It may be said that the history of gold in the Black Hills begins with one of South Dakota's most. interesting relics, the so-called Thoen Stone, now in the Adams Memorial Hall at Deadwood. This slab of reddish sandstone, about 14 in. square, was found in by Louis and Ivan Thoen, at the base of Lookout Mountain, near Spearfish, a town in the northern foothills of the Black Hills uplift. Both sides of the stone bear clearly legible inscriptions. One side reads: Came to these hills in 1833. Seven of us, De Lacompt, Ezra Kind, G. W. Wood, T. Brown, R. Kent, Wm. King, Indian Crow. All ded but me, Ezra Kind. Killed by Indians beyond the high hills. Got our gold June 1834. On the reverse side: Got all the gold we could carry. Our ponys all got by the Indians. I hav lost iny gun and nothing to eat, and Indians hunting me. Attempts were made to trace these men. Relatives of Brown were found in Missouri, and it was learned that he had left for the West in 1832, with one Kent. Kind's relatives were also found, and stated that he had started West the same year. None of them had been heard from since their departure. So Kind failed to get out with "all the gold we could carry"; 15 years later California became the center of the first great gold rush, and the Hills waited 40 years for their gold to be rediscovered. It is interesting to speculate on what might have been "the course of Empire" had this little group won through. The history of Dakota, of Montana, indeed, of all the Northwest, might have been very different. When, late in 1875, the goldseekers arrived, they passed quickly northward from the first discovery near Custer, and soon were established on Deadwood Creek, along which, as well as for short distances above the mouths of its tributary streams, Blacktail and Bobtail, placer operations went forward vigorously. These placers were near the northern outcrop of the Homestake ore-body. Their gold was partly derived from this, perhaps in greater quantity from the erosion of the conglomerate or cement deposits, of Potsdam time, themselves a "fossil placer" or beach deposit formed by

Subsidence caused by mining operations has been a matter of interest for the mining engineer for just 111 years, since the Belgian committee for study of subsidence in the city of Liege submitted its first report in 1825. This interest is fairly expressed in the enormous amount of literature that has since appeared on this subject. A bibliography, probably far from being complete, which preceded this study as a preliminary survey, comprises more than 800 titles. In spite of this fact the problem remains today as acute as it has ever been. The questions of as good a recovery as possible of the national resources, the safety of the operations, and the protection of private and public property are the important angles from which to look at the problem. The Problem To systematize an investigation regarding the effects of mine excavations two different aspects have to be dealt with: (1) the subsidence of the immediate roof above the workings, affecting the safety of the workers and the progress and efficiency of the operations; (2) the subsidence of the surface, which is also, from the point of time, the second event. The immense importance of surface subsidence as regards the impairment of surface structures of every kind in a mining area is self-evident. Both effects result from reactions of the strata overlying the excavations and they depend mainly on the extent of the excavations and the structure and geological condition of the strata. It has been stressed repeatedly, in this country principally by G. S. Ricel,† that for the understanding of the phenomenon of subsidence accurate surveys are the most urgent necessity. In the past, however, at least in the normal course of mining operations, these surveys have been very crude. The control of the roof in the mine is left to the observation of the behavior of the timber, warning cracks and sounds in roof and walls and to the general judgment and experience of the worker and his supervisors. In any given case this may or may not be sufficient to prevent fatalities but certainly it does not give any accurate information as to what is happening in roof and strata. The concepts of "redox potential" and "oxide-ion activity" are suggested as measures of the fundamental slag properties of interest to the extraction metallurgist. Thermodynamic data for single oxides are presented graphically in these terms and a method of expressing desulfurization of steel in electrochemical terms is indicated. The application of the theovy to mixtures of oxides (slags) is discussed and the redox potential is shown to provide a link between all the redox equilibria in a slag-metal system. In particular, the redox potential of the slag, its basicity, and the oxygen partial It is now generally recognized that slags are mixtures of polymeric anions of silicates, aluminates, phosphates, and so forth, neutralized by cations. However, conventional thermodynamic treatments of slags have almost always been in terms of activities of the pure component oxides (e.g., SiO,, CaO, A1203, and so forth), which are known not to exist as such in slags. While this type of empirical treatment is perfectly acceptable