Marketing of mineral products has not yet succumbed to the degree of pre- dictability and exactitude that is fam- iliar to the engineer or metallurgist in pursuing their profession. Whilst the Great Market of the world economy dic- tates circumstances for the sale of min- eral products, there are more than just buyers and sellers in the determination of the revenue received by the producer. For the engineer or metallurgist he will be required to gain an understanding of these participants and of the peculiar languages of the market place. This will be only one of his tasks in learn- ing to communicate with society, as his responsibilities increase as he climbs the ladder of success. There is un- doubtedly a need for better statistical information so that producers and sell- ers can make an appropriate and earlier response to market conditions. There is in addition, a need for more aggressive concern by raw material producers for the development and promotion of better end use of their products. Undoubtedly the marketing of mineral products will be more influenced by the direct involv- ment of government agencies than has been the case in the past. Whilst that 1. Steel fibre reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) is increasingly being used as ground support in both civil and mining applications. In recent years, methods of assessing the performance of SFRS have been developed. These include the beam test such as that prescribed by ASTM C-1018 and the panel test prescribed in the EFNARC European Shotcreting Standard. The panel test has gained popularity in recent times due to the two-way action modelled in the test. However, some difficulties have been noticed. Shear failures sometimes occur and there appears to be a rather high degree of variability in the panel test results. A new method of testing panels has been proposed. A circular panel supported on three symmetrically arranged points has been assessed at the University of Western Sydney. This paper describes the new test which may be the basis of a new specification for the testing of toughness of SFRS and summarises research work which has been carried out to-date.

Many transport tunnels show distress after few decades of construction. Owing to exorbitant cost of replacement, rehabilitation of tunnels has become inevitable and rapidly gaining attention/significance worldwide. This paper discusses the detailed planning and design of remedial measures for repairs and rehabilitation of the twin tube highway tunnel in India, at an elevation of 2200 m constructed approximately 38 years ago. The tunnel length is 2547 m having 30 m2 cross-sectional area of each tube. The tunnel is lined in stretches, totalling 60 per cent lined and the remaining portions are unlined. The tunnel has developed acute problems of rock falls, water leakage, distressed pavement and icicle formation resulting in slow movement of vehicular traffic which has also increased. Suffocation inside the tunnel caused deaths due to inadequate natural ventilation, hence artificial ventilation was deemed necessary and was provided in the restricted 28.5 m2 cross-sectional area of tunnel. The paper would be useful for planners, designers and construction engineers for setting future trends.

The most common reason for gold-bearing deposits being refractory is the presence of sulphides; in many cases these interfering minerals contain arsenic, antimony, or other environmentally-sensitive elements. A number of processes have been proposed or developed for pre-oxidation of interfering minerals. In most cases developers have focussed on gold recovery and capital costs, with relatively little data on the deportment or form of these potentially harmful elements. This paper surveys recent work connected with pressure pre-oxidation processes. Data from pilot plant treatment of refractory gold materials, using the nitric acid Redox process, is discussed along with the attendant flowsheet and engineering implications. Four refractory gold-bearing materials have also been tested at the University of South Australia for arsenic and antimony deportments.

My paper presents a discussion of the legislative and departmental requirements in connection with the acquisition of exploration rights for minerals (other than petroleum and coal) in the Independant State of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Queensland and he practical problems associated with land entry and land ownership associated therewith. In general there are many similarities in the methodology and philosophy behind the legislation in each country and the contractual requirements established thereby between the exploration company (the explorer) and the government and the mines department or equivalent in each place. There are also a number of differences. I have prepared the paper on the basis that my audience will largely consist of -experienced explorers and the paper is intended to act as a brief refresher and a guide to the philosophy and the practicalities behind the legislation and practices in ground entry in each case. I will deal in turn with New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and then Queensland.

The three papers reviewed here consider different problems of mine management. Comparison of two of the papers demonstrates a marked contrast between the old and the new, in terms of mine management and impacts. The third paper discusses post-mining rehabilitation. The paper "The impact of a derelict base metal mine on the aquatic environment", by Brooks and Mclveen contrasts strongly with the paper "Narbarlek Uranium Mine design, construction, operation monitoring and decommissioning of the water management system" by McLoughlin, Grounds and Weatherhead. Brooks and Mclveen detail the contamination emanating today from the Conrad Mine in New South Wales which was mainly operated for 15 years at the turn of the century and later for 7 years in the 1950's. The mine was apparently developed over the years on an intermittent, ad hoc basis with no regard to contamination management, resulting Ti significant contamination persisting through time. This type of mining development is the antithesis to the type of planned mining and management operation which was carried out in Arnhem Land at Narbalek, and which apparently resulted in no uncontrolled contaminant release and successful decommissioning of the mine.

