The Calypso geothermal field, mapped by the R V Sonne (cruise SO-135) in 1998, includes four main sites, the Northern Vent Area (centred on 37¦ 36.7'S, 177¦ 06.2'E, area 1.5 km2), Central Vent Area (37¦ 39.4'S, 177¦ 05.2'E, 1 km2), Southern Vent Area (37¦ 41.7'S, 177¦ 06.0'E, 1 km2) and Mercury Vent Area (37¦ 41.3'S, 177¦ 07.3 'E, 0.5 km2). Hydrothermal activity at the vent sites is controlled by minor, sub-parallel NE-trending normal faults. Gas bubble trails (C02) and shimmering hot water vent from fractures and joints between large blocks of silicified volcaniclastics and in depressions in the sediments at the base of these outcrops. Measured maximum vent temperatures are between 180¦C and 201¦C. Venting fluids are at, or just below, boiling for water depths of 200 m. Rock samples recovered by dredge from the sites include massive anhydrite, clay-altered pumiceous ash, silicified volcaniclastic sediments and volcaniclastic breccias cemented by sulphur. Clay-altered samples, dominated by randomly interstratified illite-smectite and accessory chlorite, indicate formation environments of 70¦C to 90 ¦C. Native sulphur is abundant throughout the samples. Fine-grained (<1 mm) disseminated pyrite and vein pyrite occurs in the clay-altered pumiceous volcaniclastics and argillites. In the Southern and Mercury Vent Areas, fine-grained orpiment, realgar and cinnabar have deposited in the sandy matrix of volcaniclastic breccias. Amongst the cinnabar, small (<2 mm) beads of native Hg formed on the surface of several rocks following their recovery. These samples also contained abundant light hydrocarbons, which coat the rocks with an oily sheen.

Several Approaches to Enhance the Bioleaching of Enargite Some approaches were investigated to enhance the recovery of Cu from enargite by bioleaching with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans using the galvanic interaction with pyrite and activated carbon, and with thermophilic bacteria, Acidianus brierleyi. Addition of pyrite initially enhanced Cu leaching by the Galvanic effect, but after that the formation of secondary minerals passivated the surface of enargite in inoculated batches. Activated carbon improved Cu recovery from enargite much better than pyrite, when it is contacted with enargite. Recovery of Cu from enargite has been recorded to at largest 2.4 per cent within 30 days in the presence of activated carbon when mesophilic bacteria were inoculated at 25¦C. The recovery of Cu from enargite was drastically enhanced by inoculation of thermophilic bacteria, Acidianus brierleyi, up to 60 per cent within 40 days at 70¦C and still not leveled off after 40 days unless the formation of Fe(III) precipitates occurred. After 40 days dissolved molar ratio of Cu/As is around 5.2, suggesting that metal-deficient sulfides and/or ferric arsenate might be formed on the surface of enargite.

Mineral resources all over the world are often heterogeneous and have variable ore properties and ore grade. As a result the ore processed in concentrating plants varies over the life of mines. Consequently the circuits often suffer from bottlenecks typically at the stages of crushing, semi-autogeneous (SAG) and ball milling. Bottlenecks may be remedied with equipment retrofits, however, design engineers should consider a phased approach to the circuit design that delays initial capital expenditure over the life-of-mine. This paper deals with the debottlenecking of existing mineral processing plants by means of high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) applications. It also deals with the use of innovative flow sheet designs using HPGRs for the design of Greenfield plants by engineering or mining companies. In the case of Greenfield plant design an analysis with respect to energy efficiency and operating cost (OPEX) is presented. The analysis compares the performance of SAG based circuits against HPGR circuits that may be influenced by variable ore properties. Globally about 600 HPGRs are installed in various applications in the cement and minerals industries. In excess of 100 of these HPGRs are used since the mid 1980s for crushing and grinding of various ore types including æhard rockÆ applications. HPGR technology is mature enough to be considered as an ideal debottlenecking device. HPGRÆs are versatile, they have a low installation footprint and they are flexible in its machine settings (pressure, roll speed), which can be adjusted to react to ore variations whilst maintaining a high throughput. Examples for the benefits of using HPGR in terms of energy efficiency and operating costs are presented by this paper. æEco-efficientÆ flow sheets and sustainable development initiatives are linked to energy savings as an æenergy costÆ and benefit to the environment. Energy savingsÆ can also be analysed in terms of the ædollar costÆ (OPEX) savings. This paper demonstrates that HPGR is more energy efficient and may reduce the overall grinding energy requirements in the order of 16 per cent depending on the target grind size and ore properties. The HPGR is more cost efficient and may reduce overall grinding costs by as much as 19.3 per cent depending on the cost of energy, grinding media and the rate of grinding media wear in the comminution circuit.

