square root scaling could be used for the seismic amplitudes, and cube root scaling could be used for the overpressure amplitudes. Both amplitudes were not significantly affected by the total charge weight per blast, the attitude of the boreholes, or the charge length or diameter. The overpressure amplitudes were affected by the charge depth, the use of cover over surface detonating cord, and the use of adequate stemming. The length of the delay intervals and the spacing of holes were important in determining the potential for reinforcement of the amplitudes in certain directions from the blasts. In downwind directions from the blast, the attenuation of the overpressure with distance decreases. Surface terrain t did not significantly affect the overpressure amplitudes within the range investigated. The type of overburden affects the generation of both amplitudes and the propagation of the seismic amplitudes. Spectral analysis of the ground and air vibration is reported. A bibliography of pertinent literature is included as an appendix. A scaled distance of 300 ft/lb1/3 should produce a peak particle velocity of less than 1 ips and an overpressure of less than 128 dB linear peak. For square root scaling, a scaled distance of 75 ft/lbl/2 should limit the ground vibration to less than 1 ips.
