DTA curves of synthesis lead sulfide and commercial. lead concentrates during oxidation were measured to clarify the mechanism of ox- idation of lead sulfide. The oxidation reac tions could be divided to elementary reactions with production of basic lead sulfates such as 2PbO PbSO4. An existance of iron sulfide played an important role of the oxidation of lead concentrates. The oxidation rates of lead sulfide were measured in the wide range of oxygen potenti- als using IR type SO2 gas-meter. The oxidation rates under low Po 2 which corresponds to the direct oxidation smelting were much lower than those obtained under high Pot. The combustion temperatures of lead sulfide were also measured by hot thermocouple method. Those values were extremly low compar- ing the oxidation temperatures obtained by DTA.

Ore selection is generally a highly subjective task, with emphasis on producing product with a consistent target grade matching a perceived market requirement. A composite selection criterion ‘Comp’ (a linear function of the grade vector) can be used to maximise ore tonnage at a specified target grade (in Fe and contaminants) extractable from a block model. The blocks correspond to the selective mining units, with grades interpolated from diamond drill hole data. An iterative procedure has been developed to identify the coefficients and cut-off value for the composite function ‘Comp’, maximising potential ore tonnage at target grade.Commonly, target grade is predetermined by marketing; however, there is no guarantee that maximising ore tonnage at a specified target grade maximises the potential value of the mine. If the value of ore could be expressed as a linear function of the grade components, then these coefficients would be appropriate for the selection criterion ‘Comp’. The cut-off value for ‘Comp’ would correspond to the marginal cost of production; all blocks with a ‘Comp’ score above the cut-off would be classified as ore; and the cumulative grade of these ore blocks would be the average product grade over the life of the mine.Unfortunately, no such value function for iron ore is generally available. Methods for estimating the value function are discussed, using the spot price and sensitivities based either upon operational tolerances for Fe and the contaminants or upon published price differentials. This approach has been applied to an anonymous Pilbara deposit with about one million blocks averaging 1.1 kt. It is shown how the optimal target grade, cut-off grade and maximum tonnage can all be explored as a function of marginal cost and iron ore price. Alternatively, given marginal cost and an iron ore price, the effects of changing the tolerances (and therefore the relative costs of the contaminants) can also be explored.It is suggested this procedure can enable informed decision-making for an iron ore mine. Rather than setting final policy for the entire life-of-mine, the method enables target grades and tonnage estimates to be revised by re-computation as the mine life proceeds to recognise changes in market conditions and knowledge about the resource.It should be emphasised that this paper is concerned with ore selection rather than ore sequencing. Appropriate ore selection is a necessary but not sufficient condition for maximising value. Having identified the set of blocks that potentially maximise value, the sequence in which they are mined will present a trade-off between producing at constant grade and extracting high value ore early. The sequencing issue is not considered here. It is shown that optimum ore selection for an open pit mine is independent of any consideration of discount rates, although ore sequencing will depend upon the time value of money if the product grade is to vary across time.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2015. This paper describes how Western Mining Corporation uses sophisticated diesel equipment in mining of shallow flat dipping narrow ore- bodies in the Otter Juan area. Though in most cases the stoping method chosen relies on hand held conventional equip- ment, the 'ore handling systems have been designed to allow for a relatively high degree of mechanization. The use of diesel loaders, trucks along with three boom jumbos is described. A single one in nine decline driven as the means of access to the various ore surfaces at Otter/Juan resulted in the first ore being produced first 15 weeks after the first round was fired in the Ore-Decline. Now, three years later, the.mine is in full production, and in 1971/72 produced 392,000 dry tonnes of high grade Nickel Ore.

The presence of residual cyanide in mine tailings and fill sands may, under specific circumstances, lead to acute and/or chronic cyanide poisoning of the environment and individuals. In this paper, the nature of cyanide contained in mine tailings is discussed, along with the circumstances under which such cyanide would become a hazard. A number of methods for cyanide degradation are reviewed in the paper, with special emphasis being placed on biological degradation (due to its low costs and the non toxic nature of the degradation process itself). Recommendations are made as to the best methods of setting up a biological degradation system, for use in mining Situations.

The solubility of nickel in matte smelt- ing slags, both as oxide and in the metallic form, is predicted using the results of a recent experimental work carried out with lime- free iron silicate slags as well as slags containing lime. Predicted solubilities are much lower than the nickel content of smelting slags, indicating that entrapped and possibly dissolved matte could be the major cause of nickel losses in such slags.

