Binary iron alloys containing 1 pct of Al, Cr, Mn, Mo, Si, Ti, or V, and 0.4 pct C, 1 pct Cr steels with and without 1.2 pct A1 or 2.0 pct Ti additions, were ion-nilrided at 550° to 600° in N-H mixtures. Nitriding increased the inicrohardne ss of all the binary alloys except those containing manganese or molybdenutn, and also hardened the heat-treated steels if aluminum or titanium urns present. Transmission electron microscopy revealed particle formation in all casts where hardening occurred. Electron diffraction gare positive identifications for ALN, CrN, and a, Si3N4 in the binary alloys, and AlN and CrN in the aluminum- cold chromium-bearing steels, respectil&apos;uly. Cubic VN with a, = 4.13A was tentatively identified. Particles, apparently of CrN, also formed in the base steel but did not increase the hardness very much. Chromium and vanadium formed nitride platelets on {001}° matrix planes, while titanium gave clusters <15A diam. Aluminum nitride precipitated at grain and subgrain boundaries, and within the grains. Silicon gave profuse precipitates of several Morphologies at grain boundaries and cubical particles within the grains. No effect of the alloy carbides on nitride precipitation was observed in the heat-treated steels. THE nitriding of steel has been a well-established commercial process for about 40 years, but in spite of this comparatively long period of use there have been few studies aimed at understanding the process. Most studies, like the early but very competent work of Jones and organ&apos; and nones.&apos; were concerned with establishing the pertinent engineering variables of steel composition, gas composition, temperature, and time. As far as the present authors are aware, there have been no studies of the composition, size, shape, or distribution of the nitrides formed in the nitriding of steel. Noren and Kindbom3 did, however, examine a few nitrided steels by surface replica electron microscopy, and were able to show the presence of car-bonitrides and AlN and TiN nitrides. pitsch4,5 and Hrivnak6 examined nitrided pure iron by transmission electron microscopy. Baird7 found manganese nitrides in Fe-1.6 pct Mn when nitrided at 650°C, using the same technique. In the present work, emphasis was placed on transmission electron microscopy because of its inherently better resolution, using principally binary alloys of iron containing 1 pct of alloying element. In addition, a few simple 0.4 pct C steel compositions were examined to investigate possible carbonitride formation. It was not anticipated that all of the added elements would form nitrides under the conditions used, but it was considered desirable to obtain direct experimental evidence on this point. It would be considerably easier to ascertain the presence of alloy nitrides by examining appropriate binary alloys in preference to relatively complex steels. The work reported here could have been done using orthodox ammonia-nitriding procedures, but an operating ion-nitriding equipment was available, and was therefore used for specimen preparation. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS 1) Materials. Binary alloys were made up from vacuum-melted electrolytic iron with 1 wt pct additions of Cr, Ti, V, Al, Mn, Mo, and Si of about 99.9 pct purity. In addition, three steels were similarly made up—a basis steel with 1 wt pct Cr and 0.4 wt pct C and two steels with further additions of 1.2 wt pct A1 or 2.0 wt pct Ti, respectively. The materials were vacuum-melted and cast as 11-lb heats into tapered square molds of about 2 by 2 in. average cross section. The castings were forged and hot-rolled to 11/4 in. rounds. Discs of 4 in. thickness by about 1 in. diam were machined from the rods. Some of these discs were hot-forged and hot-rolled to about 0.020 in. thick, sand-blasted, and then cold-rolled to about 0.003 in. thick. At this point, the surface was cleaned by light etching with HC1, then washed, dried, and vapor-degreased prior to nitriding. 2) Ion-Nitriding Procedure. The type of ion-nitriding equipment used here is similar to that described by Jones and Martin.8 Briefly, a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen at 5 mm total pressure is placed in a vacuum chamber with a dc potential of 450 to 500 v applied between the work (cathode) and the grounded metal vacuum enclosure (anode). Nitrogen ions are accelerated to the work where a thin layer of Fe4N forms on the surface and thus sets up a nitrogen concentration gradient. This causes nitrogen atoms to diffuse into the surface layers of the alloy forming a finely divided dispersion of alloy nitrides, causing hardening of the surface. In the work to be reported here. the nitriding was carried out at 550° to 600°C to be consistent with commercial nitriding practice. The temperatures cited are those measured by a thermocouple located under a platform on which the work was sitting. Except where otherwise stated, the mixture used in nitriding the binary alloys contained -2.0 pct N, balance hydrogen. The nitrogen concentration in the nitriding gas mixture used for the binary alloys was purposely kept lower than normally used in nitriding steels. 10 to 20 pct, in order to minimize Fe4N formation. In a copper converter air enters the bath in the form of turbulent jets. The interaction of these jets with the molten matte is fundamental to the converting process. In the present study, an equation is derived to describe the trajectory of a gas jet in a liquid. Calculated and experimental results for air jets injected into water are in good agreement. The trajectories of air jets in copper matte are predicted. THE air injected through the tuyeres of a Peirce-Smith copper converter emerges into the bath of molten matte in the form of a highly turbulent jet. The air jets affect a number of chemical and physical processes occurring in the converter: i) Converting Rate. It is generally recognized that the production capacity of a converter is limited by the flow of air which can be injected through the tuyeres and by the oxygen efficiency. In turn, the air flow is limited by pressure drop considerations or by the amount of splashing within the converter. ii) Oxygen Efficiency. This depends on the dispersion of the air jet in the liquid bath, and its trajectory through the