Introduction The Kirkland Lake (Ontario) property of Wright-Hargreaves Mines, Limited, - consists of four claims. The two main shear zones or 'breaks' of the Kirkland Lake camp extend through three of these claims, for a distance of approximately 3,500 feet. These claims are on the northeast side of the original lake. The water in this section of the lake has now been replaced with mill tailings. The degree of success of any completed undertaking, especially in the mining industry, reflects the personnel involved. I state with pleasure that the successful deepening of No. 5 winze from 6,400 feet to 7,272 feet was largely due to the co-operation and skilled workmanship of Shaft Captain J. Myelde and his efficient 'leaders'. This winze was sunk at a time when it was most difficult to obtain experienced shaftmen, with the result that the crews did not wholly consist of experienced men (although their desire to learn shaft sinking soon gave good results). This condition added greatly to the responsibilities and duties of those in charge, whose first consideration was for the safety of those engaged in the work, and I take great pride in recording that the entire sinking programme was completed without a lost-time accident. Location of Winze Due to the information obtained through deep diamond-drill holes collared below the 6,000-foot level being of sufficient importance to warrant further exploration, it was decided to deepen the existing No. 5 winze rather than sink another winze. This decision meant that the sinking must be co-ordinated with and proceed simultaneously with operations in the winze, where mining was being carried on between the 3,900-foot and 5,100-foot horizons, inclusive.

Although Canadian bentonite is competitive in quality for most uses, it has not been accepted for the pelletizing of iron ore concentrates. In 1962, Canada consumed about 10,000 tons of imported bentonite for this use. By the end of 1965, the planned domestic consumption for this purpose alone will probably be more than 100,000 tons a year, valued at about $3 million. Consequently, a challenge exists for the establishment of a Canadian source of high-quality bentonite for pelletizing. Such a bentonite would also be suitable for the two other major applications -well drilling and foundry use. Brief mention is made of such topics as the identification, 1noperties, occurrences, exploration, applications, technology and laboratory testing of this clay. In particular, the type of bentonite in demand, the geological horizons warranting exploration, and simple preliminary test methods are discussed.

The mineralogy of any ore body is a key factor in defining ore zones and predicting minerals/metals behaviour during processing. The determination of forms of gold, defined as the different chemical states in which gold is encountered in ore deposits, is critical. The most commonly known form is that of gold minerals and alloys, while other forms of gold have been collectively described in the literature as submicroscopic gold (i.e., less than 1 µm in diameter). Gold mining operations generally deal with very low-grade ores, in the order of a few g/t, in which gold displays complex mineralogy. These difficulties complicate the mineralogical studies and pose challenges for processing and recovering the gold. A comprehensive understanding of the chemical forms of gold is necessary to define gold mineralization and optimize gold metallurgy. SGS Canada Inc. has been using QEMSCANTM and a Tescan automated SEM that are automated mineralogical techniques that provide vast amounts of data for microscopic Au. The data in conjunction with other physical and chemical methods provide a comprehensive delineation of the ore composition and behaviour.

A concerted effort between Akan International Limited and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) has been initiated to develop a liquid-based slurrymaking process, dubbed SEED (Swirled Enthalpy Equilibration Device) for semi-solid forming. The technology is presently entering the industrial and commercial stages, and will be used by the first customers at the end of 2006. Semi-solid processing of aluminium alloys offers many advantages in fabricating economically near-net-shape parts of superior quality. The SEED process helps to overcome problems experienced with thixocasting and especially the high cost of feedstock. The SEED process involves two main steps: 1) heat extraction to achieve a desired liquid/solid mixture, and 2) drainage of an excess liquid to produce a self-supporting semi-solid slug that is formed under pressure. The heat transfer plays an important role (enthalpy equilibrium) during the manufacture of the semi-solid slurry and its analysis is briefly described. The semisolid material is obtained using different processing times and initial conditions. The impact on the solid fraction distribution and the morphological evolution of the microstructure is presented. The influence of the SEED processing parameters (slurry preparation) and the resulting mechanical properties for the alloy A356 are also reported.

This study investigated bio-liquefaction of lignite and its model compounds of thymol, bezioc acid and quinoline by a fungus, Hypocrea lixii AH. It analyzed, during bio-liquefaction, enzyme activity of oxidase, LiP, Lac, MnP and polyphenol oxidase, and degradation products by UV-Vis, FTIR, 13C NMR and GC-MS. The results showed that the bio-liquefaction percentage (by mass) of lignite was up to 44.86 %. The bio-liquefaction products of lignite were mainly aniline, amide, ether, carboxylic acid ketone and ester. The aromatic ring number was 1-3 with an aromatic carbon ratio of 0.328, which indicated rings opening, bonds breaking and oxidation reaction. By considering with the enzyme activity analysis results, it showed that LiP and Lac catalyzed reactions to open aromatic cycles and to break bonds; esterase to break ester bond; and peroxidase in oxidation reaction.

Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) is a promising thermal insulator for high temperature environments due to its thermal stability and chemical inertness. As was demonstrated with other technical ceramics (e.g., Alumina), addition of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) to a ceramic matrix may significantly enhance the mechanical properties of the composite ceramic. In this work, 8 mol% YSZ with 0.2, 0.5 and 1wt% CNTs composites were prepared via Spark Plasma Sintering process. The densification, Vicker’s microhardness, specific gravity and microstructure evolution of the composites were investigated. The results suggest that the addition of up to 1wt% CNTs to YSZ yielded optimal combination of the studied properties. At higher addition levels, the specific gravity decreased and clustering of CNTs occurred, leading to poor densification and a relative loss of performance.

"In beneficiation process, metal ions could adsorb onto clay mineral surfaces or interact with flotation chemicals, and then result in the flotation behavior changing of desired minerals. Al(III) is the dominating ion existing in the bauxite flotation system. In this research, the adsorption behaviors of Al(III) on two silicate clay minerals (including bentonite and kaolin) were investigated by means of UV-Vis spectra, zeta potential testing and scanning electron micrograph analysis. The adsorption experiment results show that the adsorption capacity of clays for Al(III) ions increases with the initial Al(III) concentration, contact time and solution pH. There are some different adsorption behaviours for two clays. Increasing the clay concentration decreases the adsorption capacity of bentonite, while increases first then decreases for kaolin. Higher temperature favours the adsorption of Al(III) on bentonite but goes against for kaolin. The adsorption capacities of bentonite and kaolin for Al(III) respectively reach 12.48 and 0.875 mg/g at initial solution pH 5. Zeta potential results show that the adsorption of Al(III) on two clays is characterized by electrostatic attraction mechanism.INTRODUCTIONIn beneficiation process, there is inevitably a wide variety of metal ions generated from mineral crushing, mineral dissolution and water chemistry conditions. Metal ions adsorb on the mineral surfaces or interact with the beneficiation agents, affecting the flotation efficiency of desired minerals (DiFeo et al., 2001; Parolis et al., 2008; Shackleton et al., 2012; Shengo et al., 2014). Therefore, it is necessary to have a detailed investigation on the adsorption behaviour of metal ions on clay minerals.Having good ion exchange capacity and negative surface charge, the clay minerals could take up various metal ions from the mineral-water system. Bentonite and kaolin are very common aluminosilicate clays in the mineral processing system. These two clays both hold a permanent negative charge, =X- on the basal surfaces, and a smaller variable charge, =SiOH on the mineral edges (Gu & Evans, 2008; (Gu et al., 2010). Adsorption experiments are usually used to study the adsorption affinity of metal ions for clay minerals (Sen & Bhattacharyya, 2012). The adsorption of Zn(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) onto natural bentonite showed that the adsorption amounts of metal ions increase with contact time, solution pH and metal ion concentration, but decreases with adsorbent concentration and system temperature (Sen & Gomez, 2011; Melichova & Hromada, 2013). Cr(III) adsorption on bentonite was significantly pH dependent. The adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order model and the equilibrium adsorption was consistent with Freundlich isotherm (Lollino et al., 2015). The adsorption behaviours of Pb(II), Cd(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) onto kaolin indicated that increasing pH favoured the adsorption of metal ions (Jiang et al., 2010). The adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) onto kaolin showed that an ion-exchange reaction occurred at pH<7.0 and inner-sphere surface complexes were prone to form at higher pH (Srivastava et al., 2005)."

"Installation of a 3.6 km long raw coal conveyor in the Balmer open pit was undertaken to improve over-all haulage efficiency. This paper covers the rationale behind this project, system design and construction aspects and initial operating experiences. The majority of the construction work was performed by our own personnel. Where feasible, used equipment was installed to reduce capital cost and facilitate a tight construction schedule.BackgroundWestar Mining Ltd&apos;s Balmer Mine is located in the British Columbia Rockies, just outside of the town of Sparwood in the southeastern corner of British Columbia. The open pit mine, which has been in operation since 1969, currently produces about 6 million clean tonnes of coal per year, mostly for the metallurgical coal export market. Run-of-mine coal tonnages total between 9 and 9.5 million annually and waste removal volumes exceed 30 million bank cubic metres.The mine is a truck/shovel operation; loading equipment includes nine electric shovels, five front-end loaders and a hydraulic backhoe. The truck fleet consists of 40 units of 154-tonne, 181-tonne and 315-tonne capacity. The newer 154-tonne trucks are used for coal haulage for which they have been equipped , with tailgates to maximize their coal carrying capacity."