The Hellyer orebody is a fine grained, massive sulphide Pb-Zn-Ag- Cu-Au deposit located in western Tasmania. Initial testwork showed that the orebody would be difficult but not impossible to treat by conven- tional flotation. A staged programme-of work was commenced to demon- strate that marketable concentrates could be produced with satisfactory recoveries. Following laboratory testing of drill core to define two flowsheets, bulk samples of Hellyer totalling 20,000 tonnes were trialled at 6 tph in the Cleveland concentrator over six months. The high through- put and extended duration of the trials ensured maximum confidence in the results and that scale-up to subsequent plants would be with a mini- mum of risk. The milling trials were successful and the Cleveland concentrator was expanded in early 1987 to treat 250,000 tpa of Hellyer ore to produce 85,000 tpa of bulk concentrates. Late in 1987 construction commenced on a 1 mtpa concentrator at Hellyer to produce separate copper/silver, lead, zinc and bulk concentrates.

Product stewardship in its most basic form is simply risk management applied to the products we produce. Conceptually it may be considered as a more expansive approach to many existing safety, heath and environmental programs. Key differences include the extension of responsibility beyond the direct control of management, and consideration of the implications your products and processes have on the broader community, as opposed to the confines of an individual mine site or operation. This paper reviews the processes used by Orica Ltd to manage its product stewardship program. OricaÆs product stewardship program is expansive and supports activities and business that range from manufacture and delivery of commercial explosives and sodium cyanide to mines throughout the world, supply and operation of municipal water facilities, and manufacture and distribution of consumer products such as household paints and adhesives. We highlight the development of the program through experience both good and bad, and by use of case studies to illustrate how an active product stewardship program is an effective business risk mitigation strategy.

HORWOOD wrote: In view of the difficulty of obtaining accurate results when using plumb lines in shafts, owing to the effect of currents of air, the writer, over M years ago, devised a method of transferring oearings from the surface to, the underground workings independently of plumb lines.An attachment was procured for the theodolite consisting of a 45° prism enabling a view of a fine line stretched across the shaft at the surface to be observed from the bottom of the shaft. The instrument was set up in such a position that.a view of the portion of the surface line could be obtained as close as possible to the shaft timbers.By candle light signals an assistant at the surface moved his line so that the portion close to the side or end of the shaft coincided with the cross wires of the theodolite. The theodolite was then swung to enable the crosswires to traverse the surface line. It was a simple matter to transfer the bearing of the surface line to points in the drive extending from the shaft. Similarly the relation of the bearing of the surface line to the shaft, with which a connection was intended, was easily obtained.The success of this method was demonstrated at Broken Hill in making connections many hundreds of feet from the shafts from which these were driven.

The geotechnical and environmental aspects of heap leaching are very closely tied during design, operations and closure. Potential environmental impacts from heap leaching are mostly due to land disturbance and water quality issues, including both groundwater and surface water. Water quality issues are mostly related to containment design, which is primarily a function of proper sizing of the facilities and site specific liner design. Geotechnical analyses is the dominant discipline in providing cost efficient, operationally effective and environmentally sound heap leach facility designs. Much has been published on geotechnical aspects of heap leach design, for example Van Zyl, Hutchison and Kiel (1988) and Van Zyl (1987). This paper will emphasize a few specific aspects related to the geotechnical and environmental consideration for heap leach projects. These aspects are: ò site investigation; ò containment design; ò slope stability; ò heap flow dynamics; and ò closure design. Design of a heap leach project must consider not only the operating life but also closure and post-closure considerations. As a matter of standard practice, designing for closure is an extremely important concept. Not only is it important for environmental aspects, but experience also shows that projects designed for closure will be overall more economical for the total life cycle of the project. Closure considerations are also important during project feasibility evaluations to ensure that total life cycle costs are evaluated.

There is a wide variety of industrial pastes or non-settling slurries pumped in mining, dredging and reclamation projects as products, refuse and tails. The types and/or names of some of the common ones are alumina red mud, phosphate clays, tar sands mature fine tails, tar sands (CT) consolidated clays and fly ash. The pipeline performance or friction of these varies dramatically with the type, its concentration and the particulars of the actual slurry making it difficult to select pumping equipment and to design associated pipelines. The GIW Hydraulic Laboratory in Grovetown Georgia has tested a number of these slurries over the last 30 years for various mining customers. Where available in the public domain and/or where permission has been obtained, the results of those tests are presented in this paper in a form usable for pipeline and pump system designers and users.

