R. S. Handy (Santa Rosa, Calif.)—It would be interesting to learn the comparative results of treating the Korean scheelite ore described in this paper according to the following procedure: I—Follow the procedure described in the paper to the recovery of the sulphides by flotation. 2—Dilute the residue from the sulphide flotation strongly with water and disperse the contained colloids by adding a mixture of 75 pct sodium silicate and 25 pct quebracho to dispersion point. 3— Settle the dispersed pulp and decant the supernatant colloids. 4—-Dilute, settle, and decant the pulp until the settled residue is crystalline. Not over 10 pct of the tungsten minerals should follow the colloids. 5—Treat the settled residue by flotation, having established the proper pH. Oleic acid homogenized with cresylic acid or kerosene is more selective for scheelite than is oleic acid alone. (The recovery of the contained tungsten minerals should be practically complete in this operation.) 6—Deflocculate the tungsten concentrate from step 5 with the same dispersion agents as in step 2 and treat the deflocculated pulp by gravity. The minerals that tend to float with scheelite are generally of low specific gravity and the separation is efficient. The heavier contaminants, such as pyrrhotite and magnetite can be removed magnetically, leaving a practically pure scheelite. E. J. Pryor (Imperial College of Science and Technology, London)—It occurred to me that instead of using temperature as a differentiating control, more precision might be obtained with a reagent of a type we developed here for the flotation of high grade fluorspar in cold pulps. This reagent, which is manufactured on a modest scale in England, is based on oleic acid, which has been modified by our patented process to ensure complete stable dispersion at any desired concentration in water. It thus becomes possible to utilise unimolecular layers with good selectivity. In the fluorspar flotation for which we developed it, it is possible to hold a tight control on depressing quebracho for the calcite without substantial loss of flu-orite, and recovery exceeding 99 pct is not uncommon in the mill where it is in use, even under wintry conditions. IN my address on the " Geognostical Relations of the Metals," delivered before the Institute on the 20th of February last (Vol. I Transactions, p. 331), I spoke of the rocks in the vicinity of Thunder Bay, Lake Superior, where I indicated two series of uncrystalline rocks resting upon the Huronian schists, the lower one consisting of dark-colored argillites and sandstones overlaid, apparently in slight discordance, by nearly horizontal red and white sandstone and marls, which were compared with those of Sault Ste. Marie, and those of the Portage Lake district, on the south shore. These latter sand-stones, according to Brooks and Pumpelly, overlie unconformably the Keweenaw series of copper-bearing amygdaloids, sandstones, and conglomerates, and are in turn overlaid by the Trenton limestone. I then proposed to call this lower series of Thunder Bay, that is to say, the dark-colored argillites and sandstones which are traversed by the silver-bearing lodes of that region, the Animikie group. Shortly after the publication of that address I received an abstract of a paper on the geology of that region by Professor Robert Bell, read before the Montreal Natural History Society, February 24th. He there confirms the statement made in my address that the gold of Lake Shebandowan occurs in the Huronian, which is also seen to be cut by the silver-bearing lodes just mentioned. Professor Bell, in this paper, proposes to designate both what I have called the Animikie group, and the overlying red and white sandstones, by the name of the Nepigon group, for the reason that the upper series is best displayed about Lake Nepigon. This latter series is by Logan supposed to be overlaid by the copper-bearing amygdaloids with conglomerates and sandstones of the north shore (apparently identical with those of Keweenaw) ; and the whole together, including the Animikie group, constitute his Upper Copper-bearing group. These copper-bearing strata are by him supposed to be overlaid by the red and white sandstones of St. Mary, which are apparently the same with those sandstones which, according to Brooks and Pumpelly, overlie unconformably the similar cupriferous rocks of Portage Lake, and are, in their turn, overlaid by the Trenton limestone. IT is not the object of the present paper to give a description of the minerals found on Mine Hill, in Sussex County, N. J., nor even to touch upon all the forms of the ores named, but to place upon record and call to the attention of the Institute some interesting facts concerning them. In May, 1875, after the Dover meeting, some of the members visited this locality, and, no doubt, it is fresh in their memories, being one of the best known mineralogical points in our country. It will be only necessary to describe it very briefly. Mine Hill and Stirling Hill, in Sussex County, N. J., the former being at the village of Franklin Furnace, and the latter near Ogdensburg,-are the only localities in the State where zinc ores are found in workable quantities.* Mine Hill is the more northerly, and mineralogically differs from its neighbor, chiefly in having no hydrated ores to speak of, while at Stirling this deposit is considerable. At both points Franklinite, red oxide, and silicate of zinc occur in large quantities. Mine Hill lies on the east side of the Wallkill River, above which it rises to an extreme elevation of about 150 feet. On the summit the outcrop of the Franklinite vein appears, while the lowest worked points are perhaps 10 or 15 feet above the level of the stream. Corn¬mencing at the northern end, where the Hamburg Road crosses it, this outcrop runs along the northwestern brow of the hill a distance of about 2000 feet, in a general southwest direction, to a point where is a large, cavern-like opening, called the "Southwest Opening." " Double Rock," about the highest point on the hill, lies near the middle of this 2000 feet of outcrop, and over or near it passes a property line, to which allusion will hereafter be made. At the Southwest Opening the vein bends abruptly towards the east,-the angle between the two parts being perhaps 45°,-and this easterly branch continues some 700 feet. From the northern part of the Stirling Hill deposit to the southern part of the Mine Hill deposit is about two miles, and in this interval the vein carrying Franklinite * See New Jersey State Geology, 1868, p. 669.

