The emerging discipline of ægeometallurgyÆ is not new but is becoming increasingly recognised as a discrete and high-value activity that reflects an ongoing commercial and cultural trend towards more effective mine site integration and optimisation. Geometallurgy involves a quantified and spatially constrained approach to ore characterisation in terms of relationships to critical processing performance. Industry recognition of the need for large-scale, integrated geometallurgical research is currently supporting a major new research initiative. The AMIRA International P843 æGeMIIIÆ project (geometallurgical mapping and mine modelling) is a cross discipline collaboration involving four major Australian research groups; CODES the ARC Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits at the University of Tasmania, a world leader in economic geology-related research; the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) at the University of Queensland, a world leader in mining and mineral processing research; the WH Bryan Mining Geology Research Centre (BRC) at the University of Queensland, which aims to be a world leader in mining geostatistics, operations research and optimisation in mine design and planning; and CSIRO Exploration and Mining in the area of automated core logging. The project is currently supported by 19 global mineral companies. The project aims to deliver fundamental knowledge, tools and methods for more effective approaches to geometallurgical definition of mineralogy, element deportment and texture that can be linked to mineral processing performance and efficiency at a range of scales. Outcomes are improved predictive indices of processing performance that can be embedded in resource block models to define processing domains, which can be exploited in mine planning and optimisation. To achieve these aims the project is involved in a range of technology developments that include more automated core logging technologies, new applications of automated microscopy and development of software-based texture analysis and categorisation techniques. Attributes derived from these measurement technologies are used to develop predictive processing models linked to new small-scale physical testing regimes.

The Broken Hill Exploration Initiative (BHEI) is a collaborative venture between the Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO), Mines and Energy South Australia (MESA) and the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources (NSWDMR) to provide a new generation of geoscientific information to promote and enhance the exploration for, and discovery of, new deposits in the Broken Hill region. The area under investigation (Figure 1) exceeds 150 000 square kilometres on either side of the NSW-SA border and is centred on the city of Broken Hill. N.T. I I OL n. WA 8A I Maw. A major impediment to the exploration for, and to the understanding of, the genesis of the world-class Broken Hill Pb-Ag-Zn deposit is the structural and metamorphic complexit\ of the region. Important objectives of the BHEI are therefore: I. the definition of the three-dimensional structure of the province, 2. the deformation history, and 3. the stratigraphic and age relationships of the rock units. Early discussions between the BHEI partners and industry scientists revealed that new geophysical surveys would be a key requirement to help advance the understanding of the province, especially a contiguous high resolution airborne geophysical dataset covering both outcrop and areas of shallow surficial cover. The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the new high resolution airborne geophysical data and to discuss their interpretation and potential for enhancing the knowledge of the Willyama Supergroup geology.

The chemistry of acidic mine drainage discharging from flooded coal mines is commonly reported to improve with time after flooding. This investigation describes a 18-year dataset of post-flooding water chemistry for a below-drainage underground coal mine within the northern Pittsburgh coal basin (Pennsylvania, USA). The Montour mine is a 5650-hectare below-drainage coal mine of maximum 260 metres depth. Montour was closed in 1980 and flooded to within 38 metres of land surface within 4.8 years. Pumping averaging 210 L/s was then employed to maintain water levels at this elevation. The flooded proportion of the mine (by volume) at full flooding was 56 per cent. The shaft where water was pumped from Montour for water control is located about 70 per cent of the distance between the mine water table and the back of the mine ù that is, it is close to the back of the mine. The residence time (total water volume at flooding divided by pumping rate for control) is estimated at 5.6 years. Time series of chemical analyses show three phases of chemical behavior in post-flooding discharge. In Phase I (zero to two years after flooding), iron concentrations were high and reached their maximum (1100 mg/L). In Phase II (two to four years after flooding), a transition was begun to alkaline conditions, with decline in iron and other solutes. In Phase III (>4 years), net alkaline conditions began, with iron concentrations declining exponentially to 50 per cent of mined volume. This attainment of net alkalinity in this case may have also depended on abundant calcite in overburden extended up to 30 m above the mine floor.

