The world-class Golden Mile gold deposit in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia is part of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) operation, which is wholly owned by Northern Star Resources Limited. Current mining operations across the Golden Mile is dominated by the large Fimiston Open Pit, which is over 4 km long, 1 km wide and 600 m deep. It is part of a larger mineralised system that stretches over 8 km and includes the Mt Charlotte Underground Mine, which is also operated by KCGM, as well as numerous historical open pit and underground mines. This mineralised system has been continuously mined for over 125 years and is set to continue well into the future. The Golden Mile deposit is in the Norseman Wiluna Greenstone Belt which is made up of a series of mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks that have been structurally deformed and intruded by granitic rocks. There are two main styles of mineralisation across the Golden Mile. Firstly, the Fimiston style, which consists of shear hosted Golden Mile lodes with abundant sulfides and tellurides and secondly, the Charlotte style that comprises younger stockwork veins. Fimiston style mineralisation is the primary style of mineralisation within the Fimiston Open Pit. Historically, in excess of 3500 m of underground development and over 755 stopes were mined prior to the consolidation of the area and the commencement of Fimiston Open Pit operation. Old underground workings, known as voids, are either empty or backfilled and extend to more than 1.2 km below surface. Although they are a routine part of mining operations at KCGM, voids pose a significant challenge for the geology team in terms of planning and executing exploration and grade control drilling, geological modelling, grade and tonnage estimation, drill and blast design and execution, marking up ore block designs, mining, and reconciliation. This paper will discuss the various challenges faced by the geology team due to the presence of voids, solutions used to overcome some of these challenges and the results of these activities.

Titanium feedstocks are the building blocks of the titanium value chain. They can be mined directly, as is the case for ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile, or manufactured from ilmenite by extracting various quantities of non-TiO2 components from the ore by chemical and/or thermal processes.While feedstocks can be grouped into categories of materials with similar characteristics, they are essentially unique products from very different mining locations around the world. In fact, no two feedstocks are exactly the same. As such, the variations between the available feedstocks, in combination with the permutations in processing technologies to turn the feedstocks into titanium pigment or metal, mean that choices between feedstocks are specific to the location in which they are utilised.In this paper, the authors examine the key requirements of titanium feedstocks to the TiO2 pigment and metal sectors. Apart from the well known differences between feedstock choices for the sulfate and chloride process, the more opaque considerations in feedstock sourcing are examined.

