Concentration ranges are presented for 15 trace elements not previously reported in Australian bituminous coals. The results were obtained by instrumental neutron activation analysis, which has sufficiently high sensitivity to enable determination of many elements directly in coal at concentrations less than a few µg/g. The ranges found in Australian coal are similar to the ranges reported in North American bituminous coals.

The diverse nature of inadvertent mine fires does not lend them to general treatment. But evolving from the unfortunate fires over past years is a simple principle in dealing with all fires to bring combustion under control. Control, in brief, means that the products of combustion, themselves possibly still with fuel values, are not revitalised by addition of fresh air. There are problems with fire- fighting, especially with water, as this may lead to production of CO and H2. Panel ventilation upstream of the fire must be controlled to direct all air over the fire. Some advantages in fire fighting are found by the use of "sails". Early diagnosis of fires and early treatment are essential for safety of personnel and safeguarding and recovery of property. Preparedness extends to up to date documentation, but first hand knowledge also is invaluable to the diverse personnel gathered to fight a fire, and in the decision making Involved.

Squeezing extra performance from existing equipment (‘sweating the assets’) is key to continuous improvement initiatives, particularly during times of cost cutting where the option of spending additional capital to facilitate circuit upgrades can be severely constrained. A common challenge, however, is identifying the best combination of settings for different process variables, as their effects can be camouflaged by interactions with other process variables and, of course, noise in historical data.This paper describes a recent investigation at Boyne Smelters Limited to identify strategies to coarsen the product of its dry, fixed-speed, open-circuit AG mill, without the need for installing pre-screens prior to the mill. The product is used as insulation material for the reduction of alumina to aluminium, and an excessively fine product was inhibiting the ability of the cover material to dissipate heat from the underlying anodes. The approach was to undertake a series of experiments, designed according to statistical criteria, to elucidate the effect of key process variables (feed blend and power draw) upon the product sizing. The results provided clarity about what strategies would encourage the production of a more desirable mill product (with some surprises). Construction and commissioning of the Nova Copper-Nickel project of Independence Group was completed in late 2016. The plant is in the Fraser Range of Western Australia, about 120km east of Norseman and produces separate Copper and Nickel concentrates. Since the early feasibility phases of the project, the importance of automation and control was recognised and planned for to ensure the plant performance meets the design expectations. The site is well equipped with common as well as advanced instrumentation. It currently boasts the largest number of Blue Cube MQi (mineral quantifier inline) slurry grade analysers on a single plant worldwide. It was also decided that 25 Blue Cube TempoTracks would be installed on the flotation cells. The TempoTracks provide information on froth height and velocity, hence giving continuous, quantitative measurements of the froth that is pulled off each cell, rather than relying on infrequent, subjective visual inspections.The Nova concentrator consists of a differential flotation circuit whereby copper bearing mineral are selectively floated prior to nickel flotation. It is imperative that losses of copper to the nickel circuit, and vice versa, are minimised. The plant metallurgical team and Process IQ collaborated to develop and implement the advanced control strategy for the plant. This paper focusses on the optimisation of the copper concentrate that is pulled off the copper rougher and scavengers. This strategy was made possible by the additional measurements listed above. The control optimisation of the copper rougher and copper rougher scavenger circuit was implemented during August 2017 on the StarCSTM advanced control platform. It continuously optimises the level and air setpoints. The control philosophy incorporates several notable techniques which include: a variable mass pull target that is a function of the quantity and grade of material entering the circuit, integrated compensation to prevent inventory build-up in cells, balancing of the froth velocity over the lip of each cell to adaptive, modular system usage and advanced error handling. In the iron and steelmaking processes, dusts are generated and treated by wet dedust- ing methods to form slurries which are high in iron content, but also contain certain impuri- ties. For many years these slurries have been processed and the wet cake, which is produced, has been dumped because of the high zinc and alkali chloride contents. Sintering is an appropriate process for recycling of these materials, provided the deleterious impurities can be kept under control. Zinc is a deleterious element in blast furnaces because it promotes the formation of accretions on the upper walls of the furnace. This results in irregular furnace performance. Alkali chlorides effect the emissions from the sinter plant waste gas due to the high resis- tivity of these components, resulting in decreased efficiency of the electrostatic precipitator. Experimental work indicated a concentra- tion of zinc in the -11 pmt particle size frac- tion. A cyclone plant was installed producing a "coarse" usable product and a "fine" waste Product.