Vibration of surface caused by seismic quakes can make a risk to great mining costruction. We have to do with this risk in the Belchatow open cut mine where seismic quakes of various energy and range have occured since the end of 1970s. The seismic risk influence on the mine structure with the special attention to the slopes of an internal dump has been presented. Hydrogeological and geotechnical conditions of the lignite mining and internal dumping of overburden and ash from Belchatow power plant have been considered. Seismic activity in Belchatow open cut from 1979 to 2001 was described and the connection between mine working and seismicity of this area was investigated. The energy and approximate location of the quakes and seismological parameters of the strongest ones observed from 1995 to 2001 were presented. The mechanism of the quake focuses was determined by means of the primary-arriving wave method. Stability of the slopes was evaluated by means of the Fellenius method. It has been found that seismic events occured in Belchatow region may cause only local eboulements whereas there are not any safety risks to the stability of slopes of the internal dump in Belchatow open cut.

Drilling is one of the most, significant cost components of any stoping or develop- ment operation. Two of the factors contri- buting to the drilling cost are the supply and servicing of consumable items such as drill rods and bits. The purchase cost of consumable items can be controlled to a large extent by using the correct balance of quality and price. However, the service cost is a less easily controlled factor and it is in this area where potential savings are significant. In June, 1976 a six month trial period was commenced at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited with two separate suppliers supplying and ser- vicing all longhole drilling parties (one supplier for each mine) at a guaranteed cost per metre. As a result of this six month trial period a new contract was commenced in December, 1976 with one supplier supplying and servicing all longhole drilling parties at both ZC and NBHC for a twelve month period. This concept has now been in operation for over twelve months and has proved to be a significant means of slowing down the increas- ing cost associated with drilling operations.

THE Great Fitzroy Mines Limited, comprising an area of 183 acres, and held under lease, are situated at Mt. Chalmers, within the Cawarral goldfield, 18 miles from the city of Rockhampton, Queensland, on the Rockhampton-Yeppoon railway.The nearest railway station i; Mt. Ohalmers, distant about half a mile from the mine, with which it is connected by a fairly good road. The outcrop of the ore-body consists almost entirely of ironstained quartzite, no sign of copper being visible. The outcrop and its immediate vicinity have been worked intermittently for gold during the past :fifty years, the ore being amenable to battery treatment.About twenty years ago a company was formed to prospect this outcrop, and work was commenced by driving an adit, but the results proved disappointing, and work ceased. Later a party of prospectors sunk a winze from the adit level, which has sincedeveloped into wh~t is now known as the North shaft. The property was afterwards prospected by Messrs. Oharley and Osborne, who continued sinking the winze, meeting with sulphides at a depth of about 120 ft.The Mt. Chalmers Copper Mining Company was formed to work the property, and smelting operations started on a small scale. These, however, met with ip.different success, and the property was again abandoned.

Mine hoisting is carried out from depths of up to 4 km. At extreme depths, the ropes are so heavy that a large part of their capacity is employed in lifting themselves. Consequently, deep mines have an intermediate winding station. Even at lesser depths, the weight of steel wire rope reduces the possible payload. Of course, steel wire ropes have, over the years, demonstrated exceptional reliability and acceptable lifetimes. The use of steel is supported by well established operating rules and sound NDT methods. However, lightweight ropes made from synthetic fibres could be of great benefit to the industry, with the prospect of eliminating two-stage winding and substantially increasing the payload. Initial tests, in cycling over sheaves, have demonstrated that an aramid co-polymer fibre, Technora« is a potential candidate for this type of service. This paper presents results of testing carried out on aramid co-polymer and other synthetic fibre ropes. These results hold out the prospect of exceptionally long lives. Possible NDT methods are explored including optical fibres with optical time domain reflectometry or with Brillouin scattering, plus a method based on carbon fibre continuity. The introduction of aramid co-polymer ropes will require extensive testing and a program is proposed in the format of a Joint Industry Project.

I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by re-organising, and a wonderful method this is for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralisation This was written by the Roman Gaius Petronius in AD65. How much have things changed in nearly 2,000 years? What then does it take besides the fundamentals and good organisation to build a successful career in a successful organisation? I'm prepared to venture a list of what I'll'call Tips for Young Professionals. If you've got what it takes, and apply these, I think that you'll gain a great deal of satisfaction from your career, even if you don't reach the distant target each of you should have in mind now. So settle back in an advice-receiving mode, and please forgive me if I come across as a master of the bleedin' obvious, as Basil once accused his wife Sybil of being in the unforgettable Fawlty Towers.

