Detailed mapping in the Permian-Triassic clastic sediments of the Southern Alps delineates a number of strike-slip faults, both dextral and sinistral, associated with the major Alpine Fault to the west and displacing a tight array of fault blocks. Concurrent steeply plunging folds are deforming early major folds of probable Cretaceous age, and generating schist locally. To the east a major collapse zone has developed along the crest of a Cretaceous anticline, located over an ancient Permian submarine scarp, with a number of small normal faults. Further east, extensive Carboniferous to Triassic rocks of much the same appearance are exposed as horsts and grabens in a large possible extension zone through central and east Canterbury. This may have crept incrementally from Cretaceous from the offshore Bounty Trough to reach the eastern margins of the Southern Alps in the Pleistocene.

The purpose of the Lower Lea Valley Cable Tunnel project is to relocate the overhead power lines circuits, which currently cross the proposed site for the 2012 London Olympics in East London. This was the first contract to be awarded as an Olympic project and is on the critical path for the proposed Olympic Park as the construction of the Olympic village, stadium and other venues cannot begin until the tunnels are complete, the cables installed and the overhead power lines removed. The tunnelling works for the scheme include two parallel tunnels between Hackney and West Ham. Each tunnel is approximately 6 km in length. One tunnel is 4.15 m ID and connects the National Grid substations. The other is 2.82 m ID and connects the EDF Energy substations. The tunnels were constructed through mixed ground using four earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines. These were driven simultaneously from two drive shafts within a single site. The 12 km of main tunnels were constructed within a year from start to finish, with completion in June 2007. The shafts range between 6 m and 15 m ID. These were constructed using a combination of caisson sinking and underpinning techniques. Dewatering was adopted to suit the groundwater conditions.Other works include the design and construction of the head house buildings, cable and ventilation culverts, mechanical and electrical (M&E) installations and all associated works. In addition to the above, a further 1 km of tunnel and two shafts were added to the project scope connecting the EDF Energy tunnel to the substation at Bow. These additional works provided further challenges to the project to ensure that these works were constructed within the program constraints for the 2012 London Olympics. This involved refurbishing one of the tunnel boring machines from the main EDF Energy tunnel drives and relaunching the machine to construct the Bow tunnel. The Bow tunnel was constructed within two and a half months, with the tunnel boring machine breaking through in August, ahead of schedule. The main challenge presented by this project is the program constraints. This project outlines the requirement for team work between the client, stakeholders, contractor and designer in order to provide program certainty. A close working relationship between the contractor and the designer is required to provide value engineered, time-saving solutions to mitigate the risks associated with the design and construction program.

In tunnel construction or other underground construction, a detailed knowledge of the rock mass ahead of the face is essential for both safety and efficiency of work. Many tunnel collapses have been reported to occur because of lack of appropriate information, such as the geological conditions ahead of the tunnel face. One of the methods which can identify rock mass conditions is the application of drill monitoring data obtained from blasting drill holes, which can detect abrupt and unexpected changes in ground conditions, geological structure and the mechanical and physical properties of rock mass. This paper presents a new approach to how drill performance parameters can be used for prediction of geological conditions ahead of tunnel face. The predictions are based on monitoring the drill parameters of instantaneous advance speed, torque and tool pressure. In order to assess conditions ahead of tunnel face, tunnel seismic profiling (TSP) and a horizontal boring investigation were undertaken and the obtained data compared to the drilling data. The predicted results using drilling performance parameters correlated well with geological conditions ahead of tunnel face.

Field instrumentation was installed to monitor ground and lining behaviour during and after construction of the Mount Shaughnessy Tunnel (Rogers Pass Short Tunnel) in Canada. The instrumentation was placed in a soft ground section of the tunnel at its crossing with the Trans Canada Highway. The tunnel was excavated through a dense bouldery soil. Presentation of the field data and inter- pretation of the tunnel performance from a geological-geotechnical point of view form the basis of this paper. The loss of ground due to the tunnel excavation was found to be exceptionally small. This has been attributed to the unusually high strength and stiffness of the host soil. Evaluation using the Boundary Element Method, together with a simplified analytical technique, were applied to assess the relevant soil parameters and their influence on the tunnel performance.

