Lower Silesia Coal Basin/SW Poland/ is adjacent to highly gas saturated igneous massiv and since the beginning of this century more than 1500 outbursts have occurred in four existing mines, including 1295 in the most hazardous mine Nowa Ruda. Prevailing part of these are carbon dioxide/coal outbursts of ejected masses 50-5000 tonnes/av.200/t and gas volume released from 200 m3 to 800,000 m3 Magnitude of these phenomena is growing with the depth and for present extraction levels/ 375-753 m/ may be expressed by a formula: M = 4.25/H-400/, where M-masses ejected, t and H - depth of extraction, m. Regulations obligatory hitherto call for gas pressure measurements to be made in 3 m long and 42 mm dia. boreholes spaces not more than 25 m along the longwall face and taking sample of drillings for desorption testing. Criteria of a hazard are following: pressure higher than 30 kPa /for C02/ or 80 kPa /for CH4/ and desorption more than 1,44 cm3/g. These criteria are not satisfactory because many outbursts occurred in spite of low values of parameters measured and for several times no hazard was evident after very high values were obtained. Moreover, observations show that a huge majority of case outbursts occurred in coal weakened by local geological distortion.

Dissatisfied with conventional wet processing methods for alluvial deposits, Resource Trend Pty Ltd of Cairns set out to develop a better process. After comprehensive investigation of existing dry techniques the principals have now developed a rotary dry concentrator that can handle the fine-grained fraction of alluvial deposits as well as the coarse. Four of these units have been mounted on an integrated towable treatment plant which has been in successful commercial operation for four years in northern Queensland. A second plant is now under construction for use in the United States. Grades of less than 0.2 g/lcm have been profitably mined at throughputs of about 80 cubic metres per hour and 85 per cent availability. The operation runs round the clock with an establishment of four. Major benefits, apart from lower capital and operating costs, are environmental. Ore is picked up, treated, and replaced in its original mixed condition within 25 m of its initial location. Rehabilitation is completed almost immediately behind the plant as it advances, leaving no slimes dams, coarse stockpiles, or haul roads. In 1993 the company won a Premier's Award for Environmental Excellence in the Queensland Mining Industry. The principal disadvantage is moisture, and the company is now actively seeking deposits in the deserts of the world. In Queensland mining is normally possible only for six months of the year.

The purpose of this research was to study the calcination of lead-zinc flotation tailings from the Angouran lead and zinc flotation plant in Iran as a pre-concentration step prior to hydrometallurgical processing of the oxidised tailings. There is an abundance of these tailings in the Angouran region and making use of these tailings would help preserve national wealth and also reduce the serious problems of environmental pollution caused by the tailings. At the optimal conditions of calcining at 750 - 800¦C for 45 minutes, the sample showed a mass loss of about 19 per cent. Mineralogical analyses showed that under these conditions the carbonate minerals including smithsonite (ZnCO3), calcite (CaCO3) and dolomite (Ca Mg (CO3)2) decomposed to their respective oxides. Hemimorphite (Zn4Si2O7 (OH)2.H2O) converted into willemite (Zn2SiO4) and this transformation postponed the formation of silica gel in the leach solution. The grade of zinc increased from 22.20 per cent to 29 per cent. These mineralogical changes resulted in desirable reactions in the acid leach process.

