Chemical conversion coating is a process to create thin oxide/hydroxide film containing several inorganic/organic compounds by way of chemical deposition reaction. In case of the application to Mg mobile electronic housings, the film should possess a good electric conductivity while keeping adequate corrosion resistance and working as a paint base. The use of toxic/hazardous chemicals is strictly prohibited from the environmental aspects. This paper describes the recent trend of conversion coating used for Mg electronic housings and analyzes critically from the point of surface technology. The importance of cleaning process and understanding of surface microstructure are particularly emphasized with several experimental results.

"Mining OperationsOre will be mined by open pit techniques. Because of the high grade of the deposit and the low strip ratio, mining rates are small relative to most other open pit operations.The ore deposit is located in the valley of the main fork of Red Dog Creek. The bulk of the deposit is located on the southwestern flank of the creek, but mineralization does traverse the creek in both the north and east directions.Erosion has exposed the orebody in a number of locations, and has resulted in oxidation of the mineralization closer to the surface. Although much of this oxide material is very high grade, it leaches readily and, at least in the initial phases of the operation, will be stockpiled and not treated in the concentrator.During construction, 2.3 million mt. (2.5 million st.) of overburden and waste will be stripped from the orebody to expose ore for initial operations. Competent non-mineralized waste will be used to build roads and waste dumps, but the bulk of material removed consists of oxide or ice-rich soils and weathered rock which is not suitable for construction.The annual ore mining rate will be 1.9 million mt. (21. million st.). The strip ratio will start off at 1.2 to 1, falling to 1.0 to 1 by year 5 and ultimately to 0.8 to 1.Bench heights are set at 7.6 m (25 ft). Pit slopes will vary depending on the material present in the wall. The slope, through competent waste and the sulphide package, was set at 45 degrees. This is flattened to 26 degrees (i.e. 2: 1) through overburden and Upper Kivalina shales. The Kivalina Shales are an ice-rich shale whose carbonate matrix has been leached out and which exhibits little or no strength as it thaws. In addition, a 100 ft containment berm will be left in the wall below overburden and Kivalina."

"Mining companies around the world are embracing geometallurgical modeling at a rapid rate, as senior executives realize that inputs must be properly measured if the output is to be managed effectively. Geometallurgical modeling is used to scientifically manage risk in project evaluation, for plant design and production forecasting, and optimization of production planning and mineral processing/metallurgical unit operations. The technology also provides a solid foundation for implementing broad corporate strategies with respect to intelligent asset utilization and metal sales. Over the past five years, MinnovEX Technologies Inc. has been actively engaged in developing, promoting and applying geometallurgical modeling technology for major mining companies around the world. This paper describes the methodology for successfully applying the technology for the unit operations of comminution and flotation in the mining industry.INTRODUCTIONGeometallurgical modeling (referred hereon as geomet modeling), in theory, can be applied to its full potential on all unit operations in mineral processing; however, this paper will concentrate on two of the largest unit operations, namely comminution and flotation, where the technology is actually being practiced by many large mining companies. For concept studies and prefeasibility studies, aspects of geometallurgical technology are regularly applied but in a less rigorous manner than for final feasibility studies where justification for funds is sought. This paper will focus on the final feasibility stage of a project and on existing operations or planned expansions, where the full power of geometallurgical technology is brought to bear in a cost effective manner.One of the unique aspects of geomet modeling, when used to its potential, is the ability to design plants, and forecast and plan production with a quantifiable degree of precision, something that was unattainable in the past. This means that when new comminution and flotation plants are designed, the mining companies and financial institutions involved in the project can measure the precision of the design and therefore better understand and manage project risk. It means that for existing and new operations, metal sales personnel can carry out their sales strategies with a much better understanding of the degree of error associated with production forecasts of concentrate/metal and quality of concentrates. For mine and mill managers, geomet modeling allows the effect of the mine plan on the downstream processes to be quantified; thereby allowing the mine plan to be recast in a more optimized manner. Finally, existing concentrator personnel can optimize their unit operations based on a more definitive understanding"