As a prelude to studying the sorption desorption and permeability behaviour of coal cores in a triaxial stressing rig using sorb- able gases, the air permeability of typical cores was measured. Lump coal samples were obtained from three gas-troubled collieries in Queensland and New South Wales. These were cored in the laboratory and a simple laboratory permeameter employed which accepted 38 x 40 mm cores in a thick rubber sheath. Air pressure of 500 kPa was applied outside the sheath to provide suitable sealing between the rubber and the coal. Differential driving pressures up to 100 kPa were employed and the air flow measured by displacement of water columns in inverted graduated cylinders. Flow measurements accurate to + 2% could thereby be achieved. Coal lumps were cored both parallel and perpen- dicular to the bedding plane, and were observed prior to measurement for any notable features, in particular for the presence of fissures. Subsequent to large scale trials in 1987, the installation of a submerged lance Sirosmelt furnace system was approved in late-1988 for the cupellation of retort bullion to dore silver. Commissioning work commenced in June 1990. During the process air is lanced into a molten slag bath contained in a cylindrical vessel to rapidly oxidise the granulated feed bullion from 15 - 25 per cent silver to rough dore grade. The process is now an integral part of the Precious Metals operation replacing the first stage reverberatory cupellation furnaces to achieve productivity improvements, lower silver inventory and increased silver Recovery.

The ore body at Elura contains fine grained galena and sphalerite in a matrix which is mostly pyrite. A differential flotation circuit concentrates lead and silver in the first section and zinc in the second. The lead section, shown in figure 1, was sampled in detail previously and the metallurgical performance assessed on a size by size basis. That assessment took no account of liberation and given the fine grained nature of the ore body, this could lead to an incomplete picture of the flotation performance. Liberation measurements were made using the QEM*SEM system on four size fractions of samples taken from seven different streams in the lead section. Using the mineral flows obtained from the mass balance around the lead section an excellent liberation balance was obtained which enabled the effect of liberation on the flotation performance to be assessed. The measurements indicated that only 17 per cent of the galena and 28 per cent of the sphalerite in the flotation feed was liberated. On the other hand 31 per cent of the gangue iron sulphides were liberated. The final concentrate was largely composed of locked galena and locked iron sulphides with 85 per cent of the product being locked. There was a small but significant fraction of liberated pyrite.

The use of monitors to assess equipment performance is carried out on a routine basis in many industries. The benefits gained through process control in knowing exactly how the equipment is working far outweigh the initial capital costs of the monitor. In the mining industry several dragline monitors have been developed and installed on equipment through out the world, but to date none has been fully accepted by the industry. This paper describes the use of a sophisticated monitoring system which incorporates an onboard processor to assess both dragline and blast performance. The results of a case study are presented and an indication of the potential of the monitoring system to optimise mine production is given.

This paper examines the properties of Australian indigenous crude oil and the changes to Australian refinery process- ing required after the Gippsland crude finds in the late '60s. In addition the paper details the dif- ferent crudes available to Australian ref ineries and the relative product yields in relation to Australian crudes. Market demand for petroleum products both now and in the future is then related to the products yields. The paper also examines the impact of the OPEC induced crude price spiral and the subsequent changes in refinery engineering, current and projected market demands, and energy conservation measures both inside and outside the industry.

Cannington is a Broken Hill type deposit discovered by BHP Minerals, now BHP Billiton, in 1990. The deposit is located south east of Cloncurry, Queensland, Australia. The deposit occurs in the Eastern succession of the Mount Isa Inlier within the Soldiers Cap Group. The mineralisation is interpreted to be confined to two limbs of a synform wrapped around a core amphibolite. The silver, lead and zinc mineralisation is zoned within silicic and mafic units. There is a strong association between silver and lead. The combination of mafic and silicic zoning, differing relative grades of silver, lead, zinc and iron, the relative position of the mineralisation on the synform limbs and differing metallurgical performances have resulted in the identification of ten different ore types, four of which are currently extracted. Ordinary Kriging (OK) is used as the resource estimation methodology for the silver, lead and zinc mineralisation. This modelling approach has performed quite well for resource reporting and long term mine planning. However the limitations of this modelling technique to adequately provide information on a local stope scale has lead to the geological staff to consider alternatives to this approach. Limitations of the current modelling method apply to both the geometry of the orebodies and the grade variability. Since early-2000 the Cannington geologists have been experimenting with modelling both the distribution of the mineralisation types using Probability Field conditional simulation (PF) and the distribution of grade using Sequential Gaussian Simulation (SGS). This approach to local modelling of mineralisation type and metal grades using conditional simulation (CS) has undergone a full evaluation by comparing grades estimated for stopes using both the (OK) resource model and conditional simulation (CS) models. The mine planning staff have used the CS derived models, and have found improvements in grade predictions over the currently utilised Ordinary Kriging û derived resource model.

