Mexican epithermal deposits can be broadly grouped into two types based on their contained metals, distribution, associated igneous rocks and fluid inclusion compositions. Silver-gold deposits (e.g. Tayoltita) mostly occur in the western part of northern Mexico where host rocks consist of Eocene, intermediate composition volcanic and intrusive rocks; fluid inclusion studies indicate that mineralizing fluids were _10 eq. wt. % NaCl). The distribution of these two deposit types, crosscutting major major crustal sutures, and the close spatial-temporal relationships between mineralization and magmatism, together suggest that magmatic processes were more important in the formation of mineralizing solutions, as a source of both ligands and metals, than the segments of crust hosting deposits.

The foam behaviour of low molecular weight polypropylene glycols (PPG) was investigated as a function of concentration and molecular weight (190 - 2000 g mol-1). For each polypropylene glycol, foam stability increases with concentration and passes through a maximum, beyond which foamability is suppressed as the solubility limit of the glycol is exceeded and droplets of glycol form. Light scattering data as well as static and dynamic surface tension results provide the key information leading to these interpretations. A maximum in foamability was observed for the PPG molecules with increasing molecular weight (caused by a change in molecular conformation at the interface). This suppresses the Marangoni effect and leads to a decrease in foam stability.

This paper refers to the open cut mining practice developed at Western Mining Corporation's Kalgoorlie Gold Operations (K.G.O.). Mining activity was centred attwo areas, namely W.M.C.'s Siberia "Sand King" and"Missouri" open cuts plus W.M.C.'s "Great Boulder" and K.M.A.'s "Horshoe" and "Morrison -Hannan's Star" open cuts in Fimiston.Kalgoorlie Gold Operations was set up initially to look after W.M.C.'s open cut interests in and about the Kalgoorlie area. The first mine commenced was, the Sand King open cut, approx 75 km NW of Kalgoorlie. it was here that the requirement for a highly selective form of mining first became apparent.

"Brazil is the sixth worldwide producer of aluminum and Votorantim (Metals) has been operating three bauxite open pit mines in a particular way of working. In those the deposits occur on the top of hills, under forest, coffee, eucalyptus plantation or pasture area.The deposits are not large and normally mining takes an average of two months to be completed before starting the rehabilitation process, which demands a good strategy in mining planning to achieve the production goals.The benefit function developed to select feasible areas uses, beyond production costs, fees from the owner by using their area and rehabilitation cost. Both are based on land use and occupation field survey data. In this process each area with different land use receives a specific rehabilitation cost as input into a block model.Once the selection is made the mining schedule begins, taking into consideration the following premise: the orebody needs to be mined in a short period of time because during this time, the surface owners receive from Votorantim a compensation based on the expected profits from their plantation or pasture, plus royalties related to the ore amount existing in their area.Not all operations have waste dumps. Waste is pushed down by bulldozers to the lower part of the ore border. After loading and transporting ore, the waste is handled back to the mined area to fit the topography. With this step concluded, the mined area is directed to the environmental team who, alongside university partners, develop land reclamation to return them to their owners, eg in 2011, 110 ha were rehabilitated of which 29 per cent is native forest.Votorantim closes many mined areas a year and currently the entire mine planning considers this particular way of operation, making profit with minimum interference with the community and the environment.CITATION:Artioli, P, Kato, M S, Romanel, A and Piermatei, M P, 2012. The use of water covers is a globally-applied method for minimising acid rock drainage (ARD) and metal leaching. Although the subaqueous disposal of potentially acid-generating materials has been shown to effectively limit ARD, under certain scenarios, metal remobilisation can occur at circum-neutral pH. The following paper presents data from four case studies in which metal mobility from submerged mine waste resulted in degradation to water quality in the overlying water cover. Subcentimetre resolution profiling of dissolved constituents across the tailings-water interface (dialysis arrays), in conjunction with mineralogical information, were used to elucidate the controls governing metal mobility. The data illustrate four pathways of metal remobilisation, including: the release of zinc via the oxidative remineralisation of metal-rich organics at the tailings-water interface; enhanced remobilisation of arsenic as a result of anthropogenic eutrophication; the release of copper resulting from the pH-driven dissolution of treatment sludges; and the release of radium from uranium mill tailings due to the dissolution of radiobarite [(Ra,Ba)SO4] by sulfate-reducing bacteria. The results highlight the conclusion that the chemical stability of submerged tailings reflects both: the solid-phase characteristics of the tailings material; and the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the depositional environment. In particular, the data illustrate that rigorous characterisation of both the waste solids and receiving environment must be performed in order to assess their compatibility. The results have relevance to the management of tailings repositories including constructed impoundments, pit lakes and natural lakes.