The Canadian Cordillera contains numerous classic porphyry deposits and several unusual subtypes, including the alkaline suite of porphyry Cu-Au deposits and the Tombstone magmatic suite and associated Au¦W deposits. The alkaline suite formed in collisional settings in island arcs whereas the Tombstone suite was emplaced in an active fold and thrust belt in a continental arc. In addtion to different regional settings, these suites differ in the type of underlying basement, metallogeny, and the styles of mineralization. Both magmatic suites were emplaced over short intervals, probably in response to specific tectonic events. In the case of the alkaline suite, the tectonic event promoted magmatic processes suitable for the formation of porphyry Cu-Au deposits. The tectonic environment is less well constrained for the Tombstone suite, but the result was the formation of distinctive porphyry and intrusion-related Au¦W deposits.

The professional geologist or engineer on a mining operation has a particular view of their operation. This is based on the factors of the operation that have a direct impact on the daily work program of the professional, such as production rates and grades. The view that would be taken by a financier who is called upon to support the project may be somewhat different. The value of the operation to the financier is in its ability to generate surplus cash for its owners and thus repay the debts to the financiers, with as low risks profile as possible. A number of tools are used to test the sensitivity of the project to variations in the key cost/revenue drivers. The Financier may call on a team of technical specialists to assist with the assessment of the cash flow and risk profile and to monitor the development of the project. The ability to offset this risk, as all projects have some degree of risk, may be a key factor in determining the level of financial support to be offered.

A Devonian metallogenic province is extended northwards from central Queen- -sland to the Burdekin Basin in the Charters Towers Gold and Mineral Field. Devonian sediments of the Burdekin Basin are intruded by mineralised quartz felspar porphyry which occurs as pebbles in Upper Devonian conglomerate. A mineralised volcanic complex lies on the crest of an anticline in Devonian sediments.Red siltstone is slurried and reduced to pyritic hornfels over folded limestone.A thick wedge of volcanogenic conglomerate overlain by marine shale lies on the mineralised rim of an ocean which suffered cataclysmic changes during Late Devonian times.

The paper provides a structured methodology to investigate metallurgical problems within the operating concentrators. The strategy uses classical metallurgical data analysis as well as pulp, solution and surface analysis to determine the reasons for particular behaviours. The approach applies equally to all mineral-processing operations. To demonstrate its effectiveness a case study, based on work conducted at Pasminco Rosebery Mine, is described. In this work, the classical metallurgical analysis indicated that a significant amount of sphalerite reporting to the lead concentrate occurred as liberated particles. A combination of pulp, solution and surface analysis supported the hypothesis that the liberated sphalerite was recovered by inadvertent activation by lead ions. Laboratory studies have indicated that the use of sodium carbonate, by itself and in combination with zinc sulphate and sodium cyanide, when added to the lead regrinding mill can depress sphalerite flotation, resulting in an improvement in the lead grade/recovery curve. When this approach was tested in the plant other more dominant issues masked any positive effect the addition of sodium carbonate may have had. The plant trial highlighted the real need for additional regrinding capacity.

Artificial ground support has developed into a refined science over the past 20 years. From reactive support systems such as timber props and steel supports, to active systems such as roof bolts and cable anchors, ground support technology has now developed efficient systems that work well in many instances. However this paper demonstrates that there is still a long way to go to develop optimum ground support systems. Some conventional rock bolts and cable anchors emphasise their tensile capacity only, without considering other factors such as their shear strength or shear modulus, or if the support member can transfer all of its support capacity to the surrounding rock. Examples are given of the use of ground anchors with high tensile and shear capacity in underground coal mining as well as examples of slope failures in open pits where the cable bolts have remained intact because they have been unable to transfer their full capacity to the surrounding weak rock mass. For underground coal mines, speed of installation is also of primary concern, but it must also have high tensile and shear capacity both in terms of strength and stiffness. Ground support systems of the future must therefore address these problems. An innovative new rock bolt is discussed which goes some way towards solving these problems. This new rock bolt is screwed into the rock and thus has a direct mechanical interlock with the rock. Initial field results show that it has an extremely high anchor capacity and can be fully installed in approximately 30 seconds. It has considerable capacity to improve the productivity of the coal mining industry.

