THE problem of picking the best students for an engineering college can no longer, be considered as simply one of determining the amount of general ability, but rather of finding special aptitudes for scientific work, according to Carl C. Brigham~ a Princeton University professor, who has been conducting researches on methods of selecting engineering undergraduates at Cooper Union, an evening school in New York City. When we first began this investigation seven years ago," says Dr. Brigham, "we thought the whole job would be done a soon as we had found a good method of measuring general intelligence. Today we feel that we are still about five years away from a solution, but on somewhat firmer footing than when we were looking for general ability.

THE first pump of this character, made by H. R. Worthington, and, so far as the writer is informed, the first and only one of this kind ever constructed, is now in daily use in the above-named works. The water-pressure necessary for the working of the hydraulic machinery of this plant had been supplied, up to the time of the building of this pump, by two Worthington Duplex High Pressure Pumps, having steam-cylinders of 20 inches diameter and 12-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 72 inches diameter; eight inlet and eight outlet valves of 22 inches diameter, and pumping into a 6-inch pipe. These pumps required a large amount of steam, and, in consequence of the various additions to their duty, their capacity became far short of the work required. In preference to putting in another engine of the same class, it was decided to accept Mr. Worthington's proposition to build the compound one under description, he guaranteeing that it should be equal to the demands of the works, and at the same time cause a saving of from 5 to 6 tons of coal per day from the amount required to run the two old pumps. The new engine has been in operation about one month, and so far has exceeded the most sanguine expectations. It consists of two high-pressure cylinders of 21 inches and two low-pressure ones of 36g inches diameter, by 36-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 91 inches diameter. There are two air-pumps of 20 inches diameter by 18-inch stroke; the condenser being 24 inches diameter by 60 inches high. Both cylinders are jacketed with wood and felt, and the low-pressure cylinder also with live steam. The high and low pressure steam-cylinders are in line and immediately adjoining each other, while the inconveniences attending an internal stuffing-box are avoided by having two piston-rods for each of the low-pressure cylinders, running through stuffing-boxes on the outside of the smaller high-pressure ones. I1944 the cry was for higher production more tons, more metal. New plants were built, capacity of old plants was increased and millmen all over the country were treating tonnages far above normal, sacrificing recoveries to vet that extra metal from extra tons. The list of "critical minerals," at first long, has been scratched until there remains, not a list, but only an item or two. Stocks of all metals and minerals, with possibly one or two exceptions, are now entirely adequate and numerous plants have curtailed or suspended operation.

When lime and magnesia are used as fluxes in the smelting of titaniferous ores fluid, digestible slags low in iron oxide and high in titanium dioxide are produced. The mineral phases present in such slags are (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2, CaTiO3, and minor amounts of silicate glass (or its devitrification products). The flux additions are added to the ore in relative amounts to crystallize a ratio of (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2 to CaTiO2, of near the eutectic proportions of 60 pct (Fe,Mg)0.2TiO2 and 40 pct CaTiO3. FeO-Ti02 (ilmenite) remains present in the slag until the FeO content is reduced to approximately 8 pct. Op- timum slag composition is obtained by reducing the FeO content to between 2 and 6 pct. Continued reduction shifts he (Fe,Mg) 0.2Ti02 to oxygen deficient structures classified as MgTi30e and MgTi204. Further reduction yields titanium oxycarbides and freezes the melts.