and provides a rigorous and self-consistent way of considering thermodynamic properties, it can give little guide to the structure of slags, since its very nature ig- pressure are closely connected. Direct deternzination of these by electrode-potential measurements is possible. Literature calculations of ion activities in the system Ca0 -Fe0-SiO,/molten iron are used to evaluate redox potentials, which are shown to correlate with data on sulfur partition in the system. In addition to its application to equilibrium conditions, an electrochenzical approach to slag-metal reactions might provide a basis for new methods of studying the kinetics of these reactions and for plant-control instruments in the pyrometallurgical industries. nores such complications. Recently, the thermodynamic properties of some slags have been successfully interpreted in terms of activities of anions of varying degrees of complexity. (While these have been successful curve-fitting exercises, there is no direct implication that the anions used in the models are necessarily the ones which actually exist in slags.) The success of these ionic thermodynamic treatments is encouraging but a complete picture of slag structure is still a long way off. What is needed is a complete knowledge of the values of stability constants for all reactions in slags of the type:

When one solid phase is generated from another, fixed and rational orientation relationships are observed to subsist between the parent and the new crystal. The principle has been proposed1 that the relationships obtaining between the same two phases are identical whatever the type of phase change involved, or whichever of the phases may act as parent. Many types of phase changes have been studied: allotropic transformations in pure metals, precipitation from solid solutions, eutectoid decompositions, peritectic reactions, the formation of oxide layers, and others2 Phase layers generated by diffusion of one metal into another constitute an additional type of reaction. This report provides new data on the orientation relationships occurring between phase layers formed by diffusion, in the Cu-Zn system,§ and furnishes further evidence in support of the principle. Materials and Methods The Cu-Zn system is especially suitable for these studies since the high vapor pres- sure of Zn provides an opportunity readily to create one phase poorer in Zn upon a parent phase richer in Zn by removing Zn by vaporization, or to reverse this process by adding Zn from Zn vapor; e.g., the beta phase can be found as a layer upon gamma by dezincing, or gamma can be found on beta by addition of Zn from Zn vapor. Since orientation relationships are to be sought, requiring crystals large enough for orientation determinations, it is convenient to prepare single crystals or large grains of the parent phase. The samples were prepared from oxygen-free high-conductivity copper and Horse Head zinc by melting under a borax flux in a graphite crucible. Large crystals of beta brass were grown by the strain-anneal method, in plates sectioned from the cast ingots, by the following procedure. Rockwell-hardness indents were made at I cm. intervals and with various loads, then the plates were annealed for 4 days at 700°C. in Nichrome boxes packed with beta-brass chips and graphite. Surface layers were removed by grinding and etching to a depth of about 1.0 mm., and individual grains were cut out. Crystals of alpha and gamma brass were prepared by freezing, by lowering a graphite crucible at speeds less than one inch per hour through a furnace held at a constant temperature above the melting point. Single crystals were cut out with a jeweler's saw, ground, polished and etched. Care was taken to remove cold-worked layers from the finished crystals

Introduction The procedures used to design slopes in rock have only been developed over the past 10 years. Therefore, continued review and assessment of field experience by the publication of case studies is necessary to determine the accuracy of the theory and the application of the design techniques being used. Where failures have occurred, mine management should insist that the slides be 'back analyzed' to determine the shear strength parameters at failure. These values should be used for any pit design as they reflect site conditions more accurately than any other procedure. The previous papers have dealt with the basic concepts and factors that influence stability. To illustrate the application of these concepts in the study of practical stability problems, six ease studies have been selected for review. The examples include failure of tailings dams due to an earthquake, failure and redesign of a slope in overburden, review of failures of rock slopes, calculation of the amount of seepage into a pit and influence of the groundwater on stability, and the design of slopes for a proposed 2,500 ft. deep open pit mine. All but the first example are drawn from the authors personal experience. EXAMPLE 1 Failure of Tailings Dams Due to an Earthquake On March 28. 