Aqueous oxidation is a possible alternative to roasting for the processing of gold bearing arsenopyrite (FeAsS) concentrates. The reaction has been studied by voltammetry and this has shown, for the first time, that FeAsS can be readily dissolved without passivation at room temperature in dilute sulphuric acid at relatively modest oxidation potentials (0.7 V SHE). The reaction forms sulphur on the mineral surface and the oxidant consumption is thus minimal. Two practical modes of slurry oxidation are listed.

Best practice gold (Au) recovery is not an accident. It is the result of proper operation of the adsorption circuit using good quality activated carbon. A conventional carbon ‘regeneration’ kiln cannot process carbon fouled with floatation chemicals and achieve best practice gold recovery. A high temperature, controlled atmosphere carbon ‘reactivation’ kiln is required. Carbon circuit design allows for low quality carbon by increasing the carbon advance rate, carbon inventory and setting an easily achieved and commercially prudent solution tails target of typically 0.02 ppm Au. These design criteria are important to ensure the commercial success of the gold operation in the first instance. Most carbon ‘regeneration’ kilns will produce carbon of sufficient quality to achieve a 0.02 ppm Au solution tail in the absence of flotation reagents.Best practice recovery is considered less than 0.005 ppm Au in solution reporting to tails. If the carbon is heavily fouled, as it will be if used for flotation leach circuits, then a conventional carbon ‘regeneration’ kiln cannot achieve world’s best practice recovery no matter how much carbon is advanced. World’s best practice gold recovery requires a carbon ‘reactivation’ kiln and the whole of the carbon circuit operated optimally.The competing reactions occurring in a carbon ‘reactivation’ kiln are presented and discussed in terms of kiln design and operation. New industrial and laboratory findings are presented to fill gaps in the body of knowledge and identify that a large reduction in residence time at temperature will not significantly impair reactivation, but can significantly reduce the size and cost of the kiln or permit significantly increased carbon throughput.The carbon circuit performance is modelled in terms of gold adsorption, as a function of carbon reactivation using ‘simulation of carbon-in-leach/carbon-in-pulp circuits’ (SIMCIL). An optimum carbon advance rate is identified as a function of optimum carbon ‘reactivation’ kiln operation to achieve 0.005 ppm Au in the tails solution. The chief source of metallic iron for steelmaking in India, even today, as it is in most part of the world, is through blast furnace (BF) route. This will continue to be so in the foreseeable future as the technology is most efficient, both process and economy-wise. However, as the world is moving into the next millennium, a critical look is being given to the process primarily because of its non-ecofriendliness (as a result of extensive use of metallurgical coal/coke requiring elaborate pollution control facilities) and huge investment involved for supporting facilities like extensive raw material preparation and handling, agglomeration, adoption of sophisticated instrumentation and control system, etc.

THIS mine, which is the property of the S. and M. Syndicate, London, is located at Moina, in North-West Tasmania, 18 miles from Stavertorr railway station and 36 miles from Devonport. There are metalled roads from both of these places, and, althoughhilly, these are good for team or motor traffic. Mails and passengers are provided for by a tri-weekly coach service from Sheffield, a railway town, distant 23 miles. The Moina mining field is situated on a main spur between the Forth and Iris Rivers, andat an elevation ranging from about 500 ft. above sea-level at the Forth River to 2400 ft. at the All Nations mine. The elevation at the mine office of the S. and M. mine is 1900 ft. The average annual rainfall, as recorded for the past eight years, is. 68 in.This inclildes, however, a couple of years during which the rainfall was much above normal, and taken over a longer period 60 in. would be nearer the average.