Uranium solvent extraction, USX has been applied commercially for recovery and concentration for over 50 years. Uranium in acidic liquor, which is prepared following ore leaching, solid/liquid separation and clarification, can be treated through a sequence of operations; extraction-scrubbing-stripping, to obtain purified liquor. USX has dominated the primary uranium industry as the preferred technological route to converter grade yellowcake. The practices of design and operation of USX facilities has found renewed interest as new mines are developed following decades of industry dormancy. This article seeks to outline principles of design and operation from the practitioner’s perspective. The discussion also reviews historical developments of USX applications and highlights recent innovations. This review is hoped to provide guidance for technical personnel who wish to learn more about good practices that leads to reliable USX performance.

Rockfalls or significant deterioration of mine openings can have significant safety and financial impacts for mining operations. The failure of drives in underground mines sometimes highlight deficiencies in the mine risk management systems in detecting geotechnical hazards and to prevent events that can have significant impact. Consequences from these failures includes fatalities, injuries, loss of revenue, additional cost, and potentially a loss in Ore Reserves. Where the impacts are severe, it also affects families and communities linked to the operation. The assessment of underground excavations requires consideration of the full range and spectrum of geotechnical hazards, design aspects, ground support, layouts and sequences. Where the assessment of these are insufficient or incorrect, it can result in drive failures. Care must be taken that meeting production targets and personnel pressures do not result in a situation where production take preference over a proper risk-based assessment of the drives to be mined. The risk management approach is now widely accepted in the mining industry for the control and management of risks in underground mines. Codes of Practices (COP’s), Ground Control Management Plans (GCMP), Principal Hazard Management Plans (PHMP’s) and technical guidance documents has become the norm for describing the mines main hazards, risk levels and intimating controls for safe passage of vehicles and mine personnel. However, where there is a disconnect between these documents and what is actually being done at the mine site, the COP’s and/or Management Plans become ineffective (or vice versa). This disconnect may occur due to the actual content of these documents, a lack of resources, or a lack of understanding about the implementation. There is therefore a need for sites to have a documented and implemented risk-based approach for assessing underground mine development. This approach or system needs to identify all hazards and other factors affecting mine development stability early on in the design process, and outline the risk classification and controls required. Bulk cargoes, including iron ore fines, must be shipped according to the rules agreed by the member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). One critical safety measure is the transportable moisture limit (T?ML) required for Group A cargoes (cargoes that may liquefy). A number of shipping incidents involving iron ore fines from India, where liquefaction of the cargo was suspected to be the cause, have brought the issue of iron ore fines T?ML into the spotlight. Extensive research has been undertaken by the major iron ore producers from Australia and Brazil to support the IMO in developing regulations for the shipment of iron ore fines. To this end, iron ore companies sponsored the AMIRA P1097 project to establish a modified T?ML test approach specific to iron ore fines. The project was undertaken by TUNRA Bulk Solids, CSIRO’s Centre for Bulk Solids and Particulate Technology and the University of Auckland, with project leadership provided by Creative Process Innovation. The oxidation of sphalerite particles of 60 to 100 mesh size was studied in a fluidized bed of low 02 concentration at 900¦C. Par- tial pressure of 02 in the fluidizing 02-N2 gas mixture was chosen between 0.0009 and 0.02 atm. In the region of p02 between 0.008 and 0.02 atm, the oxidation rate was lowered with the decrease of p02, and the unreacted-core model was applied. At lower pbelow 0.008 atm, the reaction rate was enhanced as compared with the calcu- lated values from the unreacted-core model. From microscopic examination, it was found that ZnS was evaporated at the particle surface and the dissociated Zn vapor was oxidized in the gas phase. Initial reaction rate and the distance between the surface of inner sphaler- ite core and the oxide shell were studied based on the model of enhanced oxidation.

Flat jack stress determinations in selected colliery roadways have revealed a range of measured stress from 330-p.s.i. tension to 3,750 p.s.i. compression. Photoelastic examination of loaded plastic and actual rock mo.odel mine openings has shown that the primary horizontal stress required to attain these measured stresses would be from one to three times the superincumbent vertical load.Examination of roof movement with a. borehole oxtensumeter and a series of anchors at various horizons to 30 feet in a. vertical roof borehole showed that when a standing face waa.s advanced the roofmovement was practically confined to the lower two feet. The ma.j ority of this movement occurred during the 36 hours after mining at this face commenced.The use of a. radioactive isotope and a. scintillation counter in a. pair of parallel bcreholes promises to be sensitive and accurate method of roof bedding plane crack detection.