1965 a serious earthquake occurred in Chile with the epicenter located near the town of La Liqua, about 80 miles north of Santiago. The earthquake had a rating of 7 to 7.25 on the Richter scale. A record of the acceleration was taken at Santiago where a maximum horizontal acceleration of 0.18 g. was recorded. Many small mines are located in this region. Each of the mines provided impoundment storage for tailings with one to three dykes. As a result of the earthquake, most of the dams failed. The most serious failure involved two dams at El Cobre where more than 2,700,000 cu. yd. of tailings flowed into the valley, travelled over 7 miles in a few minutes, destroyed part of the town of El Cobre and killed more than 200 people. The Chilean government commissioned an investigation into the failures. A summary of the findings was published by Dobry and Alvare7 in 1967 (1). This work was first undertaken for the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in 1919-20, by C. E. Julihn, superintendent of the station at Minneapolis. Learning of the interest, in this subject, of B. F. Tillson, of the New Jersey Zinc Co., Mr. Julihn and Mr. Foley went to Franklin, N. J., and discussed the matter with him. A conference in Chicago, in November, 1920, was attended by Dr. F. G. Cottrell, who was then Director of the Bureau of Mines, and representatives of the Bureau of Mines and of the hlissouri School of Mines and Metallurgy; at this time a cooperative plan of work was agreed upon by the Bureau of Mines and the Missouri School of Mines. In February, 1921, Mr. 'Tillson arranged a conference on this subject at the time of the annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, at which several technical papers were presented. In a paper, the Breakage and Heat Treatment of Hock Drill Stcels, he suggested a program that might be carried out in connection with the investigation of the problem. At this conference Mr. Manning, former Director of the Bureau of Mines, suggested the formation of an advisory committee to the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards for prosecution of this investigation. On Feb. 20, 1922, a secoud conference in New York, at the time of the annual meeting of the American Institute of mlining and Metallurgical Engineers, was attended by representatives of various technical societies. At this meeting, the report of Nov. 20, 1921, of the Chiefs of Divisions of Metallurgy of the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards, was discussed and it was agreed: 1. That the survey recommended by the two bureaus should be undertaken, which survey would have for its object the ascertaining of the present status of the practice of the heat treatment of drill steels, the extent to which the breakage occurs, etc.; and 2. That a report should be presented, of the findings of those who made the survey, to the Advisory Board to the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards. The Bureau of Standards assigned $4000 to the prosecution 01 a three-months' survey, which was carried out in April, May, and June, 1922, of about sixty mines

Discussion Of the paper Of GEORGE K. BURGESS, J. J. CROWE, H. S. RAWDON, and R. G. WALTENBERG, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin NO. 93, September, 1914, pp. 2433 to 2437. ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.-The Bureau of Standards has once more rendered a public service. Manufacturers and consumers of steel rails alike should welcome the important results now laid before them by Dr. Burgess and his co-workers. Personally I welcome these results all the more that in the past, as some of the members may remember, I have never failed, when occasion arose, to call the attention of rail manufacturers to the importance of controlling the finishing temperature of their rails. The pioneer metallographic work conducted at the South Works of the Illinois Steel Co. in the early '90s clearly brought out the close relations existing between the manufacture, properties, and finishing temperature of steel rails and I think I may say without fear of being contradicted that the results of this early investigation had considerable influence in drawing the attention of manufacturers to the importance of finishing temperature and of heat treatment in general. The results now before us should be, it seems to me, of great value to rail manufacturers in their efforts to produce a better and, above all, a safer rail. It seems to be demonstrated in this paper that there is no difficulty in installing in rail mills pyrometric outfits, making it possible to record, without interfering in the mill operations, the temperature of the rails as they leave the finishing rolls, or of the ingots as they are withdrawn from the soaking pits, or at any intermediate point in the process of manufacture. The inference necessarily follows that manufacturers should see to it that such pyrometric installations are made, in order that they may actually know, instead of guessing at, the temperature of their rails;, and, for obvious reasons, rail consumers should insist upon such installations. In the rolling of heavy sections especially should care be taken to lower their finishing temperature, seeing that the present tendency is to finish them at higher temperature, whereas, owing to the slower cooling of their central portions, which makes for coarseness of grain, they should, if anything, be finished at a lower temperature than lighter rails.

