THE custom milling plant of the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co. is at Sahuarita, Arizona, approximately 20 miles south of Tucson. It is connected by a 2-mile railroad spur to the main line of the Southern Pacific Railroad between Tucson and Nogales. The capacity of the plant is 500 tons per day. The mill is conventional except perhaps in the rather wide variety of ores treated. These vary from straight copper ores, from which only one concentrate is produced, and lead-zinc or copper-zinc ores from which two concentrates are produced, to complex gold-silver-copper-lead-zinc ores, which require the simultaneous production of three or four concentrates. Custom ores are received in lots varying in size from a few truckloads to several carloads. Similar ores, after crushing and sampling, may be commingled, or individual lots may be milled individually. The ores are first dumped either into one of two 200-ton railroad bins, or into one of the two 75-ton truck bins. From these bins the lot of ore is individually crushed in a 24 by 16-in. jaw crusher to 3-in. size, and then to 1/2-in. size in a 3-ft Symons shorthead crusher. After crushing to 1/2-in., the ore is conveyed to the automatic sampling plant. This consists of three Vezin samplers in series, each successively cutting out 10 pct, to pct and 5 pct of its feed. After No. 1 sampler, the material passes through a mixing barrel and is then crushed to 1/4-in. in a set of rolls before passing to No. 2 sampler. Between No. 2 and No. 3 samplers, the ore is again mixed in a mixing barrel. The final sample, consisting of one pound per ton of ore, is taken to the laboratory, where it is further crushed to 1/8-in. in a coffeemill, and then riffled down to the size required for grinding in a pulverizer. The capacity of the crushing and sampling plant is up to too tons per hour, depending upon the character of the ore. After sampling, the ore is stored in five ore-storage bins, consisting of four 200-ton bins and one 175-ton bin. Each of these bins is discharged by means of belt feeders and conveyor to the ball mills, so that ores may be composited for milling in any required ratio, or milled separately by themselves. Fine grinding is done in one 6 by 4-ft Allis-Chalmers ball mill and one 8-ft by 36-in. Hardinge mill. These two mills both discharge to one 54-in. Akins Simplex Highweir classifier. The classifier sands can be returned to either or both mills, so that flexibility in grinding for different ores is easily obtained. Flotation equipment consists of four 66-in. Fagergren machines for copper-lead roughing and six similar machines for zinc roughing. Lead-copper bulk concentrate is cleaned and recleaned in eight No. 18-S Denver machines, and zinc concentrate is cleaned in three 66-in. Fagergrens. Copper-lead differential separation

A criterion is Proposed for the initiation of vertical hydraulic fracturing taking into consideration the three stress fields around the wellbore. These fields arise from (1) nonhydrostatic regional stresses in earth, (2) the difference between the fluid pressure in the wellbore and the formation fluid pressure and (3) the radial fluid flow through porous rock from the wellbore into the formation due to this pressure difference. The wellbore fluid pressure required to initiate a fracture (assuming elastic rock and a smooth wellbore wall) is a function of the porous elastic constants of the rock, the two unequal horizontal principal regional stresses, the tensile strength of the rock and the formation fluid pressure. A constant injection rate will extend the fracture to a point where equilibrium is reached and then, to keep the fracture open, the pressure required is a function of the porous elastic constants of the rock, the component of the regional stress normal to the plane of the fracture, the formation fluid pressure and the dimensions of the crack. The same expression may also be used to estimate the vertical fracture width, provided all other variables are known. The derived equations for the initiation and extension pressures in vertical fracturing may be employed to solve for the two horizontal, regional, principal stresses in the rock. INTRODUCTION Well stimulation by hydraulic fracturing is a common practice today in the petroleum industry. However, this stimulation process is not a guaranteed success; hence, the deep interest shown by the petroleum companies in better understanding the mechanism that brings about rock fracturing, fracture extension and productivity increase. Geologists and mining people became interested in hydraulic fracturing from a different point of view: the method may possibly be employed to determine the magnitude and direction of the principal stresses of great depth. Numerous articles in past years have dealt with the theory of hydraulic fracturing, but they all seem to underestimate the effect of stresses around the wellbore due to penetration of some of the injected