An in.t!estigation has been made of the equilibrium conditions at 1200°C in the reaction between hydrogen sulfide gas and sulfur dissolved in Fe-Si alloys From this the equilibrium constant, activity coefficient, and activity of sulfur in solution were calculated. A number of studies of the equilibrium of sulfur with iron and iron alloys have given closely agreeing results from which the activity and free energy of the dissolved sulfur may be found. Sherman, El-vander, and chipman1 discussed the significant researches of dilute solutions of sulfur in liquid iron prior to 1950, and the results of this study indicated that the relationship between the ratio of PH2S/PH2 in the environment and the percentage of sulfur in solution is not a linear one. Morris and williams2 studied the equilibrium conditions in the reaction between hydrogen sulfide gas and sulfur dissolved in liquid iron and Fe-Si alloys, and reported that silicon dissolved in iron has a pronounced effect on the equilibrium conditions. They found that the activity of sulfur in iron is increased by the addition of silicon. At a silicon content of 4 pet the activity coefficient of sulfur was about twice that for sulfur dissolved in pure iron. Sherman and chipman3 investigated the chemical behavior of sulfur in liquid iron at 1600°C through the study of the equilibrium: H2 + S = H2S; K = PH2S/PH2 . 1/as [1] From the known equilibrium constant of the reaction between H2, H2S, and S and the experimental data, the activity of sulfur in the melt was determined. They found that the activity coefficient of sulfur defined as fs = as/%s is increased by silicon and decreased by manganese. Morris4 and Turkdogan5 also reported that manganese decreases the activity coefficient of sulfur in liquid iron and iron-base alloys. A recent technique of sulfur analysis developed by Kriege and wolfe6 of the Westinghouse Research Laboratories permits an accurate sulfur analysis of 0.5 * 0.2 ppm in the range of 0.1 to 3 ppm, whereas in the range of 3 to 50 ppm the accuracy is ±1 ppm. This technique of sulfur analysis was utilized in this experiment. Previous unpublished data reported that sulfur analysis by the combustion technique was not accurate below 20 ppm. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Five 5-lb ingots of high-purity Fe-Si were prepared. Three of these ingots were prepared without the addition of manganese but with a variation of silicon contents from 2 to 4 pet. The remaining two ingots contained 3 pet Si with the addition of manganese. Ingots were made at each of three silicon levels: 2, 3, and 4 pet. No alloys were made with less than 2 pet Si since below approximately 1.8 pet Si the binary alloy exhibits a to ? transformation. The two additional ingots of 3 pet Si-Fe were made at each of two manganese levels: 0.20 and 0.50 pet. To minimize the effects, if any, of impurities on the activity of sulfur on Si-Fe, the best metals available were used for melting. All ingots were vacuum-melted in magnesium oxide crucibles. After obtaining samples for chemical analyses, the ingots were processed. This consisted of hot rolling and subsequently cold rolling the alloys. Each ingot was hot-rolled at 1000°C, reheating between every pass to minimize grain growth. All heating was done in a protective argon atmosphere. The slabs were hot-rolled to strips 50 mils thick. After hot rolling, all the material was pickled to remove the scale formed on the surface of the strip during hot rolling. The material was then cold-rolled to 12-mil strips. Single strips of the material used in this experiment were hydrogen-annealed at 1200°C for 16 hr in an alumina tube. Chemical analyses of strips M-1, M-3, M-4, M-7, and M-8 are given in Table I. Sulfur, silicon, and manganese analyses were made from the millings from the cold-rolled 12-mil strips. The oxygen analyses were made from slugs of the as-cast material. The hydrogen sulfide used in these experiments was supplied from cylinders containing a mixture of argon and 1 pet hydrogen sulfide. The parts per million of hydrogen sulfide were determined from the analysis of the exit gas of the annealing furnace during each anneal. The flow rate of hydrogen was approximately 1 liter per min in all anneals. The

The effect of carbon in solid solution on the plastic behavior of thorium was studied by measuring the flow stress of Th-C alloys from 4.2" to 573°K and at several strain rates. Carbon was found to strengthen thorium primarily by increasing the thermally activated component of the flow stress. The strengthening due to carbon was directly proportional to the carbon content and decreased rapidly with increasing temperature up to 423" K. The flow stress also increased with increasing strain rate. The strengthening appears to be due to a strong short-range interaction between carbon atoms and dislocations. A yield point was observed in the Th-C alloys which increased with increasing carbon content. JTREVIOUS study of the mechanical properties of thorium has been confined largely to the measurement of the engineering properties. Work prior to 1956 has been summarized by Milko et al.1 who reported that additions of carbon to thorium sharply increased the room-temperature strength. In addition, the yield strength was observed to decrease rapidly over the temperature range from 25" to 500°C. In 1960, Klieven-eit2 measured the flow stress of thorium containing 400 ppm C. He found that over the temperature range from 78" to 470°K the flow stress was strongly dependent on temperature and rate of deformation. A drop in the load-elongation curve, or a yield point, was observed over most of the above temperature range. Above 470°K, the flow stress was nearly independent of temperature and strain rate. This strong temperature and strain rate dependence of flow stress is not generally observed in fcc metals. It is, in fact, more typical of the behavior reported for bcc metals. Bechtold,3 Wessel,4 and conrad5 have pointed out the striking difference between the commonly studied bcc metals and fcc metals in regard to the effect of temperature and strain rate on the flow stress. Zerwekh and scott6 studied the plastic deformation of thorium reported to contain 12 ppm C. They found that this material did not obey the Cottrell-Stokes law as expected for fcc metals. In addition, they found values of the activation volume smaller by an order of magnitude than expected for an fcc metal. They concluded that thorium was strengthened by a randomly dispersed solute. Thorium differs from many other fcc metals that have been studied extensively in that it shows a relatively high carbon solubility at room temperature. Mickleson and peterson7 report the solubility limit at room temperature to be 3500 ppm C. The lowest value reported is that of Smith and Honeycombe8 who report the limit to be 2000 ppm C at 350°C. The pres- ent investigation was a systematic study of the flow stress and yield point phenomenon of thorium over a broad range of carbon content, temperature, and strain rate. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thorium used in this investigation was produced by the reduction of thorium tetrachloride with magnesium as described by Peterson et a1.' Chemical analysis of the original ingot after arc melting and electron beam melting is shown in Table I. Alloys were prepared by arc melting this thorium with high-purity spectrographic graphite. Threaded specimens with a gage length 0.252 in. diam by 1.6 in. long were used for the constant stress or creep measurements. These specimens were machined from rod which had been cold-rolled and swaged to % in. diam. Tensile specimens were prepared by swaging annealed 3/8 -in.-diam rod to 0.102 *0.001 in. The as-swaged wire was cut to lengths of 2 in., annealed, and the center 1-in. gage length elec-tropolished to 0.100 ±0.001 in. The specimens were gripped for a length of 3 in. at each end by a serrated four-jaw collet which was tightened by a tapered compression nut. No slipping occurred in the grips and negligible deformation was observed outside the 1-in. gage length. Both the creep and tensile specimens were annealed at 730°C under a vacuum of 1 x X Torr. The resulting structures consisted of equiaxed recrystallized grains with a grain size of 3200 grains per sq mm for the tensile specimens and 2200 grains per sq mm for the creep specimens. After the specimens were prepared, samples were analyzed for nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen. The results of these analyses are given in Table 11.

Tracer diffusion of Fe59 has been measured in the a-stabilized Fe-1.8 at. pet V alloy from 700° to 1500°C. The activation energies are obtained in both the presence and absence of magnetic order. Furthermore, it is established that diffusion in the alloy is identical to that in pure iron and consequently the values of Do and Q accurately represent the temperature dependence for self-diffusion. The purpose of this investigation is to obtain an accurate estimate of the temperature dependence for self-diffusion in bee iron in both the presence and absence of magnetic order, and, in so doing, to establish the temperature range of the magnetic effect.&apos;" As the temperature interval suitable for diffusion measurements is severely limited in both bee phases of pure iron because of the intervening fee ? phase, the experiments were performed on an a-stabilized alloy containing 1.8 at. pet V. This alloy is bee over the entire range from room temperature to the melting point. Although there have been several independent investigations of self-diffusion of iron in a, iron,1, 3-6 there still exists considerable disagreement regarding the values of Do and Q for the paramagnetic region. The two systematic studies of diffusion in 6 iron6, 7 previously reported are also only in fair agreement; but in view of the extremely small temperature range available for diffusion studies, i.e., 1390o to 1535oC, this is not surprising. It is comparatively easy to obtain accurate values of Do and Q for the a-stabilized alloy inasmuch as measurements can be made over the entire temperature range -700o to 1500°C. However, in order to assume that these same values apply to pure iron requires careful comparison of the data in the a, and 6 regions in both the alloy and pure iron. We have made several measurements in the appropriate temperature ranges and are unable to establish any systematic difference between the diffusion coefficients of iron in pure iron and in the alloy. We therefore conclude that the values obtained for the alloy are truly applicable to pure iron; the complete evidence favoring this conclusion will be discussed later in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL The experimental methods will be given here only in barest detail since they have been thoroughly de- scribed elsewhere.l, 7 The alloy was prepared by induction melting and chill casting under argon. Diffusion samples were machined from the ingot and annealed in hydrogen for several days at 900°C to give an average grain diameter of 1 to 2 mm. The penetration profiles of the tracer were established by a sectioning technique, the residual activity being counted after the removal of each section. The tracer used is Fe59 which emits two high-energy ? rays of 1.098 and 1.289 Mev, respectively; these were detected by a ? scintillation counter equipped with a pulse-height analyzer. For the measurements in the temperature range -700o to 1130°C the samples were vapor-plated with Fe59, encapsulated in quartz under vacuo, and annealed in resistance-heated furnaces which are controlled to ±1°C. The specimens diffused at higher temperatures are prepared as edge-welded couples, the two halves being separated by a thin washer of the alloy to prevent sintering. The diffusion anneal is then carried out by inductive heating under a dynamic vacuum. The temperature is monitored pyrometrically. RESULTS The diffusion coefficients are obtained from the penetration profiles in the usual way using the error-function complement relationship. The results over the entire temperature range are shown in Fig. 1. In the linear region, 900o < t > 1500°C the least mean squares (lms) values of the diffusion coefficients are given by D = 1.39 exp[-(56.5 ± 1) x 103/Rt] cm2/sec [l] The average departure of the measured