WheN attempting to lift mill pulp containing a considerable percentage of wolframite, in an ordinary bucket elevator, difficulty was encountered from the tendency of the tungsten minerals to settle, on account of their high specific gravity. Lifts not exceeding 20 ft. (6 m.) could be accomplished without particular difficulty, because there was insufficient time for consolidation of the heavy minerals in the bottom of the bucket; but with higher lifts, the heavy tungsten minerals would settle so solidly that when the bucket turned over at the top of the elevator the contents could be only partially dumped. In this case it was necessary to lift the material a distance of 34 ft. (10m.); hence some means had to be adopted to prevent settling, at least to such an extent that the material could be dumped from the buckets. To reduce the carrying time to a sufficient extent would have required a belt speed of 475 ft. (144.7 m.) per minute, which was not feasible. It was decided to try, by vibrating the belt about midway of its span, to keep the material sufficiently agitated during elevation to prevent settling. Underneath the rising side of the belt was placed a 12-in. (30.48-cm.) idler pulley, 18 ft. (5.5 m.) up in the total lift of 34 ft. The idler pulley was set eccentric by % in. (19 mm.) and it was hoped that the vibration thus imparted to the belt, running at a speed of 280 ft. (85 m.) per minute, would prevent settling in the buckets. It was found that the pressure of the belt on the idler, due to the small inclination of the elevator, was not sufficient to overcome sliding on the idler, and the agitation was insufficient to accomplish the desired purpose. The idler was then connected to the drive shaft of the elevator through an intermediate pulley, gearing down to a speed of 20 r.p.m., so that a positive vibration was imparted to the belt; this imparted enough motion to the belt to prevent settling and the contents of buckets dumped satisfactorily. (written-discussion-? ).--The advantages of the incline-slicing system have' been ably pointed out by Mr. Scott in his paper in the November, 1917, Bulletin, and also by Mr. P. B. Scotland in the Engineering & Mining Journal, Apr. 7, 1917. From the standpoint of efficiency and economy this method is far superior to the top-slice system as generally practised. However, as regards ventilation, and the danger of mine fires, it is just as necessary to use a mechanical ventilating system in mines worked by this method as it is in those worked by the horizontal top-slice system. Mechanical ventilation not only improves working conditions in top-slice stopes but, if properly designed for the particular mine in question, permits an immediate attack to he made in the event of a mine fire with a greater degree of safety to the men. In the course of time, incline top-slicing will probably take the place of the horizontal top-slicing system just as the incline cut-and-fill has superseded the horizontal cut-and-fill stoping method. While incline top-slicing has been tried in several districts on a very limited scale with inconclusive results, the Coronado is the-only large mine at which it has yet been thoroughly tested, and there it proved to be a complete success. As Mr. Scott's figures show, the tonnage has been more than doubled, with a simultaneous reduction in costs. As has been the history with all other innovations in mining, considerable hesitation will probably be shown in introducing this method in other mines. For example, when the incline cut-and-fill system was put forward as a substitute for the horizontal cut-and-fill stoping method many mining men of good repute were doubtful of its success and post-poned its introduction as long as possible, giving as their reason certain geologic conditions which would make the incline cut-and-fill impracticable. At the present time, most of the mining companies in the South-west, who in the past had used the horizontal cut-and-fill system, have already changed over, or are in the process of changing, and have proved that in the majority of cases horizontal cut-and-fill stopes can be successfully operated under the incline cut-and-fill system. Large horizontal cut-and-fill stopes can now be found in only a few exceptional cases, and

With the exception of exploration geological work that is being prosecuted in various parts of the mainland of Arabia, the only new developments in Arabia during 1934 were on Bahrein Island, which is in the southwestern portion of the Persian Gulf, approximately 25 miles from the mainland of Arabia. Here the Standard Oil Co. of California, through its wholly owned subsidiary, The Bahrein Petroleum Co., Limited, has continued to carry on a systematic drilling campaign and has constructed camps, pipe line and marine loading facilities. During 1934 eight wells have been completed at depths ranging from 2058 to 2253 ft. These wells have shown average initial productions ranging from 1500 to 5000 bbl., with one, No. 15, estimated as being capable of flowing as much as 11,000 bbl. per day. The oil is asphaltic in character and has a gravity range of from 32' to 34' A.P.I. The locating of all new wells has followed a plan of orderly development, with the ultimate object of obtaining efficiency of operation and maximum production. The wells are taking a penetration of 200 to 250 ft. of the lower or so-called Main productive zone. The upper oil zone, which is cased off, includes 300 to 400 ft. of alternating limestones, clays and shales and carries a heavier oil under lower pressures. The Main zone is similar lithologically to the upper zone. Micro-fauna collected from cores have shown that the oil occurs in formations of lower Eocene and Cretaceous age. Development to date has not progressed sufficiently so that either the maximum thickness of the oil-bearing horizons or the limits of the field can be determined. Something over 10,000 acres has been proven to date. Among other developments leading toward the marketing of oil from Bahrein during 1934 was the construction of a marine loading terminal. This included the laying of over 3 miles of 12-in. submarine pipe line from the small island of Sitra out into the harbor, terminating in 50 ft. of water; also the laying of more than 10 miles of gathering lines from the producing area to the terminal. Three crude oil working tanks with floating roofs were erected on Sitra Island, having a capacity of 250,000 bbl. A pumping plant was provided having a capacity of 5700 bbl. of oil per hour. The following have been compiled from information furnished through the courtesy of Dr. W. P. Haynes, of London, and Mr. T. V. Grigorescu of Ploesti, Rumania. Gura Ocnitzei was the most active field during the year, furnishing 40 per cent of the production and 50 per cent of the drilling activity. Extensions to the west in this field were made both by Concordia and Romana Americana. In these new extensions the bulk of the production comes from the Drader member of the Dacian, with an average depth of 1300 m.; the underlying third Meotic at 1700 m. has not been developed yet. In Gura Ocnitzei east no new drilling has been done in 1933, but here declining pressures have led to the extensive use of gas-lift and pumps. Ochiuri saw some small drilling activity, but production declined. Two good wells were brought in by Unirea and Astra at the close of the year. Boldesti continued to be developed on a general plan by the four major companies interested. Production was from the Meotic, which in this dome has been penetrated for 356 m. Reserves have