Clays from the Santa Elena Peninsula, south-east of the Ecuador coast, were investigated with a view to identifying their main mineralogical, physical, chemical and textural characteristics as well as their potential for industrial use as adsorbents. Identified as calcic bentonites, two representative samples from the Tosagua Formation (Oligocene to Lower Miocene) were selected for acid activation trials. The selection criterion was based on the greatest amount of clay fraction (<2 ¦m fraction) associated with the greatest content of montmorillonite. For the activation treatments, HCl and H2SO4 solutions of 4, 6 and 8 N were used in a stirred glass reaction vessel with the clay sample under reflux during four hours at temperatures of 70¦C for HCl and 85¦C for H2SO4. Mineralogical analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD), chemical analysis by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), differential and gravimetric thermal analysis and measures of density, surface area and porosity indicated the changes occurred in the crystal structure of the montmorillonite. The acid treated clays were utilised in trials of purification and decolourisation of soybean vegetable oil in a ratio of 2:100 (clay/oil) at 90¦C for 30 min, under constant stirring. After centrifugation of the suspension, the wavelength of the bleached oil was measured by UV-visible spectrophotometer and the bleaching capacity of the clays was determined. The best bleaching capacity of the samples was obtained with 6 N H2SO4 acid-activated clays. The bleaching capacity was compared to Tonsil, a commercial acid-activated clay and similar results between them evidenced the potential industrial application of the Ecuadorian clays to bleaching of vegetable oil.

The Treasurer, the Hon Wayne Swan, has nominated ‘maximising our advantages’ from ‘Mining Boom Mark II’ as the focus of the 2011/2012 Australian Budget. Australia therefore requires a bolder and better integrated economic reform agenda if it is to convert current strong demand for mineral commodities into lasting prosperity that benefits all Australians. Lasting prosperity, well past 2012, will only be achieved if Australia can effectively reverse a decade-long deterioration in the minerals industry productivity performance due largely to capacity constraints that inhibit growth. This requires improving the efficiency of energy networks, transport infrastructure, water markets, health and education services, access to skilled people and by streamlining costly, inefficient project approvals’ processes. The common thread that holds this economic fabric together is the importance of having the right people using the most appropriate technology within the correct policy framework.In December 2010, employment in the minerals sector stood at 187 200; 21 per cent higher than one year earlier, 15 per cent higher than the industry employment peak prior to the global financial crisis in 2008 and 14 per cent greater than anticipated by industry modelling published in 2008. Managers and professionals make up approximately 15 per cent of the total workforce, yet minerals-related higher education programs (mining engineering, metallurgy and geoscience) continue to be chronically underfunded, requiring direct industry subsidies of more than $25 M over the last decade. Also, the publicly-funded Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector continues to fail the industry in the delivery of quality training programs. Importantly, the industry is a key driver of economic activity in regional and remote Australia and is the largest source of private sector employment for Indigenous Australians who comprise up to a quarter of employees in certain locations.This presentation looks at what our industry and country need to achieve to ensure we have the right people for the challenges ahead. **This is an abstract only. Over the last ten years geological and mining software products have evolved greatly. Software companies developing such products have focussed almost exclusively on the development of technical aspects of the applications, addressing geological, ore reserve estimation and mine planning problems. These specialist applications, and the many other new technologies that are being developed by a myriad of niche developers, are an essential part of todayÆs hi-tech mining operations. Technology is also being used in many other areas to improve the mining process and there is no doubt that tremendous advances are being made in all these fields. Yet there is something missing. The manner in which the technologies are used and implemented has led to the creation of many independent and inefficient æislands of technologyÆ where a variety of products from different vendors are used to address different, but related problems. Problems occur with unreliable information, data duplication, data redundancy and transferring data between applications that may be incompatible or even run on different computer platforms. These problems impede the flow and availability of information and hamper day-to-day decision-making by mine management. A solution to this problem is to take a holistic view of all the various technical applications and incorporate them into a single information technology solution. This solution must encompass all of the information requirements of a mining operation and must provide facilities that address much of the modern thinking about mine management, including strategic mine planning, value management, key performance indicators, and maintenance of a mineral balance sheet. Gemcom is developing an Integrated Resource Asset Management System (IRAMS), which is an enterprise-wide integrated computer system that encompasses various applications typically found at a mining operation. The core component of the system is a common, open, industry standard database that can be shared by many users from each of the different departments at a mine. Around that central repository are the primary applications that provide the mine with information it needs to operate. Ensuring that the information is reliable, accurate, shareable, timely and consistent will eliminate many inefficiencies, and provide significant benefits to mining companies. In turn these benefits will lead to significant improvements in decision-making, productivity and profitability for the operation. The initial version of the IRAMS system is currently being implemented at the De Beers Venetia Mine in South Africa. The system is being built around a core repository using the Microsoft æBack OfficeÆ architecture, and incorporates key technical applications from Gemcom, Whittle, De Beers Technical Team, Wenco and JKTech. The benefits of enterprise-wide systems have long been recognised in the commercial arena and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems such as SAP, JD Edwards and MIMS are becoming commonplace in the mining industry. The more forward looking software developers and mining companies realise the need for efficient management of the information gathered during the mining process and can see that the concepts used in ERP systems apply equally to the technical applications as they did to commercial applications. The use of IT in the mining industry has expanded tremendously over the last five years as enabling technology and management acceptance has become more prevalent, and there is considerable room for dramatic growth over the next five years. The evolution of geological and mining software has now reached the stage where mines will yield the greatest returns by integrating the applications used in each area of their operations.

