If it were necessary to preface a discussion of the mineral position of the Empire by justifying one's interest in that subject, there are two points that at once suggest themselves by way of vindication. Tremendous Growth of MINERAL Consumption The first of these points has to do with the general question of the world's mineral consumption. Most thinking persons appreciate in a more or less vague way the vital rôle that has been, and is being, played by mineral products in building up the material side of our modern civilization. But, apart from that casual and almost subconscious appreciation, very few have any precise knowledge of the extent to which the growth and the operation of our vast present-day industrial structure has been made possible by, and only by, a tremendous increase in the consumption of mineral products of all kinds. The increasing use of minerals confronts us today at almost every turn. It does not matter in what direction we look-at the expansion and the change in transportation facilities, in the air as well as on land and on sea; at the increasing mechanization, not only in factory and mill but even in our domestic life; or at the constantly widening use of machinery for all phases of farm production-everywhere we meet the same phenomena of rapidly growing uses of equipment produced mainly from minerals. Without resorting to any tiresome statistics, a few figures may suffice to indicate with what enormous strides the world's mineral consumption has been advancing. The figures for recent years may be open to objection on the plea that, ever since the outbreak of the world war, conditions have hardly been sufficiently normal to give us trustworthy data-we have been living under extremes either of depression or of abnormal stimulation. During the last decade before the war, however, from 1903 to 1913, the world was moving along in a quietly prosperous manner; and we have figures, or at least reasonably reliable estimates, as to the growth in mineral consumption during that decade.

Since the 1.940's, the bulk of the ore production from the Sullivan Mine has come from pillars. These pillars, located from 100 to 2000 feet below surface, have been subjected to considerable ground pressure. Mining techniques were adopted to minimize the problems of deteriorating ground conditions. These techniques included an orderly sequential blasting of pillars along a retreat front, stage blasting of tall pillars in horizontal slices and utilization of broken pillars as "buffers". The latter two techniques involved leaving substantial tonnages of broken ore in place for as long as 4 years. Rapid oxidation of metal sulphides, with attendant heat and noxious gas generation, had occurred in a few very localized areas of the mine associated with a major water course. However, in a very short period starting in 1972, sulphide fires spread to several of the large blocks of broken ore that had been left inactive for lengthy periods. There proved to be no feasible method of extinguishing these fires, except by complete removal of the burning ore. The attendant problems of handling large tonnages of burning ore have had considerable negative impact on the mine operation. The chemical reactions involved in these sulphide fires have been studied by the mine staff to determine the conditions necessary for' initiation and propagation of the tires. Techniques to safely and efficiently handle hot ore have been implemented and refined. Lastly, and most important, mining methods at the Sullivan Mine have been revised to ensure that additional fires do not occur.

This paper deals with the large iron ore concentrating plant owned by the Iron Ore Company of Canada. The plant is part of the Carol Project, which is being developed in the Wabush area of western Labrador. The mining and milling operations were officially opened in July of this year. The handling of fine material has always been considered a serious operational problem. The crushing, grinding and sizing of 50,000 tons of iron ore per day, in a dry state, could present sizeable problems in maintenance and orderliness. The operation, as a whole, embraces many recent developments in the iron ore industry. Mining operations include the latest techniques of jet piercing and blasting. Primary crushing involves a single crusher, which handles the complete production. Grinding of the ore includes the latest concepts of dry autogenous grinding in air-swept mills. The actual concentration of the ore is per-formed, in the wet state, by the use of spiral concentrators, with provision for possible flotation or magnetic separation, if required. The upgraded concentrates are either stored or pelletized, prior to shipment by rail to Seven Islands.

"ECSTALL MINING has installed in their plants the most modern equipment in the mining industry. At the minesite, digital blocked frequency controls are used to monitor all crushers, conveyors, ventilation equipment and pumps from underground. Distant pumping stations are monitored and controlled by radio. Modern friction skip and cage hoisting systems have been installed with static power supply designed for automatic operation. Rotary-type compressors of recent design are in service in place of the conventional reciprocating-type units. At the concentrator, the 800- and 1500-hp synchronous motors driving the grinding mills have static field excitation and pneumatic clutches, still meeting modern-day concepts, having been• installed in 1966. The maintenance work load has increased annually for the past eight years. The modern plant, with all the present-day sophistication, must have a welltrained and well-organized force of skilled workers, and a maintenance system which will supply realistic facts and guidelines. This presentation will review the relative location of plants, utilities, maintenance and services, plant maintenance control and mechanical control. It is the hope that enough information will be presented to weigh the size of the job and how the resources are utilized for controlled maintenance."

