THE following series of analyses, which may, be of interest to Bessemer-steel makers, is submitted as a contribution to the much-vexed discussion of manganese in Bessemer steel. They were made by the writer in the spring of 1881, at the works of the Pittsburgh Bessemer Steel Company Limited, during a period of about eight days, part of, which time the rail-steel showed great variation in rolling qualities. During the first part of the time in question, it rolled well; later on it began to roll worse until, finally, it cracked very badly, reaching its worst stage. After this it rapidly improved until it again rolled smoothly. During this .time of transition 'from. good rolling to bad, and back to good again, the course of the manganese was followed' quite closely. It is the striking correspondence between these varying manganese contents and the differences in rolling which is here presented as worthy of notice. The other ordinary elements were determined occasionally, but showed no unusual variation Tim steel, in question, was ordinary rail-steel of about "the following composition : C=.35.P=.08.Mn=.98. MIXED emotions were produced by the announcement that the buildup of weapons will be stretched out till mid-1954 instead of the previous 1953 deadline. Reason: government assistance programs will be tougher to get but there will be easement in materials allocations. Earlier in February, DPA had announced that tightening up on regulations governing rapid tax -amortization would become effective March 1. In the future, DPA will have to certify amortization contracts for all construction and permanent installations costing more than $100,000. This action was necessary according to DPA's James F. King, so that new industrial expansions already approved could be assessed in the light of the changing critical mineral picture. When DMPA inherited the backlog of government assistance, requests from DMA, it moved in fast. The results of DMPA's work is described in the article on p. 351 by James K. Richardson; The speed with which these requests were approved and the lengthening of the military program have made a reappraisal of the critical mineral list necessary. It looks as though the consumer industries will be getting more metal soon and, led by steel, there is an industry push toward the abandonment of CMP. Relaxing of materials controls appears imminent but discontinuing CMP is in the "let's talk this thing over" stage.

ALMOST as many attended the annual dinner this year as last, when the presence of Mr. Hoover was such an attraction that almost two-thirds more than had ever attended before were present. Only by putting the late comers at tables in the balcony could everybody be accommodated. Past President De-Golyer was the toastmaster and in opening the post-prandial exercises referred to the regrettable fact that this was the last of the long series of dinners which have been held at the Waldorf, as the hotel will be torn down to give way to an office building before another year. To the delight of the gathering "Oscar" appeared and, in a delightfully brief but characteristic speech, referred to the long association that had existed and hinted that a new Waldorf-Astoria may arise, where the Institute could continue to gather annually in an enlarged replica of the room they had met in so long. Before taking up the presentation of the medals, Mr. DeGolyer referred to the Institute's "Legion of Honor," the 34 men who have been members continuously for over fifty years. For various reasons only five of them, W. S. Ayres, F. G. Corning, Henry D. Hibbard, A. F. Schneider and Arthur Thacher, could be present. They were all seated at the speaker's table, and W. S. Ayres, 56 years a member, as the dean of the group, was called on to respond for them all. He said: "The introduction I have just received would indicate that this particular group of men to which I belong is considered by the chairman to be a group of real antiques. Possibly you are questioning the accuracy of his judgment. I hope you are, although there may be some first-sight evidences tending to substantiate the view held by the chairman.

