The trend worldwide is for increasingly stringent control of sulphur dioxide emissions to the environment. It is therefore likely that Australian industry will be placed under increased pressure to restrict such emissions, and this will have implications for Australian smelters of mineral sulphide ores. Traditional outlets for sulphur dioxide emissions have been in sulphuric acid manufacture, but Australian demand for sulphuric acid has declined markedly in recent years. This paper examines the balance of supply and demand for sulphur and related products in Australia, the shifts occurring in that balance and the underlying causes of those trends.

The decrepitation technique is a rapid means of measuring abundances, temperatures and to some extent the fluid compositions, of fluid inclusions in transparent and opaque minerals. The method has been used to investigate the hydrothermal fluid systems associated with gold mineralisation in the Tennant Creek, Pine Creek and Halls Creek Goldfields. At the Enterprise Mine, Pine Creek, several different stages of quartz veining are distinguished and within these, gradational changes in fluid temperatures and compositions help to define the centre and nature of the thermal system responsible for the mineralisation. In the surrounding Pine Creek region and at Tennant Creek and Halls Creek, the results were applied on a regional scale to characterize outcrops and aid in the discrimination between potentially mineral- ized and barren outcrops. The decrepitation method involves the heating of a small (lgm) sample of crushed and sized grains up to as high as 800 degrees celsius. During the heating the fluid inclu- sions within the grains develop sufficient internal pressure to physically burst, the temperature of such bursting being dependent on the type of fluid and the prevailing tem- perature at the time the inclusion was originally trapped. The resulting tabulation of the number of inclusion bursts per 10 degree temperature interval is plotted as a histogram of decrepitations versus tempera- ture and called a decrepigram. The decrepi- grams frequently show several distinct peaks at different temperatures which are caused by different populations of inclusions in the sample. The areas of the peaks indicate the abundances of inclusions in each population while the shape and mean temperature of the peak provides a guide to the type of fluids involved. Of particular importance in this study is the presence of decrepitation peaks at fairly low temperatures (around 2000 C. These are characteristic of C02 rich fluids which build up internal pressure very quickly when heated. The Enterprise Gold Mine at Pine Creek comprises a number of overlapping quartz vein systems hosted by Burrell Creek Formation sediments. The geology of this mine has been described at this conference by Dann and Delaney, who have defined several distinct stages of quartz veining based on structural, mineralogical and physical features of the veins. For this decrepitation study, 19 quartz samples from the mine and environs, including some from each stage of veining were collected. These results suggest that there are 4 major vein types, within 3 of which additional small variations can be discerned which are due to gradational changes in the temperatures and fluid compositions in the mine area.

There has been considerable attention in the literature to coarse sizing by wet and dry screening, but these methods have not proven to be applicable to the calculation of screen capacities for fine wet sizing, desliming and media recovery: A method is presented for the calculation of the size of screens for such duties, being based on the mean particle size of the oversize material on the screen which reflects the surface area from which the fines or media must be removed. Similarly for dewatering, it is the area from which the water must be drained. Desliming, media recovery and dewatering are each considered along with water require- ments both with the feed and as wash water.

This paper provides an overview of the future for underground thick seam coal mining in Australia. It reviews the available and anticipated mining systems and technologies which may be adopted to mine coal seams of greater than 4.5 m thickness, together with an assessment of the likely technological and operational risks and challenges involved. This overview of mining systems is presented in the context of both current and recently completed research projects funded through the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP). The projects have been joint investigations between The University of New South Wales Mining Research Centre (UMRC) and the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE). Outcomes from the projects have included an appraisal and classification of underground thick seam reserves in Australia and their suitability for each mining method.

As part of the fundamental studies on the recovery of Au by solvent extraction, the synergism of combined extractants on the extraction of An from the sulphuric acid solution containing thiourea was investigated. Extractants tested were di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), tri-n-octylamine (TOA), tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP), and trioctyl phosphine oxide (TOPO). Four kinds of extractant combinations, D2EHPA/TBP, D2EHPA/TOPO, TOA/I'BP, and TOAITOPO, were tested to clarify the synergism on the extraction of Au in terms of various concentration ratios, diluents, the concentration of sulphuric acid, and the concentration of thiourea.

Aberfoyle sought to reduce Hellyer project development risk to a greater degree than usual. Consequently the ore reserves estimate and feasibility study were particularly comprehensive. A detailed ore reserve study was completed based on extensive drill core and underground sampling, large scale pilot plant work and a detailed feasibility study. Leading external consultants were used for advice on commercial matters which impact on ore reserves and to audit major technical conclusions, including the results from pilot plant work and the ore reserve estimate. Other project risks were diminished by negotiating a State agreement covering security of title, royalty formula and environmental management procedures, by obtaining sales contracts, and by analysing Hellyer's position on an industry cost curve. The task of financing the project was much simplified by the extent and quality of information available from the ore reserves estimate and feasibility study report.

