One of the current challenges for iron ore producers is the ability to respond to changes in ROM stockpile specifications in a quick and cost-efficient manner. The decision-making process to respond to such changes is normally associated with grade-control and short-term mine planning activities, from where new operating instructions to the mine are provided. Mines are under increasing pressure from changes in the industry, such as a scarcity of skilled staff; a higher turnover of skilled employees and tighter product specifications. The quality of operational activities easily suffers as a result of these pressures. The technology that supports operational activities is often poorly implemented, which results in systems being unsustainable and poorly understood by the organisation. All successful technology implementations rely on the people, processes and technologies involved being well understood. Because of the complex nature of mining, the processes that underpin mine planning, scheduling and operational control are often not well defined. This results in activities undertaken by individual departments being poorly integrated. Datamine has developed a set of tools and methods for decomposing; capturing and documenting processes and ensuring those are embodied in implemented solutions. A case study of such a solution is the GEROS planning system, which has been successfully implemented at CVRDÆs Southern Iron Ore System, in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Data collected from payload management systems at a number of surface mining operations show significant variance. Heavily loaded trucks travel slower up ramps than lightly loaded trucks. Faster trucks are slowed by the presence of slower trucks, resulting in 'bunching' and production losses. A stochastic model was constructed to simulate a truck haulage return cycle of 12.5 km at a large open pit gold mine in the USA. For a fleet of 35 trucks, the best estimate of the benefit achieved by a sustained reduction in payload variance of 25 per cent is a throughput increase of 1.6 per cent, within a possible error range of 0.6 to 3.2 per cent. This potential benefit is worthy of further investigation by Continuous Improvement teams at large open pit mines. The model also indicates that, under the right circumstances, provision of an overtaking lane can provide throughput benefits of up to ten per cent, The feasibility of providing unidirectional haulage circuits within large open pit mines should be examined.

This paper deals with two separate case studies investigating the froth phase performance and characterisation of two industrial rougher/ scavenger flotation circuits. Froth phase performance was quantified using a mass balance approach to estimate froth zone recovery. Measured characteristics of the froth phase included frother solution concentration determined by gas chromatography, and the time taken for an equilibrium froth sample to decay to one-half of its original froth height. The latter measurement is referred to as the æfroth half-lifeÆ and is strongly linked to froth stability. Special methods and techniques developed to preserve frother in solution and to measure froth half-life are briefly described. The frother type in the first case study was a mixture of straight and branched alcohols, whilst the frother type in the second case study was a mixture of alcohols, aldehydes and triethoxybutane. The first case study focussed on a flotation circuit treating a low-grade ore containing only a small fraction of floatable copper sulfide minerals, while the second case study focussed on a flotation circuit treating a higher grade complex sulfide ore containing significant quantities of chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite and pyrite. It was found that froth zone recovery of valuable mineral generally decreased down-the-bank of the two industrial rougher/scavenger circuits. Moreover, decreases in froth zone recovery significantly limit the overall cell recovery of valuable mineral achievable from the plant scavenger cells. However, the decrease in froth zone recovery could not be linked to the removal of frother from the pulp solution to the concentrate product in the preceding rougher flotation stages. Measurements of residual frother in solution suggested that, approximately, only five to ten per cent of the added frother was removed into the rougher/scavenger concentrate, with the remainder appearing in the scavenger tailings. This finding suggested there was apparently adequate frother in solution in the scavenger stages.

æMine to MillÆ improvement involves optimising the chain of rock breakage processes from the in situ rock in the mine to the output of the concentrator. A growing number of paper studies and case histories from metalliferous mines (AusIMM, 1998; JKMRC, 1998; Clark and Scott, 2002) demonstrate that generating more breakage in the pit and the primary crusher can lead to benefits to milling that result in significant improvements to the economic performance of a mining project. However, unless the ævalueÆ of doing this (benefit over cost?) can be appropriately quantified, the approach cannot be effectively managed and the increases in blasting and monitoring costs cannot be justified.Mining operations have traditionally been organised into the separate departments of geology, mining and processing based on the specialist skills required and the different professional disciplines involved. Process optimisation across these boundaries has commonly been frustrated by management requirements to minimise the costs incurred by each department without adequate reference to the ævalueÆ being created. Companies have tended to discard positions that provide a technical over-view of the value chain, reducing the number of people with the opportunity to influence practices across these process boundaries.This paper discusses these issues and identifies measures required to quantify and manage the ævalueÆ provided by æMine to MillÆ improvement generated by the intense blasting of ore.

