While direct study of high temperature hydrothermal activity and the associated mineral formation as well as study of their scales are possible in the modern ocean, researchers are deprived of such opportunity for past geologic time. Even in cases where hydrothermal deposits that formed in the geological past are preserved they have been covered by sediments or overlain by lava and have become inaccessible after a time for obser-vation and sampling. Rarely are these buried hydrothermal deposits found during deep-sea drilling or coring operations, and their direct study on an ocean scale is impossible at present. Even within hydrothermal fields, without special preliminary detailed surveys, the probability of intersecting hydrothermal edifices that are covered by sediments becomes a rare event.

We report preliminary results for a group of unique samples collected with MBARI’s ROV Tiburon on August 12, 2005. The samples were collected from the East Blanco Depression (EBD) diffuse-flow hydrothermal field, which was determined in a previous study to cover an area of at least 100 m by 80 m (Hein et al., 1999). The survey reported on here extends that field to more than 1500 m in an approximately N-S direction. The EBD, a pull-apart basin, occurs near the western end of the Blanco Fracture Zone (BFZ), which connects the Juan de Fuca and Gorda Ridge spreading centers (Fig. 1). The samples were collected from a waterdepth range of 3343-3380 m.

Herein, concept designs of two different types of mining robots are concerned, which are aimed for developments of deep seabed mineral resources: polymetallic nodules (PMN) and seabed massive sulfides (SMS), respectively. Continuous mining concepts are presented based on technical and environmental feasibility, where the environmental and functional differences for commercial productions are investigated. Needs and roles of versatile mining robots are explained as a key of continuous mining system. The functional requirements and design characteristics of mining robots to satisfy the top requirements from customers are described comparatively. Schemes of axiomatic design and quality function deployment (QFD) are utilized: functional requirements (FR) are defined, technical requirements (TR) are figured out, design parameters (DP) are derived, and degrees of importance of design parameters are evaluated. Analogy and discrepancy in remote operation methods are put side by side. A pilot scale mining robot for PMN and a commercial scale one for SMS are suggested in form of concept designs. PMN mining robot is shaped as a multiple configuration of unit robot modules in side dimension, in which the unit robot module consists of two tracks and two pick-up modules. SMS mining robot is based on a four-tracked vehicle. Main platform is mounted on the vehicle through turn-table. Excavation device consists of two-articulated boom and cutter tool. Crushing-and-pumping units are placed same in both robot platforms.

Coastal and marine aggregate (sand and gravel) mining on US continental shelves is a major activity that supplies industrial and commercial demands for these raw materials. Because Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts contain significant shoreline segments that are in a critical state of erosion, sand-gravel and mixed sediment (sands with a high percentage of silt-plus-clay) deposits are mined in efforts to mitigate land loss. Sandy shores, and to a limited extent gravel coasts, erode by shoreline retreat due to relative sea-level rise and sediment starvation in littoral drift patterns. Mostly gravel shores occur in high latitudes and shorelines often advance seaward due to isostatic rebound following the LGM (Last Glacial Maximum 18,000 YBP). Sandy and fine-grained shores occurring in middle and low latitudes of the conterminous United States are problem coasts that require beach renourishment and reconstruction of barrier islands. Muddy coasts of the Mississippi Delta region are especially problematic because some islands are literally disappearing in response to subsidence. Replacement of sediments lost to the littoral drift system or returned to sedimentary sinks by drowning is thus a critical endeavor that involves annually dredging hundreds of millions of cubic meters of sediments from the continental shelf area. The types of shelf sediments that are amenable to marine mining techniques, their occurrence, and means of detection are highlighted in this paper. Minable Sediments on the Continental Shelf Wide varieties of sedimentary bodies that occur on the continental shelf are amenable to mining for beach renourishment and barrier island (beach-dune-marsh system) reconstruction. Relict terrestrial deposits make up a small but important proportion of shelf sediments that were deposited on coastal plains, now drowned by the post-glacial sea-level rise to form continental shelves. Examples of these deposits include drowned moraines, outwash plains, eskers, and kettles along the northern Atlantic coast in addition to siliciclastics along middle latitude Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts. Special cases include carbonate sequences along tropical costs of Florida and the muddy coasts of deltas, mostly in Louisiana. Specific types of minable deposits thus include shoreface attached sand sheets, dunes, and ridges in addition to offshore inter-reefal sands (between coral reefs in the Florida Reef Tract), bank deposits, and sand waves (ridges) that extend into US territorial waters. Nearshore siliciclastics include ebb-tidal deltas and bars. Drowned river valleys occur along all three US coasts and can be exploited for their fluvial sands if the covering mud sheets are thin.