fluid into the porous formation.1-4 Excellent papers on stresses in porous materials due to fluid flow have been published5,6 but no real attempt has been made to show the effect of these stresses in the form of a more complete criterion for vertical hydraulic fracturing initiation and extension. This paper is such an attempt. ASSUMPTIONS It is assumed that rock in the oil-bearing formation is elastic, porous, isotropic and homogeneous. The formation is under a nonhydrostatic state of regional stress with one of the principal regional stresses acting parallel to the vertical axis of the wellbore. This assumption is justified in areas where rock formations do not dip at steep angles and where the surface of the earth is relatively flat. This vertical principal regional stress equals the pressure of the overlying rock, i.e., S33 = —pD, where S33 is the total vertical principal stress (positive for tension), p is average density of the overlying material and D is the depth of the point where S33 is calculated. The wellbore wall in the formation is considered to be smooth and circular in cross-section. The fluid flow through the porous elastic rock obeys Darcy's law. The whole medium is looked upon as an infinitely long cylinder with its axis along the axis of the wellbore. The radius of the cylinder is also very large. Over the range of depth at which the oil-bearing formation occurs, it will be assumed that any horizontal cross-section of the cylinder is subjected to the same stress distribution, and likewise that it will deform in the same manner. The anomalous behavior of hydrogen in iron is examined and a new model is proposed It is postulated that hydrogen single and di-interstitials are in equilibrium with each other. When the binding enthalpy of the di-interstitial, B, is assumed to be about 10 kcal per mole, the predicted temperature dependence of the solubility agrees reasonably well with the reported data. Effective diffusiuity is calculated assuming the di-interstitials to be immobile. Since the number of mobile single interstitials is greatly reduced at lower temperatures, the effective diffusivity is decreased. A good agreement in the temperature dependence of diffusivity between theory and experiment is provided with B - 10 kcal per mole. The predicted diffusivity is also a function of total concentration of hydrogen and this appears to be Partly responsible for the large scatter in the reported data. HYDROGEN is known to form an interstitial solid solution with iron.''' At elevated temperatures, it has been well-established that hydrogen enters iron in the dissociated form and occupies the interstices, and that diffusion of hydrogen in iron is via the interstitial mechanism. The concentration, c, permeability, P, and diffusivity, D, of hydrogen in iron have been separately determined and are consistent with each other under the steady-state condition for temperatures above approximately 400°C; that is, the relationship P = c-D holds. At lower temperatures, however, anomalous behavior of hydrogen in iron has been observed by many investigators. The results of experimental studies4-'' of the diffusion of hydrogen in iron are summarized in Fig. 1, in which the values of D are plotted against the reciprocal temperature. Although there is an increasing divergence in observed values of D with decreasing temperature, the values of D at temperatures below approximately 200°C are definitely small as compared with the extrapolation from high-temperature data. The lines shown bracket the region containing the most probable data. The observed values of c6," are plotted against the reciprocal temperature in Fig. 2, where the dashed lines represent Geller and sun's'' most probable isobars at 1 and 100 atm. At high external hydrogen pressure and low temperatures, the values of c observed are higher than those expected from high temperature data. It is generally accepted that certain trapping mechanism is responsible for the anomalies, but the nature of the trapping mechanism has not been clarified. Various types of hydrogen traps were suggested in the literature, such as "rifts" in the lattice dislocations, voids, microcracks, and so forth. However, no quantitative account of the observed behavior has been given in terms of these trapping mechanisms. Formation of methane in hydrogen-charged steel was found by ~odgurski." This appears to explain the existence of the so-called "residual" hydrogen,4 but not the observed anomalies of hydrogen in iron. McNabb and Foster' proposed a mathematical analysis in terms of a trapping mechanism. However, the physical significance of the traps was not clarified. The necessity of evaluating five parameters in their theory made comparison with experiment difficult. In the present paper, a model is proposed in which the anomalous behavior of hydrogen is attributed to the formation of hydrogen di-interstitials at lower temperatures. In this model, it is postulated that single and di-interstitials are in equilibrium with each other. (The hydrogen di-interstitial is to be distinguished from a hydrogen molecule which may exist in voids.) It can then be shown that most of the anomalies can be explained by assuming that the di-interstitials are virtually immobile and that the binding enthalpy of the di-interstitial, B, is approximately 10 kcal per mole. Predictions of the theory agree with the available experimental data reasonably well. THEORY The basic postulate of the present analysis is that single and di-interstitials are in equilibrium with each