A BRIEF account of the water-power potentialities of Tasmania is given, together with possible applications of the power commercially. A short history of the Waddamana development is then given, and the main works are described.WATER POWER POTENTIALITIESTasmania is an island of approximately 24,500 sq. miles area (exclusive of small islands). An area of 12,000 sq. miles is at an elevation of over 1000 ft. above sea-level, and of 2300 sq. miles at over 3000 ft. above sea-level. Average annual rainfall varies from' over 140 in. on West Coast to 20 in. on East Coast, and for the whole island averages 48.5 in. The total water-power available, based on conservative figures for run off and efficiency, is 6,000,000 b.h.p. Only a small percentage of this total will, under present conditions, and under likely conditions in the immediate future, be capable of being developed commercially.An extensive hydro-metric and water-power survey is at present being carried out in order to collect information concerning the most promising water-power schemes. Already 400,000 b.h.p. has been located in different proposals, and there is still a large area of very likely country along the West Coast which has not been investigated yet. Tasmania thus has very vast power potentialities, which, combined with good ports and communications and wonderful mineral and timber resources, should augur well for the establishment of the great key industries, particularly chemical and metallurgical.

The Rivera Crystalline Island (RCI) is an erosional window of the intracontinental Parana Basin that outcrops in the Rivera Department, north of Uruguay. RCI is made up mainly by Precambrian granites, metasediments and granite-gneisses. This island is crosscut by a dextral transcurrent shear zone system, the Rivera Shear System (RSS). The bulk strain ellipsoid was defined by previous work and has allowed the evaluation of shear dynamics. The geometry of the shear system is made up of two shear directions: E-W (P-shear), which turn right to NW-SE direction (R-shear), leading to the development of extensional bends. The shear zone system was developed in brittle-ductile to brittle regimes, under temperature conditions compatible with greenschist facies metamorphism. The shear zones are marked by an intensive fracture cleavage development. Mylonites develop only in narrow, discontinuous higher strain zones. Internally, the shear zones are dominated by intrusive rocks, mainly granites, dacites and diorites. Hydrothermal alteration has been developed in several areas.The economic significance of RCI is given by several small gold deposits, which have been exploited since 1869. One major new gold mine is under development, the San Gregorio Gold Mine. This gold deposit is locally controlled by a dilatant site where R-shear turns right to P-shear. Mine lithologies were deeply altered by hydrothermal fluids in the dilatant structure. This work presents the lineament-structural analysis carried out to identify similar structural patterns in all RCI sites favourable to host other gold deposits. The exploration program also considered remote sensing, geology, geophysical and geochemical survey.