Numerous recent analyses have shown that future demand for a broad range of critical commodities is unlikely to be met by new discoveries and recycling alone. The only practical alternative source to address this shortfall comes from orebodies which are currently either uneconomic or inaccessible. A common assumption is that a simple rise in commodity price will render these deposits economic. The mining industry has a long history of innovation allowing economic production from increasingly low grade and technically challenging orebodies. Industry “roadmaps” have been produced on a regular basis, with the aim of identifying future innovations which will allow this progression to continue. At the same time, there have been relatively few systematic analyses of the actual range of challenges facing undeveloped orebodies. The aim of this study is to analyse the mix of challenges faced by a group of undeveloped orebodies in order to better understand the relative importance and necessity of innovations applicable to the deposits, with the ultimate aim of determining the relative value and impact of possible innovations to the economic viability of those deposits. Process industry measurement systems, once installed, are often interpreted as static black boxes delivering correct values as long as not proven otherwise. After first implementation and set-up with a distinct sampling frequency, they often run ‘forever’ without checking if this frequency is still appropriate with respect to changed raw materials characteristics, different process conditions or changed customer specifications. Failure detection is based on operator experience and skills (often close to an art form) and/or from control measurements of reference samples. This may well be too late for many industrial process contexts. An appropriate sampling frequency is a critical success factor for valid monitoring and control.Based on the methodology of variographic analysis we here illustrate how to design/re-design/optimise an industrial measurement system in terms of sampling frequency, discretisation and accuracy based on customer specifications. We also show how variographics can be used to monitor for deviations. We use experience from process industry to show how these methods can be used not only for product characterisation, but also for monitoring input factors, process indicators and measurement of these. The information hidden in the vast amounts of data that is continuously created in modern process industries can be utilised to cut costs in the measurement activities and at the same time contribute to early error detection. We illustrate by case examples from production processes at a nickel refinery, supporting the Lean and Six Sigma methodology. This will provide a standard operating procedure for monitoring the stability of measurement systems, and provide a basis with which to discuss how a variographic approach can be integrated with the Lean and Six Sigma approach as an online tool to map, characterise and validate measurement systems and thus avoid more cumbersome measurement system analysis in full detail.CITATION:Thisted, E, Thisted, U, Bøckman, O and Esbensen, K H, 2017. A hidden asset in most exploration and mining activities is data. Common practice involves the spending of large amounts of money to discover, define and prove the viability of a mining project. Some organisations have used operations research analysis and internal costing methods to allocate a value to their data and to compare the costs of data maintenance to other more tangible activities like plant and equipment maintenance. Those organisations, which do not undertake such an analysis often, have little knowledge or understanding of the extent and the worth of their data. Often the organisations lack of knowledge and understanding of the data is indicated by their failure to fully exploit or realise their opportunities. The focus of this paper is to discuss new technologies that optimise the management and security of collected and derived data. The technologies discussed are components of the software systems acQuire and MineSight.

The Gold Ridge Mine is an open-cut gold mine in the Solomon Islands. The mine is owned and operated by Gold Ridge Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ross Mining NL. At the invitation of the Solomon Island Government, project construction commenced in July 1997 and gold production commenced in August 1998. The mine is the countryÆs first, and represents a major milestone in the development of the Solomon Islands. At the time of project approval and construction, there was a growing awareness in the country of the potential impacts of mining in the tropics, partly due to unfavourable publicity surrounding a number of other mining operations in the Pacific region. The management of environmental impacts was therefore an important consideration in the approval of the project, and continues to receive a high level of attention from the Government and community. Ross Mining did not commit to the Gold Ridge Project until it had satisfied itself that all waste rock and tailings could be safely contained on-site, and that the standards normally expected of a mine in Australia could be met. Ross Mining approached the approval, construction, and operation of the Gold Ridge Mine with a set of operating principles that met Government and community concerns. These were:best practice environmental management; operation of the mine in accordance with standards expected of mining operations in Australia; independent peer review of key technical aspects; on-going consultation with Government and community; and equitable transfer of wealth to landowners and the local community. As a consequence, the Gold Ridge Mine has developed into a successful mining operation with a high level of support from local landowners, the general community and the Central and Provincial Governments of the Solomon Islands.