THE Institute of Metals Division opened its series of meetings by a session* on lead, R. S. Dean be-ing in the chair and G. 0. Hiers acting as vice-chairman. A large and representative audience listened to the papers in the abstract and contributed an inter-esting and fruitful discussion. The main points of these papers and discussion are given below: In the absence of Carl E. Swartz, the summary and conclusions of his paper, "A Study of the Lead-Tin-Cadmium System with Reference to Their Use as Solders," were read. Swartz investigated a number of alloys in the lead-tin-cadmium system and prepared a diagram representing the solidification ranges of these alloys. He also made tensile strength tests of joints made with these alloys, and compared these with joints made with ordinary lead-tin solder. The tests showed solders containing cadmium were equally strong as the lead-tin series and that the cadmium alloys were suit-able in other respects for use as solders. In general, solders of the composition near to the ternary lead-tin-cadmium eutectic appeared to be the best for most soldering work although compositions widely differing are desirable for special purposes. The lead-tin-cad-mium solders are finding a market particularly in the fields requiring lower solidification temperatures than common solders. Mr. Darby opened the discussion and asked whether it was a fact that the lead-tin-cadmium solders were more useful than ordinary solders on galvanized and tin-plated sheet. C. Smith said he thought it to be a fact that galvanized sheet was more easily soldered by the lead-tin-cadmium solders than common lead-tin-solder. Continuing, Mr. Smith showed lantern slides of his own investigation of the thermal diagram and recommended the 70 per cent lead, 20 per cent cadmium, and 10 per cent tin for general employment. He thought the author did not differentiate between wetting and alloying and pointed out that wetting was more a ques-tion of the flux than the metal. In some cases a definite alloy was formed by soldering and in some no evidences of alloying were found. Illustrating the former case he showed slides and demonstrated that failures always took place longitudinal with the brittle compound alloy and transversely across the solder itself.

INTRODUCTION DURING the past several years the steel casting industry has made studies of heavy castings in which the test bar has been taken from heavy sections rather than from attached or separately cast coupons. It has been noted that the ductility properties of these heavy sections are often lower than those normally expected. Such lowered ductility is usually accompanied by a spotty test bar fracture and the ductility values often can be greatly improved if a low-temperature aging treatment is given to the casting. A loss of ductility of this type is considered "abnormal," since it is not accompanied by an increase of tensile strength or hardness, and "temporary" when the ductility can be restored by aging. The cure of such an abnormal condition represents a real improvement in the quality of the steel. Some hundreds of previous investigations, largely qualitative in nature, have established beyond reasonable doubt that hydrogen is normally present in newly manufactured steel and that this gas, in small amounts, can cause a temporary abnormal loss of ductility. The commonly observed association of high gas content and low ductility has given strong evidence for the presumption that hydrogen, possibly assisted by other gases, is the primary cause of the low ductility observed. Accordingly, the Steel Founders' Society of America has, since Nov. 1, 1944, sponsored investigations at Battelle Memorial Institute whose primary objective is to obtain quantitative information on the relation of the amount of hydrogen and nitrogen in steel, together with associated methods of steelmaking and treatment, to low-ductility effects and porosity. In order that these investigations might proceed on a quantitative basis, hydrogen analyses of a precision considerably higher than any previously reported in the literature were necessary. The method chosen was selected entirely on the basis that it had the highest probability of freedom from uncontrollable errors and will be described in detail in another publication.1 Briefly, the method used consisted of the hot extraction of solid pieces of steel weighing from 45 to 50 g in a highly evacuated quartz tube maintained at 1050°C (1925°F) for a period 0f approximately 40 hr. The greatest precautions were taken to eliminate blanks and insure a sound gas-collection system. Vacuum and temperature conditions were