In January 1998 Sydney Water Corporation formed an Alliance with construction contractor Transfield, and engineering consultants Connell Wagner and Montgomery Watson, to design and construct the Northside Storage Tunnel. The project is part of WaterPlan 21, Sydney WaterÆs strategy for cleaning up the harbours, bays, rivers and beaches within its business area. WaterPlan 21 is an integral part of the NSW GovernmentÆs $3.1 billion Waterways Package which establishes targets and initiatives for sustainable wastewater management within NSW. The project is being delivered under an Alliance Agreement, which has a number of non-traditional features in terms of partnering, management principles and design and construct. Construction began in mid-1998 and is on target to meet the completion deadline for the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM), in particular, has been likened in a somewhat inflammatory manner to be the ‘next asbestos’.From the business change perspective, there are three areas holding the industry back from fully engaging with the issue:There is no real feedback loop in any operational sense to assess the impact of investment or application of controls to manage diesel emissions.DPM are getting ever smaller and more numerous, but there is no practical way of measuring them to regulate them in the field. Mass, the current basis of regulation, is becoming less and less relevant.Diesel emissions management is generally wholly viewed as a cost, yet there are significant areas of benefit available from good management.This paper discusses a feedback approach to address these three areas to move the industry forward. The six main areas of benefit from providing a feedback loop by continuously monitoring diesel emissions have been identified: Condition-based maintenance. Emissions change instantaneously if engine condition changes. Operator performance. An operator can use a lot more fuel for little incremental work output through poor technique or discipline. Vehicle utilisation. Operating hours achieved and ratios of idling to under power affect the proportion of emissions produced with no economic value. Fuel efficiency. This allows visibility into other contributing configuration and environmental factors for the vehicle. Emission rates. This allows scope to directly address the required ratio of ventilation to diesel emissions. Total carbon emissions. The Olympic Dam mine utilises 1.1 m to 1.4 m diameter raise bores for generating the initial slot void for most production stopes. Slot raise bores generally span two development levels ranging from 30 m to 50 m in height. Raise bores are reamed upward and typically leave a cap of rock equivalent to two times the raise bore diameter on the drill level (minimum 3 m). This provides safe access over the cap for subsequent production activities. It is therefore critical to ensure robust falling object protection for personnel accessing underneath, and in the vicinity of the raise bore void on the lower level. Recently, a number of mesh failures have occurred at Olympic Dam as a result of falling rock from the underside of the cap and raise walls. In addition, as Olympic Dam transitions to deeper and more challenging ground conditions, rockfall-off onto the raise bore protection mesh is anticipated to increase in frequency. This paper discusses the evolution of raise bore protection mesh used at Olympic Dam and presents results from recent site-based drop testing. This impact testing was carried out using a built for purpose object to replicate point loading and shear failure of mesh wires. Testing was also carried out on an improved mesh design which utilises two layers of Geobrugg high-tensile MINAX mesh. Results from the drop testing suggest an improvement in performance of the raise bore protection mesh is realised with the updated design.

Run-out analyses of tailings storage facilities are typically undertaken using methods based on rheological theory. These are reasonable techniques to model the behaviour of tailings that, through significant run-out and possibly mixing with supernatant water, are generally acting in a fluidised manner. Such modelling often follows on from two-dimensional continuum analysis models where, if failure is predicted, grid failure often occurs when deformations begin to increase. This results in a disconnect between the prediction of failure and the modelling of the potential extent of the failure.Recently, rezoning methods have been incorporated into commercially available two-dimensional soil mechanics deformation codes. Rezoning techniques enable large deformations to be modelled within a two-dimensional continuum analysis framework; however, while promising, the use of such tools is not yet widespread, and a consensus is yet to develop on how they should be applied to tailings dam run-out modelling.This paper uses FLAC rezoning techniques to model the flow behaviour of two historic tailings dam failures. The purpose of these analyses is to critically assess the performance of rezoning against some available historic failures. The required data to undertake such an analysis is outlined, along with the inherent limitations and assumptions required. Parametric analyses are outlined to address some of these issues. In general, the analyses undertaken underestimated the flow distance observed in the historic failures by varying degrees; however, in some instances, the analysis reasonably reproduced the qualitative shape of the initial failure zone. Mine-derived solutes from Energy Resources of Australia’s (ERA’s) Ranger uranium mine have been closely monitored for decades. Ranger is surrounded by the Northern Territory’s Kakadu National Park and is upstream of Ramsar convention wetlands. Modelling of groundwater flow and solute egress from mine wastes to surface waters has helped ERA successfully assess closure options and secure intermediate regulatory approvals during the site closure process. Potential environmental impacts were assessed using groundwater modelling in support of three ERA applications involving disposal of tailings-derived mine waste. Model results were an important part of the basis for obtaining regulatory approval. Three case studies are presented describing the three applications and how the groundwater modelling supported approval of the applications. For case study #1, INTERA supported ERA in addressing stakeholder concerns in 2017 regarding two aspects of tailings deposition in Pit 3. The first was the potential for flow of tailings fluid into the surrounding formations during tailings deposition. The second was the difference in post-closure magnesium (Mg) loading to surface water for two tailings deposition scenarios. INTERA developed a two-dimensional (2D) model that showed excess tailings pore pressures would not cause outflow and solute egress from the pit during deposition. INTERA’s three-dimensional (3D) models demonstrated that post-closure Mg loading to creeks for both tailings scenarios differed marginally and would be a small fraction of natural creek Mg loads. The modelling results helped avoid delays in completing tailings deposition driven by stakeholders’ environmental concerns. Case study #2 consisted of supporting ERA’s 2019 request for approval to change the tailings deposition method and final tailings level in Pit 3. INTERA’s model results for the permitted and proposed deposition methods showed minimal differences in post-closure Mg loading to creeks. The model results helped ERA obtain the needed approval for the tailings deposition method and water and tailings levels in Pit 3. For case study #3, INTERA modelled the comparative impacts from leaving the entire contaminant plume from the temporary tailings storage facility (TSF) in situ or excavating a portion of the contaminated material from beneath the TSF floor and placing it in Pit 3. The modelling results supported an approved TSF contaminated material application important for ERA to stay on schedule and minimise both closure costs and environmental impacts.