Ferromanganese crusts are found on most hard-rock substrates in the deep ocean (800-3,000 m). Their distributions on seamounts are complex and controlled by a wide-variety of factors including seamount morphology, current patterns, mass wasting, substrate rock type and age, subsidence history, and others. However, the development of this potential resource ultimately depends on this distribution, as well as on the small-scale topography, grade, and tonnage. The parameters that will ultimately be used to define a mine site are unknown, but reasonable assumptions based on 25 years of data collection can be used to bracket likely permissive characteristics.

Recommendations have been drafted following an international multidisciplinary panel discussion organized at UNESCO/IOC by the Académie des Sciences d?Outre-Mer on 15 December 2010 conveyed, according to its mandate, to the French government and to an international pool of scientists and stakeholders. These take into consideration the relevant Provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982, the Rio ?Earth Summit? Convention of Biological Diversity of 5 June 1992 as well as the activities and recommendations implemented for the world?s oceans and seas, in particular by the International Seabed Authority (ISA) and the recent reports and scientific works (including those implemented by the ISA Kaplan, Ifremer, COI-Unesco). The recommendations integrate, for one of the ecosystems, the conclusions of the project of the conclusions of an IOC-UNESCO / Government of Flanders project (2004-2010) implemented by Dr. V. The Manus Spreading Ridge is located within the EEZ of Papua New Guinea and lies in the Manus Basin ENE of the PNG Island and N of the Island New Britain. The divergent backarc spreading system is caused by the subduction of the Solomon plate in the South under the Bismarck plate in the North along the lineament of the New Britain trench. The rate of divergence is relatively high compared to other back arc spreading systems and amounts up to 12 cm/year [3]. Since submarine volcanism and associated hydrothermal circulation as important parts of the oceanic heat transfer system are also dependent on the rate of spreading, hydrothermal fluid venting and respective deposition of polymetallic sulfides can be expected there. In late 1985 first indications for hydrothermal activity were observed on a swell within the central rift valley of the Manus Spreading Centre during a photographic survey of the seafloor by an expedition of the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics with the American RV Moana Wave [1]. Detailed geological investigations including successful sampling were first carried out in June 1990 within the scope of the OLGA II research project (conducted by Prof. Tufar, Marburg) using the German RV Sonne equipped with a deep-sea television sledge and Tvcontrolled grab systems. Simultaneously a research cruise with the Russian RV Akademic Mstivlav Keldysh took place using the manned submersible Mir; the findings of the OLGA II cruise were immediately used for planning and organization of the Mir dives [3]. The massive sulphide samples which we used for our geochemical and mineralogical studies originate from the hydrothermal fields 1 and 2 and are from grab stations of the OLGA II expedition [4].

Nautilus Minerals, the world?s leader in exploration and development of deep ocean seafloor resources, is today focused on the recovery of high-grade copper and gold in seafloor massive-sulphide mineralization. These targeted mineralized belts, analogous to land-based volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, are located near plate boundaries in the back arc basins of the Western Pacific. The first deposit to be developed by the company is located at a depth of 1,600 meters at Solwara 1, in the benign waters of the Bismarck Sea. This location lies within the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea. From 2006 to 2009 the company completed detailed environmental and geological studies at Solwara 1, culminating in a number of world firsts, including the first Environmental Permit granted for the extraction of seafloor massive sulphide deposits and the first NI 43-101 compliant seafloor massive sulphide deposit resource statement. Nautilus has relied heavily on proven deepwater technologies from the oil and gas industry in the design of its production system. Pipeline trenching units, workclass ROVs, deepwater production risers and drill cuttings removal systems will be adapted to initiate this new and exciting industry. Key contractors used by Nautilus on this innovative project have all been selected for their deepwater experience (gained in the oil and gas industry), creativity and determination to launch this new industry successfully. Innovation is at the forefront of Nautilus? success to date. This paper summarizes the progress to date of this development which will provide a new source of minerals for the world and which will contribute to sustainable growth for the future.

