Various aspects of the history of mining at The Zinc Corporation, Limited (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NHHC) are examined. There are some discussions about the various methods used to mine the pillars left after the primary mining operations, with an enphasis being placed on the more modern pillar mining methods. Some new pillar mining proposals are presented. INTRODUCTION In the past, pillar reserves at ZC/NBHC have been scheduled for mining by labour intensive and high unit cost mining methods. These methods include both undercut and fill and overhand square set timber stoping. Recent technological advances in large diameter longhole drilling and high charge density explosives have culminated in the mechanised Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) mining method and this method has been successfully used for the extraction of two pillars at NBHC and more stopes are planned. However the use of VCR methods for mining pillars at ZC/NBHC is restricted to approximately 50 per cent of the total pillar reserves and it appears that high cost methods will be needed to mine the remaining Pillars.

I start with some lines from "Pleasures of Hope" by the poet Campbell, published in 1798, which sets the flavour of what I am going to say. They blissful omens bid my spirit see The boundless fields of rapture yet to be; I watch the wheels of Nature's mazy plan, And learn the future by the past of man. I hope to echo the poet's optimistic view of what is yet to come. I am not sure I can find all the omens blissful but we all have some experience of what the wheels of Nature's mazy plan get up to. His advice to learn the future by the past of man seemed sensible to follow, so on the principle that the past of several men would be better than one alone I invited Alan Attwood, Maurice Cahalan, Gavin Moncrieff, Derek Temple, and Peter Wright to help me prepare this address; I am most grateful to them for their contributions. Of the technologies covered in this sequence of keynote addresses, metallurgy is the one which is closest to our consumers. On the age-old principle, which I do not expect to see changed in the 21st Century, that production is about providing the customer with what he wants, when he wants it, where he wants it, and at a price he can afford, I think we should start by trying to see how the market place is likely to develop, and to work back from there to review what technology we need to meet these demands.

S. A. Tomich (Consulting Geologist, Perth) : I would like to commend Mr. Haycraft on his presentation on the economic geology of the North End of Kalgoorlie. This is an intriguing area which is in the Kalgoorlie field but not of it, inasmuch as it is separated spatially from the main Golden Mile by the Golden Pike Fault. Mr. Haycraft has stressed the differences-the mineralogical and structural differences of economic significance between the two areas.I would like to ask whether he is satisfied that the lithological sequence in the North End is the duplicate of that in the main Golden Mile area irrespective of the postulated effects of erosion, and more specifically whether there is any chance that the quartz-dolerite-greenstone of the North End may be in any way dissimilar from the quartz-dolerite-greenstoneof the Golden Mile which is tellurude bearing.J. A. Haycraft: In relating the quartz-dolerite in the Hannan's North-Mount Charlotte area back to the Golden Mile, we find some quite close similarities. Although the rocks are similar they are not necessarily one and the same.At Mount Charlotte we have three varieties of dolerite- a coarse-grained gabbroic dolerite on the eastern side of the orebody, the host rock medium grained and on the western side, a fine grained dolerite. Further west we have an amphibolitic variety of quartz dolerite.Recent drilling south of the Golden Pike fault on the Enterprise No. 20 level had indicated a remarkably similar sequence of rocks. We drilled west through a wide section of medium grained rocks into a fine grained rock and then into amphibolitic quartz dolerite before intersecting the Golden Pike fault. Since the introduction of froth flotation for industrial practice, the process has long been developed and improved by making cultivated guesses or by using trial and error methods to a varying degree. Fresh possibilities have emerged after development of new surface sensitive analysing methods and in situ electrochemical methods. Having had the possibility to combine different findings between science and everyday plant practice, Outokumpu has been able to develop a catch-all procedure to manage a flotation process taking into account the specific requirements set by different minerals in a slurry. A number of these procedures are available and offered globally to clients as part of a Plant Audit service. The Outokumpu Plant Process Audit (Process ef-X) concept comprises of mineralogical determinations from process samples and plant data analysis together with electrochemical process measurements using mineral electrodes. Automatic control loop analysis can also be included. The objective is to combine the results for a basis of flotation process improvement. Since this methodology has earlier been an in-house practice, it follows that the results are also reflected in the development and design of the OutokumpuÆs processing equipment. An increasing number of ores have a very intimate fine-grained texture and it may be physically impossible to combine high grade with acceptable recovery by a flotation process alone. For such cases, combinations of different hydrometallurgical û mineral separation û pyrometallurgical processes are available. Mineral specific information and chemical expertise of flotation technology can be utilised in development of other processes, as well.

