Effective domaining is fundamental to geostatistical modelling for grade control. Through analysis of lithological, structural and alteration logging data, effective groupings (domains) can be identified and employed for estimation or simulation purposes.The poor definition of domains can adversely affect the grade control model resulting in a misinterpretation of the optimal ore-waste boundary and ultimately reduces the quality of recovered ore. The implementation of an appropriate domaining strategy is therefore expected to improve recovery and reconciliation.A thorough understanding of the geology of the deposit and adequate sample data is required for selecting domains. For new deposits, a resource drill database and resource model may be the only information available. Where extension to a previous operation is taking place, historic grade control, mapping and exposed geology may be used to improve domain selection. Preconceptions about domains, should they exist, need to be re-evaluated and tested to ensure they are fit for the purposes of grade control.While mining progresses, the domain model is re-evaluated to ensure that the previous interpretation is still suitable for the present configuration and geology. The grade control process, being iterative, lends itself to regular review and continuous improvement as further data is collected during the grade control cycle. Regular updates to the geology model, mapping, geostatistical data analysis and review of variography will provide indications of a changing domaining environment.Narrow vein gold deposits, which may have several factors influencing mineralisation, present considerable domaining challenges. Recent advances in ruggedised industrial control system technology and architecture in combination with latest technologies in the fast-evolving 3D LiDAR sensor sector becoming available have enabled the implementation of sophisticated automation algorithms for mining equipment such as bucket wheel reclaimers, as published by the authors in the peer reviewed AusIMM 2019 Iron Ore conference proceedings. This paper provides an overview of a second use case for such automation technology in bulk material ports integral to iron ore operations. The real-time 3D machine-vision based port automation system described in this paper was originally developed for the BHP-Mitsubishi Alliance’s (BMA) Hay Point port. The system has seen deployment at other major mining and general ports in Australia, such as at Dalrymple Bay Terminal (DBT) (shown in Figure 1) managed by Dalrymple Bay Infrastructure Management (DBIM), Hay Point, Queensland. There has been a reduction in overall workforce in the mining industry during the current downturn; a corresponding reduction in fatalities and high potential incidents (HPIs) has not been observed. The same contributing factors can be seen in the vast majority of these incidents. These include inadequate supervision and lack of adequate risk assessment. How management structures, trains and leads an operation can have a great impact on eliminating these factors and reducing the risk of fatalities and HPIs.Contractors now account for 41 per cent of full-time equivalent employees in the Queensland mining workforce, and are disproportionately represented in the majority of fatalities and HPIs. Having a clear strategy for how contractors are integrated into the workforce is crucial. Preconcentration, through gravity separation (Wallace et al, 2015), magnetic separation and particle size (Clout, 2013), has been used in many historical projects to convert low grade material into ore. More recently, pre-concentration technologies such as bulk sorting (Kurth, 2017), screening (Bearman, 2014) and coarse particle flotation (Vollert et al, 2019) have also demonstrated their ability to progressively reject waste through the value chain. These technologies can not only deliver stepchange improvements to the economics of mining operations, but can transform the environmental and social aspects by minimising water and energy consumption and significantly reduce the quantity of fine tailings produced. However, implementing progressive waste rejection requires technologies and approaches to be combined and applied in the right way to capture the value. From a technical perspective, progressive waste rejection introduces challenges related to the orebody, equipment performance, engineering and understanding the value chain from the resource through to final product. From a management perspective, the key issues are related to people and processes, in particular; motivating the business, challenging the paradigms, and introducing new ways of operating within the constraint of existing management structures to manage risks and minimise lost opportunity costs. This combination of technical and management issues means that progressive waste rejection is a complex undertaking for mining companies, yet the reward for the business and other stakeholders is potentially high and should not be ignored. This paper presents how progressive waste rejection can offer step-change improvements to the business case for high and low grade greenfield and brownfield projects based on case studies completed by Ausenco. The paper then outlines different implementation approaches from concept studies to execution to address the various technical and management challenges outlined above.

Seven papers included in Session 8 of the Third International Mine Water Congress under the heading "Achievements in Mine Water Management & Research" have been reviewed. Only one paper, a case study by Masters on biological treatment of inorganically polluted effluent, has any connection with research in the sense of seeking new, generally applicable knowledge which would advance the frontiers of mine water management. The remainder deal with various aspects of the management of mine water ranging from investigation of the geology of a specific aquifer system through operating dewatering systems to the management of specific effluent disposal problems.

