The idea of bonding two dissimilar ferrous metals, and making use of both, is an old one. Tips have been brazed onto tool shanks for many years. The bonding of larger pieces to form whole bars and sheets has also been accomplished, but has received little attention in the technical literature, although a number of patents have been issued covering various methods for its accomplishment. There are three main motives behind the manufacture of composite steels. One is that the physical properties of one steel may supplement those of another; a useful, but at the same time, hard, brittle steel may be backed by a soft ductile one, or a stainless steel may be backed by a steel possessing greater strength. Another motive is direct lowering of cost; an expensive steel may be backed by a less expensive one, bringing down the cost of the piece as a whole. The third motive is an indirect lowering of cost, as when a useful steel is backed by a steel that is easier to machine, so that machining cost on a finished product is lowered considerably. Often more than one of these motives lead to a decision to use a composite steel. Previous Methods There are two methods in use that result in tolerably good bonds between ferrous metals: (1) the casting method, and (2) what we shall call the "heat-pressure" method. This "heat-pressure" method covers processes in which the bond is made between two prepared surfaces by heating them and then applying pressure. The behavior of the reverse-combustion process in a linear adiabatic system is theoretically investigated by means of an idealized physical model. T his model is described by a pair of non-linear equations involving heat and mass transfer which are coupled by a concentration-dependent reaction-rate function of the Ar-rhenius type. The differential equations governing the quasi steady-state temperature and concentration distributions are approximately solved by using either physical or mathematical simplifications. It is shown that the reverse -combustion process can be mechanistically described by simple physical models whose behavior equations can be solved formally. It is further demonstrated that the derived reverse-combustion equations can be solved numerically within the error limits for the experimental data. The theoretically predicted peak temperature-flux-velocity relationship exhibits reasonable agreement with experimental data obtained from Athabasca tar sand. The principal contribution of this work lies in its usefulness as a starting point for developing a more comprehensive theory. A description of the vaporization-coking process must be obtained; then, the theory must be extended to three dimensions to include geometrical effects and heat losses. INTRODUCTION In another paper,'" he physical processes visualized as occurring during reverse combustion have been described. In this paper, the extent to which an elementary theory can account for experimental observations is determined. Theoretical results that can be used to estimate some of the behavior characteristics of importance to this process are also presented. Since it is not possible to include all the features of the combustion mechanism of which we are currently aware, the mathematical formulation refers to the highly idealized system developed herein. This simplified physical model is based on the simultaneous transfer of mass and heat accompanied by a chemical reaction: it is described mathematically by a pair of coupled, nonlinear differential equations. Similar sets of equations have been studied extensively in the field of flame propagation; an excellent review of these investigations has been published by Evans.1 FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM It will be recalled that the experiments are performed with a thin-walled cylindrical tube that is uniformly packed with sand and oil. The system is maintained substantially adiabatic by means of heat supplied externally in such a way that the radial temperature gradient in any plane normal to the axis of the tube approaches zero. Initially, the tube is at ambient temperature, except at one end where it is rapidly heated to a predetermined temperature. When the prescribed temperature is achieved, air is caused to flow into the cold end of the tube. As the oxygen in the air stream contacts the hot oil, a localized exothermic reaction takes place. The generated heat is conducted and convected away from the reaction zone so that definite temperature and concentration profiles are rapidly established and move uniformly in a direction opposite to that of the air flow (Fig. 1). As a consequence of this mode of oxidation, all of the oxygen in the air is consumed; then, the remaining nitrogen and the gaseous combustion products sweep out all vaporized hydrocarbons and leave an immobile hydrocarbon-coke on the sand.