Modelling of Synergistic Effect of Cyanex 302 and D2EHPA in Zinc Solvent Extraction A comprehensive model is presented to predict the synergistic effect of D2EHPA and Cyanex 302 on co-extraction of zinc and manganese. The experimental results indicated that pH, temperature and the extractants ratio have strong effects on the extraction process. Correlations were proposed to predict the distribution coefficient of zinc and manganese between two phases at different conditions by multiple linear regression. The correlations were simplified by eliminating less important terms by analysis of variance. Optimum conditions (ie pH, temperature, extractants ratio and aqueous to oil phase volumetric ratio) for obtaining maximum separation of zinc from manganese at different zinc concentrations and number of extraction stages were determined. For finding the optimum condition genetic algorithm was used. Comparison the model estimations and the experimental data show that the presented model has good ability to predict the behaviours of zinc extraction system over Cyanex 302 and D2EHPA.

In 1975, following a programme of solution characterization and small scale laboratory test work, a pilot plant was constructed to treat waste liquors from the Risdon works. The plant was designed basically to neutralize liquor to a desired pH, and to flocculate, thicken and then filter the resultant pulps. The primary objective was to purify waste liquors to stand- ards set by Tasmanian environmental regulations and at the same time to provide design data for construction of a full scale treatment facility. Waste liquors were divided into two groups, those from the Zinc Plant, and those from the Acid and Superphosphate Plants, and were treated independently. To satisfactorily purify Zinc Plant waste liquors the following reaction sequence was required: 1. Neutralization to pH 10.5 (with aeration for Mn removal). 2. Further reaction of neutralized pulp with Na2S at an addition rate of typically 5 mg of S2-/litre of liquor treated to remove Cd.

A study of the bacterial oxidation of naturally occurring high-purity sulphide minerals (FeS2, Fel_xS, CuFeS2, Cu2S) has been conducted using a mesophilic strain of T. 6ejtAooLcdcth4. As well as metal analyses and solution pH, partitioning of sulphide sulphur into elemental sulphur and sulphate ion has been monitored. Partially oxidised sulphide substrates have been characterised at regular time intervals by X-ray diffraction methods and extra-cellular organic compounds reporting into leach solution have been identified by'thin layer chromatography. The results indicate that the S¦/SO4 2 partitioning of the sulphide substrates is independent of cell inoculum size and initial pulp density and varies with solution pH, Eh, leaching time and mineralogical properties of the individual sulphide minerals. The signifi- cance of results for applications in selective flotation, coal desulphurisation and agglomera- tion has been outlined.

A model of dense medium cyclones is developed based on balancing the terminal velocities of the discrete particles due to the centrifugal force against a random turbulent eddy velocity. An expression of the form P - or Q _ 1 100 e."A where P is the partition number., is a function of cyclone efficiency, particle size and density differential between the particle and medium, and is the slurry spilt, is developed and may be used for regressing plant partition data. The above model provides an understanding of peculiarities of the partition curve such as asymmetrical tails, elevation of the cutpoint and elevation of the d50 with increasingly fine feed. The effect of feed variables such as particle size, medium viscosity and changes in spigot or vortex finder diameter is shown. A means of convoluting the partition curve with various feed washabilities is discussed together with how the above may be used to evaluate plant performance for a variety of feeds.

This paper describes some experiences in the design of flotation reagent schemes for the efficient flotation of complex gold ores containing free gold and/or gold associated with easily flotable sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite and bornite. Historically, the design of gold flotation reagent schemes has been based primarily on experiences using high dosage levels of water soluble charged collectors such as xanthates and dithiophosphates and carefully controlled regions of pH. This approach has been effective with gold associated with complex sulphide minerals, in particular gold associated with iron sulphides such as pyrite. An alternative two-stage reagent approach is presented that is applicable to certain types of gold ores. This approach involves using very small dosages of uncharged water insoluble collectors at natural ore pH followed by a modified bulk flotation reagent approach for the second stage. The reasons for utilising this approach, when applicable, are discussed and illustrated with examples.