The categories of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves that may be used for public reporting in Australasia are defined in the current JORC Code (2004). Most internationally accepted codes emphasise the principles of transparency, materiality and competence in classifying resources. They also provide some guidance in considering the impact of data quality. There is no method recommended in the JORC Code to classify a Mineral Resource into the allowed categories of Measured, Indicated and Inferred for public reporting. A clearly defined procedure is desirable for many reasons, including consistency, repeatability and auditability. The demonstrated use of geological knowledge in the classification method is desirable. In deposits with abundant historical data there can be large variations in data type and quality. Quantification of the error of the estimates may also be considered. Ways to formally incorporate such information into the resource classification process are presented as a first step towards establishing an objective, repeatable methodology that allocates resources into appropriate categories based on defined criteria of accuracy and precision.

A new bench blast design method and its realization with the assistance of the computer is introduced. The basic design principle is to define a rhomb cell, called fully- fractured zone, through a series of full scale bench crater tests and apply this geometric pattern in multi-hole, multi- row blast design. To illustrate the design method, the optimization process and assessment of blast performance are presented in the context of a case study.

Peko Mines N.L. has considerable experience in the treatment of a wide range of comparatively small orebodies.Gold-silver, bismuth, and sulphide and oxide copper ores are treated under difficult geographical conditions.Treatment of these ores is complicated by some unusual metallurgical factors.Metallurgical operations are described, including the treatment of the gold-bismuth-copper ore from Juno. The new Warrego mine is to have a highly instrumented concentrator by December 1971. Autogenous grinding is being considered.

As the mining sector increasingly embraces the sustainability agenda, and implements thorough environmental reporting in support of its case for a continued æsocial licence to operateÆ, there is a need for ever-clearer metrics for key areas of impact. It is clear that natural waters are both the predominant pathway and main recipient of the environmental impacts of mining. A new approach to summarising the impacts of mining operations on water quantity and quality is proposed, adapted from an existing generic framework, which is increasingly used to quantify the æwater footprintsÆ of cities and nations. This includes both direct water use and ævirtual waterÆ use, implicit in goods and services used by the mine. In contrast to the existing formulation of æwater footprintÆ, it is here argued that it makes hydrological sense to express the water footprints of mines in areal terms, as equivalent catchment areas. It is also important in the mining sector to capture systematic changes in the scale of impact, which can be anticipated and predictively quantified over the full life cycle. This includes the essentially infinite post-closure phase, during which æremanent water consumptionÆ occurs, either through physical water loss (eg by evaporation from pit lakes) or by ongoing contamination of sizeable flows of natural waters. Methods for assessing the water footprints of mines are now available, and the time is increasingly ripe for them to be applied in earnest in environmental reporting. An example application to a mine in a humid subtropical area of South America is presented. In that case, the mine site itself extended over 106 ha, whereas the maximum water footprint exceeded this by a factor of 27. Although the water footprint can be expected to decline by a factor of ten immediately after closure, sustained evaporation from pit lakes and tailings dams with water covers will gradually increase the remanent water consumption rate, such that the final post-closure water footprint remains about 25 per cent of that encountered during the peak of mining.

Cadia Hill Pit is a gold copper porphyry deposit hosted in monzonite. The pit slope design is primarily based on structural controls related to faults and shears with largely massive rock masses between the structures. The slope design attempts to achieve an optimum configuration at a bench to overall scale, considering economics and safety implications against the geotechnical and structural conditions. To date the slopes have been mined at interramp angles of up to 60¦ over heights of 120 m. Limited slope and batter failures that have occurred are structurally controlled and occur rapidly. The pit-mining schedule requires concurrent mining of part of the final pit walls and the progressive interim cutbacks. Engineering and operational solutions to hazard reduction and risk management issues have been implemented wherever viable to æengineerÆ out the hazard and mitigate the risks. However, comprehensive management plans and operating procedures have also played a vital role. This paper details the management plan and the operating procedures that have been developed and implemented to mitigate the risks associated with rock falls.

This paper documents the selection, installation and performance of six, seventeen cubic metre, Dorr-Oliver flotation cells for primary zinc flotation at the North Mine in Broken Hill. The cells were installed to replace fifty, small cells, and despite initial design problems, have per- formed satisfactorily.