"In a climate characterised by an ever increasing focus on cost reduction and maximising the utilisation of existing assets and infrastructure, understanding the uncertainty associated with alternative investment and operational choices becomes paramount to minimising the risk of making an ineffective decision. To assist in this process, TSG Consulting has developed an analytic framework to capture the underlying complexity of a mineral supply chain, and then quantify the impact of the uncertainty associated with the key drivers of business productivity. The technical basis of this approach follows three distinct steps: analyse the current system and identify the major factors that drive value build detailed models that can measure the response of the system to potential changes in the factors identified quantify the sensitivity of financial and capacity forecasts to these factors.Each of the above steps draws on a different area from the field of applied analytics, namely: data analytics dynamic modelling and designed experimentation meta-modelling and optimisation.Following the three-step approach described above ensures a rigorous modelling and analysis process is executed to support strategic mine planning decisions. The approach is equally applicable to the analysis of fully integrated system supply chains (pit-to-port), the evaluation of incremental capital investments to targeted areas of a supply chain, or when considering revisions to the operating philosophy of a system in the short term. Historically mining engineers haven't spent enough time planning waste dumps, but waste movement costs often outweigh ore haulage costs. There is a real incentive to plan waste dumps right the first time to minimise rehandle and final closure costs. At BHP Billiton Iron Ore there has been an increasing sophistication in waste dump design and they are becoming as important as the pit design. Closure landforms are now included in mining studies. Closure is embedded in the business planning cycle. The results from the recent life of mine study at Whaleback is a case in point where a base case of the shortest hauls with no closure constraints was compared against a closure case. A properly planned and executed waste plan revealed that no rehandle was required and haulage costs were eight per cent less if closure design implementation was carried out concurrent with mining. At cessation of mining the landforms were such that decommissioning of critical acid rock drainage dams and coverage of exposed pyrite areas could occur straight away, without the need for additional rehandle.  The paper also covers design and scheduling elements of waste design both in-pit and ex-pit, management of potentially acid forming material (PAF) and trends in PAF management and designing for final landform closure. This paper illustrates that there is value in terms of costs savings, sustainable outcomes and reputation if the mine planners are involved in the closure planning process.

Open pit mining commenced at Lihir Island in 1997 and is undertaken using a conventional drill, blast, load, haul methodology. Unique challenges at the operation include an active geothermal system, a well-developed advanced argillic blanket in the upper portions of the orebody and high rainfall. Grade control is effective utilising routine blast cone sampling. While this provides ‘just in time’ grade information for mill blending, there are opportunities to improve scheduling of mill feed, based on material classification of clay types and sulfur grades. The nature of the clay can impact on the handling properties while the sulfur grade is an important guide for autoclave blending, required for refractory gold. Drilling below the pit floor introduces hazards from the identified geothermal field. A trial Reverse Circulation (RC) program was implemented with the aim of defining four benches below the active mining bench. A comprehensive risk analysis, including the geothermal environment, was undertaken to design a drill collaring procedure with pressure diversion equipment. Operator exposure was minimised through ‘nil on foot’ principles with the driller located in an onboard cab, utilising remote rod handling. Sampling personnel operate in an elevated platform with access to protective covering. Samples from blastholes and the RC holes are processed at two site laboratories. One provides conventional Au fire assays with additional Infrared Combustion (Leco style) S analysis. The second laboratory collects material classification details from portable XRF (pXRF), near infra-red spectrometry (ASD) and Hardness Indicator Testing (HIT). An existing workflow was updated by the site to deal with the additional samples and ensure production ‘turn around times’ were retained for short-term planning. This required some changes to drying temperatures, compositing and screen sizing for the material classification. All results from the two laboratories are loaded into a centralised acQuire database for estimation into a single block model that informs the 13 week medium term planning (MTP) schedule. This paper describes some of the logistical issues faced when drilling in a geothermal area. It also discusses the selection and commissioning Quality Assurance of the sampling equipment and drill rig. Integration of the resulting assay data with existing resource models is also explained.