"The study undertaken aims to investigate an ice stope heating and cooling system for its potential to be implemented in sub-arctic mines, as a low carbon alternative to conventional natural gas and refrigeration chiller systems. Its performance was simulated for a years’ worth of data, taking into consideration hourly temperature data. Results showed that to supply the required heating and cooling loads, the ice stope system had to supplement its heating with natural heating. The techno-economic performance of this system was compared to that of a conventional heating and cooling system in a mine, with the ice stope thermal storage system hawing the lowest annuitized cost and significantly lower carbon emissions.INTRODUCTIONConventional heating and cooling, in a mine is implemented using natural gas heaters and chiller refrigeration systems respectively. This results in a significant portion of energy consumption in underground mines attributable to ventilation (De Souza, 2015), including the conditioning of the air to ensure that temperatures do not exceed work comfort standards (ACGIH, 2011). Especially at depth where heat could become a significant issue. An ice stope thermal storage, using ice as the storage medium is being proposed as an alternative to provide the heating and cooling—with the ice creation resulting in heating and the ice melting providing the cooling required. A techno-economic investigation of the two systems is undertaken to identify the capital and operating costs for the two systems, and to assess the ice stope’s potential to be considered a low cost and carbon solution for heating and cooling of mines in sub-arctic climates.NATURAL STORAGE SYSTEM – CONCEPT DEVELOPMENTThe concept for the natural storage system is developed from the ice stope at Frood-Stobie Mine, ON, Canada (Stachulak, 1991). The ice stope was developed for mine air heating, with the heating occurring by spraying warm return service water onto the cold intake air—resulting in the air temperature increasing and ice being created in the stope. In summer this ice was melted by passing warm air on top of it, resulting in slight cooling of the air but no significant temperature difference which could allow effective cooling. A schematic of the Frood-Stobie Mine ice stope is provided in Figure 1."

"La Mine Doyon est une entreprise détenue à parts égales par Cambior Inc. et par Minerais Lac Ltée qui en est l'opérateur. Les statistiques de production au 1"" janvier 1990 indiquent que, depuis le début de son exploitation (1980), 10.3 Mt de minerai d'une teneur moyenne de 5,9 g Au/t ont été usinées. Les réserves sont estimées a 10,4 Mt à une teneur moyenne de 6,6 g Au/t jusqu' à une profondeur de-450m.Trois zones minéralisées sont présentement en exploitation. Ces zones sont caractérisées par la présence de veines de quartz-pyrite accompagnées localement de chalcopyrite. Les roches encaissantes sont les schistes a séricite (zone# 1), les roches volcaniclastiques de composition felsique (zone #2) et intermédiaire (zone #2, zone ouest) ainsi que les roches intrusives appartenant au pluton de Mooshla (zone ouest). Toutes ces roches ont subi un métamorphisme régional dont l'intensité correspond à la limite supérieure du facies schiste vert ( -425°C}.Les zones minéralisées sont situées à I' intérieur des zones de déformation et d'altération les plus intenses. L'étude des structures mineures nous indique que la région a subi plusieurs épisodes de déformation ductile a fragile qui sont antérieurs, contemporains et postérieurs al a minéralisation. L'analyse structurale indique également que la déformation majeure est associée à une importante phase de compression orientée N-S a NNE-SSW.L’ensemble des observations suggère que la minéralisation et I' altération associée sont de type épigénétique. La mise en place du minerai se serait effectuée à la fin de l'épisode principal de métamorphisme et de la déformation."

It details the cooperative efforts of personnel at Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) and Brunswick Mining & Smelting (BMS) during the technology transfer of the Mechanic&apos;s Stethoscope. It demonstrates how everyone worked toward a goal of developing a product that is accepted as a useful addition to the work environment.The Mechanic&apos;s Stethoscope is an underground vehicle diagnostic system consisting of computer hardware and software intended to assist mechanics in daily tasks. Its tools facilitate quick and easy access to any information required during the maintenance of an underground vehicle. Each tool presents vehicle condition data in a simplified manner. The additional information improves the mechanics understanding of the vehicle condition. The result is a healthier fleet of vehicles and faster diagnosis times.When introducing a computer based system into a traditionally non-computer oriented environment a concern is the acceptance of the system. This concern exists on many levels."