bath. iii) Mixing. The jets act as mixing devices by transferring momentum energy to the bath; in this way the heat generated by the converting reactions occurring in the jets is distributed through the bath. iv) Refractory Wear. The proximity of the jets, which are centers of heat generation, to the refractories in the tuyere zone may have an important effect on refractory life. Mixing conditions in the bath will also influence refractory erosion. v) Splashing, and Accretion Build-Up. The energy of the jets is not dissipated entirely in mixing the bath. particles of liquid are carried out kith the gas above the surface of the bath in the form of liquid spouts and droplets. These result in the undesirable build-up of accretions on the converter mouth, and dust losses in the flue gas. Despite the importance of the interaction of the air jets and the matte in a converter, very few studies of the fluid dynamics of converting have been reported in the literature. Metallurgists in the USSR appear to have been more concerned with the subject than their Western counterparts. Deev et al.1 studied the interaction of an air jet with aqueous solutions in a converter model and qualitatively determined the tuyere air velocity and tuyere inclination which produced the most favorable results with respect to good mixing in the bath, and minimum splashing. Shalygin and Meyer-ovich2 also examined the air-matte physical interaction both in models and in industrial converters; they concluded that in conventional converting practice, there was no significant penetration of the air jets into the matte layer, and consequently the converting reactions occurred mainly in a zone adjacent to the tuyeres. The behavior of air jets in a converter bath, and the aerodynamic characteristics of tuyeres are discussed at length in a monograph on converting by Shalygin.3 However, the description of the phenomena occurring in the converter bath is largely qualitative. The side-blown Bessemer converter for steelmak-ing is very similar to the Peirce-Smith copper converter. Among the few investigations of the behavior of air jets in the bath of a Bessemer converter are those of Kootz and Gille4 who studied splashing in the course of an investigation on the effect of blowing conditions and converter shape on nitrogen pick-up in Bessemer steel. They found that during blowing standing waves were formed on the surface of the bath; the amplitude of the waves increased with the depth and angle of tuyere immersion until the whole bath moved backwards and forwards causing heavy splashing. Kazanstev5 used a model of a Bessemer converter to obtain correlations between the axial velocity of a gas jet and distance from the tuyere orifice and the Froude number of the jet. shalygin3 used these results to calculate the horizontal penetration of an air jet in a copper converter; the penetration was defined as the distance in which the axial jet velocity decreased to 10 pct of its initial value. However, the rising trajectory of the jet was not taken into account. In the absence of quantitative information on the fluid dynamics of converting, the design of copper converters has been based mainly on operating experience. Such experience tends to vary widely from smelter to smelter., This is reflected in Table I which is based on data compiled by Lathe and Hodnett.6 Aside from a rough, and perhaps obvious correlation between the total air flow and converter volume, Fig. 1, no pattern emerges from the data. For example, tuyere throat air velocities vary from 215 to 465 ft per sec in converters of the same size, for little apparent reason. The air jet energy input per cubic foot of converter volume, which may be taken as a measure of the amount of mixing in the converter bath, also varies greatly. A recent analysis of converter data by Milliken and Hofinger7 has also revealed unexplained variations in operating parameters. It is believed that by gaining a better understanding of the fluid dynamics of converting a more rational basis may be provided for the design of converters. In particular, it is proposed that if one takes into account the desirable criteria of a high converting rate, high oxygen efficiency and long refractory life, there should be an optimum configuration of tuyere air flow for a converter of a given diameter. The present investigation is concerned with the form and trajectory of an air jet in a converter bath. The general theory of turbulent jets has been expounded by Schlichting8 and Abramovich.9 However, most experi-

Al3Ni whiskers were chemically extracted from unidirectionally solidified Al-A13Ni eutectic ingots, bent into loops, and heated for 0.1 to 10 hr at 320°, 415", and 510°C. The initial strains ranged from 0.003 to 0.055. In all cases, permanent plastic deformation was noted after heat treatment. The deformation consisted of relatively uniform bending at low stresses and temperatures and short times and kinking followed by fracture at high stresses and temperatures and long times. After kinking, the whisker segments adjacent to the kinks were found to have straightened, which is evidence of a dislocation condensation mechanism. The range of temperatures and strains at which time dependent plastic deformation was found indicates that creep of whiskers probably plays a role in the creep of A13Ni whisker-reinforced aluminum. WHISKERS may be defined as nearly perfect single crystals which exhibit high strength. Because they can support high stresses at relatively low strains, they have been successfully employed in reinforcing metals at both ambient and elevated temperatures. In studying the creep behavior of A13Ni whisker-reinforced aluminum at elevated temperatures,1,2 it was noted that the composites exhibited measurable creep deformation. This investigation of the creep relaxation of individual A13Ni whiskel, extracted chemically from the composite was initiated to determine if creep of whiskers could con. "bute to the overall creep of the composite material. Many observations of plastic deformation of metal and halide whiskers have been made. Brenner3-8 noted that copper, silver, and iron whiskers exhibited heterogeneous plastic deformation at room temperature when strained beyond their yield points. Gyulai9 and Gordon10 observed plastic deformation of