Beginning with a joint session on engineering research and production engineering, Tuesday afternoon, conducted by E. A. Stephenson and H. C. Fowler, problems of petroleum technology, domestic and foreign production, proved oil re- serves, economics, and stabilization were mooied almost without interruption until nearly everyone was "talked out,' and the meeting was adjourned at the end of the annual Petroleum Division dinner, late Thursday night.

COPPER operations in the Congo mean the operations of the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga, because there are no other copper industries there. There is a mine at Bwana M'Kubwa, a little way to the South, in Rhodesia, which has been operated on a small scale, and-another farther south, the Falcon mine, but in quite a different section of the country. This Bwana M'Kubwa mine has recently been reorganized financially and the Minerals Separation interests have taken an extensive share in it, so that it may come into operation. The Union Miniere's operations are in Katanga, the most southeastern province of the Belgian Congo, and the company's concession is in the southeastern part of that province. The usual route for going into the country is by way of Cape Town, thence over the South African Railways through Kimberly and Mafe- king to Bulawayo, then by the Beira, Mashonland and Rhodesia Railways to the Rhodesia-Congo border, passing Victoria Falls on the way, and finally by the Belgian road, the Chemin de Fer du Katanga, to Elisa- bethville, the African headquarters of the company. From Cape Town to the border it is about 2150 mi. and from the border to Elisabethville about 158 mi., making a little over 2300 mi. from Cape Town, by rail.

IT has long been known that there are wide variations in the thermo-electric potential of pyrite. In the last few years a study of this variation and other properties of pyrite was carried out at the University of Toronto by F. G. Smith on specimens of pyrite from many loyalities. As a result of these studies the pyrite geothermometer was developed by Professor Smith. The calibration of the pyrite geothermometer is based on the assumption that "crystals of any one electronically conducting mineral species deposited at a high temperature have a more positive thermoelectric potential than crystals deposited at a low temperature, and the thermo-electric potential varies continuously between any given limits of the temperature of deposition." The cause of the variation was postulated to be crystal discontinuities, such as lineage boundaries. As yet this postulated relationship has not been established as fact. On theoretical grounds it is indicated that the thermo-electric potential of pyrite or any other partial conductor is dependent upon a number of factors as well as the temperature of formation. For this and other reasons there is ground for doubt as to the validity of the relationship postulated above. To date a large number of readings have been made with the pyrite geothermometer which have been recorded in terms of the calibration of the instrument in degrees centigrade. So far most of the pyrite tested by this technique has been in association with gold ore. The values for the temperature of formation obtained in these tests appear to be reasonable and, in relation to geological problems, to vary in the right sense. Determinations on some specimens not in association with gold ore have given readings that appear to be much too high, taking into account the probable maximum temperature of the host rock. To sum up, although many determinations made with the pyrite geothermometer appear to give reasonable values for the temperature of formation of the pyrite, there are at the same time other readings which seem anomalous. On the basis of an examination of available results of work with the pyrite geothermometer, two problems must be considered: 1—the validity of the calibration of the pyrite geothermometer; and 2— the nature of the distribution of the thermo-electric potentials of pyrite in relation to the specific problems that have been examined. In this paper the academic problem relating to the validity of the calibration of the pyrite geothermometer will not be discussed. Instead, the variations of thermo-electric potential of pyrite in association with gold veins will be discussed with regard to specific examinations. The first of these two examinations deals with the distribution of thermo-electric potentials of pyrite in association with a gold vein and was carried out in the McIntyre Porcupine Mine, Schumacher, Ont., in the summer of 1949 as part of a study with this technique. The second problem deals with variations of thermo-electric potential of pyrite in gold ore specimens from all over the world. The specimens used in this study were part of the private collection of Frank Ebbutt, geologist for Howe Sound Exploration Co. Results of Detailed and Reconnaissance Studies In discussion of the results of determinations made in these two studies the values of thermo-electric potential in millivolts will be used. It will be noted that in some of the diagrams the determinations are recorded in terms of pyrite geothermometer