been estimated at about 63,000,000 bbl. An important discovery in this area was the bringing in of Credit Minier No. 1 Harsa to the east of the main field and producing from the Meotic. This well came in during October, 1932, and is now making 1400 barrels. In the Moreni Piscuri field only routine operations have been carried on. The prolific sands are now declining rapidly. Ceptura also saw only routine operations. In the Arcesti field development of the Meotic continues. Seven new wells were brought in during the year and ten were drilling at the close of 1930. The field produced over a million barrels for the first time during 1933. In the other fields only routine operations were carried on. A considerable increase in efficiency of operations was noted during the year. The average drilling time has been reduced, coring programs have been amplified, and much care has been taken in straight hole drilling. The Schlumberger electrical coring apparatus is extensively used. Electric-driven rotaries have been introduced at Gura Ocnitzei. The Moniteur du Pétrole Rouman reports that the index cost of drilling one meter, taking 1929 as a base of 100, has been reduced to 32 in 1933.

The figures listed in a table for Gulf Coast fields given by L. P. Teas1 in 1934 are so greatly at variance with results that I have obtained from a serious study of this subject over a number of years, that I am disposed to challenge the correctness of Mr. Teas' figures as an accurate representation of acre-foot yields of Gulf Coast fields, and as regards at least two of the fields listed by Mr. Teas I desire to "put into the record" some figures that, according to my study, are more nearly in accord with what I conceive to be the actual facts. Upon investigation I find that Mr. Teas' figures, inadvertently no doubt, arc not what they purport to be. Apparently the figures were arrived at by considering as thickness of the producing formation the net thickness of producing rock corresponding "to the total of the net portions of the producing zones which actually yield oil into the drill hole"—and in following this method I am under the impression that Mr. Teas was acting under instructions of the Institute in the preparation of this paper, in order to get comparable figures from the several fields of the United States. Apparently the author interpreted these instructions to mean that in the absence of cored thicknesses of producing horizons the actual number of feet of screen set in the various producing zones was to be taken as the basis for arriving at the thickness of these zones and the "acre-foot" yields. It is obvious that in many instances only 20 ft. of screen, or even 10 ft. of screen, might be set in a well, when there might be actually 100 ft. of oil sand present. In the early operations in the Gulf Coast it was usual to set much less screen than the amount of sand. It follows that the "acre-foot yields" so arrived at would be much greater than those found by using the full amount of sand. In Mr. Teas' table, it was indicated that up to the end of 1933 "acre-foot" yields had been obtained in the several fields as listed in Table 1. A casual inspection of these yields will show that certainly they do not properly reflect the amount of oil produced from an acre-foot of the

At the meeting of the Institute in Easton, October, 1873,I made a communication on the Ore Knob copper mine, in Ashe County, North Carolina (Transactions, vol. ii, p. 123), in which I called attention to the chemical decomposition alike of the pyritous lode and the inclosing gneiss rock to a depth of 60 feet, by which the feldspar of the latter had been converted into clay, and the whole rock very much softened. Such a decomposition is well known to be almost universal in the crystalline rocks of the Appalachians south of the Potomac; and if it is only seen in rare and exceptional cases farther to the northward, this, as I have elsewhere pointed out, is due to the fact that the decomposition began and ended in the ages anterior to the drift period, and that the decayed portions which still remained were at that time removed from the surface, except in some localities which were protected from the emding agency. I have lately had an opportunity of studying a remarkable instance of this kind in an examination made last month for the corporators of the Hoosac Tunnel.* The locality is at the western base of Hoosac Mountain, the western slope of which rises rapidly 1300 feet above the town of North Adams, in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, itself 700 feet above the sea level. Through this mountain, as is well known, a tunnel for the Troy and Boston Railroad has lately been opened, a distance of 25,081 feet from east to west. The rock of the mountain consists of mica schist and micaceous gneiss, including in its western half a great mass of harder feldspathic and quartzose strata in part a granitoid gneiss, the strata for the most part dipping to the eastward with variable angles, but with occasional western dips, apparently due to inversion. The crystalline strata of the mountain crest and sides are in many places exposed, and present rounded surfaces, often deeply grooved and striated, but with no appearance of decay. At the western base of the mountain, however, the gneissic rock is in a state of complete decomposition, which was well displayed in opening the tunnel, which, for a distance of several hundred feet, was driven through highly inclined strata so much decomposed that they were excavated with pick and shovel, and without the aid of blast-

One of the very simplest losses to overcome, and at small expense, is belt slip. To show the extent of the loss of money through slipping of the main belt alone, a chart, supplied us through the courtesy of the Cling-Surface Co., Buffalo, N. Y., is shown herewith, upon which this is easily ascertained. By glancing up and down column "D" of this chart it is evident that the "Cost of Avoidable Belt Slip per Year in Dollars" may vary all the way from the smallest sums into the thousands of dollars. Roughly, 2 per cent. of the potential power in the driving pulley of the engine is represented by "belt creep." Its loss is unavoidable because of the elasticity of the belt. This has been recognized and provided for in the chart, so the reader can go ahead and connect known values, while the intersection with column "D" gives the avoidable money loss. Simply zig-zag across the chart twice with a straight edge, as shown by the dotted lines and the money loss is immediately found. Thus if the total belt slip is 6 per cent. (column A) and the cost of coal per ton is $4 (column B), run a straight line through those two points and locate the intersection with column "C." Then from that point of intersection run over to the tons of coal burned per year (which in this instance has been stated as 1000 tons) and the cost of avoidable belt slip per year is shown by column "D" as being $160. To give a clear idea as to the meaning of "Total Belt Slip Per Cent." let us take an example. You find by means of a revolution counter that a given driven pulley is rotating only 940 times per minute. You figure that without slip it should rotate 1000 times per minute; 60 revolutions per minute, therefore, are absolutely lost. Dividing this 60 by the r.p.m. that pulley should make you get 0.060 or 6 per cent. which is the "Total Belt Slip." After having made this determination, it is a simple matter to apply it to the chart as has been done and determine the money loss per year due to such slip.