SINCE: the date of my previous paper on this subject, presented at the Cincinnati Meeting, February, 1881, and published in our Transactions, vol. xii., p. 459, I have had occasion to revisit the Canadian apatite region, and to collect further data concerning its geognosy, which I hope to describe at a future time. At present, I shall put on record a few brief observations concerning the more recent operations in apatite-mining in the Lievre district, to the north of the Ottawa River, where the mines are as yet confined to a small area in the townships of Buckingham, Portland, Templeton, and Darry; the earlier workings having been along the Rideau Canal, to the south of the Ottawa. The large mining operations lately undertaken in the Lièvre district show that the crystalline phosphate of lime or apatite belongs to lodes of great size, which traverse the ancient gneiss of the region. These lodes include a granitoid feldspathic rock, and a pyroxene rock, with large masses of quartz, of carbonate of lime, of pyrites, and of apatite. THIS paper discusses what mining reports should contain when presented to the California State Corporation Department, to accompany applications for the sale of stock to the general public, but the principles involved apply to mine financing everywhere. Such reports should 'be as clear and concise as possible, endeavoring to tell the truth in as few words as necessary. Should the engineer be aware that his report is to be used in connection with the sale of stock to the general public, he should consider the public as his client as well as the person who actually employs him. It is always required that the engineer be favorably known and of recognized standing. The following points should be given careful attention : 1. A legal description and location of the property. 2. Transportation conditions, and how they may be expected to affect the operating costs. 3. A brief history of the property, its production record as to tonnage, grade, and character of the ore should be given. Should the property have suspended operations for any reason, this should be given. Any details of former operating costs should be given, especially as to how any improvement could be made, due to better methods which might be employed.' 4. The main geological features and whether they are such as to lead the engineer to believe that the mine may possibly 'be exhausted or the ore of such grade as to be no longer profitable. If he considers them favorable, he should give his reasons for the belief that further development work may produce profitable results. A map showing these features should be submitted, and it is not necessary that such map be highly colored or contain any more than the essential matters. 5. The rheological properties of aqueous solutions of several commercial flocculants were investigated using a rotating coaxial cylinder viscometer. Similarities between the pH-apparent viscosity relationship and the flocculating properties of the reagents are discussed here. Synthetic neutral polymers and polyelectrolytes are used extensively as flocculants in mining and chemical engineering operations. The action of these reagents has been interpreted as adsorption of the polymer flocculant to the mineral surface, followed by the formation of physical polymer bridges between the particles.4,5 A consequence of the bridging model is that the efficiency of a polymer flocculant depends on the degree with which the polymer is adsorbed to the mineral surface, and the extent to which the polymer molecule forms a bridge between colliding particles. The length of the polymer molecule and its orientation at the mineral surface are important in the bridging mechanism since the further the polymer segments can protrude from the mineral surface the greater the probability may be of these segments contacting another mineral particle. DURING the last year or so, with higher prices for gold and silver, many old properties in the West have come back to life. Almost every profitable producer in the old days has been considered, and the reasons for its shut-down investigated. If it seems likely that modern ore-finding, mining, and metallurgical methods, and S35 gold can again put the property on a profitable basis, someone can usually be found to back the venture. Methods of rejuvenation vary with the property, of course, but the following outline of what has been done with one group of mines in Idaho is fairly typical and may be suggestive to others. The Golden Chariot gold-silver properties, near Silver City, consist of seven old mines, working a vein system striking north and south, which had a productive length of some 3500 ft. The vein is a quartz-filled fissure with granite walls. Gold occurs in native, and with silver in the form of electrum which is the natural alloy of the two metals. Meeting of Nov. 21, 1913.-The President reported the appointment of the officers and members of the Committee on Non-Metallic Minerals, published elsewhere in this Bulletin. The President appointed the Executive Committee of the New York Section as a local .committee to have charge of the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February, 1914, with power to add to their numbers. It was voted that the Chairman of each Technical Committee, be made ex officio a member of the Committee on Papers and Publications. At the request of the Secretary, Burr A. Robinson was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Institute. E. Gybbon Spilsbury was nominated as representative of the Institute on the John Fritz Medal Board of Award. It was voted that the next summer meeting of the Institute be held in Salt Lake City in August, 1914, with power to the Executive Committee to fix the exact date. Substantial reduction was made in the price of the back Transactions of the Institute in accordance with the notice published on p. i of this Bulletin.. The By-Laws of the Montana Local Section were approved. The printing contract for the year 1914 was made with the Maple Press. Thirty-eight Members, one Associate and three Junior Members were elected.

His face wreathed in smiles, J. Richard Lucas, Chairman of the Keynote Session, conceded that "the papers appeared to have been of some interest." This was a modest description of the opening day of technical sessions at the SME Fall Meeting and Exhibition, October 13 to 15, in Tampa, Fla. The auditorium had capacity for 800 spectators and there was hardly a vacant seat visible. The topic, Resource Development of the Fertilizer Minerals, was covered in four authoritative papers. H. S. Ten Eyck set the stage. Resources are always viewed in relation to future requirements, and these depend largely on population. If the population trend continues, the world's 3.3 billion people will increase to 6.7 billion people by the year 2000. About 70% of this increased population will be in developing areas which are not capable of supplying sufficient food and fiber for their needs. Fertilizer is a means of bridging the crop shortage. Projections of fertilizer requirements by 1970 are from 53 million to 67.5 million long tons of plant nutrient which compares with 1964 consumption of 37.7 million tons. Looking ahead to 1980, the growth continues with an estimated demand of 80 million to 113 million tons combined of N P and K.