Experimentation which measures differences in pressure across the interfaces of immiscible fluids in the interstitial spaces of porous media may be termed "capillary pressure experimentation". In the literature of petroleum technology since 1941 there have appeared twelve papers popularizing capillary pressure concepts and developing applications of these concepts for the solution of problems of practical reservoir engineering importance, such as the determination of connate water, fluid distribution. in transition zones, reservoir rock textural properties, and oil recovery from petroleum reservoirs.' Although a review of the literature would be justified at this time in order to reconcile the conflicting viewpoints which are contained in the cited papers, the object of this note will be of more limited scope. It is believed that the recent paper of Muskat alls sufficient attention to many of the uncertainties which arise upon examination of the published literature. such that until satisfactory counter-proposals can be made it will serve our purpose only to mention some other like uncertainties. This will emphasize further the need confronting petroleum technologists to re. consider and reformulate the application possibilities of capillary pressure experimentation. In particular, I sug- gest that we examine the thesis that capillary pressure experimentation as above defined can lead to measurements reflecting the recovery of oil from petroleum reservoirs, as was proposed first" by Amyx and Yuster" and was first reduced to practice by the experimentation of Welge. In fact. I shall deal exclusively with the Welge papers since it is the principle one on this subject which has appeared to date. I shall attempt to show that the possibility of describing oil recovery features in terms of capillary pressure phenomena has not been established entirely. The Welge paper was a pioneering effort to evaluate this recovery application possibility. P. P. Reichertz' comments on the Welge paper state that non-wetting phase discontinuities are developed occasionally in the Welge experiment, and restate Muskat's argument that discontinuous fluid elements (partially saturating the interstices of porous media which are elsewhere saturated with some other immiscible phase or phases) are not subject to the requirements of hydrostatic equilibrium. It is the purpose of my comment to show that it is unnecessary to make Reichertz' postulation regarding non-wetting phase discontinuities (however valid) when it is desired to criticize welge's theoretical treatment of his problem. It can be shown that Welge's method of measuring values for ''capillary pressure" is invalid in many instances of application, such that his reported curves of capillary pressure Versus fluid saturation often have no physical meaning, even throughout the interval of fluid saturation where it might be otherwise suspected that no phase discontinuities occur. By considering established principles of capillary pressure experimentation it can be shown that the pressure difference experimentally observed between wetting and non-wetting fluid Phases which are contained in external reservoirs will reflect on the capillary pressure difference at the interfaces of contact between these phases only when the following conditions are satisfied: (a) There shall be a balance between the opposing forces of gravity and capillarity, as obtains under conditions of hydrostatic equilibrium when the positions of the interfaces of contact become fixed in pore spaces of certain geometry (b) The wetting and non-wetting fluids within the interstitial spaces shall everywhere be continuous with the external wetting phase reservoir and the external non-wetting phase reservoir, respectively. It will become apparent immediately that in any instance when a greater pressure is recorded in the external wetting phase reservoir than in the external non-wetting phase reservoir, one may establish either that static equilibrium has not been attained or that discontinuities in one or more of the fluids have been developed. This is because the pressure otherwiee is always ereatest in the non-wetting phase at each static interstitial interface of contact with the wetting phase. such that the externally measured pressure in the non-wetting phase likewise must be greatest if the above conditions are to be satisfied.

