The tangible effects of leakage are presented graphically, and a technique for quantifying the leakage characteristics of a ventilation column using the æSolveÆ capabilities of a common spreadsheet is demonstrated. A case study of a working decline in Western Australia is used to demonstrate the potential for more realistic design of development ventilating systems, and for more cost effective management of the condition of the duct.

This paper discusses pore pressures in the embankments of tailings dams by comparing real world data with common design assumptions. Assessment of pore pressures has implications on material behaviour interpretation from CPT investigations and, therefore, on the design. For example, the assumption of hydrostatic pressure is conservative for limit equilibrium stability analyses but may be un-conservative in assessing the potential for contractive behaviour and strength loss during shearing. This paper presents some real world data, the investigation methods to determine the pore pressures, and subsequent interpretation of CPT data and material parameters such as the state parameter. It also examines the design implications of assuming a hydrostatic pressure distribution, by comparing results from that assumption with those obtained using the real pore pressures.CITATION:Johns, D and Murray, L, 2018. A model for predicting dust plume dispersion from blasting operations using the Eulerian mathematical algorithm has been developed. This model considers atmospheric stability, and wind velocity and direction for computing dust concentrations at different distances from the blast. Software has been developed which simulates the movement of a dust plume at a given horizontal distance from the blast location and time elapsed after the blast. The concentration of dust is also given in vertical planes. It takes into account ground profile and atmospheric conditions such as temperature, pressure, humidity, wind velocity, wind direction and shear. Experiments were carried out in two limestone mines to calibrate the accuracy of the predictions made by such model. High volume dust samplers were used to collect dust samples. Difficulties encountered in satisfactory dust sampling and quantification of results have been described.

In both exploration and mining, the laboratory is often seen as a cost rather than a profit centre. The aim in most mining companies is to increase profits by reducing costs, so the budget for the laboratory is under constant pressure.There is another option; to see the laboratory as the brain of the operation. By lifting the status of the laboratory and treating it as a profit centre, mine costs may be reduced in other ways, e.g. reduction in milling costs. This change of status will require investing more capital in better equipment, more training for employees and more employees to carry out project research.There are many examples of major costs being incurred because of inadequate laboratory work. Conversely, by spending more money on laboratories and their activities, overall costs can be reduced or profits enhanced.

Improving the safety culture and performance of any operation is a fundamental goal of every mine operator. Methods of implementing, or changing a culture have developed from the early methods of operant conditioning, for example rewarding crews for achieving nominated safety milestones i.e. 3 months Lost Time Injury (LTI) free through to the current model of engaging a workforce through education and empowerment. As a large scale and mature operation with multiple contractors, Telfer has been exposed to numerous programs throughout its history. This has provided the opportunity to build on and complement these systems by integrating key elements from each. SAFE 360° is a new approach developed to engage the workforce in a holistic approach to encourage positive behaviours across all facets of an individual’s life which results in a focus on situational awareness at all times, rather than being workplace specific. It is based on three key modules: • Emotional Intelligence • Mindfulness • Situational Awareness Each module has a series of modules that help enhance the individual’s sense of self, leading to an ability to self-reflect and self-manage whilst empowering them with the moral courage to challenge their peers to raise standards. Since commencing this SAFE 360° behavioural safety risk management journey in November 2017, we have witnessed a change in the way our workforce engages with each other, their workplace and with management. There has been an increase in hazard perception, identification and ownership of issues, and we have seen a significant decrease in site TRIFR rate from 13.7 to 5.7 (as of April 2019). This paper will provide an overview of the program, how it has been implemented, case studies to demonstrate outcomes and KPIs used to measure effectiveness.

The mining industry has been slow at adopting the latest management philosophies from other industry sectors, such as manufacturing, and in retrospect, with good cause. With the plethora of three-letter-acronyms such as TQM, JIT, TPM and now, BPR each touted as the panacea for profit improvement, you wonder if you must choose one or attempt to embrace them all! In truth, each new insight into organisational behaviour bears some investigation. This paper looks at the underlying principles and elements of successful change strategies, and how several mining companies, including coal mines, in Australia, Chile and Canada, are applying these principles to their operations. These examples illustrate the need to think radically, and to view mining as an overall process delivering value to the customer rather than a collection of functional silos. They also show that often, a continuous improvement initiative is not enough when a fundamental redesign, a paradigm shift, is needed for a performance breakthrough.