relatively large (>3 µ) NaCl and KC1 whiskers, although the smallest, most perfect whiskers were completely elastic. Eisner" noted plastic deformation and microcreep of iron and silicon whiskers at room temperature after straining beyond the yield point. Whiskers reported to exhibit creep at stresses below the yield point were zinc1&apos;-" and Silicon.15 Cabrera and price" observed some zinc whiskers which crept at room temperature after a short incubation period but then stopped creeping after a short time. Because some of their specimens exhibited no creep, they concluded that those whiskers that crept were relatively imperfect. Pearson, Reed, and Feldman15 observed similar creep behavior of silicon whiskers at 800°C. They also concluded that creep of the whiskers was a result of imperfections in their crystals. Brenner16 observed delayed failure of A12O3 whiskers at elevated temperatures but found no evidence of plastic deformation up to 2030°C (99 pct of E.EREINAN and M.SALKIND,JuniorMembers AIME,are Research Scientist and Chief, respectively, Advanced Metallurgy Section, United Aircraft Research Laboratories, East Hartford, Conn. Maunscript submitted April 5, 1968. IMD the melting temperature). Brenner also noted7 that some copper and iron whiskers exhibited delayed kinking above 350°C while others did not. One can conclude from these observations that small relatively perfect whiskers could exhibit completely elastic behavior during sustained elevated-temperature loading of composites. Since A13Ni whiskers tested in both bending and tension were found to exhibit no evidence of plastic deformation at room temperature&apos;7&apos;18 this study was initiated to determine whether or not creep of A13Ni whiskers occurred at the elevated temperatures at which creep in the composites was observed. Whiskers were chemically extracted from ingots of unidirectionally solidified A1-A13Ni eutectic, constrained in bending to various elastic strains and heat-treated. The bending constraints were removed after heat treatment and the amount of permanent set was taken as a measure of the time-dependent plastic deformation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Ingots of eutectic Al-A13Ni containing nominally 6.2 wt pet Ni were unidirectionally solidified at approximately 11 cm per hr using a process described elsewhere.19,20 The starting materials were 99.99 pct pure. Cylindrical sections cut from the center of each ingot were placed in a 3 pct aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid and the whiskers were extracted as described previously.17 The whiskers nearest the surface were blackened somewhat due to overexposure to the acid while the center of the ingot was being dissolved These partially attacked whiskers were discarded. An intermediate zone of silver-gray-colored whiskers was collected and stored in methanol for use in relaxation experiments. Individual long pieces of A13Ni whiskers were placed on Fisher Precleaned Microscope Slides. These normally straight whiskers were bent elastically into arcs or loops of varying radii by manipulating their ends with a slender probe. The mass attraction between the whisker and the probe was sufficient to cause the whisker to follow the probe. The whiskers were retained in the elastic bend by the surface tension of a fine residual film on the slides. By using long whiskers, the action of the surface tension on the unlooped ends of the whisker allowed high elastic strains to be maintained in the loops. After each whisker was bent, a photomicrograph was taken for use in measuring the bending strain. The range of strains studied was 0.003 to 0.055. The bent whiskers were then encapsulated in Pyrex tubes at pressures between 10"6 and 5 x 10"6 mm of mercury and heat-treated at 320°, 415°, and 510°C (respectively 53, 61, and 70 pct of the peritectic decomposition temperature). After each heat treatment, the liquid film on the slides was found to have dried, but the whiskers were held in their original shapes by a residue on the slide. Annual production of more than 4,000,000 tons of 0.74 percent copper ore and coincident handling of over 5,000,000 tons of waste at the open-pit mine of Castle Dome Copper Co. near Miami, Ariz. takes a lot of power. Manufacturers have ever co-operated with mining companies in providing the required equipment to suit the problem. Power equipment suppliers have done much to make possible the economic and profitable production of copper from low-grade ores. In the future, as mining operations will necessarily handle even lower-grade ores, the ability of the manufacturer to supply the power and mechanical equipment to produce more metal at a fair and reasonable price will be the good right arm of the miner. About 27,000 tons of concentrate is produced from the 4,000,000 tons of ore.

After the lapse of this period, the Committee will recommend action by the Council, which has the power of final election. The names of candidates were formerly published in the various circulars of the Institute, issued from time to time to the members. Hereafter, they will appear regularly in the Bi-Monthly Bulletin, each number of which will contain the names received since the issue of the preceding Bulletin.

WHEN it came time to write a biography of Philip Kraft, we got out a copy of Bartlett&apos;s "Familiar Quotations" and looked through the references to Travel, Traveled, Traveler, and Traveling, feeling sure there would be some reference to Mr. Kraft. Sure enough, we found: "Travel, in the younger sort, is a part of education; in the elder, a part of experience." Had Francis Bacon done his writing three and a half centuries later, Mr. Kraft might well have served as the inspiration for that sentence. New Yorker born, he received his B.S. and E. M. degrees from Columbia. In 1912, then 22 years old, he took off for Germany where he spent two years studying at the Royal School of Mines, Berlin, for his Doctor of Engineering degree. Contrary to the Greeley-Soule precept, Mr. Kraft, on his return from Europe, went north to South Porcupine. Ont., working as geologist and mining engineer for the Dome Mine. From South Porcupine his next stop was Washington, D. C., where, during the years the country was in the first World War, he was engaged in war work.

The Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation has developed a hydrometallurgical process for recovering nickel from oxidized ores, including both the iron-rich laterites and magnesium-rich, soft silicates. Known as the HSO-HTCP (Hydrothermal Sulfidization Oxidation-High Temperature Cementation in Pulp) Process, the system consists of feed preparation, sulfidization, oxidation, precipitation (cementation), and calcination and melting. This paper deals primarily with the sulfidization and oxidation phases of the process. Nickel sulfide ores lend themselves readily to concentration before smelting or pressure leaching, but neither of the major oxidized ore types — the iron-rich laterites and magnesium-rich, soft silicates-has been directly concentrated. Upgrading of crude ore in current practice is limited to cobbing lumps of the harder, lower grade rock (protore) from the softer, enriched silicate ore, because only a small percentage of the nickel in these ores occurs in discrete, contrasting mineral particles. There is no apparent mineralogical contrast in the superficial, iron-rich lateritic ores and, in fact, there is no firm assurance that the nickel atoms are within the lattices of the limonite minerals, or else irregularly adsorbed on the limonite. Within underlying, "rotten rock" silicates, occasional veinlets of gamierite and related nickeliferous silicates are found.&apos; The gamierite veinlets, however, are only incidental, and the majority of the nickel atoms occur as erratic replacements of magnesium atoms in the micaceous chlorites of the ore mass. Pyrometallurgical processes account for nearly all the nickel currently being recovered from oxidized ores. Plants in New Caledonia, Oregon, Japan, Brazil and Greece smelt the ores to make ferronickels or a sulfide matte,2 and the ammoniacal leaching3 at Nicaro, Cuba, is preceded by a reducing roasL4 The only fully hydrometallurgical installation has been the politically ill-fated Freeport Nickel Co. enterprise, and this process was limited to lateritic ores.5p6 A hydrometallurgical technique which might handle both laterite and the typically richer silicate ores has been an enticing goal. The technique described here was developed at the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation, Inc. on behalf of the Republic Steel Corp. It uses sulfur, heat, air and metallic iron to recover nickel from these ores. Inasmuch as the ores are treated as aqueous slurries, the cost of drying a plant feed that normally carried 30% or more moisture is eliminated, and there are no dust problems. Patent applications have been filed by Republic Steel Corp. on the procedures used for getting the metal into solution and on the subsequent recovery without liquids-so l ids separation of the slurry. It is referred to as the HSO-HTCP Process (Hydrothermal Sulfidization Oxidation — High Temperature Cementation in Pulp). THE PROCESS FLOWSHEET The results of various experimental studies have been combined to form the continuous flowsheet illustrated in Fig. 1. This flowsheet serves as a general pattern showing the sequence of the operations which include: (1) feed preparation; (2) sulfidization; (3) oxidation; (4) precipitation (cementation); and (5) calcination and melting. This paper deals primarily with the sulfidization and oxidation phases of the process. Feed preparation: In general, the silicate ores can be considered as earthy rather than hard, and preparation might be carried out before the addition of water in a trommel, or with water in a scrubber or log washer. This breaks up the earthy particles, allowing the hard lumps to be separated by screening. The oversize material from most ores is relatively barren and may be discarded. If there is occasion to control the iron-magnesium ratio in the plant feed, laterite, which normally breaks up readily into fine sized particles, and silicates are mixed in suitable proportions. The fine product slurry from the initial steps is mixed with elemental sulfur and fed to a conventional ball mill, although the amount of actual grinding that takes place is relatively small. The object of milling is to complete the disintegration to natural particle size and to produce an intimate mixture of the ore and elemental sulfur. DESPITE the zero weather of Monday, the morning meeting on nonferrous ore-reduction metallurgy got under way promptly under the efficient control of Arthur A. Center. The first and third portions of the paper on the Tri-State region were presented by B. M. O&apos;Harra, with R. H. Lowe substituting for co-author Illidge on the second part. Attention was drawn to the compact design attainable when "Sink and Float" was employed as a means of primary concentration. The teaching profession should welcome this concise correlation of data from such a renowned center of lead and zinc production. H. R. Hanley and C. R. Hay¬ward were much interested in the mechanics of charging, manufacture, and life of the retorts.

It has been observed that upon invasion of a sand containing oil or gas and connate water by mud filtrate the hydrocarbons are more rapidly flushed by the filtrate than is the connate water.&apos; In time, it appears that the following displacement pattern emerges: oil (or gas) is being swept ahead by connate water which, in turn, is pushed by invading fluid. Eventually the connate water may have "banked up" sufficiently to form a zone of appreciable thickness leading the invading front. In the extreme case, Fig. 1 shows how the situation will develop.&apos; Immediately adjacent to the borehole (radius r) there is a zone, the invaded zone proper, where the connate water has been flushed out completely and which contains only residual oil or gas and mud filtrate. This zone (extending out to a radius ri) grades more or less abruptly into the next (thickness A), which contains only residual hydrocarbon and connate water. Beyond it, again more or less sharply bounded, extends the virgin formation with the original interstitial water saturation Sw. The various saturations are indicated in Fig. 1. The three zones generally will be marked by resistivity contrasts owing to their different fluid contents. As the connate water is usually more saline than the invading fluid, the second zone having a high connate water saturation forms a concentric cylindrical ring or annulus of low resistivity R, around the borehole.&apos;,&apos; It will be referred to as the "low zone." Fig. 1 shows schematically the resistivity profile. It is clear that the phenomenon of a low zone could not occur in invaded water sands. The presence of a low zone, therefore, would be a qualitative indication of a hydrocarbon-bearing formation. Granted that the phenomenon is real, if it were pronounced enough to be detected, one might thereby have a means of locating oil or gas in the ground. This is the aim of the "displacement logging" method.