In the past, other authors.1, 2 have studied the influence of a skin effect on the productivity of a well. This skin effect, expressed by the skin factor S, is considered to be caused by a thin layer of impaired permeability immediately around the wellbore and extending vertically over the whole productive interval penetrated by the well. The skin factor S is defined as follows. Based on this, the impairment in productivity caused by a skin can be expressed by the fractional loss in productivity I, which is the loss in productivity divided by the total unimpaired productivity. For compressible flow in a stabilized well which drains a circular area of radius re, 1 is given by The present paper deals with a different kind of productivity impairment. Consider a well in which part of the productive formation is blocked off completely, either by incomplete penetration or by exclusion of parts of the productive zone by blank casing. In Fig. 1 (A, B and C), three examples are shown. Fig. 1(A) shows the situation where a well only partially penetrates the formation. This often is done to combat the actual or imagined danger of bottom-water coning. Fig. 1(B) shows a well producing from only the central portion of a productive interval. This type of completion is sometimes used where both water and gas coning are a problem. Although the case of a well producing through perforated casing cannot be treated in a manner similar to the previous two cases (where radial flow in the horizontal plane is assumed), Fig. 1(C) shows several intervals open to production and qualitatively describes this case (as will be discussed later). To study the loss in productivity in all these cases, two parameters are introduced which fully determine the impairment. The first is the penetration ratio "b," i.e., the total interval open to fluid entry divided by the total thickness of the productive zone. The second is the ratio hlrw. In this ratio, rw is the wellbore radius. The definition of h is more cumbersome. In Fig. 1(A), h is the thickness of the total productive interval. The streamline configuration for this case of partial penetration is basic to the other two cases considered (Views B and C of Fig. 1). It will be obvious from Fig. i (A) that the flow lines in the uppermost portion of the formation will be essentially horizontal, while those in the lower portion will curve upward toward the well. In Fig. 1(B), with only the middle portion of the zone open to production, the streamline configuration. of the upper half will be an exact mirror image of that in the lower half of the zone. Hence, for the case illustrated in Fig. 1(B), h is defined as one-half the total sand thickness. It follows, then, that in Fig. 1(C) h is one-half the distance between corresponding points in adjacent intervals. (In gun-perforated casing, h would be one-half the distance between perforations.) In a paper by Nisle4 and a paper given by the present authors5, the mathematical theory was developed for the cases under consideration. In the present publication, the emphasis is put on the results of these studies; consequently, the equations derived in Refs. 4 and 5 will be omitted, for the most part. The pressure drop p in a well producing from only a portion of the total formation thickness can, in analogy with Eq. 1, be expressed by Numerical solution of Eq. 5 by use of the IBM 650 leads to the following important conclusions. In conducting a pressure build-up test on an oil well, it is often necessary to shut-in the well for a short time prior to initiation of the test. The effect of such a short tern shut-in on the resulting pressure build-up curve is derived. The derivation is based on the Kelvin point-source solution and is a straight forward extension of the fundarnental theory. The magnitude of the effect is evaluatecl and illustrated by an example. It is shown that if the production subsequent to the short term shut-in is at least 10 times the duration of the shrct-in, the effect will he less than 10 per cent. INTRODUCTION It often happens that before a pressure build-up test can be made an additional valve must be mounted on the wellhead, or on arrival at the well, it might be learned that the well had been shut-in several hours the previous day because of a shortage of tankage. In such cases the question is How will such an interruption of production affect the results of a pressure buildup test This work explains how to take account of such a short term shut-in in order that the test can proceed without further delay. The solution presented here makes use of the Kelvin point-source solution used by Horne1 in his treatment of the pressure build-up in wells. Use is also made of the super-position theorem. MATHEMATICAL DERIVATION The well is assumed to have been in production at a constant rate for a relatively long time (several days or more). It is then shut-in for a short time, after which it is again placed in production at the previous constant rate. It continues to produce at this rate until shut-in for a pressure build-up test. The Kelvin point-source solution is expressed by Eq. 1. The sequence of production rates is listed in Table I. Fox the past fifty years or more, the structural features of the Cordilleran mountain system of western United States have presented some most interesting problems. Any geologist or engineer living in this region, or even making occasional examinations. of the mines, will lose much of interest and importance if he is not familiar with the literature. Some of the greatest works on geology have been the, result of studies carried on in sections of this region. Among the more important of the earlier works are those of Dutton,1. King,2 Gilbert,3 and Powell;4 of the more recent Lindgren,5 Ransome,6 Spurr,7 Butler,8 and others have contributed much. Many of the papers are largely of scientific interest but even these lay the foundation for the commercial application of the broader features of the geology. I have read many of these works with the keenest interest and pleasure; in fact, some have been read until some of the more important findings seem to be my own. In this paper, however, it is my aim to accept credit for little more than the labor of assembling some of the ideas of others. This is done with the hope that an interesting and valuable discussion will be the result. If some of the ideas presented should