The significance of blasthole stemming in determining blasting efficiency has been extensively studied for small diameter holes using gelignite explosives. Recent developments in blasting technology with the use of large diameter holes and low cost blasting agents have not included studies of the effectiveness of different types of stemming materials. A review of previous measurement techniques and the relevance of these earlier results to present stemming practice is presented in this paper. A survey of operating mines in Australia provided information for this analysis. The value of stemming in reducing blast noise and improving blasting efficiency is generally accepted but the use of bulk-loaded explosives in underground operations has resulted in the practice of eliminating the use of stemming material.In surface operations drill cuttings are used for stemming on the basis of availability rather than efficiency in providing resistance to movement. The development of laboratory testing techniques, based on noise level and borehole pressure measurements, to evaluate the relative efficiency of different types of stemming materials is described. The results of an extensive series of tests with ANFO explosive showed similar trends tothose obtained from earlier published results with gelignite type explosives. Conclusive quantitative results on the relative effectiveness of different stemming materials will require minor modifications to the existingequipment. Observations and the results of pressure measurements indicated the presence of shock wave effects which caused the ejection of the top section of the stemming column when using coarsely fragmented material.

A detailed study of the capital investment and production cost for copper electrowinning plants shows that significant savings in both can be achieved by increasing the current density. From the economic analysis it is determined that the optimum current density which will result in lowest capital investment and lowest operating cost is between 60 A/sq. ft. and 70 A/sq. ft., or at least three times as high as the Conventionally employed current density. The specific investment, expressed as $/ton-year, is found to be a function of both the current density and plant capacity and has a minimum value at the optimum current density. Empirical equations are developed for the purpose of estimating the capital investment and operating cost for plants of any production capacity operating at any current density.

Anglo Coal Australia (ACA) takes a proactive position with regards to attracting and retaining employees at a graduate level. Currently, ACA has graduates in its program across all disciplines: Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Commercial, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, Human Resources, Safety Engineering and Processing Engineering. The current program is three years in duration and involves two (generally) equal periods at different ACA mine sites or Brisbane Corporate Office. ACA takes an active role in promoting its status at the university level by maintaining a scholarship program. Six undergraduate scholarships are offered each year across all disciplines. Associated Vacation Employment is offered to each scholarship holder during the period of his or her university study. This commitment to education is regarded highly by future graduates. ACAÆs active role in sponsoring student bodies is also known and appreciated amongst the university population. Industrial minerals and rocks are those which are economically important because of desirable physical and/or chemical properties rather than metal or energy content. The evaluation of these resources for investment purposes in general follows established procedures after due consideration of well documented input data. However, in view of the sensitivity of many industrial mineral projects to specific inputs they require very careful analysis. The characteristics of the industrial minerals and the industrial minerals industry are reviewed and the significance of logistics, customer requirements, technology and marketing are discussed. Implications in relation to resources/reserves terminology are considered with phosphate rock used as an example. It is concluded that industrial mineral projects as a consequence of technology and market dependence in particular can give a high level of investment risk. The industry, however, offers most interesting and challenging employment opportunities for geologists, mineral engineers and economists.