&apos; In any case, the presence of a low resistivity zone will affect the reading of electric logs. Using conventional log interpretation techniques, one must be aware of this and, if necessary, correct for it. Whether correction or detection should be the goal will depend primarily on the magnitude of the effect. The type of log which is likely to be affected most is the induction log. The current pattern of an induction log is concentric with the borehole. Any concentric ring of low resistivity, therefore, will tend to become crowded by current lines. This zone of maximum current density will obscure the relative contributions to the current conduction by other portions of a bed making, for instance, the contribution of the virgin formation less significant and thus detracting from the value or the induction log as an R, reading device. The present note is intended to ascertain the maximum possible effect of a low zone in the extreme case portrayed by Fig. 1 on three commercially available types of induction logs, sc., 5 FF 27, 5 FF 40 and 3 F 60. Type 5 FF 27 or 5 PF 40 is currently run in conjunction with a 16 in. normal and SP log. This combination is gradually replacing the regular electric survey (two normals and one lateral) as a standard log in many areas. On the basis of the scheme of Fig. 1 (sharp boundaries between successive zones), the thickness of the low zone may be computed for various amounts of infiltration measured by the ratio of invaded zone diameter to hole diameter D,/d. Referring to Fig. 1, we can set up a material balance for the water displaced from the invaded zone proper and the water present in the low zone. The volume of connate water displaced from invaded zone upon flushing by mud filtrate is: V1 = e p (r2 - r2) ? Sw . where c = bed thickness ? = porosity Su, = original connate water satu-ration. A new technique for the recovery of palladium and platinum and sludge from go12 electrolyte eliminates many of the drawbacks of the zinc-dust cementation process. In the electrolytic refining of gold by the Wohwill method, the electrolyte contains about 100 gpl gold as AuCl, and 100 gpl free hydrochloric acid. Any palladium and platinum contained in impure gold dissolve and accumulate in the electrolyte. When their concentration approaches that of gold, it becomes desirable to discard the electrolyte and to recover the gold and the palladium and platinum. As practiced at Canadian Copper Refiners until recently, discarded electrolyte was treated with sulfur dioxide to precipitate the gold. 2AuCl3 + 6H2O + 3SO2 —2Au + 6HC1 + 3H2SO4 The gold precipitate was filtered off, washed with water, and melted with scrap anodes. The wash water was added to the gold-free filtrate and treated with zinc dust to cement the palladium and platinum. PdCl2 + Zn — Pd + ZnCl2 PtCl4 + 2Zn—Pt + 2ZnCl2 The precipitate was separated and sold as Pd-Pt concentrate, and the barren filtrate and wash water were discarded. The receipts of palladium and platinum at this company were too small to warrant their refining. The process suffered from a number of disadvantages. Handling the gold-free solution was disagreeable, as it was laden with sulfur dioxide even after blowing with air overnight. Subsequent treatment with zinc dust was also troublesome. A large excess of zinc dust was required. Spray, acid mist, and vigorous evolution of hydrogen accompanied the reaction. The Pd-Pt precipitate was grossly contaminated with occluded unreacted zinc and with yellow granules of sulfur, thought to be formed by the reduction of sulfur dioxide and its derivatives. Repeated boiling of the precipitate with hydrochloric acid and washing with water decreased somewhat, but did not eliminate, the zinc. After drying overnight, the precipitate hardened to a clinkerlike mass that was difficult to grind. Grinding, handling, and packing created heavy dusting. Even weighing in an analytical balance generated dust, indicating that the powder was easily charged with static electricity. The total palladium and platinum content of the powder varied from 56 to 72 pct, with an average of 65 pct. The powder dissolved in aqua regia with difficulty, leaving a small amount of insoluble residue. However, the main drawback of the process was the strongly hygroscopic Pd-Pt product. The powder showed a marked though erratic increase in weight and a corresponding decrease in assay on exposure to air, even during the course of laboratory analysis. Such changes were the source of disagreement between Canadian Copper Refiners and the buyers of concentrate. The cause of the change in weight is believed to be hydrogen, liberated by the action of zinc dust on hydrochloric acid. Some of this hydrogen was adsorbed so strongly by the precipitate that it could not be driven off during the drying. On exposure to air it oxidized catalytically, forming water. Experiments soon showed that the entire process of treatment of discarded electrolyte then in use would have to be changed. A small quantity of apparatus was moved into the gold room, and experimentation was held to a minimum compatible with the development of a new process. PALLADIUM AND PLATINUM PRECIPITATION It was thought that zinc could be replaced with a reagent other than a hydrogen-evolving metal. Semiquantitative experiments showed that platinum and palladium could be precipitated completely from the gold-free solutions with such well-known reagents as sodium formate, formic acid, formaldehyde, and paraformaldehyde. Sodium formate was the preferred reagent, since the other three are volatile and somewhat toxic. The gold-free solutions used were those saturated with sulfur dioxide, partly freed of sulfur dioxide by aerating overnight, completely freed by boiling, as well as strongly and weakly acidic, neutral, and alkaline solutions. The reactions are complex and can be represented by these over-all equations: PdC1, + HCOONa — Pd + NaCl + HC1 + Co2 PtCl4 + 2HCOONa — Pt + 2NaCl + 2HC1 + 2CCX, Strongly acidic solutions required as much as five times the theoretical amount of sodium formate as did solutions neutralized to pH 4.5. The recent research with which this paper deals has been concerned with the preparation of pure PbTe crystals suitable for control of radiative processes and othe.v electronic applications. The research has been directed toward the developrnent of methods for the preparation of puve, homogeneous, loul-ca,wier-density PbTe crystals suitable for use in the fabrication of optically pumped and electrically pumped diode lasers. Steps in the preparation of the crystals include 1) purification of the starting materials, 2) synthesis and purification of the PbTe, 3) growoth of PbTe crystals, and 4) adjustt~zertt of composition of the crystals This Paper describes the general preparation procedure employed and discusses some investigntiotzs of purification processes. THE as-received lead and tellurium are nominally 99.999 to 99.9999 pct pure. Assays furnished by the suppliers, obtained by emission spectrographic analysis, show only the presence of about 2 ppm Mg in the tellurium. Such analyses are not very informative, however, since they give no information on the concentrations of normally gaseous impurity elements such as oxygen. Both the lead and the tellurium in the as-received state usually contain appreciable concentrations of oxygen—primarily in the form of oxides on the surfaces of the material. To reduce the oxygen content, the lead is held in the molten state in hydrogen at -700°C for several hours. For this treatment, the lead is contained in a graphite boat which is rf-heated, and the hydrogen is passed through a liquid-nitrogen trap prior to use. Tellurium is subjected to multiple distillation in hydrogen to remove oxygen and other foreign impurities. If, in conducting the