The classical view of island arc geology is that of a plutonic intrusive/volcanic extrusive complex, derived from the products of oceanic lithosphere subdu.ction and constructed on an over-riding plate of oceanic origin. Such an arc is typically backed by a marginal basin, formed by seafloor spreading of a more or less conventional kind. Various studies undertaken over the last decade have modified this picture and provided a new tectonic framework within which to explore for resources. Formation of Marginal Basins During the 1970s, seafloor spreading magnetic anomalies were identified in various marginal basins in the SW Pacific. In one of these, the South Fiji Basin, there was clear evidence of a ridge-ridge-ridge triple junction, although no kinematic relationship to the major plate boundaries was determined. Palaeomagnetic studies conducted in Vanuatu and Fiji, and in the Bismarck Archipelago of PNG provided evidence of large scale arc rotations relative to major plates. This indicated a general pattern of marginal basin formation by ridge-ridge-ridge triple junction growth together with island arc growth by trench-ridge-trench triple junction evolution. Formation of Primitive Island Arcs The triple junction growth model strongly suggests that at least a significant amount of arc evolution occurs by the initiation of subduction at a spreading ridge. This has predictive implications for the nature of island arc basement.

In the human body, the balance between heat production and heat loss is continuously being disturbed, either by changes in metabolic rate (work being the most influential) or by changes in the external environment (heat stress), which alters heat loss. These changes in body temperature can adversely affect the function of body systems and organs. As a result, heat production or heat loss processes are triggered in order to restore normal body temperature (36 - 37¦C). If the heat generating systems of the body are excessive or the environment hostile then the capacity of the body to maintain thermal homeostasis is exceeded and can lead to a serious threat to health, or even death. This health deficit can severely affect an individualÆs capacity to work optimally; the end result is both poor productivity and health. Strategies to minimise or eliminate this effort will benefit both the health of workers and the productivity of companies. The principal strategies to reduce the effects of the environment on workers are: engineering interventions: to improve environmental conditions and reduce heat stress; and a comprehensive working in heat protocol: with provisions to identify risk situations and procedures to be adopted in relation to these. The above points will be discussed in detail with practical and simple strategies proposed to combat the deleterious effects of heat in mining.

A wide variety of process streams are sampled for grade control in the mining industry. However, in many instances the overall precision of the resultant analyses is inadequate for the intended purpose, ie grade control and optimisation of resource utilisation. Consequently, special attention needs to be given to the sampling, sample preparation and analysis procedures in place to ensure that meaningful grade control decisions can be made based on the analyses generated. For example, it is virtually impossible to control a process to within, say, ¦0.2 per cent if the overall precision of the analyses is no better than 0.5 per cent. Hence, precision targets appropriate for the task need to be established and the overall precision achieved in practice monitored and controlled on an ongoing basis.

There are a number of points on which I would like further information, but I will confine my remarks to a relatively small saving which is of particular interest in view of another paper to be presented this afternoon.Mention is made of a 50 per cent reduction in the amount of zinc used in the precipitation of gold slime from the pregnant solution. Would Mr. Harris enlarge on the methods by which they obtained this reduction; and could he give an actual figure of zinc consumption either by ton of ore treated or per ounce of bullion recovered.AuthorsWe consider the reduction of zinc is due to improved clarification of the pregnant solutions. The sand clarifiers used prior to the installation of the 50 ft. -thickener were not satisfactory due mainly to the blending of the hessian and matting under the sand. Under these conditions the leaf clarifiers were fed with overflow solution from the clarifiers and were overloaded in consequence. The addition of Calgon has also been beneficial.The present consumption of zinc per ton of solution treated is 088 lb. per ton.A. L. A significant resource of uranium has been discovered within a buried palaeochannel located in the south western corner of the Officer Basin of Western Australia by PNC Exploration (Australia) Pty. Ltd. The mineral- isation is redox controlled and is hosted by Eocene organic rich paludal sediments. Prob- able insitu reserves are 13,000 t of contained uranium with an average ore grade of 0.12% at a cutoff grade of 0.03% U. The Mulga Rock palaeochannel has been traced for at least 100 km beneath the Quaternary surficial cover. The main channel is horseshoe shaped with the channel arms vary- ing from 5 to 15 km in width. The western arm connects to the Lake Raeside-Ponton Creek drainage system, whilst the eastern arm'is open to the south. The headwaters of the palaeo- channel are thought to have been the Lake Minigwal drainage system, prior to its capture by the Lake Rason system. Differential.erosion of the basement rocks during the Late Cretac- eous to Early Tertiary strongly influenced channel shape and resulted in the main channel being confined to a Permian,mudstone filled valley. Upwards of 100 m of fluviatile sediments accumulated within the palaeovalley during a period of subsidence in the Early Tertiary. Three broad stratigraphic units have been re- cognised within the channel: 1. An upper unit of fluviatile sands with interbedded lacustrine sediments, which have subsequently been wholly oxidised and variably silicified and ferruginised. 2. A middle unit of lacustrine to paludal sediments, which host the main mineral- isation. 3. A basal unit of fluviatile gravels and sand. The presence of excellently preserved Nothofagidites in organic rich paludal sediments from the middle unit, suggest that unit was laid down in a non-marine, fluviatile, humid environ- ment during the Middle Eocene.