THE. Owyhee Tunnels in eastern Oregon were started in the early part of 1930, and were completed early in 1932, with the excep-tion of the Magoffin contract. One tunnel is a large water tun-nel, and the other is a small water tunnel; each is approximately tour miles long. Modern equipment was used to full advantage, and remarkably fast time was made during the driving period. The ,J. F. Shea Co., con-tractors, of Portland, Oregon, have broken established records in the smaller tunnel. Their methods are described in detail. The time of a complete round has been reduced by intelligent handling of mechanical shoveling, and this article records some of the useful facts developed. Charles A. Shea (president of the J. F. Shea Co., and secretary of The Six Companies, Inc.) not only granted permission to publish this article, but placed the company's complete daily reports at the writer's disposal. These reports were made out to conform with previous records upon important tunnel work, and enable a comparison to be made of actual averages, rather than ideal cycles, or representative cycles. Gilbert Shea, present superintendent, has been helpful with time, criticisms, and corrections of the information presented. Morton S. Boss, superintendent during the first 15 months of the tunnel work, gave many hours of his time during two visits lasting over two weeks. The whole staff of the J. F. Application of technology to the search for new deposits went on apace in 1963. Traditional methods, aided by modern communications, were successful in some out-of-the way corners of the world that had not been adequately prospected, but the co-ordination of several mutually supporting techniques is necessary to define exploration targets in most areas today. Although these obviously include geophysics and geochemistry, which are treated elsewhere in this issue, geology continues to play a major role. As the search focuses on less and less obvious targets there will be more need than ever to "pull out all the stops." Any anomaly may have significance and must be evaluated as a possible lead. Ability to detect them increases as the laboratory workers refine techniques for measuring physical, chemical, and isotopic properties; it will be increasingly the responsibility of the exploration geologist to understand and apply these to economic problems. Simple propecting, the search for outcrops of recognizable ores of traditional types, was perhaps most successful for iron. Potentially large deposits of high-grade magnetite-specularite-hematite ore have been found in the Mary River area near the north end of Baffin Island. The ore holds up four hills that stand some 1500 ft above the surrounding country; obviously they were ripe for discovery by the first person to come across them, in this case Murray Watts, president of British Ungava Explorations, Ltd, As preliminary examination indicates a lump ore averaging 68 to 70% iron, these deposits may be commercial in spite of the unfavorable climate and their isolation from world markets.

OVER the past few years, metallic arc welding has been extended to steels of the hardenable type. As compared with other methods of fabrication, production has been facilitated, service performance frequently has been improved, and the overall results have been so favorable that engineers and production men have placed great emphasis on this application of welding. The metallurgist and welding engineer, however, have been confronted with new problems, since, for one reason, the harder steels are more apt to crack and special precautions must be taken if sound joints are to be procured. Some of the factors that are pertinent to this problem are metallurgical, and it is an object of this contribution to discuss steel manufacture and processing methods and to show how their control assists in reducing the hazard of cracking. By this time, the problem of cracking specifically underbead cracking, or "hard cracks," or parent-metal cracks-is well known, and a large amount of work has been published, both here and abroad, dealing with this subject.1 The tests described are made under restraint to facilitate cracking and, are so designed that a semiquantitative, or at least a relative, value of the cracking tendency is obtained. As one would expect, it has been reported that the incidence of cracking increases with the carbon and alloy content of the steel. More specifically, the cracking tendency is said to increase with the hardenability of the steel, though it is now recognized that the situation is not so simple. The phenomenon itself, on the other hand, has been but loosely described, and it is in only broad generalizations that this cracking has been related to steel metallurgy. Thus, while it has been abundantly demonstrated that the hardenable aircraft steel, S.A.E. 4130, must tend to crack when arc-welded, the problem still remains of why two lots of the same composition and the same hardenability can vary so greatly in cracking tendency, or what it is about the prior metallurgical history that so strongly affects the results. Further, while the efficacy of preheating and postheating in preventing cracking is recognized and utilized in production, the mechanism by which they function seems not to have been described. These points are thought to be significant in the production of steel for fabrication by metallic arc welding and, hence, of interest to mill and process metallurgists and welding engineers. Consequently, it is another object of this paper to discuss the mechanism of parent-metal cracking, including the influence of the condition of the steel and the control of cracking by manipulation of the time-temperature conditions during and after welding. A new method of rating the cracking. tendency is also discussed, and the results of the test are related to steel composition and structure or prior history. THE mine and plant of the United Verde Copper Co., located in Yavapi County, at Jerome, Arizona, have been described in various technical publications and, therefore, a brief outline of its essential features will suffice. The orebodies are of the schist replacement type, the main sulfide mass being a large lens-shaped body approximately 7 acres in cross-sectional area. In general, the mineralization is found along the iron-schist contact, with the orebodies extending-about 1000 ft. along this contact and varying from a few feet to 250 ft. in width. The mine is located on a mountain slope and has openings into it on three horizons, as follows: 1. Raises and ore passes open vertically into the shovel pit. These extend down to the 1000-ft. level, where they terminate as loading bins in the Hopewell adit. The main fan intake air shaft, which also extends vertically down to the 1000-ft. level, has its surface opening on the hillside at the extreme north end of the shovel pit, and the main mine air return exhausts through a raise at the extreme south end of the shovel pit. 2. The 500-ft. level adit. 3. The Hopewell adit on the 1000-ft. level. The mine has a vertical downward extent of 2000 ft. below the 1000-ft. level. Underground operations are carried on through two main shafts, both of which are wholly underground. Shaft 5 is the ore-hoisting shaft. It has three compartments and extends from the 800 to the 3150-ft. level. Shaft 6 is the service shaft, and is used for lowering and hoisting men and material. It has a large cage compartment and three smaller compartments for counterweights, ladderway, and pipe and power lines. This shaft extends from the 500 to the 2550-ft. level, and is now being extended to the 3000-ft. level. An air shaft for the downward movement of fresh air from the fan has been provided, and extends to the 2550-ft. level at this time. Work has been started to extend this air shaft to the 3000-ft. level. A return airway for vitiated mine air, in the form of raises and short connecting drifts, extends downward to the 2100-ft. level.