temperatures. Fig. 1 is a calibration chart relating pyrite geothermometer temperatures and thermoelectric potentials. A full discussion of the technique is given in the original paper by F. G. Smith.' AN extensive study of German underground manufacturing experience is being undertaken by the Air Materiel Command. Headquarters officials consider completely underground facilities one of the most effective means of protecting aircraft production against air attacks of the strength and type employed in World War II. Advantages accruing to underground manufacturing installations other than protection are, perhaps, a smaller maintenance problem and the possibility of using gravity flow on some production lines. Offsetting these advantages are the high cost of construction, problems of ventilation, and poor acoustics. Excavation costs might well be less than the cost of enclosing the same area on the surface, as new and better methods of rock drilling and transportation are developed. Certainly the amount of building materials used would be far less than in constructing a surface plant of the same dimensions. A fewer number of skilled workers would be required to perform the labor of excavation. Underground construction would

Activation of sphalerite with silver ions results from the exchange of two Ag ions for one Zn ion in the sphalerite lattice. The exchange is proportional to the logarithm of time and proceeds until either of the reactants is consumed. Sodium cyanide prevents the activation of sphalerite by controlling the ratio [Zn++]/[Ag+]' in solution. If sphalerite has already been activated with excess silver, cyanide ions can deactivate sphalerite provided oxygen is present. SOLUBLE: silver salts are effective activators for flotation of sphalerite with potassium ethyl xan-thate as collector.* Since sphalerite takes up large quantities of silver ions rapidly,2-4 investigation of this system appeared fruitful for studying the mechanism of sphalerite activation and deactivation. Experimental data presented here comprise studies of the mechanism and rates of activation and deactivation of sphalerite with silver and cyanide ions. A 20-lb sample of sphalerite from Ottawa County, Oklahoma, was handpicked, crushed, screened, hy-drosized to produce a 65/100-mesh fraction, and purified by electrostatic separation. The sphalerite was then leached with benzene and absolute ethyl alcohol to remove possible organic contaminants and with 0.1 M NaCN to remove any copper that might have been picked up during screening. The benzene had been specially purified by grinding with fine sphalerite for 12 hr to remove trace impurities that might have had a specific affinity for sphalerite. Ii'inally, the mineral was washed, dried in flowing nitrogen, and stored in large ground-glass stoppered weighing bottles under a small nitrogen pressure. The specific surface of two samples from the 65/100-mesh sphalerite stock, measured by krypton gas adsorption," was 420 cm2 per g. Compared with spheres of the same size and specific gravity, the prepared mineral had five times as much surface. Results of a wet chemical analysis and of a spectro-graphic study are given in Table I. Manganese, nickel, tin, indium, thallium, cobalt, and magnesium were not detected spectrographically. All solutions were preparid by -adding reagent-grade chemicals to conductivitv water. which had been previously saturated with the desired gases. Nitrogen and oxygen were purified, but no attempt was made to purify the laboratory air. Radioanalysis was carried out with prepurified Ag110 tracer obtained from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The complete decay scheme for Ae is complex. Its primary emissions are 0.09 and 0.55 mev ß rays and 1.48 mev y raysB and its half-life is believed to be 270 days. In preparation of solutions of AgNO3, the amount of Ag110 added was negligible compared to that of the inert silver. Abstraction of silver from solution by sphalerite was measured after agitation of 1.5 g sphalerite with 20 ml of solution in 50-ml pyrex flasks. All sample preparations were carried out in a dry box so that the proper atmosphere could be maintained. After the mineral had been agitated in the silver nitrate solution, an aliquot of the solution and a sample of the wet mineral were transferred to separate counting vials and weighed. The solid sample was dried and re-weighed and the activity in both vials measured by means of a scintillation counter. With scintillation counting it is possible to count y radiation from the solid and liquid, a distinct advantage over the older ß-ray counting techdiques.4 All measurements of silver activity were made using a sodium-iodide well-type scintillation counter. The amount of zinc in solution was measured colorimet-rically by the monocolor method of Sandell.7 Activation Studies Exchange Between Zinc Ions and Silver Ions During Activation: The increase of Zn++ in solution during activation with Ag+ is shown in Table 11. These data indicate a replacement of one Zn++ by two Ag+. Analysis of a separate two-month agitation test indicated that the replacement of Zn++ by Ag+ was, as expected, in the molar ratio of 2.0.