distillation, approximately the last 10 pct of the charge at each "stage" is left as the discard cut, purification of the tellurium proceeds as indicated in Fig. 1.l Tellurium used in this work has been distilled two or three times to reduce carrier concentration to about 10" per cu cm. The PbTe is prepared from the purified elements by reacting them in the molten state in sealed, evacuated, or hydrogen-filled silica ampoules. The charge is usually held above the melting point of PbTe (923°C) at 1000 C for 24 hr to ensure that it has been homogenized. Two methods have been employed for the growth of the required single crystals of PbTe: growth from the melt, which will be discussed first, and growth from the vapor phase. Large single crystals of p-type PbTe can be grown readily from the melt by the Bridgman method. For this method of crystal growth, the PbTe is synthesized in situ from proper proportions of the purified elements. Growth (dropping) rates in the range 1.3 to 6.5 mm per hr are employed. Material near the maximum melting composition (about 50.012 at. pct Te) is utilized to avoid composition change on freezing, and thus to obtain crystals of nearly uniform composition. Crystals prepared by use of procedures described up to this point were sufficiently pure and perfect that they could be used for the preparation of laser crystals in studies at Lincoln Laboratory.2-5 ADJUSTMENT OF COMPOSITION Good n-type crystals of PbTe cannot readily be grown from the melt. Further, growth from the melt of crystals of any compositions (n or p type) other than those near the maximum melting composition is difficult because of the large composition changes that must occur on freezing.&apos;" However, melt-grown crystals can rapidly be brought to other desired compositions by isothermal equilibration through the vapor phase with a two-phase Pb-Te stock material, essentially as described by Brebrick and Allgaier.1 The work to be discussed has been concerned with the preparation of n-type crystals; thus, the two-phase stock which was employed contained excess lead, and all ensuing discussion is of the preparation and properties of n-type crystals. The equilibration was designed to the shift composition to the lead-rich limit of stability at the selected temperature. Initial treatment of the crystals at high temperature was employed to minimize the total time required for the equilibration. Final adjustments of the composition and state of the crystals were made by use of low-temperature heat treatment at temperatures in the range 200" to

The activity of sulfur was determined as a function of composition of ferrous sulfide by equilibrating with hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen gas mixtures at 670° , 800°, and 900". The present results supplement the available data over the composition range from 36.6 to 39.5 pct S. The X-ray lattice spacing measurements made are in accord with the available data and indicate that the limiting composition FeSl.008 may be taken for the iron-iron sulfide equilibrium. The growth rate of ferrous sulfide on iron was measured by reacting iron strips or blocks in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen gas mixtures. Owing to the slow approach to equilibrium between the gas phase and the surface of the sulfide layer, The sulfidation experiments were carried out for several days. It is shown that the growth rate ullimately proceeds in accordance wilh the parabolic rate law. From the parabolic rate constants and the thermodynamic data on iron sulfide the self-difiusivity and chemical diffusivity of iron in ferrous bisulfide are evalualed. The self-diffusivity of iron thus derived zs found to increase with increasing sulfur content. THE ferrous sulfide known as "pyrrhotite" is a non-stoichiometric phase having a wide composition range from about 50 to about 58 or 60 at. pct, depending on the sulfur activity. RosenQvistl studied the thermodynamics of this phase over wide ranges of temperature and composition. Hauffe and Rahmel&apos; and Meussner and ~irchenall~ studied the parabolic rate of sulfidation of iron in sulfur vapor. By using markers, these investigators showed that the iron cations were the predominant diffusing species in iron sulfide. This is confirmed decisively by the self-diffusivity measurements of condit4 who showed that the self-diffusivity of sulfur in ferrous sulfide is several orders of magnitude lower than the self-diffusivity of iron. Although much has been learned from these studies about the Fe-S system, further research on this subject was considered desirable for better understanding of the physical chemistry of iron sulfide. This work was confined to the study of the kinetics of sulfidation of iron in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen gas mixtures. The results of this study are given in two consecutive parts. Part I, the present paper, is on the parabolic rate of sulfidation of iron and the diffusivity of iron in ferrous sulfide. The second paper, Part 11, is on the kinetics of the surface reaction between hydrogen sulfide and ferrous sulfide. About 1 g of iron powder or foil. contained in a small recrystallized alumina crucible ind suspended from a calibrated silica spring, was reacted with a hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen mixture of known ratio until no further change in weight was observed. %hen the gas composition was changed and the new state of equilibrium was established after several hours of reaction time. The composition of the sulfide was obtained from the initial weight of the sample and the weight after equilibration. X-Ray Studies. The lattice parameters of some of the equilibrated samples were determined using the General Electric XRD-5 diffractometer with a cobalt tube (no filter) set at 40 kv apd 10 ma; the CoK, radiation was taken as 1.79020A. Observed 220 and 311 diffraction peaks of silicon served as an internal comparison standard to correct for possible misalignment of the goniometer. The lattice parameters of the sulfide phase were calculated from the corrected Bragg angles of the 110 and 102 peaks. Rate Studies. In the initial experiments attempts were made to measure the parabolic rate of sulfidation by measuring the gain in weight of a thin iron strip, -0.05 cm thick, suspended from a silica spring in the reacting atmosphere. The preliminary experiments showed that this technique was not reliable for the measurement of the parabolic growth rate of the iron sulfide layer. In the subsequent experiments the data on growth rate were obtained by measuring, on a microscope stage, change in the thickness of the sample after reaction for a specified time in a hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen mixture of known sulfur activity. For each reaction time a new sample was used. Precision-machined iron blocks, 0.5 by 2 by 5 cu cm, were de-greased and annealed in hydrogen for several hours prior to the sulfidation rate measurements. The experiments were carried out at 670°, 800°, and 900°C in gas mixtures having the ratios, and 1.0 for periods of times from a few hours up to 8 days. Apparatus and Materials. A vertical globar tube furnace with a 3-in.-long uniform temperature zone was used. The glass tube fittings were fused on the zircon reaction tube, 1.5 in. diam. The temperature was measured with a Pt-10 pct Rh/Pt thermocouple placed in the hot zone of the furnace inside the reaction tube (an alumina thermocouple sheath was used). A separate thermocouple was used for the temperature controller which maintained the furnace temperature constant within about 2°C. Anhydrous liquid hydrogen sulfide and oxygen-free dry hydrogen from gas tanks were used in preparing the gas mixtures by the constant head capillary flow-meters. In all cases volume flow rate was 1000 cu cm per min at stp, corresponding to a linear velocity of about 6 cm per sec at 800°C; under these conditions