The mining industry continues to have major disasters (Bingham Canyon, Pike River, Upper Big Branch, Mount Polley and Samarco), which often have a devastating effect on the enterprise, in terms of personnel deaths and injuries, environmental destruction, and financial and reputational loss. These disasters are not imposed from outside the business or organisation, they are almost always a function of loss of control of the management of the organisation’s critical assets and processes that they contain or to which they are exposed.Asset integrity is discussed as an effective response to business risks in order to mitigate, control and recover from loss scenarios that could expose a mining operation to significant property damage and business interruption, or even total loss. Vital to this process is the identification and control of risks to critical assets. Components of a critical asset assurance program are presented for discussion.Formal risk assessment has a longer history in industries other than mining, eg petrochemical, nuclear, military, aviation and space industries. Risk assessment is a structured, proactive approach to understanding and improving risks, as opposed to a reactive ‘fix-it-when-it-breaks’ mentality. Risk assessment techniques were triggered by major public disasters, such as the Flixborough chemical plant disaster (1973), Three Mile Island nuclear plant event (1979) and others.Today, most industries see risk assessment as an inherent part of their business, but do mining sites capture business risks that are related to major loss scenarios, which could have a significant impact on the operation?Does your risk assessment process:- involve a team having the right skill set so that the discussion is both stimulated and technically sound?- use generic assessment when a site-specific assessment is needed?- fail to consider all possible outcomes, including maximum foreseeable loss (MFL)?- fail to identify all hazards and controls associated with a particular activity?- fail to monitor controls effectively?This paper addresses the issues identified by these questions and provides some direction for developing a risk management process where business risk associated with critical asset integrity is integrated with other business and safety and health risk processes to provide a robust method for managing your business. EcoTechnology refers to a series of potential metallurgical processes for complex ores, concentrates, tailings and slags that are all based on an initial chlorination step at low to moderate temperatures probably in a fluid bed chlorinator (FBC). Examples of the research and development (R&D) results are provided in this paper for a high grade Au/Sb Leach Tailings (EcoGold<sub>®</sub> Process), a very refractory sulphide Au concentrate, a refractory gold calcine tailings, a Cu/Au tailings (EcoCopper<sub>®</sub> Process), bulk polymetallic sulphide concentrates and polymetallic sulphide/oxide complex ores (EcoZinc<sub>®</sub> Process and EcoLead<sub>®</sub> Process). R&D on over thirty different ore types has been conducted at a bench scale as discussed. Latterly a dedicated pilot plant was designed and constructed by EcoTech Mining Pty Ltd (EML) and several of the different feed stock results have been confirmed by pilot plant testing. It is planned to scale up to a commercial demonstration plant. To demonstrate the versatility of EcoTechnology, bench and pilot plant test results on five of the projects are used as case studies as follows: Fosterville ‘leach tailing’, VIC; Wiluna flotation concentrate – BIOX Feed, WA; Wiluna calcine facility tailings, WA; Mt Morgan Cu/Au tailings, QLD; Polymetallic sulphide concentrates from Pegmont Deposit, QLD and Polymetallic sulphide/oxide ores from Commonwealth Mine Project, NSW. Iron formation-hosted iron ore deposits account for the majority of current world iron ore production and consist of three classes: unenriched primary iron formation with typically 25 to 45 wt per cent Fe; martite-goethite ore formed by supergene processes, with abundant hydrous iron oxides containing 60 to 63 wt per cent Fe; and high-grade hematite ores thought to be of hypogene or metamorphic origin overprinted by subsequent supergene enrichment with 60 to 68 wt per cent Fe.Individual iron ore deposits range from a few millions of tonnes to over two billion tonnes at >64 wt per cent Fe, although most are within the range of 200 to 500 Mt. In the Hamersley Province of Western Australia, martite-goethite ores are largely developed in the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, although high (>0.08 per cent P) phosphorous mineralisation is also well developed in the stratigraphically higher Brockman Iron Formation. Whilst the vast majority of high-grade microplaty hematite ore is best developed in the Brockman Iron Formation, this paper provides the first textural evidence of locally significant microplaty hematite mineralisation in the Nammuldi Member of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, in the Chichester Ranges at the Christmas Creek, Cloud Break and Mount Nicholas prospects. Petrographic studies have identified a high-grade Fe texture composed of nanometre scale plates of hematite in mineralised sections of primary microplaty hematite deposits in the Pilbara and elsewhere, well below the normal depth of weathering or dehydration. The population of nanometre to micrometre scale hematite plates is interpreted to represent various stages of nucleation, crystallisation and progressive growth of hematite from the primary ore-forming fluid in areas that were once iron-rich carbonates or silicates in the BIF.

The long continuing controversy over the Origin of fusain, whether it is a product of primeval forest fires, or of special conditions of weathering (including bacterial decay) of the vegetal debris concerned prior to, burial, has now been extended, to include the possibility that fusain is a product of the coalifaction process subsequent to deposition, so that doubt may reach even to its time of formation.The conflicting views on this point are summarised in the following quotations from two recent publications (my italics in each quotation):1. "Recent observations made in peat and brown coal deposits in Australia, England and Germany strongly suggest that practically all fusain is formed by coalifaction after deposition and 'preliminary compression. In deposits of advanced brown coal rank, it normally takes the shape of pieces of wood compressed parallel to the bedding plane; and some fragments consisting partly of fusain and partly of vitrain exhibit the same amount of compression throughout. This would seem to indicate fusinisation after burial, as hard brittle charcoal would be crushed, or else retain its original irregular shape if strong enough to withstand pressure.In some immature deposits, however, where cover is of a hydrostatic nature rather than a vertical compressionar force, occasional pieces of fusinised wood showing very little flattening are present, but such immature deposits seldom contain the proportion of fusain found in higher rank coals. In view of this, and the possibility of introduction of charcoal into peat deposits, it is felt that a small amount of the fusain in coal may represent wood charred before burial, but most of it almost certaInly originated as a product of fusinisation after burial" (Dulhunty, 1948, p.14).