THE paper of Reno H.. Sales on Ore Deposits at Butte, Mont.,' is a careful and painstaking work, an important contribution to the literature of the subject. As is almost inevitable in a work of such magnitude, a few misstatements occur; and some of these I shall endeavor to point out. Mr. Sales has also fallen into error, as I think, in the application of his theory of ore deposition; and while the modification which I venture to suggest is a minor one geologically, it is of great economic importance. I refer to Mr. Sales's idea of an outward migration of mineralizing solutions from a supposed central copper zone. In order that I may make myself plain, I must first epitomize the theory as a whole, which I understand to be this: All of the Butte ore deposits (save those along the Continental fault, not herein considered) are derived from solutions of magmatic origin, which, at the beginning of their ascent from a great depth, were, acid in reaction, hot, and were carriers of copper, zinc, manganese and other metals. As they departed from their point of origin they lost heat, and, because of reactions with the wall rock, became more and more alkaline. The metal deposited from these solutions in their hot condition was principally copper; and, as they cooled, they deposited less and less copper and more and more manganese and zinc, until the copper practically disappeared. With this theory in general I have no fault to find, nor have I, it must be stated, the qualifications necessary to enable me to pass upon it critically; but it seems to me to be reasonable and probable, and is one which I am quite willing to accept.

RECENTLY this laboratory undertook the task of preparing some low carbon metallic cobalt by the carbon reduction of precipitated cobalt oxides. The oxides came in two lots and had the compositions given in Table I. Industrially, cobalt rondels' are made by the carbon reduction of cobalt oxide in small reverberatory furnaces at temperatures near but not above 1050 °C. This is a slow and tedious small batch process but does give cobalt metal which is low in carbon (1 pct C). Inasmuch as these cobalt oxides were relatively low in copper and iron it was decided to reduce them with petroleum carbon in a small three-phase electric arc furnace of about 3 to 5 Ib of metal capacity. It was hoped such a procedure would save considerable time and perhaps also indicate an improved commercially feasible process. The furnace was preheated by using small pieces of carbon electrodes to maintain the arc until a temperature of 1500°C was reached. The broken pieces of electrodes were then removed and 500 g of the cobalt oxides and 60 to 100 g of petroleum coke added. At the end of the reduction reaction, a high lime flux was added to the furnace to facilitate the removal of sulphur. Due to the fineness of the cobalt oxide powder used and also to the presence of chlorides there was considerable dust lost in charging the furnace. This was overcome by preparing briquettes composed of the cobalt oxides, charcoal, and a little bentonite to serve as a binder. The results obtained are summarized in Table 11, which shows that the cobalt metal produced in the arc furnace was high in carbon varying from 2.5 to 3.5 pct. This, of course, is much too high. For certain uses, such as in the preparation of permanent magnets, the carbon content of cobalt must be low. It was necessary therefore to find an effective method of reducing the carbon content of the cobalt that had been prepared in the arc furnace. Van Arkel3 recommends the use of Co2O3 as a means of removing carbon from cobalt. Experiments by the authors indicate that carbon is removed with difficulty by this method. Other methods used, including lancing of the molten high carbon cobalt with a jet of oxygen, proved to be ineffective. The method finally used makes use of the fact that cobalt metal is decarburized by carbon dioxide at the temperature of the molten metal. Two methods were used: 1—carbon dioxide was bubbled up through the molten cobalt, and 2— molten cobalt was maintained in a carbon dioxide atmosphere. In the first method the gas was introduced below the surface of the molten metal by means of a quartz tube. A high frequency induction furnace was used to keep the cobalt molten in both of these experiments. This kept the metal somewhat agitated and no doubt was an important factor in hastening the decarburization 'process by the second method. Both methods gave satisfactory results as shown in Table 111. An interesting observation in connection with this 'work was that a small sample of carburized cobalt metal could be decarburized by heating it with an acetylene torch adjusted to give an oxidizing flame. This may have been due to the presence of carbon dioxide in the products of combustion. Samples of molten high carbon steel were decarburized by the same method and it is suggested that nickel and perhaps manganese can be decarburized in a similar manner. Additional work, including rate studies and other theoretical aspects of this problem, is in progress in this laboratory.