"The relative-value (R-value), discrimination-factor (D-factor), and vector-ratio (V-ratio) method (RDVM) provides a geological knowledge-based statistical and geological-genetic interpretation scheme for geochemical data that enhances discovery in geochemical exploration. The practical advantage of RDVM is that it synthesizes geochemical features geologically related to ore-deposit discovery in three steps: reclassifying element concentrations using log-probability plots into R-values; calculating geologically defined D-factors from R-values; and determining V-ratios. D-factors are the sum of R-values, divided by the number of R-values summed. Based on the analyses selected, D-factors mimic rock or mineral deposit signatures. V-ratios refine interpretations of rock type and vector to orebody locations.RÉSUMÉ La méthode de la valeur relative (valeur R), du facteur de discrimination (facteur D) et du rapport de vecteurs (rapport V) (RDVM), fournit un schéma d’interprétation des données géochimiques basé sur les statistiques et les connaissances géologiques et la génétique géologique; ce schéma contribue aux découvertes en exploration géochimique. "The primary purpose of conducting aeromagnetic surveys in mineral areas, and interpreting the data thus obtained, is to aid in the extrapolation of the geology from known to unknown areas-both in a horizontal and vertical direction. This paper describes one of the steps in the process of interpretation which has, in the past, been neglected-that of mathematically or quantitatively treating the data in two-dimensional map form. For this, several techniques are available.These techniques determine the downward and up-ward continuation fields, the second vertical derivatives and the fields reduced to the pole from the total magnetic field data. Second vertical derivatives and downward continuation fields increase the resolution and sharpness in the observed magnetic anomalies and tend to outline the surface traces of causative bodies with a reasonable amount of success in most cases. The 'reduction to the pole' is a mathematical process of calculating the field at the north pole from the observed field so that the un-desirable effects of the dip and declination of the earth's field and of rock magnetization are eliminated.New and accurate means of carrying out these calculations have been developed by the Geological Survey of Canada. In this paper are also presented the results of a method for obtaining the symbol and numerical map of the processed data with the help of the printer associated with the computer. The tedious work of digitizing magnetic field values in a map can be speeded up by the use of a semi-automatic coordinatograph, with the aid of which field values can be accurately transferred to punched cards."

"Developing a gold deposit of this magnitude in the Amazonian jungle of Guyana posed many challenges. This paper describes not only the process & logistical challenges arising from the remote mine site location in a tropical environment with a local industry unaccustomed to recent large scale gold mining operations, but also the innovative technical solutions employed to address the unique ore body characteristics. The best examples of this approach were dealing with the initial high clay content saprolite ore from the development phase and primary mining pits whilst ensuring that the design also implemented the right method to deal with the future fresh rock in an environmentally sensitive habitat. In order to do this separate individual crushing flowsheets were generated, focusing on the specific material handling equipment that would be suitable to handle these various types of material and ensure high recoveries were maintained.INTRODUCTIONAurora gold mine is located in forested region of Guyana, 170 km west of capital Georgetown, and 130 km West North-West of Bartica, a settlement at the junction of the Essequibo and Cuyuni Rivers.The Aurora gold project (Aurora) is a 5,000 tonne per day open-pit/underground operation, which will produce a total of 3.29 million oz. gold – averaging 194,000 oz. per year – over an initial 17 year mine life. At the final investment decision in 2014 Aurora had a total resource of 6.54 million ounces in the measured and indicated categories (62.83 million tonnes at 3.24 g/t Au) as well as additional 1.82 million ounces in the inferred category (16.93 million tonnes at 3.34 g/t Au)."

