Commercial explosives range from pure emulsions to pure ANFO, with blends of these providing interesting alternatives: energy is often adjusted through addition of aluminium, or the control of density. The energy rating of explosives is derived chiefly from detonation codes, which are used to derive expressions for the internal energy change of the detonation products as they do work under expansion. While all codes used for this purpose work on the basis of Ideal detonation, it is common knowledge that commercial explosives operate in the Non-Ideal domain, which affects the mode of energy delivery to the environment. However, since Ideality represents the foundation from which actual performance evolves, it is valuable to examine the intrinsic energy release of a formulation before attempting to understand the influence of Non-Ideality. In examining the Ideal pressure profile of fundamental formulations, remarkable correlation has been found with field performance, and this increases understanding of the influence of various formulation modifications, especially in regard to the stage at which energy is released, and the effect on rockbreaking. This work has emphasised the value of attempting to understand and define better the non-ideal detonation process.

KCGMÆs Fimiston Open Pit, located in the centre of the historic Golden Mile, is situated above some 3000 kilometres of old underground workings. These workings, both level and vertical, present significant safety and operational problems in the pit. One of these challenges is in safely drilling void areas so that they can be charged and blasted effectively. Current drilling practices in these areas require machines that can only drill 115 mm holes on a smaller pattern than the standard blast pattern. This results in more time and cost to both drill and charge these areas. Any other method currently available to drill out these areas involves putting operators in a potentially hazardous situation by being too close to the void area being drilled. Not effectively drilling and blasting these areas leads to hazardous situations further in the mining cycle including oversize, large toe and uncollapsed voids. Ineffective blasting also causes reductions in mining productivity and mine to mill performance. In response to these issues, KCGM has commissioned the implementation of a fully remote controlled DM45 blast hole drill rig to drill out selected void areas. The remote system, installed in conjunction with Ausdrill Ltd and GM Mining Electrics, is designed to operate similarly to a tele-remote bogging system with the operator controlling the drill rig from a separate control cabin via radio signals and video feed. This allows KCGM to drill in areas of higher risk without exposing the operators to voids. The drill rig will also be able to drill standard patterns through some specially selected void areas, reducing costs and extra time associated with drilling and charging void affected areas. The remote rig is expected to provide a number of benefits, both in the drilling process and in further downstream operations. Costs of drilling in void areas are expected to decrease with standard patterns instead of smaller patterns being drilled. Safety and operator comfort are also expected to increase through removing the operator from the pit floor. Blasting is also expected to see significant improvements through increased ease of charging void areas (because of larger holes and standard patterns), more consistent patterns resulting in less secondary blasting and toe and an overall improvement in the speed and cost of charge-up practices. This more consistent blasting will also improve shovel productivity, crusher performance and overall mine-to-mill efficiency. This paper presents an overview of the development of the remote controlled system, including modifications that have occurred since commissioning. It explains some of the problems encountered and how these have been solved. Key issues for operational success will be identified and explained with a view to making future implementations easier. Factors used to assess the performance of the remote controlled rig will also be explained in further detail and used in a preliminary assessment of the rigÆs feasibility.

The potential of hyperspectral mineral mapping within a mine environment is demonstrated. Central to this capability has been the development of portable or vehicle-mounted, hyperspectral mine face-mapping systems. Data from these systems were used to detect subtle mineralogical variations and map their distribution across rock faces in a fashion that previously was not possible. In one study, the data usability was enhanced by ædrapingÆ the mineralogical determinations over a three-dimensional æmodelÆ of the rock-face. The eventual melding of the spectral mine face-mapping and three-dimensional spatial technologies will result in a new generation of mineralogical and structural information becoming available to mine geologists, engineers and metallurgists. Specific uses for spectrally-derived, mineral mapping data sets could include:ore grade mapping systems based on either direct detection of ore minerals themselves (eg iron and nickel oxides), or mineralogies that may be used as surrogates for ore-grade information (via various alteration minerals) after a suitable orientation survey; detecting mineralogies that have a deleterious effect on milling, metallurgical processing or have occupational health implications (talc, swelling clays, carbonates, asbestos, etc); selective mining and blending by collecting, processing and displaying such mineralogical images in near real-time to monitor ore grade and quality, and allow the separation of ore from waste during loading operations at the mine face; a mineral detection and mapping capability to assist in structural and geotechnical mine planning applications; and an enhanced geological detection and mapping capability for ore mineral species or alteration mineralogies that may be used to vector further mineralisation, update the existing mine ore model, or provide input to assist in the control of autonomous mining equipment. Within the Woodlawn open pit, Fe- and Mg-chlorites and phengitic- micas associated with sulfide mineralisation were detected and mapped. Subsequent studies using a second generation face-mapping system demonstrated the direct detection of ore-grade materials for iron-ore and nickel laterite mining activities. Satisfactory and meaningful results were extracted from data that were collected under a variety of challenging conditions. However, these non-ideal climatic and operational conditions would be expected under most operational situations in a mine environment. Development of a system using artificial illumination, permitting night-time (and eventually underground) operation and elimination of atmospheric absorption effects is underway.