I N JUNE, 1918, at a meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in Worcester, Mass;, a resolution was adopted for a committee to investigate the aims and organization of that society. This was followed subsequently by similar independent action on the part of the Society of Civil Engineers. The other two Founder Societies were approached and requested to appoint similar committees, the four committees to combine as a .Joint Development Committee, later called the Joint Conference Committee, to investigate what might be done in the way of coordinating those activities of the Founder Societies which ape of common interest, and which were then being pursued separately. The Joint Conference committee worked diligently -for almost. two years and. brought forth a tentative as outlined in its report which was published in full in MINING AND. METALLURGY, December, 1919. It recommended the formation of a nation-wide organization to be composed of representatives' of all of -the engineering societies, local, state, regional, or national, the object to be to further the interest of the public through the use of technical knowledge and engineering experience, and to consider and act upon matters common to the engineering and allied technical professions. Whereas the technical societies have large fields of endeavor in welfare work, and their prime. efforts are 'still in technical lines, this new organization was to be devoted entirely to service, looking to the welfare of the nation and the engineering profession, and to service for the public in local and state affairs.

IN recent studies of the factors which affect the rate of desulphurization and its equilibrium, it became apparent that certain concurrent reactions were operative which had a significant effect on desulphurization. This is emphasized in the experiments of Hatch and Chipman1 and of Grant, Kalling, and Chipman' by the slow approach to a final state of equilibrium which is in marked contrast to the initial rapid transfer of sulphur from metal to slag. Since the removal of sulphur is of such profound importance in iron and steelmaking, it appeared necessary to investigate the reactions responsible for this behavior. It is now known that the presence of iron oxide in the slag interferes seriously with the principal reaction of blast-furnace desulphurization: CaO (slag) +-S + C - CaS (slag) + CO [l] The interfering reaction is most simply expressed as: CaS (slag) + 0 = CaO (slag) +-S 121 and a small concentration of oxygen (or FeO) is sufficient to hold a considerable amount of sulphur in the metal. It has been shown by Grant, Kalling, and Chipman2 that the addition of MnO to blast-furnace slag slows the removal of sulphur from the metal. This effect overshadows the contribution of MnO to basicity and is ascribed to its oxidizing power. It will be shown in this paper that SiO, also has sufficient oxidizing power to interfere with blastfurnace desulphurization. This is, of course, only one of its several effects. Primarily it is an acid and therefore reduces the concentration of excess lime. But when silicon is reduced to the metal the oxygen to which it was previously bonded becomes in part available for reaction 2. The proof of this statement is found in the following experiments. Experimental Procedure and Results Utilizing the same procedure and apparatus described by Grant, Kalling, and Chipman' five additional heats were made using slags IV and 11, the starting compositions of which were: slag IV—40 CaO, 10 MgO, 35 SiO,, 15 A1,0,; and slag 11—50 CaO, 10 MgO, 25 SiO,, 15 Al3O3. An important difference between these heats and those previously reported was that silicon to the extent of 1 to 4 pct was added to the present heats whereas the starting silicon content was formerly about 0.2 pct. Table I shows the slag and metal analyses for heats 82 to 87, and Table I1 shows the silicon addi- tions made to the charge. These additions are based on 400 g of metal and 400 g of slag. All heats had 1.65 400pct S charged before the cold slagadditions. The temperature was maintained at 1525°C. Rate of SiO, Reduction: Fig. 1 shows the silicon content of the metal in contact with slag IV at 1525°C as a function of time. Heat 70 from the work of Grant, afunctionKalling,of and Chipman is included as the lowest starting silicon. It will be noted that eeven with 4 pct Si in the starting metal, there is an increase in silicon content with time. Heat 84 is apparently approaching silicon equilibrium very slowly. Heats 70 and 82 with very much lower slowly.starting silicon show a more rapid initial rise in startingsilicon content but do not reach equilibrium during a long holding period. Fig. 2 shows 3 different initial silicon contents for Fig.2shows3differentheats 73 (from Grant, Kalling, and Chipman) 86 and 87, in contact with slag II, the most basic slag. Heat 73 is increasing in silicon with time, whereas heat 87 with an initial silicon content of 3.7 pct shows a decrease with time. Heat 86 shows a very close approach to equilibrium. The rate of transfer of silicon from slag to equilibrium.metal is very slow in all of those heats, even those which are initially far from equilibrium. ____