Mining organisations grapple with the same problems year after year, wasting incredible amounts of time and money. According to estimates from the International Labour Organization (ILO), over one million work-related deaths occur annually, and hundreds of millions of workers suffer from workplace accidents and occupational exposure to hazardous substances worldwide. Many accident reports cite human failure as a primary cause (Busse and Johnson, 1998). The workers at the Bhopal chemical plant pumped methyl isocyanate into a leaking tank (Morehouse and Subramaniam, 1986). On 3 December 1984, more than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, immediately killing at least 3800 people and causing significant morbidity and premature death for many thousands more. The company involved in what became the worst industrial accident in history immediately tried to dissociate itself from legal responsibility (Broughton, 2005). Australia is not spared from safety problems either (Lucas, 2022). The ILO Convention 176 (1995) as a response provides that national law should inter alia provide for the supervision of safety and health in mines; the inspection of mines by designated inspectors of the competent authority; the procedures for reporting and investigating of fatal and serious accidents; the compilation and publication of statistics on accidents, occupational diseases and dangerous occurrences; the competent authority to suspend or restrict mining activities on safety and health grounds until conditions giving rise to the suspension are addressed; and worker consultation on matters related to safety and health in mines. This has assisted in getting enough data to define the magnitude of the problem to the mining sector.

