The present method of shipping potash to the myriad of consumers is inefficient, not only because of the extreme and unpredictable nature of seasonal demand, but also because railway car turnaround times are very lengthy. The Floating Train system employs unit trains of potash operating from Saskatchewan mines to distribution warehouses located throughout the six corn-belt states of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin , Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, transshipment points at Thunder Bay and the U.S. waterway network, and, where applicable , large consumers. These unit trains would "float", meaning that they would not originate at the same mine nor terminate at the same warehouse on each trip . They would " float " freely among the origins, destinations and participating railways. The potash would be shipped uniformly throughout the year and usually stored in warehouses located within the six states. It would be subsequently delivered to consumers within a 75-mile radius. Distribution warehouses and rolling stock would be provided by a new company, Potash Distribution Limited, consisting of major potash producers and the Canadian railways. Potash Distribution Limited would be responsible for the distribution of potash from the origin through the warehouses to the final consumer. The additional costs of providing warehouse space and outbound delivery will be offset by the reduction in both rail rates and "peaking" expenses.

This paper is a review of material selection considerations concerning protective coatings in the mining industry. The discussion will cover both capital-dollar projects and maintenance requirements. Emphasis will be on industrial finishes for structural steel and process equipment subjected to aggressive atmospheres. The presentation will cover the total needs of a job, emphasizing not only the owner's requirement for a cost-effective system during plant operations, but also taking into consideration the short-term requirements of general contractors, steel fabricators, erection firms and paint contractors.

"A SHORT WHILE AGO I enquired about The Mining Society of Nova Scotia. In all honesty I was apprehensive about addressing such a body if it was highly geared to the technical aspects of discovering and obtaining mineral resources. I was told that this would not be the case. Rather, there would likely be in attendance a broad cross section of people from business, industry and government and from across Canada and the U.S.A. Thus there would be an interest in a free-wheeling discussion of the prospects for industrial development in Cape Breton. Accordingly - being one who hates to miss an opportunity - I intend to exploit the invitation of your executive by being, over the next short while, frankly promotional. I would like to talk about what I consider to be some of the most important attributes of Cape Breton for industrial development and identify some of those prospects. Secondly, I will quickly review some of the things the Cape Breton Development Corporation is doing these days to stimulate some of that industrial development."

Bioleaching of a copper sulfide ore containing "activated pyrite", using a mixed culture of mesophilic bacteria, was studied. This type of copper ore had been found unsuitable for flotation because it produces a concentrate containing relatively high iron concentrations and, therefore, a low copper grade. Microscopic observations showed that pyrite particles had been activated by the formation of a thin film of chalcocite. Hence, a bioleaching process was considered as an alternative to treat this ore. Following shake flask and acid consumption tests, column tests of the crushed ore (75% -12.5 mm) were initiated and the effects of culture medium, agglomeration, and irrigation type on copper recovery were studied. The results showed that all the columns containing bacteria had copper recoveries around 90% compared to the abiotic control column with a recovery of 50%. It was concluded that bioleaching could be successfully utilized to process copper ores containing activated pyrite.

The Outokumpu HydroCopper® process is a chloride based atmospheric leaching process alternative that can treat a variety of different concentrates. Chalcopyrite and other copper sulfides can effectively be leached under atmospheric pressure in strong, aggressive chloride solution using copper (II) ions as oxidant. Impurities are removed from the solution as carbonates and ion exchange. Copper is precipitated from the purified pregnant leach solution as copper (I) oxide, which is filtered and reduced by hydrogen gas to metallic copper powder, which is melted and cast into copper product. Sodium chloride solution from copper (I) oxide precipitation is decomposed in a chloralkali electrolyser, to products of which are circulated back to the process. The process has been designed for copper concentrates and is a fast and economical way to produce copper wire rod directly from concentrate. The process can efficiently handle impurities like arsenic and mercury, which can be harmful in the pyrometallurgical processes. The process has been tested in the laboratory and 1 ton/day demonstration plant scale and it has been proven to be commercially viable. The process has been designed to meet the strictest directives for emissions. Other environmental factors are carefully considered to obtain the highest possible eco-efficiency.