At BHP Billiton Iron Ore operations, run of mine ore from the several Newman Joint Venture (NJV) mines is railed in 12 kt rakes to Port Hedland. Rakes are processed sequentially, with the lump and fines components from each rake sampled after crushing and screening. The grade of ore from the individual mines varies around consistently different means. Although a discrete sample is attributed to each rake, the sample contains some material from the following and/or the preceding rakes due to dilution by ore from the neighbouring rakes during the dumping, screening and crushing processes. Individual rake grades at the port are therefore biased according to the mine sources of adjacently processed rakes. Dilution does not affect the grade of the overall NJV product or the accuracy of port stockpile grades; however, it does limit the ability to use port rake grades to review the quality performance of individual mines and provide meaningful lump-fines algorithms and port to mine biases for individual mines, information that is useful when scheduling ore for mining. A non-linear regression model has been used to estimate the average dilution from the preceding and following rakes. It has been shown that the lump and fines samples for 12 kt rakes are each diluted within the Port process with about 8.3 per cent of the sample coming from the preceding rake and about 3.6 per cent from the following rake. This can bias the reported rake grade by up to one per cent iron. The results of this analysis have been incorporated into the daily grade scheduling system to provide more accurate individual mine grade data and consequently better decision making.

HukkiÆs law is an empirical law, which does not take into account several events of energy loss during the fragmentation processes. Since experimental results are very difficult to obtain, for a large range of fragment sizes, the verification of the law is very difficult. The relation between fractures and fragmentation processes with fractal geometry was proposed some decades ago. Empirical laws known in this context show basic features of fractal geometry, mainly self-affinity and power law behaviour. Thus, in this work a model was developed to simulate the fragmentation process and to check the relation between energy consumption and fragment sizes. The model is represented on a regular lattice. Links can represent pathways for fracture processes. The events of fragmentation have energy given by a probability distribution function. In the model there is no mass loss. Propagation of fractures occurs as self-avoiding random walks on the regular lattice.

The Galandrud coalfield is located approximately 20 km south from the coast of the Caspian Sea, Ruyan town, on the north slopes of the Alborz mountain range, in the elevation between 500 m (the Galand River valley) and 1350 m. For the time being, 32 coal seams (generally of small thickness û 0.8 m on average) have been recognised within the. On the other hand 72 coal banks of balanced properties have been included in reserve calculation, which means that some of the seams consist of several banks. The general dip of strata belonging to the south limb is about 30¦ to the South (with drags close to the south overthrust, where the dip reaches 85¦), while the dip of beds at the north limb is rather steep and usually between 45 to 75¦ to the North. The coal quality is in a rank of high volatile bituminous coal. The steep dip, unstable lithological development, complicated tectonics and comparatively lower coal seam thickness are the characteristic features of the Galandrud deposit. Environmental protection of this area makes exploration and exploitation more complicated. During mine exploration several adits were driven at three levels with 50 m vertical distances. About 4000 m of gates and crosscuts were up to now driven. During mining test the down-cut mining method (with one cut), the strike cut mining method and the down-cut mining method with two cuts were tested. The paper describes outlines for the selection of mining methods on the base of classification of the effective hangingwalls and footwalls, hazards of mining operations, and possibilities of the mechanised mining.

