This contribution presents the first results of an experimental research aimed at finding an unified description of the first stages of a rock comminution process. With reference to the case of the jaw crushers and to the specific subject of the comminution law, the tests reviewed and analysed in this contribution have been carried out, at a laboratory scale, on five different materials (limestones, quartzite, serpentinite) at different reduction ratios and feed rates, and accurately recording both total power and idle running power. The analysis of the results has shown that: ò the grain size distribution of the products complies with a modified form of the Rosin-Rammler equation, already found to be well suited to representing the grain size distribution of blasted rock in previous works by the authors; ò observed trends of the consumed power at increasing reduction ratios is steeper than predicted by the classical Rittinger, Kick and Bond laws, Rittinger law representing however a closer approximation of the experimental results; and ò a more accurate description of the experimental results is provided by a modified form of the Rittinger law. Accuracy of the semi-empirical expression has been found to be usually better than ten per cent by comparing actual results with expected Results.

The Ok Tedi porphyry copper and gold mine is an open-pit operation located within the Star Mountains in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea and is situated near the headwaters of the Ok Tedi-Fly River system. The climate is equatorial sub-alpine with rainfall ranging from five to ten metres per year. Mining commenced in 1984 and to-date approximately 500 Mt of waste rock has been produced. A failing waste rock dump system operates whereby the dumps are eroded by tributary creeks of the Ok Tedi. It is estimated that approximately 250 Mt of waste is retained within the upper reaches of the river system. The waste rock comprises both potentially acid forming rock and limestone and to-date the overall waste has been acid consuming. However, the long-term mine plan identifies declining limestone production and hence an increasing risk of acid generation over the remaining years of the operation. A program was initiated to determine the net acid producing potential (NAPP) required (ie target NAPP) to minimise the risk of acid generation within the waste rock dumps. The results from this program provide guidelines for an operational target NAPP strategy to provide sufficient acid buffering across all size fractions in the waste rock dump for long-term ARD control. Implementation of this plan requires additional limestone to be mined and co-disposed with ROM waste rock.

Vatukoula, the Fijian equivalent of gold rock, is the name of the community embracing the gold mines owned and operated by Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd., Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and' Dolphin Mines Ltd. It is situated in the Tavua Goldfields approximately five miles from the northern coast of Viti Levu, the largest island of the Colony of Fiji.The climate is sub-tropical, there being a definite wet and dry season. The wet season is somewhat variable in length but usually extends from December to March, during which time most of the rainfall for the year is recorded.Although the average annual rainfall is 71 in., more than twice this amount has been recorded. Precipitation at the rate of 5 in. per hour is not uncommon and 15 in. of rain has been registered in 24 hours. The mining methods adopted, therefore, had to suit these wet conditions.The occurrence of gold in the Tavua area has been known since 1872, but it was not until 1932 that discoveries were made which led to the formation of the present operating companies. In 1934 the Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd. commenced operations, followed in 1935 by the Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and later by the Fiji Mines Development Ltd., now known as the Dolphin Mines Ltd. The Hikurangi Margin of eastern North Island New Zealand represents the feather edge of the over-riding Indo-Australian Plate at its convergent boundary with the subducting Pacific Plate. Towards the south, convergence becomes slower and increasingly oblique, and sediment supply from the Southern Alps becomes increasingly rapid. In this environment a 150 km wide, imbricate thrust, accretionary prism has grown since the Miocene, uplifting slope ridges and basins and a range of coastal hills. Offscraping of thick, axially transported, trench-fill turbidites begins in a zone of proto- thrusts, which extends up to 25 km beyond the principle, slope-toe, deformation front. On the slope, landward tilted, trench-slope basins are separated by ridges. The ridges ride up on thrusts that sole out at a major decollement. The decollement dips landwards at 3 degrees to a depth of 14 km at the coast, where it coincides with an onshore zone of high seismicity. Beneath the decollement, about 1 km of consolidated, oceanic sediment is going under the margin with the underlying oceanic basement. Some of these sediments may underplate the frontal ranges to the west and geochemical evidence of subducted sediment is found in the volcanic zone beyond. A rapid decrease in the width of the accretionary prism to the north is associated with a decrease in sediment supply and perhaps with a dislocation in the downgoing plate. To the south, the accretionary prism narrows, swings westward, and merges into the zone of very oblique collision that marks the transform between mirror image subduction to north and south of New Zealand.