THE Agua Fria mine is in eastern Honduras at Lat. 140° 06' N., Long. 86° 36’ W. Danli, the seat of the local municipal government, is the nearest town. The property is approximately 44 miles east of Tegucigalpa, the terminus of a truck road from the Pacific coast. The mine lies at an altitude of 3300 ft. with surrounding elevations as high as 6000 feet. For 20 years the oxidized croppings of the Agua Fria vein had been worked intermittently when in 1927 an attempt was made to open the property. A shaft was sunk 300 ft. and considerable ore was blocked out, but before a mill could be installed financial difficulties arose and the mine reverted to the original owners. Erle P. Halliburton, of Los Angeles, purchased the property in 1934. At that time a careful consideration of all factors involved showed that air transport was the only practical method of moving the equipment and machinery necessary to commence production. The other alternative was by muleback, which required sectionalizing all equipment to a maximum load of 200 lb., and during the rainy season this type of freighting was subject to serious delays. It was decided to purchase a trimotor Ford powered by three Pratt and Whitney Wasp B motors developing 400 hp. each. There were several reasons for the choice: (1) this type of plane was available at a reasonable price, owing to its replacement by faster models on most of the airlines in the United States; (2) the ship was capable of carrying a pay load of 3000 lb. over the required distance; (3) since this airplane had been widely used there would be no difficulty in securing competent personnel or in purchasing spare parts. It was necessary to rebuild the plane for cargo service. The windows were removed and the fuselage was entirely covered. A hatch was cut in the top of the fuselage to receive heavy crane loads and pieces of freight that were too large or too long to go through the rear door. The seats were removed and the interior of the plane was lined with Duralumin sheets. A heavy-duty landing gear was installed and the floor was reinforced. The nearest site for an airport was two miles north of the mine. The necessary grading was done by a small track-type tractor with a wheeled grader, which was brought in overland. THE direct injection of cement grout into water-bearing fissures as a means of checking or stopping the flow of water into shafts and tunnels has been experimented with for a decade or longer and seems to have been first attempted in Europe. The earliest application of which the writer has found a record was at a shaft sunk by the Mining Society of Lens; this is described by C. Dinoire in the Transactions of the Institution of Mining Engineers.1. It is only lately, however, that the process has been entirely successful. This success has been accomplished on the Catskill Aqueduct, now under construction by the city of New York. This aqueduct includes a number of deep pressure tunnels, reached by shafts for both waterway and construction purposes. In portions of these shafts and tunnels considerable underground water was met. The contract for the first of these deep pressure tunnels was let to the T. A. Gillespie Co.; this section is known as the Rondout Siphon. It leads under the Rondout valley at a depth of from 400 to 800 ft. and is about 5 miles long. The engineers expected that considerable water would be encountered, but fortunately this was not the case except at one shaft, known as No. 4, which penetrated the rock at a junction between limestone and conglomerate. Water-bearing fissures were encountered almost immediately. At a depth of about 200 ft. a flow of 1,500 gal. per minute was struck. The shaft then contained as many pumps as could be used, and it seemed impossible to sink it further. After vain efforts had been made to proceed, John P. Hogan, a division engineer of the Board of Water Supply, suggested that cementation of the fissures be tried. The process was attempted for the first time in this country. Since the shaft was partly full of water it was necessary to drill grout holes with a diamond drill. Platforms were placed on the timbers at the water level, the diamond drill was installed and six 90-ft. holes were drilled in the bottom of the shaft. Several car loads of cement were pumped through these holes into the fissures, the drill casings being used for grout pipes. Cold working of iron-carbon alloys was found to increase greatly the hydrogen solubility and to decrease the diffusivity at temperatures up to 400° C. These effects are increasing functions of both the carbon content and the degree of deformation. The hydrogen behavior is consistent with the idea that cotd working creates "traps", which are concluded to be microcracks in which the hydrogen is chemisorbed. Hydrogen embrittlement is explained by the Petch theory of metal crack surface energy loss due to hydrogen adsorption. HYDROGEN embrittlement of steel has been studied for many years and has been the subject of an extensive literature, but the mechanism of the effect has not been completely understood. The embrittlement is unusual in that the ductility loss is not accompanied by an increase of the yield strength, being primarily a decrease of the fracture strength alone. The loss of fracture strength is usually most severe in the temperature range between 0°and 100°C. Here the solubility of hydrogen in the iron lattice at ordinary H2 pressures is extremely low while the diffusivity is still quite high. From the relationships between the ductility and the hydrogen content, test temperature and strain rate, it is apparent that the hydrogen atoms causing the ductility loss difbse to and concentrate in small regions of the metal which are especially susceptible to the initiation and propagation of fracture. This hydrogen segregation apparently occurs after plastic straining has begun. Below 0°C the ductility loss persists only at low strain rates in confirmation of the view that the embrittlement is diffusion .controlled. The tendency of the embrittlement to disappear above 100°C can be explained by the increasing lattice solubility of hydrogen with rising temperature. A common view of hydrogen embrittlement of steel is that the hydrogen initially dissolved in the metal lattice diffuses to structural discontinuities and there precipitates