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a large country of over 1 000 000 square kilometres situated on the Atlantic coast of north-west Africa. It is bounded to the north by Western Sahara and Algeria, to the east by Mali, and to the south by Mali and Senegal. With the exception of a narrow strip in the south along the Senegal River valley, the country lies entirely within the Sahara. The north of the country is largely devoid of vegetation, and it is estimated that 90 per cent of the population of 2.1 million people live in the southern quarter of the country. From about the turn of the century, Mauritania was ruled by the French from Dakar in Senegal and, until 1960 when it obtained independence from the French, Mauritania did not have a capital. Today, the capital is Nouakchott, home to an estimated 600 000 Moors of mixed Arab, Berber and African descent. After independence in 1960, disputes over Spanish Sahara to the north led to a military coup in 1978 and it was not until 1991 that a democratic constitution was adopted. The new constitution declares Mauritania to be an `Islamic, African, and Arab Republic.' It provides for an executive president, elected for a six-year term, and for a bicameral legislature, consisting of a national assembly and a senate. The first presidential and legislative elections were held in 1992 under United Nations' supervision. Mauritania's economy is predominantly pastoral, and the country depends heavily on foreign aid. Its principal export industries are iron ore mining (about ten million tonnes per annum from mines near Fderik in the north) and fishing. Mines d'Or d'Akjoujt SA (MORAK), a company in which General Gold Resources NL (GGR) has 42.5 per cent equity, produces over 50 000 ounces of gold per annum, which represents the third largest export industry in the country.

The use of scrapers in mining and earthmoving operations is not new; in fact they are one of the earliest methods of bulk earthmoving. A single machine, which can load, haul, and dump material with a minimum of ancillary support is a highly productive and cost-efficient method of earthmoving. In recent times scrapers have been unpopular due to perceived problems and operational limitations, but the last couple of years have seen a resurgence in the use of scrapers in the Bowen Basin as a primary prestripping tool. The main operational limitation of scrapers is the economic operating range. Maximum productivity and lowest cost per bcm is achieved on short leads, as the lead distance increases the cost per bcm quickly reaches and then overtakes that of an truck-excavator fleet. The geometry of a ætraditionalÆ coal mine does not readily allow short leads for prestrip fleets due to the nature of dragline stripping operations. The strip arrangement means that material has to be taken around the end of the pit, meaning a longer haul distance than the actual point-to-point distance between load and dump. This can be alleviated by using pit bridges, however these can cause spoil problems for draglines if not properly planned and have been avoided by many mines. Due to the economic haul distance limitation of scrapers, truck-excavator fleets have become the normal method utilised. Currently more geologically complex mines are opening up, which do not allow traditional down-dip strip mining to occur. Cross-dip mining methods allow for short leads between prestrip loading and dumping areas, hence scrapers and bulk doze are realistic alternatives to a truck-excavator fleet in the prestrip environment. Keeping the lead distance to a minimum a fleet of 657Æs can move material at a very low cost. The other main operational limitation of scrapers is the type of material that can be economically excavated. Hard material can lead to damage to the bowl, free-flowing sand will not readily stay in the bowl leading to reduced load factors. Ripping the material with a dozer prior to excavating can lead to improved loading time, and greatly reduced GET consumption. When considering scrapers for prestrip operations a number of things must be considered: is the lead distance within the economic haul distance? should twin power (push-pull) or single power (dozer pushed) scrapers be used? do I need to rip, what should I rip with? what ancillary support is required? is there another system already available on-site which is currently under utilised? This paper considers the parameters under which large twin power scrapers are the most effective way of undertaking prestrip operations.

Technological development is accelerating in the mining industry (Abrahamsson and Johansson, 2021) and in large parts of the world there is an increased environmental awareness (United Nations, 2015). This can mean both challenges and opportunities. The mining industry has long been criticized for its adverse environmental effects. However, there is now a lively discourse about the role of mining in facilitating the green transition towards sustainable development. Mining is increasingly recognised as a prerequisite for the green transition, by supplying key raw materials to enable, for example, digitisation and batteries for electric vehicles. The green transition not only amplifies the demand for metals and minerals but also intensifies pressure on the mining sector to assume greater responsibility for environmental and societal welfare (Dehaine et al, 2020). New technology, such as digitisation, automation, and remote control, play a crucial role in advancing towards more sustainable mining practices. Despite the expanding role of advanced technology, human involvement will remain important in the extraction process (Rogers et al, 2019), but new technology will change how miners do their work, which in turn will lead to changed competence requirements for miners (Herbert and Hidalgo, 2021) and increased need for further education. Given the significant shift towards sustainable mining, it is important to study how these changes may affect the work, competences, further education and skills of miners as human expertise will continue to be critical in the extraction process. Consequently, there is a need for proactive research to prepare for the inevitable changes and implement measures to support miners through this changeable period to ensure a smooth transition that protects miners’ safety and working environment. This extended abstract explores how new technology will affect the need for further education of miners in the future.