A stibnite flotation concentrate from Costerfield in Victoria was found to contain 63.3 g/t An while its sizing distribution indicated that 81.6 per cent of the material was less than 38 ¦m. A 24 hour cyanidation test by a standard bottle roll method recovered 15 per cent of this gold. Pressure cyanidation under conditions of ambient temperature, 40 per cent pulp density, an oxygen pressure of 1000 - 2000 kPa and an initial NaCN concentration of 15 kg/t, resulted in a recovery of 65 pe cent of the gold after only two hours of leaching. Aqueous pressure preoxidation of the concentrate followed by the standard bottle roll cyanidation realised gold recoveries as high as 96 per cent. The iron ore industry in Australia has, in recent years, experienced an unprecedented growth phase. But now that major expansions are moving into the operation phase, new challenges have emerged. Whereas initial planning may involve a few modelling studies, ongoing performance monitoring and improvement requires a different, more intense approach. This is especially important in the face of changing factors such as commodity prices, exchange rates and labour markets. Response time is key. As a mining operation proceeds from initial planning to daily operations, the time window for analysis shortens, going from months to weeks to days as the business matures.Simulation models and analysis tools are typically built and run by specialists in the planning phase, but then what? The investment has been made, but realised only once. What if further analysis could be carried out in-house, re-using existing models using up-to-the-minute data? Can we create virtual mines that run in parallel to live operations that allow computers to identify areas of a value creation or operational improvement? These questions can be answered by the innovative application of big data, simulation and predictive analytics. The future will be having this all integrated into one platform that offers, for the first time, an opportunity for non-experts to apply existing modelling and analysis assets – combined with live data – to deliver support for continuous improvement, and the ability to respond quickly to external changes in the best possible way, before they become big problems. These techniques will represent a step change in the ability for operations to maximise efficiency and will underpin the intelligent operations of the future. Prefabricated waterproofing sheet membranes are extremely complicated to install in underground sections with complex geometries and, despite being already subjected to quality tests in the factory, the installed membrane often exhibits leakages due to different reasons. Main sources of leaks are the required high amount of welding seams and damages caused during installation of reinforcement, as well as overstretching and poorly installed secondary concrete linings. Also the design of the tunnel lining is strongly influenced and limited by the use of prefabricated waterproofing sheet membranes. The use of sprayed waterproofing membranes for more than a decade has contributed to durability and serviceability, as well as to increasing sustainability of tunnel linings. The presented sprayed waterproofing membrane MasterSeal 345 is an advantageous alternative to prefabricated waterproofing sheet membranes under typical tunnelling conditions, especially in geometrically complex areas, such as in lay-by niches, cross passages and crossover caverns, where installation of conventional waterproofing membranes is inherently difficult, and locating leaks is challenging. This membrane has been successfully used in underground projects with different waterproofing design concepts and under diverse hydro-geological and environmental conditions for over a decade. It provides tunnel designers with different options and optimisation for the design of the tunnel concrete lining. Additional advantages to owners, contractors and designers from the use of the sprayed membrane include flexibility in the design, increased productivity and flexibility in working programming, as well as improved logistics, resulting in significant program and cost savings and reduced long-term maintenance costs. This paper describes the key features of this sprayed waterproofing membrane, its application range and limitations, the waterproofing concept, design options and related benefits. As open pit mining of a deposit deepens, the cost of extraction may increase up to a threshold where transitioning to mining through underground methods is more profitable. This paper provides an approach to identifying an optimal depth at which a mine should transition from open pit to underground mining. The value of a set of candidate transition depths is investigated by optimising the production schedules for each depth’s unique open pit and underground operations. By considering the sum of the open pit and underground mining portions’ value along with the cost of transitioning corresponding to each candidate transition depth, the optimal transition depth can be identified. The optimisation model presented is based on a stochastic integer program that integrates geological uncertainty. As an input, the stochastic integer program utilises a set of several stochastic simulations that represent equally probable scenarios of the mineral resource. This group of simulations describes the uncertainty in the deposit, while the optimiser aims to maximise value based on discounted profits of both the open pit and underground components of the deposit.CITATION:MacNeil, J and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. The sizing of a starter dam for a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) involves balancing many competing demands. It should cost as little as possible, be high enough to store tailings until the first raise can be constructed, it must be able to contain water safely, and it must be designed in such a way that the long-term integrity of the higher raises are not compromised, among other things. In addition to these demands there is the complication of the behaviour of the process plant, and the tailings during commissioning. Variations in slurry density, excess water in the TSF, initial settled density of the tailings, reliability issues, and beach slopes above and below water can all impact the way the tailings beaches are developed and ultimately impact the ability of the starter dyke to contain the required volume of tailings and water.The conventional approach to the design of a TSF starter dyke is to begin looking at the elevation required for a set of deterministic design parameters, find ways to reduce the size or volume of it as much as possible to reduce cost, and then possibly look at the sensitivity of some of the input parameters. This paper discusses a stochastic modelling approach for starter dykes that allows a wide range of design inputs to be simulated quickly, with an envelope of possible results produced. The sensitivity to different parameters can also be examined to understand which design inputs have the biggest impact on the required dyke sizing. By integrating the 3D TSF modelling tool Muk3D with GoldSim, it will be demonstrated how a wide range of scenarios can be evaluated and how that information can be used to make better decisions about the selection of design options.CITATION:Cooper, C A and Suter, G A, 2018. The Ernest Henry Mine is a copper-gold open pit operation situated in northwest Queensland, Australia. It is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper, with a current throughput of 11 Mtpa, however, open pit operations are scheduled to cease in mid 2011. The deposit dips approximately 45º and extends for at least another 400 m vertically below the final 530 m deep pit design.Construction and development of a sublevel caving (SLC) operation beneath the open pit was approved in December 2009. The feasibility design requires 39 km of development to be completed prior to production, which will commence in the fourth quarter of 2011. Initial ore production will be trucked and will increase to 3 Mtpa by the end of 2012, after which a hoisting shaft will be used. Ore production will then increase to 5 Mtpa in 2013 and ultimately to 6 Mtpa in 2016.Two 3000 kilo watt of refrigeration (kW(R)) modular refrigeration plants will be installed, as well as two 1600 kW mixed-flow fans capable of a combined flow rate of 780 m3/s at a total pressure loss across the mine of 2000 Pa. The main fans will be installed underground and will exhaust into the base of the pit.The following challenges were faced in the development of the ventilation and refrigeration network:•a relatively steep geothermal gradient,•tropical ambient conditions,•working under a wide pit shell, and•a large underground trucking fleet prior to shaft commissioning.A considerable number of ventilation studies were conducted with later studies extensively using Ventsim Visual™ mine ventilation software to complete the design process of the ventilation and refrigeration networks, including the comparison of several alternative designs. The paper focuses on design challenges prior to the commissioning of the hoisting shaft, and discusses resistance optimisation and occupational hygiene-related design parameters, such as heat and diesel emissions, production level ventilation, main fan selection and location, and refrigeration requirements.