The Vancouver Island Highway Project (VIHP) was a $CAD 1.2 billion expenditure by the Province of British Columbia to improve travel safety and relieve traffic congestion between Victoria and Campbell River on Vancouver Island. In the section of highway between the Tsolum River and Oyster River, on the Inland Island Highway portion of the VIHP, over half of the rock to be cut and filled was found to be net acid generating. The Tsolum River has been impacted by metal leaching and acid rock drainage (ML/ARD) for decades from an upstream closed minesite. Geochemical testwork indicated: over half of the rock along this section of highway was potentially net acid generating based on a site-specific SNPR (=NP/SAP) criterion of 1.5; some core samples were already acidic; pyrite occurred in disseminated framboidal and gel forms; the rate of acid generation was not high; measured neutralisation potential (NP) provided some lag time for the onset of net acidity; and non-carbonate neutralising minerals prevented low pH (These predictions led to ML/ARD controls involving: realignment of the highway; elevation control to minimise the volume of disturbed rock; encapsulation of blasted-rock fills within the highway, surrounded by low-permeability till and covered with asphalt; and diversion of water away from cut faces. Internal pipes drained any water reaching the fills into external ditches and ponds, where the water could be monitored and, if necessary, treated. Water from the cuts was also captured in ditches and carried to monitored ponds. Elevated aqueous sulfate concentrations in several ponds confirmed that sulfide minerals were oxidising, but the lack of both acidic pH and increasing trends in concentrations demonstrated that ML/ARD was controlled. Contingency plans for any pond that may become acidic include water treatment, which predictive testwork has shown would not require substantial amounts of limestone or lime.