The current approach to the design of fill, as a structural component in a mining system, is based on traditional usage, previous experience, empirical rules and preconceived ideas. This approach does not permit the relative economicsof the various possibilities to be evaluated, retards introduction of new materials or processes, and results in fragmented fill research effort.A rational approach to the design of fill is proposed as a means of overcoming these disadvantages.This is based on five components:(a) statement of functions of fill,(b) definition of modes of fill response,(c) criteria of satisfactory performance,(d) analysis of fill response,(e) specification of required fill properties and methods of obtaining them.An assessment of each component indicates that the adoption of this rational design approach will require research effort in categorising modes of fill response and in defining criteria of satisfactory performance.

The effect of various methods of conditioning on subsequent flotation performance was reviewed, where complex interactions involving attrition, aggregation, dispersion and surface cleaning were discussed. The present study focussed on the influences of standard laboratory cell conditioning, ultrasonic dispersion and high intensity conditioning on copper mineral flotation characteristics. The effect of substituting demineralised water for the WMC plant water was also examined. It was found that higher copper concentrate grades were often obtained using demineralised water, however the use of high intensity conditioning in mill water gave the highest copper recovery and highest flotation rate constant. This process should be considered if copper grade and recovery in this section of the plant drops, especially if the drop is due to surface oxidation of the copper minerals. Other methods of conditioning (cell and ultrasonic techniques) improved the rate of copper flotation above that obtained in the virtual absence of conditioning, showing the importance of conditioning on subsequent flotation operations.

Attention to the design of facilities for drainage, of both surface water and seepage, made it possible to attain, for a qam impounding residues from a concentrating mill, a more stable sand wall which can eventually be carried to a greater height.EXPERIENCE WITH No. 1 DAMResidue from the lead zinc concentrating mill, which treats the ore from the Rosebery and Hercules Mines, was pumped 3,600 ft. through a 5-in. diameter woodstave pipeline to the site of the dam. It was formerly delivered through a 4-in. steel pipeline.State laws prevent the residue being discharged to waste into the Stitt River. Furthermore, as a pyritic residue it is a potential source of sulphur.Between 1936 and 1956 more than 1,000,000 tons. of residue was paddocked. The run-of-mill product was roughly classified at the dam in a 6-ft. diameter cone classifier and the sand fraction was pumped by a 3-in. pump to the front wall of the dam across a shallow valley. Mine geologists have access to an economic mineral deposit, production parameters and secure exploitation title. They are well placed to understand ore formation and should contribute to the effective exploration of company mine property. Application of their special skills has been curbed by pre-occupation with production duties and by company re-engineering, including staff reductions. Contributions to exploration have been diminished and personal development inhibited. Modified management is required. Participation in mineral system studies and in exploration research comprise part of the basis for the re-emergence of mine geologists on the exploration scene. Changes in investment strategies in the minerals industry may create new employment opportunities. With regard to estimation of resources and reserves, the competence of practitioners who are incapable of disclosing their methods in transparent terms is under question. Ethical standards are also under public scrutiny because of some notable malpractice. Independent auditing may hecome more intrusive. While understandable in a market context, it reflects poorly on the profession. More substantial effort in public communications can improve the credihility ofthe industry and equip practising mine ceolouists for snider responsihility.

Sulphide concentrates are produced in a wide range of mineral processing operations. In the case of base metals they are further treated by smelting and/or hydrometallurgical techniques. In the case of refractory gold ores, sulphide concentrates containing gold are roasted or oxidised by various hydrometallurgical processes. This paper discusses the development of the Activox(R) Process which can provide an alternative method for treating sulphide concentrates. This process consists of fine or ultra-fine milling, followed by mild pressure oxidation to produce solutions of base metals or to liberate refractory gold. Base metal solutions (eg of nickel and cobalt) can be further processed by solvent extraction and electrowinning, while refractory gold can be recovered by cyanidation. The economics of the Activox(R) Process are often better than alternative oxidation techniques.

Argyle Diamond Mines Pty. Limited (ADM), manager and operator of the Argyle Diamond Mines Joint Venture (ADMJV) will recruit approximately 400 employees during 1985 to operate the new large-scale, open-cut diamond mine and treatment plant being developed at Argyle, in the East Kimberley Region of Western Australia. These employees will live in Perth or environs and will commute to work at Argyle via chartered jet aircraft. On site, they will be accommodated in self-contained single person's quarters, with central messing and recreational facilities. Rostering systems have not been finalised, but it is likely employees will rotate through a cycle of 14 days at site and seven-days on leave in Perth. ADM spent three years evaluating residen- tial options before deciding to commute its workforce from Perth. Another 70 senior staff will reside in Kununurra (the nearest established town, 250 km from Argyle) and commute to the mine daily by air.

The current philosophy employed in the design of mineral processing plants effectively involves bolting together segmented unit operations both chosen and optimised from a product-centric perspective. In this context, integration of water saving technologies at an overall plant level becomes difficult and often only local water efficiency improvements are feasible. In general only limited benefit can be obtained from such add-on solutions. It is therefore proposed that to obtain significant savings in water consumption and reductions in the volume of discharged contaminated water in the mining process, the entire process along the mining and mineral processing chain should be addressed This paper explores aspects of the processes that may be modified to provide an integrated and combined step change saving in water consumption. It is also apparent from this study that taking a more holistic view of the process can provide significant benefits in energy savings and total cost of production, providing the potential of a substantial win-win outcome.