Gem materials, comprising those minerals and closely allied natural substances used for personal adornment, for the fashioning of ornamental objects, or for other decorative purposes, have been valued in human commerce for thousands of years. Amber, jet, natural glasses, and at least 15 mineral species were sought and used by primitive man, and most of the materials in common use today were known well before the time of Christ. Their variety is remarkably great, and the traceable relationships among their respective sources, modes of occurrence, properties, and histories of production, preparation, and valuation are extremely complex. Their uses have been affected by numerous shifts in fashion, and from time to time by superstition, by decrees of church and state, by personal interpretations of religious significance, and by various presumptions concerning medicinal value and influence on human behavior (Ball, 1935, 1950; Kunz, 1913; Pogue, 1915; Whitlock, 1946). Thanks to their durability, portability, and relative scarcity, some gem stones have been employed as media of exchange, and the investment value of the more precious stones has long been recognized and exploited, especially in Asiatic and European countries. Demands for gem materials have stimulated trade among various peoples for centuries, and they also were responsible for much early geographic exploration. During more recent times they have prompted numerous geological studies and a considerable amount of research on the growth and properties of crystals. Apart from decorative uses, some naturally occurring gem materials also are employed directly in numerous fields of industry. Substances that are manufactured for gem or industrial uses are termed synthetic gem materials; most of these correspond in composition and crystal structure to certain minerals found in nature. Imitation materials are those whose use is based upon their resemblance to substances of different composition and greater intrinsic value. Gem stone is a designation commonly restricted to those materials suitable for personal adornment, and the complementary term ornamental stone is applied to the remaining materials not used industrially. This distinction is arbitrary and somewhat inconsistent, owing to numerous geographic differences and historical shifts in end uses. Further, there is a complete gradation between the category of ornamental stones and that of dimension stone. Substances that lose their identity in use are excluded from the gem category; thus a transparent crystal of beryl would not be classified as a gem stone if it were processed as a source of beryllium metal. The adjectives precious and semiprecious have been employed as a means for distinguishing different gem materials on the basis of recognized value. Diamond, emerald, ruby, and sapphire consistently have been regarded as precious stones, and in cut form they commonly are referred to as the noble gems. Opal, pearl, turquoise, and chrysoberyl also have been classed as precious at various times. In recent years, however, it has been increasingly recognized that no satisfactory distinction can be based upon assessed value or any group of specific properties, and now all gem stones normally are referred to as precious. Indeed, the tendency is to extend this term to include many of the so-called ornamental stones, and the designation semiprecious has been essentially discontinued. Unlike most mineral commodities of economic value, gem materials are little altered in processing for end uses. Some stones are used in essentially their natural form, and most are reshaped and polished without significant changes in their fundamental properties. THOSE of you who, like myself, have had the privilege of hearing previous Howe Memorial Lectures will note, and I hope without too much disaffection, that for the first time in this series of lectures iron has been chosen as the subject. I feel sure that the predominant choice by previous lecturers of subjects relating to steel has been principally in deference to the well-known interest this subject held for Professor Howe, and that their choice has not reflected any lack of respect for the material, iron. Nevertheless, in the face of this record, I feel some diffidence in introducing this "Cinderella" of materials into the circle of distinguished subjects hitherto treated by Howe lecturers, which is relieved only by the fact that I hope to be able to present some evidence that this Cinderella has at last undergone some of those magical trans-formations which render her acceptable even in the society of her dis-tinguished sister, steel. Fortunately I can cite the old master himself in support of my choice of subject and recall to you that Professor Howe by no means overlooked or neglected cast iron in the long course of his metallurgical meditations. Indeed his attention was early arrested by a metallurgical aspect of cast iron which he believed and we still recognize as of the most funda-mental importance-namely, the genesis of graphite in gray iron and the means for the control of its quantity and distribution. He made some comments over 20 years ago regarding the nature of J. E. Johnson's oxygenated iron which indicate that even then his thoughts were taking directions which today we are finding it useful to explore in connection with the theory of high-strength iron. Had we had in the subsequent years the continuing benefit of Professor Howe's illuminating consider-ation of this important subject, our progress in the improvement of cast iron would undoubtedly have been even more rapid.

