The overall systems approach to blast furnace aerodynamics is explored including the time and spatial inter-relationships that exist between the furnace lines, tuyeres, burden characteristics, distributor capabilities and furnace operating practice. Attention is called to the time dependent, three dimensional aspects of blast furnace aerodynamics and to the existence of several zones within a furnace where the flow characteristics are different. Changes in furnace operating practice to take further advantage of fully beneficiated burdens including formed coke are discussed from a practical viewpoint. Lessons learned in a variety of shaft furnaces used for other purposes are discussed insofar as they have a bearing on aerodynamics in an iron blast furnace. Questions are raised about the penetration of hot blast in large furnaces. Operating practices and.proposed solutions are evaluated where tuyeres over iron and slag notches are restricted or plugged. Opportunities are presented for using on-line hierarchical computer systems with adaptive tuning algorithms to provide non-linear control of changing process conditions in real time. This will make it possible for the blast furnace operator to optimise a variety of interrelated paramaters, each with different response times. Potential increases in productivity, fuel savings and improved quality control are believed to be within reach.

The paper describes a spectrometric method and apparatus developed for lithology logging in brown coal formations. The nuclear spectromet- ric technique developed is able to delineate coal/sand/clay seams. One requirement was to log inside drilling rods, as well as cased or open holes. The method described is based on combined natural gamma and gamma- gamma techniques using a spectrometric system for signal acquisition and subsequent computer based on-line data analysis and interpretation.

Veolia Water Technologies was contracted by a global coal mining company to design a retrofit acid mine drainage treatment facility using DenseSludge™ technology on a former coal refuse disposal site. The project constraint was to reuse current facilities in order to reduce additional capital work cost and avoid additional footprint requirements while improving treatment performance and reducing sludge production and chemical consumption. The initial installation of 454 m3/h served as a pilot plant to demonstrate the benefits of the process and ultimately provided design criteria for the new facility. The pilot demonstrated the benefit of the technology by reducing sludge volume by 90 per cent compared to conventional processes currently in use. The sludge that is reinjected into the mine contains less water, which reduces the volume of water that returns to the mine pool for treatment and mine water balance. Furthermore, the pilot plant reduced lime usage compared to conventional processes by operating at a lower pH set point, demonstrating steady pH control and stoichiometric lime utilisation.CITATION:Dube, C and Banerjee, K, 2015. Infrared spectroscopy has the ability to accurately measure mineralogy of drill cores, allowing for better spatial characterisation of iron ore deposits and potentially improving the prediction of key mining and processing parameters at the deposit scale. BHP Billiton Iron Ore is using infrared spectroscopic drill core logging to provide fast and accurate mineralogy for diamond cores and reverse circulation (RC) samples.Mineralogy can be predicted from infrared spectroscopic drill core data with errors on estimates ranging from six to 12 weight per cent. The error on the clay estimates is significantly lower than for hematite and goethite content estimates. This manuscript presents the results from a study on a bedded iron ore deposit, hosted in the Brockman iron formation, for which infrared spectroscopic data were collected on all of the diamond and RC drilling. Carbonatites - igneous carbonate-silicate rocks - host the world's major resources for niobium, phosphorous and REE (rare earth elements).Carbonatites represent the least common products of mantle and igneous processes and their emplacement is principally controlled by lithospheric domes and rift structures. Intrusive carbonatites frequently comprise carbonate-amphibole-apatite-pyrocWore assemblages, occur as plugs, cores, dykes, sills sheets, veins, pipes and irregular bodies, are gecichemically anomalous (Ba, Ca, Cl, F, Hf, Mg, Nb, P, REE, S, Sc, SO4, Sri Tb, Ti, D, V, Zr), are associated with alkaline silica-undersaturated igneous rocks forming carbonatite complexes, and display large, intensive alteration haloes. Also carbonatites are similar to limestones, prone to weathering, and may form thick laterite profiles.Magmatic ores (pyrocWore, apatite, bastnaesite, monazite, magnetite, baddeleyite, phlogopite, fluorite, calcite) and weathering related residual and supergene ores (pyrochlore, apatite, magnetite, anatase, vermiculite) are currently being mined on all continents except Australia. Australia is underexplored for carbonatite associated primary magmatic and especially residual-supergene ore deposits. Chances are very high for the finding of new carbonatite, occurrences and associated ores.

An assessment has been made of six reported methods for the determination of the swelling of iron ore pellets on reduction. The methods are discussed on the basis of apparatus requirements, reduction conditions, sample requirements, measurement of swelling and reproducibility. It is concluded that the CNRM, LKAB, and Lurgi methods are the most satisfactory which presently exist for determination of the swelling of industrially produced, iron ore pellets.