"A brief summary of the environmental testing and analyses required to ensure and maintain compliance of mining properties will be discussed. Programs for new and existing properties and for properties which may be purchased will be outlined and potential solutions to problems will be discussed. In addition to the compliance aspects of operations, due diligence will be discussed.1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe impact of mining projects on the environment is an area of major concern to the public, governmental agencies and mining companies. Due to the ever increasing pressure on the government by special interest groups and the public, governments have implemented legislation to control potential environmental impact of mining, from the exploration phase through to close-out. By not planning for environmental issues during all phases of a mining operation, unavoidable delays and retrofitted environmental programmes will be expensive and cause projects to be delayed, which, ultimately, may cause the abandonment of a mining prospect. Most jurisdictions require at least one full year of background environmental data. Therefore, many thousands of dollars are wasted as construction is interfered with or held up due to data collection. This may be avoided by a thousand dollars worth of sample being collected and analyzed early in the project."

"A comparison of data from INPUT, GEOTEM, and MEGATEM airborne electromagnetic (AEM) systems over the Aldermac deposit, Québec, Canada, was undertaken to evaluate the relative ef¬ficiency of these systems for the detection of small, deep conductors. The Aldermac orebody was mined between 1933 and 1934 to a depth of 200 m. A deeper mineralized zone was discovered in 1987. The MEGATEMII system was used to acquire 90- and 30-Hz data over the deposit in 2003 as part of a research project. These MEGATEMII data were compared with data acquired by other AEM systems (GEOTEM and INPUT), and the results show that the MEGATEMII response is ten times larger than the other sys¬tems. For the dB/dt response, 30 Hz gives a better signal-to-noise ratio, whereas 90 Hz has a better signal-to-noise ratio on the B-field.The data were evaluated by numerical modeling. The deposit was best represented by a complex mod¬el, comprising two weakly conductive bodies to approximate the alteration halo, two deeper prisms repre¬senting known orebodies, and three bodies ranging in thickness from 3 to 6 m and in resistivity from 12 to 20 ohm·m, representing the chargeable overburden. This implies that the MEGATEMII system is able to see a small conductive body at more than 200 m depth in an area where the response is contaminated by conductive overburden."

This paper presents the conceptual design of a magnetically-levitated skip for use in an underground mine. A skip is used to move rock from an underground mine to its surface processing facility. Conventionally the skip is raised and lowered by cables, similar to an elevator. In a magnetically-levitated skip, the cable is replaced with a linear induction or synchronous motor to provide propulsion and levitation. Removal of the cables in a magnetically-levitated skip provides many advantages over a conventional system including the ability: to negotiate corners, to travel vertically in the shaft as well as horizontally to the mining face, and to move a very large volume of material using multiple skips in a small shaft. A magnetically-levitated skip is a safer, more environmentally-friendly, productive alternative to conventional skipping. It has the further advantage to decrease haulage distances for underground vehicles.

"The Marconaflo slurry system was originally developed to reduce costs and solve technical problems in the marine transport of mineral cargoes. In the short time since its inception, it has been found to offer economies and advantages for land-based and in-plant materials handling. This efficient method of reclaiming and slurrying particulate materials at very high pulp densities can be directly utilized in a wide variety of mineral process systems. These include: storage-reclaim applications, where even cohesive, compacted materials can be reclaimed from settled storage ""on demand""; the growing number of hydrometallurgical operations wherein slurried materials are processed to extract or yield metals; certain applications associated with pyrometallurgical treatment; and as a means of augmenting the performance of conventional mineral dressing equipment, such as thickeners.INTRODUCTIONIn the continuing effort to lower costs of producing minerals and extracting metals, the field of handling and transportation often receives too little attention from those engaged in the mining and winning of ores and metals. This comment, which pertains to ferrous and non-ferrous as well as to non-metallic producers, is especially pertinent to products having relatively low value, where transport costs can be a major portion of the delivered selling price to the minerals receiver.One method which was developed recently for the purpose of reducing costs and solving technical problems in marine transport and handling of mineral cargoes is the MARCONAFLO slurry system. A notable feature of this system is its versatility; in addition to its use in marine transport1*, some of its diverse applications have included the mining and reclaiming of tailings2 and in-plant materials handling3. As the concept and fundamentals of this system have been well explained previously4,5, the mechanics of the system will not be elaborated upon here. Rather some specific ways in which MARCONAFLO can be applied to processing and extraction will be explored."