The decision of the Supreme Court -of the United States not to review the findings of the lower courts closes an interesting chapter in the mining litigation that has arisen as a result of the extralateral feature of the mining law. The time seems opportune to record some of the important geological features, and also some of the legal features, of the controversy, in the hope that these will be permanently accessible to members of the mining profession. After many rumors of litigation, the Utah Consolidated Mining Co. sued its neighbor for the ore that had been, it was alleged, wrongfully extracted from its so-called Yampa limestone lode. This ore lay beneath Utah-Apex surface and was claimed by virtue of the extralatera1 rights conferred on the Utah Consolidated Co. through the ownership of certain specific mining claims, one of the principal claims being the Yampa. Previous to bringing suit, the Utah Consolidated Co. had strengthened its position by purchasing the Old Yampa mine and by making an agreement with the Utah Metal & Tunnel Co., which gave it clearer title to the outcrop of the Highland Boy limestone. Access to the workings of the Utah-Apex Co. was secured and reciprocal privileges gave Utah-Apex representatives the right to enter the properties of the Utah Consolidated Co. This resulted in the Utah-Apex immediately bringing countersuit for ore alleged to have been wrongfully extracted from under its surface in the Leadville country, see Fig. 4. Six cases came up for consideration: five related to the original suit and the countersuit, and one related to the Dana extralateral claims of the Utah-Apex Co. Well-known attorneys, geologists, and mining engineers were engaged by both sides, and thousands of feet of development work were done to prove or disprove ideas that would sustain the contentions of the opposing sides. Models of wood, wire, and glass were constructed to present clearly to the court the actual physical relations. A general theory for the growth of lamellar and rod eutectics is presented. These modes of growth depend on the interplay between the diffusion required for phase separation and the formation of interphase boundaries. The present analysis of these factors provides a justification for earlier approximate theovies. The conditions for stability of rod and Lanlellar structures are consitleved in terms of the mechanisms by which the structure can change. The mechanisms considered include both small adjustments to the lnnzellar spacing due to the motion of lamellar faults, and catastrophic changes due to instabilities. It is concluded that stable growth occurs at or near the minimum interface undevcooling for a gizierz growth rate. The conseqrlences of the existence of a diffusion boundary layer at the interface are discussed. The experimental results for the variation of growth rate, undercooling, and Lanzellar spacing are cornpared with the theory. We believe that the theory presented in this paper provides an adequate basis for understanding the complex phenomena of lanzellar and rod eutectic growth. The growth of lamellar eutectics has been the subject of several theoretical and many experimental studies. The foundations for the theoretical work were laid by zenerl and Brandt2 in their analyses of the growth of pearlite. Zener estimated the effect cf diffusion, and took into account the surface energy of the lamellar structure. He found that the lamellar structure could grow in a range of growth rates at a given undercooling provided the lamellar spacing was appropriate for the growth rate. Since pearlite grows with only one growth rate and one lamellar spacing at a given undercooling, there is clearly an ambiguity in the theory. Zener removed this ambiguity by postulating that the growth rate was the maximum possible at the given undercooling. He predicted then that the product of the growth velocity v and the square of the lamellar spacing A should be constant, i.e., A2v = const. Brandt2 started out by assuming that the interface between the lamellae and austenite was sinusoidal. Because of this, the ambiguity encountered by Zener did not arise. Brandt was able to obtain an approximate solution to the diffusion equation, but, since he did not take into account the surface energy, his considerations are incomplete. Tiller3 applied some of these ideas to the growth of eutectics, and proposed a minimum undercooling condition to replace the maximum velocity condition used by Zener. These conditions are formally identical. Hillert4 extended the work of Zener. He found a solution to the diffusion equation assuming the interface to be plane. Taking surface energy into account, and applying Zener's maximum condition, he was able to calculate an approximate shape of the interface. Jackson et al.5 used an iterative method employing an electric analog to the diffusion problem to refine the calculation of interface shape. It was found that the interface shape calculated from a plane-interface solution to the diffusion equation was negligibly different from the exact solution. The method provided an analog only for eutectics for which the volumes of the two phases are equal, growing from a melt of exactly eu-tectic composition. There has also been considerable experimental work on eutectics, Several experimenters8-10 found that A2v is constant as predicted by Zener.1 Hunt and chilton10 demonstrated that ?T/v1/2 is also a constant for the Pb-Sn system as predicted. Lemkey et al.11have recently found A2v to be constant for a rod eutectic. In the present paper, we present the steady-state