This paper is not intended as an original contribution to this subject, but rather as a review of the main theories which are held with regard to placer deposits, with, of course, particular reference to the placers of British Columbia. The present interest in gold mining has, however, brought the subject of placers to the fore, and possibly a brief outline of the geology of such deposits will serve as a basis for discussion on the subject. In Canada, the most valuable of our placers are deposits of gold, and consequently the discussion will centre largely on placer-gold deposits. The same principles apply, of course, to placer deposits of other metals. The Origin of Placer Deposits As a starting point, the idea which is prevailingly held is that placer or alluvial gold is detrital in origin, that is to say, the gold originally existed in veins, lodes, or disseminations in the country rock of the regions in which the placer deposits are now found, and that, through the various erosive forces of nature, it was liberated from those veins or lodes and concentrated in the form in which we now find it. 1 have not time to go thoroughly into the proof of this, but the lines of evidence are many. If we take the Cariboo district as a typical example, Johnston and Uglow(l) have shown, first of all, that the placer and vein gold are identical in character. Crystals occur both in the placers and in the lodes, but the crystals in the placers are nearly always slightly worn, indicating transportation.

It is a great honour and privilege to be here in this distinguished company of the outstanding men in the mining industry and the political life of Canada. I fully recognize that I am so honoured as a symbol of the combination of American and Canadian leaders in industry who are partners in the sponsor-ship of the Quebec-Labrador iron-ore mining development which we are undertaking, and as such I want to express our great appreciation of the co-operation and assistance we have met on every hand in Canada, and the genuine friendliness and never-failing courtesy which we are always accorded. We are quite aware that it springs primarily from the very high regard in which our partner and sponsor, Jules Timmins, and our other Canadian associates are held. Their high standing among you is well known and we quite naturally fall heir to the benefits of the great esteem in which you hold them. Jules Timmins and his long-time associate, John Knox, were the original inspiration for our participation in this venture. It was their enthusiasm and vision which caught our interest and led to our joining with them in the years of exploration and search which have brought us to the threshold of this great development where we stand today. So much has been written of the details of our exploration and plans for future development that it would bore you for me to review them further here, but there is a phase of this development, and an extremely important phase of it, which I think has passed almost unnoticed and which it may be well worth while for me to bring to your attention this evening.

The technology to selectively leach gold, silver and base metals from ores, concentrates, and wastes, using an alkaline glycine solution, has initiated significant interest in using the new technology in various environments such as in-situ, in-place, dump, heap, and vat and agitated tank leaching. It has been shown that glycine acts synergistically with a number of other lixiviants to lower the net consumption of the other lixiviants while allowing low cost glycine solution recovery. Glycine is a non-toxic, stable, environmentally benign reagent that is available in bulk industrial quantities. It has the ability to dissolve most copper oxide and sulfide minerals, as well as native copper, whilst not interacting with acid consuming gangue nor dissolving iron and various or ubiquitous gangue elements. It acts synergistically with small amounts of cyanide to leach gold-copper ores at leach rates higher than either glycine or cyanide on their own, while significantly reducing cyanide consumption and eliminating detoxification requirements. The leaching behaviour of various glycine based systems will be reviewed, followed by the evaluation of the adsorption of gold onto activated carbon. Where the economics merit it, copper can be easily recovered using solvent extraction or sulfide precipitation.

On November 16, 1978, Finance Minister Chretien delivered his second formal budget in the House of Commons. Over-all, the provisions of the budget should provide moderate stimulus to the Canadian economy. With respect to the mining industry, the budget offers some welcome changes in the form of' improved write-offs for development expenses and social assets; higher investment tax credits; and a reduction in federal sales tax. On the other hand, income bond financing of new mineral ventures may be restricted.

From the view point of the mining engineer, the square-set method of stoping as practised at Butte, Montana, is one ?of the outstanding features of well conducted mining operations in that camp. The following information was obtained in the course of two months underground work in the Granite Mountain mine, during the summer of 1920, which is one of the properties of the North Butte Mining Company, situated on the well known Speculator vein. Most of the information was derived from personal observation and from discussions with various miners and with members of the staff. Geology The copper mining area of the Butte district is some two miles long by one and a half miles wide, a mineralized area in a great batholith of monzonite granite, locally known as the Boulder batholith. This extensive body of granite is traversed by several series of mineralized fault-fissures which differ in strike but generally dip steeply. Geologists agree that following the formation of the fissures, alkaline solutions ascended and decomposed the felspathic portions of the granite in the immediate vicinity of the fissure walls, and that these alkaline solutions were followed by cupiferous solutions which filled the fissures and replaced the granite next to the walls. A zone of oxidized ore, varying in thickness from 10 to 400 feet, overlies a sulphide zone containing chalcocite, enargite, bornite and chalcopyrite, with a small amount of quartz gangue. The veins are from 3 to 100 feet in width and contain, on the average, 3 per cent of copper, 2 ounces of silver, and 15 cents in gold per ton.