Premier Diamond Mine is planning a new, mechanised, block cave, with a production level approximately 1000 m below surface. A high degree of tunnel damage is expected, due to stress and the relatively low in situ strength of kimberlite. An evaluation of the timing of tunnel excavation, tunnel size and spacing has been carried out to define critical parameters for planning layouts and development schedules. Extensive use has been made of three-dimensional FLAC3D numerical models, calibrated against known rock mass behaviour at 650 m depth, to examine the influence of undercut advance on production level excavations. These were able to represent the effect of stress rotation on tunnels during undercut advance and the effect of an inclined undercut. The analysis has provided guidelines that are possibly applicable to any deep block cave layout. The choice of drawpoint layout is of considerably less significance than the proportion of ground extracted on the production level elevation prior to advancing the undercut. The analysis shows that damage to production development will be potentially severe if it is all excavated prior to advancing the undercut, or is mined directly beneath the undercut face. The development of the main production tunnels alone ahead of the undercut may be feasible, but no breakaways should be put in as they appear to trigger a rapid increase in the severity of damage. The optimal sequence is when all production tunnels are developed at least 10 m in plan behind the undercut, where the induced peak field stress is less than 20 MPa and a maximum support pressure of 100 to 500 kN/m2 is require to contain movement. The assessment showed that the conditions are not significantly improved by increasing drawpoint spacing from 15 m to 18 m. The vertical spacing between the undercut and production level beneath is investigated. Provided production level development is carried out beneath the undercut, there would appear to be little benefit in increasing the vertical spacing between the undercut and production level beyond the current 15 m to 18 m.

Standard microeconomic theory suggests that the behaviour of mineral extraction and processing firms with respect to their demand for water can be modelled and a market demand for water subsequently derived. Such a model, although an abstraction of the real world, should be able to predict the responsiveness of quantity of water demanded to change in price, and, change in demand to a range of factors including: expectations about reliability of supply, changed commodity prices for mineral production, and change in water technology and storage at mine site. This paper demonstrates that the price of water is particularly responsive to changes in demand and that although price increases would result in some additional supplies, physical constraints on supply suggest that the industry will be paying considerably higher prices for water in the future. It is recommended that the mining industry undertakes quantification of possible price increases to position itself to minimise the impact on their operating costs as well as to make responsible capital investment decisions to facilitate future expansion or commissioning of new mines. Substantial investment is required to commission a new mining venture with expected rates of return subject to risk and uncertainty due to fluctuations in world commodity markets as well as reliability of secure supplies of inputs. If a reliable supply of water was subject to uncertainty and water was a critical input for production, then the initial mine design would typically consider a range of production decisions contingent on levels of uncertainty with respect to water supply. These states or sets of water supply, will affect production decisions and future water demand. Modelling production decisions contingent on different states of nature, termed the state-contingent approach, provides a number of insights about producer behaviour under uncertainty. This paper investigates the assumptions underlying the derivation of the market demand for water by the mineral resource industry and identifies the drivers of demand and the responsiveness of the industry to change in price and supply, particularly in relation to capital investment in water-use technologies. The usefulness of these models to the mining industry is considered by reference to the increasing demand for water by the industry in Queensland, in a climate of water shortages.