Finely ground beryl was decomposed by mixing with ground limestone and soda ash andheating at 900¦C for,4-6, hours.The sintered material was then crushed and leached by boiling under reflux with 5N sulphuric acid for up to 4 hours. The liquor containing Be, ; Al, . Fe and, other elements as sulphates, was separated from the residue which consisted mainly of silica and gypsum, either' by filtration or by decantation washing.The clarified leach liquor.was first treated to remove Fed}: , by contacting with a primary amine-kerosene solution in2 counter-current stages. The iron free liquor wa,s then passed to a 4-stage counter-current extraction unit where it was con-tacted with 0.5M di-(2 ethyl hexyl), phosphoric acid (EHPA) in kerosene. The'operating conditions were such that at least 99 p'br cent of the Be and only 7' per' cent of the Al- was, extracted The ,B6`= and. Al were ;stripped from the organic phase by sod-ium hydroxide solution of suitable concentration to form soluble "beryllate" and "aluminate" respectively. Most of the Be was subsequently precipTitated a's Bo(OH)2 by-hoating the alkaline solution to 90C, the Al remaining in solution. After filtra-tion and washing, the Bo(OH)2 could be ignited directly to BeO at about 1000 C or used as a feed to further purification stages aimed at producing "nuclear grade" BeO.A small coaAter-current extraction unit was operated con-tinuously using liquor derived from the sintering and leaching stages. Data obtained in batch laboratory tests were confirmed. A product obtained by ignition of the washed "beryllate" precip-itate contained more than'99 per cent BeO.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Disseminated, gold-bearing sulfide minerals hosted in sheared, wall rock metasediments and clay alteration zones comprise one of the dominant styles of Palaeozoic orogenic gold mineralisation within the Reefton Goldfield, and is exemplified by OceanaGold’s Globe Mine. This study begins the exploration and characterisation of the gold-arsenic-antimony mineralisation hosted within the dominant lithologies of the Globe-Progress shear zone. The main gold-bearing sulfides are pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite. Pyrite and arsenopyrite are not compositionally uniform across the Globe-Progress shear zone. Pyrite from the mineralised greywacke and argillite has higher As contents than pyrite in the host rock and pug breccia. Furthermore, the mineralised greywacke and argillite pyrite are enriched in As from core to rim. The 3D models based on bulk assays reveal a significant correlation in the distribution of Au, As and Sb. The interpolant for Sb envelops those for Au and As, which in turn are very similar to each other in their vertical and lateral extents across the shear zone. This result is consistent with earlier findings that the occurrence of stibnite represents a separate and likely later phase of mineralisation relative to that represented by the formation of disseminated pyrite and arsenopyrite both of which exert a stronger control on the distribution of As.CITATION:Durance, P M J, Christie, A B, McIntosh, C and Carder, M, 2015. The effect of delay time on fragmentation has been discussed for a long period but rarely in a satisfactory and unbiased way. Despite the efforts of many researchers, delay selection for fragmentation improvement or optimisation remains a controversial issue. Large-scale tests have been plagued with scarcity and scatter of observations, while small-scale tests have been associated with boundary effects and energy losses. Theoretical work is often used to produce explanations for available measurements or tries to simplify wave propagation and wave interaction to guide observation and practical work. The present work analyses results obtained from a relatively large number of small-scale experiments in blocks made of grout, and re-analyses results of previous experiments, to conclude on the effect of delay on fragmentation. It is shown that the main contribution of the delay is found in the fragmentation of the larger fragments of the blast, while the small fractions show almost no effect. Samples, where copper liners were used to inhibit penetration of detonation products in the rock mass, showed effect of delay only when short times were used and steady but poor fragmentation when long delays were used. Based on small-scale experiments, it appears that the fragmentation is optimised when a hole fires prior to the radial cracks, produced by the previous hole, reach the free face of the blast. Gas penetration may result in the development of few more fractures that affect the fragmentation of the largest particles of the blast.CITATION:Katsabanis, P D and Omidi, O, 2015. In feasibility studies the choice of optimum cut-off grade is typically based on an evaluation of tonnage grade curves and manual design of stopes at one or two cut-off grades. In the industry these stope designs are usually based on break-even cut-off grades, but there is little consensus on what cost and price assumptions ought to be included. A new tool for automated stope design has been developed that generates sets of stope shapes for a nominated range of cut-off grades, or depending on the nature of the mineralisation, cut-off values based on net smelter return calculations in the block model. The stope design procedure includes constraints in stope and pillar geometry for the selected mining method and can be used to evaluate sublevel interval and sensitivities to other design parameters in the specific geological and geotechnical environment. These ænested stopesÆ are analogous to ænested pitsÆ in open cut design, and can be used as a key input in the æhill of valueÆ methodology for the evaluation of the optimum cut-off grade in underground design. The results of many consulting studies indicate that a break-even cut-off grade will not be the optimum cut-off grade. A particular benefit of the new stope design tool is that the design rules used to establish stope shapes in the feasibility study can then be used in mine production, in an optimal and repeatable method. This methodology is being advanced in the AMIRA P884 PRIMO project, which is a new research collaboration coordinated by AMIRA International. The project has brought together active research groups in Australia and Canada, with the goal of developing a flexible framework and set of software tools for optimisation in underground mine design.