Traditionally, most Australian iron ore mining operations have been surface-based. Processing plants were designed to handle dry ores. In recent years mining operations in the Pilbara have progressively moved below the water table exposing wet, sticky ores which have caused lost efficiency in screening operations as particles tend to agglomerate and adhere, blinding screening media. Miners and vibrating screen manufacturers have experimented with a shift from linear motion to elliptical motion screens. Elliptical motion conveys and lifts particles. Effective on flat deck (horizontal and inclined) or sloping decks it can be configured to provide a controlled transport rate, applying pressure in all directions to maximise screening efficiency. In practice, elliptical motion screens have proven to be effective in dislodging sticky particles from screening media, reducing blinding rates and improving screen efficiency. Moisture and clay content change during the life of a mine. These changes are sometimes the effect of seasonal rainfall, in other cases due to increased groundwater and clay content as mining operations go deeper. To compensate for such changes and optimise screen efficiency, changing the ‘shape’ of elliptical screen motion is required. This has traditionally required shutting down processing plants and making mechanical screen adjustments. Plant downtime is costly and machine adjustment has been a ‘trial and error’ practice. This paper will explore the results of a field trial that is currently underway in Brazil of a next generation elliptical motion screen design that allows operators to make changes to exciter rotational direction, speed and screen stroke angle, through electronic drive phase control. The machine’s electronic drive system synchronisation is enhanced for stability with a unique mechanical timing system. Operating at up to 6 g, screen adjustments can be made on the fly without stopping production. Early trial results are showing up to 50 per cent improvement in screen efficiency compared with traditional elliptical motion machines under certain feed conditions.

"Sunrise Dam Gold Mine (SDGM) is located 820 km from Perth, 220 km from Kalgoorlie—Boulder and 55 km south of Laverton in Western Australia. The SDGM main pit had successfully operated since 1997 and was due to be completed during 2012. An opportunity existed to extract the high-grade crown pillar – 600 kt @ 7 g/t for 135 koz by either open pit or underground methods.The crown pillar was the 60 m (vertically) thick remaining part of the high-grade Cosmo orebody between the top of the paste filled underground mine stopes and the planned base of the final open pit shell.There were two major difficulties being considered when choosing the underground or open pit options:a major wall failure in the upper section of the main pit wall directly above the crown pillar restricting access from the base of the open pit to the top of the crown pillarimpact of a high rainfall event while the crown pillar was being mined from either surface or underground resulting in flooding of the underground mine workings.This paper will discuss the following issues:the process to identify and evaluate the risks in both options using knowledge based modelling software; this technique allowed the evaluation of a complex set of assumptions to arrive at the preferred optionremediation of the Watu failurethe selection of the preferred option and the challenges encountered before, during and after the extraction of the crown pillarthe planning and geotechnical work to ensure the safe extraction of the crown pillarsuccessful outcomes transitioning from open pit operation to a solely underground operation.Citation:Robeson, A, Cowan, M and Brockman, M, 2016. The intention of this work was to con struct a machine on a pilot scale which could hoist a mixture of ore and water through a height of 300 metres and to operate the mach- ine to determine the parameters which affect the success of upscaling the machine to a pro- duction unit size. The investigation into this form of hoist- ing was stimulated by the interest shown by Roan Selection Trust (RST) into the Mills Pulse vessel system. Agreement was reached between these two parties that RST would in- vestigate the Mills System and determine if this system, shown to be successful on a Lab- oratory scale, would be successful as a pro- duction unit. The investigation has shown, however, that for practical reasons, the Mills System is not satisfactory. As a consequence, the RST system was invented and developed which on a pilot plant scale would be capable of lifting 7,000 tonnes of ore per month. The inventions included amongst other things, a valve to control the flow of the abrasive mixture of ore and water, a new pumping system employing a filter mechanism, and a method of changing the downward direction of flow of the pipe mixture through the plant to an upward flow in the hoisting pipe. It is shown that coke has a major influence on the pattern of operation and on the aerodynamics of the blast furnace and that the physical and chemical characteristics of coke, at each stage in the furnace, determine its ability to satisfy requirements for iron production and coke economy. Analysis of coke sampled from operating furnaces is compared with furnace behaviour. The available data suggests the importance of segregation, strength, size change and chemical degradation of coke on furnace performance. Correlations are presented for coke breakdown ratio as a function of coke rate and hearth diameter which shows that breakdown increases with hearth diameter and with decreasing coke rate. It is also shown that the Micum tests do not reflect the coke strength in a predictable way and that solution reactions appear to play an important role in giving rise to a pitting effect on the cell walls of the coke with the resultant deterioration in coke properties. The catalytic effect of activating substances, such as alkalis, is noted and results are presented which show the effect of carbon solution on the coke strength. The importance of coke in the stack and in the bosh is discussed and flooding results are presented for BSC furnaces which show the probable driving limits for the furnaces considered. It is also shown that coke sampled from different tuyeres in a furnace gives quite different flooding limits. Other applications of the coke test work at BSC are also noted and the relevant objectives listed.