"This paper reports on an investigation into gas and dust concentrations in Ruttan Mine's exhaust air. The values obtained indicate that there is excellent potential to recirculate approximately 25% of the hot exhaust air into the intake air to reduce winter heating costs. Contaminant concentrations vary significantly during the course of the working shift and decrease in the mine exhaust system as the air returns to surface. A proposed on-line control system is outlined which would permit recirculation to be implemented with a pay-back period of less than two years. IntroductionIncreased energy costs and depressed mineral prices have resulted in mines, which use winter ventilation air heating, reviewing their systems to try to reduce costs. Heating costs can be significant, for example, Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan spends an average of $580,000 per mine per year and Ruttan mine spends approximately $IM per year on propane for its direct-fired heating system.Several method s of reducing heating costs have been considered and the following have potential application.Heat Exchange Between Exhaust andIntakeThis is usually accomplished by run-round glycol systems. The system is limited by ice formation on the coils in wet exhaust air and by the low exhaust air temperature, usually l0ºC. It also requires close proximity of the intake and exhaust airways to ma~e the cost of the connecting pipeline and pump systems economic . A feasibility study by Inco's Thompson operation reported that a proposed system of this type had a 19-year payback period and was, therefore, uneconomic. Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan is currently investigating plastic heat exchangers for a trial system because of corrosion on metal exchangers. It has the advantage of a 17°C exhaust temperature and relatively dry exhaust air.Waste Heat ReclamationThe waste heat from compressors and hoists can be used for heating in some mines. The feasibility of such a system depends on the individual layout and the proximity of the heat source to the inlet airway. Other mines have considered using the exhaust air in greenhouses to provide a cash crop."

This paper introduces the technical characteristics, transformation scheme and production practice of the project in which Copper P-S Converter was replaced by Bottom Blowing Continuous converting for the first time, and introduces the technical achievements obtained by the project. The application practice proves that bottom blowing copper continuous converting technology can completely solve the problems of fugitive off-gas pollution in the ladle transportation, large amount of flue gas and fluctuation of flue gas caused by P-S converting. Comprehensive energy consumption and operating costs of producing blister copper, safety and environmental risks are greatly reduced, and economic, environmental and social benefits are significant. It is one of the preferred technologies for upgrade and to replace P-S converting technology. INTRODUCTION At present, more than 80% of copper production capacity is still using the P-S converting technology with a history of more than 100 years. During P-S converting process, melted copper matte needs to be transported by ladle, and it needs to rotate the furnace body several times, causing a lot of serious environmental and safety risks such as SO2 flue gas emission and low-altitude SO2 pollution. In addition, the high operating cost caused by low rate of air blowing, the short life of the refractory materials and high energy consumption during P-S converting become big problems. Other problems such as large amount of flue gas, low SO2 concentration, large fluctuation of flue gas volume and SO2 concentration, and discontinuous flue gas cause high cost of subsequent flue gas treatment are also needing to be solved. In order to solve these problems during the P-S converting, metallurgical engineer in various countries has spared a lot of efforts to develop continuous blowing process for decades. Located in Timmins, Ontario the Porcupine Joint Venture, a pooling of assets between two existing operations (the Dome Operation of Placer Dome (CLA) and the Hoyle Pond Operation of Kinross Gold Corporation) came about on July 1st, 2002; Placer being the manager of the Joint Venture with 51% ownership and Kinross with 49%. The formation of the Joint Venture was the realization of the dream of many who could envision the benefits of the whole area being operated as one entity ? the combination of the majority of assets in the Porcupine Camp into one venture containing tremendous synergistic potential of manpower, infrastructure, land tenure and exploration development. The name Porcupine in the gold mining industry brings with it the legacy of world class gold mines; the Hollinger, McIntyre and Dome with a proud tradition of excellence. The name Porcupine brings with it the legacy of over twenty individual mining companies in operation at any one time, producing over 65 million ounces of gold.