There is much debate on the Competent Persons qualifying criteria for providing classified resource estimates for public reporting. The CRIRSCO family of codes including the JORC Code, SAMREC, PERC and NI43–101, require Competent Persons to have at least five years ‘relevant’ experience and belong to professional bodies. These codes provide further, albeit vague, guidelines to assist individuals with their personal decision to take on the mantle of ‘Competent Person’. There is a risk, however, that these qualifying criteria can result in ill-prepared Competent Persons whose actions and recommendations would undermine their own reputation and that of the organisations that employ them; the integrity of the profession and the principles based reporting systems; as well as the stability of stock markets that rely on these estimates.Based on doctoral study on the development of professional competency within the mining industry, this paper presents an evaluation of the suitability of the current qualifying criteria as well as an analysis of alternative criteria. The research included a series of interviews with industry experts and an online survey of resource geologists. Semi-structured interviews provided a sense of experts’ expectations and interpretation of the current definition of ‘Competent Person’. The comprehensive online survey included a self-assessment, a series of situational questions designed to evaluate responses to typical resource geology scenarios and a set of open-ended questions relating to factors contributing to competency development.A summary of the data analysis, interpretation of the results and a set of recommendations for revised ‘Competent Person’ qualifying criteria are presented. This paper contributes to the conversation on what makes a person suitably qualified to report classified resource estimates and provides practical targets that can be used in the professional development of resource geologists.CITATION:Coombes, J, 2014. This study analysed the fracture characteristics and movement process of goaf roofs under the condition of gangue backfilled mining, based on the engineering conditions of Tangshan Mine F5001 gangue backfilled working face. The inclined borehole detection method is adopted to conduct long-term and fixed-point detection of the roof stability. The distribution characteristics of mining-induced cracks in the roof are described quantitatively based on the crack density, and a similar model test method is used to assist the analysis of the roof movement under the control of gangue backfilled mining using stress sensors and digital speckle deformation field monitoring. The results show that under the condition of gangue backfilled mining, structural cracks in the roof typically appear at the boundary of rock strata. The appearance of cracks is related to the rock strata where they are located. Structural cracks appear in the form of single cracks ahead of the working face and develop into structural cracks in the goaf. The roof movement of the coal seam develops in five stages: fracture incubation, crack extension in advance, dense fracture development, steady fracture expansion, and roof stability. Separation forms the primary component of the roof subsidence, accounting for more than half of the subsidence value. The separation generally extends over a long distance along the strike, and vertical crack-intensive areas appear in the roof above the cut-off and stop line. The findings of this study provide a theoretical basis to support designs of backfilled mining and upgrading of hydraulic supports in working faces.

Two case studies are presented in this paper. The first one discusses a roller compacted concrete water supply dam that was constructed in El Mauro in Chile to provide water for agriculture activities downstream of a copper mine during the dry season. The 23 m high dam used a bituminous geomembrane (BGM) as the low permeability upstream facing element on the dam to control seepage through the dam. This is the first time that a BGM has been used in this application. A deep cut-off trench was used to control seepage beneath the dam and through the abutments. This paper briefly presents the design of the dam, including selection of the concrete mix and maximum aggregate size that the use of the Coletanche BGM allowed, and provides details of the construction, quality control and assurance of the installation of the BGM. An ultrasonic apparatus was used as part of the quality control on the BGM seams.The second case study discusses a tailings dam in Cerro Lindo, Peru (near Chincha), where a watertight BGM was installed on the upstream face. Results are presented of the survey done by a consultant on the behaviour of the dam and in particular of the BGM following an earthquake of magnitude 8.1 in Chincha close to the site. The electrolytic recovery of metals from solution requires an understanding of the characteristics of the particular system employed, and the current efficiency and morphology of the deposit are influenced by such factors as cell design, metal ion and supporting ion concentration, acid concentration, temperature, impurity levels and cell design. The electrolytic deposition of both cadmium and silver present individual difficulties, and special cell designs are used for each of these metals. It was found that cadmium deposition was plate-like at lower cadmium concentrations, and at higher current densities. The presence of zinc in the electrolyte promoted nodular growth. Current efficiency remained high even at 50C in contrast to published information. Silver deposition morphology was relatively unaffected by changes in silver concentration, pH and current density. Current efficiency was reduced as temperature was increased.