Reporting Codes are not prescriptive on methodologies to report or classify Mineral Resource Estimation results, but the assessment of risk and uncertainty is required, and is likely to be increasingly important in future Code updates. The 2012 JORC Code indicates that relative confidence in tonnage-grade estimations should be considered for classification, and that there should be a discussion of relative accuracy and confidence levels in the Mineral Resource Estimate. These considerations are also relevant to the drill hole spacing required for various classification categories, along with other geological and data quality criteria. This paper summarises the theory, principles and current practice of various drill hole spacing analysis techniques for both achieving a desired level of resource categorisation and for optimising grade control or resource drill-out costs. The authors provide practitioners with a guide in their use to assess uncertainty and relative accuracy, as illustrated by a number of case studies. While all drill hole spacing studies rely on the assumption of consistency of the continuity model from current to future drilling, the range of methods available provide much more objective outcomes than previously adopted ‘rules-of-thumb’.

Improper use of auxiliary ven- tilation units during heading operations may often result in the appearance of hazardous methane accumulations. This is the case especially when roadways are ventilated by a combined system with a short sucking pipe at face end performing as the dedusting installation. Uniform air inflow to the face end facilitates sucking off the dust clouds and creates conditions favourable for formation of local methane accumulations. The highest methane concentration occurs in the cutting zone between the rock cut and the pipe inlet, under the roof and by, the sidewalls. Permanent monitoring of methane concentration at face end employs methane sensors. The most important are: one on the road- header's boom behind the cutting head, and one at the air outlet from the dedusting installation.

The Per Geijer iron oxide apatite deposits (IOA) display significant potential mineral resources for Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (publ), known as LKAB. LKAB continuously mines magnetite/hematite ores in northern Sweden for almost 130 years. The Per Geijer deposits reveal a high phosphorus content and vary from magnetite-dominated to hematite-dominated ores, respectively. Furthermore, they show a large variation in texture, mineral composition, and relation to wall rocks. The high phosphorus concentration of these ores results from highly elevated content of apatite as gangue mineral. Reliable, robust, and qualitative characterisation of the mineralisation is required as these ores inherit complex mineralogical and textural features. For this purpose, comminution tests at laboratory scale in combination with scanning electron microscopy-mineral liberation analysis (SEMMLA) were carried out. Based on this work, significant information on the modal mineralogy and degree of liberation of minerals of economic interest (eg magnetite, hematite, and apatite) were obtained. Results show that there is a difference in the degree of liberation of magnetite and hematite between ore types. This seems to be dependent both on the size fractions and the dominance of each iron oxide in the individual ore type. The amount of gangue minerals seems to have no significant impact on the degree of liberation after comminution. Apatite is generally best liberated in ore types associated with silicates, regardless of magnetite or hematite dominance. Based on the results of this study it can be inferred that a high degree of liberation of the minerals of economic interest can be achieved. However, results need to be verified with further beneficiation steps such magnetic separation, apatite flotation and possibly reverse silicate flotation.

"For moisture samples, the International Standard for iron ore sampling states the following: Moisture samples shall be processed as soon as possible and test portions weighed immediately. If this is not possible, samples shall be stored in non-absorbent airtight containers with a minimum of free air space to minimise any change in moisture content, but should be prepared without delay. ISO 3082 (2009)Prescribing what to do is of course easy. Putting it in practice is, however, a little more problematic.The iron ore industry has seen quite some changes in the last ten to 15 years, such as: a large increase in the volume of seaborne trade new ore types and blends coming onto the market new mines, processing plants and port facilities producing more and loading faster an increase in wet processed ore products a dramatic rise and then equally dramatic fall in the iron ore price followed by a recent recovery.All of the above have had an effect on sampling facilities. The large increase in volume coupled with ambitions such as labour efficiency, safer operations and higher precision has driven the installation and retrofitting of automated sampling and robotic sampling preparation plants in order to keep up with increased quality control.Designers of sampling facilities are invariably instructed to build plants that comply with ISO 3082. In general this means that the plants are compliant in respect of the number of primary increments, gross sample masses and sample division rules. The clause at the beginning of this abstract is mostly overlooked as it only appears in a section (4.1) describing the basic requirements of a sampling system.An error of 0.1 per cent in moisture changes the value of 1 Mt of iron ore at US$50/t by US$50 000. At 700 Mt/a of Australian iron ore exports, this is US$35 M. Frequently, errors from 0.5 to 1 per cent in moisture measurements are encountered.In comparison an error of 0.1 per cent Fe is US$0.081 (US$50/t and 62 per cent Fe base) per tonne, that is US$81 000 per Mt or about US$51 M for the same Australian annual iron ore exports.It is somewhat mystifying that we in the ISO Technical committees spend extraordinary energy (= money and time) on improving measurement techniques, whilst the big costs are in sampling errors. The exploration of Mount Isa Mines' new copper source will require the development of a five kilometre 4.7 x 5.5 metre blind decline commencing 1000m below the surface and extending to 1600m below the surface. With virgin rock temperatures approaching 60¦C, the ventilation strategy represents a complete departure from any previously used at this mine, in that refrigeration becomes essential. The use of direct water to air cooling techniques has become commonplace in mines throughout the world and their application is being adopted at Mount Isa Mines. A heat load simulation routine has been implemented to allow for the design of refrigeration requirements, as well as to aid in the selection of diesel or electric equipment. This enabled planners to determine the size of a surface based refrigeration plant. Future refrigeration demand for expansion into the ore production stage has also been investigated.