diffusion coefficients from the values given by Eq. [1]In order to determine whether or not the slope is truly constant over the entire range from 900" to 1500°C, the data are arbitrarily divided into two groups, the first containing values between -900" and 1133°C and the second between -1133o and 1500°C. The lms values for the two groups are given by Eqs. [2] and [3]: D = 0.519 exp[-55.7 x 103 /RT](900° to 1133°C) cm2/sec [2] D = 1.45 exp[-56.7x103/RT] (1133° to 1500=C) cm2/sec [3] Thus, there is no significant difference between the high- and low-temperature segments of the linear region. Large striation-free single crystals of bismuth have been grown from the melt by rapid freezing. Zone-refined bismuth, together with doping impurities if desired, is placed in a shallow flat-bottomed graphite boat and melted in air with a propane hand torch. The torch is then withdrawn in a manner which causes the melt to freeze direction-ally. Crystallization, which resuires only a few minutes, usually results in the formation of a single crystal even when a seed crystal is not used. Crys -tals of any desired orientation may be grown by using oriented seeds. Undoped crystals grown by this method have residual resistivity ratios greater than 200. THE growth of large single crystals of bismuth by either the Czochralski or horizontal zoning technique is not entirely satisfactory. Specifically, difficulties are encountered in producing single crystals of the required dimensions in all desired orientations, and striations caused by low-angle polysynthetic twins are frequently present in the crystals. In addition, both methods are time-consuming and require special apparatus of some complexity. A simpler method has now been developed for growing large striation-free bismuth single crystals of desired orientation in a short time. Fig. 1 shows a typical setup consisting of a rectangular graphite boat which contains zone-refined bismuth, a 1/8-in.-thick flat quartz plate which covers the entire inner bottom of the boat, and three additional quartz plates about 1/4 in. thick which are used to separate the bismuth from the graphite everywhere except at a small area at the left of the boat. The graphite boat is 1 in. high, and its sides and bottom are about 1/8 in. thick. The quartz plates should be smooth and clean. The graphite boat is heated from the right with a propane torch, as shown in Fig. 1, until the bismuth is completely melted. The melt has the shape of a triangle with a narrow neck at the apex farthest from the torch. The melt is frozen direc-tionally by gradually moving the torch toward the right, away from the boat. The bismuth in contact with the graphite, at the left end of the neck, freezes first. The freezing interface then moves down the neck into the main bulk of material, where it develops a convex shape ideal for the continuation of single-crystal growth. The interface continues to move through the melt until the entire bulk is solid. The entire procedure may be completed, in air, in a matter of minutes. The technique described almost always yields a single crystal whose basal plane is nearly perpendi,cular to the bottom of the graphite boat. In earlier experiments, in which the bottom of the melt was in direct contact with the graphite boat, single crystals were grown with basal planes parallel, perpendicular, or at some intermediate angle to the bottom of the boat. At times the orientation of the bulk of the material differed from the orientation of the material in the narrow neck. In these cases, a nucleation site initiated the growth of a differently oriented crystal, and the thermal conditions favored the new orientation over the initial one. The thermal conditions depend on a number of factors, including the heating technique, the placement, shape, and thickness of the quartz plates, the thickness of the walls and bottom of the graphite boat, and the quantity of bulk bismuth employed. All of these factors, plus the initial orientation and the presence and effectiveness of nucleation sites, will determine the orientation of the final large single-crystal slab. When a crystal of specific orientation is desired, an oriented section of a rapid-freeze crystal is shaped by spark cutting and grinding for use as a seed. To grow a doped crystal, the desired impurity is placed in the graphite boat together with the bismuth chunks and seed. Crystals doped with mercury, cadmium, lead, and selenium have been grown. The rate of freezing is so great that the distribution coefficient of any impurity approximates unity. On a gross scale, therefore, impurities should be more homogeneously distributed in rapid-freeze crystals than in Czochralski or zoned crystals. Because of the possibility of constitutional supercooling, however, it is quite possible that impurities are not homogeneously distributed on a microscopic scale in the rapid-freeze crystals. Generally the single crystal slabs which have been prepared are initially 5 to 7 mm thick. Thicker crystals may be obtained by using one of these slabs as a seed. The opinion has been widely held that the corrosion of alpha brass occurs by the selective solution of zinc. As late as 1939, Fink1 and Evans2 suggested that in the initial stage of the corrosion the selective solution of zinc produces copper-rich areas, which subsequently act as cathodes that facilitate the deposition of copper. Previously Abrams3 had shown that most of the copper found on corroded brass was re-deposited and not residual, although he did not consider the nature of the initiation of the corrosion process. Enough data exist to indicate that any metal surface is sufficiently heterogeneous to provide the anodes and cathodes necessary for the initiation of corrosion.4,5 Thus, for alpha brass we need postulate not an initial selective solution of zinc, but only the existence of local differences in electrochemical potential. The heterogeneity responsible for potential differences may arise from oxide and other films as well as from alloy concentration gradients. Even though selective corrosion may be possible in some alloy systems, previous data on alpha brass as well as the