Most mining projects will involve some level of financial markets price risk. This is because commodities are generally traded in $US. The project will also incur costs in $A and if based in Australia will seek to generate a return in Australian dollars. Therefore the project faces commodity, foreign exchange and interest rates risk. As a business you may wish to maintain these risks within your business. However if the project requires financing to be provided then the financiers will want to ensure that there is a level of certainty attached to the cash flows to support the debt repayments. This is achieved by hedging the financial market risks. Traditionally the hedging process has been based on underlying assumptions within project models, which incorporate views on the direction of the underlying price risk. These views can be formed in an ad hoc manner. Gathering information from a variety of sources including economic forecasting and modelling, technical analysis, seeking market expert views. However, given the historical accuracy of such forecasts locking into long-term fixed hedging arrangements can create an inflexible environment that can restrict the opportunity to benefit from the underlying volatility of financial markets.

Coal mining in the Illawarra commenced in 1848. By the early twentieth century mining operations were spread over quite a distance along the coast centred on Wollongong. By this time there were already numerous tunnel mines and one shaft mine. Coal was first reported in Illawarra by Lieutenant Flinders on a voyage of exploration, southerly along the coast from Sydney in 1796. Because of the topography, particularly the escarpment and the narrowness of the coastal plain, access from Sydney was not easy by land and the normal access was by sea. It was not until some coastal areas had been developed for agricultural purposes that the mining of the seams on the South Coast commenced for the supp- ly of fuel. The most important mines in the early nineteenth century were Bulli and Osborne Wallsend. In general, coal was won from the tunnel mines and was transported directly, usually by tramway, to the nearest shipping point. Considerable hardship attended the earliest attempts at mining coal in regard to materials for mining and the way of life of the miners in the vicinity of the mines. With the growth of production and the installation of coke ovens at some mines the area, hitherto virgin bush- land, began to take on a more industrialised appearance. The PT Freeport Indonesiaæs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) copper deposit is located in the province of Irian-Jaya, Indonesia. Currently, a block cave mine is being developed around this deposit. Production is scheduled to start the fourth-quarter of year 2000 and to ramp up to 25 000 tpd by year 2003. The air quantity requirement for this mine is equal to 780 m3/s. To supply this quantity, the mine will require five centrifugal fans (one 450 and four 750 kW fans). This study summarises the technical aspects related to the installation and commissioning of two of these fans. The fans were installed on the surface in parallel arrangement with two others. Each has a design capacity of 240 m3/s of air at 2.2 kPa of static pressure. The study presents the installation details from the underground shaft excavation and portal development through fan testing and commissioning. It also presents the results of a monitoring system that was installed to determine the fan duties.

Access to land for exploration, development and mining purposes is extremely critical to the viability of the mining industry and subsequently the well being of society.The mining industry has been subject to environmental controls and considerations for the past 20 years. Today there is greater land use competition and more debate as to its use. To retain reasonable access the mining industry must comply with the rules and regulations by which it is governed.A new set of rules and regulations have been approved for use in Queensland, known as the Mineral Resources Act 1989. This Act clearly outlines the titles available and the requirements to obtain access.There are three main titles of interest to mining companies. These are an Exploration Permit, Mineral Development Licence and a Mining Lease.The Exploration Permit (EP) is for exploration purposes. Applications for EP's are assessed on their content and past performances. An EP is granted subject to a security deposit and conditions. Prior to entry the EP holder is required to inform the land owner of the proposed activities and times of entry.

The current extraction method of the Platinum Group of Metals (PGM) from an ore concentrate and the subsequent separation of one PGM metal from another is a timeconsuming complicated multi-step process. The use of the Chemical Vapour Metal Refining (CVMR) process for the extraction and separation of PGMs is a simple and economical alternative. The paper covers the CVMR process, which is based on the formation of volatile metal compounds, followed by extraction and thermal decomposition into the pure metals and reagent gases. In the case of PGMs, CVMR does not use CO, and hence, the process is quite different from the carbonyl process previously attempted by a number of organisations and test facilities. CVMR extracts PGMs via synthesis of trifluorophosphine complexes at low pressures and low temperatures (80 to 100¦C). These two facts alone make the process highly economical, compared to other methods available. This paper presents a comparison between the process of extraction of PGMÆs and CVMR proprietary carbonyl process for the extraction of nickel and cobalt. In the carbonyl process, CVMR also uses very low pressures and temperatures, compared to those other processes currently use.

Belt conveyors are machines for continuous transport with most applications in mining industry in Poland. This is a result of simple construction and cheap operating costs. But conveying materials by belt conveyors are often in the powder state (eg small coal, gypsum, etc) and during the transport there is a possibility of polluting the environment around conveyor route. A good solution for this problem is the pipe conveyor, where a belt is closed on the route in circular shape and flat on unloading point. Another problem which is indicated in the paper is dusting on the belt conveyor boosters. In Poland a new solution of booster has been designed, whereby dustiness of transportation powder materials is reduced by up to about 90 per cent.