The term geometallurgy (or geometallurgical) first appeared in the literature some 40 years ago and has a wide range of definitions and perspectives which increases the barriers of communication between practitioners and across functional groups and management levels within organisations. However the consistent theme running through the diversity of definitions and perspectives is the requirement for close collaboration between the relevant disciplines. This concept of geometallurgy arguably goes back to the earliest days of the exploitation of mineral deposits, through the mid-1500s to the beginning of the 20th century.This holistic and integrated view was diminished during the 20th century due to a number of factors which included the commencement and continuing upward trend of large-scale mining and the expansion in production, the rise of scientific and classical management theories and methodologies, increase in specialisation and the development of traditional project planning. The re-emergence of geometallurgy in the late 20th century required the relevant functional units and disciplines to collaborate as a team. This necessitates a common understanding that the geometallurgical program’s goals must be obtained, which requires clear and consistent communication, particularly with the modern trend of virtual teams.A multi-dimensional construct is proposed to assist in providing a consistent approach in the communication of the context and purpose of both general and specific geometallurgical programs, thus simplifying communication. This geometallurgical construct consists of the dimensions of process span, response knowledge, variability knowledge, spatial knowledge, application and project phase in relation to extraction process(es) applied to geological materials from a mineral deposit. These dimensions are then linked to the phase of mineral project development in which the geometallurgical program is being applied, which ranges from advanced exploration through to operational execution. This paper outlines the multi-dimensional construct with examples of how the context, purpose and scope of geometallurgical programs can be clearly delineated and communicated.

Planning for a circular economy allows for previously untapped market opportunities to be explored, resulting in new, innovative revenue generating opportunities, while also reducing environmental impacts. In particular, rare earth elements (REE) are in rising demand as they are key components of over 200 products across a wide range of applications (Xie et al, 2023) including renewable energy technologies. There is a geographical disparity in deposits, with China being the top producer, generating 70 per cent of global production in 2022 (Laboure, 2023). This single dominating source has created supply chain concentration and hence supply risks for other nations, providing a driver for finding alternative sources, such as mine-influenced water (MIW) and tailings. In this study, Isle presents a robust due diligence methodology for undertaking a global horizon scan into REE recovery technology, for a large mining company, from tailings decant water on a specific site. Previous studies of the tailings decant water at this site had shown potentially significant concentrations of both heavy and light REE, but challenges such as high flow, very low pH and high concentrations of iron had previously made recovery unfeasible. Due to these challenges, the horizon scan focused on technologies that had the potential for selective recovery, despite the challenges with water quality, and considered a range of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs). This included an adsorption-based process that has the potential to selectively separate individual REE, and a polymer based selective flocculation technology.

The AMIRA P266 æImproving Thickener TechnologyÆ series of projects has sought to provide a firm scientific basis for feedwell and thickener design, a requirement as pressures on water usage in the minerals industry increase. While advanced computational fluid dynamics modelling of feedwell processes has generated the most obvious and successful applications to improving the performance of operating units, such outcomes have drawn heavily on parallel studies into flocculation fundamentals. Central to this has been the development of a linear pipe reactor system that allows the kinetics of flocculated aggregate growth and rupture to be measured for thickener feeds under turbulent pipe flow conditions. This ensures much greater control of the intensity and duration of applied shear than is possible with conventional flocculation test procedures, offering insights into flocculation processes that would be otherwise hidden in time-averaged measurements.

The importance of reducing the moisture content of fine coal, the nature of the retained water and the means of its removal are discussed. A statistical technique, using a balanced block design, was used to isolate the significant factors determining water content of a coal filter cake, The most significant factor was particle size distribution. A simplex evolutionary operation (evop) was used to determine the optimal quantities of additives required to produce the lowest moisture content for a selected coal size. For this optimum condition (18.6 lb xÇ20 per 100 lb dry coal), additions of 0.045 lb magnesium ion, 0.0026 lb separan A.P. 30, and 0.098 lb aerosol O.T., per 100 lb dry coal were required. The work illustrated the uses of statistical evop technique for the determination of optimal conditions in industrial research projects.