Conventional approaches to estimating reserves and optimizing mine planning and production forecasting result in single, often biased forecasts. This is largely due to the non-linear propagation of errors in understanding orebody attributes from a limited finite number of drilling data, throughout the chain of mine planning and mining. A new mine planning paradign is considered herein to include two interacting and potentially fusing elements: stochastic simulation and stochastic optimization. These two elements provide an expanded mathematical framework that allows the modelling of orebody uncertainty and its direct integration to mine design, production planning and valuation of mining projects and operations. This stochastic framework has shown to increase the value of production schedules in the order of 25%. In addition, case studies show that stochastic optimal pit limits are about 15% larger in terms of total tonnage, compared to the conventional (deterministic) optimal pit limits. This difference extends life of mine and adds approximately 10% of net present value (NPV) to the NPV reported above from stochastic production scheduling within the conventionally optimal pit limits. Furthermore, results suggest a potential new contribution to the sustainable utilization of natural resources.

"The location of Quintette Coal Limited's pit and geologic nature of the dedicated reserves combine to introduce a number of factors which can adversely affect waste dump stability. These factors include steep terrain, variable material type and particle size, and precipitation. This paper describes the solutions to related waste dump problems. A brief geotechnical review of the waste dumps is given and Quintette's operational strategies during periods of dump stability and instability are discussed. Despite best efforts, failures occasionally occur and discussion is included on Quintette's success at bringing failed dumps safely back into use. IntroductionQuintette Coal Limited (QCL) property is situated on the east slope of the Rocky Mountains near Tumbler Ridge, approximately 120 km southwest of Dawson Creek, British Columbia. This surface mine is located on mountainous terrain and is subject to climatic extremes of wind, precipitation and temperature.QCL has a current annual production of 4.75 million tonnes of metallurgical coal with a stripping ratio of 7: 1. This correctly implies the extraction of over 33 million bank cubic metres (BCM) of waste which is placed on numerous waste dumps at various locations adjacent to the pit.There are three active pits - Mesa, Wolverine, and Shikano (Fig. 1). Shikano is a newly developed pit located near the plant site. It is not subject to the unique dump management problems prevalent at the Mesa and Wolverine pits, therefore the Shikano waste dumps will not be discussed . The dumps for the Mesa and Wolverine pits, however, have been technically and operationally challenging since shortly after mining began in 1983. Their characteristics, associated site specifics and management, therefore, are the subject of this paper.Waste dump locations for the Mesa and Wolverine pits are shown in Figures 2 and 3 as is the relative waste distribution . Each sub-pit is connected to a principal waste dump in reasonable proximity and to an alternate dump should disposal of waste be necessary at that location. The waste dumps are constructed from the top elevations initially to coincide with subpit development. In the initial years (1-7) waste dump heights will be up to 250 m, then, as the mine matures (8-20 years), waste dump maximum heights will continuously decrease to coincide with lower bench elevations"

"Gulf Minerals (Canada) Limited' s Rabbit Lake Uranium Operation is located in the northern portion of Saskatchewan, 198 miles southeast of Uranium City and 134 miles northwest of Lynn Lake Manitoba.This paper describes flow sheet changes to solve operating problems and briefly describes future changes to accommodate the new ""B"" Zone ore.The Rabbit Lake mill was designed to process 1600 dry tons per day of uranium ore, with an average grade of 0.370 percent u3o8. In 1981, the mill processed 2040 tons per day at a grade of 0.231 percent u3o8 . The process modifications and flow sheet changes that allowed this increase in tonnage will be discussed in relative chronological order. Mill feed was introduced on June 10, 1975, the original equipment consisted of an Ingersoll Rand hydraulic breaker mounted over a 24"" square grizzly. The - 24"" ore was fed to a 2011 X 6"" seflli autogenous grate discharge mill close circuited with 20"" cyclones, the mill discharge was screened on a tyler double deck screen with the undersize (8 rnesh) reporting to the cyclones, the screen oversize was returned by conveyor belt to the mill feed chute.The cyclone overflow (28 mesh) was thickened in a 100' diameter thickener to obtain 55 percent solids for the leach circuit.The leach circuit consisted of two slurry holding tanks and five leach tanks."