E. A. Steigerwald (Thompson Ramo Wooldridge, Inc.1— he authors&apos; results clearly indicate that cracking can be produced by the hydrogen pressure developed during a charging operation. This type of cracking or blistering has also been observed in polycrystalline materials24"28 when the charging conditions are sufficiently severe and is often referred to as irreversible embrittlement since it cannot be removed by a baking treatment. There are additional data, however, which must be considered before a pressure theory can be generally employed to account for all failures which occur as a result of hydrogen. In many cases, hydrogen embrittlement in a tensile test or in delayed failures under static loads is a reversible phenomena which cannot be simply explained on the basis of preexisting cracks generated by the charging operation. It is this aspect of the problem which has prompted many investigators to seek mechanisms other than hydrogen pressure to explain their results.24&apos;n728 Fig. 15 indicates an example where, under specific experimental circumstances, hydrogen embrittlement can occur at liquid nitrogen temperatures. In this case, which has been previously decribed,&apos;&apos; specimens were charged with varying quantities of hydrogen, immediately quenched, and tested in liquid nitrogen (-320°F). A companion set of identical specimens were charged, aged at 300°F to remove the hydrogen, and also tested at -320°F. When the current density was greater than lo-&apos; amp per sq in., embrittlekent occurred in both sets of specimens, indicating that cracking had occurred during charging and the embrittlement, as in the case of Fe-Si single crystals, was irreversible. At current densities between approximately 103 and lo-&apos; amp per sq in, the embrittlement was present only for those specimens which contained hydrogen during the testing sequence. The embrittlement was therefore reversible with respect to the aging and charging operations. Since extensive hydrogen movement would not be expected at -320°F, it is difficult to reconcile these data with a mechanism which requires pressure and pressure dependent growth of preexisting cracks. There are other features of hydrogen embrittlement such as the reversibility of the incubation time for delayed failure with respect to applied stressg0 and the influence of prestraining31 which are also difficult to explain using a pressure model. Any general mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement will have to consider the reversible aspects of the embrittlement data as well as the irreversible portion which has been clearly presented for the Fe-Si crystals and which is consistent with a pressure model. A. S. Tetelman and W. D. Robertson (authors&apos; reply)—he authors agree with Dr. Steigerwald that a general mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement must be applicable in all cases where embrittlement occurs. Dr. Steigerwald&apos;s experiments were performed on an iron alloy which has an extremely complex microstructure, and therefore does not lend itself to the direct and detailed observations that can be made in Fe-Si. The change in the characteristics of cracks as a consequence of annealing at 300°F is not really known in detail but it is probable that stress-relaxation (blunting) occurs, dislocations produced near the crack tips will be pinned by carbon atoms, and hydrogen will be lost to the atmosphere. Any, or all of these effects of annealing will alter the ease with which a crack subsequently propagates under applied stress. A quantitative treatment of the problem must take these effects into account. Since diffusional processes are presumably eliminated at -320°F, the general mechanism proposed by Dr. Steigerwald&apos;s colleagues cannot be operative at this temperature. A detailed discussion of the general&apos; inapplicability of this mechanism has been presented elsewhere. However, the data presented by Dr. Steigerwald in his discussion can be explained in terms of a pressure model. Crack propagation under internal pressure P and applied stress occurs when where is the total energy expended in creating new surface area and by plastic work at the crack tip. The total crack length increases with increasing current density, since we have shown that it systematically increases with hydrogen concentration and Dr. Steigerwald has shown that hydrogen concentration increases with current density. For large L (high current density) Eq. [I] can be satisfied even if P = 0 and the embrittlement process does not require the presence of hydrogen. Measurements have been made of the thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity of two specimens of 0.005-cm (2-mil) Be-Cufoil over the temperature range -140° to +200°C. The thermal cmductivity of Be-Cu Alloy 125 was found to be significantly higher than that of Alloy 25, which had a higher impurity content. The thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity values obtained were in concordance with the Smith and Palmer relation for copper alloys which states that ? = 0.0239 (T/p) + 0.075 where A is thermal conductivity (W cm-&apos; deg-&apos;), p is electrical resistivity (microhm-cm), and T is absolute temperature (OK) , indicating that the Smith and Palmer relation can be used to predict the thermal conductivity of this type of Be-Cu alloy over the temperature range -140" to + 200°C to within an accuracy suitable for most engineering applications. THE National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., requested the National Bureau of Standards to measure the thermal conductivity of 0.005-cm Be-Cu foil which was to be used to fabricate antennae for use in Radio Astronomy Explorer space craft. It was felt that measurements had to be made on the actual antenna material, rather than on a thick bar of similar material, since the cold-working and age-hardening properties of the alloy would make it very difficult, if not impossible, to place a thick bar in the same metallurgical state as the 0.005-cm material. As discussed in Section 111 of this paper, the thermal conductivity of many copper alloys can be computed rather accurately from electrical resistivity data using an empirical relation developed by Smith and palmer&apos; and further confirmed by owell.