The Taupo Volcanic Zone in New Zealand and the Philippine Mobile Belt in the Philippines are characterized by active subduction, active volcanism and high seismicity. The main factors affecting characteristics of geothermal systems in both countries are: tectonic setting, source magmas, maturity of the systems, and depth to the degassing magma body. Within New Zealand, geothermal systems are grouped into arc- and rift-type. Fluids in arc-type systems contain high amounts of volatiles (40%) and higher Cl contents (3,000-10,000 mg/kg). Maximum temperatures are also higher, reaching up to >400¦C. Arc-type alteration assemblages in New Zealand and the Philippines are similar. Because Philippine geothermal systems are less mature, have higher temperatures and steeper geochemical gradients than New Zealand ones, advanced argillization is more widespread occurring down to depths of 2000 m. Mineral phases are more varied due to the active input of magmatic waters and the formation of vapor conditions at depth, forming P04-, B-, Li-, Ce-, F-, and Cl-bearing minerals at high temperatures. In the Philippines, high temperature magmatic-hydrothermal to contact metamorphic assemblages containing biotite, amphiboles and pyroxenes are relatively common, but rare in New Zealand.

Over the past decade, the mining industry has come to recognise the importance of water both to itself and to others. Water accounting is a formalisation of this importance that quantifies and communicates how water is used by individual sites and the industry as a whole. While there are a number of different accounting frameworks that could be used within the industry, the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs (MCA) water accounting framework (WAF) is an industry-led approach that provides a consistent representation of mine site water interactions regardless of their operational, social or environmental context that allows for valid comparisons between sites and companies.The WAF contains definitions of off-site water sources and destinations and on-site water use, a methodology for applying the definitions, and a set of metrics to measure site performance. The WAF is comprised of two models: the input-output model, which represents the interactions between sites and their surrounding community, and the operational model, which represents on-site water interactions.Members of the MCA have recently adopted the WAFÆs input-output model to report on their external water interactions in their Australian operations, with some adopting it on a global basis. To support this adoption, there is a need for companies to better understand how to implement the WAF in their own operations. Developing a water account is non-trivial, particularly for sites unfamiliar with the WAF or for sites with the need to represent unusual features. In this paper, a comparative performance evaluation of geostatistical, spectral, and fractal methods is made for short-scale variability prediction. The algorithms compared are: sequential Gaussian simulation method; a random fractal algorithm based on the generalised stochastic subdivision method; and a spectral simulation approach adopted for direct multi-dimensional simulation. The data for this study have been obtained from a mined out coal property. As this property was being mined, a 7315 m by 7315 m (24000 ft by 24000 ft) coal block was extensively sampled at an approximate spacing of 107 m (350 ft) and the 60-ton samples were analysed for sulphur in the 1.50 float gravity fraction. This data set is used here with the three methods to generate the simulated realisations, which are analysed for semivariogram reproduction and for simulation errors. Although all three methods converge to the true semivariogram in an average sense, the coefficient of variation of the average semivariogram for the Fourier integral method is minimum. The realisations generated by the sequential Gaussian method have minimum mean simulation error. The choice of a simulation method based on variability reproduction and simulation errors remains difficult.