Energetics has been in the business of climate change for more than twenty years. This experience has only served to cement the understanding that decisions taken during design define the environmental and economic performance of any project. The 80-20 rule definitely applies, with 80% of a project’s performance being set through the first 20% of design decisions. This in depth knowledge is used for determining energy price forecasts, future carbon markets and carbon costs, current and future energy technologies, as well as giving a thorough understanding of the processes and technologies in place in the mining industry to work out what the most carbon and energy sensitive decisions during design are. Project selection and design is a gated process where decisions are taken in line with the information available at that point in the evolution of the project. Design decisions are, by their nature, dominated by uncertainty. In order to ensure that robust decisions are taken, it is necessary to ensure that the correct information is brought to bear at the correct decision point. This then defines and supplies the necessary carbon and energy information for design decisions to be correctly made. One of the most significant risks facing design engineers and decision makers in the mining industry is the future cost of energy. Part of this risk is associated with a future cost of carbon, however, a significant part of this risk is the cost, and variability in this cost, of the energy itself. This paper investigates the information required to support good decision taking during the design process.Project Managers and MetPlant Operators accept poor quality evaluations because they are generally unaware of what they should expect.The 2010 draft AusIMM ‘Guidelines for Techno-Economic Evaluations’ were collated by a subcommittee of practitioners and are regarded as best practice.They apply directly to projects and metallurgical plant evaluations, including those with a heavy technical basis. They can be applied to technical problem solving where there are no monetary computations.Project Managers and MetPlant Operators should demand that economic models and evaluations follow the six principles. They should become working tools which are easy to understand, fit for purpose, consistent, rigorous, record sources of input data, have key graphs and are rapid to audit.

This study examines the application of Landsat TM data to the identification of hydro- thermal alteration in the arid terrain of the El Salvador region of north Chile. Numerical reflectance values were extracted from the digital Landsat TM data for a variety of rock surfaces, including four parts of the El Salvador gossan, for each of six spectral bands. These reflectance values were analysed statistically in order to select the three spectral bands, combined as a colour composite image, that are most efficient in discriminating different varieties of alteration and for general geolog- ical interpretation. The most cost effective com- posite image for this area is a combination of bands 1,4 and 7 as the blue, green and red components respectively, with simple contrast enhancement. This image is superior to some much more expensive enhancement techniques and allows unambiguous identification of areas of hydrothermal alteration larger than about 50m. Gas and coal dust, as potential harmful elements (PHEs) produced during mining, are considered two serious threats to the safe mining and the health of miners because of its explosive and pathogenic properties. To solve this problem, compound reagents enhanced water spraying technology was used to control the gas and coal dust in excavation working face in this study, and spray testing platform and wind tunnel were used to investigated the suppression effect for gas and coal dust. In addition, sink test, and agglomeration experiments were also used to analyse its suppression mechanism. Testing results show that the dust reduction efficiencies of compound reagents enhanced water spraying technology for four different particle sizes were 80 per cent, 91.43 per cent, 94.74 per cent and 94.46 per cent, and improved by 14 per cent, 10.86 per cent, 8.42 per cent and 4.25 per cent compared to water spraying. Moreover, the gas suppression efficiency also can be increased more than 20 per cent. Sink test, and agglomeration experiments results show that compound reagent improves the spreading efficiency of the liquid on the surface of the coal by changing its wettability, and this process can not only slow down the desorption rate of gas by forming a water-sealing effect in the coal surface indicated, but also promote the agglomeration of fine-grained coal dust.

The efficient operation of large haul trucks in large open pit mines requires an economic trade off between the haul route quality, the haul truck payloads and the level of haul truck reliability. This paper describes an investigation into the relation- ship between haul route surface quality and the level of structural reliability of a haul truck main frame. An instrumentation system for unattended recording of data on a haul truck operating normally in a mine and com- puter based analytical procedures were developed and used to identify which road segments contribute significantly to fatigue cracking at various sections of a haul truck main frame. INTRODUCTION In many open pit mines there is exten- sive use of large haul trucks to move over- burden and minerals. In most open pit hard rock mines, both the overburden and mineral ore are moved by large rear dump type haul trucks. Trial ore production began at the Hilton Mine in 1987 with ore being trucked into Mount Isa for treatment at the Lead/zinc Concentrator. The expansion of output from the Hilton mine required additional concentrator capacity which led to the design and construction of the Hilton Concentrator. Systematic laboratory and Pilot Plant testwork dating back to 1968 to develop a flowsheet and reagent regime suited to the varied and generally complex mineralogy of the Hilton ore was successfully concluded with a Pilot Plant trial using a sulphoxy based sphalerite depression system in early 1988.In May 1988, a decision was made to build a 750 000 t/y concentrator with some novel technological and capital-efficient features. The Hilton Concentrator commenced operations in December 1989 reaching target grinding rates and metallurgical performance by mid-1990. Current ore treatment rate is 800 000 t/y.Lead concentrates assaying 43 - 48 per cent Pb are combined with the Lead/Zinc Concentrator lead concentrates and smelted at Mount Isa. Zinc and Low Grade Middlings (LGM) concentrates are filtered in the zinc filter plant at Isa with those from the Lead/Zinc Concentrator and then railed to Townsville for export or treatment in Australia.