maintained automatically. Statistical screening is so named because a particulate feed is separated into "size" intervals on the basis of the probabalistic behavior of the individual particles (i.e., their probability of passing the screen) rather than by physical restraint. To illustrate this statement, consider a conventional screening operation. A particle which is larger than the openings in the screen cloth is physically restrained from passing through and is repeatedly reflected from the surface until it is discharged as oversize. Of those particles smaller than the screen openings, the very smallest tend to pass the screen near the feed end while those nearer in size to the screen opening tend to pass at a greater distance from the feed end. Alternatively, we could say that the particles with high probability of passing through the screen are concentrated near the feed end while particles of low probability of passing are dispersed from the feed end. This tendency to segregate is the basis for size separation by statistical screening. The purpose of this note is to: 1) Show that the distribution of material passing an array of screens can be described by a modified binomial distribution. 2) Demonstrate that an efficient size separation can be made by this technique. 3) Relate some of the more important screening parameters to the efficiency of the size separation. The Distribution Function The distribution of undersize products along the length of a screen can be derived with the help of a few simple definitions and assumptions. 1) First, we must assume that each particle has some probability of passing a screen on a single presentation. Further, we must assume that this probability is constant and is not affected by the position of the particle on the screen. It must also be acknowledged that several factors enter into this probability. Among them are the "action" of the screen, the slope of the deck, the shape of the openings, etc. The relationship between these factors, however. is not the subject of this paper. 2) To simplify calculations, all particles falling within a size range on the Tyler scale, e.g., —x + x/ mm, are assumed to have the same probability. 3) It is assumed that particles which do not pass the screen on a presentation are reflected a unit distance forward, i.e., the direction of material travel. A unit distance is defined as the distance between the centers of consecutive wires in the screen cloth.

Discussion of the paper of W. C. PHALEN, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 93, September, 1914, pp. 2249 to 2265. DAVID T. DAY, Washington, D. C.-Consider the United States broadly and the distribution of the salt industry. Think of the old solar-evaporation process up in New York State, then of the more recent processes in Michigan and Kansas and Louisiana, where the rock salt furnishes a large industry, then of the solar-evaporation process at Salt Lake, then turn to the crucial place in the United States, where there is an embarrassment of salt, and that is California. I am not forgetting' the immense body of salt east of that in the Virgin River country of Utah; but in California the situation is interesting. There are very large quantities of salt in the Searles Marsh region; again, in Southern California, at the southern end of Death Valley, there are two or three mountains of salt which have been explored recently, where the salt is sufficiently pure to be used at once. There is also a large deposit of gypsum, and it would be possible there, by extremely cheap means, to produce an amount of salt sufficient to furnish the United States' greatest needs. The principal reason that capital has been deterred from developing such a large mass is not the fact that solar evaporation produces a great deal of salt around San Francisco, but the fact that if potash salt is to be produced in connection with the salt in the borax region a, great deal of ordinary salt must be disposed of. It cannot be dumped, for it would get back into the brine again; the first rains would bring that salt back into solution again. It must be sold, given away, or hauled to a distance, which would mean a considerable freight charge. The salt will be going begging. E. G. SPILSBURY, New York, N. Y.-The remark of Dr. Day's regarding the likelihood of the production of a large amount of waste salt brings to my mind the condition that obtains in Germany in all of the potash fields. In Germany salt is a government monopoly. In the development of the potash deposits, it becomes a grave question as to how much salt they may be allowed to extract and bring to the surface.