Up to the beginning of World War I, the American ferro-alloy industry was in its infancy and largely dependent on Europe. During that War, capacity was over expanded. Later recovery and commercial and scientific development have resulted in an industry which in 1957 produced 1.8 million tons of ferro-alloys. THE ferro-alloy industry is today an important element of the industrial structure of the United States. Its output is valued at almost half a billion dollars annually and its products are basic not only to National defense but also to the peacetime standard of living. This has not always been so. The ferro-alloy industry from late in the last century has grown from small beginnings, nurtured by the demand for stronger, tougher materials; by the search for steels capable of absorbing severe impact loads and resisting corrosive media and high temperatures; and also by the need for electrical and electronic specialties. Conversely, the ferro-alloy industry has grown because it developed improved steels and alloys by extensive research, and because it was able to show to steel makers the advantages accruing from the more extensive and the more economical use of alloying elements. The industry has grown in scope from producing a few grades of ferro-alloys of the more common metals-manganese, chromium, vanadium, silicon, titanium, tungsten, and molybdenum-until there are today some 150 compositions of ferro-alloys available to the steel maker, including such elements as columbium, zirconium, and boron. In 1912 the industry produced 360,000 tons of alloys valued at about $12,000,000, while 1957 production figures show an output of 1.8 million tons worth $440,000,000. In the United States, the history of an industry is largely the history of the companies making up this industry; hence, this paper will briefly trace the development of the most important ferro-alloy-producing companies. Quite varied have been the reasons that caused the different companies to move into the ferro-alloy field; the Willson Aluminum Co., seeking methods of producing aluminum, succeeded with the production of calcium carbide, and their developing electric furnace skills led them to the production of ferro-silicon and ferrochromium alloys. Willson was the predecessor of the Electro Metallurgical Co. of Union Carbide. (communication to the Secretary*)-In an article as brief as mine it was not possible to .fully cover the metallurgical field; this accounts for my not mentioning the electric furnace for the melting of ferromanganese in the manufacture of manganese steel, although the advantages of such an apparatus are fully appreciated by me. FREDERICK LAIST, + Anaconda, Mont. (communication to the Sec-retary?).-Manganese steel has proved very serviceable in our plant.. We are using manganese steel for the jaw plates on the 5-' by 15-in. crushers in the concentrator instead of cast-iron jaw plates which we formerly used. The manganese steel wears five times as long as the cast iron. We are also using manganese steel in our 8- by 20-in. crushers. In our primary crushers, which are 12 by 24 in., we still use cast iron because the manganese-steel plates wore unevenly and left shoulders which caused trouble in setting up the crusher. Another reason for preferring cast iron in these crushers is that they grip the ore better on account of wearing of the rougher surface. The surface of the manganese steel becomes polished and large pieces of ore fail to be drawn in. We recently tested 8- by 16-in. manganese-steel elevator buckets working on 2-in. undersize against malleable-iron buckets and found that manganese-steel buckets lasted two and one-half times as long as the malleable-iron buckets. We use manganese-steel screen plates on our 2-in. trommels and have found that they last about five times as long as cast iron. We also used manganese-steel wheels and rails under the 20-deck round table in our slimes-treatment plant. We first used cast-iron rails and wheels and found that these wore badly at the end of two or three weeks, while the life of the manganese steel seemed to be almost indefinite; we never had occasion to change any of the manganese steel rail sections or wheels in the year and nine months that the plant was in operation.

THE occurrence of enormous masses of pure copper has given the mining district of Lake Superior worldwide reputation. The first masses brought from there excited great attention, and directed the notice of the mining world to the few particular mines from which they were taken. It may not now be generally known that nearly all the veins which are worked, and which cut across the trap ridge, contain mass copper, and that large masses are continually being raised from them. The largest continuous mass which has been taken out was probably that from the Minnesota, in 1857, which is variously stated as weighing 420 tons and 470 tons. Its length was about 45 feet, its breadth or height 22 feet, and its greatest thickness 8 feet. All such masses are very irregular and ragged in their form and thickness, thinning out generally from a foot to a few inches, and straggling through the vein until they connect with other large masses. This was the character of a mass found in the Phoenix Mine, one of the oldest on the lake, which mass altogether weighed some 600 tons. But this was really a series of masses more or less connected by strings of metal, yet no one large part of it weighed, singly, over 200 tons. A similar series of masses, weighing about 600 tons, was extracted from the Minnesota. Some of the Phoenix masses were four to five feet thick of solid copper. The Cliff Mine has yielded masses weighing from 100 to 150 tons in one piece. One of 40 tons was taken out this year, besides numerous blocks weighing from 1 to 8 tons. This mine and the Central are now yielding mass copper in abundance. It is, of course, impossible to pick, or drill, or to break out such huge masses of solid metal when they are found, by drifting upon the course of the vein. The method of extraction is as follows The miner picks out or excavates a narrow passage or chamber upon one side of the mass, laying it bare as far as possible over its whole surface. It is usually firmly held by its close union with the vein-stuff, or by its irregular projections above, below, and at the end. If it cannot then be dislodged by levers, the excavation of a chamber is commenced behind the mass, and this excavation is made large enough to receive from 5 to 20 or more kegs of powder. In one

UNDER the stimulus of war psychology the American public has grown confused and jittery in its thinking on the subject of this nation's petroleum resources. This confusion arises from the failure of the average citizen, and even of many leaders in government, in our armed forces, and in the petroleum industry itself, to distinguish between our proved reserves of petroleum in the several oil-producing states and the total petroleum re- sources available to this nation. Leaders and public alike examine the accepted estimates of our proved reserves and thoughtlessly conclude that these estimates represent the total of our petroleum resources. Our fears are aggravated if we turn to the statistics on oil-finding and observe that the discovery of new reserves has waned decidedly in recent years. This confusion is dangerous because, under its influence, ill - considered policies spring up and flourish, choking out the most valuable fruits of the long experience of the American petroleum industry.

