IN attacking the problems of mining and treating large disseminated copper orebodies such as those occurring in the Miami or the Ray district of Arizona, one of the vital questions to be decided is, "What is the value of the orebody per ton in place?", The importance of this question lies in the fact that its answer helps to reach a decision concerning the method of mining to be employed. Let it be assumed for the moment that milling and smelting practice, especially the latter, is more or less standardized; and has a cost incapable of much variation, while the cost of mining has a considerable range owing to the large number of mining methods by which a mine may be exploited. For instance, a method may be adopted whereby all the available ore can be extracted perfectly clean (i.e., unmixed with barren material) at a relatively high cost; or a method may be used involving the necessary dilution of a portion of the ore with waste, in order to recover that portion, thus giving a relatively poorer extraction but nevertheless a lower working cost than the former method. Naturally, between these two extremes there lie intermediate methods. In order to arrive at a solution of a mining method problem that is of any value, it is necessary that accurate and complete estimates of mining, milling, and smelting performances and costs shall be established. By way of illustration is given a, case of mining, by the system of undercutting and caving, a large orebody with an average content of 1.50 per cent. copper supposedly all in sulphide form, to which case has been applied those results in mining operations which one may fairly assume are to be expected when viewed in the light of G. R. Lehman's ore-drawing experiments, which form the subject of a paper to be presented at this meeting. It is assumed that the total. costs will be as shown in the following table:

In the mid-1950s the importation of foreign oil began to encroach on traditional coal markets such as railroad steam engine fuel, home heating, electrical generating plants, and others. Many of the smaller coal companies with substantial coal reserves subsequently found that they could no longer continue to mine economically and merged in various ways with larger established coal mining concerns. As the seats of top management and authority were removed from the mines to large metro centers such as New York, Pittsburgh, and Chicago, the more personal relationship between mine workers and management that had existed prior to these mergers began to be eroded and replaced by "remote control" mine management. The disappearance of this face-to-face contact of upper management with mine employees tended to create barriers blocking simple effective communications between coal mine management and labor. In examining the human relations aspects of the coal mining industry, many elements, some concerned with work and others not, have depicted the industry as almost devoid of good applied human relations and communications practices, and, in truth, little has been done to alleviate this situation. In past years many coal producing companies, with the exception of one of the largest, failed to adequately define the term "communications ' as it applied to their companies, whether internally or externally. Internally many still place heavy reliance on written communications such as company-wide newspapers to do the job of communicating with their employees which they feel ought to be done. One company puts an inordinate belief in its company "newspaper" as the primary instrument to stimulate its work force into increasing productivity. The dissociation of cupric oxide to cuprous oxide and oxygen was studied with a microbalmce technique at 700" to 750°C. In this temperature range the dissociation pressure of the reaction 2CuO= Cu2O + 1/2 O2 was: The theory of near-equilibriwm reaction rates predicts a linear relationship between reaction rate and the Gibbs free-energy change for small values of AF/RT. This correlation is found to be valid for AF/RT = -0.1 or approximately 200 cal per mole away from equilibrium. THE theory of reaction rates near equilibrium as developed from classical thermodynamics suggests a small range of linear behavior between the overall reaction rate and the free-energy change accompanying the process. The extent of this linear correlation is generally unknown, even to the order of magnitude. The idea of linearity is also found in the formal mathematics of coupled transport phenomena, e.g., chemical diffusion, thermal diffusion, thermoelectricity, and so forth. The linear array of forces and fluxes which leads to various main and cross coefficients is predicated upon linearity between reaction rates and the bulk thermodynamics which govern the process. The general case in reaction kinetics is well-known: the magnitude of the free-energy change does not cor- relate with observed reaction kinetics, irrespective of whether the process occurs by diffusion or chemical reaction or both. The real need is to investigate specific reaction paths near equilibrium in order to learn of the limitations in attempting to correlate reaction rates and thermodynamics. It is the main purpose of this paper to examine the dissociation kinetics of cupric oxide under conditions of known driving force where the dissociation process is likely to occur by chemical reaction. A secondary objective is to obtain equilibrium data for the CuO-Cu20-O2 system. In a prior paper Edmiston and race' investigated reduction kinetics of wustite in H2-H2O gas mixtures. MUCH crude oil, as produced from the well, carries varying amounts of water, which may be present as free water in' globules sufficiently large to settle out, in time, if the fluid is allowed to stand, or as an emulsion formed by myriads of minute water particles, each surrounded and entrapped by a film of oil through which it cannot break under the action of gravity alone. Such an emulsified mixture of oil and water is commonly termed "cut oil." When such an emulsion is subjected, under proper conditions, to the .influence of a high-potential alternating-current field, the minute water particles rupture the enveloping oil films and coalesce into larger water droplets this procedure continuing until all the water is freed into drops of such size that they readily settle out. This action has been photographed by the micro-moving-picture camera; under, the microscope, the breaking-up of the emulsion, as described, is seen to be accomplished in a few seconds. The low power requirements of the process, from records of commercial plants, substantiate the theory that the action is that of a multitude of electrical condensers in series, rather than that of a number of conducting paths. The minute water particles serve as the metallic elements, or plates, of the condensers and the separating oil acts as the dielectric. Such surface charges as the particles may have are removed, and the intervening oil is broken, probably electrically by the voltage and mechanically by the attractive force between adjacent oppositely electrified particles. The principle of breaking up an emulsion under the influence of an alternating electric field was discovered by F. G. Cottrell and Buckner Speed, through experiments conducted, at the University of California, which resulted in a plant being installed on the property of the Lucile Oil Co. in the Coalinga field, California, early in 1909. This plant was able to reduce 14-per cent. emulsion to less than 2-per cent. with commercial success.