Primary production blasting at Hamers- ley Iron began with seven inch holes at Tom Price in 1966 and has developed since then to large multiple row shots of 381 mm holes at Tom Price and 311 mm at Paraburdoo. Up to 1.3 million tonnes are initiated in a single blast with the average around 300,000 tonnes. Development can be traced through Anfo, AlAnfo, slurries, various boosters, initiation and delay techniques, hole loading and daily operating practices. A standard practice could be developed for the two mines for normal pro- duction blasts; this would not apply to such common variations as low "paddy" shots, pre- splitting, tight corners necessitating single row drilling etc. Because of ground variation three or even four sizes of drill holes may well be economic- al for blasting, even though this would be off set by complications in operation, supervision, store stocking and maintenance, particularly in Drilling.

DuPont is a chemical and energy multi-national of approximately 90,000 employees. Often regarded as the world leader in injury reduction and process safety management, DuPont operate 140 manufacturing sites around the globe. Conoco is a wholly owed subsidiary of DuPont which is involved in oil, gas and coal exploration.   Throughout this paper I will discuss DuPont statistics, developing a safety culture and training process as well as discussing possible short comings in the New Zealand safety focus. I will conclude with my recommended improvements and issues for New Zealand companies to focus on.   It is very difficult to compare DuPont and New Zealand statistics through lack of compatibility in recording methods and my ability to interpret ACC's Injury Statistics. However through considering DuPont's statistics, and comparing them to your own companies or departments, you will agree they are indeed impressive. I hope that by discussing DuPont's safety philosophy, and possible shortfalls within New Zealand Legislation many of you will find ideas and inspiration which will help you to further reduce your own injury rates.

The iron blast furnace is the most widely used and efficient producer of liquid iron; however, emissions from sintering and coking cause environmental pressure for the integrated steel works. The combustion of coke fines (breeze) during sintering contributes to greenhouse gases (GHG) (eg carbon dioxide) and is a source of SOx and NOx emissions. Coking capacity is also constrained by environmental concerns and economic factors, such as increased coke consumption, and short supply is leading to high prices. Improved coking practices, which result in reduced production of fines, are also contributing to the tight availability of breeze for sintering. This combination of factors presents an opportunity to consider alternatives to coke as a fuel for sintering. CSIRO Minerals has been investigating the use of wood biomass/char as a substitute for coke during sintering. Wood biomass, or char produced from it, is an attractive carbon source as carbon dioxide liberated during combustion can be sequestered back into growing biomass. It has great potential to reduce the emissions from integrated steelworks and improve their environmental acceptability. Harvested biomass/char is also a renewable and sustainable resource and can be integrated with good land management practices such as remediation of salinity affected land. Weeds, especially woody weeds, can also be used as a source of biomass for charcoal, and integrating char production with weed management can help address a pressing environmental issue in Australia. Previous reported preliminary testwork indicated that the use of Red Gum char as a replacement for coke resulted in a product sinter of comparable quality, improvements in productivity and significant reductions in SOx and NOx emissions. In the latest testwork, CSIRO has examined the properties of a range of potential charcoals, and has conducted a further series of granulation and small-scale sintering trials with them in simulated Japanese Steel Mill iron ore blends. Sinter fuels characterised and evaluated include industry sourced coke breeze, commercially available wood char and a charcoal from prickly acacia (acacia nilotica). Prickly acacia has been declared a noxious weed, is widespread in Australia, and is classified as a æWeed of National SignificanceÆ. The results presented in this paper support the notion that charcoal outperforms coke in many aspects of iron ore sintering and factoring in environmental considerations makes the switch to charcoal even more favourable.

Site restoration at the L&M Mining Limited alluvial gold mining project at Waikaka near Gore, Southland is described. In 2000 mining operations started to recover alluvial gold beneath historical dredge tailings over 244 hectares in the flood plain of the Waikaka Stream. The project had an eight to nine year mine life but was prematurely closed in 2002 because of economic considerations. Restoration of the site back to pastoral farming, with shelter-belt and amenity tree, shrub, and wetland plantings is described. Dealings with the landowners and regulating authorities are addressed in the paper.

The economic impact of longwall mining in Australia has been critically assessed to provide lessons for the future. For a variety of reasons, companies investing in longwall equipment in the past five years have generally not achieved an adequate return on the funds invested. The effect of technological innovation must be examined in the light of competitive forces operating in the market. Projections of cost reduction trends in the coal industry have been applied to a world cost model to provide a picture of the coal industry in the year 2000.