"The interest in the use of sensor-based particle ore sorting has increased significantly with the recent advances in the sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. This technology has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from the mine whilst delivering higher grades to the mill as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically, the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore-sorting and associated reductions in the consumption of energy, water and consumables. However, layout has a significant impact on the installed cost of a concentrator and the layout impacts from fitting an ore-sorting circuit into the concentrator plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects. These include additional crushing and screening requirement, transportation of the rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements) and effects on concentrator footprints.INRODUCTION Ore sorting has been practiced throughout history with an early report by Agricola in 1556. Metallic and non-metallic minerals were extracted from rocks by laboriously breaking them with hammers and picks and hand-picking selected material with higher grade off a table. The concept has not changed but the sorting technology has evolved significantly over the last 20 years. Ore sorting is usually a dry process in which a portion of the material is rejected based on mineral properties and/or grade. The methods used for sensing ore particles cover a large range of physical properties. A variety of sensors are available that differ on the discrimination technique that is used, which include: photometry, radiometry, conductivity, magnetism, microwave, X-ray transparency: X-ray transparency and luminescence and UV fluorescence (Sivamohan and Forssberg, 1991; Wotruba, 2006). There are two main ore sorting techniques: particle ore sorting and bulk ore sorting. According to Nadolski et al (2018), the potential for sorting is determined though analysis of grade heterogeneity within the orebody (greater heterogeneity represents more opportunity to add value to a project) at the scale of the intended sorting unit size."

Introduction Throughout the Great Plains region (the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta), numerous clay deposits of widely varying composition and character are to be found. These may be classified into two general types: (1) surface clays, and (2) shales. The surface clays consist of a heterogeneous mantle of silts and clays interspersed with grave! and sand deposits, and may belong to any of the following groups: (1) lake clays: (2) river-terrace or flood-plain deposits; (3) delta deposits . In most cases, the water from which these deposits were ' laid down was derived from the melting ice of the continental glaciers. These surface clays, in general, possess certain characteristics in common, being all more or less calcareous, often silty, and showing a tendency to 'check' in air-drying. The shales found in this region are of Cretaceous and Tertiary age. These deposits have a wide extent, but there is frequently such a heavy covering of drift material that the clays are accessible chiefly along the walls of stream valleys, or along the escarpments of uplands.

China is the largest coal producer in the world. In 2012, the coal production in China is 3.65billion tonnes, accounting for approximately 49% of global coal production. The raw coal production in 2012 was 3.8% more than the year 2011. 56% of total raw coal has been washed. The increase in raw coal production also promotes technology to be developed and brings separation capacity become larger and larger in coal processing in China. At present, over 40 extra-large scale coal preparation plants (each plant has capacity of more than 10 Mtpa) are in operation in China, the largest one is 32.5 Mtpa. Heavy medium separation are widely used in new built coal preparation, the washing limit for thermal coal feed lower and lower, the equipment selection tends larger which brings the whole washing system simplified, the local equipment developed and manufactured are more and more used. By discussing designs of several typical thermal coal preparation plants and coking coal preparation plants in China, this thesis introduces the current design of China?s extra-large coal preparation plants, and sums up the prevailing design features and trends of extra-large coal preparation plants.

Carbonate-rich rocks occur at several localities within the Flin Flon volcanic sequence of the eastern Amisk Lake area. The rocks occur in two areas: as a group of small occurrences on islands within Amisk Lake and as two much larger linear belts running parallel to the regional structure east of Amisk Lake. Mineralogically, the rocks consist of talc and Ca-poor ankerite with occasional graphite. Segregation of these minerals and colour variation impart a well-defined planar fabric to the rocks and where the units are fairly continuous (e.g. Mosher Lake), their trend and attitude suggests a concordant relationship to the volcanics. Major and trace analysis of22 samples confirms the presence of two types, with one type being represented in each of the two areas. Most of the elements studied can be used to characterize the two groups, but three elements in particular give a clear separation: Mg, AI and Ni. Recalculation of the major element analyses, on a water and carbonate-f ree basis, indicates that one group (large concordant bodies with high MgO, high Ni and low AI20.J is altered ultrabasic material of peridotitic or dunitic composition. Because no relict igneous material is observed, and the contacts are apparently very sharp, it is possible that the hydration-carbonization process occurred simultaneously with intrusion, .in a closed system. The other group (small occurrences with relatively low MgO, low Ni and high AI203J represents alteration of basaltic rocks. AIthough some analyses suggest the introduction of calcium, as carbonate, along with the volatiles, the major oxides have remained remarkably stable during the alteration process(es).