Utilisation of the InSAR technique for monitoring of subsidence in mining areas, employing open pit and underground mining methods, has large potential due to sensitivity and safety issues associated with usage of the classical surveying techniques. InSAR can also be very competitive concerning the cost of provided results. However, there are a few issues that may significantly limit InSAR applicability for subsidence monitoring in mining areas. The altered terrain topography, involving steep slopes and deep pits, may lead to the layover of radar signal for specific satellite and pit geometry. Also, the highly dynamic character of subsidence induced by mining, especially using mass mining methods, may lead to issues such as apparent heave and ambiguous results. In this paper the authors analyse the above-mentioned issues and demonstrate how InSAR technology was applied, as a supporting system, to monitor large scale and highly dynamic subsidence for a real case study in Western Australia.

Rock bolting and rock-bolting systems depend for success on attention to a number of simple techniques. Failure to appreciate this fact can lead to disappointing results. Careful study of rock characteristics and placement methods can allow a change to highly successful rock bolt per- formance. A number of examples are quoted to illustrate the sig- nificant improvement in results which can be achieved by use of the most suitable combination of characteristics.

The late Carboniferous to early Permian Featherbed Volcanics cover an area of about 3000km near the western margin of the Hodgkinson Basin, in northeastern Queensland. The dominantly ignimbritic volcanic rocks are mostly confined to a single, composite, volcano-tectonic depression, but, along with the associated intrusive rocks, may be divided into two main groups: late Carboniferous I- type rocks and early Permian A-type rocks. Late Carboniferous I-type andesitic to rhyolitic ignimbrites and minor andesite lava crop out in the southeastern, southern, and southwestern parts of the complex, mostly confined to a basin-like depression, or "sag" structure, and are associated with coeval dioritic (and rare gabbroic) to granitic intrusive rocks. Extensive Sn, W and base- metal, and some Au, mineralisation are associated with these rocks, particularly in the southeast. The main part of the complex is of early Permian age, and consists almost entirely of A-type rhyolitic ignimbrite and relatively minor volumes of lava intruded by a peripheral ring dyke of porphyritic microgranite and by resurgent-type plutons of porphyritic microgranite and microgranodiorite. These rocks are associated with sparse base-metal, Au, U, W, and Sn mineralisation.

Geostatistical simulation techniques are used to quantify uncertainty of spatial attributes of interest describing mineral deposits, petroleum reservoirs, hydrogeological horizons, environmental contaminants and so on. The majority of existing methods consider second-order spatial statistics and Gaussian processes, while the more advanced multiple point-based simulation approaches are algorithmic and do not consistently account for the high-order spatial relations in data. Recently, simulation techniques for complex and non-Gaussian spatially distributed variables have been developed, based on high-order spatial cumulants, and make no assumptions on data distribution or require data transformations. In this paper, the previous developments are extended and a new approach for the joint simulation of multiple correlated variables using high-order spatial statistics is proposed. The technique is based on a new algorithm for the decorrelation of correlated variables into factors, using the so-termed diagonal domination condition of high-order cumulants. The decorrelated factors are then simulated using high-order simulation and back-transformed into the initial correlated variables. The decorrelation using diagonal domination of high-order statistics is tested with a data set from a multielement iron ore deposit, and then a fully known two-dimensional data set with two correlated variables is used to demonstrate the practical intricacies of the proposed method.CITATION:Minniakhmetov, I and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. This paper is concerned with the design and operation of storage and discharge facilit- ies for bulk solids handling. It presents an overview of the basic design philisophy emphas- ising the influence of bulk solid flow propert- ies and bin geometry on the flow patterns developed and how these, in turn, affect the reclaim efficiency and the bin structural in- tegrity and wear characteristics of both bins and chutes. The salient aspects of feeder design and operation will be discussed and the need to consider feeders as integral parts of the bin discharge system will be stressed.