To obtain the rock type-I crack propagation process accurately, a novel fixture is used to make the prefabricated crack of rock propagation along the predetermined direction. In this study, the crack propagation process of rock is monitored with the digital image correlation method (DICM), and a mechanical model of crack directional propagation was established. The results show that the simple crack directional propagation device can effectively realise the stable propagation of type-I crack along the predetermined direction, the crack initiation angle is less than 10°, and the deviation between the peak strength of crack propagation calculated by a simplified mechanical model and the tensile strength of Brazilian splitting is 22.76 per cent and 7.53 per cent, respectively. According to the deformation field evolution law, crack propagation can be divided into three stages: microcrack development, main crack propagation, and main crack propagation. As for the rock type-I crack initiation and propagation mechanism, before reaching the peak strength, the prefabricated crack tip is subjected to maximum tensile stress; the elastic energy increases rapidly, and the dissipation energy increases slowly; after the peak strength, elastic energy exceeds its energy storage limit and released rapidly, and most of the input energy is converted into dissipation energy, which makes the crack propagation rapidly. The crack directional propagation device will be further optimised and improved, and it is expected to provide a new method for the study of crack propagation mechanism, rock failure precursor information and crack arrest principle, etc. It will also provide theoretical references for the optimisation of coal strata directional blasting, fracturing, fracture arrest, and other related technologies in geotechnical engineering.

Mechanical damage leads to the increase of effective stress of sediments, and pore closure hinders the discharge of methane gas. Ignoring the influence of mechanical damage leads to an excessive prediction of hydrate gas production. Therefore, a fully coupled model considering mechanical damage-chemical decomposition-gas-water two-phase seepage-temperature was developed in this study, and the model was verified by Masuda experiment. Based on the fully coupled model, the temporal and spatial evolution of the whole process of hydrate decomposition under the influence of three initial absolute permeabilities, three pressure drops and three water saturations were considered. The results showed that: • The gas production rate reached the peak value in a short time after depressurisation, and the peak value increased with the increase of the absolute initial permeability. The larger the initial absolute permeability was, the faster the damage variable reached the peak value. The porosity increased gradually before the damage variable reached its peak, and the gas flowed more easily. • When the pressure drop was low, the hydrate remained stable in solid form. As the pressure drop increased, the hydrate gradually began to decompose. The greater the pressure drop was, the faster the initial decomposition rate of the hydrate was. So the damage variable increased rapidly and the porosity increased continuously, resulting in a large gas production rate at the initial stage of decomposition. • The larger the initial water saturation was, the smaller the effective stress wss, resulting in the slow growth of the damage variable and the small change of porosity.While the gas relative permeability was small, it resulted in a smaller gas production rate, and hydrate decomposition was slower. • The damage variable showed a process of rapid growth first, then slowly increased to the peak, and then gradually decreased to a stable state. When the damage was considered, the hydrate decomposition time to the steady state was longer, and the gas production was about 80.68 per cent of that without considering the damage.

Blasting in Norwegian mines is often carried out by contractors who tend to look for the cheapest solution, without concern about fragment quality. The requirementsfor a contractor are usually only related to the maximum size of boulders and the quantity per month. Even when the owners of the mine are responsible for blasting, very little effort is made to optimise the blasting process. This paper presents test methods which were used and results from small-scale and full-scale blasting tests. In the small-scale tests, cubes 500 x 500 x 500 mm of four different rock types were blasted in a chamber, using two types of dynamite explosive. The velocity of detonation (VOD) for the dynamite explosives was 3000 m/s and 6000 m/s respectively. Three cubes of each rock type were blasted with each type of explosive, and a total of six cubes of each rock type was used. The entire muckpile (approximately 350 kg) was- sieved and weighed after each blast and fragments between 8-16 mm were tested for impact values and flakiness. The results of these tests clearly showed improvement in fragmentation the closer the acoustic impedance ratio of the explosive (VOD x density) over the rock (Cp density) was equal to one. The results also showed that the quality of the fragments (in terms of impact values) tends to be better when the cubes are blasted with the high velocity dynamite.