The employment of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) is the default delivery method for the realisation of traffic, utility and primary resource underground space worldwide, with hundreds of kilometres completed safely each year. This is not yet the case for the mining sector in Australia, specifically underground coal mining. The safety advantages of TBM delivery when compared to New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) delivery, or that of drill and blast, remains unrealised.With coal access drifts ranging between 1000?m and 3000?m in length, the construction of these facilities using TBMs could be done in a fraction of the time when compared to current practice. TBM world records currently stand at 435?m/week or 1600?m/month for the 7.0?m to 10.0?m range. Resource owners and developers should embrace the opportunity to deliver access to their orebodies in only a few months, excluding machine assembly and disassembly time.There are challenges in utilising TBMs for construction of Coal access drifts, such as; TBMs generally being bespoke design, maximising capital efficiency for drift development, and geotechnical variances between projects. This paper explores safer and more cost-effective options. This paper also provides detail of how the configuration within a completed drift could be optimised to ensure all site specific needs are met with regard to future use of the drift. The paper also includes descriptions of the engineering solutions that are available for physical and atmospheric challenges specific to coal drift applications and how the TBM manufactures are adapting to the regulatory requirements are also covered.Due to downward pressure on high cost bases and ever increasing safety requirements the popularity of TBMs in the Australian mining sector can be expected to increase and eventually become the default delivery method for coal drift construction, building them cheaper, faster and?safer.CITATION:Sibthorpe, D, 2014. For Australian mining projects, sustainable groundwater use is typically defined as a groundwater extraction regime, measured over a specified planning time frame, which allows acceptable levels of stress and protects dependent economic, social and environmental values (DEH, 2004). This principle is compatible with most stakeholdersÆ understanding of our national environmental objectives, yet the application of this policy on a project-specific scale is not always straightforward. Three examples of sustainability issues in the management of groundwater in mining are presented. These examples highlight each of the three dependent values: environmental, economic and social.

When attempting to understand potential regional or community socio-economic changes that resource-extraction industries may produce, it is important to analyse the channels that promote these changes. In this study, we propose a conceptual framework to better understand how socio-economic effects are likely to emerge in regions impacted by mining. The framework considers three levels of hierarchical effects (Measham, Fleming and Schandl, 2016).In the first level, the resource-extraction industry causes four direct initial impacts on nearby communities: labour demand shock (mining employment generation), income generation (compensation to landowners and higher wages), environmental consequences and land tenure/Aboriginal issues and an increase in local tax revenues.The second level is shaped by the subsequent population increase (given by immigration of permanent or temporary residents) produced by the new levels of employment and income that resource windfalls can generate in resource-extraction regions. These increases in employment, income and population become the source for a rise in the demand for local (and non-local) goods and services.Finally, the third level is given by boomtown-like and other socio-economic effects generated from the initial effects.CITATION:Measham, T G and Fleming, D A, 2016. FLSmidth (FLS) has spent the last 15 years, working with customers and engineering houses to deliver innovative improvements in crusher safety, coupled with the latest, maintenance friendly, crusher design. The key focus being to prevent service personnel from working underneath the crusher during maintenance and obviate the need for personnel to be exposed to suspended loads when performing tasks such as, main shaft installation, for example. Improvements include: full top-service capability to ensure the safest and fastest way to disassemble the crusher for maintenance purposes, which also removes the requirement for a service cart; a selfaligning main shaft which ensures remote assembly is now possible, keeping service personnel well out of harm’s way; And rotable shells, or the ability to perform relines off-station, allows for quick shell ‘swap-over’ without the downtime associated with removing, refitting and curing time associated with epoxy backing. The high flow spider improves large material entry into the crusher, reducing blockages and downtime and therefore maintains crusher capacity. Each size of crusher in the range comes with an option to increase the standard feed opening to a larger one if desired to compensate for ‘blocky’ or ‘elongated’ feed material, a common problem for Pilbara hematite iron ores. Power capability has also been increased with a maximum of 1500 kW, to match the higher throughput capacities being achieved. This due to uprated eccentric speeds and larger discharge annulus. Increased eccentric throws and mantle diameters are also now a reality, when compared to more traditional designed gyratory crushers. To keep up with the improved design features of the Mk V, digitalisation has also been upgraded to maximise performance capabilities to ensure that the most efficient reduction and throughput capacities are achieved, whilst utilising the higher powers now available as standard. Condition monitoring ensures that the crusher is at its optimum operating capability by monitoring and adjusting the crusher settings via feedback from additional sensors, ie main shaft spin, temperature and vibration. Camera monitoring capabilities are available as is an advanced oil contamination monitoring system. As a result of the above design improvements, it will be shown that the Mk V range offers benefits such as: enhanced safety features, increased availability, faster maintenance turnarounds, higher power utilisation, equivalent product size at higher throughput capacities and with Remote operation capabilities. All of which result in a gyratory crusher with higher levels of safety and a lower per tonne operating cost.