experimental work reported in this paper do not require this supposition. Bengough and May16 in a discussion of Abrams&apos; paper, first suggested the addition of small amounts of arsenic (0.03 per cent) to a1pha brass to prevent the redeposition of copper (dezincification). This suggestion was later substantiated by Nixon.7 In their studies of the inhibiting influence of arsenic, Evans and Fink were led to the selective-solution hypothesis in order to explain the initial corrosion of such alloys. They believed that an arsenic film covered anode areas and prevented the formation of copper-rich spots capable of acting as cathodes for the deposition of copper. They did not consider, however, the mechanism by which the arsenical film was formed. Bengough and May,a in another publication, suggested that the commonly found gray or black arsenical film may act to: (I) carry oxygen to the brass surface, (2) increase the discharge potential of copper on brass, (3) precipitate cuprous chloride from colloidal suspension in chloride solutions. Masing9 assumed that the film found upon arsenical brass was metallic arsenic. His measurements of hydrogen overvoltage of bulk arsenic led him to believe that the inhibition of dezincification occurs because the overvoltage of a brass surface is lowered by the arsenic film. He reasoned that this film would permit the more rapid reduction of hydrogen at the cathode, which would prevent the redeposition of copper. In a recent paper,10 we have pointed out that the film formed during the corrosion of arsenical brass and copper in stagnant solutions is essentially arsenious oxide (As2O3),

THE development of huge production facilities and of new or improved processes for manufacturing magnesium from its raw sources has been an outstanding achievement of this war. Furthermore, at least one new method has reached a stage of pilot production that offers promise. Its potentialities seem to indicate that a reduction in cost and simplification or elimination of problems incident to the use of at least one of the present processes are quite within the realm of possibility. Although magnesium of very high purity (99.9 per cent and higher) is obtained, and the rate of recovery reasonable (60 to 70 per cent), the ferrosilicon reduction process is open to a serious objection, which at the time its use was proposed was thought to be sufficient to raise some doubts as to its success, at least on a high production basis. The temperature range at which the reaction is carried out-namely, 2100° to 2150°F.-is very close to the failure temperature of the material of which the retort is made. It is so close that for a time it was assumed it might make commercial use of the process an impossibility. However, at the time under discussion, the demand for magnesium was so great that it was felt by those who had to go ahead and produce this essential metal that the emergency warranted their taking a chance on this process. Subsequent developments have fully justified the soundness of their decision. Fortunately for the war effort, when the plants were put into operation it was discovered that although the retorts did collapse in rather short periods of time, as predicted, they could be blown back into operable shape by application of high-pressure air. This practical method of operation so relieved the situation that the problem disappeared. Nevertheless, if the process had not been successful, or the production of magnesium by the electrolytic process had not been able to keep pace with demands, our war program would have been seriously impaired. "FIRELESS COOKER" PROCESS For this reason a program was set up and assigned for the development of a new method that had been suggested to the War Production Board in 1941. It is believed justifiable in terming the method "new" for several reasons: (1) while utilizing the same (ferrosilicon) process as the Pidgeon, hence involving similar reactions, the type of retort or furnace is essentially different, (2) the method of operation, reaction temperatures, etc., differ materially, and, most important of all, (3) the problems to be overcome in making the process successful were not and could not have been anticipated by anything previously known about the Pidgeon process. The relation between the properties of electric logs and the fluid used in drilling a well is briefly discussed in this paper, and the fact that the resistivity of the drilling mud and its filtrate can appreciably affect such logs is shown. Apparatus was designed and a procedure established to determine the effect of various factors on the resistivity of drilling mud. Five muds commonly employed in California were tested and the following observations were made: I. The effect of raising the temperature from 80°F. to 180°F. is to decrease the resis-tiviiy of the mud or filtrate approximately 50 per cent. 2. The resistivity of the mud in most cases closely approximates that of its filtrate. 3, The change in the resistivities of muds caused by the addition of chemical is not the same function of the amount of chemical added for each mud. 4. The effect produced by increased sodium chloride content is to reduce markedly the resistivity of the mud and its filtrate. 5. Weighting materials, such as Baroid and limestone, tend to increase the resistivity of drilling mud. 6, Cement and counteracting reagents reduce mud resistivity. Introduction During recent years, the practice of "electrically logging9&apos; a geologic formation by means of a system of electrodes lowered in a well bore has provided data of inestimable value concerning the nature of the sediments penetrated. Thus, it is generally possible, by means of electric logs, to distinguish readily the differences between shales, sandstones, cherts, limestones, and other rock forms. The distinguishing characteristics recorded in this manner have made possible long-range and closely detailed mapping and visualization of deeply buried structures1-5 to a degree not to be obtained with a reasonable expenditure of money by any other means at present in use. Besides being of value in correlation work, electric logs have been found, in some