An applicable Eluex process was developed for acid in-situ leaching (ISL) uranium mine in Bayanwula. In this process, uranium was adsorbed with strong base anion resin from the pregnant solution, then the loaded resin was eluted by sulfuric acid. After D2EHPA extraction, the concentrated eluate was enriched, and the loaded organic phase was stripped by sodium carbonate. The yellow cake was obtained by sodium hydroxide precipitation at last. The uranium concentration in the loaded strip solution was 52.8 g/L. Parameters of the process were determined, and the impact of the Eluex process in underground leaching was also investigated. In industrial design, 95% of raffinate went back to elution and 5% back to in-situ leaching. No significant effect on uranium leaching or resin adsorption was found.

Electrical energy rep-resents one variable cost that may be better managed and utilized, providing the user with lower operating costs, improved productivity and better yields.The utility industry is also facing changes in the way it must do business. Utilities in North America are facing the prospect of deregulation that will eliminate the monopoly they have traditionally held. This will force them to strive for lower operating costs, to maintain a competitive position and to improve customer ser-vice so as to maintain their customer base.Ontario Hydro has been working with industry for several years. Many opportunities for cost savings have been identified involving energy efficiency, process improvements and the use of new electro technologies. One useful service that the utility can offer industry is to increase the awareness of potential opportunities suited to their operations. This paper will provide an overview of some of the projects that have been implemented and those that are presently being evaluated. An electronic data-base of electro technology applications that is under development will also be described."

Hydrogen generated through aluminum-assisted water split reaction is a novel, efficient and environmentally friendly method. It has been found previously that the passivation of aluminum can be prevented in neutral (pH=7) or near neutral pH conditions in water by grinding aluminum with a catalyst, such as A12O3, SiO2 or SiC. Recently, the best results have been obtained by using water-soluble inorganic salts (WIS), ground with aluminum. The massive, rapid corrosion reaction of the Al-WIS system which takes place in regular tap (or marine, or ground) water can be utilized to produce hydrogen by aluminum-assisted water split reaction, in-situ, on-demand. The reaction offers clean, low-cost, environmentally benign and entirely recyclable technology for on-board on-demand hydrogen generation. Besides pure gaseous hydrogen, only pure solid aluminum hydroxides AlOOH or Al(OH)3 are formed as the reaction products. The hydrogen yield and Al-WIS reaction efficiency are high. From 1 g of mechanically alloyed aluminum powder, up to 1.25 liters of hydrogen were generated, i.e. efficiency up to 92% was achieved. The amount of hydrogen and hydrogen generation rate depend on various reaction parameters. The effect of chemistry and concentration of additives, water temperature, powder particle size and milling conditions on the reaction kinetics will be presented and the possible process mechanism will be discussed.

THE gold deposits of the Pioneer and Bralorne mines, in the Bridge River district of British Columbia, are closely associated with a long, narrow intrusive body of extremely variable composition, outcropping on the northeast side of Cadwallader creek and lying almost entirely within the property boundaries of the two companies. Other masses of the same type of intrusive rock are found in the district, more or less along the line of the main axis of the Pioneer-Bralorne in trusive, and have associated with them variable amounts of gold-quartz mineralization (Figure 1). The ore deposits of the district have been the subject of investigation by officers of the Geological Survey of Canada at various times during the past 25 years, and articles on the geology and mines of the district have been published by various individuals in technical journals. The creep response of the AE44 magnesium alloy was studied by means of constant load creep tests carried out at 125 and 150°C, obtaining that at the latter temperature the minimum creep rate observed under an applied stress of 100 MPa was two orders of magnitude lower in the investigated alloy than in AM50. The minimum creep rate dependence on applied stress was described by a conventional power-law, e = Aon , where A was a temperature dependent parameter and n was the stress exponent, resulting in a n value close to 30, i.e. by far larger than those observed in commercial alloys with similar Al content. This large difference in creep response was attributed to the precipitation of rare earths (RE) intermetallic phases distributed in the grain boundary zone in form of an almost continuous network of dispersoids that were observed by means of scanning electron microscopy.