In this country, petroleum is a rapidly wasting asset and an occasional appraisal of the amount remaining in the ground is a simple business procedure to safeguard the general welfare and the prosperity of the republic. The rumored danger of failure, in the near future, of the foreign supply on which we depend in constantly increasing amounts makes the immcdiatc review of our available reserves the more imperative. The Director of the U. S. Geological Survey, in March, 1921, requested the American Association of Petroleum Geologists to cooperate in the preparation of new estimates of the oil remaining in the graund. With the members of this cooperative committee, state geologists, regional geologists, oonsulting specialists, and geologists and engineers attached to many companies worked both independently and through subcommittees. The reports for districts, counties, fields, etc., after review by local or state committees, were discussed by the joint cooperative committee in conferences that, in some instances, were attended by the original compilers of estimates for the states or smaller areas. Finally the data were reviewed and the figures revised by the joint cooperative committee, so that the totals given in Table 1 represent the opinion of the committee, which was composed of F. W. DeWolf, W. E. Wrather, Roswell H. Johnsont Wallace A. Pratt, Alexander W. McCoy, Carl H. Beal, C. T. Lupton, G. C. Matson, K. C. Heald, W. T. Thom, Jr., A. E. Fath, Kirtley F. Mather, R. C. G. W. Healy (union Carbide Metals 0.)-The author's paper is a useful contribution to the store of maps of chemical activities of oxides in multi-component slag systems. It is also a good example of the utility of the Gibbs-Schuhmann technique for calculating activities in a system where that of one of the components has been measured. This paper Koh and Caugherty. Because of this nonlinearity, preparation cf suitable standards and/or correction for absorption and enhancement are essential in microanalysis. However, our objection is not the conclusion that Dr. Aaronson has arrived at nor the technique he has used; but only to the foot-note credited to V. Macres. The level of chromium that he was concerned with (less than 3 pet) is so low that the deviation of uncorrected Cr-curve will be negligible. Besides Dr. Aaronson has used chromium intensity from martensite and set it equal the bulk chromium content of the alloy. Using this chromium-intensity as a reference, he has calculated the amount of chromium in the ferrite. This amounts to the same as using an internal standard. Since the chromium content in austenite and ferrite are almost the same, enhancement due to iron in both will be the same and therefore does not need to be corrected. together with the author's recently published one1 on the CaO-FeO-Fe2O3 system will be most helpful to others learning to apply Schuhmann's method, which merits a far wider application than it has received to date and should greatly aid our understanding of equilibria between metal and oxide phases. As shown by okcen" its use may even be extended to sections of systems with any number of oxides. I have some questions as to the selection of equilibrium constants made by Dr. Turkdogan. He has chosen one for the formation of Fez03 from FeO and oxygen which gives Fea3 activities 50 pct higher

During the past eight years, in trying to estimate world consumption of petroleum and related products, the authors have been unable to account for all the supplies available in any one year. There has remained at all times a balance, which at first was thought to represent almost entirely additions to stocks in foreign countries. But as this discrepancy continued year after year-over 148,000,000 bbl. in 1937—it became unreasonable to conclude that corresponding additional foreign storage capacity was continuously being made available. It became therefore clear that the balance in question was due to other causes than to additions to stocks. Last year Mr. A. G. White, Chief Economist of the Petroleum Economics Division of the United States Bureau of Mines, pointed out to one of the authors that an unknown and important factor in consumption of petroleum and related products is to be found in the requirements for military purposes in foreign countries. This paper is the result of Mr. White's timely suggestion. There are no reliable data available either on the storage capacity, and therefore oil stocks, or on the petroleum consumption for military purposes in foreign countries. This information is so closely related to national defense that its divulgation is forbidden. One can therefore but surmise as to these facilities and needs in line with the relative strength of the military land, air and sea forces of the various countries. The authors have assumed many of the component factors that go to make the tables herein presented, such as fuel consumption of fighting ships in relation to tonnage and horsepower, gasoline consumption of air fleets in relation to number of planes, and the consumption of petroleum products by mechanized armies; but in making these assumptions they have availed themselves of the advice and counsel of those whose wide experience in these questions make their views authoritative. In the investigation reported here, calorimetric measurements have been made to determine the heat of formation