Asian steel mills are demanding iron ore with specific chemical, mineralogical, metallurgical and environmental properties to warrant that the ore is of the greatest quality. As a result, a toolkit of analytical techniques becomes important. Hyperspectral analyses of iron ore cores and chips using a HyLogging™ system are now routinely undertaken by BHP Billiton Iron Ore in Western Australia for banded iron formation-hosted iron ores and channel iron deposits to better characterise their iron ores. Objective information can now be expanded by adding new sensors. The current HyLogging™ system provides point analysis reflectance spectra and a red–green–blue high-resolution image, while recent developments, such as hyperspectral imaging using the Corescan system, now provide full spectral image and surface topography. The addition of Raman spectroscopy provides the ability to detect and quantify quartz and magnetite (or maghemite) and cross validate hyperspectral information on hematite and goethite and aluminium substitution in the iron oxides. Micro-X-ray fluorescence mapping also adds chemical information appropriate for cross validation with the aforementioned methods. In almost all copper mining companies, mine planning is done considering different time frames, leading to long-term (life-of-mine) (LOM), medium-term (first three years) and short-term (first year, monthly, weekly, and up to daily plans). Shorter term plans are usually associated with more abundant information, hence models with lower uncertainty. However, they capture more of the variability found on the geological attributes. In long-term models, usually estimation methods tend to hide this variability, providing smoothed interpretations.Medium and long-term plans consider average values for the parameters and optimisation techniques are applied aimed at maximising the economic profit. Short-term plans, on the other hand, are made to comply with the medium-term promises, maximising the use of the available resources (equipment and processing capacities) and dealing with the variability not characterised in the previous planning stages. This generates an important gap between the short-term and the medium and long-term plans. A case study was made using an important oxide copper mine, where the variability found in the short-term plan has a large impact in the productive process, thus reducing the daily ore grade variability is an important goal. In this paper, this planning issue is addressed by creating medium-term mine plans using mixed integer programming which are compared using the output of a simulation of the daily extraction that is aimed at satisfying the daily constraints of the processing plant, the availability of mining equipment and the variability of ore grade. The result shows the expected gap between these mine planning processes, which suggests correcting some of the parameters used in future medium and long-term plans.

Several mineral resources have been recognised to alkaline igneous rocks. In general, these mineralisations present low P grades, so a complex concentration process is required to achieve commercial grade concentrates. This process is guided not only by the ore characteristics, such as apatite grain size and liberation degree, gangue minerals and slimes content, but also by different apatite varieties, iron oxi-hydroxide surface coating and roughness. The main techniques applied to apatite and phosphate ore characterisation, such as optical microscopy, cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), surface techniques and magnetic separation are discussed, aiming to evaluate distinct apatite varieties and their technological behaviour.

Maximising ore tonnage at a selected target grade requires that appropriate ore identification criteria be established. Iron ore mining block models may consist of many millions of estimated blocks, each block corresponding to the selective mining unit (SMU), with grade interpolated from drill hole data. Each block can be considered as a potential ore candidate. Analysis of such a huge database can require large computational resources, especially for sensitivity analysis requiring multiple computations. However, an alternative streamlined approach is possible, where the data are compressed to an appropriately smaller and representative subset. The consequent data reduction not only makes it feasible to consider the simultaneous analysis of multiple pits but also considerably speeds up computation, enabling sensitivity analysis of the potential ore tonnage as a function of the required grade. Ore identification criteria can be successfully established using appropriately chosen reduced data comprising less than one per cent of the blocks. The ore identified is virtually indistinguishable in tonnage and grade from the ore that would be selected using the entire block model.Two methods of data reduction are tested: sampling (using a proportion of unaltered blocks) and binning (consolidating groups of blocks to a single average grade). The source blocks are first sorted (such as by location, analyte grade, principal component score, random order or value) before sampling or binning. In this study, the sorting options considered were by location and Fe grade. The effectiveness of each method was evaluated using the block model subsets to select the maximum tonnage of ore at a specified target grade. Block model data from an anonymous Pilbara iron ore project with about one million blocks averaging 1.132 kt were used. The blocks are from multiple resource models, to be blended to a single product. Sampling is shown to be superior to binning because sampling preserves the full variability while binning, although matching the mean block grades reduces their variability.It was found that the appropriately sampled data sets (sorted by location) gave results virtually identical to the results for the full data set, even when the samples comprised less than one per cent of the original blocks. The reduction in computer time to identify maximum tonnage at a specified grade was approximately proportional to the sample percentage. The increase in computation speed greatly facilitated sensitivity analysis. A sampled data set of one-eighth the total block model was used to investigate the effects of changing each of the component grades around the original grade specification. The results of this sensitivity analysis are discussed, and illustrate the potential benefit of carrying out sensitivity analysis in determining feasible and marketable product grades.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2015. For the development of BHP's Gregory open cut coal mine in Central Queensland a mini computer was successfully used to assist staff in the evaluation of the deposit and the planning of the mine. The Gregory deposit is essentially a single mineable seam deposit, however the systems developed may be applied to other coal deposits including multi seam occurences. The first phase of the Gregory computer evaluation and planning project involved the establishment of a borehole data base for the storage, retrieval and analysis of both strata and quality data. During the second phase a numeric block model of the coal deposit was created. Using this model reserve calculations were carried out by specifying the area with the aid of a digitizing tablet. The third phase involved the develop- ment of systems to simulate the dragline stripping operations including the rehandle percentage calculation, a dragline production schedule showing coal quantity and quality exposed, and a combined multi dragline operation schedule that can produce figures and graphs for up to 20 variables. In the processing of refractory gold-bearing sulfides, pressure oxidation (POX) is commonly known for its role in liberating the gold in solid-solution via oxidation of the sulfide occlusions. For deposits that contain arsenic-bearing species including arsenian pyrite and arsenopyrite, POX serves an important secondary function in the fixation of arsenic, via the hydrothermal precipitation of stable arsenates such as scorodite and basic ferric arsenate sulfate (BFAS). There have been various investigations on the impact of different POX conditions on arsenic precipitation and the stability of the formed phases, but less is known about the changes to the arsenic carrier that occur in the curing stage, which follows directly from POX. The primary function of curing is to coax the dissolution of sulfates to reduce lime consumptions during cyanide leaching, and the slurry is kept at elevated temperatures near 100°C to achieve this. While the arsenic-bearing phases are expected to undergo transformation during this stage, there has thus far been limited experimental evidence. In this study, the effect of curing time and curing temperature on the arsenic-bearing species and arsenic deportment in the POX product has been investigated. Leaching of the curing products was also conducted to examine the stability of the arsenic species in the solid precipitates.