The report is about oceanic ferromanganese crusts ? covers of iron and manganese hydroxides developed over an opened rock of seamounts and rises. Ore bed parameters of crusts are understandable as their thickness and content of main economic components ? manganese, cobalt and nickel. All known results of research activity on ferromanganese manganese crusts point to that crust are characterized by notable variability of thicknesses and composition. It is possible to separate few levels of variability. The most evident is the first level of parameters variability, which is manifested in various regions of the Ocean, and connected first of all, with an age of submarine mountains, a host objects for a crusts. It was proved by many authors, that most powerful crusts are connected with submarine mountains of Cretaceous age. [1]. Crust thickness at the Magellan Seamounts reaches, for example 12-15 cm, sometimes exceeds 20-22 cm. Thicknesses of Hawaii Archipelago or Tuamotu crusts in 3-4 times less. Biostratigraphy studies of crustal sections at the Magellan Seamounts already show, that its main part started to form in the Late Paleocene. Four layers with well expressed features in structure and composition of a layer are separated in the section. From foot to top: Late Paleocene ? Early Eocene layer I-1, Middle-Late-Eocene layer I-2, Miocene layer II and Pliocene ? Quaternary layer III. Relics of more ancient Campanian ? Maastrichtian ore layer [2, 4] were discovered. It is evident for example, that Oligocene mountains could not be a host for two lower layers in the crust section.

The Afanasiy-Nikitin Seamounts (ANS) in Eastern Equatorial Indian Ocean (Figure 1) are shown to be the exposed part of the presently buried 85°E Ridge system under the Bengal Fan sediment and were emplacement around 75-80 m.y. ago (Krishna, 2003). The first recovery of ferromanganese crusts from the ANS was made during 1994, and the samples (Figure 2) provided important clues on the evolution of this seamount (Banakar et al., 1997).

The continental shelves occupy a vast area of Russia and contain complexes of commercial placer minerals. Of prime importance are Cenozoic placers of valuable minerals including gold, cassiterite, diamonds, chromite, platinoids, and minerals of titanium, zirconium and rare earth elements, biogenic amber and fossil ivory (1). Commercial placer minerals are associated with shelf placer formation zones (SPFZ). These zones are located at junctions of marginal orogens and shelf troughs in morphostructures where upwarping, subsidence, and sign-variable neotectonic movements are not significant. The SPFZs are characterized by ancient buried leveling planes with mantles of waste, series of wave-cut aggradation terraces on land and beneath the sea, and drowned and buried stream valleys. The occurrence of mineral placers in the SPFZs was caused by endogenic mineralization and exogenic placer hosted formation. Concentrations of commercial biogenic minerals are associated with areas of burial of biogenic material (release of resins by plants and theriofauna thanatocoenoses) and with their transition zones. Since the Oligocene, alternations in marine transgression-regression have dominated the shelf areas. This has resulted in the formation of polygenic placers. Climatic conditions are of great importance: warm and humid climate in the Paleogene-Neogene changed to colder climates in the late Pliocene (polar type sedimentation; formation of permafrost strata and sea glaciation). These events are responsible for the regularity in placer formation during the Cenozoic in which the early Cenozoic (Eocene-Oligocene-Miocene) and late Cenozoic (late Pliocene-early Pleistocene and late Pleistocene-Holocene) epochs are prominent.