INTRODUCTIONFalconbrirdge Nickel Mines Limited, incorporated in 1928 is a major product of nickel, copper,coba1t and other metals and minerals. The Canadian Nickel Division operating facilities in the Sudbury Area currently includes seven mines, two concentrators, and a smelter.For many years at all concentrators, improv0mcnts in metal recoveries have been continually under investigation. One area was to improve the flotation cell performance. This paper will deal with mechanical and operating modifications to the cells at the Strathcona and Falconhridge Ni-Cu sulphide concentrators, at the Sudbury Operations.One of the prime means to mineral beneficiation processing has been, and will continue to be, the basic froth flotation cell. The efficient operation of a flotation cell is the key to satisfactory metal selectivity and recovery. The essence of good design is simplicity. Changes to cell design can contribute to a significant improvement in metal recovery.Over the past 10 years, modifications to the flotation cells have contributed to an improvement of some 3-4” in mineral recovery. The In order to mine safely with reasonable cost, it is necessary to research the fracture characters of backfill and its matches with rock mass. Four kinds backfill with cement-tailing ratio of 0.250, 0.125, 0.100 and 0.083 respectively were tested, and basing on stress-strain curves tested, the deformation characters and fracture laws as well as the damage constitutive equations investigated with damage mechanics whose calculating results are coincided with experiment results well were proposed. The results of damage analysis show that there have different damage characters in different backfill, e. g. the lower the ratio of cement to tailings the lower the damage values when stresses reach to peak value; the lower the content of cement the more rapid in damage and the more abrupt in breakage process. In addition, using catastrophe theory, an energy model was proposed for backfill and rock mass acted each other in mechanics, and the unstable condition of the system was obtained. Research results show that the higher is the stiffness of rock mass the more stable the system, and the lower is the ratio of cement to tailings, the more unstable the system will be. Further more, according to the catastrophe model proposed, the reasonable matches between backfill and rock mass were researched, and a calculation formula that designs reasonable strength of backfill during mining was put forward. It has been proved by practice that the model and theory researched in this paper can guide filling design in mining. "As real estate for new development in urban settings becomes scarce, commercial high rises are being constructed above open passenger rail tracks and vehicular roadways. Rail and roadway overbuilds are treated as tunnels requiring emergency ventilation systems for train or automobile and truck fires. The value of floor space in residential and office towers poses challenges to engineers responsible for designing fan rooms and shafts for tunnel ventilation systems within the towers. This paper describes a case study of the unique incorporation of tunnel ventilation fan plants in the overbuild structure of a passenger railyard and an adjacent roadway.INTRODUCTIONTunnel ventilation systems are required for passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels by the NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems, and the NFPA 502 Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways requires tunnel ventilation systems for vehicular (road) tunnels. Passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels are typically ventilated with a series of shafts placed longitudinally along the tunnels to provide piston relief for normal train operations and emergency ventilation of train fires utilizing reversible axial flow fans. The shafts are incorporated in dedicated ventilation buildings that house the tunnel ventilation fans and starters, switchgear to power the fans and other equipment and systems in the building, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control fan operation with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software, and HVAC fans and ductwork to ventilate the spaces in the building. These ventilation buildings may also provide access to the tunnels below with ingress/egress stairs for use by first responders and firefighters entering the tunnels and train or transit system passengers exiting the tunnels in an emergency. Introduction A shaft sinking operation carried out at the Viking Yellowknife mine in the spring of 1947 presents certain features, especially as regards speed of sinking and low cost, that may be of interest to Institute members, and especially to those who are not familiar with conditions and costs in the Northwest Territories. After collaring, the inclined, two-compartment shaft was sunk 130 feet by four miners in twenty-eight days at a direct cost of only $53.19 per foot. All things considered, this is a remarkable performance, even if it does not actually establish a record. The property is at Morris lake, some forty-five miles north of Yellowknife. Formerly owned by Athona Mines (1937), Limited, it was acquired by the then newly incorporated Viking Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited, in 1947. Surface work and diamond drilling in 1946 disclosed a number of veins and masses of quartz in a sill of diorite which lies conformably within sedimentary rocks. The sill strikes N.30°E. and dips at 70° to 85° southeast, and has a mean width of 40 feet over its explored length of 3,000 feet . Both the quartz and the diorite carry gold and are mineralized with pyrrhotite and lesser amounts of galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and arsenopyrite. Of thirty-five holes drilled in the mineralized zone, the core from twenty showed visible gold. Sampling of drill cores indicated several ore shoots in the north and central parts of the sill. Assays, however, were somewhat erratic, possibly due to the fairly widespread presence of visible gold, and it was decided that the deposit could best be explored by underground sampling. Accordingly, late in 1946, plans were laid for the sinking of a shaft.