Although alloys of copper and silicon were examined several years ago,&apos; and their excellent mechanical properties were shown, it was not until C. B. Jacobs 2 introduced manganese in small quantities to the alloys that they became of commercial importance. A few years ago The American Brass Company took over the patents and commenced to manufacture the alloy under the name "Everdur." The present study of the constitution of the ternary system was undertaken in order to reach a fuller understanding of the behavior of the alloy. Review of Previous WORK on the BinaRy Systems There have been no papers published dealing with the constitution of the ternary system, although some tests of the mechanical properties have been described," which indicate that there is a change in solubility with temperature. Copper-silicon System The copper-silicon system has been studied in detail by the author and is described in two papers published in 1928.V he portion of the diagram up to 8 per cent. silicon, as determined by this research, is reproduced in Fig. 1. The author&apos;s previous papers include a complete review of the work of other investigators and it is not necessary to deal further with this system here. Copper-manganese System The copper-manganese system has been investigated by several workers, notably Lewis,5 Wologdine,6 Sahmen7 and Schemtschuschny,

Situation.—The Camp Bird mine is in Imogene basin† (Fig. 1) at the head-waters of Canon creek, a branch of the Gunnison, in the southern part of Ouray county, Colorado, towards the northern edge of the region known as the San Juan mountains, and about 10 miles W. of the continental divide. It is 8 miles by wagon-road from Ouray, the terminus of a branch of the Rio Grande&apos; Southern railway. The distance from Denver to Ouray is 387 miles by rail. In an air-line, the mine is 190 miles SW. of Denver. The altitude of the town, tunnel and buildings is 11,200 ft., and level No. 2 is 11,500 ft., and No. 1 is 11,670 ft., above sea-level. The lowest point of the lode-ontcrop, which crosses the basin E. and W., has an elevation of 11,850 ft., and that of the highest point, on the divide between Imogene and Tomboy basins, is 13,250 ft. On the eastern slope of the Imogene basin (towards Ironton) the vein is less clearly defined on the surface. In view of the proposed visit of the Institute to Cuba this winter, the following brief sketch of the principal mineral deposits near Santiago de Cuba has been prepared largely from notes taken in February, 1903, during a visit to the mines then in operation in the province of Santiago de Cuba. Westward from Cape Maysi, the most eastern point of the island, the coast is rocky and uninviting. The usual course of the steamers is well in toward the shore, and the lines of stratification of the rocks can be distinguished clearly, the presence of iron or other ores being indicated by frequent blotches of mineral stain. One is impressed with the general rugged character of the southeastern coast-line,—an almost unbroken barrier of coral-limestone bluff&apos;s, full of caves and hollows, into which the surf rushes with a roar and bursts into tall fountains of spray. Beyond rises abruptly the Sierra Maestra range, whose sharp, peaked crest-line betrays its eruptive or igneous origin. From a height of about 800 ft. near Cape Maysi, this range gradually rises to the westward, attaining its maximum elevation of more than 8,300 ft. in the Pico Turquino, beyond Santiago. Fletcher Mill is located in the southern part of the New Lead Belt in Southeastern Missouri, in the northwestern part of Reynolds County. Shaft sinking began in July, 1964. The mill went on stream in February, 1967, and reached the designed rate of 5,000 tons per day in July, 1968. The ore occurs approximately 1,000 feet below the surface as disseminated deposits of galena, sphalerite and chalcopyrite. There is no oxidation within the ore body and dissemination is not fine enough to present liberation problems with a normal grind. Mining is by the room and pillar method with rubber-tired diesel- propelled drilling and loading equipment. The ore is dumped through a 27-inch square grizzly into a 5,000-ton pocket. The underground primary crusher is automatically fed by a vibrating feeder and discharges directly into skip measuring bins. Hoisting is automatic, in balance, with 8. 5-ton skips dumping into a 1,000-ton mill bin. MILL The concentrator is a 5, 000 tons-per-day single section plant equipped to produce lead, zinc and copper concentrates. Contained under 35, 347 square feet of roof, without fine ore storage or remote crushing, and with sufficient automation to be operated by one man, the plant is compact, unique, and efficient in operation. Recently the short-time tensile properties of several high-strength materials have been studied at temperatures up to 3750°F.l This paper deals with stress-rupture and creep properties at the same temperatures. The work was done at the University of California as a portion of the project NRC-548. It was financed by the War Production Board and was supervised by the Office of Production Research and Development. This paper has been released for publication by the latter agency. The following materials were studied, all in the form of 0.040-in. sheet: Alclad 24s-T Alclad 24s-T8I Alclad 24s-T86 Alclad 75s-T R3oI-T (clad) Specimens were loaded in tension in the cross-grain direction. Testing temperatures included 94°F., 2II°F., 300°F., and 375°F. Stress levels were selected to cause rupture in times ranging from several minutes to 1000 hr. In each test the following data were obtained: (I) fracture time, (2) elongation at fracture, (3) the complete strain-versus-time curve (creep curve), (4) creep rate (defined in a later section). The activity of zinc in dilute liquid lead alloys containing small additions of silver and gold has been measured using a multielectrode galvanic cell with a fused chloride salt electrolyte. The range of temperatures studied in the Pb-Zn-Ag system was 550" to 670°C and in the Pb-Zn-Au system was 680" to 800°C. Mining geology has a threefold objective: to guide prospecting for new ore, to evaluate known orebodies as development risks, and to supply the detailed knowledge of ore structures necessary for more economical extraction. The role of geology in exploration is well established. This article will deal solely with orebody evaluation and the application of geology to development and mining problems as practiced by St. Joseph Lead Co. in the southeast Missouri district, which for many years has supplied approximately 30 pct of U. S. lead production. The primary concern of the present discussion is geology in the district, not geology of the district. The southeast Missouri district, locally called the Lead Belt, includes parts of St. Francois, Madison, and Washington counties. The first recorded mining was about 1720 at Mine La Motte in Madison County on surface showings of lead ore. Later discoveries near Bonne Terre, twenty-five miles to the north, led to extensive prospecting and underground mining. To date the district has yielded well over 8 million tons of pig lead, valued at more than $1 billion. By far the greater part of the lead production has come from an area of 50 sq miles, centering Fig. 1-Central portion of southeast Missouri on the city of Flat River, as shown in Fig. 1.