The narrow quartz vein deposits at Konongo and Ghana Main Reef gold mines in Ghana were emplaced during the plastic flow cross folding of pre-existing sub-isoclinally folded volcanic and perivolcanic deposits of Proterozoic age. The older fold structures tightened differentially according to their position in relation to the axes of the cross fold pattern giving complex outlines to the reefs in both plan and cross section.Some 4500 measurements of bedding plane linears were used in the resolution of the Boabedroo footwall structure at Konongo. The methodology developed at the Boabedroo mine was then successfully applied to other complex bodies at the Konongo and Ghana Main Reef mines.All mine development, especially stope preparation, of the folded quartz reefs at Konongo and Ghana Main Reef was controlled by the geologist to ensure that the veins were removed with as few geologically enduced hiccoughs as possible.

The value derived by good mine planning is often underestimated as many mines steer their attention to the more immediate and more easily recognised successes made by the day-to-day operational æbush fireÆ fighting. Similar to machine maintenance, the efforts made to quickly rectify short-term breakdowns are well recognised; whereas the value derived from the work in planning, scheduling and undertaking preventative maintenance is not so obvious or readily quantified. Too often the focus of the business shifts to building and supporting an efficient operations team at the expense of developing a highly experienced team of mine planning practitioners that are well trained with procedures and purpose-built tools to develop optimum mining strategies. A resource has an inherent value based on its quality parameters and its likely mining conditions. How well that value can be unlocked is governed, to a large degree, by the proficiency of the mine planning practitioners, as they, essentially, set the foundation of the mine business and the path along which the mine will operate. The importance of having a well documented and procedural mine planning methodology that integrates both a thorough technical and economic understanding of the resource cannot be over emphasised. The aim of the mine planning process is to develop a robust mine design and production capability which can best cater for future uncertainty whilst providing the best opportunity to maximise cash flow into the business. The planning process must be transparent and auditable, clearly summarising the process steps and assumptions made to arrive at a justifiable and defendable outcome. To provide maximum value to the business, the planning process must be repeatable and scalable to enable easy replication throughout the different mines and projects within an organisation. The diminishing numbers of highly experienced personnel within our industry, coupled with the growing pressure to clearly demonstrate that appropriate due diligence has been exercised, means that well documented and monitored mine planning processes using purposed built and innovative tools need to be developed to ensure optimum outcomes.

It is a well known fact that the best method of rock reinforcement is to avoid physical ground support. This goal can be achieved by means of: - Increasing the rock structural strength - Geological definition and forecasting. - Sequencing the excavation - Smooth blasting In many cases however, extra ground support is needed in order to maintain safe working conditions. In an open pit, the structural strength of rock cannot be increased by lowering the pit walls due to economical reasons. Economy demands steeper walls and less waste to be hauled to the dump. The geological conditions can also often be extremely poor and unpredictable. For excavation sequencing and smooth blasting there are good possi- bilities, such as cleaning of the pit walls after the main excavation, arul- ing of long small diameter straight inclined holes, use of smooth blasting techniques and lightened explosives.

In todayÆs demanding business landscape continual change and technological advancement is a given. With these changes there is now, more than ever, a need to ensure sustainable growth in respect of value protection and value adding whilst meeting the pressures and expectations of the societies in which we operate. Traditionally the management of safety has been a very reactive activity in the business, in some cases seen as an irritation and a disruptive process that demands a focus on preventing reoccurrences. This in turn has focused the measurement of safety performance on a range of lagging indicators û æafter the effect managementÆ. Gaining and maintaining a licence to operate is crucial to a sustainable business but as a prerequisite, organisations need to have a demonstrable ability to manage the safety of their people, as well as mitigating the people risk associated with the business activity. A major focus in the last decade has been on the implementation of enterprise risk management programs, where risk becomes embedded in all business systems and processes and the organisationsÆ genetic make up is programmed to analyse and integrate risk management into all facets of the business activity. The management of safety should be no different. One school of thought argues that there are no new accidents, but rather our inability to learn from the past. Others believe that as long as we have an appetite to achieve the unachievable, we will have to continue to push the boundaries, our safety comfort zones and inevitably take risks. Single reliance on highly evolved technical systems, elaborate processes, highly skilled people, safe equipment and safe work environments have shown one thing û they are not sustainable in providing adequate coverage in the business. In analysing a range of factors associated with some of the worst catastrophes of the 20th century, it can be suggested that they were in fact predictable and inevitable and that an integrated approach underpinned by sound risk management systems could have determined a different result. The key to a sustainable approach in the management of safety requires us to look at a multitude of aspects that collectively allow the performance of an organisation to be predictable. To have certainty in the business activities it is necessary to have controls in place that will mitigate the risks normally associated with unwanted events. It is ensuring that human factors effectively contribute to monitoring the planned approach and being able to safely adjust to any variability. In essence this is having the ability to proactively plan for the longer term. The sentiments articulated by organisational leaders echo that safety management is good business. Surely then a good business is a sustainable business, and a sustainable business is one that provides lasting benefits to its stakeholders.