Mount Isa mine is the largest underground mine in Australia and is located 2,000 kilometres north-west of Brisbane. This mine has been in continuous operation since 1931 and in 1986/87 the silver/lead/zinc stream achieved the peak annual mining rate of 4.7 million tonnes. At present about fifteen different steeply dipping stratiform orebodies are being mined to maintain an annual production rate of around 3.0 million tonnes. Out of these, only two orebodies (2 & 5) are amenable to sub level open stoping (SLOS) type bulk mining methods. This year only 150,000 tonnes are scheduled from pillars and remnant areas but in future, more sources will be required to meet the budget production targets.

A number of hydrometallurgical treatment methods are being developed to extract copper from chalcopyrite flotation concentrate including microbial leaching and ferric sulfate leaching. However, chalcopyrite is difficult to process efficiently by hydrometallurgical methods as it exhibits slow reaction kinetics. Comparative leaching tests do not always satisfactorily explain or predict observed copper recovery, acid consumption, or differential leaching of minerals. This is especially true when reactive gangue constituents are present. The aim of this study was to determine how the leaching regime (microbial versus ferric sulfate) affects both the extraction of copper and residue mineralogy. Chalcopyrite flotation concentrate was leached at 30¦C and 65¦C using a pure culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and a mixed consortium of thermophiles, respectively. In addition, the concentrate was leached at the same temperatures using 0.1 M ferric sulfate. Microbial leaching of chalcopyrite extracted more copper than ferric sulfate oxidation of chalcopyrite at 30¦C, demonstrating that the microbes promoted the solubilisation of copper at this temperature. This result was confirmed by leach solution analyses and residue analysis using quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD). More chalcopyrite was oxidized with ferric sulfate at 65¦C than at 30¦C (as expected). QXRD confirmed that pyrite reacted during ferric sulfate leaching at 65¦C but was relatively unreactive during lower temperature leaching. The high ferric ion concentration in the ferric sulfate leach at 65¦C led to significant precipitation of jarosite. This phase was only detected in small amounts at 30¦C in both the microbial and ferric leached residues. Sulfur also precipitated in the ferric leaching at 65¦C whereas no sulfur was detected in the microbial leached residue. Quartz was a relatively unreactive mineral phase regardless of the leaching medium and temperature. QXRD analysis indicated the residue mineralogy differed with different leaching regime.

Optimisation and sensitivity analysis of final pit limits is now an accepted procedure for open pit planning studies. Tools to assist the design engineer in an underground metalliferous mine to make optimal choices for the selection of major development, stope geometry and cut-off grade analysis have not been available. The engineer has had to rely on experience and a limited analysis of design alternatives. A new tool called the `floating stope' has been developed to define the optimal (boundary) limit for material that can be economically extracted by underground stoping methods. The method is analogous to the `floating cone' method of open pit optimisation. The geology and mineralisation are modelled as a regular or subcell block model. Included in the model are structural and geotechnical features, and any previously mined out areas. Inputs to the procedure include the minimum stope dimensions, cut-off grade, stope head grade, and the way in which dilution is to be calculated. The optimisation procedure can be directed to maximise ore tonnes, grade, contained metal or the economic (dollar) value of material mined. The procedure can be applied at each stage of mine evaluation and design to assist with preliminary resource appraisal, selection of stoping methods, and detailed mine design. As with open pit optimisation procedures, manual intervention by an experienced engineer is required to produce practical and detailed designs. This practical design should follow the optimised design as closely as possible. The paper outlines the algorithms used in the definition of the stope envelope, and describes the analysis and results of several case studies where the optimisation procedure has been applied.