GOLD was discovered in Gold Canyon on May 15, 1849. Following this discovery placer miners worked the gravels in the canyon for-ten years, finally discovering the outcrop of the Comstock lode at Gold Hill in May, 1859, and in Ophir ravine on June 12 of the same year. Before long large quantities of gold and silver, were taken from the lode and one of the West's most spectacular mining booms drew thousands of fortune seekers to Nevada. After a long period of production activity waned and in late years little mining was done. The recent reopening of the old mines and the discovery of ore in other parts of the vein, and in other veins of the district, has led to a revival of interest in the Comstock. Virginia City, Gold Hill, and Silver City, situated along the great vein system, are enjoying a period of prosperity and a large influx of people.

In recent years there has been an increasing effort to attract students into engineering. Obviously, the effort is necessary because young people find the image of the engineer unattractive. Some of the things they find unattractive are real, some are not, and part of the problem is too little knowledge of the field. First, I would like to comment on some of the ideas which appear to be justified. Engineering is a difficult course of study. True, and nothing can or should be done to change this. The education is continually being improved, but it is unlikely to be made easier.

RECENT years have seen important practical advances in the construction of recording instruments for use with thermocouples. The difficulties of the problem will be appreciated when it is remembered that a 10° F. change in temperature of a base-metal couple at 1500° means a change in the electromotive force of about 0.00035 volt. In a circuit having a resistance of 350 ohms, this means a change in the current of 0.00000,1 amp.; and despite this requirement of great sensitivity the instruments must be sufficiently robust to withstand the rough usage which is so often their lot. Two methods are in common use for the measurement of the electromotive force produced by a thermocouple: 1. The milliammeter method, in which the current produced by the thermocouple in a circuit of known resistance is measured and from. this the electromotive force is deduced by Ohm's law. 2. The potentiometer method in which a known potential difference is opposed to the thermocouple electromotive force. The use of thermocouple and milliammeter for measuring temperature introduces some possible sources of error, for the reading depends on a number of factors, including the following: (1) Electromotive force set up at the hot junction, (2) electromotive force set up at the cold junction, (3) resistance of the circuit including thermocouple, lead wires, and meter, (4) field strength of magnets, (5) strength of controlling springs in meter, (6) friction at pivots, of pointer on paper, etc. It is obviously necessary to so design and maintain the installation that the reading is independent of all the factors except the first. The electromotive force set up at the cold junction can easily be taken care of provided it is constant. This has been approximately accomplished by burying the cold junction in the ground or actually secured by locating it in a container, the temperature of which is kept constant by means of a thermostat.

The New Jersey Zinc Zompany operates at Depue, Illinois, an integrated zinc smelting plant using tie vertical retort reduction process. The overall operation comprises green concentrate roasting, sintering, vertical retort smelting and metal refining. In the roasting operation, the fine concentrate is pelletized, the dried pellets fluidized and autogenously roasted with air in a “fluid column” with minimal formation of dust requiring recirculation. The roasted pellets and any associated roaster dust are agglomerated in a rotating drum and laid down, in combination with coal for fuel, on a Dwight-Lloyd sintering machine which converts to a semi-fused mass - a physical state more suitable for vertical retort smelting. The smeltins plant of 27 vertical retorts rated at 8 T zinc each per day on average requires the following major processing steps - mix preparation and briquettine, briquet coking, vertical retort reduction, vapor condensation and slab casting of metal. A portion of zinc production is converted to 99.99+ percent purity by boiling and fractional distillation in columns consisting of externally heated, superimposed trays of high-conductivity refractory.

IN a previous article preliminary experiments were described, indicating the possibilities of a quantitative spectroscopic method for the determination of small amounts of lead in copper, which would be accurate and rapid, and could be carried out in the refining plant by one not skilled in chemical analysis. The present paper deals with the development of the method in the factory, giving the details of apparatus and its standardization, and presenting a comparison of the accuracy of the method with that of the standard electrolytic determination. The Reconstruction and Research Division of the United States Council of National Defense has, up to date, prepared two reviews on the above subjects: one covers foreign countries and the other covers the activities in the States. These reviews contain information appearing in various Governmental and public periodicals. While the information on foreign countries is necessarily incomplete and fragmentary, its summation is perhaps the most complete work of this kind so far accomplished. The information from the states consists mainly of bills and ordinances introduced in the state legislature, municipal councils, legislature committee reports, programs suggested by governors, and other state and local officials and local organizations It is realized that a good deal of this information will be useful to engineers studying conditions in the various states, and especially to those who want an insight into the general condition in all the states. For instance, the reconstruction problem in each state involving highway, reclamation, buildings, etc., are covered in detail.