Oxygen was in restricted use at Port Kembla until tonnage oxygen became available for steelmaking in the open hearth furnaces. In adopting the new process various modifications to furnace design and operation were necessary and some of these, including increase in roof height and variation in firing and draft control, are discussed.The design of oxygen lances is also discussed and various steelmakingtechniques considered.Steel production increased with oxygen roof lancing-one- furnace producing 8,507 tons in one week-but new problems, such as rate of refractory wear, and disposal of fumes, were created.Design of future open hearth oxygen furnaces is predicted.INTRODUCTIONIn the post-war era, the availability of "tonnage" oxygen caused a major revolution in steelmaking techniques. Various pneumatic processes showed that steel can be madeat a very fast rate and that oxygen steelmaking can be applied to open hearth furnaces. Methods used are surface impingement with roof lances, bath injection with door lances, flame enrichment with fuel firing, mixed gas and oxygen firing, and enrichment of normal combustion air by oxygen injection into the flue systems.Owing to its previous restricted availability and high cost, oxygen was used in rather small quantities in the open hearth furnaces at Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd.(A.I. & S.), Port Kembla, until about the middle of 1960.At that time tonnage oxygen became available and roof lancing commenced on No. 33 furnace at No. 2' open hearth shop.

Shales form distinctive peaks in natural gamma downhole logs, which are used to manually identify the location of ore boundaries. These shales form important lithology markers that can potentially be automatically identified using Gaussian processes. This approach is trialled using data from a typical iron ore mine in Western Australia which contains the Marra Mamba sequence of the Hamersley province.The method uses Gaussian processes (GPs) with a single length scale squared exponential covariance function. A library of 8 m sections, where natural gamma measurements were taken at 10 cm intervals down the hole, was used to train the GP model. This library was iteratively improved and was tested using natural gamma logs that were not included in the library. Areas that were misclassified or were not clearly classifi ed were added to the library. The new library was then used to train the model and improve the results. The trials used a double gamma peak from the NS3 and NS4 shales at the boundary between the Newman 1 and Newman 2 ore zonesin the Newman member and the AS1 and AS2 shales at the base of the West Angelas member. The results show that both boundaries can be identifi ed with an accuracy of over 99 per cent. The classification has the highest accuracy on undeformed shales. This method provides a fast, accurate and objective identifi cation of shale and ore boundaries and can potentially replace the current manual detection.

API Management Pty Ltd (API) is currently developing the West Pilbara Iron Project (the ‘Project’). The Project is a substantial greenfi elds mining and infrastructure development proposed for the west Pilbara region of Western Australia. The Project will establish API as a new and independent supplier of direct shipped iron ore. API manages the Australian Premium Iron Joint Venture (APIJV) on behalf of joint venture participants Aquila Resources Ltd and American Metals and Coal International Inc. The APIJV was formed in February 2005 with the objective of developing a long-term iron ore export operation in the west Pilbara region.Development of Stage 1 comprises a 30 million tonne per annum (Mt/a) channel iron deposit (CID) operation scheduled to commence in the second half of 2014 subject to approvals. JORC compliant CID resources total nearly 700 million tonnes and the Stage 1 mining area comprises eight iron ore deposits located between 30 km and 85 km south of Pannawonica. Run-of-mine ore from the eight deposits is transported to a central processing facility for crushing, screening and blending into a sinter fines product, which API has named West Pilbara Fines or WPF. Construction of a 282 km main line heavy haulage railway from the Stage 1 mining area to the proposed greenfields multi-user port at Anketell Point near Wickham, is capable of accommodating large Capesize bulk carriers and providing export facilities for other third parties. Capital investment in the order of $A6 billion includes essential support infrastructure including power, water, accommodation, roads and an airport at the mine.A feasibility study for the development of the Stage 1 mine, rail and port infrastructure has been completed along with environmental surveys of the mine, rail and port areas with Public Environmental Reviews (PERs) for each submitted for public review by end 2010. Consultation and cooperation with various stakeholders of the Project areas, and early engagement with traditional owners of the respective areas has commenced. Various sampling and metallurgical characterisation programs combined with independent institute and steel mill based testing have confirmed the positive sintering characteristics of WPF ore, which is higher in alumina (3.37 per cent) than typical Pilbara ores. *This is an abstract only. This paper is intended to continue the subject in the light of recent work, from where it was left at the conclusion of the discussion on the excellent paper by the late Mr. Noel Haszard. The position then obtaining is briefly summarised below:-The points which received general agreement at that time were:-'(1) That the gold occurs, probably in an elemental form, in a state of very fine division in the pyrite.(2) That the aim in roasting of Kalgoorlie flotation concentrates should be to obtain the maximum porosity possible. The gold tellurides were amenable to treatment with either a' solution of high lime and cyanide strength combined with fine grinding, or bybromocyanidation without re-grinding.(3) That a low roasting temperature is essential during the elimination of the first atom of sulphur, if the final calcine is to give a good extraction by cyanidation.(4) Even with the best temperature conditions of roasting then determined, and after a period of cyanidation of the calcines until no further extraction was obtainable, the lowest calcine residues obtainable were equivalent to approximately 1·8 dwts. per long ton, based on an original concentrate of pure pyrite.There was some division of opinion at the time as to whether the temperature of the later stages of roasting was significant, and also as to the reason why the initial roasting temperatures had so marked an effect.