"In 1980, J.S. Redpath Limited were retained by Dickenson Mines Limited to increase hoisting capacity from 700 to 1000 tons per day. The hoisting capacity of the present skip-over-cage system could not be increased significantly through design modifications. The other constraint was a minimum of disruption to the current production. The Dickenson shaft was a three-compartment shaft from surface to the 8th level and four compartments before the 8th to the 23rd level. The solution to the problem was to remove the services from the shaft man-way compartment from the 8th level to surf ace by drilling a borehole close to the shaft and rerouting those services through the borehole to the 8th level. A service compartment would then be available from surf ace to the 23rd level.By providing a service hoist in this compartment, the skip hoist would then be free to produce the 1000-tons/day required production. This paper will describe the search for the required hoist and the friction hoist selected for the project, and trace the design modifications required to modify the hoist to suit the Dickenson application and satisfy the Department of Labour safety requirements.The paper has been co-authored by J.S. Redpath Limited and C.L. Tiley Associates, who participated in the design changes and eventual commissioning of the hoist.IntroductionIn the earl y part of 1980, J.S. Redpath Limited conducted an engineering study on the Dickenson Mines Limited No. 1 Shaft materials handling system. The object of the engineering study was to investigate the possibility of increasing the tonnage hoisted from the No. 1 Shaft complex by adding a service cage compartment and service hoist. Measured detonation pressures of "prills and oil" (94/6 ammonium nitrate/fuel oil) and three of the new "slurry" blasting agents are presented and compared with computed, ideal detonation pressures and with detonation pressures expected from the measured detonation velocities. Results seem to show that the peak pressure in the detonation wave in these cases is the Chapman-Jouguet pressure and that no "spike" exists in these detonation waves. The absence of the Zeldovich-von Neumann "spike" is noteworthy in view of the very long reaction zone lengths of these mixtures. The measured detonation pressure of one of the slurry blasting agents (DBA-3") under steel confinement ( 172 kilobars) is shown to be considerably greater than the ideal detonation pressure of 75 per cent gelatin dynamite (p. = 135 kilobars) despite the fact that the detonation was still somewhat non-ideal in "DBA-3," its computed ideal detonation pressure being 180 kb. The popular 94/b AN /FO blasting agent exhibited a detonation pressure of only 13.5 kb in 5" paper tubes, but 37.5 kb in 5"• steel pipe compared with a computed ideal pressure of 40 kb.

The enterprise wide optimization (EWO) of steelmaking and manufacturing is a multi-level, hierarchical problem which spans higher level corporate planning and scheduling through to the lower level operations of processes that produce and manufacture steel. External and internal system dynamics combined with process unit co-ordination create complex changing circumstances for the enterprise. This paper presents a scoping study as a prelude to enterprise wide considerations at an integrated steelworks to help inform the choice of appropriate model types and optimization techniques. The hierarchical, multi-level structure of the enterprise and the important spatial-temporal scales to consider are defined. Insights into the system were gained by analyzing a large set of dynamic operational data. Over two years of data were subject to both univariate and multivariate analysis with the intent of understanding the complex interrelations of energy flows on site, the inherent system dynamics of the energy network, system operational modes, aspects of planning and scheduling and the coordination between major processing units. This analysis was further used to evaluate the performance of the system in regards to energy utilization and understand the potential economic benefits derived from improved operational decisions.

THE HOISTING PLANT at the Stobie section of the FroodStobie mine is a two-shaft installation designed to handle a daily production of 18,000 tons of ore at depth. The two vertical shafts are within 100 feet of -each other, an arrangement made to provide the needed capacity and to give flexibility of operation (Figure 1). No. 7 shaft, used for handling men and supplies as well as for hoisting ore, has been sunk to the 3000 level and is served by a manhoist handling two cages and an orehoist with two 14-ton capacity Kimberley skips. No. 8 shaft, so far completed to a depth of 1,900 feet, handles only ore. The hoist is semiautomatic with push-button control and the skips are 15-ton capacity bottom-dump. The ore-loading pocket for first stage hoisting at both shafts is 120 feet below 1,600 lev-el and additional pockets are planned, as the shafts are deepened, at 800 foot intervals down to 4,000 feet.