Titanium tetrachloride may be reduced to trichloride with hydrogen on a hot tungsten filament and other hot: surfaces. The effect of temperature, time and size of t.he filament on the rate of reaction has been studied. A laboratory unit for preparing a few pounds of trichloride at a time is described. The yield of trichloride is 2·2 - 2·4 gm/sq. cm. of hot surface/hour at 1,000°C. and the energy requirement 3'5-4 kWh/pound of trichloride produced.'INTRODUCTIONThe lower chlorides of titanium (titanium tri- and dichlorides) are amenable to electrolysis, being electrovalent in nature. Furthermore, relative to other oxygen-free titanium salts, they are easy to prepare in a pure state and their use has been investigated to prepare titanium. In Finland fogging in mine ramps is a common problem. Fog forms when warm and humid exhaust air moves upwards the ramp, where the skin temperature of surrounding wallrock decreases to about 10¦C. Changes in fog thickness and lengths of fog-filled parts of the ramp depend at least on climatic conditions outside, diesel equipment usage in the mine, and the length of working sequence at a time. In this study fogging problems in three different mines, namely Orivesi mine, Louhi mine and PyhSsalmi mine, with different ore types, different layouts, and different depths are presented and compared. All these mines use diesel equipment and the ramp is used as an exhaust air route. In two of these mines the ramp is used as a haulage road and in the other for supply and repairing, checking, and surveying purposes. Measurements of humidity, temperature, air velocity, and dust content were performed in these mines. The measurement results, as well as field observations are presented, compared, and discussed. The results show that fog is observed in areas with high relative humidity values when air temperature and dew point temperature are less than 3¦C apart from each other. Air velocity values were high in many areas. In addition, measured particle concentration values were mainly high in areas, where fog was observed. A short literature review of recent fog formation studies is also presented. It demonstrates the complicacy of the fog formation process. Similarities and differences concerning fog problems in the ramps are found and presented. As already a lot of new information is gained, the continuation of research is considered plausible to find more economical ways of solving and preventing this problem in the future.

Rehabilitation of tailings impoundments is one of the most challenging aspects in mine closure, as not only does the potential for producing leachate pose a challenge to the rehabilitation designer, but also other aspects such as stability and settlement must be considered. The water balance of a tailings impoundment is unique in the sense that it usually hosts a pond that in turn causes a phreatic surface in the impoundment. The position of the phreatic surface defines the saturated and unsaturated zones in the impoundment, which of course varies spatially and temporally. Predictive modelling for this hydrologic system becomes difficult, as numerical models capable of analysing the combined saturated/unsaturated zones are not adequately refined to accurately solve the flux boundary problem for infiltration at the surface of the tailings. This paper describes the development of a flux boundary model that enabled accurate modelling of the unsaturated zone in the tailings impoundment at Kidston Gold Mine, Queensland, Australia. The technique made it possible to accurately predict the spatial variation of infiltration to the tailings as a result of the presence of the phreatic table. The conceptual model defines the boundaries for the Kidston tailings dam, based on a generalised cross-section through the dam. Firstly the shape of the top boundary is described as a function of the particle size of the tailings associated with particle segregation that occurs due to the hydraulic placement of tailings. This function was rigorously tested using in situ infiltration tests and laboratory materials testing. Defining the bottom boundary of the section, ie the phreatic level was done by physically monitoring the phreatic level with 42 piezometers strategically located on the tailings dam. Analysis of this data led to the fixing of this bottom boundary through the introduction of a function that mimicked the shape of the phreatic level. The material properties of the surface layer, specifically the saturated permeability that would govern the infiltration/exfiltration rates of moisture through the top boundary layer were defined on the basis of extensive field and laboratory material testing. A function for the saturated permeability was developed on the principles of particle segregation. Finally a procedure is described for the application of the new conceptual model for the evaluation of the spatial infiltration to a tailings surface using the rigorous one dimensional surface flux boundary code SoilCover. The solution of the calculation described above was then used as the top boundary condition in conventional three dimensional saturated/ unsaturated flow codes, and verified against measured seepage rates from the tailings impoundment under drains. It was concluded that the developed spatial flux function was in deed a most rigorous representation of reality. Although the methodology presented here was applied to the Kidston tailings impoundment only, the authors believe that the principles are directly transferable to any tailings impoundment that has a varying phreatic zone thickness due to the presence of a pond. The mathematical equations describing the typical cross-section would be site specific, but the approach and ultimate solution methodology would be directly transferable.

