NASA’s Artemis III mission is expected to return astronauts to the surface to explore and sample the lunar volatiles by 2026. These volatiles are anticipated to provide scientific insights as to how the Moon was created and economic value to off-Earth operations. These same volatiles can pose health implications to astronauts and Earth based personnel handling lunar regolith samples. Using Australian, USA and NASA airborne contaminant exposure limits and the Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) measurements of lunar volatiles in the Cabeus crater ejecta, the minimum mass of lunar regolith that can be safely handled by humans on Earth and in spacecraft can be calculated. This analysis determined a 0.15 grams pure sample of Cabeus crater regolith within a cubic metre of air has enough volatiles to exceed safe working conditions, and 14.9 grams of pure Cabeus crater regolith per cubic metre of air can impact human life. The intent of this analysis is to assist safe handling and exposure calculations for the safe handling procedures of lunar regolith containing volatiles.

The tunnelling work to construct a sewage trunk line designed by the Sewage Bureau of Kobe City along north side slope of Rokko mountain range incorporated an all ground condition type (broad spectrum) TBM with slurry transport system with jet pump manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. Boring dia. of the tunnel measured to 2.0 m. The construction planning and implemen- tation were done by Ohbayashi Corporation, the general contractor. The heading way was 3342.4 m in overall length.; construction work ran from April '84 to June '85. The max. daily progress marked 31.9 m and the max. monthly progress 493.1 m according to the relevant record. The machine proceeded with the work under geological conditions featured with conglomerate, rhyolite, tuff breccia and slate, whereby soft soil zone mostly of clay was encountered in a limited area. In the latter case, however, steel segments were substituted for supporting steel ribs. The tunnel was routed beneath a meandering road with the result that more than 40% of overall length show a curvature of 50 to 200 m radius.

Australia had an active uranium mining industry in the 1950s with uranium oxide being supplied under contract to the atomic energy authorities of the U.K. and U.S.A. In the 1960s, when these con- tracts concluded, domestic production ceased, apart from Rum Jungle, whose production until 1971 was stockpiled. By the 1970s, the demand for uranium from the electrical utility industry had risen sharply and the effects on Australia were notable. The Mary Kath- leen mine re-opened in 1976 but, more significantly, exploration activity suddenly expanded with the re- sult that several world-standard deposits were locat- ed. Western world requirements for uranium based on increasing energy consumption and a changing energy mix, will warrant the development of Aust- ralia's resources. By 1985 our mines could be pro- ducing 9,500 tonnes of uranium oxide yearly and by 1995 the export value from uranium could reach that from wool. In terms of benefit to the community the economic rewards are considerable but, in terms of providing energy to the world, Australia's uranium is vital.

A mineral and chemical characterisation study was conducted on ilmenite-rich heavy mineral concentrates sourced from the western sector of the Eucla Basin in southern Australia. Test work involved using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron microprobe-based characterisation methods. Results showed considerable variability in the degree of ilmenite alteration between deposits with TiO2 contents varying from 53 - 63 wt per cent TiO2. Notwithstanding variability between individual deposits, the samples all had [Ti]/[Ti+Fe] ratios >0.5 consistent with a mineral assemblage of hydrated ilmenite or the hydrated, Ti-rich alteration phase pseudorutile (Fe3+2-x Ti3O9-3x (OH)3x). Accessory phases consisted of rutile (primary and secondary), zircon, aluminosilicates, quartz, Fe oxyhydroxides and spinels. Results for the most altered material are broadly comparable with data for ilmenite concentrates from the eastern margin of the basin. The mineralogy of the western Eucla Basin concentrates and the minor element composition of the ilmenite grains suggest they could be upgraded to synthetic rutile by a modified Becher process.