THE session* on Non-ferrous Metallurgy held Monday morning was conducted in a most satisfactory manner with F. F. Colcord, vice-president, U. S. Smelting Co., in the chair. In spite of the early hour and the fact that members desired to register first, the meeting started quite promptly, with almost every chair in the room occupied. About 65 men were present and during the morning many more came but, not being able to find room, drifted away to other fields of activity. The first paper presented, "Lead Refining Practice of the Bunker Hill Smelter of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co.," by Alfred F. Beasley (T. P. 303), was read in abstract by Edward H. Robie, and an animated discussion followed in which Messrs. Johnson (written discussion), Brewer and Jones and Professor Hayward participated. The discussion hinged principally on the liquation of the zinc crusts, but Professor Hayward called attention to the fact that the practice of keeping the gold and silver crusts separate was not new and the present scheme illustrated the axiom that processes based on fundamental principles should not be considered as extinct; one can never tell when it may be found advantageous to make use of them again.

An equation has been developed which will permit the direct determination of free settling velocity of any sized particle encountered in mineral benefici-ation. The equation is based on Newton's Law with the friction factor defined as a function of the laminar boundary layer. Development of the equation is described first from an empirical trial-and-error approach. Examples are given of actual settling data from the literature versus calculated data to prove the validity of the new equation. Newton's law of resistance of a fluid to flow around a sphere is expressed in Eq. 1. Free settling velocities can be determined by setting Eq. 1 equal to the gravitational force on a particle and solving for V. Experience has shown that when the solids are greater than 1 mm in diam, or when Reynold's number for the system is greater than 800-1000, the friction factor term, fD, essentially becomes a constant, and Eq. 2-b becomes Newton's equation for free-settling and is applicable under the conditions stated. Another special condition exists for particles smaller than 0.05 mm or when Reynold's number for the system is less than three. In this case fD=24/NRor24µ/pL,dV,. Eq. 2-b can then be rewritten as

Major William R. Grunow, in a brief account off his military services, says: "I take pleasure in informing you that since my return from France I have been stationed at Camp A. A. Humphreys, Va., and am now on duty as a Senior Instructor at the Engineer Officers' Training School. While in France, I served as a company commander in the 305th Engineers and was later ordered to return to the United States for assignment to new troops. Upon arrival in the United States, I received my majority." P. F. Rodegerdts gives us the following account of his military service: "I enlisted in the Naval Reserve Flying Corps in San Francisco on Feb. 12, 1918. On February 10, I was ordered to Cambridge, Mass., where I was enrolled for the course in technical aircraft construction given at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After successfully completing the course of instruction, I spent six weeks in practical construction of seaplanes at the Curtiss aeroplane factory in Buffalo. HAVING reached the status of an octogenarian plus, I suddenly decided to take a trip to Great Britain by airplane, before the possibility of hardening of the arteries made such a program too precarious. Of thirty June and July days spent in the islands, five were spent in the south of Ireland, or Eire as the politicians like to call their country. On June 15 I arrived in Glasgow where a day was spent with old friends before moving on to Edinburgh, where the Institution of Mining Engineers was billed to hold its summer session. I had received a cablegram before leaving New York inviting me to attend the sessions which I accepted with avidity, spending three most enjoyable and informative days with old friends and the officers of the Institution, Douglas Hay, president; Ian McDermid, secretary; and members of the council.

Its three main objectives are to organize the subject matter according to basic principles and unit processes; to integrate the underlying science of physical chemistry with metallurgical engineering; and to put greater emphasis on analysis and quantitative solution of engineering problems. Vol. I deals with unit processes, stoichiometry, thermodynamics, fuels, fluid flow, heat transfer, pyrometallurgical systems and refractories. Vol. II will take up the individual unit processes. Initiation and Growth of Explosion in Liquids and Solids, by F. P. Bowden and A. D. Yoffe. Cambridge University Press. $4.50, 104 pp., 1952.-The book is a study of decomposition by impact and by friction of explosive substances and deals mainly with the work of the authors and their collaborators. Research is still in progress but results thus far indicate that the mechanism of initiation is relatively simple. Findings are thoroughly discussed, and the latter part of the monograph describes the way in which a small nucleus of decomposition can grow into a large scale explosion.