as H2 gas at very high pressures which assist the external stress in causing premature failure.1,2 The idea of a high H2 pressure in equilibrium with ordinary amounts of hydrogen in steel at room temperature is due to observations of hydrogen behavior in fully annealed material, for which the Sieverts' law constant relating solute concentration to H2 pressure is extremely small. Hydrogen-embrittled steel, however, is always plastically deformed to some extent, and therefore it is important that hydrogen embrittlement be explained primarily in terms of hydrogen behavior in plastically deformed material. Such an explanation is attempted in this paper. Previous studies of hydrogen in cold-worked steel have shown that both the solubility and the diffusion rate are significantly chaned when the steel is cold worked. Darken and Smith discovered that the amount of hydrogen absorbed from acid by cold-rolled steel at 35°C is many times greater than that absorbed by hot-rolled steel. They found also that the hydrogen permeability of the steel is unaffected by cold working. Keeler and Davis4 confirmed the high apparent solubility of hydrogen in cold-worked iron-carbon alloys at temperatures up to and even beyond the recrystallization temperature. They also found that this solubility increase accompanying cold work is a sensitive function of the carbon content, being absent when no carbon is present. The present experimental study was undertaken primarily to obtain an improved understanding of the behavior of hydrogen in cold-worked steel. Data were obtained on the effects of temperature, H, pressure, carbon content, and degree of cold work on the hydrogen solubility and diffusivity in iron-carbon alloys. These data have been helpful in elucidating the nature of the cold-worked steel structure as well as in providing information on the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement of steel. EXPERIMENTAL Cylindrical specimens for hydrogen absorption and diffusion rate measurements were prepared from three iron-carbon binary alloys and a commercial SAE 1010 steel. The iron-carbon alloys were prepared by vacuum melting electrolytic iron with graphite in a magnesia crucible. The alloys were cast in vacuum as 2 1/2-in. sq ingots weighing about 20 lb each. The ingots were hot rolled (above 1900°F) to 5/8-in.-diam round bars and then cooled in air to room temperature. The resulting metallographic structure consisted of islands of fine pearlite surrounded by free ferrite. Chemical analyses of the materials are given in Table I. The 5/8-in. diam bars were turned to diameters such that cold reduction to the desired final specimen diameters would result in either 30 or 60 pct reduction in area (RA). The temperature, strain rate, and orientation deDendence of defbrnzation of single-crystal MgAg has been examined. The crystals exhibit a tendency to single glide and little or no hardening at 25°C for many orientations. A much higher hardening rate is observed when multiple glide occurs, such as can be initiated by surface defects. The tendency for easy glide becomes less dependent on surface preparation and orientation as T — 100°C and bars so tested often fail after one-dimensional necking-. At T > 200°C (transition temperature for single-crystal notch sensitivity and poly crystalline ductility) single glide diminishes and two-dirnensionul necking begins. The crystals do not strictly obey a critical resolved shear stress law, but show the influence of {loo) cracks in determining the slip mode. The results are correlated with the difficulty of sciperdzslocation intersection and semibrittle behavior of this compound in single-crystal and poly crystalline form. Comparisons are made with the slip selection mode observed in tungsten, with the reported observations of easy glide in bee metals. and with the mechanical behavior of poly crystalline MgAg. PREVIOUS work on tensile deformation of polycrys-talline MgAgl and bending deformation of single-crystal MgAg2 has shown that the compound is semi-brittle (i.e., notch and grain boundary brittle). If this semibrittleness is supposed to result from the difficulty of multiple glide (associated with the problems of superdislocation intersection) one might expect single crystals deformed in tension to show pronounced single glide and strong orientation dependence of hardening rate. These experiments were done to examine this supposition and to study the tensile deformation of a highly ordered system which may be considered bcc if the difference between the two kinds of atoms is ignored (actual structure: CsC1). EXPERIMENTAL Single-crystal ingots were grown by directional freezing as previously described.' These ingots were sliced into a by a by 2 in, rectangular bars by electric discharge machining, then round tensile bars were conventionally machined to 1/8-in.-diam by 1-in.-long reduced section. The bars were typically tested without an anneal because of the problem of magnesium vapor loss and they were typically tested as mechanically polished. The analyses are within the same limits as those reported earlier; i.e., the average composition for each specimen is within 0.5 at. pct of stoichiometry, while the total range from end to end in a given specimen varies from 0.7 to 1.4 at, pct. There has been no indication in the results of any variation in slip or fracture mode attributable to the composition fluctuations. The slip systems were determined by two-surface analysis of the bars after testing to failure at room temperature. Single glide was so dominant that there was little difficulty in identification of the dominant slip system even though the tensile elongation to failure often approached 7 to 8 pct in room-tempera- ture tests. Elevated-temperature testing was done in a silicone oil bath and low-temperature testing was done in liquid Np or a dry-ice bath. All stress measurements are reported as engineering stress unless otherwise specified, and crosshead travel is used as the strain measurement. RESULTS The tendency toward single glide is best seen in the pictures, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, which depict deformation at fracture as a function of test temperature. While it is possible to find regions of secondary slip by careful microscopy, such regions are very small. The development of a