solution for the diffusion equation for a lamellar eutectic growing with a plane interface, for the general case, that is, with no restriction on the relative volumes of the two phases, and with the melt on or off eutectic composition. A similar solution is also found for a rod-type eutectic. Expressions are obtained for the average composition at the interface and the average curvature of the interface. These equations for the average composition and curvature are similar in form to those derived by Zener1 and Tiller,3 and provide a justification for some of the approximations made by these authors. The mechanisms by which the spacing in a lamellar structure can change are considered. The important mechanism for small changes in lamellar spacing involves a lamellar fault. Examination of the stability of lamellar faults leads to the conclusion that the growth occurs at or near the extremum.* The insta- bilities which can develop in a rodlike structure are also discussed, resulting in the conclusion that this structure also grows at or near the extremum. Comparison of the conditions for rod and lamellar growth permits a prediction of the surface-energy anisotropy required to produce rods or lamellae for various volume-fraction ratios. The diffusion equation predicts the existence of a diffusion boundary layer at the eutectic interface unless the eutectic has 0.5 volume fraction of each phase and is growing into a liquid of eutectic composition. This boundary layer is such as to make the composition in the liquid at the interface approximately equal to the eutectic composition. This boundary layer permits changes in composition during the zone refining of eutectics. Photographs of the eutectic interface of a growing transparent organic eutectic system have been made. Both the components of this eutectic are transparent organic compounds that freeze as metals do.12 The in-

Studies by many authorities have proved that nitrogen exerts an injurious influence upon iron and steel, but in the casehardening of steel by carbon, nitrogen has the advantage of accelerating the process of cementation. Its influence upon special steels is quite remarkable; it can produce the hardest layer ever known in metallurgical products—a fact hit upon by A. Fry and studied and ascertained by L. Guillet. As there have been very few investigations on the influence of nitrogen on special steels, the writer has listed important articles dealing with this problem and has conducted experiments on nitrification. He also has tested the influence of nickel upon the penetration of nitrogen in electric-arc welding. Nitrogen Process for Surface Hardening In 1919, Siegmonl conducted an experiment known as "Versticken" by treating steel with ammonia gas and found that the steel thus treated has the properties of resisting corrosion. In 1922, L. E. Benson3 nitro-genized iron and steel by sodium nitrate. Fry3-"studied the nitrogen process for surface hardening and published the results of his studies in 1923, 1924 and 1926. Guillet tested special steels containing various elements with the current of ammonia at 500' to 510' C.10, 11, 12, and determined the hardness of some of them at various temperatures.13 He also conducted corrosion tests14 in 1927. Fry15 stated that tinplat-ing could prevent nitrogen from penetrating into steel in the course of nitrification. In 1927, Guillet 65 described the historical notes of the nitrification; and many applications of nitrification were published in the Kruppsche Monatshefte.51, 59, 62, 63, 64-74~75 H. K. High-purity aluminum and an Al-10 pet Zn alloy zvere tested in axial fatigue from 80" to 900oF, at struzn vales of 5 and 150 pct per min, at a strain amplitude of 1 pcl. Cycles to failure were recorded as well as the load per cycle during the entive test. Several grain sizes were examined in each material. Examination was made of modes of deformation, initiation and growlh of' cracks, and vecovery mechanisms such as srbgrain formation and boundary migration. Strain rate effects on cycles to failure are first observed ahoi'e 50O0F, the highev vate vesulting in longer lije. Crack initiclion at room temperature may be truns-or iutercrystalline but fructures are transcrystalline. Abore 600'F, crack iniliation and growth ave largely inlercvystalline. It is only in recent years that studies of deformation and fracture which prevail in fatigue at elevated temperatures have attracted significant attention.' Of such studies considerably less attention was given to high strain-low strain rate fatigue. Moreover, the majority of high-temperature fatigue studies were performed at conventional machine speeds (1000 to 10,000 cpm). As it is well-demonstrated in uniaxial creep-rupture series, at high strain rates, even at high temperatures, metals undergo work hardening with little or no attendant recovery or recrystallization thus the nature of deformation and fracture which is observed is similar to that encountered at lower temperatures.'-" Thus, for example, fatigue testing of a stainless steel at 750°F does not involve high-temperature deformation processes,2 and might more correctly be termed "fatigue testing at an elevated temperature". It was the purpose of this work to study deformation and fracture in fatigue as a function of low strain rates and temperature, selecting conditions which would result in grain boundary sliding, migration, fold and subgrain formation, and intercrystalline cracking in high-purity aluminum and a high-purity A1- 10 pct Zn alloy. Grain size was an additional variable. Extensive studies of the deformation and fracture behavior of these aluminum materials in simple creep had been done in the authors' laboratory, and were to serve as a basis of comparison for the observed effects in fatigue:'-'' the range of the creep test temperatures was 80° to 1150oF. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The compositions of the 99.99 pct pure A1 and the A1-10 pct Zn alloy are shown in Table I. Button-head specimens, with a liberal fillet, of 0.20 in. diam and of gage length 0.40 in. were machined from wrought bar stock. The ratio of 2:l gage length to diameter was selected after preliminary tests showed that a shorter length gave a shorter life, probably due to end effects, and after evidence of buckling in longer gage length specimens. After machining, the specimens were chemically polished to remove the worked outer layer, and were subsequently heat-treated to stabilize the selected grain sizes. Both the high-purity aluminum and the A1-10 pct Zn alloy were heat-treated to produce grain diameters of approximately 0.5 and 2 mm in each case. These grain sizes are referred to in the text as fine and coarse grain, respectively. One lot of the high-purity aluminum was heat-treated to produce a still coarser grain size in which the cross section was occupied by 2 to 3 grains. This structure is referred to as very coarsegrained. After heat treatment, the specimens were again electropolished. To avoid complications of both stress and strain gradients in the cross section of the specimen, a hydraulic, axial fatigue machine was designed and built. A button-head specimen, 1/2 in. diam at the head, was firmly gripped in a split-type holder free of any play in the grips. The test temperatures varied from 80" to 900°F. The strain amplitude in all of the reported tests was 1 pct for a total strain amplitude of 2 pct. The strain range was set by precision micrometers and measured by a precision dial gage. Constant strain rates of 5 and 150 pct per min were selected so that high-temperature type deformation and fracture would occur in the higher-temperature tests5,6 The strains and strain rates must be regarded as nominal values because they are based on the original specimen dimensions, which changed significantly as a result of necking and crack propagation, as can be observed from Fig. 8. For the elevated-temperature tests, a thermocouple was inserted into a well in the head of the specimen; the selected temperatures could be maintained with less than ± 5oF fluctuation during the entire test. To avoid changes in grain size before the test, specimens were heated to the test temperature in less than 15 min; similarly, they were cooled to room temperature after fracture with an air blast to avoid or minimize recovery or recrystallization. During the fatigue tests, load vs strain curves were recorded by a strain gage load cell for each fatigue cycle. In addition, the maximum values of load amplitude were recorded for the entire test.

Empirical relationships between fracture stress, orientation angle, and diameter of crystal have been determined at 77°K. Orientation ranges of markedly different behavior were found—a law of constant normal stress&apos; of value a (diameter)-1/2 for the fracture of ductile crystals, and a condition of shear stress (or strain) for more brittle crystals. The observations are not consistent with current theories. An interpretation is advanced which is also applicable to observations on the effect of prestrain at room temperature on the subsequent fracture stress at 77°K and to the effect of cyclic stressing on the cleavage strength.&apos;&apos; The law of constunt normal stress&apos; and the brittle ductile transition are also explained. The interpretation is more consistent with the initiation of cracks by intersecting dislocations than with theories based on stress -concentration by dislocation arrays. ZINC single crystals are particularly suited to the study of cleavage because fracture occurs on the basal plane over a wide range of crystal orientations. Analysis of the conditions of stress and strain at fracture in crystals of different orientations should indicate which parameters control the cleavage process. Unfortunately, controversy has arisen over the correct empirical relationship between tensile fracture stress and orientation. Schmid&apos;s observations1,2 favored a &apos;law of constant normal stress&apos;, as observed in other materials.2 For zinc, however, the observed values are far below the theoretical strength and cannot represent the true limit of cohesion between neighboring atomic planes. Hence, the interpretation of such a &apos;law&apos; is not straightforward. Deruyttere and Greenough3,4 found a complex variation between tensile fracture stress and orientation; this variation did not agree with a &apos;law of constant normal stress&apos;. Two theories have been advanced to account for their observations: a) the propagation of cracks from low-angle boundaries,5 and b) the release of energy from piled-up dislocations during crack-propagation.4 The present work resolves the apparent discrepancy between the observations and shows that neither of the above theories are applicable to the tensile fracture of zinc single crystals. A phenomenological explanation, along the lines suggested by Gilman,&apos; is advanced and successfully applied to previously unexplained effects. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS &apos;Crown Special&apos; redistilled zinc was used, except for one comparison series op tests using &apos;Tadanac&apos; electrolytic zinc. Crystals of 1 mm diam, subsequently called &apos;1 mm crystals&apos;, were grown from the melt in vacuo in precision-bore Pyrex tubes internally coated with graphite. Several specimens 1 in. long were cut from each crystal and chemically polished. Jigs were used to minimize handling strains, and crystals were mounted in the Polanyi machine the day prior to testing to allow recovery from any such strains. One-mm crystals were chemically polished for long periods to obtain 0.1 mm (approx) crystals. One-mm crystals were cemented into miniature gimbals by &apos;Araldite&apos; casting resin. The Appendix gives the reasons for using gimbals and the results obtained by other methods. More complete details of all techniques are given elsewhere.7 The symbols and terminology used are as follows: X = orientation angle (angle between tensile axis and line of greatest slope in the basal plane). T = tensile stress (on true cross-section) S,N = shear and normal stress (components of T with respect to the basal plane) ? = shear strain D = crystal diameter. The subscript &apos;f&apos; will be used to denote values at fracture. PART I-ANNEALED CRYSTALS EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS One-mm crystals were used to establish the variation of fracture stress at 77°K with orientation at fracture (Xf), Fig. 1. For 18 deg = Xf = 55 deg, a &apos;law of constant normal stress&apos; was observed. For Xf > 55 deg, the fracture condition approximated to a constant shear stress. At Xf< 18 deg, twinning occurred before fracture so that the results were not typical of homogeneous single crystals,4,8— such specimens will not be considered herein. FOR many years kettles used in the melting and refining of lead and other nonferrous metals and alloys have been made of cast iron. The logic of this probably lies in the fact that cast iron has been known as a material of construction for vessels of this type much longer than steel, and satisfactory fabrication from it has been more easily accomplished and better understood. As the capacity of lead refineries has increased, it has been only natural to increase the size of kettles. Today kettles of 150 to 250 tons are not uncommon. As the size of the kettles increased and better shapes were designed, the uniformity of material of construction became more important. Records kept over comparatively long periods of time have shown that the length of service of kettles has not been uniform. Many causes contribute to this and the importance of each has not yet been evaluated. Kettle design, kettle setting, method of firing and material of construction have been changed from time to time to obtain better service, but the variation in length of service is still great. A kettle may fail during the first few heats or may last through more than one thousand heats. The purpose of this article is not to present the conclusions of a finished piece of research on kettle manufacture and use, but to present a series of observations made over considerable time in the hope that others will publish data and that all may be correlated into a logical scheme which will result in better service and longer kettle life.

Minerals long have been important commodities in international trade. As an inevitable result, the governments of the world have employed a wide variety of programs that affect the flow of trade. Roughly speaking, we may distinguish between the desire of more developed countries (MDCs) like the United States, western Europe, and Japan to control imports of minerals and the concern of less developed countries (LDCs), like India, about exploiting and exporting their minerals. The terminology used to describe different countries and the classification of specific countries into groups is unsettled and often changing. The poorest countries have been characterized as backward, undeveloped, underdeveloped, and developing. The problem seems to be in selecting a term that is both accurate and polite. Less developed seems, for reasons outlined by Hagen [pp. 51-57], the most convenient term. The borderline between an LDC and an MDC is always open to dispute. Objective measures are difficult to develop because of deficiencies in basic data, and enormous conceptual problems arise in making valid comparisons from even good data [see Hagen, pp. 7-28]. Thus, policies of the MDCs can be evaluated chiefly by using a few basic arguments for protectionist attitudes towards international trade. In dealing with the LDCs, a more far-ranging evaluation that covers general economic policy goals, the role of foreign investment, and the indirect effects of trade is required. This duality breaks down when trying to deal with the depressed areas in an MDC; here the issues are more akin to those associated with problems in an LDC. Similarly, variants of arguments used in LDCs appear in debates about foreign investments in MDCs. The whole discussion of minerals in LDCs, moreover, has obvious implications for MDCs like Canada and Australia. They, too, must face problems about the best utilization of their resources. The paper reviews the evolution of electrolytic zinc, describing some of the major obstacles that have been encountered and overcome. The chief remaining limitations of present-day standard practice are: Difficulty of obtaining high extractions, especially from low-grade and complex ores; filtration troubles, if ores contain much soluble silica; and irregularities in electrolysis, if more than certain limited amounts of antimony, arsenic, cobalt; etc., are present in the ores. These factors dictate a relatively high-grade