instances, to be useful in estimating the nature of fluid contained within the pores of a rock. In special cases, even the relative permeabilities at different horizons have been determined.6 That electric logs should reflect in some measure such physical properties of rocks as porosity and permeability and, in addition, give rise to data pertaining to the fluid content of rock interstices, becomes evident when the conditions giving rise to the electrical phenomena measured are known. However, it is not the purpose of this paper to review the present status of electric logging; rather, the reader is referred to the papers cited on page 220 for the principles and practice involved. Importance of Drilling FLuid in Electric Logging Because the drilling fluid must be the medium through which the electric logging device is made to traverse the formations penetrated by a borehole, and since, in general, the drilling mud completely surrounds

The distinguishing characteristics recorded in this manner have made possible long-range and closely detailed mapping and visualization of deeply buried structures1-5 to a degree not to be obtained with a reasonable expenditure of money by any other means at present in use. Besides being of value in correlation work, electric logs have been found, in some instances, to be useful in estimating the nature of fluid contained within the pores of a rock. In special cases, even the relative permeabilities at different horizons have been determined.6 That electric logs should reflect in some measure such physical properties of rocks as porosity and permeability and, in addition, give rise to data pertaining to the fluid content of rock interstices, becomes evident when the conditions giving rise to the electrical phenomena measured are known. However, it is not the purpose of this paper to review the present status of electric logging; rather, the reader is referred to the papers cited on page 220 for the principles and practice involved. WEIGEL 20] Introduction-Grouting in Mines By definition the word "grout" means a thin mortar, or a kind of plaster or cement, and "grouting" means to fill up or finish with grout. The words "cement," "plaster" and "mortar" mean a substance that is used in a soft state which subsequently hardens. Thus, grouting is the filling of void space with a substance that hardens. Construction cements are the most common substances used, either by themselves or in mixtures, but the term grouting is applied quite correctly when other substances such as plastics and certain chemicals are used. Also, the use of the term grouting to cover the filling of voids with materials that do not actually become hard, such as the flotation tailings used in grouting in the southeast Missouri lead district, should be considered correct, as some stiffening does take place and, anyway, it is a better descriptive term than any substitute. Engineers are interested in grouting because some of the materials with which they must work contain voids, and certain conditions can be improved if these voids can be filled with something solid and permanent. Grouting is done to accomplish several purposes: I. To stop the passage of fluids and gases, 2. To cement materials together to make them stronger, and 3. To prevent consolidation of materials by filling void space with something solid as a replacement for the air and water that could be forced out under load. The construction industry uses grouting extensively for all three purposes. Grouting is used to stop water percolation under and around dams. It is used to control water flow in tunnel driving and in shaft sinking. It is used to improve foundation conditions under civil engineering structures by permanently filling void space and thereby reducing settlement, or by cementing broken rock together and increasing its supporting strength. The oil and gas industry does a lot of grouting, primarily to stop the passage of gases and fluids. The search for oil at increasingly greater depths has meant greater investment per well, and the oil industry has spent large sums on development of improved drilling methods. This

One of the major difficulties in predicting the performance of oil reservoirs from their early pressure history lies in the uncertainty of estimating the volume of the liquid hydrocarbons contained in them. As a first step in filling this need, an equation was developed to determine the Inolal liquid volume of pure hydrocarbons over a wide range of temperature and pressure. The equations expressing the correlation for. mixrurrc were developed from 647 experimental measure-rilents of volume on 47 bouom-hole samples covering ; temperature range of 72" to 250°F and a pressure znge from bubble-point ro 5,000 psig. The average absotute deviation was found to he 1.6 per cent with the maximum for any measurement of 4.9 per cent. INTRODUCTION Accuratc information of the pressure-volume-temper-iiture behavior of hydrocarbon liquids is of considerable importance in the field of both applied and theoretical science and, especially, in the solution of petroleum reservoir engineering problems. These PVT relationships can be expressed graphically, in tabular form or as equations of state. Equations of state for gases have been developed based on the ratio of pressure, temperature and volume to the pressure, temperature and volume at the critical points of the hydrocarbons. These equations have been successful in yielding values fairly accurate for reservoir engineering purposes. For liquids, however, relations of this type are more complex and have not yielded useful results. The composition of reservoir liquids is normally expressed in terms of the moles of hydrocarbons C,? C,. C,. elc, per mole of mixture. The composition must include the fraction of a mixture such as C,,, which cannot be separated with reasonable time and effort into specific hydrocarbons. Although there are several equations of state having variable degrees of accuracy applicable to pure liquid hydrocarbons, none includes a means for estimating the volume of mixtures as a function of temperature. pressure and composition expressed in this manner.