Tracking plant and personnel in underground environments provides multiple potential benefits for a mine including increasing safety, better monitoring of production, traffic control, and in the future monitoring and control of autonomous vehicles. The main techniques for wireless tracking are to use radio frequency identification (RFID), signal strength based techniques, and time of arrival (TOA) based techniques. RFID does not provide continuous tracking and signal strength techniques have poor accuracy in the complex radio propagation environment present in mines. TOA based techniques are potentially the most accurate, but most current equipment does not realise the potential of the technique. CSIRO has been developing the wireless ad-hoc system for positioning (WASP) system for wireless tracking in a range of challenging environments including underground mines. WASP has been licensed for sporting applications and has delivered encouraging results in early trials for a surface and an underground mining application. The system utilises a number of ‘anchor nodes’ that are placed at surveyed fixed locations within the mine, and tags attached to plant or personnel to be tracked. The system provides an ad hoc data communication network, thus wired data connections are not required to the anchor nodes. WASP uses transmissions in the 5.8 GHz ISM (instrumentation, scientific and medical) frequency spectrum to perform highly accurate ranging between nodes, hence tracking of tags. The localisation performance of the system depends upon the radio propagation environment, ranging from 0.1 m in low multipath conditions. In this paper we describe the WASP system and provide results of initial testing in an underground mine that shows that the system achieves high ranging accuracy, hence localisation accuracy.

Citigold Corporation operates the Warrior gold mine at Charters Towers, northern Queensland, mining narrow quartz veins (0.1 to 2 m wide) in granodiorite by long hole open stoping on levels 15 m apart. Access is by decline and cross-cuts with on-ore development drives. The mineralisation comprises Palaeozoic mesothermal quartz veins containing gold, pyrite, sphalerite and galena, hosted by the Ordovician age Towers Hill Granite. The gold grain size is variable from 1 to 500 ¦m with 1 m face samples up to 800 ppm Au, and average run-of-mine grades of 10 to 14 ppm. Despite the spectacular gold tenor, little visible gold is present. Gold grades are highly variable presenting challenges in ore reserve estimation. Tonnages are discounted by 70 per cent to allow for the low payabilities (30 to 50 per cent) of the veins. Estimation techniques allow high confidence in overall global grade estimates but poor reliability on a local scale (25 m). Kriging ranges as low as 5 - 8 m means that obtaining a Proved Ore Reserve by diamond drilling is not economically feasible, and broad-scale mine planning decisions are made at the Inferred Mineral Resource stage and mine design work at the Probable Ore Reserve stage. Proved Ore Reserves can only be estimated after underground development has proceeded through the mineralised body with levels at 15 m vertical spacing sampled at 2 - 3 m intervals along the level. However, reconciliations between actual gold produced and earlier resource estimates produce workable results. A further three mines are scheduled to be developed underneath the city of Charters Towers.