Marcobre SAC (Marcobre) is developing the Mina Justa copper mine project, located in the Ica region of Peru. The Mina Justa IOCG orebody comprises of a sulfide mass overlain by an oxide cap with a sharp transitional zone between the sulfide and oxide masses. The primary target metal is copper, but there are minor amounts of gold and silver. The oxide will be treated by HPGR, crushing and vat leaching, whereas the sulfide will be treated by HPGR, milling and froth flotation. The processing selections are due to some unusual ore characteristics which have required relatively unconventional solutions.Vat leaching was chosen over heap leaching and other processes after detailed trade-off studies found it to be the most attractive, primarily due to the high acid consumption of the ore. The sulfide flotation produces a wide range of concentrate grades due to the complex nature of the mineralogy. The selection of HPGR circuits for both the oxide and sulfide ore is due to the extremely hard and competent nature of the deposit. Stawell Gold Mines (SGM) is an underground mining operation located in Victoria, Australia. The mining method employed is long hole retreat stoping, utilising up and downholes and artificial concrete pillars. Stawell is currently mining the Golden Gift and Magdala orebodies.Access to the Magdala and Golden Gift deposits is via 6.0 m wide by 5.5 m high declines developed at a gradient of one in eight to one in seven from the surface to a depth of 1500 m, with a planned depth of 1650 m. From the declines, cross cutting drives are developed to intersect the orebodies. Orebodies in the Gift system are discrete lodes which are generally mined from a bottom up centre retreat to minimise geotechnical stresses.Ore development fronts are currently located between 1000 m and 1500 m below surface, with all ore being hauled to the surface using a fleet of 60 tonne underground trucks. With the use of conventional pyrotechnic long period (LP) delays, broken rock of combined ore and waste is thrown 10 m from the face and the materials hauled to the surface. The majority of the mullock from development is consumed in the underground as backfill.With the use of Orica Mining Services eDev™ Electronic Blasting System for Tunnelling, the waste is thrown up to 40 m from the face, while majority of the ore is left 5 - 10 m from the face, effectively segregating ore and waste. This enables significant recovery of gold values with minimal loss and significantly reduced dilution. By using this technique in ore drives with a 30:70 waste to ore ratio, SGM is able to haul 24 000 tonnes less mullock to the surface annually. Resue mining is applied to narrow vein headings and gives a 40 per cent grade increase at the faces as well as increasing the economic footprint of development. This will also contribute to an improved grade profile for the year from 3.98 - 4.16 g/t Au and allow extra capacity for ore haulage from stoping and for milling.This paper describes the application and the successful blast outcomes achieved using the eDev™ Electronic Blasting Systems for resue mining at SGM. Results to date, since commencement in March 2010, have been achieving significant benefits in terms of ore grade as confirmed by geologists grab sample grades. Face advance have also shown improvement with better breakage of perimeter holes giving improved face profile. These benefits are delivering increased productivity and safety performance when compared to other resue firing techniques.

The gravity-induced stirred mill such as the TowerMill is an energy-efficient grinding solution used in secondary, tertiary, and regrinding duties in the mineral processing concentrator. The interest in this technology is emerging, with more than 300 mills installed globally in various grinding duties and commodities for the last 30 years. Although the technology is matured, there are still opportunities for improvement and the development of new knowledge to improve its circuit energy efficiency and reduce water consumption. Recent studies show that a combination of stress intensity, ore hardness, slurry density, and mill feed configuration can be used to evaluate the performance of the grinding circuit. A recent pilot-scale TowerMill test work at various stress intensities shows that a lower operating work index and size-specific energy were achieved at higher agitator tip speed and using medium size grinding media. These outcomes were confirmed through several site trials. A smaller 17 mm grinding media has reduced the operating work index and size-specific energy by 18 per cent and 11 per cent, respectively, compared to the 20 mm in a magnetite concentrator. Moreover, the conversion from top feed to bottom feed configuration has reduced the operating work index and size-specific energy by 13 per cent and 37 per cent, respectively. The circulating load was reduced by 34–38 per cent, leading to a reduction in the dilution water consumption in the hydrocyclone feed sump by 20 per cent. A variable frequency drive offers flexibility to change the stress intensities on the TowerMill, where a 35 per cent reduction in specific energy was achieved when the ore became soft. This paper explores the potential design and operating strategies that can be implemented to enhance the energy efficiency, reduce water consumption and reduce CO2 emissions in the circuit and finally evaluate its impact on the total cost of ownership.