of the compound AuSb2 and the partial gram-atomic enthalpies of antimony and gold in dilute solution in liquid tin and their enthalpy interaction coefficients. In order to interpret the behavior of antimony and gold in dilute solution in tin, nonzero values are assigned to the energies of bonds between like solute atoms relative to the pure solute state. Sa.mples of the compound AuSb2 were prepared by melting stoichiometric amounts of antimony and gold (99.999 pct pure) in evacuated and sealed Vycor tubes, which were shaken vigorously and quenched in water. The ingots were annealed in evacuated and sealed tubes at approximately 700°K for 2 weeks. Metallo-graphic and X-ray examinations gave no indication of second phases or microsegregation. The samples were added from 273°K to tin-rich solutions in a solution calorimeter1 maintained at 623°K. The calorimeter was calibrated with tin; the heat content of tin, H623°K- H273°K, was taken as 4.08 kcal per g-atom.2 In each calorimetric run at least four additions were made. The total concentration of solutes in the bath at the end of any run did not exceed 1 at. pct. The measured heat effect of an addition was plotted against the average of the atom fractions x of Sb + Au in solution before and after that addition. From this plot the heat effect at infinite dilution h,,, and the composition dependence of the heat effect dh/dx in the composition range 0 < x < 0.01 were obtained. The results for the additions of antimony, mixtures of antimony and gold, and the compound AuSb2 are listed in Table I. The heat effect h on addition of a sample of the compound AuSb2 or a mechanical mixture of antimony and gold at 273°K to a tin-rich solution at 623°K can be expressed as:

THE CHAIRMAN (PERCY G. BECKETT, Globe, Ariz.).-When you are at Miami tomorrow, you will see a very interesting comparison on the surface of the two mining methods that are being employed there largely. In the case of the surface over the Inspiration mining method, you won&apos;t see very much left of the surface. Everything has gone down. In the case right at the line of the Inspiration ground and the Miami, you will see that the surface over the top slicing which the Miami company has been doing in that country has been riding down evenly and uniformly; and it gives a very marked comparison of the two types of mining, and, to a certain extent, of the different degrees of waste dilution. I would ilke to hear from Mr. Maclennan on this subject. F. W. MACLENNAN, Miami, Ariz.-A paper based on percentage extraction by shrinkage stoping is a difficult one to discuss for the reason that it is hard to arrive at extraction figures until a section has been completely mined out. In the Miami mine we are using a method of shrinkage stoping with narrow stopes and pillars. This ore has been completely broken up and we have started in at the far end to draw off the ore mass maintaining the top of the broken ore dipping at an angle of 60° away from the direction in which we are retreating. A very important point I think about drawing a large. mass of ore down at an angle rather than trying to maintain the top of the ore more or less horizontal is that drawing at a steep angle has a tendency to create a horizontal movement in the ore mass as well as the vertical movement of the ore traveling down to the drawing off chutes. I would like to make the following points in connection with the studies of the deformation of NiAl reported in the recent paper by Wasilewski, Butler, and Hanlon. 1) Much of their paper is concerned with demonstrating that slip occurs on either {110)(001) or {100)(001) systems. In their discussion they state "the existence of (001) as the basic slip direction can thus be considered established." This fact was established by the earlier studies of Ball and Smallman.32 Ball and Smallman also concluded that the slip plane was of the type (110) and they showed that cross slip or pencil glide on orthogonal (110) planes could produce macroscopic slip on planes of the (001) zones, e.g., (100). Wasilewski et al. refer to this paper by Ball and Smallman but not in connection with the slip system determinations. 2) Wasilewski et a!. eliminate the possibility of (111) slip in NiAl on dubious grounds. Their statement that (&apos;the very high yield strengths of the (100) oriented crystals", in which (001) slip is constrained, "immediately ruled out the possibility of {110)(111) slip" cannot be accepted unequivocably; it would be reasonable if the crystals were completely brittle but they are not, as Wasilewski et al. and others33734 have shown. Their elimination of the possibility of (111) slip in a crystal compressed along [227] is misleading since there is no obvious reason why (111) slip should occur in a crystal of this orientation. In fact, from an analysis of the macroscopic surface markings on deformed (100) stoichiometric crystals, Pascoe and Newey34 have deduced that slip occurs on systems of the type {211)(111) and {321)(111). 3) Polycrystalline NiAl is known to undergo general deformati~n.Having emphasized that general deformation is impossible if only (100) slip occurs, it is a pity that Wasilewski et al. do not attempt to account for the disagreement between theory and their experimental results. Of course, (111) slip can provide the additional independent systems required for general deformation.