Bauxitic laterite of variable thickness and grade is best developed in the Darling Range but covers a large part of the southwest corner of Western Australia. Its limits are defined by the rainfall isohyets to which jarrah forest is confined. Within this broad belt there is an increase in arable land southwards concomitant with a thinning of the laterite layer.Bauxite quality and perhaps thickness as well are dependent on the type of source rock, and are influenced by topography. Economic deposits occur over a vertical range in altitude of about 1200 ft. Some bauxite orebodies appear shoot-like in character, and analogy is suggested with the ore shoots of syngenetic metalliferous deposits.The alumina is in the form of gibbsite enabling low temperature digestion in treatment.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the existence of bauxite in Australia has been known for many years it is only recently that exploitation has commenced of the two most important deposits, strangely at almost diagonally opposite tips of the continent (Fig. 1).Recognition of the importance of the bauxite in the southwest corner came about initially through the efforts of Western Aluminium N.L. which, with some outside financial help, tackled the early exploration with commendable foresight and courage. In both the U.S.A. and Canada regulations concerning the reporting on mineral resources and especially ore reserves have been established. The regulations are virtually identical for the two countries with the main exceptions being who is franchised to write the report and how the various reserve categories may be used in reports to the public. Both countries divide ore reserves into "proven", "probable" and "inferred" categories. "Proven" reserves are those for material for which tonnage is computed from dimensions revealed in outcrops, trenches, underground workings or drill holes and for which the grade is composed from the results of adequate sampling. "Probable" reserves are those which are less well defined than "proven" while "inferred" reserves are generally those which may exist through geological and geophysical interpretation. The AusIMM/AMIC draft guidelines as proposed for use in Australia define more rigidly the ore reserve categories into "proved" and "probable" terms, which can only be applied following a full and favourable analysis of economic, mining, metallurgical, marketing and sociopolitical factors. If the ore reserves are not supported by this analysis they are placed into a "resource" category. Proper application of this proposed Australian model could prove useful when dealing with grass-root prospects or mining properties in the pre-feasibility stage. Combined with competent reporting, use of the proposed guidelines should ensure standardised and more verifiable analysis/valuation of a company's mineral assets.

The Canadian mining industry was in turmoil in the early 1980s. The post-war era based on reconstruction faded away after the high demands for minerals in the 1950s and 1960s. Also, the industry had the misconception that the demand growth would continue for ever but the rapid growth of resource industries in the third world in the 60s and 70s, resulted in worldwide production overcapacity. The Canadian mining industry eventually recognised the facts and took drastic action for cost control and innovation in technology. The cost control had an immediate effect on the survival of the industry but resulted in only limited incremental gains. The economic problems that the Canadian mining industry faced in the early 1980s can be viewed now as a blessing in disguise. It was realised that for the Canadian mining industry to survive in the 21st century further gains were possible only through innovative technology. This conclusion led to a flurry of activity to establish mechanisms and delivery systems for innovative technology in the mining industry. Despite the initial difficulties in accepting high technology in the mining industry, it is being used increasingly in mining operations and will make future mining operations unrecognizable to present day mining engineers. The concept of an underground mine without underground staff seems to be far fetched, but it is possible that mines of the 21st century will approach the concept of very few underground operating personnel.

The past decade has seen a great increase in activity in deep seismic reflection profiling of the continental crust. Some 20 countries have conducted field experiments and the total length of deep seismic profiles surveyed to date is approximately 25,000 km. This total is very large compared to the quantity of such data that existed previously, but very small compared to the total length of seis- mic profiles of the shallow crust carried out for petroleum exploration, which some- times has exceeded 600,000 km on land in one year alone and 1,600,000 km/yr on land and sea. Furthermore, 25,000 km of seismic pro- filing corresponds to exploration of only a tiny fraction of the total volume of the entire continental crust. Thus at this stage of development of the subject, one must be wary of generalizations that are based on these limited data and then ex- tended in scope to include the crust everywhere. The state of the subject is such that virtually every new seismic line reveals totally unexpected seismic fea- tures, a sign that the subject is in its major discovery phase and a warning to the generalizers. Nevertheless, in addition to much new information on deep crustal structure in specific locations, some broad consequences of application of this powerful geophysical technique to a region of the earth not pre- viously explored in this manner are be- coming clear. One is that, as seismic data on the deep continental crust become more abundant and more revealing of complexi- ties, the deep crust can be far better re- lated to rocks at the surface. Conse- quently, the geological style of reason- ing is now being extended from its normal domain of the near-surface to include the deepest crust in a comprehensive story of the evolution of the continents. This change is a subtle but important one and is evident, for example, in some cross sec- tions of the North American Transect Pro- gram, which show surface geology extended in a consistent, though speculative, manner to the top of the mantle.