In late 1988, the Committee for Coordination of Joint Prospecting for Mineral Resources in South Pacific Offshore Areas (CCOP/SOPAC), Suva, Fiji, consulted the Continental Shelf Division of the Marine Minerals Technology Center regarding low-tech, low-cost, reconnaissance sampling systems for a variety of nearshore needs. Materials of interest to several member island nations included silica and calcareous aggregate for cement manufacture, sand for beach replenishment, heavy minerals, and precious metals. A principal criteria of the system was that it be of low-tech design, and as far as possible, suitable for construction on the islands from available materials. It should also be operable with SOPAC personnel on island vessels of opportunity. The system selected to satisfy these requirements was a convertible drill of basic airlift design, capable of operating with easy modification as either a vibralift or airlift, depending on the desired application. The basic system included a drill pipe constructed of heavy duty 76 mm (3") black iron pipe, divided into three 3 meter sections (for ease of transport), fitted with an air intake manifold and bit at the lower end. A 25 mm (1") galvanized pipe assembled in three similar sections and clamped to the drill pipe served as a water jet to assist in cutting. Air was supplied to the manifold by means of a 12 mm (1/2") pipe also clamped along the length of the drill pipe. "Co-rich ferromanganese crust deposits exist on slopes, summits and platforms of seamounts and guyots throughout the global oceans, where deep-sea currents have kept the seafloor structures more or less free of sediment for millions of years. They form by direct precipitation from cold seawater under more or less oxic conditions and consist of thin layers (2 up to 25 cm thick) covering hard substrate rocks in water depths of 800 to 5000m (Halbach and Marbler, 2009; Hein et al., 2000). Besides Mn these crusts contain interesting concentrations of minor elements (Co, Ni, Ti and Cu) and trace elements (Mo, W, Te, Ga, Pt and REEs), thus they represent significant metal deposits and promise potentially valuable additions to the world’s metal resources.The prospects for mining of this marine type of metal deposits largely depend on the grades and the scale of the potential ore resources. However, only a few percent of existing seamounts and guyots have been mapped and sampled in detail, most of them in the Pacific Ocean. Therefore, a model to estimate the geological resources based on the global seamount catalogue of Wessel (2001; revised: Wessel et al., 2009) and the empirical parameters which control the metal composition and distribution was developed."

The Logatchev hydrothermal field is situated on the east inner flank of the rift valley of the MAR at 14°45?N and is hosted by serpentinized peridotites and minor gabbronorites while basalts are subordinate. Hydrothermal precipitates recovered from the Logatchev field during a recent R/V Meteor cruise include massive chalcopyrite chimneys, massive pyrite crusts, silicified breccias, abundant secondary Cu-sulfides, red jaspers, abundant Fe-Mn-oxyhydroxides as well as atacamite and Mn-oxides (Kuhn et al., 2004). Previous results of hydrothermal fluid studies in the Logatchev field are somewhat at odds with theoretical models of ultramafic-seawater reaction. Butterfield et al. (2003) suggested that the Fe component of orthopyroxene plays the more important role compared to olivine in ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems. This consideration is supported by the recovery of large amounts of Opx-rich gabbronorites and orthopyroxenites in the Logatchev field (Kuhn et al., 2004). A possible tool to constrain the contribution of the different rock types (ultramafics, mafics, MORB) to a seafloor hydrothermal system is the systematic analysis of 187/188Os ratios of the host rocks as educts and the sulfides as products. For instance, abyssal peridotites mainly display low 187/188Os ratios (<0.127); in contrast MORB and gabbronorites have radiogenic ratios of >0.13 (Snow and Reisberg, 1995), orthopyroxenite has ratios of about 0.174 (Büchl et al., 2002) and seawater has an ever higher 187/188Os of about 1 (Sharma et al., 1997). Therefore, massive sulfides predominantly leached from ultramafic rocks should have Os isotopic ratios plotting on a mixing line between the ultramafic rocks and seawater (in a 187/188Os vs. 1/Os diagram), whereas those derived from MORB, gabbronorites and/or orthopyroxenites will be plotting on different mixing lines.

Polymetallic nodule mining presents mankind with a unique opportunity to advance the world?s sustainable development aspirations, particularly given the ultimate beneficiaries from polymetallic nodule mining will be the billions of people around the world that require greater access to more affordable minerals for their social and economic development. This paper discusses the importance of polymetallic nodule mining in the context of sustainable development and forecasted growth trends, supply and demand dynamics, the decreasing grade and quality of terrestrial mineral resources, and the Green Economy, as well as in light of a comparative analysis that demonstrates polymetallic nodule mining offers a socially and environmentally advantageous alternative to terrestrial mining.