Managing blasting operations in four mines surrounded by villages is a challenging task. This study aims to compare the blast-induced flyrock as observed in opencast mines by predicting flyrock distance using a soft computing approach known as an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and Flyrock Predictor software based on empirical studies. Blast design and geotechnical variables such as linear charge concentration, burden, stemming length, specific charge, unconfined compressive strength and rock quality designation were selected as independent variables, while flyrock distance was used as a dependent variable. Out of 120 blasts, data from 100 blasts was used to train and test the ANFIS model. Flyrock distance for the remaining 20 blasts was used to evaluate the model. Flyrock distance has also been predicted using Flyrock Predictor software based on an empirical approach using the same data sets as those used for ANFIS. Performance indices like root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error and coefficient of determination (R2) were evaluated to compare the reliability of ANFIS and Flyrock Predictor quantitatively. ANFIS was found to be a better predictive tool, with 1.75 m RMSE and 0.966 R2 compared to Flyrock Predictor, which returned RMSE and R2 values of 2.48 m and 0.932 respectively.CITATION:Trivedi, R, Singh, T N, Gupta, N and Bhandari, S, 2015. On the southern flank of Lihir Island, a group of three volcanic cones were discovered at water depths from 1000-1500 m. The volcanoes are located in a narrow zone of recent seismic activity and elevated heat flow (up to 100 mW/m2). The recovered rocks consist of fresh alkali-olivine basalts, clinopyroxene-rich basalts, and porphyritic phlogopite basalts. One of the volcanoes has a recently erupted ejecta blanket (recovery of warm ash!), containing a suite of abundant mafic to ultramafic xenoliths. These xenoliths appear to represent a unique cross-section of subduction- modified mantle material sampled by volatile-rich primary fore-arc magma during its ascent to the seafloor. The most spectacular finding was the discovery of an active hydrothermal system with associated vent fauna and mineralization at Edison Seamount, and the recovery of unusually gold-rich (up to 43 ppm Au) hydrothermal precipitates in 1050 m water depth at the top of Conical Seamount, only 25 km south of the world-class epithermal Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir. The discovery of submarine hydrothermal vents associated with highly alkaline, quartz-undersaturated fore-arc volcanics represents a significant departure from similar hydrothermal systems on the mid-ocean ridges and in back-arc basins. The high gold grades in hydrothermal precipitates at Conical Seamount may indicate the first documented example of a shallow-marine epithermal system analogous to those known on land, and has important implications for the gold potential of submarine arc environments.

Time-dependent deformation occurs when geo-materials are under an applied load; this may lead to additional deflection of a tunnel structure and the stress redistribution in the surrounding rock, shotcrete lining and rock bolt support system over time. A better understanding of this creep behaviour can improve the reliability of design, construction and maintenance of tunnels. Hence, the present investigation was carried out on the time-dependent properties of rock, shotcrete and the combined tunnel support system. Tunnels constructed in different ground conditions were modelled. The closure changes of the tunnel with time and the redistribution of stress in the surrounding rock, shotcrete lining and rock bolts due to the creep deformation were analysed. Results of the present analysis were compared with the results from the commercial program ABAQUS.

The estimate of an ore reserve is a vital statement made about a mineral occurrence by an evaluator. It is important that such a statement communicate reality to all groups involved in a mining project, be they technical, financial, company directors, Stock Exchanges or the public. Ore reserve statements should state both resources and recoverable ore reserves. Resources may be important in very long term considerations, (because mining, metallurgical technology and economics change with time) but recoverable reserves are todays reality. The important factors contributing to recoverable reserves (in a general sense) are geology, mining method (and its impact on dilution and ore loss), metallurgical recovery, costs and commodity prices. These all need to be reflected in the ore reserve statement. In this paper recoverable ore reserve concepts across a wide range of orebodies are considered and discussed with respect to geology, mining method and ore reserve calculation procedures.