It is a very great privilege for me to be able to address you tonight and I am deeply sensible of the honour which has been done me. I am equally sensible of the inadequacy of my training for the position of President of your Institute.May I say at once what a very great pleasure it is to have so many members from the mainland States visiting us here in Tasmania. We do hope that you will find pleasure and profit in your stay.Since the Annual Conference is always held in the vicinity of one or other of the great mining fields, it has become the practice for the Presidential address to review the history of the particular field and t(j) indicate its place in the economic structure of the country.I propose to follow this practice and to try and present to you a short picture of thÇ mineral industry as it has existed in Tasmania. None of the information is new it is available in diverse and remote geological reports and in publications such as Witham's Western Tasmania and the more recent Peaks of Lyell. The last composite approach was written twenty years ago by P. B. Nye and published as a Geological Survey Bulletin.I have enjoyed preparing this address because on occasion I find it refreshing to look back and see what was known and what was accomplished in the days when the going was a little tougher than it is now, and to speculate upon the reasons that drove men to do what they did. Due to the haphazard application of static tests in South Africa, several methods and interpretations have been followed. This has resulted in confusion amongst practitioners and regulators in the use and validity of these methods. Research was done over a two-year period to define standardised methods and interpretation of results. This included laboratory testing and continuous consultation with all interested parties throughout the country. The research yielded a modified ABA, based on several existing methods. The methodology includes AP determination using hydrogen peroxide, and an analysis of the supernatant by ICP. This has the advantage of not only registering reactive sulfur, but also provides the NAG pH, that enhances the interpretation and QC of the tests. Analysis of the supernatant provides an indication of heavy metal solubilisation, should acid conditions arise. One hundred and seventeen samples were compared to Leco S analyses and provided a good correlation. The Leco values were slightly elevated due to the reporting of total S as opposed to æreactive SÆ. The NP method deviates from the usual methodology, in that H2SO4 is used (to provide a field analogy) and the fact that a 24-hour stabilisation period is allowed before back-titration. The latter modification appears to prevent psuedo-buffering by transient phases. These methods have also been tested for repeatability and prove to be robust. A very simple macro-driven spreadsheet, æABACUSÆ, was also developed. This spreadsheet allows the entry of basic data and provides a detailed interpretation and graphical display of typical ABA data. In cases where drill holes are used, the Pennsylvanian approach of volume calculation can also be done with ABACUS. The results of the research have been distributed to interested parties in South Africa and it is hoped that these methods and their application will find widespread acceptance.

Despite significant investment in safety in the mining industry (mostly focused on processes and systems), many companies are unable to sustain and further improve their performance resulting in continued workplace incidents. The problem persists despite the best efforts of companies and allocation of resources to achieve Zero Harm. A DSS survey in 2019 found that two out of five companies that cannot manage risks and face disaster, leave the market within five years. All safety/risk management systems have the common steps of risk identification, prioritisation, design of controls consistent with risk tolerance, and verification of implementation/operability of controls. This is then complimented with improvement to one or more of the above elements through learnings obtained from incident investigations. In principle, the above process should work to reduce risks to, and keeping them at, a risk level consistent with risk tolerance in the organisation.