INTEREST in the reserves of phosphate rock in the United States and their proper conservation has recently been aroused by hearings held in different parts of the country by the "Joint Committee to investigate the adequacy and use of phosphate resources of the United States." This committee was appointed within a few days after a Presidential message to Congress on the same subject, dated May 20, 1938, and began to function almost immediately. Hearings were held in Washington, D. C., Pocatello, Ida., Wilson Dam, Ala., Knoxville, Tenn., and Lakeland, Fla. The resulting testimony, when published, comprised a volume of 1182 pages.1 At the earlier hearings held in Washington and Idaho the seeming disparity between the great reserves of the West and the smaller reserves in the East led to some suggestions as to the desirability of curtailing or even prohibiting the exportation of phosphate rock so that eastern producers, becoming alarmed, cooperated in making available for the use of the committee information hitherto closely guarded. This information has provided an opportunity for new studies by official agencies, for a restatement of the reserves of Florida and Tennessee, and for some modification of figures for the Western States. The writer, representing the Federal Geological Survey, was given free access to the Florida material and has prepared for publication a report,2 some features of which are summarized in this paper. The Tennessee material was studied by Dr. G. I. Whitlatch,3 of the Tennessee Division of Geology. Prof. J. Stewart Williams,4 of the Utah State Agricultural College at Logan, has published a recent study of the phosphate resources of Utah and the writer has given some further study to reserves of western phosphate from the viewpoint of including material of lower grade than that hitherto considered. "Quickclay is an extreme case, it is by far the most mobile of all the common solid materials on the earth&apos;s surface. It has both a high water content and a mineral texture that allows it to flow with the utmost ease. A mass of quickclay that has lain undisturbed for thousands of years can be jarred into motion by any sudden shock." The quotation is from the paper by Kerr called, "Quickclay," which was published in Scientific American in 1963. This was probably the most widely read paper on quickclay ever published. It was reprinted by Fred Betz in his Benchmark collection on Environmental Geology (BM 25), A quickclay is an extremely sensitive soil. The sensitivity parameter is produced by dividing the undisturbed shear strength by the remoulded shear strength. If a value greater than 50 is obtained, then the soil can be classified as a quickclay. True quickclays are characterized by a very low remoulded strength of the order of 0.5 kPa. The classic quickclays are found in Scandinavia and Eastern Canada, but the 1964 Alaska earthquake revealed a considerable quick¬clay deposit underlying the town of Anchorage. This was discussed in a classic paper by Kerr and Drew in Engineering Geology in 1967. The Kerr views on quickclays were perhaps most clearly expressed in the paper with Liebling in Geol. Soc. Amer. Bull. in 1965. They suggested that the major critical conditions which contribute to quickclay movement are: substantial quantities of layer lattice silicates of colloidal size (about 40% or more by dry weight), sub¬stantial pore water (44%), a reduction in electrolyte concentration below 5 g/l of salt, and addition of a dispersant. There is still discussion and disagreement about the nature of quickclays and the mechanisms of quickclay slides; the "clay mineral"-based views favored by Kerr still find support, although an alternative "primary mineral" view suggests that it is the finely ground primary minerals

W. G. BURGERS*—It seems almost certain that this investigation shows the way which finally, when more analogous data have been obtained, must lead to the understanding of many features of preferential growth-directions of crystals and of the occurrence of recrystallization textures. In this connection I should like to mention that Mr. Tiedema in my laboratory succeeded in developing an analogous method for preparing crystals in aluminum plates with a chosen crystal-lographic plane and direction parallel to the surface of the plate (to be published in Cryst. Ada). If such crystals were grown in high purity aluminum and test-pieces containing a few crystals such as the authors describe were prepared for this metal, it might be possible that due to the absence of growth obstructing particles, even in this low-melting point metal boundary displacements approaching equilibrium positions might be realized. With regard to the apparently marked drop in surface energy for orientation differences approaching zero degree, and orientation differences approaching those existing between twins, it seems of interest to remark that in aluminum a crystal growing at the expense of fine grained material cannot (or can only very reluctantly) absorb grains in either ap- proximately (within 5—10°) parallel or spinel twin orientation (May, Tiedema and Burgers, Nature (1948) 162, 740 and Cryst. Ada in press). Consequently with aluminum the method of preparing a crystal with a definite orientation does not succeed when the new crystal has to absorb its own texture; for example it is not possible to grow in a polycrystalline wire with a [lll]-texture a crystal with a [11 Indirection parallel to the wire axis (Tiedema: Cryst. Ada, in press). Finally I should like to mention the well-known fact (Burgers: Proc. Acad. Amsterdam (1947) 50, 723) that prolonged annealing of recrystallized nickel-iron sheet with cube-texture never succeeds in transforming this into one single crystal of the same orientation; if, by "secondary re-crystallization," large crystals are formed