The drilling and evaluation of bore cores provides the best available statistical basis for characterizing a coal prospect. Important, long-term decisions by management frequently must be based on the results. The majority of coal mined presently is used for steam raising or the production of metallurgical coke. Common bore core tests and analyses appropriate to this usage can be cate- gorized as non-destructive, chemical, physical, petrographic, caking/plastometric and propert- ies of non-coal material. The major tests within each category are described. Certain specific information from the bore cores is required by the coal geologist, mining engineer, coal preparation engineer and the user, either individually or as a group. The optimal bore core evaluation test pro- gramme is the one which satisfies the needs of all the professional disciplines with the grtatest speed and at minimal cost. The principal steps in such a programme are listed. There is an urgent need for a bold new Australian standard to provide the necessary guidelines to an industry which at present lacks uniformity in its approach to the task.

As the mining industry faces times of change, new challenges arise to ensure raw material supply for the younger and future generations. Different scenarios are currently shaping the way we mine and teach mining engineering. Led by an increasing demand for raw materials, net zero requirements for improving long-term operation performance, technological advancements such as automation and digitalisation, safety improvements, environmental considerations and a need for social acceptance, mining is pursuing to change and adapt to these requirements at a faster pace. Such changing times raise new concerns, one of the most relevant is the lower number of students interested or enrolling in mining engineering and related fields leaving mining engineering as one of the less preferred career options between the younger generations. Nonetheless, it is essential to continue addressing and supplying the skill sets that is suited to contemporary and future of the mining industry. To this end, globally, academia is currently undergoing several initiatives such as curricula updates and adaptation, up skilling, improving teaching practices and techniques, including e-learning techniques, enhancing industry-academia and inter-university collaboration, and much more

Thank you and good morning. I am delighted to be here and to see so many of my colleagues and competitors. The general topic of this week's conference - World's Best Practice in Mining and Processing - suggests a focus on mining and processing. I am somewhat of a `jack of all trades and a master of none'. But I'm not even a jack when it comes to mining and processing technology and practices, and so I will leave those topics to speakers better 'qualified than I. Instead, what I would like to do is give you my thoughts on the best management practices of mining. You see, the times are changing for the mining business. There is great uncertainty in our industry. Anyone who received their education in an English-speaking school probably remembers the famous poem `Invictus' by William Ernest Henley. The two most famous lines from that poem are, if you remember, `I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul'. The fact of the matter is that the metals industry, including the copper industry, is not the master of its fate. To a great extent we're at the mercy of forces over which we have little control, such as the world economy or political situations in individual countries. The copper industry is like a surfer at Manly - we can't influence where the wave is going; all we can do is stay in front of the curl and on our board. Historically, discovering, developing and processing ore reserves were the primary facets of our capital intensive business. To stay competitive today, we must invest equally in intellectual capital - our employees - in order to succeed in the face of economic, regulatory and political challenges and global competition (Schonberger, 1986). Everyone seems to have a different theory about being competitive. A lot of people use sports analogies when talking about competition. Others, like American businessman and former US presidential wanna-be Ross Perot, take a more interesting approach. In Mr Perot's hypothetical corporation, competition is a lot like having a snake in a factory. If someone sees a snake, the first thing they do is create a committee on snakes. Then, the committee on snakes meets and discusses the problem for a couple of years. The most likely course of action is nothing. Everyone figures that the snake hasn't bitten anyone yet, so they just let him crawl around the factory floor. Perhaps a vice president of serpentine affairs is appointed to continue watching the snake - making sure it doesn't grow. Ross Perot sees it a little differently. In his corporate world, business needs to build an environment where the first guy who sees the snake kills it. Of course in our industry, we better make sure the snake isn't on an Endangered Species List before we go after it! I am not going to talk about competition and competitive forces in terms of sports or snakes, but I would like to share some thoughts with you about how the mining industry can better utilise competitive thinking to get ahead and stay there. Proton microprobe and electron microprobe analysis are being used in combination for in situ determination of the trace element contents of oxide, sulphide and silicate minerals in a sample of the Merensky Reef. Initial results indicate that chromites contain only Ni, Zn, Ga, Zr ar d Nb. Platinum-group elements, if present, are at concentrations less than 2 to 6ppm. Ru, Rh and Pd are the only platinum group elements to be consistently detected in the sulphides. PentLindite is the most important host for these elements with the concentration of these elements being dependant upon the mineral association in which it occurs