Almost a quarter of a century since Bridges (1993) documented techniques for the assessment of ground conditions in a seminal paper in the Proceedings Second International Mining Geology Conference, the necessary role of the geologist in recording geotechnical data on exploration properties and in mines remains. Typically, the geologist is the first professional on the exploration property. Of course, most exploration properties don’t become mines. However, when a property does start to come together and form a coherent mineral deposit and professionals from across the minerals industry spectrum, including specialist geotechnical engineers, become increasingly involved, it remains the geologist who has the most intimate knowledge of the deposit. By association, that knowledge extends to the character of the rock mass.Throughout the various phases of prefeasibility, feasibility, construction and production, culminating in the mature mine, the knowledge of the rock mass held by the geologists continues to grow. In the current era of minimising cost and optimising profit, meeting the requirements and expectations of stakeholders ranging from fellow employees to investors, industry and financial regulators and the broader public, in a social environment where occupational health and safety concerns are of uppermost concern in every endeavour, the value of the geologists’ observations cannot be understated. Mines nowadays employ more geotechnical engineers than they did in the early 1990s when Bridges (1993) wrote his paper. More funds are available for specific geotechnical investigations of exploration properties and mines; none-the-less, those programs remain limited in their extent and there is a wealth of additional data available for collection with the appropriate training, at little additional effort. Fundamentally it is all about the numbers. Any hole not geotechnically logged is a hole that will need to be drilled again if the data is required. Any face, surface or underground, not geotechnically mapped is one that may need to be mapped a second time. That doesn’t mean every hole or every face. However, it is the proposition of this paper that the opportunity for additional geotechnical data to be gathered during traditional geological investigations is an opportunity that cannot be ignored. Occupational health and safety requirements demand that the geotechnical risks associated with mining are appropriately managed. Mining regulations in most Australian and overseas jurisdictions requires the consideration of geotechnical risk through formalised management plans. The Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code requires the consideration of modifying factors more than ever before. The benefit to be realised through improved geotechnical understanding by geologists on the ground leads to improved occupational health and safety, optimised reporting compliance, and improved financial and social outcomes for the exploration property and ultimately for the mine that follows.CITATION:Hills, P B, 2017. In the last decade of precious metal exploration, several important gold discoveries have conclusively demonstrated that epithermal gold deposits formed in what were once active geothermal areas. A significant deposit in this category is the Lihir Island discovery in the Tabar-Ferri volcanic island arc off the coast of New Ireland, Papua New Guinea. Within that arc are the Feni Islands where exploration by Esso PNG Inc. and City Resources Ltd. has been carried out since early 1984. On Ambitle Island in the Feni Group, an epithermal gold prospect located within a young caldera has been tested by diamond drilling. The drillholes intersected a boiling zone at depth beneath acid altered 'cap' rocks. The zone is 30-60 metres thick and comprises hydraulically fractured and mineralised lavas with gold grades of 1-7 g/t. The prospect is still an active geothermal area with current boiling in the zone tested. As on Lihir, the recent epithermal alteration and mineralisation overprints a relict prophyry system. On Ambitle and the adjacent Babase Island several other, cooler exciting gold prospects are currently being tested.

Toppling failure of a jointed rock slope was studied by using the distinct lattice spring model (DLSM). Compared with the classical discrete element model, the DLSM has the advantages of free calibration of micro-mechanical parameters and easy to represent discontinuities, and is more computationally efficient. In this work, the DLSM was used to investigate the toppling failure of jointed rock slopes. The numerical simulation was verified against experimental data from a centrifuge model test on a jointed rock slope. Both the horizontal deformations and failure pattern observed in the centrifuge test were reasonably reproduced using the DLSM. Then, the mechanism of the flexural toppling failure was studied numerically by using a parameter analysis. "One of the contributing factors to the extreme cost escalation in the first decade of the 21st century was the increase in the amount and cost of engineering work that went into studies and projects. Various reasons for this were identified, including unsatisfactory productivity due to a shortage of experienced/qualified engineers, the increased complexity and infrastructure requirements of many projects due to location, metallurgy that is more challenging and increasing environmental and social requirements. These conditions often led to unsatisfactory project results in terms of cost and schedule blowouts and created a loss of confidence – both internally and externally – in the industry’s ability to complete projects on time and on budget.Technical fundamentals aside, the experience and effectiveness of project teams has had, and continues to have, a major impact on project cost, schedule and ramp-up to nameplate capacity and operating parameters. There are unfortunately too many examples of where project teams have not been as effective as they could or should have been, all to the ultimate detriment of the project.Using the authors’ extensive experience on both owner’s and engineer’s teams, this paper discusses some of the main reasons for suboptimal team, and hence project, performance and offers thoughts on how best to build and maintain project teams.