REISTLE, Laramie, Wyo.-The application of water analysis to petroleum engineering problems is successful in many cases, particularly if the water in the sands is of uniform chemical constituency and if each sand water varies definitely from the others in its chemical properties. At Salt Creek, the sand waters are not of uniform chemical character, and the waters in the various sands do not differ greatly; so a water from one sand might easily be classified as a water from some other sand. The water from the Shannon sand contains sulfates; this alone makes it possible to differentiate between the Shannon and the First and Second Wall Creek and Lakota sands. However, it is not so easy to differentiate between water of the First and Second Wall Creek sands. As a rule, the Second Wall Creek sand contains a higher concentration of mineral matter, but in Table 19, sample 2; of the First Wall Creek sand and sample 7 of the Second Wall Creek sand have approximately the same amount of total solids. As a rule, the chlorides are higher in the Second sand waters than in the First sand; but, the chlorides in sample 6 of the Second sand show practically the same amount as sample 3 of the First sand. The use of reaction properties does not. solve this trouble, as they generalize the conditions even more. For instance, the reaction properties of sample 3 of the First sand are almost identical with the reaction properties of sample 6, of the Second sand. The authors suggest that the chemical characteristics of the water in a sand are not uniform because of the concentration of the water by underground evaporation. In that case should not the ratio of the various chemical constituents remain the same? Gas does remove some mineral matter, as evidenced by deposits in the gas lines and packing in the absorbers of the natural gasoline plants, but why does the gas act selectively, removing one salt and not all of the salts in the ratio that they occur?

Following the development of electrolytic manganese production by the Bureau of Mines, an extensive program was planned to study the character of this high-purity product and its possible utilization in various alloy combinations. Previous work reported in the literature concerning alloys containing substantial amounts of manganese dealt largely with material prepared from relatively impure grades of the metal, and in many instances the impurities thus introduced did not permit true evaluation of manganese as an alloying element. One phase of the Bureau's program included a general review of the system and the establishment of the physical properties of copper-manganese-zinc alloys, using electrolytic manganese, and with particular emphasis directed to compositions within the alpha solid solution area. A number of reports of the work on alloys in this system, giving specific data concerning the equilibrium system and some of its alloys, have already been published. One study' established the alpha solid solution area at various temperature levels and composition ranges up to 50 pct manganese. Other investigation reports presented the properties of selected alloys; namely, a 65 pct copper, I0 pct manganese, 25 pct zinc alloys;1 a sensibly white manganese brass composed of 70 pct copper, 20 pct manganese, 10 pct zinc,3 and a series of alloys with a constant copper content of 60 pct and 5 to 25 pct manganese, balance zinc.4 In these reports tensile properties as influenced by cold-working and subsequent annealing were given in detail. Additional data are now available on other alloys of the alpha region up to 50 pct manganese, and these, together with previously published information, are sufficiently complete to establish the relationship between properties and composition for this portion of the ternary system. The present report is a summary of the tensile properties of wrought alloys in the form of sheet and rod stock. The summary is necessarily limited to data for only one condition of cold-work and a single annealing temperature, since a complete exposition of all the data available would be too extensive for this presentation. Nevertheless, it is possible to make a reasonable approximation of the tensile properties in other conditions of cold-worki"g and annealing by a correlation of the data previously presented on specific alloys and the data given here.

E. G. WOODRUFF, Houston, Tex. (communication to the Secretary*). -Mr. Matteson has presented to us an idea worthy of our careful consideration. We have real troubles in the petroleum industry and as the supply of crude is exhausted our problems become more complicated and more numerous. Therefore, we who are engaged in field work are forced to consider all possible means which promise assistance in the location of prospective pools and the economic development of pools already located. In our country we are accustomed to turn to the. Government for relief in all our troubles. Do we want an Oil and Gas Bureau doctoring us? Will such a bureau do us practical good? The principal point Mr. Matteson suggests is that such a bureau should he authorized to receive and file all well logs. In analyzing such function, I am led to the following conclusions: If well logs are simply to be filed they would be useless. If they are to be filed and the files opened to the public, what benefit will be derived and can such action be taken justly? There is no doubt that if the record of all wells drilled in the United States were available the petroleum industry would be saved an immense amount of needless expense. Accumulating conditions would be better understood and prospecting more intelligently directed. Our other consideration is: can the oil companies be required to open well records to the public justly? I think all will agree that if any one should have the advantage of a well record it should be the company that drilled the well. If the oil companies are forced to file such record and open the files to the public, the company drilling the well cannot derive the exclusive benefit from the money expended. Would it be just for a small company to be compelled to reveal its records of a well it had recently completed, to its strong competitor who holds near or even adjacent leases? Would it have been just to the successful companies, in the Gulf Coast country to have been forced to display their hard-earned knowledge of 15 years to the host of younger competitors who have recently flocked to the Gulf Coast attracted by the success of those who have labored so long and learned of the conditions controlling the fields through the hazards of the industry.