Many ore reserves are harvested by a combination of open pit and underground mining methods. In these cases, there is often material that could be mined by either method, and a choice has to be made. The area containing this material is referred to as the transition zone. Deciding where to finish the open pit and start the underground mine is referred to as the transition problem and it has received some attention in the literature since the 1980s.In this paper, we provide a review of existing approaches to the transition problem encompassing: graph theory-based optimisation employing an opportunity cost approach, heuristics and integer programming. The haulage system used to convey ore from an underground mine to a surface stockpile at the mine process plant is a vital component of the mine’s overall infrastructure and economic viability. The system selected has a significant impact on the set-up of the mine and the access to the underground mine. In turn, the set-up of the mine and the access to the underground mine have a significant impact on the system.A number of haulage technologies are available to transfer the ore from the underground workings to the surface stockpile, including hoists, conveyors, rail and trucks.This paper focuses on the shaft hoisting and inclined conveyor haulage technologies. These technologies have been used consistently to deliver ore from at depth and/or at high tonnage. Previous reviews of the appropriate vertical haulage systems have nominally been restricted to the respective systems only, with no consideration for any other scope or issues that may affect the selection. A biological column leach testwork program was undertaken on a chalcocite ore. Three tests were conducted in all, using 65 in x 100 mm columns in three sections. The tests were started with varying acid strengths and inoculated with bacterial solutions from previous column testwork. The leaching of Cu was found to occur in three stages. These stages consisted of direct acid leaching, bacterial oxidation and ferric iron leaching. These leaching stages can most easily he described through the examination of not only Cu dissolution but also Fe dissolution and its subsequent oxidation and precipitation. The p11 of the system was found to he critical in establishing and maintaining the bacterial leaching system. The oxidation potential was seen to he influenced by the leaching system as the oxidation states altered. Test variables such as, 02, COz, and temperature were all found to influence the system. Final copper recoveries were in excess of 90 per cent in each column test over a leach time ranging from 211 to 328 days. Given similar leach conditions are applied, the application of this technology to site is expected to give comparable results.

Morro Agudo is an underground zinc and lead mine owned by Nexa Resources. The mine uses room and pillar as the main mining method. The recovery of pillars as well as the opening of new excavations using sublevel stoping as mining method has been studied. On some occasions, the need to recover pillars and open a stope by using the sublevel method happens in a region that is already excavated or in deeper areas than those mined so far. These changes represent a major geotechnical challenge due to the complex openings of the mine and interaction between two different mining methods. Historically, geotechnical mapping, kinematic analysis and a 2D numerical model were used to evaluate the new mine openings, and in 2021, 3D numerical model was introduced, which enabled global and local assessment of new excavations impact and the stability of openings after recoveries. The 3D model, made with MAP3D, is used to evaluate each pillar to be recovered, considering the spans of the resulting openings, the ideal sequencing of removal to maintain stability, in addition to the impact and geometry of the pillars left in the chambers. Pillar recoveries done in 2021 and the impact of it on the pillars left were the sources of the back analysis to calibrate parameters inputted on numerical model to assess recovery on new chambers and Phyllite has been considered into the model and it has been a source of instability due to its parallel position to roof of room and pillars and stope hanging walls.