In the pellet-producing industry it is sometimes claimed that "The pellets are made in the concentrator," or that "The key to good pellets is in the balling operation." However, one claim is generally agreed on: If you can put in, on, and through the indurating furnace a good green ball of Proper size and adequate strength to withstand the handling, load, dehydration, and thermal shock until it is properly heat-hardened, you will have the pellet product you desire-that is, a "competent" green ball. The strength requirements that enable a competent green ball to withstand the environment of the indurating furnace are usually less restrictive than those for transporting the green ball from its source of production to the furnace. Experience has shown that different types of material may have different balling characteristics which may impose limitations on the quality of the green ball that can easily be produced under normal conditions. Therefore, if a specific material will produce a green ball that meets the physical requirements for competency in the furnace, but not for handling or transportation, various practices must be instituted to overcome this deficiency. In other words, if a normal handling system is too rigorous for the green balls that can be produced under standard conditions, then "handling with care" should be tried.

At the present time, oxidized taconite and semitaconite are not processed on the Mesabi Range except in vely limited tonnages. However, it is estimated that by 1990 shipments from the Range will approach 75 million tons of iron ore per year. To achieve this and future production, either additional magnetic taconite reserves must be proven or oxidized taconite and semitaconite must be processed. One beneficiation process which uses high-intensity magnetic separation and flotation for concentrating oxidized taconite and semitaconite is described. Detailed metallurgical results are given and an economic evaluation of the process is presented with comparison to other processes. The results of the present study indicate that the high-intensity magnetic separation and flotation process appears nearer commercialization for the processing of Mesabi Range semitaconite. The disadvantages of the process are nearer solution and are being solved by well-defined programs. During the twentieth century, the Mesabi Range in northeastern Minnesota has been the main source of iron ore for American steel mills. The Mesabi Range, which is about 120 miles long and up to 3 miles wide, is the pre-glacial outcrop of a group of sedimentary iron-bearing rocks known as the Biwabik formation. The formation, which is 200 to 650 ft thick and dips 50 to 10° to the southeast, is divided into four stratigraphic units. From top to bottom, these are the Upper Slaty, Upper Cherty, Lower Slaty, and Lower Cherty. Since its deposition in Precambrian time, most of the original Biwabik formation has been subject to alteration. Thus, although the iron content of the original formation was quite uniform, major variations in mineral composition now occur both laterally along the length of the formation and vertically within its units. Details of the mineralogical variations in the Biwabik formation have been described by Wolff,&apos; Gruner, 2 and White.3 The unaltered portion of the Biwabik formation includes the magnetite taconites which are being commercially processed by Reserve Mining, Erie Mining, Eveleth Taconite, National Steel, Butler Taconite, and U.S. Steel. These six operations have a capacity of 32 million tons of iron ore pellets per year and have produced approximately 170milion tons of pellets since 1956. Capacity for another 30 million tons of pellets per year is being considered by the industry for the next ten years. This increase will be obtained by constructing new plants and by expanding present operations. Thus, by ! 978, it is estimated that approximately 60 million tons of iron ore vellets will be produced each vear from the magnetite taconites of the Biwabik formation. The portions of the Biwabik formation subjected to intense alteration resulted in direct shipping, wash, and heavy-media ores. Since 1892, 1.8 billion tons of direct shipping ore have been shipped from the Mesabi Range. This ore has been the major source of iron ore for American steel mills. In 1967, about 11 million tons of direct shipping ore and 13 million tons of wash, jig, heavy-media, and other gravity concentrates were shipped from the Mesabi Range.4 These products generally have poorer physical and chemical properties than the iron pellets produced from magnetic taconite.