"Pamour Porcupine Mines of Timmins, Ontario operates two 3,000 ton per day concentrators which receive ore from eight to ten mines in the area. The area milling concept was adopted by Pamour in 1971 and has been used successfully since then. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the advantages and the problems of area milling. Pamour Porcupine Mines Limited operates two 3,000 ton per day concentrators which receive ore from eight to ten mines in the Porcupine region. The area milling concept was adopted as the route to survival for Pamour and has worked successfully. HISTORICAL BACKGROUNDProduction of gold from the Porcupine region in Northern Ontario started in the early 1900's and has been continuous since that time. Some of the major operators were companies such as Mcintyre, Hollinger, Dome, Pamour, Paymaster and the list goes on. An underground survey would reveal hundreds of miles of drifts and raises. The main group of mines extends from South East of Timmins to the Pamour Mine, 15 miles to the east. During the lean years of the sixties when gold prices were low, labour costs were rising rapidly, and ore grades were dropping, many of the area mines closed down their operations."

"BHP-Billiton’s Minera Escondida Limitada, in Chile, is one of the world’s largest copper producers. It treats a combined 10,500 tph of copper ore through its two concentrators: Los Colorados and Laguna Seca. The performance of the rougher circuit at each concentrator was measured and analysed using the JKTech flotation optimisation methodology. This involved developing a flotation model for each concentrator based on cell operating parameters (for example bubble surface area flux and froth recovery) and feed ore floatability characteristics. The rougher circuit performance was evaluated in terms of traditional measures, such as grade and recovery. The operation was also analysed using the measured cell operating parameters and ore floatability and the effect of these with regard to performance (grade / recovery) was assessed.This paper presents a comparison of the rougher circuit at each concentrator in terms of these parameters. The main differences in rougher circuit performance between the two plants were attributed to differences in feed ore floatability characteristics and froth recovery. The comparison highlighted opportunities where performance improvements could be made. The study also showed the usefulness of separating the flotation process into easily measurable subprocesses to further identify the different mechanisms occurring in each rougher circuit. Traditional measures like grade and recovery are useful for monitoring flotation operation but this data lacks the depth to determine the root cause behind operational issues. Determining the operating parameters and ore floatability provides the operating plant metallurgist better tools to assess and manage these issues."

"Stillwater Mining Company recovers platinum and palladium from their Nye Montana operations. Mining first commenced at Nye in 1987 at a milling rate of 455 t/d (500 stpd). The plant was expanded in 1995 with the replacement of the ball mill and the addition of flotation capacity to increase mill throughput to 1820 t/d (2000 stpd). The applications for platinum and palladium have increased in recent years particularly in the automotive industry and the supply of the metals has remained fairly constant with prices for both platinum and palladium increasing and remaining very stable. In 1997 Stillwater initiated the expansion of their operations to increase production of platinum and palladium. Projects were initiated to expand production at the Nye operations, increase smelter and refining capacities at the Columbus facilities and to develop the extension of the orebody at the East Boulder site. This paper will discuss the changes at the Nye concentrator which were completed to increase production from 1820 t/d (2000 stpd) to 2730 t/d (3000 stpd) and eliminate some of the process bottlenecks.IntroductionStillwater Mining Company is mining the only significant primary source of PGMs outside of South Africa. The J-M Reef is an extensive mineralized zone containing PGMs that has been traced over a strike length of about 43 km (27 miles) in the southwest region of Montana. Stillwater controls the entire PGM mineralized zone.Johns-Manville geologists discovered palladium and platinum in the early 1970’s. In 1979, a Manville subsidiary entered into a partnership with Chevron, USA to develop the project. In 1 987, operations at the Stillwater property near Nye, Montana commenced."