Average annual growth in consumption of primary energy in Australia over the past ten years has been 5.5% compared to a world average of 4.1%. Over the next ten years growth rate is expected to increase to 6% per annum due largely to the rapid development in the mineral processing industry. By the end of the 1970's natural gas is expected to supply more than 9% of Australia's, primary energy market. Coal will supply 40% and petroleum products 47%. Nuclear energy will make its appearance but-will only make a small contribution in the period. Australia has adequate reserves of natural gas and coal to supply its needs in the 1970's and beyond. However the newly developed reserves of crude, while supplying 60-70% of requirements-in the initial years; will need regular and sizable additions if they are to .keep pace with the expanding consumption. For Australia to become self sufficient in the period 1970-1990 it is estimated *that new discoveries-will need to approximate. ten times the volume of recoverable reserves found in Australia to date. .

GEOSCAN on belt analysers have been widely utilised in iron ore for nearly two decades. Since the first installations in 2003, the availability of accurate and reliable grade data has become standardised across iron ore mines in the Northern Cape in South Africa, where various streams are monitored continuously to ensure the optimal functioning of plants. Assmang Khumani has been at the forefront of technology adoption, and has implemented 19 GEOSCANs at various locations throughout the plant, monitoring run-of-mine, stockyard feed, beneficiation plant feeds, and products. Over the years, collaborative advances in the technology have allowed for numerous benefits and gains to be made. In recent times, there has been a concerted effort on the development of analysis for phosphorus in the material flows, and based on Scantech’s experience in the phosphate industry, this element has now been calibrated to achieve statistically acceptable and repeatable accuracies for real time analysis of this element on many of Khumani’s GEOSCAN analysers. This paper provides an overview of GEOSCAN use at Khumani, while focusing on the development of phosphorus analysis. A case study of analysis results is presented for a range of analysers that have been calibrated for this element, as well as a discussion on the benefits obtained as a result of this analysis.

The process of innovation is triggered by employees throughout the organisation in a collaborative manner.Problem solving becomes a core competence of the consultancy. A multidisciplined approach arrives at superior solutions that are rigorous, holistic, achievable and often novel. It allows the mining consultancy to extract the most from a very talented and experienced team.This paper highlights the advantages of an organic structure for a mining consultancy and how to implement such a structure. Geothermal anomalies of different types occur within distinct geological/structural settings in Papua New Guinea. According to R.F. Herring, geothermal occurrences in Papua New Guinea can be classified into two types, those related to vulcanism (Lihir, Rabaul and other series of islands along the volcanic arc) and those resulting from a regional heat flow probably caused by radiogenic sources, for instance those in the Wau/Bulolo area. The manifestation of this potential source of energy generally coincides with either converging or diverging tectonic plate boundaries. Previous inventories on thermal waters were carried out by vulcanologists from the Rabaul Observatory in the early 1960s. However, these studies rarely included chemical analyses of water and gas emissions and the investigations were carried out in an ad hoc manner, generally as a secondary activity. The most recent investigation on thermal waters was conducted on Lihir Island in connection with the development of the open pit gold mine. These studies included detailed exploratory drilling to a maximum depth of 730 m, and a water chemistry isotopic sampling and analysis programme. The hydrothermal waters were not considered as an energy source but as a hazard during the development stage of the mine. Nevertheless, the geothermal anomaly observed at Lihir includes hot springs emerging along the coastal zones with temperatures that approach 100¦C, steam, and thermal borehole waters with temperatures that exceed 200¦C. Chemical analysis results of thermal fluids from Rabaul, Talasea and other areas in Papua New Guinea generally show high total dissolved solids and low pH. In contrast, recent results from the deepest and hottest thermal source at Lihir shows a neutral pH, a Na-CI-SO4 composition and temperatures above 200¦C. Despite the concentration of chloride being similar to that of sea water, other chemical results and stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopic compositions of thermal fluids imply the source to be mixture of local meteoric water and deep thermal water rather than sea water. Results of geothermal modelling suggests that the total geothermal uptlow is equivalent to 54 MW.