plant feed, thus subjecting the electroytic-zinc process to the same kind of limitations as the zinc smelter. The "high acid process," in which both acid strength and current density are raised to about four times the usual figures, is described. This system concentrates both plant and operations, allows a simple type of flow sheet, and. minimizes some of the difficulties above mentioned. The large-scale operation of the process is described. SOME time ago, at a meeting of the Institute Prof. J. W. Richards1 said, "I take exception to the statement that all the factors in the production of electrolytic zinc were known long ago. There is possible in my opinion an improvement of perhaps 50 per cent. in the new electrolytic processes." An examination of the literature of the subject will show the justness of Professor Richards&apos; contention. The work of the earlier investigators was carried on in the shadow of difficulties that, today, are hardly more than memories. We seldom hear now of zinc sponge, that bête noir of the electrolytic-zinc pioneers. Zinc sponge, was the name given to a peculiar, soft, black, non-adherent form of zinc deposit that was utterly useless for melting into ingot form. At the big plant at Cockle Creek, New South Wales, in 1897, Edgar Ashcroft2 said that the solution in the plant would suddenly, and without ascertainable cause, go "bad" and begin to deposit spongy zinc. The most delicate, even spectroscopic, methods of analysis were unable to detect any difference between "good solution and "bad" solution; either form might change to the other on being kept for a while. Gentlemen of the American Institute of Mining Engineers.—As you well know an application is about to be made to Congress, by the American Society of Civil Engineers, for the appointment of a cornmission composed of persons skilled in the production and use of iron, steel, and other structural materials, whose duty it shall be to test the strength, elasticity, and other quatities of such materials ; not simply the substances used as such, but the members of large structures composed of such materials, of the forms and sizes in which they are actually used. As I understand, the papers that will be read here to-night will have for their object to show the necessity for such tests, and therefore the necessity for the commission asked for. As the representative of the Society of Civil Engineers, I have to thank you, gentlemen of the Mining Engineers, for the great zeal with which yon have taken up this subject, and seconded the efforts of the Civil Engineers; or, perhaps I ought rather to say, initiated the efforts to get a suitable commission appointed to obtain most vitally important information which it is admitted on all hands we do not now possess. In drawing up the memorial to Congress, in connection with some of the ablest and best informed of our Society, and in all the discossions on the subject, I have been struck with the emphasis with which the confession is made, that so little is known of the strength of the larger-sized members constantly used in building structures of the magnitude which the present requirements of the country now demand. For the US coal industry, 1978 was a nightmarish recurrence of 1977 as the United Mine Workers strike cut into production during the first three months of 1978, followed by the strike against the Norfolk and Western Railway during the summer and early autumn. Coking coal production was floored by the one-two punch of environmental constraints on US coke ovens and competition from low-cost, high-quality imports. At the same time, US ex orts of coal fell to their lowest level since 1962. And in the face of all of this, steam coal consumption was sluggish as utilities burned huge amounts of oil to conserve coal stockpiles during the UMW strike. This was followed by decreased electrical demands due to mild summer weather in many parts of the country and dramatically improved availability of hydroelectric power.

Abstract of an address delivered before the Royal Canadian Institute, Toronto, April 16, briefly outlining the importance of mining in the United States, in Canada, and in the world. Comparison is made of the mineral production for 1886, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1929, showing that in the 43 years from 1886 to 1929 that of the world increased nearly tenfold, of the United States over twelvefold and of Canada thirtyfold, but that Canada&apos;s output was equivalent to only 2 per cent of the world total and to 5 per cent of that of the United States in 1929. Statistical tables and graphs show value of production, percentage of world production contributed by Canada and the United States, etc. The mining situation in Canada is briefly reviewed: only those American engineers who have had occasion to examine the figures appreciate the rapidity of growth of Canadian mineral production. The treatment of minerals involves vast complex industries. When we are producing, say, 6 billion annually, the employment of 2 million workers provides indirect support to perhaps 10 million people. Exploiting mineral deposits is peculiar in certain ways, for the deposits are exhaustible, are of rare occurrence when measured in terms of outcrop area compared to total earth area, and may suddenly be handicapped or superseded by new discoveries; moreover, the economic position of the contained metals is &apos;affected by the use of scrap metal and the existence of invisible stocks. The largest and most valuable of the mineral deposits are not the metals, but rather the fuels.