The words ""Uncertainty"" and ""Risk"" pervade every discussion about mining exploration and investment. Perhaps these terms are subjectively understood by industry professionals, but objective portrayal of these concepts outside the industry is a woefully undeveloped science. This paper addresses current industry understanding and practice regarding quantitative risk assessment techniques, and provides examples of the application of three of these techniques. Probabilistic techniques for financial risk assessment are valuable adjuncts to conventional financial analysis, and address a range of issues not assessable by any other means. The value of whole-of-project probabilistic risk assessment is currently debatable for decision-making purposes, but is seen as important as a mechanism to focus attention to the critical issues that ultimately impact on project success. The dissection of project capital into risk and non-risk components provides valuable insights into risk characteristics not readily quantifiable in any other way. This technique also provides a framework for more objective ""what if?"" scenario evaluation and for the capital structure of resource projects. Finally, mechanisms for the valuation of undeveloped reserves are examined, and guidelines suggested. The importance of reliability in production cost estimates is highlighted and the impact of early development on reserve valuations is discussed. The importance of economics throughout all stages of the evaluation process is fundamental.

Laboratory studies of batch and continuous screening of ferrous sinter mixtures (4-0.5 mm) are described. The results are analysed by an equation derived from the first-order rate law for the condition of decreasing screen residue.The results of the studies show that the two screening operations are comparable in all respects if deck length in continuous screening and time in batch screening are interchanged.It is shown that the general screening process is determined by the numerical values of the screening rate constants of each of the particle sizes in the feed mixture and that the relationship between these constants and the particle size/screen aperture ratios is related to the appropriate probability function of the same ratios.It is also shown that the screening rates decrease exponentially with the amount of near-mesh material present in the feed and that oversize particles can increase these screening rates for some screen motions and decrease them for others.