&apos; However, there has been very little work done on correlating thermal and electrical conductivities on Be-Cu alloys. We were reluctant to assume the validity of the Smith-Palmer relation on Be-Cu alloys because of the very large mass difference between beryllium and copper. As will be seen, however, our experimental results indicate that the Smith-Palmer relation is valid for the two alloys on which we made measurements. I) DESCRIPTION OF SAMPLES Samples of Be-Cu Alloy 25 and Be-Cu Alloy 125 were furnished to NBS in the form of rolled strip material, 0.005 cm thick by 5.08 cm wide. The Be-Cu Alloy 25 was purchased by NBS in the form of a continuous length of flat strip. The Be-Cu Alloy 125 was furnished to NBS by Goddard Space Flight Center in the form of two lengths of strip that had been formed into "tubing" of about 1.2 cm diam, with one side of the strip overlapping (but not connected to) the other side by about 90 deg. This "tubing" had been opened up to be flat and then rolled onto spools of about 3 cm diam. When unrolled, the strip would spring back into tubular form. Samples of both of the Be-Cu alloys were chemically analyzed by the NBS Analytical Chemistry Division. The beryllium content was determined quantitatively by the phosphate-gravimetric method to be 1.83 wt pct for Alloy 25 and 1.80 wt pct for Alloy 125. The two alloys were also examined by a general qualitative spectrochemical method for metallic elements. The Alloy 25 specimen contained between 0.1 and 1.0 wt pct Al, Co, Fe, and Si and between 0.01 and 0.1 pct Ni. The Alloy 125 specimen contained between 0.1 and 1.0 pct Co and between 0.01 and 0.1 pct Al, Fe, and Si. Other metallic elements present were in amounts less than 0.01 pct. The NBS Engineering Metallurgy Section measured the tensile strength, elongation, and Knoop hardness of both the Be-Cu Alloy 25 and the Be-Cu Alloy 125. These are given in Table I. The NBS Engineering Metallurgy Section also prepared photomicrographs of the two alloys; these are shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

It has been shown by various investigators that during constant stress creep the dependence of minimum creep rate, 6,, on stress, o, is given by em = A onat low stress levels, md by 6, = A&apos; exp [ß s] at high stress levels. In these relations A, n, A&apos;, and ß are constant at constant temperature. A single relation has been found which satisfies conditions for both high and low stresses and agrees well with experimental results. This relation is 2, = AN (sinh a s)n, where A" is a constant at constunt temperature and a = p/n. This relation also satisfies the linear relation, 6, = k s, found at temperatures near the melting point at low stresses. EXPERIMENTAL creep results have led to a number of empirical relationships between minimum creep rate, 6,, and the applied stress, s. Under conditions of constant stress it is generally found that at low-stress levels,&apos;-&apos; the dependence of minimum creep rate is given by 6, = Asn. At high-stress levels&apos;74 the experimental results fit the relation, 6, = A&apos; exp [po l. In these relations A, n, A&apos; and ß are constant at constant temperature. A model based on climb-of-edge dislocations from a pile-up array leads to a relation similar to that found experimentally at low stresses.&apos; On the other hand. theories based on chemical-reaction rate,5 nonconservatively moving dislocation jogs, and jog migration and climb-of-edge dislocations4 lead to a relation similar to that found experimentally at high stresses. No difference in mechanism between low and high stress levels has been clearly defined; it is questionable whether such a difference really exists. In any event, the major argument usually given in substantiation of a change in mechanism from low to high stresses is that no single relation exists for defining the stress dependence of the creep rate over wide ranges in stress. However, such a relation has been found and is of the form, dm = A" (sinh a s)n, where A" is a constant at con- stant temperature and a = ß/n. This relation agrees well with experimental results over wide ranges in stress and temperature for copper, aluminum, an A1-3.1 pct Mg alloy, and an austenitic stainless steel. STRESS DEPENDENCE OF MINIMUM CREEP RATE At low stress levels the minimum creep rate, gm, depends on the stress, 0, under conditions of constant stress creep through the relation em=Aon [1] The quantities A and n have been defined previously. In the range in which this relation applies, a linear dependence is found in a log em,-log o plot. Above the stress range of application of relation [I], the minimum creep rate increases much mar; rapidly than predicted by relation [I]. This behavior is shown in Fig. 1 for a series of creep tests on copper4 at various temperatures ranging from 673 o to 973°K. Relation [I] is satisfied at the lower stresses, although the results at 973°K are quite limited. In all cases the transition beyond the applicable range of relation [I] is a gradual one indicating no abrupt change in mechanism. For all test temperatures, values of n have been determined from the results in Fig. 1. These are reported in Table I under Alog tm/hlog o. At high stress levels the stress dependence of minimum creep rate under conditions of constant stress is given by im = A&apos; exp [ß a] 2] All factors have been defined previously. In a log em-0 plot, relation [2] predicts a linear function. Experimentally, a pronounced deviation from the prediction of relation [2] is found at lower stresses. As the stress is lowered, the minimum creep rate decreases more rapidly than predicted by relation [2]. This shown for copper in Fig. 2. Again it is found that the transition from high to low stresses is gradual and no really sharp change is found. Values of p determined from the high stress results are given in Table I. IT seems to be in the nature of concepts that they have many meanings, and that the meaning best reflecting the primary interests of a person tends to be accepted by him as the normal meaning of the concept. The concept of ore reserves is no exception, for there is no unanimity of meaning among the several groups of us who are interested in ore reserves, nor even among the individuals of a single group. The groups most interested in ore reserves would seem to include at least the mining industry, perhaps State taxing agencies, and the Federal Government in all its diversified activities, and I would include also the citizenry at large or at least that part of it that consciously thinks about problems-of national welfare. To each of these, and to different individuals within them, the term reserves represents something different, and the farther away the individual or group gets from physical contact with the ore, the more abstract does his or its concept become. It is something different to the policy maker from what it is to the fact-finder or to the miner.

EFFORTS at smoke abatement date back to the year 1273 in England when a law was passed prohibiting the use of "sea cole." The law was not enforced, so King Edward I, 33 years later, appointed a commission "to enquire of all such who burnt sea cole in the city or parts adjoining, and to punish them for first offense with great fines and ransomes, and for the second offense to demolish their furnaces." Many other commissions have since been named to investigate the smoke problem in England, but it still persists in many British cities. In the United States the movement to abate the smoke nuisance started in certain Middle Western cities, and has made considerable progress. Until recently, the coal-producing industry co-operated little in smoke¬abatement programs, taking the attitude that smoke elimination is the dealer&apos;s or user&apos;s responsibility; and the dealers, in turn placed the responsibility entirely on the user.