Al ores arriving at the works which contain more than 3% sulphur, together with all sands and other fine residues, are delivered to the roasting department. Those that are in a coarse condition are first sent to the crushing plant, consisting of 15 in. x 9 in. jaw crushers and two No. 5 Krupp mills. The ore is here crushed through a quarter mesh screen. Any pyritic concentrates high in sulphur are given a preliminary roasting, to bring the sulphur contents down to about 12 % and the roasted material is delivered to the H. H. charge-making bins. Here the various ores, sands, residues, roasted pyrites, together with about 12 % of limestone, are made up into I-ton charges in hopper trucks with bottom discharge. The trucks are elevated by hydraulic lifts to a tramway running over the roasting furnaces, and the contents are dropped into hoppers over each furnace, from whence the mixture is fed into the centre of each furnace by means of a Challenge ore-feeder.

GRD Macraes Limited, owners and operators of the Macraes and Reefton Gold Project in New Zealand, have taken up the challenge of sustainably producing in excess of 300 000 ounces per annum within five years.GRD Macraes is well on target to achieve the forecast of 170 000 oz at a cash cost of A$310/oz for the 2002 financial year, with our Reefton operation set to add about 70 000 û 80 000 ounces per annum from late 2003.At the end of 2001 GRD Macraes Limited had resources of 5.5 million oz with reserves at 2.8 million oz.

The thick coal seams of the South Maitland field are the only ones in New South Wales which have been worked extensively to heights beyond 3.8 m (nominal "thin" seam height). Under shallow cover only minor difficulties were experienced in developing first workings but later the widespread occurrence of incidents of spontaneous combustion and the growth of "creeps" extending over large areas gave the field its own peculiar problems. As the mines have driven under deeper cover extreme difficulties in forming development roadways have been experi- enced. Various methods have been adopted in an attempt to overcome the problems of the field.

When an iron orebody nears its end of life, the extracted material can become increasingly problematic to handle. Higher moisture content occurs as larger portions of originally-below-water-table material is mined, which in some deposits is accompanied by further changes in physical and/or chemical properties present along the edges of the orebody. Plant delays related to problematic material have affected all of BHP’s mining hubs to various degrees. Following the recent successful work in Yandi, where the development of an index to quantify the handleability of channel iron ore deposits resulted in an increase in extracted volumes and an extension to the expected life-of-mine, the value of implementing similar indices for bedrock iron ore deposits has been recognised. A materials handling index has been developed by combining observed empirical relationships between material properties and processing plant performance. Indices for each deposit were further refined and optimised by implementing a back-testing strategy which facilitated an understanding of what weighting or scaling each of the contributing components should carry to yield the highest success rate of predicting actual delays at a given plant. Currently materials handling indices are deployed to all mine sites and are made available in block models as well as calculated for individual blasthole and production samples. Values in block models are obtained by predicting the required properties using machine learning models, whereas hyperspectral data is used to ‘measure’ some of those properties on a sample level. This paper discusses the work that has been undertaken to obtain materials handling indices, the testing that has been done to optimise them, and what processes have been developed to ensure the best metrics are being used in the different planning and scheduling horizons to optimise extraction.

Large deposits present computational challenges to todayÆs commercial orebody modelling systems that are based on conventional block models. We describe a system that is specifically engineered to model and visualise large deposits. Central to the system is linear octree encoding of conventional block models and real-time conversion of three-dimensional (3D) meshes to linear octrees. We provide both methodological treatment and practical experience in implementing such a system. A commercial implementation is also presented to demonstrate the validity of the approach.