THE action of mercury on stressed brass to produce cracks was known before Moore, Beckinsale and Mallinson1 showed that actual season cracking did not occur spontaneously but could be induced by ammonia. These investigators studied other substances, including diphenylamine, without finding that anything other than ammonia could cause season cracking. Grimston2 reported season cracking in cartridge cases stored in wooden boxes wetted with dilute sulphuric acid pickling solution. Season cracking associated with sulphur dioxide, water vapor and air has been reported by Johnston,3 although he reported that trimethylamine and pyridine did not cause cracking. Jevons4 has ascribed season cracking of brass in certain instances to trimethylamine, "aldehyde amine," "ketone amine" and pyridine, but no experimental work was done evidently to prove this definitely. Pyridine was investigated by Morris,' who found it to have considerable cracking power. In the present investigation, the object was a qualitative evaluation of a number of representative amines with respect to their ability to cause season cracking. Thus it was desired only that an appreciable vapor pressure of each amine be obtained in order to make the test as severe as possible, without attempting to test equivalent concentrations for comparative purposes. METHODS Specimens Two types of specimen were used: I. Unannealed 70-30 brass cups formed from 0.040-in. thick sheet. Height of cup was 1 3/8 in. and diameter was 1 7/8 inches. 2. First draw pieces of caliber .50 cartridge cases in the unannealed condition (70-30 brass). The cups were representative of a thin wall and thin base specimen, whereas the draw pieces have a thick base (1/4 in.) and a thick wall (approximately 3/32 in.). Both types of specimens contained high residual stress and cracked in less than one minute in a solution of I per cent mercurous nitrate and I per cent nitric acid provided that this was preceded by a 30-sec. pickle in 40 per cent nitric acid. Specimens were prepared as follows: (I) degreased in trichlorethylene, (2) rinsed in H20, (3) pickled 5 min. in 10 per cent by volume H2SO4 (1.84 sp. gr.), (4) rinsed in H2O, and (5) dried. Amines Tested In selecting the amines, representatives of the three series of amines and one series of substituted amines were chosen. The aliphatic series was represented by the methyl and ethyl primary, secondary and tertiary amines. These are the simplest aliphatic amines. For the aromatic series, the phenyl primary, secondary and tertiary amines were selected as being the simplest. The heterocyclic series was represented by pyridine, which is a simple heterocyclic base (tertiary amine).

The aliphatic series was represented by the methyl and ethyl primary, secondary and tertiary amines. These are the simplest aliphatic amines. For the aromatic series, the phenyl primary, secondary and tertiary amines were selected as being the simplest. IT is necessary occasionally to use aluminum-alloy sheet where moderately elevated temperatures are encountered. Considerable attention has been directed toward determining the influence of "artificial aging" on the room-temperature properties of the precipitation-hardenable alloys, as testified by numerous company reports and by references 1 to 4. Investigations on the properties at elevated temperatures are few, however,5-7 and have not always covered the range of times and temperatures of greatest interest. The present investigation was instituted to overcome this deficiency. The work was done for the Office of Production Research and Development of the War Production Board, under the supervision of the War Metallurgy Committee, as a part of the "restricted" Project NRC-548. It has been released for publication by the Office of Production Research and Development. As is well known, the high-strength aluminum alloys achieve their remarkable properties as a result of precipitation-hardening. In production they are subjected to a solution heat-treatment followed by quenching, to retain the supersaturated solid solution. The solution treatment is followed by "aging" (precipitation-hardening) either at room temperature or at a suitable elevated temperature. A considerable increase in tensile and compressive yield stresses results from precipitation at room temperature ("natural aging"). Through the elevated-temperature process ("artificial aging") it is possible to obtain values of yield stress considerably higher than those attainable by natural aging. The increase in yield stress is accompanied by a smaller gain in ultimate tensile stress and by a decrease in elongation. Further exposure results in "overaging," attended by a steady decrease in yield stress. In the production of the artificially aged materials, temperatures and times are selected to achieve full aging. The following important characteristics are associated with the process: I. The strain rate dependence of the flow stress of the eutectoid Zn-Al alloy has been determined as a function of mechanical processing, microstructure, and temperature. The best superplastic properties result from the ultrafine, equiaxed structure produced by solution treatment and isothermal transformation at 0°C. Lamellar structures produced by isothermal transformation and coarse equiaxed structures produced by annealing also exhibit strain rate sensitivity in excess of 0.5, but at higher stresses and lower strain rates than the finest structure. Solution treatment and isothermal transformation eliminate the effect of prior processing history. Small composition variations in the binary alloy do not influence the mechanical properties. Below the eutectoid transformation temperature (.275C) increasing temperature lowers the flow stress at all