In the course of the development of the Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) in the 1980s an expression was introduced in the public discussion on environment and development that influenced the international and national policies of the last 20 years in all areas: sustainable development. The UN decided in 1992 to implement a program with the Agenda 21 which contains the demand for developing indicators for sustainable development. In this context an indicator is understood as a quantitative or qualitative measure that can be measured or described throughout time and which moreover is able to depict the current status and changes. In order to enable for a simple holistic assessment of sustainable development, highly aggregated indicators are required, which integrate the criteria identified as relevant within a framework to be defined. In the presented paper, sustainability indicators for the mining industry are developed that account for the allowances of the sustainable development concept and the Agenda 21. The indicators are quantifiable and traceable through time so that developments can be traced and assessed. Furthermore, the indicators account for the multidimensional aspect of sustainable development. They are designed to allow for the integration of several dimensions in one indicator. The premises that are underlying the development of the indicators are the minimisation of negative impacts on the environment and society while simultaneously considering the maximisation of social and economic factors. Moreover, the participative momentum that is part of the sustainability idea is safeguarded in explicitly integrating the social acceptance of certain measures into the assessment. The indicators presented are based on the logical combination of statements through the use of Boolean algebra. Starting with basic statements for which the logical value is oriented on the sustainability paradigm, complex multidimensional statements can be constructed and assessed.

To those who have been engaged in the construction of mining and metallurgical plants during the war and post-war periods, it is quite unnecessary to point out the large increases and violent fluctuations in prices of basic commodities and the steady and persistent rise in labour costs. It may, however, be of interest to present these facts in graphic form, and survey the relative heights of the various maxima and the lead and lag of individual waves. Since Descartes demonstrated for us moderns the analogy between geometric form and algebraic statements, the two-dimensional graph has found widespread application. Mathematicians have developed for our information, if not for our confusion, the triangular diagram and the solid three-dimensional figures, which have proved so useful, at least in the hands of the metallurgists at Port Pirie. The model (Plate 1.) which is exhibited here does not pretend however, to indicate the connection between any three inter-related variables, and it is not proposed to burden members with any abstruse mathematical expression for the irregular surface of the blocks. While time is an ordinate common to all sections of the model, each illustrates separately the variation in cost of some particular quantity between the years 1914 and 1922. It is an easy matter to record such individual variations, but it would be an impossible task to state any equation describing accurately the dependence ot the prices, say, of hardwood or of galvanized iron upon that of labour at any particular point of time. The cost of living curve, which has attained such prominence, if not notoriety, in the last few years, is the result of an attempt to show the mass-effect of the components. It is the difficulty found in "assigning the correct weight to the separate items which makes the aggregate curve somewhat misleading at times.Turning to the model, it will be noticed that each section consists of half a dozen pegs.. The first in each row,that coloured red, represents the cost of some particular quantity, such as bricks, timber or coal, at Broken Hill in 1914. Since its formation in Papua New Guinea and raising of A$2 million in 1980, Niugini Mining Limited (NML) has grown to a company capitalised on the Australian Stock Exchange at about A$350 million. In 1995 the company produced some 237 000 ounces of gold, 700 000 ounces of silver and nearly 5000 tonnes of copper from its operations at Red Dome, in North Queensland and San Cristobal in The Atacama Desert of Northern Chile. This production contrasts with Niugini Mining's first mining venture at Mt Victor in the Eastern Highlands of PNG which yielded 20 000 ounces of gold and 11 600 of silver between 1987 and 1989. Following the formation of an exploration joint venture in 1982 with Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Ltd, now a subsidiary of RTZ, Niugini Mining's early recognition of the gold potential of volcanic rocks at plate margins led to discovery of the Lihir deposit in July 1982. This deposit containing about 42 million ounces of gold in resources, is one of the largest undeveloped gold deposits in the world. Following raising of equity funds through the float of Lihir Gold Ltd and debt finance in 1995, construction of the mine at a cost of US$673 million is now underway with first full-scale production at approximately 600 000 ounces of gold per year expected in early- 1998.

Western Mining Corporation (WMC), managers of the Windarra Nickel Project, installed a raise-bored haulage shaft and underground crushing system at the Mt Windarra Nickel Mine in 1982. The system is the second of its type installed by WMC, the first being at the Otter Juan Mine in Kambalda in 1976/77. Both haulage systems became necessary as a result of the increasing production limitations, and escalating costs of a deep decline mine.The Windarra haulage system required a single 3 m diameter vertical raise drill hole, 470 m deep and equipped for skip haulage. Two five tonne skips, in balance, hoist crushed ore and mullock to the surface, at a design rate of 200 tonne/hr, effectively reducing truck haulage leads by up to 50 per cent. The system is now fully operational and will enable the mine to achieve its maximum production rate.The raise-bored shaft system has been shown to be cost effective and would be used again in circumstances where raise drilling is applicable.