The Mt Keith Mining Alliance operates a fleet of large capacity hydraulic face shovels and more than 40 X 240 t capacity haul trucks to deliver annual production in excess of 40 Mbcm per annum. The Mt Keith Nickel mine is currently operating at a depth to 300 m below surface with a planned final depth of the order of 500 m. As is the case with any large open pit managing the health of the workforce on continuous shift operations is of critical importance to achieving outstanding safety and production outcomes. Fatigue management at Mt Keith is effectively managed by the personnel operating the mining equipment, with assistance and understanding of the management team and supervisors. The program has been driven through the introduction of Fatigue Champions and a comprehensive management plan that includes education, individual health plans and the use of new technologies. Mt Keith has been instrumental in trialling new technology which assists in monitoring fatigue in operations personnel. Insight into these developments is provided in the context of the overall fatigue management plan. The field trials of the OptAlert(TM) system and how it assists in measuring fatigue is explained. The implications for individual operators and the context for a fleet wide approach to fatigue management is also discussed. Mt Keith has recently completed the second phase of trials with the result that this new and exciting technology is being considered for adoption globally across BHP BillitonÆs open pit mining operations.

PT Freeport Indonesia is completing the first underground gyratory crusher excavation at their Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine located in the mountains of Jayawijaya, District of West Papua, Indonesia. DMLZ is an underground block cave mine with an expected output of 80 000?t/d and a scheduled production start in 2015.In order to deliver crushed ore to the mill through the existing conveyor belt, the DMLZ block cave mine will construct two 1000?kW 1.6?×?2.3?m gyratory crushers with their own respective ore flow conveying systems underground. Each crusher is composed of top, middle, and bottom chambers with an ore bin. This system includes a series of high capacity conveyors approximately 5 km in length including transfer stations and support facilities.The development methodology required a combination of lateral development by jumbo drilling machines and vertical development by mechanised raise climbers (MRC) due to the complexity of the chamber design.This paper will discuss the project scope, design and development methodology, ground conditions, innovative survey controls, and the challenges faced due to the remote location.CITATION:Hernandez, E, Kusumohastuti, W and Agustian, I, 2014. "Recent underground coal mine incidents have again raised the issue of: under what circumstanceis it safe for personnel to re-enter the mine? Mine rescue guidelines make recommendations aboutthe limits in terms of the circumstances, lives at risk, no lives at risk and training exercises. Theseare based upon percentages of the upper and lower explosive limits. Many factors infl uencesett ing limits for safe re-entry. These include: the representativeness of the sampling location(s),the rapidity of gett ing an underground sample analysed and the rate of change of the atmospherebeing monitored. Value judgements based upon these parameters will then infl uence the sett ing ofa trigger point based upon per cent explosibility. This raises the question of how the percentage ofthe lower or upper explosive limit is established. It is easy to defi ne this when the sampling pointdata sit on the fresh air limit line. However - what value is used when the sample sits somewherein the body of an explosibility diagram? This paper explores the various options and illustratesvarious pitfalls and problems that are faced in making such a determination. These include howthe data are represented and the assumed knowledge of those doing the interpretation."

Work to date has shown that the use of Al2O3:SiO2 ratios is suitable for identifying potential gibbsite bearing samples. Subsequent confirmatory XRD analysis helps to refi ne this initial identification. Based on these methods, gibbsite has been mapped in two common settings:1. along steeply dipping faults, or2. in association with stratigraphic contacts where one unit is aluminous (eg dolerite dyke).On a microscale, the samples studied illustrate an association between haematite, and to a lesser extent goethite, and gibbsite. In these samples the dominant forms of haematite are discrete crystalline phases of either microplaty haematite or euhedral martite. Two dominant forms of gibbsite were observed:1. vein style gibbsite that cross-cuts (or infill’s cracks) in goethite ± martite iron oxide associations, or2. gibbsite intimately intergrown with and forming a matrix to microplaty haematite.Some of the gibbsite microstructures observed suggest that it may have formed during a very hydrous, possibly hypogene, stage of the deposit genesis. The presence of this crystalline gibbsite, and in particular its occasionally euhedral form, suggests that aluminium was at some stage remobilised, at least locally, and then precipitated from solution as gibbsite. These observations suggest that these has been a phase of gibbsite precipitation that may have had a close but complex relationship with regards to the timing of the mineralisation processes, rather than formation as a result of late stage lateritic weathering.