High specification Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) has been successfully applied to conveyed flows at iron ore operations since 2002 to representatively measure ore quality for improved quality management and process control. While the PGNAA technique has changed little since that time, significant improvements have been made in measurement capability. Elements previously unable to be measured well or at all using this technique are now measurable and one of these is phosphorus. Aluminium and magnesium are also key elements in addition to calcium and silicon in determining sinter basicity in ironmaking. Other elements measured routinely in iron ores include iron, carbon, potassium, sulfur and manganese. The benefits of representative measurement cannot be overstated as iron ore mining operations in South Africa, Europe, Australia, Asia and the Americas have discovered. The technology is applicable to any conveyed flow where elemental analysis in real time assists with quality management, from raw materials in ironmaking through to scrap steel in steelmaking and coal quality for coke-making. Major benefits are realised when raw material processing is optimised and this often includes diversion of material meeting a required quality so it can bypass unnecessary processing. This includes waste rock which can be diverted from a plant feed stream in 30 sec increments or ore that meets product quality being diverted to bypass beneficiation. Analysers are successfully utilised to identify ore types that assist with upgrade optimisation in jig plants; measuring feed, product and discard flows to also account for metal content. Product flows to stockpiles help manage production flows and stockpile qualities for different products and assist in blending ores into trains or ships to confirm specification compliance. Technologies can be used in magnetite processing but are predominantly used in hematite and goethite ore processing operations. The paper details examples of the above applications at various operational sites providing estimates of economic benefit as well as operational improvements.

This paper details the implementation of a new type of grade control system at the Black Star open cut mine in Mount Isa, Queensland. It explores the site requirements for grade control, what as previously in place and what the site required moving forward. It also details some of the features of the system installed and why it was chosen over other grade control systems available. Black Star open cut mine has been in operation since late 2004, and was developed to extract the surface extents of the Ag-Pb-Zn mineralisation previously mined in the Isa Lead Mine. Black Star is currently mining seven distinct orebodies in and around active void hazard zones and hence, its grade control requirements are very detailed and complex. The implementation of a new system to manage the model update and block out processes was, therefore, of critical importance to the site and required a detailed understanding of the requirements of the entire mining team from drilling through to geology, survey and production. Having previously run the grade control process using site specific æblack boxÆ scripts and macros, Black Star needed to implement a more open, auditable and flexible system, which allowed the geologists to control the process and make strategic changes as the situation demanded. MineSightÆs Axis Grade Control, with its flexible, generic framework for managing the process, met these demands. Seven papers included in Session 8 of the Third International Mine Water Congress under the heading "Achievements in Mine Water Management & Research" have been reviewed. Only one paper, a case study by Masters on biological treatment of inorganically polluted effluent, has any connection with research in the sense of seeking new, generally applicable knowledge which would advance the frontiers of mine water management. The remainder deal with various aspects of the management of mine water ranging from investigation of the geology of a specific aquifer system through operating dewatering systems to the management of specific effluent disposal problems.

"*This is an abstract only* Geometallurgical initiatives have demonstrated considerable value to operations that have trialled them. However, it is extremely difficult for these initiatives to become properly embedded into the operations and for that value to be realised on an ongoing basis.This paper will explore some of the historical reasons why this is the case. Some of these reasons include the limited tools available to manage an integrated operation. Sustainability is one of those fuzzy words like innovation: everybody has an idea what it means, but if one starts asking for concise definitions then it becomes clear that everybody puts their own nuance on the meaning of these words. It’s not because these are difficult words per se, but rather because our understanding of them is highly dependent on the environment we work, live and play in. To remove any ambiguity and aligned with the risks that are faced by the human population today, the definition for sustainability that will apply for this paper is: generating value in the short term without destroying value in the long term.CITATION:Scholtz, P, 2018. During the period May to July 2003, East Mine overcored and recovered from goaf edges a total of 55 1.8 metre CVX grade bolts to analyse installation quality. Some 95 per cent of the pneumatically (hand-held Gophers) installed bolts show gloving, with 75 per cent showing gloving of at least one-third of the effective bolt length. Hydraulically installed (continuous miner-mounted bolting rigs) bolts show in some areas less gloving but do have significant unencapsulation lengths. Trials of newly developed bolt end profiles show considerable improvements in eliminating gloving but do show variable and unacceptable variations of unencapsulation.