Accurate measurements of the moisture content of iron ore have increasing importance in modern mining operations. Knowledge of the moisture content allows process control actions to be carried out to ensure that the moisture is within prescribed limits, whether this is ensuring sufficient moisture to be above the dust extinction limit or that the moisture level is below the transportable moisture limit for sea shipments. Additionally, controlling moisture within desired limits can allow for greater throughput of iron ore by limiting the amount of water transported. There are a range of options available for operators wishing to obtain moisture data, though there are few demonstrated and proven devices that are able to provide real-time analysis of the full bed-depth of material. Scantech’s through-belt moisture systems are able to accurately analyse the full bed-depth of conveyed iron ore in real time using its unique microwave transmission technology, providing valuable data for operators. Recent advances in these systems have overcome errors associated with the highly attenuating nature of iron ore, particularly for large conveyor belts and deep ore. Furthermore, analysis of different ore mineralogy and its effect on the accuracy of moisture analysis has been examined and quantified. This paper discusses some of these recent results, demonstrating achievable accuracies in spite of changing ore mineralogy. The implementation of robust, reliable and accurate sampling systems is the key to the successful management of any mineral processing plant. The representative sampling of a mineral processing plant is the only way to determine what is coming into the plant, what is going out as fi nal product and what is going to tails. In plants with high gravity gold components, where high recovery effort gravity circuits are installed, the use of a gravity recoverable gold (GRG) sampling system can assist in the online monitoring of the performance of the circuit. The typical installation location would be in CIP or fl otation feed (ie cyclone overfl ow), downstream of the gravity circuit. A GRG sampling system generally consists of the following equipment: true proportional, continuous drive, linear cross cut sampler, secondary vezin sampler operated on a timer, a batch centrifugal concentrator, and sample dewatering module. The operating philosophy of the GRG sampling system is that the primary sampler operates on a continuous basis, generating a constant stream of truly representative sample. Consep's H&S drive system is unique in its ability to be able to operate in a continuous mode, therefore enabling a continuous stream of representative sample to be generated. The primary sample stream reports to the secondary sampler. The secondary sampler operates on an intermittent basis (nominally ten minute interval), resulting in a relatively small sample volume per shift. Normally the sample volume would be ten to 15 L per shift. The secondary sample rejects stream reports back to the batch centrifugal concentrator. The sample generated from the secondary sampler can be dewatered using a Consep H&S dewatering module. This device produces a final sample that consists of separate filter cake and filtrate. These are suitable for taking directly to the laboratory. The continuous stream of truly representative secondary sampler rejects is passed through an appropriately sized Knelson Concentrator, typically a KCMD7, KCCD10 or KCCD12 sized unit. This unit recovers any available GRG from the stream. The Knelson Concentrator is also purged of its gravity concentrate at the end of the shift. This sample, which is nominally around 1 - 2.5 kg of concentrate, is also taken to the laboratory. At the end of the shift the client will have a measure of the gravity recoverable gold content of the target slurry stream, as well as a true representative sample of the complete stream. Through the addition of a Knelson Concentrator to an otherwise typical sample station, it is possible to generate a true measure of the performance of your gravity circuit. This will take the guess work out of the daily variation in gravity circuit gold recovery, as the site knows whether the changes are due to gravity circuit equipment performance, or due to the natural variation of ore GRG contents. Maintenance planning can also be designed around the system, as the site will have a composite sample to measure the performance of the circuit, therefore indicating where performance has dropped and maintenance is needed. With the increasing sophistication of real-time sampling devices for occupational hygiene exposure assessment, research to objectively assess their performance is a priority. Using real-time monitoring equipment has several advantages over established gravimetric sampling methods, particularly their immediate results, lower overall long-term costs and no laboratory analysis costs, which are appealing to the mining industry due to the ongoing occupational hygiene monitoring programs required by the various regulatory agencies.

The Lafarge Marblehead Plant in Marblehead, Ohio, USA produces 4.2 million tonnes of sized aggregate yearly. In 1997, a program was instituted to maximise primary crusher productivity through the optimisation of blasting variables and procedures. A proprietary blasting shot report database and the Lafarge production database was statistically analysed to provide guidance in the program. Blasting powder factor (kg/m3) was the main control variable utilised to increase crusher throughput. In 2005, the program was refined to increase the production of certain high margin aggregate sizes and the reduction of fines. The principal blasting component affecting the percentage of high margin size production appears to be pattern area (burden and spacing area). This can be coupled with powder factor to optimise the production rate of high margin aggregate sizes. The size optimisation program incorporates the blasting shot report database, Lafarge production database, statistical analysis and aggregate sampling. A preliminary indication is that the production of high margin sizes (12.7 mm X 4.8 mm, 24.4 mm X 12.7 mm, and 50 mm X 25.4 mm) has been increased seven to 12 per cent utilising these techniques. As an added benefit, blasting costs have been reduced linearly as burden û spacing pattern areas have increased and powder factors have decreased. The program is ongoing and will investigate other blasting procedures and variables including electronic blasting caps to further increase the production of high margin products. The statistical methods involved in the analysis are described in this article for use in other mines and situations. The methods described can be used to optimise crusher throughput, digging rates and product size.

Visual computing opens the design process to a wider audience and allows rapid communication of mine plans to all stakeholders. The integration of software and hardware technologies that take advantage of a graphical environment will continue to improve both long-term and short-term mine design (Figure 1). A good design must be adaptive to respond to decision changes as the mine develops and more information becomes available. The constraints on mine design predicate careful analysis in order to operate the mine as efficiently and safely as possible.Continuous improvement in mining is assured by developing innovative technologies that target mine survey, drill and blast, modelling, short-term design and pit and stope optimisers. The design life of a mine has to be sufficiently long to ensure the mine is commercially successful, justifying the high start-up capital costs. Being able to execute a plan so that it honours the design realises the rewards of computerised mine planning and the long-term investment in data acquisition.