Gold was discovered in the Bendigo area of Victoria in 1851 (Willman and Wilkinson, 1993), and all the early gold mining of any note involved washing (puddling) the gold out of the regolith or alluvium. The waste material from this process was a semi-fluid mixture of rock debris, soil and water, referred to as `sludge'. Puddling machines were gradually introduced to speed up the puddling process (Cole, 1994), and by 1855 an estimated 2000 machines were in the district (Anderson, 1978). In 1859 it was estimated that approximately 2 293 000 m3 of material was puddled annually by the machines on the eastern side of the goldfield, whose waste drained into Bendigo Creek and its tributary gullies. It was also estimated that after the gold was removed, approximately one-quarter of the residue/sludge consisted of the heavier, coarse-grained material which settled out fairly quickly, while the remainder, approximately 1 720 000 m3, was the fine-grained material which flowed downstream for some distance (VPP, 1859 - 60). From these figures it can be assumed that for the ten years during which this volume of puddling was maintained (1854 - 1864) over 5 700 000 m3 of gravels and sands and 17 200 000 m3 of fine-grained sludge had been discharged into and around Bendigo Creek. This was enough to cover an area of over 400 km2 to a depth of 5 cm. By 1859 the problems associated with the sheer volume of sludge being discharged were such that a Royal Commission was appointed to `Enquire into the Best Method of Removing the Sludge from the Gold Fields' (VPP, 1859 - 60). The goldfields referred to were those in the Bendigo area around the township of Sandhurst (now known as Bendigo). The Report of the Commission (VPP, 1859 - 60) stated that: `... inspection of the country bordering upon the course of the Bendigo Creek, to a distance of about fifty miles from Sandhurst . . . ' had revealed that the sludge had ' . . . filled up watercourses and flooded pasture lands . . . '. It also noted that ' . . . even on the plains, thirty or forty miles away from Sandhurst, where the sludge flows thin, and is relieved from its heavier particles, we found it baked into a perfect concrete, and in thicknesses varying up to two feet or more . . . '. The italics were used for emphasis in the original text. As it was considered unlikely that the physical evidence for such widespread inundation would have disappeared completely over the intervening 130 or so years, a project was initiated to locate any evidence of the inundation in the current landscape. If such evidence were to be found, then an estimate could be made of both its extent and its effects on the topography, drainage, and land-use of the inundated area. Extensive field work has determined that over 700 km2 to the north of Bendigo was inundated by the sludge. The area has not been uniformly covered, but has occasional `inliers' which have obviously escaped inundation by being slightly higher than the surrounding areas. Today the sludge is readily identified as a very fine-grained, hard-setting, concrete-like `capping' overlying a well-developed, well-structured, pedal horizon, or in some instances, the gravels and sands of a creek bed. The question of prediction and prevention of dynamic events û rock bursts (RB), tectonic rock burst (TRB) and mining-induced earthquakes (MIE), induced by large-scale mining, are discussed. The mine itself and the host geological environment are taken as a natural-technical system (NTS) whose evolution is characterised by alteration of the adaptation-bifurcation (catastrophes) periods. So, to predict TRB-MIE means to predict the limiting NTS states that are determined from the NTS geological monitoring data, and to prevent the said events means to control the processes of rock deformation and failure within the critical zone. The study considers particular examples of how TRB-MIE-events are predicted and prevented in apatite mines, Kola peninsula, Russia.

The iron ore producer Rana Gruber AS is situated in northern Norway just below the Arctic Circle, and has been producing hematite and magnetite concentrates for more than 60 years. Since the late 1990s, the major part of the production comes from a sublevel stoping underground operation after many years of open pit mining. Despite moderate mining depth, the operations have experienced considerable rock stress problems due to quite high tectonic, horizontal stresses. To manage the problems, comprehensive rock mechanics investigations have been carried out by SINTEF, a major contract research organisation. This has included in situ rock stress measurements, laboratory investigations and numerical modelling. Based on this and practical experience, satisfactory design of vertical and horizontal pillars was achieved. At depth, the ore width increases from 30–40?m to more than 100?m. This, together with a major planned increase in production, called for a change of the mining method. After thorough investigations and considerations, it was decided to change to sublevel caving, very much like the LKAB system. The development of the new system has been closely followed up by rock mechanics measures, including 3D numerical modelling and comprehensive monitoring of deformations and rock stress changes. To achieve a satisfactory caving of the hanging wall, all vertical and horizontal pillars in the sublevel stoping area had to be removed. This has been a challenging task, and the development of the caving has been slow until recently. This paper discusses two such plants, located in two distinctly different areas of Papua New Guinea and the solutions evolved in order to design successful operating facilities.

Bougainville copper concentrate was leached with a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (SPKI) in a 5 per cent CO2 nitrogen atmosphere.Copper solubilization was 100 per cent in presence of bacteria and only 30 per cent in a sterile acid control medium.Anaerobic copper solubilization rates were one quarter of those measured under aerobic conditions and did not generate acidity.

The increasing use of Ditch Witch trenching to define gold ore bound- aries in supergeme enriched near surface open cut mines has led to the consideration of using this technique for other sampling procedures. The use of Ditch Witch trenching for exploration has not been widely used and it is anticipated that the technique described will help stimulate more extensive use and new sampling techniques.

My topic for today is the Crown Minerals of the future. New work initiatives are underway and the organisational structure is being overhauled. These are not insignificant changes and in this paper briefly summarises these proposals. These new work initiatives and changes to the organisational structure will have implications for the industry as a whole and also for the way individual clients interact with Crown Minerals.