"This paper reflects on the author’s experiences in undertaking mining studies and reviewing mining projects and technical reports, particularly over the past five years, and the impact of recent changes in reporting standards and listing requirements pertaining to mining-related evaluation and valuation exercises. It also discusses contemporary changes in the expectations of the investment community and the implications for the role of the technical specialist in providing advice to such stakeholders.Not for the first time in history, the resources industry has experienced a significant downturn after a period of strong, sustained growth in line with the traditional view of the cyclical nature of commodity markets. The resource industry is currently faced with capital austerity in the wake of projects ‘failing’ (not delivering to expectations). In response, the industry has experienced changes in investment behaviour (slowing of investment) and an increasing regulatory burden as stakeholders seek a greater understanding of mining project risks.This paper discusses this response and uses case studies to highlight the key learnings (perhaps re-learnt) by the industry. It also discusses the challenges faced by technical specialists in communicating the results of technical and valuation studies to the investment community.As investors seek to take advantage of the current stage in the investment cycle, the key challenge of the technical specialist is to effectively communicate the uncertainty in technical assumptions, risks and opportunities that drive project value.CITATION:Fairfield, P J, 2016. This analysis attempts to reconcile existing ecological theories, rehabilitation planning goals and implementation constraints in the form of a rehabilitation paradigm that considers potential and pragmatic ecosystem transformation pathways. The framework prioritises multiple developmental scenarios for post-disturbed landscapes within a continuum of ecological outcomes. A feature of the framework is that ænovelÆ ecosystems and agro-ecosystems, having a range of commercial and societal values, are valid outcomes spanning the conceptual divide between the ecological functions of under-rehabilitated versus re-instated ænaturalÆ landscapes, especially in a changing environment. Landscape suitability analyses are considered to be fundamental to the incorporation of regional landscape and climate in the implementation of land rehabilitation and management strategies. "The carbon-in-pulp process has been used extensively in the gold industry since the late 1970s to recovery leached gold from solution. Despite more than 30 years of experience in operating carbon circuits, average gold solution loss has remained at an average of 0.02–0.03 ppm (mg/L), higher than the ‘best practice’ target of 0.01 ppm.Process modelling, such as SIMCIL developed by the Curtin Gold Technology Group (GTG), can provide information on optimum set points; however, manual control of the circuit limits the potential benefits.An automated carbon measurement device, the Scout Carbon Meter, has been developed to allow for automation of carbon concentration measurement, and automated control of the carbon transfer pumps. Since 1975 two electric hydraulic drills, a Robbins 11ND and an Atlas Copco C0P1038, have been part of the production drilling fleet at Mount Isa Mines Limited's Isa Mine. As might be expected with innovative and technically more complex machines, breakdowns and mainten- ance problems have been greater than those experienced with pneumatic drifters. This has been especially so with the COP1038 but in co-operation with Atlas Copco, many modific- ations have been made to alleviate operating problems. The training and quality of the maintenance workforce is of great importance. The use of coloured pictorial diagrams for hydraulic trouble-shooting will aid in minimising maintenance downtime. Both machines have achieved good operator acceptance. This is the result of many factors, the major ones being the more acceptable environmental conditions, the relatively low amount of physical effort and the high degree of mechanisation. The drilling area is one in which there is great potential for cost savings and product- ivity gains. Because both machines are capable of a high drilling output, Isa Mine is confident of achieving these aims.

The P49 Shaft, Hilton Mine, was sunk and equipped for Mount Ise Mines Limited by con- tractors Cementation - Thiess Joint Venture. The leached siltstones to a depth of 150m were known to contain large volumes of water. These siltstones were cored and tested in the laboratory. Field results confirmed that cement grouting was relatively ineffective but that chemical grouting was effective. The Sm diameter shaft was sunk to a depth of 1040m. Weak strata to the full depth re- quired continuous temporary support by rock bolts and mesh before the concrete lining was poured, and made sinking conditions difficult. After completion of the shaft sinking the headframe was redesigned and modified to allow shaft equipping as a combined service and hoisting shaft with seven compartments. The shaft steelwork was designed and fab- ricated for service with high speed conveyances operating under corrosive conditions. The steelwork, weighing approximately 1500 tonnes, was installed to a high degree of accuracy which required guides not to depart from true verticality by more than 2mm over any 5m, or 15mm over the full shaft depth.