In a letter to Prof. L. P. Breckenridge, chairman, urging the continua-tion of the Fuel Conservation Committee of the Engineering Council, Edwin Ludlow calls attention to the millions of tons of culm in the an-thracite region that can be utilized in properly equipped plants and the electricity generated transmitted to. New York, Philadelphia, and other nearby cities. He says: "Experiments have shown the economic value of No. 4 Buckwheat, which passes through a 1/16-in. mesh and over a 1/32-in. mesh. Culm passing through a 1/32-in- mesh is pulverized until it passes through a 300 mesh and is then burned under boilers. Two plants of this kind are now in successful operation in the anthracite region. Another rather interesting experiment was using 30 per cent. of this pulverized coal with 70 per cent. of oil in the generation of steam in the place of pure oil. This utilization of the fine anthracite, which has always been a waste product and thrown away, is not only fuel conservation in its truest sense but in the case of a bituminous strike, when no strike is contemplated in the anthracite field, will furnish fuel to manufacturing plants that otherwise would be obliged to shut down."

NOT only has the demonstration of progress in all fields of science been characteristic of the Chicago "Century of Progress," but the manner in which the fundamentals of these sciences have been displayed captivated the visitor's eye and ear at the same time. The average individual is interested most in progress which concerns his every-day life. He is fairly well educated in medicine, biology and certain aspects of physics. But how raw materials and chiefly minerals occur, how they are located, taken out of the ground and refined, is something which appears to be more remote from the every-day line of interest, and about which, therefore, the public knows comparatively little. This is particularly true of the oil industry, although it ranks in size second only to agriculture in the United States. In appreciation of the tremendous educational value which a complete exhibit on all phases of the mineral industries would have, both mining and metallurgical as well as oil inter¬ests took steps early to make these exhibits at Chicago a reality. The board of directors of the A. I. M. E. authorized an advisory committee to the Museum of Science and Industry early in 1932. It is divided into four subcommittees - for geology and petroleum, for metal mining, for coal mining, and for metallurgy respectively. The entire committee held its first meeting in Chicago on April 11 and 12, 1932, to advise with the Museum's officials and experts about the most advantageous arrangement of the minerals industries' and geology exhibits.

Iraq Petroleum Co. together have produced more than 2,000,000 bbl. from all areas since 1927, most has been returned to the reservoir through the wells. Iraq Petroleum Company's small skimming plant at kirkuk supplies its operating requirements. Drilling Operations The Iraq Petroleum Co., since 1930, has discontinued exploratory drilling and concentrated on the exploitation of the Kirkrik field preparatory to filling its 84,000 bbl. pipe line. Drilling operations are on schedule and the I.P.C. expects to have its initial producing wells ready to turn into the line by April of this year. The Mosul Oil Fields Ltd., holding company of all the shares in the British Oil Development Co., after acquiring the "West Tigris Concession" in May, 1932, has completed a geological survey of its 46,000 square miles and is entering upon an exploratory drilling program with three cable-tool rigs. Petroleum in Iraq Transferred Territories in 1933* The Khanaqin Oil Co., which operates the Naft Khaneh field in the so-called Transferred Territories, has continued to supply the Iraq market with petroleum products during the period under review. The amplitudes and frequencies of vibratiolls of a four-story stucco building were measured by specially developed electrocapacitive seismometers. Records were made on three floor levels with as many as 10 seismometers recording simultancously. Sources of vibration were: (1) an electric motor with unbalanced pulley, maximum speed 1800 r.p.m., maximum centrifugal force 90 lb., (2) truck traffic (both solid and pneumatic tires) moving over inequalities in the street in front of the house, (3) falling weights dropped on the street pavement from different heights, (4) miscellaneous sources, including a man jumping on the floor of the house and slamming doors. Tests were made to determine the natural frequencies of floor and wall panels by varying the speed of the unbalanced motor and by exciting the panels with a single impulse. The vibrations recorded were compared to records of vibrations from quarry blasts and it was observed that the vibrations from truck traffic were comparable to those recorded from quarry blasts and in no instance was there any damage to the building. As the tests were all of a negative character as far as damage was concerned, no index of destruction is formulated. Instead, the records are presented simply as vibration measurements obtained in an ordinary house under typical conditions.