ribbon-shaped configuration from an initially round section bar pulled at 100°C is typical, occurred by single glide, and illustrates the degree to which such glide continues. At temperatures =100°C the bars typically show elongation of 20 to 50 pct by predominently single glide. Despite the large elongation, fracture even at 150°C occurs in a brittle mode, Fig. 2, in the sense that it is an abrupt failure which shows no discernible necking in the second dimension of the bar's cross section (i.e., there is no appreciable action of any slip modes which would decrease the broad dimension of the cross section). Near 200°C the fracture mode changes slightly. Although most of the sample extension is by single glide, after the bar develops the characteristic ribbon shape it begins to neck in the second (i.e., broad) cross-sectional dimension. The rates of oxidation of tungsten have been determined at temperatures between 1320" and 3170°C and oxygen pressures to 1 amn using a surface -recession measurement technique. Above approximately 2000°C and 10-6 atm the rate is independent of temperature and can be calculated from gas collision theory assuming a constant reaction probability, e, of 0.06. Oxygen molecules react at surface sites where oxygen atoms have previously chemisorbed. This provides a direct pressure dependence at low pressures but at high pressures tungsten oxide molecule s form an adjacent gas boundary layer which lowers the PO2 at the tungsten surface. A correction for this effect using free-convection theory fits the rate data over the entire oxygen-pressure range from 10-8 to 1 atrn as well as data using O2-A mixtures. Below 10-6 atrn and above 2000°C, e decreases with increasing temperature because of desorption of oxygen atoms. Below 2000°C the rate decreases with decreasing temperature at all oxygen pressures following an apparent activation energy of 42 kcal per mole and depending on (Po2)n with n varying between 0.55 and 0.80. MOST of the previous tungsten oxidation studies have employed gravimetric methods and have been limited to temperatures below 1000°C where the weight loss associated with evaporation of tungsten oxides is negligible compared with the weight gain from oxidation.' At higher temperatures, oxygen-consumption rates have been determined from pressure measurements, usually at constant flow rates, by Langmuir,2 Eisinger,3 Becker, Becker, and Brandes,4 and Anderson.5 The sensitivity of this method decreases with increasing pressure and, with the exception of Langmuir's work, these investigations were confined to pressures below 10-6 atm. Above approximately 1300°C, depending on the oxygen pressure, the rate of oxide evaporation is greater than the oxide-formation rate and the recession of the tungsten surface can be measured optically without interference from an oxide layer. This was first done by Perkins and crooks6 who heated tungsten rods in air pressures from 1 to 40 torr at temperatures between 1300" and 3000°C. The present investigation of the oxidation kinetics of tungsten at high temperatures emphasizes oxygen pressures from 10-6 to 1 atm. This is the range of interest for earth atmosphere re-entry applications of tungsten for which little data were previously available. APPARATUS The apparatus is a modification of the type used by Perkins and crooks.' Ground tungsten seal rods, 6 in. long by 0.125 in. diam, were mounted vertically between two water-cooled electrodes, one fixed and the other having free vertical travel. The movable counter-weighted electrode is prevented from undergoing horizontal displacement by three sets of runners mounted at 120-deg intervals. Electrical contact is made by means of a water-cooled mercury pool. A 24-in. vacuum bell jar having a volume of approximately 267 liters was used as the reaction chamber with the sample holder mounted in the middle of the chamber. Power was supplied from an 800-amp dc variable power supply. Temperature readings were made by means of a Latronics automatic two-color recording pyrometer. With this instrument, corrections for emissivity are not necessary provided the spectral emissivi-ties at two closely spaced wavelengths are equal. Supporting measurements were made with a micro-optical pyrometer corrected for emissivity of bare tungsten and window absorptivity. The micro-optical pyrometer was calibrated against a National Bureau of Standards calibrated tungsten lamp and both pyrometers were periodically checked against the melting points of tungsten and molybdenum using the oxidation apparatus. Above 10-6 atm, pressures were measured with an Alphatron gage calibrated against a McCleod gage. At 10-6 atm, a hot-filament ionization gage was employed. A magnified image of the self-illuminated tungsten rod was formed using a 360-mm objective lens mounted outside the bell jar. When the experiment exceeded 1 hr, the image was focused on a ground-glass plate about 10 ft from the tungsten rod at about X8 and the recession of the thickness of this image was monitored with a Gaertner cathe-tometer. When faster rates were encountered, a 35-mm time-lapse cinecamera with a telephoto lens and bellows extension was substituted for the ground-glass plate and cathetometer. Diameter recession rates were determined from the photograph image projected on the screen of an analytical film reader. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE After installing the rod in the apparatus and cleaning it with acetone, the system was evacuated to 5 1 x 10-5 torr. Before oxygen was introduced,