The Kainantu Project is located within the New Guinea Thrust Belt in northern Papua New Guinea. The area has a long history of exploration and production, with the discovery of alluvial gold in 1928 followed by the discovery of vein deposits of gold and copper at Kora in the 1950s and the current Irumafimpa vein gold mine. Current resources on the Kora-Irumafimpa Vein System (KIVS) stand at 1.5 Moz Au, 5 Moz Ag and 217 Mlb Cu.Mineralisation in the region includes gold, silver and copper associated with mid-Miocene age mafic to felsic intrusions. The KIVS occupies a broad north-west-trending mineralised zone more than 2.5 km long and 200 m wide, with the Kora, Eutompi and Irumafimpa veins on the western side and the Judd and Upper Kora veins on the eastern side. Economic mineralisation occurs in two closely related events occupying the same strongly structurally controlled shearing (quartz-Au-telluride veins and sulfide Au-Cu-Ag veins with free Au) and is best described as a significant intrusion-related event with both epithermal and mesothermal facets that does not appear directly related to known porphyry Cu-Au systems as seen at the surface. Significant wolframite is associated with vein quartz of a slightly older age but also occupies the same shear system.The KIVS occurs within a larger mineralised area of approximately 5 × 5 km. It has complex multiphase intrusions, breccias and diatremes that are only partly delineated by drilling and comprises multiple occurrences of Au-bearing veins and porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. The area is considered to have high potential for extending the current resources and is being actively explored. The area between Merrygoen and Digilah is located on a structural high that separates the Sydney Basin from the Great Artesian Basin, and hence the stratigraphic succession of younger rocks overlying the basement is relatively thin. The stratigraphy is briefly described and it is shown that fluvial sedimentation prevailed from Upper Permian through to Middle Jurassic times. Flint clays occur in the Permian, Triassic and Jurassic but only those in the Jurassic appear to have commercial value at present. The chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties of the flint clays are discussed.

Establishment of the Cadia East Panel Cave Stage One (PC1S1) commenced with the firing of the first bell in early 2011. Production began with the completion of the undercut in May 2014. PC1S1 used a post-undercut composed of 114 drawbells covering a footprint area of 73 438 m². The extraction level is located at a depth of 1200 m below the surface and is based on a 32 × 20 m El Teniente layout. Cave establishment required the construction of multiple conveyor drifts, a large-capacity jaw-gyratory crusher and ancillary ventilation and pumping infrastructure. Preconditioning via hydraulic fracturing and blasting was implemented at various locations of the cave block height. X-ray diffraction and differential thermal methods were used to determine the mineralogy of some clays used by the heavy clay industry in the Adelaide area. A detailed analysis was made of the mineralogy and particle size distribution of eighteen samples from beds in two pits in the Recent sediments in the Adelaide plains, of six white clays developed from the weathering of the Adelaide series of sediments, and of four Recent alluvial clays from a pit in the Mount Lofty ranges south of Adelaide. Structural clay products in the Adelaide area are manufactured from mixtures of these clays, so the mineralogy and particle size distribution was determined of eighteen clay mixtures used to make red bricks, cream bricks, facing bricks, pipes and tiles.Knowledge of this mineralogy is important in understanding the ceramic behaviour of the clays.INTRODUCTIONIn this investigation an account is given of the clay mineralogy and particle size distribution of some ceramic clays from the Adelaide area. The clays are used in the manufacture of structura,l clay products and the results to 'be described are part of an overall 'plan of study covering the heavy industrial clays and shales of Australia. Feed slurries are typically flocculated in a thickenerÆs feedwell to increase the settling rate, underflow density and overflow clarity. High molecular weight polymeric flocculants are normally used, but present a number of challenges in terms of make up, dilution, delivery and mixing with the feed slurry.Various aspects of the flocculant dilution and delivery system have been studied with a combination of flow visualisation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). An open topped flocculant dilution/mixing box has been developed to replace a conventional flocculant manifold, with improvements to the mixing, fault diagnosis and ease of determining the flow split to the various dosing points. The addition points to the feedwell have also been studied, both in terms of where the flocculant is added, and how. While conventional multi-hole spargers are effective in dispersing flocculant, they are prone to blocking and have been replaced by open-ended pipes. The required dispersion is provided by an efficient mixing element placed in the dilution port. Adding the flocculant into the feedwell dilution stream prior to mixing with the slurry also provides super-dilution of the flocculant that can further improve the flocculation process and reduce flocculant consumption.CITATION:Heath, A R and Arbuthnot, I, 2013. From the Saranac Laboratory for the Study of Tuberculosis of the Edward L., Trudeau Foundation, Saranac Lake, New York:We are assembled to honor the memory of our friend and colleague, Donald Cummings, one of the founders and a past president of the American Industrial Hygiene Association. I deem it an Unusual privilege to have been asked to give this first memorial lecture and hope that what shall have to say may be worthy of the occasion. It is fitting that we should discuss here the subject of Silicosis to which he devoted such a large part of his life and it is doubly fitting, I think, that I should report to you an extended series of investigations carried on by his associates at the Saranac Laboratory.The subject of silicosis may seem hackneyed to this audience which is so familiar with the tried and accepted methods of prevention and control.But in spite of our efforts, the condition is still with us and unfortunately is still being produced in many places. In industries that now maintain good control of dust, fresh cases are appearing on annual re-examination, whose major exposure date back to the days before the hazard was recognized.A few new employees, with apparently ineffective upper respiratory protection against inhaled dust, develop silicosis precociously in environments that are comparatively harmless to their fellows. In plants that have relaxed their vigilance under the urgency of war production schedules, conditions again prevail that will produce, disease in the future.Silicosis acquired new interest with the announcement by Denny, Robson and Irwin(1) in 1937 that it could be prevented by the inhalation of powdered metallic aluminium. It so happened that without knowledge of their work, we at the Saranac Laboratory had for some months been conducting similar experiments with one of the hydroxides of aluminium.Quite independently we discovered that hydrated alumina would also protect animals against quartz. Our approach to the problem had been empirical; we were trying to neutralize quartz particles by coating their surfaces with an insoluble material following the lead of Kettle who in 1932 had shown that this could be accomplished with iron. Devitrification of a glassy volcanic ash equivalent to an alkaline trachyte in composition has resulted in the formation of an interstratified illite-montmorillonite with an 1:1\1 content of 1:4 as the principal clay mineral.A high concentration of potassium ions and a deficiency of magnesium ions favoured the formation of the potassium-bentonite.A poorly ordered mica mineral, equivalent to illite, was produced by weathering of potassic feldspar. Subsequent degradation of the illite through the loss of potassium was responsible for the formation of several interstratified minerals with very approximate 1:1\1 contents of 4: I as minor components.Other authigenic minerals present in small amounts were u-cristobalite, sepiolite, and the zeolite clinopitolite.The non-swelling character of the potassium-bentonite makes it economically unattractive...