To construct the accessing railroad line to the northern portal of Seikan Undersea Tunnel, nine tunnels amounting 7.4km in their total length were excavated through soft mudstones of young- er tertiary era with use of smaller-sized mechanic al excavators. Rocks were classified in four classes to which the tunnel support was designed respectively. Of several combinations of driving equipments stu- died comparatively, the method using the mechani- cal excavators was estimated to be the best choi- ce. The efficiency of the excavator was traced in every construction section and the data colle- cted was reviewed numerically. The result showed that the efficiency of the excavator dropped wh- ere the rocks were as hard as over 200kg/crif for compressive strength. And a few technigues in tunnelling i.e. contr- olling dusts in shotcreting, lattice arch, evaluati- ng measured deformations were tested and review- ed too.

The Maddingley brown coal seam at Bacchus Marsh, where mined and bored, tends on the whole to a higher content of volatile matter than the Latrobe Valley brown coals, and this masks the presence of lignitic or earthy coal bands in the bore core analyses. Visits to the Lucifer Open Cut, at Bacchus Marsh, during 1948, revealed, however, a banded condition in the coal seam, as shown in Fig. 1. This banding showed in a face that had been exposed for a considerable period of time, permitting partial drying out and oxidation of the surface coal. The bands consist of different coal types, ,comparable with those found in the Yallournand Latrobe brown coal seams(l).The' light coloured bands in Fig. 1 consist of a buff to light-brown earthy coal of low specific gravity, that closely resembles the pollen coal, that occurs, as similar thin bands in the Yallourn and Latrobe seams. The 40 ft. of coal above the uppermost of these light coloured bands dries out on exposure to a black, closely cracked surface, composed of small dice-like fragments of a lustrous vitrain-like substance, and in every respect resembles the lignitic coal bands of the Yallourn and Latrobe seams.The coal between and below the light-coloured bands develops fewer and more widely spaced shrinkage cracks on drying out, and remains brown in colour and earthy in appearance, resembling the earthy coal of the Yallourn and Latrobe seams.Representative samples were cut of these coals, taking care to exclude surface coal, and analyses were made of them by the Metropolitan Gas Company, through the kindness of Dr. R. Managing productivity and improving efficiency for a healthy return on capital employed have become key mining industry strategies under prevailing tough global market conditions. However, achieving this in a multisystem environment such as a mining operation can be daunting. The field of discrete event simulation offers some relief, giving engineering teams insight into multivariable systems and stochastic processes. It allows for integrated system thinking and domain expertise to be woven into project thinking fibre. Directed system optimisation and therefore improved efficiency becomes possible. Furthermore, capital discipline accrues from optimal upgrade investments. This paper illustrates the practical application of this approach by reviewing a typical case study for a direct shipping iron ore operation. Dynamic simulation was used to establish maximum processing plant capacity under varying material characteristics and identify capital-efficient upgrades for increasing production.The study started with descriptive statistical analysis of existing data. Discrete equipment and system capacities were defined, followed by static plant mass balance calculations to establish bottlenecks and overall static capacity. Equipment ‘uptime’ and ‘downtime’ analyses established system and overall plant availability and utilisation. From this information, a dynamic simulation model could then be developed and initially calibrated against actual plant performance to verify its robustness. Once confirmed to accurately represent existing plant dynamics, system capacity response to variable changes could be tested to ultimately determine maximum plant capacity. Additionally, plant optimisation was incorporated to arrive at optimal upgrade points. Maximum capacity and necessary upgrades were established as a function primarily of feed size distribution. Additionally, the interfacing effects of rehandling feed material to the final product grade and potentially to life-of-mine were established as important outcomes. During the initial development of Mount Isa Mines power was supplied from a temporary power plant situated near the Man & Supply Shaft. The main power plant was placed in service early in 1931 and then comprised two Babcock and Willcox boilers, fired by pulverised fuel, and two British General Electric Company's turbo-alternators of 5,000 kW. each. Both plants have been described by A. F. McAskill in the Journal of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.From 1931 power demand progressively increased due to greater production, further mine development in the harder sulphides increased pumping for mine drainage and additions to mill and smelter until, by 1935, the plant was inadequate for further output commensurate with a reasonable safety margin.Coincident with the added power demand, operating conditions involved a fuel problem which could not have been anticipated. The ash content of the fuel supplied gradually increased from 13% to 16-5%, while the melting point of the ash decreased with higher pyrite content.Temperature conditions in the furnace required careful control to cope with ash formation and slag accretions.Consequently brickwork, excessively stressed on water walls, was constantly under repair, and required suspension periods of 50% of operating time for cleaning and overhaul.Load conditions varied continually, therefore the high heat liberations in the furnace, necessary to accommodate peaks in fluctuating output, resulted in ash fusion.