At Buffington Station, Gary, Ind., Universal Atlas Cement operates fourteen 8 x 101/2 x 155-ft cement kilns in mill 6 and two 11 x 360-ft kilns in the Harbor plant. The No. 11 and 12 kilns in mill 6 are equipped with Manitowac recuperator sections. This report describes studies in measuring exterior shell temperatures on several of these kilns and the development of a traveling radiation pyrometer with certain novel features. Preliminary Work: At first various temperature-sensing devices were placed on the steel shell: 1) crayons with calibrated melting points, 2) colored paints with temperature-calibrated pigments, 3) aluminum paints with temperature-calibrated binders, and 4) metal-stem dial thermometers. The colored paints and aluminum paints failed to indicate the temperatures correctly. The crayons and thermometers did indicate fairly correct temperatures, but it proved impossible to apply enough of these on the shell to detect all the potential areas where hot spots might develop. Furthermore, considerable labor was required to apply these sensors and read the temperatures. Consequently no further work was done with these devices. Formation of Hot Spots: In the burning or clinker-ing zone of a cement kiln, the thickness of the protective coating and thickness of the brick govern the amount of heat transmitted to the steel kiln shell. Usually the protective coating consists of 4 to 8 in. of fused cement clinker. The formation of a hot spot is usually caused by loss of coating? that is, localized areas of the coating become thin or fall away from the refractory. This is generally caused by excessive temperature in the burning zone over a fairly long period of time. It may also be caused by a sudden thermal change in the burning zone. Variations in raw feed composition and in feed rate require changes in the fuel and air rates, and when these are not appropriately altered, conditions may develop in the kiln that will result in loss of coating. Luminescence on the kiln shell indicates that a hot spot has developed to a point that usually alters the refractory's thermal conductivity properties. When this thermal weakness zone occurs in the burning zone of the kiln, constant vigilance is required to protect it by maintaining proper coating. Even so, it has been the writers' experience that within a period of several days to about four weeks the hot spot usually recurs with greater severity. This necessitates shutting down the kiln and re-bricking the affected area. One of the prerequisites of a good burnerman is the ability to maintain a protective coating despite the many variables in operation. When he knows that it is getting thin or that an area has dropped off, he reduces the firing rate and kiln speed and brings feed into the affected area in an effort to rebuild the coating. But when powdered fuel is burned, the atmosphere of the kiln may prevent the burnerman's observing the condition of the coating closely at all times without taking off the fire. It is not considered good practice to do this frequently, as it imposes a thermal shock on the coating and upsets operation of the kiln. To help the burnerman scan the shell of the kiln along the burning zone, therefore, a radiation pyrometer, connected to a potentiometric recorder, was mounted on a slowly moving steel cable. The theory of operation, construction details, and adaptability of the radiation pyrometer are included in an excellent monograph' and also in a textbook.' Shell temperatures of the Atlas Cement kilns were measured with a Brown Instruments Div. low intermediate range Radiamatic unit, of range 200" to 1200°F, and a circular chart Electronik potentio-metric recorder, of range 500" to 1000°F. In Bulletin 59095M the supplier publishes standard calibration data (millivolts vs degrees Fahrenheit) for this radiation pyrometer, These data, however, apply only to flat surfaces having emissivities of unity. Calibration of Radiation Pyrometer for Use on Curved Surfaces: When applied to surface temperature measurements, the radiation pyrometer reading depends on the nature of the surface, the material of which it is composed, and also to some extent on the temperature of the surroundings. Although the present radiation pyrometer is designed to give a calibrated response under ideal (black body) conditions when used commercially, it must be calibrated empirically. The calibration procedure, given below, follows that described by Dike (Ref. 1, pp. 38-39). Using alternating tension-compression straining, the hardening of magnesium oxide single crystals was studied up to large stresses and strains. At 0.25 pct plastic strain amplitude, the hardening curve is approximately linear with slope 25,000 psi from the shear yield stress, 7 to 8000 psi, to 35,000psi. Above this stress, the slope decreases. The strain hardening behavior of MgO is considered qualitatively similar to that of metal single crystals. The relatively high stress attainable by strain hardening is associated apparently with the high yield stress on the cross-slip system, (001) <110>. Cleavage fracture during testing is uncommon. It is argued that the centers of high internal stress at glide band intersections, at which cracks tend to nucleate, are dispersed by cyclic strain. Special features of the glide band structure produced by cyclic strain and revealed by dislocation etch pits, support this view. Strain hardened MgO has mechanical properties greatly superior to the as-received material: yield stress, greater than 100,000 psi; elongation to fracture about 1 pct. A material is said to strain harden if the yield stress increases with an increment of plastic strain. This definition is usually applied for straining done in one direction, but is also applicable when the strain direction is periodically reversed, Fig. 1. For certain metal single crystals, data are available which permit a comparison of the hardening behavior for cyclic straining and for tension straining.&apos;-4 With certain qualifications, these data show that the same processes of hardening are operative in each type of test.5 Despite this fact, the importance of the technique is not immediately evident, although tension-compression studies of the common metals appear to suggest some deficiencies in theories of strain hardening developed exclusively on the basis of tensile tests. However, a recent observation suggests that the cyclic straining method may be very useful for studying semibrittle crystals in which large plastic strains are not accessible in unidirectional testing. The observation is that zinc crystals, when strained in tension-compression at -52°C, do not fail by cleavage at low stress (-500 psi)6 as they do in tension, but harden to a limiting stress of more than 5000 psi over a total plastic strain of about 600 pct.2 An important characteristic of the behavior of zinc crystals is the high stress, relative to the yield stress, attainable by strain hardening. By comparison, the hardening of aluminum single crystals tested by an identical technique saturates at 1100 psi. This difference is best explained by the cross-slip hypothesis of dynamic recovery.7,8 In zinc, cross slip is difficult because of the high yield stress for glide on planes other than the basal plane in the < 1120 > zone. The present work was undertaken in order to test whether these methods and ideas are applicable to other materials. Magnesium oxide single crystals, in common with most crystals of the rock-salt structure, deform plastically but fail by cleavage after a small strain when tested in tension. It was hoped that larger strains would be attained using tension-compression. There is, in addition, evidence 8a which shows that slip on the probable cross system, (001) < 110>, is difficult in magnesium oxide; it may therefore be possible to attain high stresses by strain hardening. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Experimental methods used in this study were based in part on techniques reported in papers of Stokes, Johnston, and Li.&apos; MgO blocks, purchased from Norton Co., were used without further annealing. Specimens were cleaved to dimensions approximately 0.125 in. sq and 1 in. in length. The gage section, formed by chemical polishing, was sprinkled with 280 mesh silicon carbide particles in order to introduce fresh dislocations. The crystals were then cemented into cylindrical aluminum adapters and clamped in an Instron testing machine. One of two alternating straining programs was used. In the first, total cross-head travel was established and increased in steps after various numbers of cycles. In the second, a capacitance gage was used to directly measure the elongation of the specimen and the crosshead was controlled so as to keep the plastic strain amplitude constant. The straining was always symmetrical with respect to the initial, zero strain condition. While both procedures produce strain hardening, only the latter permits a measure of the total plastic strain so that hardening curves may be drawn. Constant plastic strain amplitude tests were done

Historically, rock deposits and sand deposits of titanium minerals came into production about the same time, although there may be some argument as to what is meant by production. Beach deposits of heavy minerals in India (Figs. 1-4) and Brazil (Figs. 5) were worked for monazite about the turn of century, but as there was then no market for titanium minerals, these were thrown away. The rock rutile deposits at Roseland, Va., Fig. 6, were worked to supply rutile for titanium chemicals and for coloring ceramics long before there was a titanium pigment business. The pigment industry started about the middle twenties, both in Europe and the U. S., and almost simultaneously the rock deposits at Ponte Vedra Beach near Jacksonville, Fla., were worked for titanium content. Since those days, production from both types of deposits has continued to grow at a rapid rate; many deposits of both types have been found, and reserves have grown to very large figures. In total tonnage of reserves, there is no doubt that the rock deposits are far ahead of the sand deposits; nevertheless there is a very large tonnage of commercial sands available. It is the quality of titanium mineral in the sand and the relatively lower costs of operating sand deposits that have kept them abreast, at least in annual tonnage produced, with the rock deposits. The principal titanium mineral used is ilmenite, but as soon as that mineral began to be sought as a titanium ore, it was obvious that there are ilmenites and ilmenites. Textbook ilmenite should have the composition FeOTiO2 and should analyze 52.6 pct TiO2 and 36.8 pct iron as Fe. The Indian ilmenite, for almost a generation the standard ore for manufacturing pigment in the U. S., was found to analyze about 60 pct TiO, and only 24 pct. Fe, and most of the iron is in the ferric condition. The whole process of pigment manufacture in the U. S. was built up on the use of a raw material of that grade, and the American chemical engineers who operate the pigment plants shuddered at the thought of using a rock ilmenite with 45 pct or so of TiO, and nearly 40 pct Fe. Intensive search was made around the world to find other deposits of rich black sand, like the Indian beaches, but although a few were found, there was some objectionable feature about each. A deposit in Senegal, south of Dakar (Fig. 7), was worked for a while, but an organic coating on the grains made attack by acid difficult. Modern practice would have included a scrubbing operation, in a caustic soda bath, to eliminate the organic coating. Brazilian deposits were numerous, but individually small, and shipping from them difficult. Deposits on the east coast of Ceylon had many attractive features, but the ilmenite analyzed only 54 pct TiO2 and could have been used only with a penalty. Sand deposits with 2 pct ilmenite, like those now worked in Florida, would not have been considered commercial ore, even if they had been known at that time. Most rock ilmenites are associated or mixed with hematite or magnetite, which accounts for the lower titanium and higher iron values than in the sand ilmenites. The Norwegians, English, and Germans, with cheap Norwegian rock ore at hand, learned to install in their pigment plants adequate capacity on the black side, as it is calltd, and counterbalanced the extra cost of plant, and larger amount of acid used, by the lower cost of ore. When World War II arrived, two of the largest pigment manufacturers in the U. S. had to learn how to use the Adirondack ilmenite, but one of them very gladly went back to sand ores when the Florida deposits came into large-scale production after the war. The other continues to use Adirondack ilmenite and finds it commercially attractive to do so. Rutile is not a raw material for titanium pigment manufacture by the sulfate process, since it is insoluble in sulfuric acid. In addition to its small consumption in chemicals and ceramics it began to be used in quantity in welding rod coatings. With the outbreak of World War 11, and the tremendous need for welding rods in shipbuilding and other structural steel construction, rutile suddenly became in heavy demand. The sand deposits on the eastern shore of Australia (Fig. 8A) which had been worked in a small way since 1934 were brought into production, and some stream placers in Brazil were worked and rutile concentrates shipped to American