A GREAT deal of work has been done at Britannia during the past three years in improving and standardizing rounds for development headings, and the results obtained have been very gratifying. The round which has recently been adopted as a standard for all drifts and cross-cuts has, in some instances, doubled the average length of break formerly obtained. It has also increased the footage of advance per labour shift and reduced explosives' consumption. At the present time, with a shortage of skilled labour, more control is necessar7 in directing the drilling of rounds. The use of a standard round has been o great assistance to the foremen and shiftbosses. NATURE OF GROUND Most of the ground encountered consists of a moderately silicified chlorite schist, known locally as G.M.S (green-mottled schist). It cannot be termed hard ground, because a three and one-half inch Leyner will drill at an average rate of twelve inches per minute. Due to the abrasive nature of the ground, the gauge of the steel wears rapidly and in most cases one set of steel is needed for each hole. The ground is not 'free breaking and holes must be spaced correctly to obtain a maximum break. DEVELOPMENT OF STANDARD ROUND FOR THREE-SHIFT OPERATION Late in 1940, a development programme was started involving 7,000 feet of drifting, 6 ft. By 7 1/2 ft. In cross-section, in two headings. Plans were drawn up to advance the headings on three shifts. Equipment used in the headings was as follows: D.A.35 Leyner?machines, Eimco Model 12B mucking machines, nine one-ton end-dump cars, one Mancha Little Trammer on the longest heading, 20-pound rail, 4-in. 15 compressed-air line, 15-in. Fan pipe connected to 5 h. P. Coppus fan. Diamond-drill cross-cuts, 16 feet in length, were cut every 250 feet. Switches were installed at these cross-cuts and they served as passing points for the cars. One siding seventy feet in length was cut in each heading at approximately the half-way point. The cycle of operations planned was to muck out, drill, and blast each shift. Previous performance in this type of ground indicated that a daily advance of 12 feet to 14 feet might be made. However, if a better type of round could be developed, an increased daily advance would be possible. A study of the time available for each operation in a net working shift of six and one-half hours indicated that the maximum depth of round that could be mucked, drilled, and blasted each shift would be six and one-half feet. When this maximum depth was decided upon, the next problem was to develop a satisfactory round. Due to ventilation difficulties and to the short net working shift, the whole round had to be blasted at one time. In other words, no blasting of the cut-holes could be done.

"Electrodeposited nanomaterials are increasingly implemented in advanced industrial applications in the aerospace, automotive, defence, electronic and energy sectors due to their outstanding physical, chemical and mechanical properties, including increased strength and wear resistance, and superb magnetic properties. As with the development of any class of new materials, the corrosion behaviour of these electrodeposits requires considerable attention. This presentation reviews major developments in the understanding of the corrosion behaviour of nanocrystalline metals, alloys and metal-matrix composites over the last 20 years, with emphasis on how their intrinsically high density of intercrystalline defects does not compromise their corrosion resistance as initially expected.INTRODUCTIONOver the past 20 years there have been considerable advances in the understanding of the corrosion behaviour of nanocrystalline metals, alloys and metal-matrix composites. In this paper, the corrosion properties of nanocrystalline nickel, cobalt, zinc, and copper and some of their alloys are reviewed with emphasis on how a reduction in grain size affects their corrosion behaviour in different environments.It is possible to synthesize nanocrystalline material with microstructural refinement down to the range of 1 to 100 nm using a large number of processing methods. There are five basic synthesis methods that can be used to classify the different techniques: vapor-phase processing, liquid-phase processing, solid-phase processing, chemical synthesis, and electrochemical synthesis. Depending on the synthesis method, different microstructures (equiaxed, textured), shapes, and forms (films, particles, bulk material) may be produced. In addition, other factors may be introduced (eg. residual porosity or amorphous phases), aside from microstructural refinement, which can contribute to the observed properties (Erb, 2010). In order to interpret and categorize the resulting microstructures, a dimensional structure modulation scheme was introduced by Siegel (1996) in which zero-dimensional nanomaterials refer to individual particles, clusters, etc. One-dimensionality results from a layered (less than 100 nm thick) structure. Two-dimensional nanomaterials are thin, layered structures containing grains (less than 100 nm) within each layer. Finally, three-dimensional nanomaterials are bulk structures with an average grain size less than 100 nm."

This paper reviews the circumstances that led to the development and construction of a commercial-scale vertical shaft carbonizer at Conmore, Alberta. This form coking process may be regarded as having potential application in other areas. Coal pelletizing offers a promising method of decreasing coal agglomeration costs under certain circumstances. Pellets can be rolled easily from -35-mesh coal, provided that a minimum of -200-mesh coal is present. Bentonite was found to be the best binder and was most effective when added in amounts of about 2 per cent. The water content of the coal pellets was observed to vary from 18 to 23 per cent. As a by-product of this investigation, it seems possible that fine coal could be converted into stoker feed by this process. A short investigation of the effect of heating rate on the carbonization of pellets was conducted. Fluidized low-temperature carbonization of coal, a recent development, offers a possibility of reducing fuel costs of coal-burning electric ?generating plants. The Research Council of Alberta have built a pilot plant and are conducting a programme to -develop a carbomzation plant for Alberta sub-bituminous coals which will produce char suitable for use as a .boiler fuel, and tar of a potentially high value as a ?chemical raw material. The economies of the process as a whole, and the value of the tar, have yet to be assessed.