With the depletion of high-quality ores, the efficiency of extracting difficult gold ores through flotation and leaching becomes very important in the mining industry. Iron contaminants, sulfide and carbonaceous coatings on the surface of gold and gold bearing minerals significantly hinder the recovery of gold during gold processing. As the surface of gold minerals is easily contaminated, coatings of iron oxides and iron hydroxides originated from the grinding process and oxidation of iron sulfides will cause a retarding effect on both gold flotation and leaching.To mitigate the processing issues caused by undesirable surface coatings on gold minerals, a new technology in treating surface coatings of iron contaminants has been developed. The pulp potential and pH of the slurry are altered to allow dissolution of surface coatings which are further excluded by the use of complexing reagents. The current work shows that iron contaminants can be removed from the surfaces of gold through Eh-pH adjustment and chelation which result in significantly improved gold flotation response. The addition of complexants aids the formation of iron chelates to prevent the iron species in the solution from forming iron oxide and iron hydroxide in the flotation conditions.CITATION:Wei, R and Peng, Y, 2014. THE problem of satisfactorily eliminating the fumes and dust which are unavoidably produced in various metallurgical and manufacturing industries is one which has received considerable attention in the past, and has been the subject of much investigation and research. The solution of this problem was urgently desired for two reasons, the principal one being the fact that a considerable percentage of the total process losses in many industries was represented by the commercial values of the fumes and dust that escaped from the stack.The other reason is that, in some instances, the emission of the matter is regarded as objectionable. Various methods have been designed with a view to solving the problem thus presented, and the latest development that has beendesigned is the process of electrostatic precipitation. Continued investigational and developmental work with this process has already demonstrated its applicability to many industries, and new uses to which the process can be put are being opened up. Its use is already widespread, and the economic success that has attended its application in most instances would indicate that its use will become more general in the future.It has proved its ability to treat gases over wide ranges of temperature, and has successfully handled various types of fumes whose chemical characteristics differ very considerably. In many processes it has now come to be regarded as standard equipment.HISTORY OF ELECTRICAL PRECIPITATIONThe first recorded observations on the influence of an electrified insulated wire on gases containing solid particles in suspension was made as early as 1824 by Hohlfeld, in Leipzig. He found that, if he electrified a wire hung in a bottle filled with smoke, the smoke cleared rapidly, and a deposit formed on the sides and bottom of the bottle.

An experimental and theoretical study has been made of the drainage behaviour of two-dimensional packed beds drained from an outlet in the sidewall of the bed in order to identify the fundamental me- chanisms involved. Under these conditions a grad- ient develops in the air-liquid interface in the direction of flow with the interface tilting towards the outlet. This results in a significant volume of liquid being retained in the packing on completion of draining when the interface first reaches the bed outlet. Residual liquid volume and the shape of the air-liquid interface as a function of time were det- ermined experimentally in a two-dimensional packed bed where the packing consisted of glass spheres ranging in size from 0.6 to 10 mm dia. and the bed was drained at superficial liquid velocities rang- ing from 0.007 to 0.32cm/s. The test liquids used were water, glycerine/water solutions and kerosene resulting in a viscosity range of 1 to 10 mPa.s and a surface tension range of 0.0243 to 0.072 N/m. Assuming laminar flow within the bed, a compu- tational model was developed to predict both the liquid residual ratio and the temporal evolution of the drainage profile within the bed. The computed results were in good agreement with the experimental data over the entire range of conditions invest- igated. the computational model was used to estimate the relative importance of the effects of changes in hearth conditions on residual slag volume for typ- ical blast furnace operating conditions. On the basis of the computed results it is concluded that coke quality is a major parameter affecting hearth drainage performance.

The addition of a thallous salt to the cyanide leach of a calcined pyritic concentrate causes a marked increase in the"rate of extraction of gold. This probably is due to the activation of passive gold by.th,e. thallous ions'.''Lea'd, bismuth, and mercury salts, which should produce ' a, similai effect, fail to do so. It is postulated that'this latter result, together with'the reprecipitation of silver at low cyanide levels, is due to the presence of soluble sulphide. The use of thallous salts to reduce leaching time is discussed briefly.

The Harima works were established in 1964 and started operation in 1966. The initial capacity was 3500 t/month of zinc and 1500 t/month of lead. Until 1990 a lot of improvements had been made and the capacity had increased 6600 t/month of zinc and 2200 t/month of lead without enlarging the furnace size. During the ten weeks campaign shut-down at the end of 1990, many modifications were carried out including the enlargement of the furnace shaft area. By these changes, the capacity has gone up to 7500 t/month of zinc and 2500 t/month of lead. In the sinter plant, the amount of SO2 rich gas supplied to the acid plant was raised to 50 000 Nm3/h from 43 500 Nm3/h. An electrostatic precipitator was adopted instead of a venturi scrubber to clean the rich gas. Oxygen enrichment has been continuously operated since August 1991, because the furnace capacity is more than the rate of sinter production. Utilisation of the sinter plant is high being as much as 97 per cent and the sulphur burning rate has been increased. In 1990 the furnace was replaced except the hearth. The shaft area was enlarged to 19.4 m2 from 15.3 m2. The target blast was designed to be more than 36 000 Nm3/h. Tuyere layout was changed to prevent slag breakouts. Due to these modifications shaft condition has been very good. Automatic launder jacket cleaners were installed to increase the lead cooling efficiency. Many other improvements and developments were also made. Coke powder injection from the tuyeres has been successfully operated since April 1987.