"Control of analytical data quality is usually referred to in the mining industry as Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC), and involves the monitoring of sample quality and quantification of analytical accuracy and precision. QAQC procedures normally involve using sample duplicates and specially prepared standards whose grade is known. Numerous case studies indicate that reliable control of sample precision is achieved by using approximately 5% to 10% of field duplicates and 3% to 5% of pulp duplicates. These duplicate samples should be prepared and analyzed in the primary laboratory.Bias in the analytical results can be identified by inclusion of 3% to 5% of the standard in each sample batch. Several different standards are used, with values spanning the practical range of grades in the actual samples. A blank (a sample in which the concentration of metal of interest is below detection limit) should also be included. Standard samples alone cannot identify biases introduced during sample preparation, and therefore approximately 5% of the duplicate samples (coarse rejects and pulp) should be processed and assayed at another, external, reputable laboratory.This paper discusses techniques used for estimation of errors in precision and accuracy, and overviews diagnostic tools. It is shown that one of the most commonly used methods, the Thompson-Howarth technique, produces consistently lower results than other methods. These results reflect the nature of this method, which relies on the assumption of a normally distributed error, and thus produces biased results when errors have a skewed distribution. This study concurs with the suggestion of Stanley and Lawie (2007: Exploration and Mining Geology, v. 16, p. 265-274) to use the average coefficient of variation (CVAVR(%)) as the universal measure of relative precision error in mine geology applications: Le contrôle de la qualité des données analytiques est habituellement désigné sous l’appellation d’Assurance et Contrôle de la Qualité (ACQ), elle implique le suivi de la qualité des échan¬tillons et la quantification de la reproductibilité et la précision analytiques. "Laboratory-scale hydrochloric acid leach tests were conducted on an Elliot Lake uranium ore. Hydrochloric acid leaches without an oxidant or with molecular oxygen (i.e., air or pure oxygen gas) as an oxidant favoured uranium and radium extractions. Conditions for maximum uranium, thorium and radium extractions with hydrochloric acid in the presence of sodium chlorate were determined. The highest extractions of uranium (96%), thorium (81%) and radium (91%) were obtained using a mixture of 44.0 kg HCI and 2.5 kg NaCIOJ per tonne of ore at 75°C with 18 hours ' retention.Flowsheets for two-stage leaching are proposed. The residues obtained from the second-stage leach contain uranium (0.002%), thorium (0.006%) and radium (15 to 20 pCi/g). Tailings of this nature are considered suitable for mine backfill, and, if pyrite is removed, suitable for surfacedisposal.IntroductionThe nuclear energy industry forecasts an increasing demand for uranium. This increasing demand requires not only largescale mining and processing of conventional and complex uranium ores, but also leads to the consideration of new and nonconventional sources of uranium, e.g., black shales, phosphate rocks, granite, sea water and fossil-fuel ash.Sulphuric acid leaching is the most widely used process to extract uranium from the ore(l). The leach liquor is separated from the solids (tailings), purified, concentrated in various intermediate stages, and finally a semi-purified product, yellow cake (80-85070 U30 8) , is precipitated. The tailings, which constitute nearly 98% of the total bulk of most ores, are usually discarded in surface disposal areas.The Elliot Lake region of Ontario is one of the major uranium producing areas in Canada. The principal uranium minerals are brannerite and uraninite, present as microscopic grains in the matrix of quartz-pebble conglomerates. The average grade is between 0.10 and 0.15% UPs. Up to 6.5% pyrite is also present in the conglomerates. Because pyrite is less reactive toward sulphuric acid leaching, almost all the pyrite goes into the tailings and eventually into' the disposal sites."