Sublevel open stoping was introduced at Rosebery in 1972; most of the stoping prior to this was horizontal cut and fill. Sublevel open stoping presently accounts for 65% of the Rosebery underground production of 560 000 tonnes per year. This primary stoping technique leaves 50% of the ore in the crown and transverse pillars. The methods used in pillar recovery to date are reviewed and comments made on the success of these operations.

Syncrude Canada Ltd operates one of the largest open pit mines in the world at Fort McMurray in northern Alberta, Canada. In 1993, Syncrude mined and processed 131.2 Mt of oil sands to produce 67.0 MBbls of synthetic crude oil (SCO). This represents approximately 13 per cent of Canada's crude oil requirements. In addition to the oil sand mined, Syncrude moved approximately 96 Mt of overburden ahead of the mining operation in 1993. Since start-up in 1978, Syncrude has had outstanding success in improving the safety and reliability of its operation. Much of this success has been achieved by reducing risk through the application of new and improved technology. This improved safety and reliability has resulted in, among other things, very significant improvements in operating costs and profitability. This paper discusses some of the technology applications that have been introduced at Syncrude to reduce risks to people, equipment, operations and the environment. Three specific examples will be discussed in detail to demonstrate how reductions in risk have greatly improved the operation.

In mid-1998 Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB introduced the first member of a new family of drill rigs. This new family, Rocket Boomer L1C/L2C/L3C, is based on modern computer technology and also on what is characterised as information technology. The design of the drill rigs are modularised both in hardware as in the software. This means that the functionality of the drill rigs is upgradable step by step. Added upon the basic drill rig functions are the new options as ABC Regular (known also as Contour Control), ABC Total, drillplan generator and communication products. The main objectives of these functions are to facilitate real quality drilling.

The paper is introduced by some general comments on the Electrolytic Zinc Company West Coast Mines operations. An outline of the geology of the Rosebery Mine orebodies preced- es a resume of the mining methods used prior to the current mechanization programme. The reasons for the introduction of longhole stoping techniques are given together with a brief explanation of both sublevel longhole and longhole stoping methods. The application of remotely controlled loaders within these stoping methods is discussed. A description of the remote control mechanisms, used on Atlas Copco 310 and 511 Cavo loaders, is followed by comments on these mechanisms from both a maintenance and production viewpoint. A summary of perform- ance statistics and operator safety records vindicate the selection of remotely controlled loaders for the longhole stoping areas at Rosebery Mine.

There have been strong industrial observations that clay minerals have a deleterious effect on mineral flotation grade and recovery. However, rigorous explanation on the role of clay minerals in flotation and effective ways to reduce their negative effects are not available. In this study, the flotation behaviour of low quality and high quality coal samples were examined at the Xstrata Oaky Creek Coal plant, and laboratory in fresh and recycled water with high ionic strength. Anionic and non-ionic dispersants including lignosulfonates and triblock copolymers were also tested with an objective of improving coal flotation in recycled water. It was found that overly stable froth was produced in the flotation of both low quality and high quality coal samples in saline water. Speciation modelling indicated precipitation of hydrophilic components which may adversely affect the flotation. Despite the overly stable froth, saline water produced much higher combustible recovery than fresh water without significantly losing the product quality. Lignosulfonate dispersants displayed a potential to improve the flotation in fresh water, but not in saline water. Longwall advance mining is still the predaninant system of coal extraction in the U.K., contribiiting to sane 70 % of underground coal production. Gate roadways providing access to a longwall advancing coal face are maintained adjacent to a rib pillar under high strata abutment pressures and the caving rock mass. It is very difficult to realistically model such access roadways using mathematical or numerical techniques and hence, predict roadway closure. For the past 15 years, a research group in Nottingham University has been engaged in the study of longwall gate roadway stability using observation methods. Gate roadway deformations have been measured in 224 gate roadways and a comprehensive data base has been established. The paper describes the statistical analysis of this database and presents sane. predictive equations which will enable a forecast of the gate roadway closure to he made. Further field work to validate these equations. is described together with an error analysis. The results are very promising and indicate that it is possible to predict gate roadway closure in the U.K. within practical limits of Accuracy.