An investigation was carried out at a US underground mine to characterise diesel aerosols and to asses the effects of various control technologies on the concentrations and properties of particulate matter and gases emitted by heavy-duty diesel-powered equipment. This study was dedicated to evaluating the impact on mine air quality of contemporary diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems installed on mining equipment. Additional efforts were made to assess the effect of blended biodiesel fuels, yellow grease and soy, ultra-low sulfur fuel, a fuel emulsion and of selected diesel oxidation catalysts on air quality and emissions. The carbon analysis performed on the collected samples showed that the tested DPF systems reduced the mass concentrations of elemental carbon in mine air by between 70 per cent and 92 per cent. In addition, TEOM measurements, collected during these tests, showed that the total diesel particulate matter concentration in the mine air was reduced by greater than 65 per cent when DPF systems were used. The tested biodiesel blends were found to reduce elemental carbon concentrations in the mine air by between 49 per cent and 33 per cent, for the B20 (20 per cent biodiesel/80 per cent #2 diesel) of soy and yellow grease respectively and between 66 per cent and 56 per cent for the B50 (50 per cent biodiesel/50 per cent #2 diesel) of soy and yellow grease, respectively. The water-in-diesel fuel emulsion was shown to reduce elemental carbon concentrations by as much as 85 per cent. NO2 measurements showed an increase in the maximum concentrations of NO2 when catalysed DPF systems were used instead of mufflers.

One of the main challenges for current and future mining and processing methodologies is to understand the characteristics of the rock so that its behaviour in one or more parts of the mining process chain can be predicted. Features such as rock texture, mineralogy or border complexity between minerals control how the rock behaves from the processing plant through to the final products, including tailings disposal and thus can affect the feasibility of the project from technical, economic and environmental impact perspectives. Understanding how the mineralogy and texture of rock affect its behaviour in mineral processing is a demanding area of research and is essential knowledge in predicting the processability of complex ores in different stages. This study aims to demonstrate that different types of relevant information can be extracted from a range of currently available analytical methods. However, this information can be used in a complementary way for building a more comprehensive rock characterisation at the microscale and better-predicting ore processing characteristics from the intact rock through to tailing disposal. Metal-rich slurries discharged from excess-enthalpy geothermal wells at Kawerau (NZ) indicate that an efficient ore precipitation mechanism operates in some feedzones. In our conceptual model, which takes into account the relative permeabilities of liquid and gas phases in boiling fluids, a metal-precipitating liquid phase is effectively immobilised along boiling fronts, leading to the formation of highly concentrated ore. Chemical equilibrium and heat/mass transport modeling demonstrate the general applicability of this conceptual model to hydrothermal eruption environments.

Models which have been presented in the literature consider only selected aspects of dense medium cyclone operation, are empirical in nature and generally relate only to severely limited ranges of operating parameters. This paper reports progress towards development of a more comprehensive and robust model. The data base consists of partitioning parameters developed using density tracers and conventional coal sampling and analysis techniques, together with recordings of parameters such as cyclone dimensions, feed pressure, medium size distribution and product media densities.. These data were drawn from 15 Australian coal preparation plants. To elucidate the effects of important operating parameters on medium behaviour and on the partitioning of large particles a series of pilot scale tests was also conducted. The present model consists of eight sub-models which relate to particular aspects of dense medium cyclone operation such as medium flowrates and densities, or size- by-size separation densities and Eps. The model structure follows a logical progression which clearly demonstrates the importance of understanding medium behaviour before attempting to predict partitioning performance. The model also attempts to define the conditions under which yield losses due to unstable "surging" discharge may occur.