strain rates. The data do not favor any of the present proposals for the mechanism of superplastic flow. ALLOYS of zinc and aluminum, near the eutectoid composition, have been investigated for: 1) the flow stress-strain rate and elongation behavior,1, 2) the transformation kinetics,3 and 3) structure,3"5 but the structure sensitivity of the mechanical properties is poorly understood. Using a near eutectoid alloy water-quenched from 380°C, Backofen et aL2 estab- high and increases with increasing strain rate. They found a correlation between strain rate sensitivity and tensile elongation as expected from the increased resistance to necking that a high strain rate sensitivity provides.296 The large elongation at high strain rates is attractive for metal forming. Since most other superplastic alloys7-l3 do not show high strain rate sensitivity at such a high strain rate (for the exception see Ref. 12) there is the possibility of a unique deformation mechanism for this alloy. The sensitivity of the mechanical properties of the eutectoid alloy to thermal history1 suggests a structure sensitivity that has not been demonstrated. Gar-wood and Hopkins3 identified a lamellar product for material transformed between 200" and 260°C. The size of the lamellae decreased with decreasing temperature. They also demonstrated that an unresolved transformation product formed below 200°C. A granular two-phase material was resolved for specimens quenched to below 150°C by Mitbauer and sauerwald4 who observed coarsening of the structure after annealing. The role of grain boundaries in superplastic deformation is suggested by the strong effect of grain refinement in encouraging this phenomenon at high strain rateS7-11, 13 and is emphasized in several proposals about rnechanism7, 8, 12 and in a theory14 of high-temperature deformation. Alden8 showed metallographic evidence that grain boundary sliding is occurring extensively at strain rates where m is large but less at high strain rates where normal plasticity is observed. The purpose of this paper is to present the data and some interpretation of the results of a laboratory study of the reduction of iron ore and the deposition of carbon from the reducing gas mixtures in such reductions. One major object of the study was to determine the effect of gas pressures on these chemical processes. Effort was made to approximate the conditions of temperature, gas composition, linear and mass gas velocities, pressure range, and extent of reduction prevailing in commercial blast furnaces. The results show that the reduction of Fe203 proceeds by two steps, largely consecutive under the conditions used herein: reduction of Fe203 to FeO, and reduction of FeO to Fe. Unless the gas has a CO!CO, ratio greater than 2.1 only the first step occurs under these conditions (850°C) but the following generalizations apply to either step or to the combination. The rate of reduction of relatively fine ore particles .at any time is proportional to the mass rate of supply of CO (provided some of it is thermodynamically available): the rate therefore is proportional to the linear velocity at constant pressure, or to the pressure at constant linear velocity. Thus, the rate of reduction may be increased without increase in linear velocity of the reducing gas by increasing the mass velocity of the gas and increasing the pressure correspondingly to avoid any increase in the linear velocity. The rate "constants"—i.e., the efficiency of conversion of the "available" CO supplied— is not actually constant but decreases as the reduction proceeds, and is a function only of the state of the ore; i.e., of the amount of reduction already accomplished and hence of the amount of CO passed. The particle size of ore used in nearly all the experiments was relatively small (8 to 14-mesh). The rate of reduction in run 16 with 3 to 8-mesh ore particles is within experimental error the same as with the finer ore. Although this would indicate an absence of effect due to particle size in this range of ore particles, it is desirable to have more data on other ore sizes and on ore of different densities before arriving at any generalizations on this point. Although it is possible to extend the analysis of these results to consideration of the more detailed kinetics and mechanism of iron oxide reduction, such extension is beyond the scope of the present paper. From the experiments on carbon deposition, it was evident that if carbon deposition is increased at all by the application of pressures up to 10 psi ga., such increase appears to be less than the experimental and analytical error. IN every commercial establishment,' it is customary and necessary to take inventory, periodically, and to account for profits and detect losses, to achieve productiveness and enhance efficiency. So, too, in the ordered life of every individual, there is the need of periodic introspection. The exercise of the Sabbath for rational thought, the utilization of pause, or rest, from the technique of daily occupation, orient the efforts. These are the constructive opportunities by which we grow always better than we were. Thus, also, there' is need of a periodic analysis of the organizations to which we belong and toward which we con- tribute. So we find' reason for the fitness of our loyalty. There seems to be no half-ground for the engineer. Whatever presumes to bear his name demands either the crushing pressure of his heel or the supporting pressure of his hand.