"Historically, alot of jarosite was found in the leaching residue when leaching indium from secondary zinc oxide materials. The reasons for the formation of indium bearing jarosite were theoretically analyzed. The influence of controlling the acidity and the addition of reagents on the indium leaching yield during secondary zinc oxide processing was investigated. In order to increase the leaching yield of indium, a measure of controlling the creation and destruction of jarosite was proposed. The production data shows that the leaching yield of indium was increased from 60 to 96%, and the content of indium in leaching residue simultaneously decreased from 900g/t to 100–200g/t when implementing such controlling measures.INTRODUCTIONIndium does not occur as independent minerals in the earth’s crust and is mainly associated with complex sulphide minerals. Specifically some sphalerites can contain as much as 900g/t of indium. Most indium is recovered from by-products of copper, lead or zinc metallurgy. Therefore, the research on the recovery of by-products in non-ferrous metallurgy is important(Sinclair et al, 2006). The main technologies used for this objective in China include: •,pre-neutralization-reduction-precipitation indium process(Yu et al, 2008), •,countercurrent oxidizing acid leaching process and sulphation roasting-water leaching process(Cao, 2005), •,oxygen pressure acid leaching of zinc concentrate-P204 extraction process(Yang et al, 2006), •,doubleacid leaching-solvent extraction process on lead dross from a reverbatory furnace flue dust(Liu, 2003),•,an acid leaching-solvent extraction process on smelting ash(Zhouet al, 2005). Although high pressure and extreme conditions can be used to improve extraction from high iron bearing indium residues(autoclave processing), mild extraction with lower cost and lower environmental impact are preferred.This paper describes both how the indium extraction using mild conditions in a secondary zinc circuit was quite low and, how through XRD and chemical analysis jarosite formation was found as the main cause. The paper then proceeds to discuss a method for improving the leaching yield and the application of this method in industrial practice."

?Demand-side measure" means a rate, measure, action or program undertaken to conserve energy or promote energy efficiency?? (BCUC, 1996) In actual economical environment, business sustainability requires high-efficiency technological processes. That is why the efficiency concept has to be present at all levels of industrial activities. Nowadays, some purchasing decisions are still driven predominately by the purchase price, in spite of the evidence that such price represents up to 5 % to 7 % of the total costs of ownership with full consequences of energy efficiency and the impact on total ownership costs. The paper presents essentials of converter types and basics of the Global Efficiency (GEff) Concept that has been promoted over the last few years in South African industries (Pitis et al., 2006/7). GEff concept is proven as a useful tool used on price-efficiency decisions. Theoretical and technical aspects of this concept were substantiated with case studies. First part presented in this paper will describe how GEff concept was used on price ? efficiency decisions when single input or direct converters and systems (considered as low value equipments) have been replaced. Besides the impact of energy savings and new innovative developments, the paper suggests general other benefits of: ? Technical and economical performance improvements and competitiveness of mining corporations to international standards; ? Defusing incipient energy crisis in the sector; ? Improving environmental conditions; ? Creating new job opportunities in mining sector. Proposed concept in this paper could be further developed as models of improving companies? corporate energy policies.

The design of hydrostatic liner for a deep potash mine shaft in Saskatchewan poses tremendous technological challenges. Technology has evolved to a point where one could consider a new innovative approach to hydrostatic liner design. But there is still a place for conventional technologies such as cast iron tubbings. As will be discussed in this paper, improvement to manufacturing process, installation procedures and even new materials can bring this technology to an excellent level of performance. With the spur of new projects in the potash industry of Saskatchewan, the authors worked in various shaft liner designs from the conceptual stage through to the construction phase. They were either directly leading the design work on some of these projects or acting as an external reviewer on others. Most of these shaft liner designs involved cast iron tubbing technology and ground freezing. The major challenge in sinking potash shafts in Saskatchewan is to go through a water-bearing ground formation under high pressure, known as the Blairmore or Manville fm. The only proven stabilizing technology for these formations is ground freezing. For a potash shaft, dry shaft conditions are highly desired, so a fully waterproof hydrostatic liner is required. All the existing potash mine shafts in Saskatchewan, except for two with composite steelconcrete lining, used the cast iron tubbing technology. Two new shaft tubbing liners have been constructed recently, one in the Athabasca Basin and one for a potash mine in Saskatchewan. When the authors began working on these new projects, what became quickly evident is that the technological knowhow for designing and constructing tubbing liners was no longer available within Canada and that the past construction methods used to sink tubbing lined shafts was obsolete. The tubbing liner for the shafts sunk in the sixties were designed either by German or British companies. In both of these countries only few tubbing lined shafts were sunk in last 40 years and the technology used in the sixties was not improved. There are only few countries where tubbing is routinely produced and installed: China, Russia, Ukraine and Poland. Out of these countries Poland is the one where this technology is the most advanced. The authors, working in close collaboration with engineers from Poland, attempted to rebuild this knowledge for the mining industry in Canada. This process involved thorough analysis of old technical reports, literature review and study of current polish design and construction practices as well as site visits of existing shafts. Through actual construction experience, some lessons were learned as well as ideas for improvements. In this paper, the authors will present a succinct review of design and procurement process.