The material balance equation has been used for many years by engineers to determine reservoir performance. The use of this equation in general has been twofold: first, to determine the oil-in-place in a reservoir; and second, to predict the future performance. The Schilthuis form of the material balance equation, or one equivalent to it, has been used by many of the engineers. The use of the Schilthuis form in predicting future performance has proved to be laborious in that one generally must make several estimates at each step of the trial and error calculation before arriving at a check of the oil-in-place. A method is presented for expediting the calculations. The Schilthuis form of the material balance has been rearranged into a more useable form. In using the material balance to predict the future performance of a reservoir, it has become common practice to estimate the incremental oil production for each step of the calculation which corresponds to a given pressure reduction. Instead of estimating the incremental oil production, the method outlined in this paper better lends itself to estimating the instantaneous gas-oil ratio. A check of oil-in-place is more easily accomplished by estimating gas-oil ratio since it is less sensitive to small inaccuracies. This method incorporates the same self-checking feature inherent in the Schilthius form. DEVELOPMENT OF SIMPLIFlED EQUATION In the development of the simplified equation, the Schilthuis form of the material balance equation will he used. Substituting in Equation 1 for and rearranging terms In Equation 2, the cumulative oil production (n) is multiplied by a factor which is uniquely a function of pressure. Also, the cumulative gas production (G) and net water influx are also multiplied by factors which are a function of pressure alone. Sources of data for the pressure factors are a bottom-hole fluid analysis and the ratio of initial gas cap volume to oil volume in the reservoir. H. G. KNOX,* Norfolk, Va. (written discussion?).-There is one subject that Mr. Hobart seems to have inadvertently omitted from his very valuable paper, and that is corrosion. The shipbuilder, perhaps more than anyone else, has constantly to guard against it, our chief reliance being paint and galvanizing, where practicable. The corrodibility of a welded. joint is salt water must be determined before deciding whether this type of construction is to supersede riveting. At the present time, this question cannot be answered, although considerable work has been started in an attempt to arrive at a conclusion. The British Admiralty and several British shipbuilders have studied it extensively. Their experiments and conclusions have been very carefully followed and reported in this country by Naval Constructor Goodall of the British Navy. To date, these show that no undue fear need be felt from corrosion. At the Norfolk Navy Yard a series of plates welded with various electrodes were submerged in dilute sulfuric acid, such as is used in cleaning prior to galvanizing. While this test may not be conclusive in any quantitative way, it does show a marked difference in the corrodibility of welds made with different electrodes tinder different conditions. To thaw any conclusions from this accelerated this accelerated test would be, however, ill advised. In riveted joints, the exposed heads and points of the rivets always show the greatest tendency to corrode. This is clue to two reasons: first, as they are raised above the surrounding surface the paint is more susceptible to abrasion; and, second, electrolytic action is set up between rivet and plate. These same reasons lead us to expect a tendency of the welded joint to corrode. Various methods have been suggested for decreasing the probable inherent corrodibility of the weld, in addition to the customary coat of paint. These generally embody the introduction of alloys, principally copper; into the electrode material. Plating the electrode with copper is not effective in that the deposited copper segregates in the weld and actually increases the electrolytic action. As far as is known, no extensive test on the so-called copper-bearing alloy steels, which might be made up into electrodes, has been carried out, but when obtainable, electrodes of this alloy will be subjected to service tests.