Analysis of different environmental scenarios and to represent, spatially, of impacted areas is possible by the use of geoprocessing techniques, specifically Systems of Geographical Information (SIG). Through these systems it is possible to create dynamic mathematical models, constituting of a georeferenced digital database and employing the integrated data originated from several sources. In this context, the general goal of this paper is to apply this tool in an environmental analysis of a specific karstic area impacted by mining activities. In order to preserve a limestone site, internationally recognised by its archaeological features, including caverns, lakes and evidences of prehistoric ages, the Brazilian government has created the Lagoa Santa Environment Protection Area. This place is located in the proximity of the Belo Horizonte international airport. In the past two decades exploitations of dimension stones have increased in this area. These exploitations have been done without a mine plan promoting several environmental impacts. The objective of this paper is to analyse these activities using SIG as a basic tool to locate the main mining related impacts and propose mitigation measures including waste and tailings disposal and reshaping of the landscape and introducing a drainage system for the considered zone.

Several styles of copper (Cu) mineralisation are present at Sepon. Large tonnage, low grade skarn and carbonate replacement massive sulfide mineralisation occur within the metamorphic aureole of Permian-aged rhyodacite porphyry intrusions (RDPs). During exhumation and supergene weathering, this primary mineralisation has been upgraded to form high-grade chalcocite enriched zones up to 50 m thick, which comprises the bulk of Cu resources currently being mined at Sepon. Groundwaters remobilise Cu to form exotic accumulations of malachite that are locally hosted in irregular karsts in carbonate rocks, found up to 1000 m from source mineralisation. Khanong is the largest Cu deposit and recent discoveries have been made at Thengkham South, Thengkham North and Phabing. All deposits have formed by similar processes of mineralisation. However, all differ due to local variations in host rock lithology, structural setting, and hydrological conditions. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. At Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold MineÆs (KCGMÆs) Fimiston Operations, located on the periphery of Kalgoorlie Boulder in Western Australia, roughly 7.5 million tonnes of rock are broken each month for the extraction of gold. With the close proximity of neighbours to the mining operations in the Chaffers Cut Back, special blasting techniques and tools were employed by KCGM to manage the blast induced vibrations and noise in this area. The i-konTM initiation system coupled with OricaÆs complementary modelling and analysis tools offered the complete blast management package. With these tools KCGM management and Orica Mining Services commenced an investigation into the benefits of electronic initiation. Prior to the commencement of electronic blasting, initial modelling was conducted to examine the vibration time waveforms and their frequency content, as these were expected to have an impact on vibration interaction with structures such as large buildings and urban dwellings. This work looked at results measured for a previous conventionally (pyrotechnic) initiated blast in the area and compared it to the results obtained when the blast was modelled with electronic initiation and faster timings. The predicted peak particle velocity (PPV) and structural vibration factor (SVF) were calculated. From the results it was concluded that the investigation into using i-konTM electronic initiation system and SHOTPlus«-i blast design software had some real potential to improve blast vibration management on the cut back. The use of the electronic initiation system and complementary software allows intricate timing designs to be accurately placed into blasts. The system has a number of working modes that allow either the precise design timings to be logged automatically into each detonator or to be manually logged where a variation from the design exists. Where such variations from the design occur, the electronic system permits the actual timings used to be uploaded back into the design file. This allows both design and real actual timings to be stored for future analysis or reference.

Brown coal and its char were investigated as substitutes for petroleum coke in the manufacture of anodes for Hall-Heroult cells. The char, which had been densified by several techniques, was made into compacts with various binders and the anodic consumption determined during electrolysis. The results were an improvement on previous work, but the anodes still fell short of acceptability for use in aluminium smelters because of intractable microporosity. Some options for future development have been discounted.

Interactions between structure and lithology in the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone controlled the style of gold mineralisation at the Macraes mine. Large volumes of rock in some mine pits have most gold disseminated in hydrothermally altered schist, rather than in quartz veins. Mineralisation was initiated in the latter stages of metamorphism. Pods of massive schist rich in quartz and feldspar are surrounded by more fissile schist consisting of interlayered micaceous and quartzofeldspathic schist. Later shears have been partly controlled by the micaceous schist, and anastomose around pods of more massive schist. Micaceous schist was replaced by pyrite and arsenopyrite, accompanied by recrystallisation of phengitic muscovite under lower greenschist facies conditions. Gold occurs in sulfides and with microcrystalline quartz formed during minor silicification. Massive schist is locally mineralised along sulfidic microshears which have phengitic muscovite largely illitised under sub-greenschist facies conditions. Mineralised massive and micaceous schists were overprinted by cataclastic shears, with addition of graphite and more sulfides. Mineralisation occurred during a transition from ductile to brittle deformation regimes as the schist was uplifted in the late Jurassic.