FROM the first days on the Norman beaches to the last days on the Elbe the Army Engineers of World War II lived off the countryside for the great bulk of the construction supplies needed for the fulfillment of their ultimate mission-to keep the army moving. To accomplish this end, vast tonnages of rock, timber, and steel were required in the construction of roads, railroads, and bridges. Combat Engineer battalions operated quarries under shell fire as a routine matter. An Engineer forestry company was decimated while cutting bridge timber on the Siegfried line. Oneof the more spectacular feats of the Army Engineers in obtaining construction materials was the operation of the Hadir Steel Works during the fall and winter o f 1944.

NATURE endowed the Niagara Frontier with great resources but it was the molding of these resources by the early pioneers that assured its future development. This great industrial district of New York stretches along about fifty miles of shore line on the eastern end of Lake Erie and the Niagara River, embracing the two counties of Erie and Niagara, with the city of Buffalo about in the center. This location at the junction of the eastern end of the Great Lakes and the western boundary of the State, a great focal point of land and water, transportation, guaranteed the development of the Frontier. Although the first white settlers came to this section in 1784, it was not until after the turn of the nineteenth century that real development started. Perhaps the most significant influence in the early days was the completion of the Erie Canal between Buffalo and Albany in 1825. This then monumental achievement gave Buffalo an advantage in the race for the best trade route to the Western

THE five serpentine masses exposed within the northern half of Riley County, Fig. 1, constitute a major part of the few exposures of igneous rock in Kansas.' Although not many subsurface data are available for this part of Riley County,2 six deep wellsV indicate that the basement complex lies between 2500 and 3000 ft below the earth's surface. A northwestward-trending ridge in the present basement surface, which extends across the northern half of Riley County, is indicated on Mettner's contour map.' The serpentine masses lie in a region that was active during Pennsylvanian and Permian time along two main tectonic trends, which may, in part at least, have developed contemporaneously." One trend is northeasterly, as evidenced by the Nemaha anticline, the Abilene anticline, the Voshell anticline, and many other smaller northeastward-trending folds. The other trend is northwesterly, as evidenced by the central Kansas uplift, the Salina basin syncline, and smaller northwestward-trending folds. The area of the Abilene anticline was actively deformed during much of this time, and the present surface rocks, for the most part Permian in age, show many normal faults." The Bala and Leonardville intrusions lie within a mile of the axis of the Abilene anticline, Fig. 1, as mapped by Wallace Lee;' the Randolph No. 1 and Randolph No. 2 intrusions lie within about 5 miles of the axis; and the Stockdale intrusion lies within about 8 miles of the axis. The igneous rocks have intruded horizontal or gently dipping limestones and shales that are late Permian in age.V he period of intrusion, according to Moore and Landes, was probably Cretaceous.' At present a detailed description of the petrography is available for only the Bala intrusion. Moore and Haynes' describe the rock at Bala as a green, serpentinized, porphyritic, peridotite breccia containing inclusions of shale. The ground mass consists chiefly of serpentine and calcite with considerable chromite (5 to 10 pct) and some magnetite. The phenocrysts consist principally of altered olivine with some altered augite and biotite. Although probably different in petrographic details, all the serpentine masses are somewhat similar in that 1) they consist of a dark green, fine-grained ground mass of igneous rock containing many xeno-liths composed of fragments of the neighboring sedimentary rock; 2) they tend to form small mounds on the landscape, thus indicating their greater resistance to weathering and erosion; and 3) they are magnetic. Previous Magnetic Survey of the Bala Intrusion: To the writer's knowledge, only the Bala intrusion had been surveyed with a magnetometer prior to the magnetic surveys discussed in this paper.