This article summarizes the successful incorporation of a flash-flooding stream into the tailing-disposal system at the St. Joseph Lead Company&apos;s Federal Division mill, in St. Francois County, Missouri. The mill was built in 1906, by the Federal Lead Co., as its No. 3 mill for the concentration of southeastern Missouri lead ores, and damming Davis Creek was first considered in 1908. Plans were made also in 1925 and in 1937. Dam layouts varied from a reinforced concrete structure to a barrier built of tailings alone. .All were abandoned because of liability that would be incurred by flash-flood rupturing of an incompleted dam. By 1942 mill capacity had reached 12,000 tons daily and increasing tailing-disposal costs again focused attention on the Davis Creek basin. This time the problem of riskless dam building was solved. Moreover, most of the items that appeared in the answer were materials that normally required wasting and the major portion of labor involved performed functions that it mould normally have done, without constructive benefit, elsewhere. The new layout also made possible advantageous changes in mill-water supply pumping; static head being reduced from 514 ft to 9; ft, friction head from 4900 ft to 2860 ft, and pumping can be done now at periods of low power demand. The following facts about the Davis Creek watershed explain the 36-year reluctance to reach these, and other, benefits. Size: 3600 acres. Outline: roughly pear-shaped, 21/2 by 3 miles at the largest dimensions. Topography: mostly hill land with steep valleys. Relief: 760 minimum to 1153 maximum. Maximum rainfall: 3.36 in. per hour. Permanent water: none natural. Now 2200 gpm discharged through 16-in. drill hole from mine pumps underground. Geology: the 17 acres near dam centerline is Bonne Terre dolomite covered with sand and gravel eroded from Pleistocene beds that cap some of the hills. The remainder of the pond basin is on Davis shale. Soil cover: mostly second-growth timber with some abandoned fields; all subject to careless burning, which reduces water-retaining ability. Flood history: flash-flooding that had taken at least one life. Downstream values: two railroad bridges before creek intersection with Flat River. Immediately below confluence, a highway bridge, a low-water crossing, a few business establishments and several blocks of residences. In July 1942 the following segments of an ingenious plan were put into operation. A ditch 270 ft long, 16 ft wide and 51/2 ft deep was excavated to bedrock in the gravelly soil along the proposed dam&apos;s centerline. This excavation, which exposed many gravel-filled channels, was run full of slimes drawn from a riser set in the top of an adjacent tailings-disposal

THERE has been little investigation of the gold-germanium binary alloys. Haughton1 does not mention any work on the system. In a review article commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of germanium, E. Einecke2 mentioned a gold germanium eutectic at 24 atomic per cent Ge (10.4 weight per cent) melting at 359°C., but did not give the source of his information. From measurements of electrical conductivity, J. 0. Linde3 estimated that at least o.6 weight per cent germanium is soluble in gold. The recent availability of germanium in this country in commercial quantities has led to interest in its properties and its alloys. This study is part of a program of investigation on germanium alloys; work on ternary alloys involving germanium and gold will be reported later. In this investigation, the composition and melting point of the Au-Ge eutectic reported by Einecke has been found to be substantially correct. Eutectic composition has been placed at 12,0 per cent germanium, however. An alloy of 10.4 per cent Ge, Einecke&apos;s value, was found to have a few gold dendrites in it. The eutectic temperature has been determined as 356.0 ± 0.5°C., slightly less than the temperature of 359°C reported by Einecke. The liquidus curves and the solid solubility of germanium in gold have been determined, and are shown in Fig. I. MATERIALS AND ALLOYING The germanium used in this investigation was prepared by the Eagle-Picher Lead Co. from pure germanium oxide, by reduction in clay crucibles with sodium cyanide. The regulus is quite pure, assaying over 99.9 per cent Ge. High-purity gold obtained from Handy and Harmon was used. Alloying was carried out in graphite crucibles in an atmosphere of purified hydrogen. The temperature was brought up to 1050° to 1100°C., and the metal was allowed to freeze in the crucible. Prepared in this way, the gold dendrites in hypoeutectic alloys were somewhat segregated at the bottom and sides of the ingot, and on the hypereutectic side the lighter primary germanium tended to gather at the top. Most of the alloys were made from virgin metal. Low-germanium heats were made by alloying pure gold with the eutectic. Melting losses were consistently a few milligrams or less, and the composition could safely be taken from the intended analysis. The 30 per cent and 50 per cent germanium heats for thermal analysis were made in part from remelted higher germanium heats, and they may be off composition as much as one per cent. Because of the high cost of materials, the weight of heats for thermal analysis were 15 to 20 grams and heats for metallographic, X-ray, and hardness specimens were 2 to 4 grams.