Since the earliest recorded prospecting of the 1860's mineral exploration and mining in Fiordland has been discouraged by the formidable physical difficulties presented by its isolation, extremely rugged relief, treacherous coastal waters and generally unfavourable weather conditions. Government assistance was often sought by the miners and prospectors but little, if any, support or encouragement was received after the initial period. During the 1840's decorative marble was quarried at Caswell and Dusky Sounds. A prospector discovered and attempted to mine copper sulphides to the north of Dusky Sound (Parks Mineral Beds) and near Mt Solitary. A small Pb, Zn, Cu, Ag, Au bearing quartz reef was discovered and driven on in the granite coast line of Preservation Inlet (Bradshaws Reef) and the ore roasted on site. Alluvial and quartz lode gold was discovered at Preservation Inlet in the 1890's and led to the recorded recovery of 11 000 oz of mainly lode gold. Falloff in grades with depth, thinning and splitting of the reefs and the high mining costs at this location led to a virtual abandonment of the field by 1906. In the late 1950's and early 1960's the geology of Fiordland was mapped by the Geological Survey at 1:250 000 scale, but field work was largely confined to the shore lines of the coast and fiords. In view of the physical difficulties it is not surprising that mineral exploration and mining up to 1970 was limited to the scant attention outlined above.

In the wake of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, evolved AGENDA 21. This document which was adopted at the Conference, provides a global action guideline for sustainable development into the 21st century.Sustainable mining requires a complete understanding of the `mineral cycle', including government legislation, mineral exploration, mining operations, rehabilitation, product use, re-cycling and waste disposal that takes into consideration associated social and environmental considerations and achieves economic objectives.

Six Australian coals were selected to determine their potential to produce, ultra low ash (less than 2 per cent) coal by progressive size reduction followed by density separation and/or froth flotation. Density separation in organic liquids is effective in the absence of contaminating liberated mineral matter which can be removed by froth flotation with several cleaning stages. The limit of cleaning of these coals was an ash value of 1 per cent while commercially attractive yields were obtained at 2 - 3 per cent ash depending on the coal.

In a coal mine there are many substances capable of ignition under certain circumstances, which can be placed in the following groups: ordinary combustible solids, dusts, liquids and vapours, gases, metals and plastics. There are many factors influencing ignition, including temperature, minimum ignition energy, particle size, explosion pressure level, rate of pressure rise, specific energy content and also explosive limit. Not all are applicable in every case. Frictional ignition of methane is an accident statistic of increasing concern and is considered in some detail. Practical measures that can be taken to reduce the incidence of frictional ignitions are considered, and also possible ways of ignition suppression.

Perseverance Mine is a part of Leinster Nickel Operation (LNO), a fully owned division of Western Mining Corporation (WMC). The town of Leinster is located 370 kilometres north west of Kalgoorlie. LNO operates an underground gold mine and mill at Agnew, 30 kilometres west of the town in addition to two nickel mines and a mill 15 kilometres east of Leinster. Both the Perseverance and Rocky's Reward nickel orebodies are mined by open pit and underground methods.The Perseverance orebody was discovered in the early-1970s. Decline development commenced in 1977 and the first ore was milled in 1978. The shaft sink started in 1979. The shaft was comissioned in 1983, four years after sinking commenced. The mine was placed on care and maintenance in 1986 and purchased in January 1989 by WMC.