The principles and practical applications of the Mogensen Sizer are examined, with particular reference to the experiences at Coal Cliff Mine, New South Wales. The Mogensen Sizer has proven to be a worthwhile alternative to conventional screening. It has the flexibility and capacity to offer a useful sizing tool, particularly in areas of confined space. The Burragorang Valley lies approx. 95 km by road south west of Sydney and some 35 km west of Camden. It is over 80 km in length and varies in width from 3 km to over 16 km. Geologically, the history of the Burragorang Valley is of interest. It was referred to by early geographers and N.R.M.A. booklets as the largest sunken valley in Australia. This description is incorrect as it is a water worn valley formed by the dissection of an uplift in the south western portion of the large Sydney Sedimentary Basin. Ages2 ago there extended right across the Blue Mountains, a continuous tableland into which the Nattai, Wollondilly and Cox's Rivers have carved out the formation of the Burragorang. This dissection together with other valleys such as the Megalong, Jamieson and Grose, formed part of the eastward drainage pattern of the uplifting tableland into the Pacific ocean. In large companies with mining operations spread over multiple sites, it is essential that consistency between sites is maintained in preparing and classifying resource and reserve estimates. The endorsement by The AusLMM and AMIC of the "Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves" and the subsequent incorporation of reference to the code into the ASX listing rules for mining companies has provided a basis for the consistent classification of resources and reserves. However, compliance with other criteria more or less stringent than the Australasian Code can present some reporting difficulties. Examples include listing requirements for foreign stock exchanges, particular Acts of Parliament that may apply to individual leases, constraints imposed by individual companies on their own leases, and ultimately, reserves for short, medium and long term planning. Confusion can arise when any two or more sets of reserves for the same lease are compared.. To alleviate this confusion, a standardised procedure was developed for the calculation and classification of coal resources and reserves. The procedure which is geostatistically based incorporates a technique called "Irregular Block Kriging" where specific mining blocks are directly kriged. The procedure has enabled those engineers and geologists with only a basic understanding of geostatistics to apply the technique and not feel hampered by some of the complex mathematics which in the past has tended to inhibit and overcomplicate the use of geostatistics. The procedure has resulted in "cleaner" data bases and hence more reliable reserve estimates.

A number of gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, water vapour, nitrous oxide, ozone and chlorofluorocarbons are transparent to incoming short-wave radiation, but are relatively opaque to outgoing longwave radiation. Variations in the concentration of these gases in the troposphere can alter the thermal balance of the earth's atmosphere. Outgoing terrestrial radiation which would otherwise escape to space, is trapped within the inner layer of the atmosphere, resulting in a greenhouse effect. It is estimated that at present greenhouse gases other than carbon dioxide, contribute about 50% to the greenhouse effect. However, in the future, the contribution made to the greenhouse effect by gases other than C02 will become increasingly more significant. Greenhouse gases arise from a wide range of sources and their escalating increease is largely related to an increase in the world's population, an increase in the standard of living of many areas and changes in lifestyle. The effect of increasing man-made greenhouse gases in the troposphere is unknown but it is proposed that it may increase temperature and may modify climate, agricultural response and land use. The sources of greenhouse gases are identified and found to comprise a wide range of activities. The contribution that coals use makes to the greenhouse effect is examined in detail. It is concluded that coals total contribution is small being about 10% of man made greenhouse gases. Envisaged expansion of coal's use will only cause a small increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Whilst developing technology for coal's use for power generation has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from new plants by approximately 25%.