The lignite deposits of Southland and Central Otago are a potentially significant energy resource for New Zealand. Current estimates put the technically mineable lignite reserves at 5.3 billion tonnes, which is more than ten times the energy content of the Maui gas field. Thus, the strategic importance of the lignite as a basis for maintaining current levels of self-sufficiency in transport fuels, or as a possible feedstock for electricity generation, deserves full investigation. The full extent of the lignite deposits was only recently established as the result of a scout drilling programme undertaken between 1976 and 1979 by the Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy, and from companion studies conducted by the New Zealand Geological Survey. These discoveries of large quantities of lignite coupled, at the time, with rising oil prices, raised the prospect of their development for production of transport fuels.

The paper will review the fundamental policy issues and options that have been considered in the determination of the proposed allocation and pricing (ie royalty) regime for minerals under the Crown Minerals Act 1991. It will consider such influences on the new disposal, allocation, pricing and management arrangements for the Crown's mineral estate as the existence of prior ownership claims, exclusivity in access, the requirement for cost recovery and the treatment of contingent liabilities.

Key technical and operational learnings since the first underground stope was filled are presented. Traditionally mining and conservation have been regarded as opposing and mutually exclusive concepts of land use. Often problems are anticipated which cannot be substantiated by facts. In addition, an ill defined time-scale adds to potentially emotive issues. Examples from Australia and elsewhere are presented which illustrate the dynamic nature of the environment and accentuate sequence patterns in plant community development following natural and man-made disturbances. The mining industry generally appears to be aware of the environmental impact of mining and whilst endeavouring to minimise the disturbance, is still orientated towards maximum production.

Several coal preparation plants are presently "automated" to the extent of automatic sequencing and interlocking via digital means, together with closed loop control on various level and density circuits. This paper will explore the potential for second generation automation utilizing on-stream ash analysers and other measuring elements so as to optimize the total metallurgical process. This would enable maxim-ization of recovery, improved product homogeneity and minimum reagent consumption.

The Inquiry into the 1994 accident at Moura No. 2 Colliery included in it's findings that mine escape and rescue options for persons in underground coal mines were in need of review. The Inquiry recommended the establishment of industry working groups to report to the Queensland Chief Inspector of Coal Mines on matters including escape strategy and life support for escape from mines.One of these task groups examined issues relevant to self-escape from Australian underground coal mines and formulated recommendations and guidelines in response to the terms of reference and scope.

Recent studies in the Archaean of the Kalgoorlie-Norseman area show that the layered rocks can be subdivided into two main units, both containing basic igneous rocks and sediments. The lower unit is distinguished by the presence of acid volcanic flows and sills. In some areas, clastic sediments become coarser and,pas-s into conglomerates. This passage is accompanied by thinning of the beds. These features and their distribution suggest a basin of subsidence flanked-by areas of shallow-water deposition. -.

The regulation of environmental management in the minerals and petroleum industries has been undergoing considerable change over the past decade. In recent years, there has been a distinct trend towards smaller government and increased environmental awareness. Current regulatory systems have generally neither responded to these trends nor effectively dealt with the demands placed on them. There is a need to develop a more effective means of providing assurance to Government and the community that its environmental objectives are being met. These means must also enable industry to have an effective environmental management process.

A report is given of the problems of finance and physical resources that currently affect The University of New South Wales, and of some of the measures adopted to alleviate them. Partly as' a result of review procedures, a School of Mines was formed to amalgamate Applied Geology and Mining Engineering, and to add the skills of extractive metallurgy to produce a group to match the needs of the minerals industry. A review of courses within the School indicated a need for enhanced computer teaching, which is partially negated by a lack of resources. It also shows an overcrowded course whose structure could possibly benefit from a split into managerial and specialist streams.

Offshore petroleum development involves massive capital expenditure and financing demands, with the main participants being large international oil companies and State owned enterprises. Types of project oriented financing include take-or-pay contracts, throughput agreements, and production payment financing. The main project finance credit aspects are revenues, investment budgets and cost over- runs, reservoir, political and other risks and special problems such as weather and corrosion in the North Sea. A variety of documents is required and a mix of equity, export credit and Euro-market financing will typically be included in the financing.