"TEXADA Island is situated in the Strait of Georgia, about 100 miles northwest of Vancouver. The property of Texada Mines Ltd. lies on the southwest coast of the northern end of the Island. A part of the ""Sunshine Coast,"" the climate is moderate, with about 30 inches of rain during winter months and relatively dry summers. Texada has been shipping high-grade magnetite concentrate continuously since 1952 to Japanese ore buyers. In 1959, a 3,000-foot tunnel was driven just above sea level to explore the possible downward extension of known orebodies then being mined by open pit. In January of 1961, because the open-pit operations had a limited life, C. C. Huston and Associates were brought in as mining consultants to do a feasibility study on the possibility of going underground for production. This study was completed in March, 1961. With the completion of the report, the Company went to Japan seeking a ,long-term contract to justify the capital outlay necessary for setting up an underground operation. Concurrently, underground diamond drilling revealed more ore, and the Company planned some modifications to the concentrator for increasing the copper recovery. By November, 1961, a ten-year contract was signed with Japanese ore buyers for the sale of 450,-000 long tons of concentrates beginning in October, 1963. Since that time, the Company has built its own 65 000-ton ore carrier and an additional three-year contract has been negotiated, with an annual tonnage increase of from 450,000 to 550,000 tons."

"The Freightrain kimberlite is located on the Brodeur Peninsula, Baffin Island, Nunavut. Twin Mining is exploring the pipe and adjacent land (79 claims/655 km2) using a combination of airborne geophysics, soil sampling, diamond drilling, trenching and bulk sample processing. The pipe originally was discovered by Cominco Limited in 1975, re-evaluated in 1993 by Lumina Investment Corporation, when it was staked as the Zulu pipe, and subsequently covered by three claims in 1998 by Helix Resources who called it Freightrain.The Freightrain pipe coincides with a strong, ovoid-shaped aeromagnetic anomaly. It is the only surface exposure of kimberlite within a 30 km long linear trend of fourteen aeromagnetic anomalies that are up to 600 m in diameter.The pipe is exposed in the crater facies, near the transition into diatreme facies as indicated by the occurrence of pyroclastic kimberlite characterized by abundant olivine macrocrysts, juvenile lapilli and kimberlite autoliths set in a serpentine-calcite matrix. Olivine, Cr-pyrope garnet and chromite are the most abundant macrocrysts; clinopyroxene, ilmenite and phlogopite mica occur in minor to trace amounts. Garnet and chromite harzburgite, garnet lherzolite, garnet-spinel lherzolite and rare eclogite dominate the xenolith population.Garnet and chromite mineral chemistry indicate encouraging diamond prospectivity and that potentially diamondiferous garnet and chromite harzburgite were the principal sources of diamond in the mantle at the time of kimberlite eruption.Single clinopyroxene grains define an ~42 mW/m2 sub-continental geotherm that is rooted in the diamond stability field. This compares to a slightly hotter geotherm (~48 mW/m2) for adjacent Somerset Island kimberlites with an origin in the graphite stability field. This data accords with the general lack of sub-calcic Cr-pyrope garnet, diamond inclusion chromite and diamond in Somerset Island kimberlites."

A Bayesian decision model of minimun risk, based on the probability and costs of mine discoveries and non-economic projects, is presented for massive sulphide exploration in the Canadian Shield. The sample used for the model is composed of data relating to forty mines, sixty non-economic sulphide occurrences, and sixty occurrences of graphitic and pyritic material. These economic and barren samples consist of drill-tested occurrences which were, in varying degree, characterized by conductivity anomalies. Given the large size, the reliability and the homogeneity of the data base available for massive sulphide exploration, it is shown that certain statistical models can and should be utilized as a tool for decision-making by explorationists. Given this data base, information theory tells us that only those signals that are independent of one another will transmit information with minimum error. An ensemble of six significant multilevel signals, markedly independent of one another and consisting of numeric and geometric form descriptions derived from Bouguer anomaly, aeromagnetic and physiographic maps, were identified and evaluated by case studies. The use of these signals as input in a simple statistical procedure, or in a carefully planned and experienced visual appreciation scheme, can be of significant aid in decisions concerning the choice of favourable areas or sectors to explore in detail. The method of discriminant analysis is theoretically and practically suited for the statistical modelling involved. By way of a simulation on our statistical model, the efficiency of the model and of the underlying criteria is determined for historic cases and, by inference, for its validity in future exploration. An approximate optimized solution is derived from the model which suggests that over 90% of the known ore could be found by screening, according to a model such as that herein described, and drilling only 30% of the targets (mostly barren) normally identified and tested in current and past exploration.