The process of comminution by grinding is properly classified as an art, rather than as a science. Like most other operations concerned in ore dressing, or in the treatment of nonmetallic minerals, the mathematical relationships of rock breaking are still obscure, and much disputed. If some basic formula exists, comparable for instance to E = RI in electricity, it has not yet been placed in common use. The absence of such a comprehensive mathematical background undoubtedly is the cause of many inefficient designs and installations, as well as of much poorly oriented experimental work. On the other hand, the mathematical immaturity of the process constitutes an opportunity for a real contribution on the part of those who enjoy mental pioneering. Some of the statements made in any such exploratory work may be little more than opinions, and it is to be expected that some will later be proved untrue; but such an evolutionary development is necessary if we are ever to arrive at the fundamental laws, the discovery of which can change the empirical art into a mathematically exact science. The most significant principle of comminution that we possess is probably Rittinger&apos;s law, which states that the work done in crushing or grinding is proportional to the area of the new surface produced. There is an alternative theory, known as Kick&apos;s law, which formerly was preferred to Rittinger&apos;s but which now is rather discredited. According to Kick, the work done in comminution is proportional to the volume, or weight, of the pieces broken, or to the cube of their diameters, while according to Rittinger it is proportional to the square of the diameters. Careful determinations of size distribution below the limit of sieve sizes1 indicate strongly that under ordinary grinding conditions the amount of new surface area produced is directly proportional to the net power input. Changes in the size ratio between the balls and the particles cause important differences in the proportion of the product that passes a given mesh size, but do not affect the total amount of new surface area; they merely change the distribution of the surface among mesh sizes. The principle of constant surface area is the logical result of Rittinger&apos;s law, and it may well have an important bearing on the comminution theories of the future. Formula for Ball Wear Grinding tests have been made in the Allis-Chalmers laboratory for more than 9 years, using a standard charge of mixed balls of different sizes; and a continuous record has been kept of the rates of wear of each size. These results have been combined and plotted in various ways in order to discover the relationship that exists

Preferred orientation, particularly in irons and low-carbon steel, is a phenomenon that is both of considerable importance and theoretical interest. At times it is a liability and at other times an asset. In deep-drawing operations, preferred orientation is extremely undesirable because it necessitates trimming operations and increases scrap loss. Furthermore, oriented metals are likely to crack more easily than randomly oriented material because the forming of symmetrical and unsymmetrical shapes out of preferentially oriented metals and alloys increases the probability of rupture in regions of high stress, owing to differential ductility.&apos; In the electrical industry, on the other hand, preferentially oriented silicon irons are in demand for transformer application because of the improved magnetic permeabilities in the rolling direction.2 This phenomenon of preferred orientation in soft magnetic materials has been responsible for the tremendous improvement in transformer design and construction in recent years. Directional properties in metals have received a great deal of attention in the metallurnical -literature,3-9 in which much of the information reported about orientation has been obtained by conventional methods, mechanicai properties and X-rays. A wealth of data has been obtained and often at a great expenditure of time. The recent introduction of the magnetic torque measurements on ferromagnetic materials provides a very simple and rapid method of evaluating orientation. The judicious use of the method can supply important information, but it should be borne in mind that such studies must be supplemented by X-rays, optical methods,10 and etch and pressure figures" to get a rational understanding of the orientation phenomena. No claims are made that the magnetic torque of evaluating orientation will reveal the behavior of the metal in deep drawing. For this purpose the accepted tests for deep-drawing quality must be used. For a good drawing stock, which must have low impurities, desirable grain size, ductility, strength, hardness, good surface, random orientation, and good recrystallization behavior, it cannot be expected that any simple test will be satisfactory for appraising all the factors. The only factor on which the magnetic method can be used is orientation, which is, of course, of considerable importance. When directionality can cause a 10 to 15 per cent change in tensile strength and a IOO to 300 per cent change in tear length,12 it goes without saying that a reliable as well as rapid method for detecting these changes would be desirable. There are certain inherent advantages in testing orientation by the torque method: The method is rapid with the proper type of equipment; no elaborate preparation of specimens is required—it is only necessary to punch or machine a I-in. disk of the sheet material and insert it into the testing device.