Phyllite waste rock at the Simandou Pic de Fon and Oueleba Iron Ore deposits (Guinea, West Africa) variably weather to form clay-rich rocks. This weathering modifies the mineralogical, geochemical and mechanical properties of the phyllites. Final pit walls will largely be formed in phyllite, so it is critical that the slope design takes account of the distribution and variability of weathering within this material. Phyllite intact material strength has been correlated with geochemistry (ie mineralogy) facilitating the establishment of domains of intact rock strength (IRS). In order to calibrate this geochemically-based strength model, core from diamond drilling (DD), comprising a variety of phyllite material types (from soft clay to moderate strength rock), was geotechnically logged to assess intact strength; further validation was achieved by uniaxial compression (UCS) testing and point load tests (PLT). The correlation between geochemistry and strength offers a potentially powerful tool for differentiating basic mechanical properties of the rock mass, especially at Simandou where a significant proportion of the resource drilling is done by reverse circulation (RC). Unlike DD, reliable measurements of material strength from RC samples can prove difficult, especially in clay-rich material. Therefore, gaining information from routine geochemical assay results, independent of the sampleÆs physical integrity, is a valuable and cost-effective source of reliable empirical data. Data acquired using this approach provides an opportunity to develop strength domains, which are integrated into mine planning block models. In combination with other geotechnical characteristics, this can be a valuable input to the development of geotechnical models. A new lead refinery with a. capacity of 230,000 tons per year com-menced operation at*Port'Plsie in October, 1959. This plant' superseded the refinery which had operated from 1933 with the advent of thecontinuous lead refining process. The incorporation of new equipment following local metallurgical developments, together with the overseas demand for lead of extremely low antimony content, created difficulties in operating the original plant. The new refinery project was under-taken to cover this disability and to gain the full advantage of the new processes.Desilverising and softening are carried out in units identical in size to those used previously. Metallic'zinc is now recovered from the entire output of desilverised bullion by vacuum distillation. Final refining is then carried out by batch'treatinent with caustic soda yield-ing lead of purity previously unattainable at Port Pirie.These two processes have replaced continuous dezincing by oxidation, a high temperature process which caused large quantities of lead and antimony to be recirculated. As the final stage is a .batch process the product composition can be.checked before casting. Individual batches can be adjusted to produce special alloys to,consumer's specification.Improved casting equipment has allowed the quantity production of pigs of good physical characteristics either as 56 lb bars or 2000 lb pigs. This, together with the high purity of the lead, has assured the B.H.A.S. position in world markets.Automatic control systems have been extensively employed particularly on the vacuum dezincing unit.The anticipated financial benefits have been achieved mainly by a reduction in the tonnage of recirculated materials, a smaller labour force, and reduced maintenance requirements.

The requirement of mineral resources is increasing as the economy is continually increasing in China. The mining practices of various complex sulphide deposits and precious metal deposits, and the treatment of mine tailings and other industrial solid wastes, have greatly improved fill quality in the metal mines. From early-1980s, high density slurry fill, paste fill of total tailings, low density slurry fill with addition of silicate gelling agent, etc has been studied and applied, and some progress has been achieved. Today, mine tailings, slag and power plant ash are widely used as fill materials in mining. A number of cemented fill mines equipped with large capacity trackless mining machines are in production. Recently, The 3rd Chinese National Symposium on Mining with Backfill, 1995 has been held, the progress of fill technology in mines has been exchanged and summarised. In the paper, some aspects of fill technology used in the metal mines of China are briefly introduced and some applications of fill research work are presented.

The New Zealand rail authority, Kiwi Rail and Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA), are jointly planning a new mainline rail link between Auckland’s downtown Britomart Station and the existing Western Line at Mt Eden. In 2009, APB&B, a consortia of Aecom, Beca, Parsons Brinkerhoff and Hassell Architects where commissioned to develop the conceptual design, Assessment of Environmental Effects (AEE) and business case for the new 3 km rail line towards preparing a Notice of Requirement to protect the route through Auckland’s central business district.This paper describes the engineering challenges in the development of the conceptual design for the three proposed underground stations, the running tunnels and connections to the existing network. Feasible alignment and station location options were developed and evaluated using multi-criteria analysis based on key client functional requirements, constraint mapping and environmental impacts. The resulting preferred scheme was then developed to a conceptual design suffi cient for assessment of environmental effects, risks, and the development of a robust construction methodology to allow high level capital cost estimates.The paper describes some of the major challenges overcome to develop the concept, including steep gradients, narrow street envelopes with existing buildings and structures, the need for large platform spaces with low ECBF rock cover and complex connections at Britomart and the main line near Mt Eden.The development of the conceptual design of the underground stations in particular demonstrates the need for a holistic value engineering approach to satisfying the architectural and functional requirements, in a highly constrained dense urban environment and at lowest practical cost. The construction methodology was a key input to the conceptual design development throughout.The conceptual design will be used as the fundamental basis for the development of the AEE and business case for the project in the future.