Effective land-use planning requires accurate knowledge of mineral resource potential. Mineral companies during reconnaissance exploration, feasibility investigations and mine development also use this type of analysis. The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences is undertaking a two-year project reviewing the resource potential of the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Spatial prospectivity models have been developed as part of this resource assessment process, using computer based statistical pattern recognition techniques to delineate areas that are prospective for mineral deposits and to test deposit genesis models. Digital GIS data-sets of mineral occurrence were correlated against geology and exploration information. The distribution of mesotherrnal shear zone gold deposits in the Reefton Goldfield, were examined against geological data-sets from both the regional (QMAP) and local prospect-scale mapping. Weights of evidence analysis generated a correlation matrix that highlights relationships and degrees of association that might otherwise not normally be recognised.   Mesothermal shear zone gold deposits have strong positive spatial correlations with Greenland Group host rocks and areas with moderate to high quartz vein densities; moderate-strong positive correlation with regions <500 m from folds, with regions <600 m from faults and five to eight kilometres from granite contacts; moderate correlations with Ntrending fault and fold segments; and no/weak/poor correlations with fault intersections, fold-fault intersections, bends in regional structures and magnetic and radiometric data. The regional and prospect scale data sets give different results, with the more detailed prospect scale mapping giving generally better correlations. This emphasises the value of detailed geological mapping in the exploration process.   Maps generated by prospectivity modelling consistently highlighted areas of known mineralisation and generate targets where follow-up investigation is warranted. The prospectivity per unit area provides a measurable value that should change as new information comes to hand and, in addition to highlighting targets, can be used to measure the impact of increased exploration expenditure and assess the effectiveness of exploration investment.