The heat of solution at infinite dilution of selenium in bismuth, the heat of mixing of selenium and bismuth, and the limit of solubility of selenium in bis~rzuth have been determined at 573, 623; and 663°K by metal solution calorimetry. The heat of forrrzation of the compound Bi2Se at these temperatures has been determined from the heat effects associated with the precipitation of the compound from a saturated solution oj selenium and bismuth. The published information on the thermodynamic properties of the system Bi-Se is limited. The heat of solution at infinite dilution of selenium in bismuth at 623°K has been measured.&apos; The heat of formation at 273 K1 and room temperature2 and the heat capacity at 80 K3 of the compound Bi2Se3 have been reported. An estimate of the heat of formation of the compound BiSe at room temperature has been published.2 Information on the phase relations in the system Bi-Se is available.&apos; In the investigation reported here the following quantities have been determined at 573", 623", and 663°K: 1) the heat of solution at infinite dilution of selenium in bismuth, 2) the heat of mixing of selenium and bismuth in bismuth-rich solutions, 3) the limit of solubility of selenium in bismuth, and 4) the heat of formation of the compound BizSe. These quantities were determined by the addition of selenium to bismuth-rich solutions in a metal solution calorimeter. The determination of the heat of formation at the tem- perature of the calorimeter bath involved the precipitation of the compound from a saturated solution in the calorimeter. 5,6 This method differs from that commonly used which requires the addition of the compound and of a mechanical mixture of its components and yields the heat of formation at the temperature from which the additions are made (273 K EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND CALCULATIONS The solution calorimeter has been described in detail.&apos; Pure bismuth (99.999+ pct) was used as the bath at the start of a run. The calorimeter was calibrated with small amounts of bismuth added from 273°K; the differences of the heat contents of bismuth at 273°K and the temperatures of the baths are listed in Table I. After the calibration, additions of hexagonal selenium (99.999+ pct) were made. Loss of selenium by evaporation was negligible. No unusual experimental difficulties were encountered.9 The differences in the heat contents10 of selenium at 273°K and the temperature of the bath, listed in Table I, were subtracted from the measured heat effects to give the "adjusted heat effects". The year 1941 in the California oil industry was marked by an increased market demand, drilling activity, and production of crude oil. Although seven new oil fields and two gas fields were discovered during the year, additions to reserves from these discoveries, as well as extensions and revaluations of previous discoveries, were approximately 100 million barrels, as against estimated withdrawals of 230,233,000 barrels. The year was remarkable for the very great increase in domestic demand for all products, which more than compensated for the loss in shipments to Japan, which averaged 60,041 bbl. Per day during 1940. Demand in terms of crude during 1941 was 648,967 bbl. per day as against 632,647 for the same period in 1940. This abnormal increase in demand is due to increased industrial activity, and especially increased railroad activity. Gasoline consumption for 1941 was 241,011 bbl. per day as against 217,744 in 1940. Demand for fuel oil increased from 259,806 bbl. per day in 1940 to 285,896 in 1941, and caused a withdrawal from stocks of more than 7,473,000 barrels. During 1941, total oil storage declined 9,153,000 bbl., but additions to storage of 1,754,000 bbl. of light oil and light oil products were offset by a withdrawal of 10,907,000 bbl. of heavier products. Production during the year is estimated at 230,233,000 bbl. as against 222,784,386 bbl. for 1940. TraNsportation For a short time, California was affected by lack of transportation due to the diversion of tankers. This shortage affected the movement of oil from the Sari Joaquin mated to the refineries, since a large percentage of this production is moved to the coast through pipe lines, and thence by tankers to Los Angeles and San Fran-,iSco, Return of the tanker fleet, which may be temporary, indicates that there is a possibility of ample supplies of petroleum products in the Pacific Northwest. Drilling Activity Contrary to general opinion, drilling activity increased in 1941 over the pre-vious Year, 942 wells being completed in 1941 as against 890 in 1940, an increase Of 6 per cent. This increase was due to the increased demands for fuel oil, and also to the decreased drilling costs, which made many former marginal locations economic. The main activity caused by increased demands for fuel oil was in the Mt. Poso, McKittrick, Midway and Santa Maria Valley oil fields. Dry-hole footage in 1941 was 655,354 ft. as against 583,537 ft. for 1940.