The development of marine mining in the offshore areas adjacent to most of the insular and continental European States is limited by the complex and evolving nature of its legal regime on the basis of the relevant applicable international, European and domestic rules. As the development of marine mining requires investments in capital-intensive technologies, the bankable feasibility of marine mining projects is very much dependent on the legal security of mining rights, assets and operations in offshore areas. This is quite difficult to assess due to the constant accumulation of applicable and potentially conflicting international and domestic laws in these areas, in particular the coastal zone, the territorial sea, and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The often conflicting interaction of international treaties, laws and regulations in offshore areas raises specific and major issues in terms of permitting processes, access rights, ownership rights over the mineral resources explored and mined, flag vs. coastal State jurisdiction over mining vessels and marine mining equipment, international environmental liabilities, and unitisation and multi-forum disputes. In addition, the determination of jurisdiction and the legal regime under which marine mining could take place is becoming even more complex with the development of EU Law and the recent revision of the International Law of the Sea, particularly the new extension regime of the EEZ and jurisdiction over the continental shelf.

The chemical composition of the nodules varies with the type of manganese minerals and the size and characteristics of their nucleus, but those who have an economic interest have the following composition: Mn 29%, Fe 6% Si 5%, Al 3%, Ni 1.4%, Cu 1.3%, Co 0.25%, Na 1.5%, Ca 1.5%, Mg 0.5%, K 0.5%, Ti 0.2 0.2% and Ba 0.2% (Morgan, 2000; ISA, 2002). The Pacific Rim is an area of abundant occurrence of polymetallic nodules (Glasby et al., 1980; Morgan, 2000). According to these authors, the Pacific sea floor of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) is one of the most interesting areas in regard to the genesis of polymetallic nodules. Their abundance in the ocean floor is very variable, as there are places where they cover more than 70% of the ocean floor. The nodules can be found at any depth, but the highest concentrations are between 4000 and 6000m (Morgan et al., 1993). In studies conducted in the EEZ of the Mexican Pacific are those made within the project "Research on the origin, process and distribution of minerals in the Pacific ocean floor in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Mexico". Within this project Rosales (1989) conducted studies on the origin, process and distribution of polymetallic nodules, finding that a number of processes give origin to nodules, being diagenesis one of the main mechanisms of elements that contribute to the nodules. Besides hydrothermal processes that are carried near the East Pacific Rise at 21° N, inputs are contributing to the nodules metallic elements and sediments, especially in regions close to the dorsal, as a greater influence hydrogenetic processes occurs westward (Rosales and Carranza, 1990). In 1993, after cruise MIMAR II, Carranza and Rosales refer that metals such as Cu, Co, Ni, Sn, Fe, Mg, Pb, Zn and Ba may have a relationship with the East Pacific hydrothermal activity and sea currents carry these metals in solution to the Clarion-Clipperton fracture area, where there are hydrogenic metals sources (Al, Fe and Mn). As result of chemical analysis of Mn, Cu, Ni and Co, polymetallic nodules observed in part of the EEZ of Mexico are possible of potential economic interest (Rosales and Carranza, 1990, 2001; Carranza and Rosales, 2003).

Despite the very large offshore Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) area of Greenland (in excess of 2 mill. km2) virtually no work has been carried out on marine minerals on the ocean floor. Apart from a single reconnaissance survey by a mining company, major activities have been those of oil companies exploring the West Greenland shelf in the early seventies. The West Greenland shelf and its extensions is the most obvious area for year-around accessability when looking for marine mineral deposits. So far, only one onshore placer deposit has been found - ilmenite deposit near Thule, NW Greenland, whereas a gold placer in South Greenland presently is being evaluated.

This project funded by Government of Flanders (Belgium) and coordinated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission proposes to draw recommendations for conservation of the biodiversity and for minimizing the impact of future nodule mining from the description of the referential state of suprabenthic megafaunal assemblages within a nodule ecosystem in the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCFZ). The description of this specific ecosystem is based on the analysis of about 200 000 photographs and some 55 hours of film collected by French and American exploratory cruises. The video and hotographic sampling has been achieved by means of different towed and remote control devices designed for Ifremer and NOAA including the manned submersible “the Nautile.”