This is the thirteenth paper of a series from the laboratories of the Aluminurrl Company of America presenting the results of investigations of equilibrium relations in aluminum-base alloys prepared from electro-lytically refined aluminum. The ninth paper, on The Constitution of High-purity Aluminum-titanium Alloys,&apos; presented a type of system that had not previously been encountered in aluminum alloys. Subsequent work has shown that there are several similar binary aluminum diagrams including that of aluminum and chromium. The present investigation was limited to the cxtreme alnminum end of the aluminum-chromium system. The first systematic investigation of the aluminum-chromium equilibrium diagram was carried out by Hindrichs.? The resulting equilibrium diagram with some imaginary additions suggested by Guillet3 is shown in Fig. 1. Recently Goto and D6gane4 investigated the constitution of aluminum alloys containing up to 32 per cent chromium, and presented the diagram that is reproduced in Fig. 2. Wide discrepancies in the two diagrams are evident. INTRODUCTION Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, and its subsidiary companies, operate and manage mining, beneficiation, and pelletizing operations in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the province of Ontario, Canada, and the State of Western Australia, Australia. The concentrates and natural ores vary mineralogically, physically and chemically. This paper describes the techniques employed in pelletizing the various concentrates and ore fines. The plant operations described are the Republic, Humboldt, Tilden, Empire and Pioneer in Michigan, the Adams and Sherman in Ontario, and the Robe River in Western Australia. Table 1 contains further details regarding design and operating capacities, commissioning dates, and participant ownerships. Allis-Chalmers grate-kiln systems are utilized in Michigan and Ontario, and Dravo straight-grate systems in Western Australia. Currently, the Empire and Tilden operations are being expanded. At Empire the additional pelletizing unit, identified as Unit IV, will have a design capacity of 8 996 metric tonne/d and is scheduled for startup May 1, 1979. The Tilden operation is being doubled with the additional pelletizing unit, identified as Unit 11, having a de- sign capacity of 12 599 metric tonne/d. Startup is scheduled for January 1, 1980. THE INFORMATION AVAILABLE on the rolling characteristics of the precious metals-gold, silver, the platinum metals and their alloys-is incomplete and mostly from scattered sources. In the present paper an effort has been made to assemble and correlate it and to fill in some of the gaps that exist. GENERAL ROLLING CHARACTERISTICS SOME EFFECTS OF IMPURITIES Gold and its alloys are generally considered to be hot short and hence are usually rolled cold. Cold rolling of the yellow, green, and pink gold alloys. Which customarily contain gold, silver, copper and zinc and frequently some nickel as well, introduces no new problems since reasonable reductions are quite feasible and the alloys show little tendency to fire crack in subsequent annealing. The white gold alloys. which usually contain little or no silver and 10 pct or more nickel, are very susceptible to fire cracking1 and hence wrist he given relatively heavy reductions, i. e., 8-10 pct or more per pass with a total reduction of about 50 pct between anneals, to minimize this tendency. In addition, it is preferable to keep the bar as flat as possible during rolling. Although no comprehensive study appears to have been made of the effects of impurities on the cold rolling characteristics of gold alloys, the observations of Nowack2 on the effects of small