Production mine geology must be accurate and efficient in order to reduce risk and ensure that ore value and mining operation revenue are maximised. Present grade control practices are commonly based on outmoded and inaccurate 2D geological mapping techniques where spatial relationships are estimated by eye, sketched by hand and projected to arbitrary reference planes. The 3D mapping approach outlined in this paper integrates 3D photogrammetric imagery with implicit modelling techniques to enable more accurate grade control and reconciliation in underground mines. High-resolution stereo photographs are taken of daily ore development headings. Ore contacts are traced directly on a 2D face photo using a stylus and rugged tablet. Area-weighted face grades are estimated and calculated on mapped 2D face planes. In the office, a 3D photorealistic mesh is processed and georeferenced. 2D face mapping data is transformed into its actual 3D location and true 3D mine mapping is performed by digitising oriented 3D polylines representing ore contacts and other geological features directly onto the image surface. Three-dimensional spatial relationships are fixed, eliminating the projection error of traditional 2D methods. Ore envelope and waste solids are modelled within the closed, drift-round mesh. Volume-weighted ore envelope and round grades, as well as round volume and tonnage, are calculated. Ore/waste classifications, grade, tonnage and per cent dilution are quantified per round, visually assessed in 3D and reconciled with short- and long-term models on a daily basis. Updated geological continuity models provide geological guidance in development headings under geological control and accurate 3D structural and form-line mapping improves definition drilling and stope planning. Three-dimensional imagery provides a permanent detailed survey and geological record of mine workings that can be revisited virtually to reinterpret geological ore controls in light of new observations and insights. In addition images can be used to monitor daily production performance, create training scenarios for miners, engineers and geologists and prepare management presentations. This approach adds value to underground mines by improving the accuracy and efficiency of mine geology practices. Today, it can be said that the majority of mines utilise communications equipment in one form or another. Either for communications between staff making their day-to-day operations more efficient, or for emergency communications, as well as linking computer based mine management systems, and providing remote control over complex mobile and fixed machinery. With the advances in technology now available, we are moving into the next generation of mine communications equipment, using digital communications in the underground mine environment. It is a proven fact that an efficient underground mine communications system can help maximise production, by providing major gains in areas such as equipment and manpower utilisation, staff and vehicle tracking, reaction times to break downs and emergencies. In this paper we will describe some of the facilities that are currently available, as well as what will soon be available to mining and tunnelling companies around the world.

Business intelligence (BI) and business analytics (BA) are established IT technologies that are used extensively in the business environment. This paper discusses the use of these technologies in production environments and beneficiation plants.Assmang’s Khumani mine is an iron ore operation located in the Northern Cape, South Africa. Assmang Limited is jointly owned by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited. This paper presents a case study of a BI solution applied to this plant, which is used by metallurgists, supervisors and all levels of operations and management to extract and analyse data to control and optimise the operation of the plant.The main advantage of adopting an established BI solution is the ease with which production personnel can extract and analyse data. The data is easily presented in familiar spreadsheets and no IT staff or specific training is required to achieve this.The solution adopted at Khumani mine uses a data mart with a multidimensional model (called an online analytical processing (OLAP) cube) acting as the main repository and source of data. The OLAP cube simplifies the access and analysis of plant data.The OLAP cube stores data in a specifically-designed way, which allows extraction and analysis to be performed quickly. It is designed to hold large amounts of data on a long-term basis, which could be for the life of the plant. It also performs automatic aggregations over many dimensions on a background process.A major benefit in adopting such a BI solution is that it allows common BA methods to be applied. This is due to both the efficient long-term storage of data and the availability of standard BA tools. BA tools are now able to perform data mining, predictive analytics, forecasting and other machine-learning algorithms.