Time and time again history shows us that mine closures are sustainability failures. Mine operators do not know how to turn the mine closure into an asset and communities around the mine do not know how to plan or what to implement to be sustainable when the mine needs to close. If we want to achieve sustainability when we close a mine, we generally need to consider what economic activity we will have to create leading up to the mine closure to ensure that the communities remaining in the area are not worse off after mining than before. There is not one silver bullet solution to mine closure, as all mines are affected by different environmental and socio-economic conditions. That is one of the reasons why mine closure is so difficult.Effective stakeholder engagement is the nucleus around which sustainability is built. Achieving sustainability as part of mine closure means not only a self-sufficient community, but also could lead to transformation of that asset.A key issue is that neighbouring communities become completely reliant on the mine. The mine has influenced the economic, environmental and social aspects of the community and with no alternative economic sources. The community and municipality will struggle with capacity to maintain infrastructure, services and jobs. This not only impacts the mine workers and their families but also other businesses and people in the town that make a living by servicing the needs of the workers and their families. Social problems associated with a mining operations and closures need to be considered. The misuse of alcohol, domestic violence, breakdown in law and order, economic and health issues all have a severe influence. Families often need to relocate from the mining town to find work. The use of photogrammetry has greatly increased the accuracy of 3D mapping underground. However, this has not reduced the need or desire for geologists to produce plans and sections showing an interpretation of the mapped geology. At the Waihi Underground Gold Mine, a hybrid solution has been developed that utilises the accuracy of photogrammetry and mapping onto face photos with the CAD-based Deswik.MappingTM functions to create plan and section maps. These have the benefit of looking like traditional paper maps but are more spatially accurate and richly attributed with metadata that can be filtered and exported to downstream processes. Deswik.MappingTM is a tablet-based solution that allows the geologist to map digitally with a stylus. Automation is utilised for the updating of survey as-builts, approved designs, drill holes, geological mapping, vein interpretations and mine work areas, reducing the requirement to print out maps at various locations and scales. Having 3D mine software on a tablet device provides a wealth of features not available when using paper: scaling is a problem of the past; information can be turned on and off; features can be viewed in 3D; and measurements between points of interest can be calculated in 3D space, for example, between vein wireframes and drill hole sample information. A suite of custom scripts has been developed that take the spatially accurate, registered and attributed polyline data from photogrammetry scans and converts them to a geological mapping legend with vein textures, structural information, and lithological boundaries. These 3D maps can be plotted in plan or section view and satisfy the requirements of the most ardent paper map supporter.

This paper describes a hybrid ventilation system, which uses secondary fans that also act as de-facto primary fans to extract fresh airflow from the mine intake raise system. Also discussed are the associated problems such as uncontrolled recirculation, inadequate decline airflow, fire safety issues, prolonged blast fume clearance times, high air temperatures in main access routes, neutralisation of mine air cooling by heat from secondary distribution fans, increased ventilation system complexity, reduced flexibility and high pressure differentials (which cause safety issues with personnel access and reduce secondary ventilation system performance).Practical suggestions are provided on options to avoid these problems listed.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2013. Legacy tailings storage facilities exist within operating mine sites across Australia. These tailings storage facilities are often viewed as rehabilitation liabilities but with considered assessment may prove to be a resource. Extraction of such a resource might add value to operations by providing cash flow during the development of new mines; providing supplementary mill feed for existing mines undergoing step changes in operations; and supporting mine closure activities. Hellyer Gold Mines is successfully extracting and reprocessing sub-aqueous material from legacy tailings storage facilities at their Hellyer operation in north-west Tasmania. The Hellyer tailings storage facilities contain poly-metallic material from the Hellyer and Fossey underground deposits dating back to the 1980s as well as material from tailings reprocessing activities by other operators of the Hellyer site. Hellyer Gold Mines is reclaiming sub-aqueous material using cutter-suction dredgers and reprocessing on-site. Hellyer is the only operation of its type in Australia and few such operations exist worldwide. Key learnings around the estimation of a resource for legacy tailings storage facilities have been acquired at Hellyer that can be applied to the assessment of other tailings storage facilities. The application of dredging as a mining method at Hellyer is delivered through collaboration with experts from outside the mining industry under the direction of a mining engineer. Key elements required for the planning and delivery of safe and efficient dredging inside tailings storage facilities have been identified at Hellyer and are presented to provide a road map to the development of other dredging operations.
