The resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistance, and absolute thermoelectric properties of some binary terminal solid solutions of silver were determined. Equations are given which permit the calculation of these properties. CONSIDERABLE work has been done on the constitution and electrical conductivity of binary alloys of silver.1-l2 Some of these alloy studies are apparently complicated by doubtful chemical analyses. In some cases the limits of solid solubility are questionable. Those references which present electrical properties of binary silver alloys usually give just one particular set of characteristics such as conductivity (or resistivity). As a means of checking and extending this earlier work, an investigation was undertaken to describe and calculate the resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistance, and thermoelectric power of binary terminal solid solutions of silver. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS All of the alloys were made with silver containing less than 0.014 pet (by weight) of impurities. These materials were carefully weighed out into 225-g heats and melted in a high-frequency induction furnace. The indium, tin, and antimony systems were melted in Al2O3 crucibles, under a boric anhydride cover, and poured into split graphite finger molds. The 37th meeting of the Boston Section was held at the Engineers' Club, on Monday evening, Oct. 2, 1916. Fourteen members and guests attended the dinner. The Society was fortunate in having present not only the announced speaker, J. G. Carleton of Marblehead, Mass., but also a brother member from afar, Thomas Warner of California. Mr. Carleton, who has spent the' past few years in South America, gave an informal talk on the mining of the precious metals on the South American continent. He drew a comparison of the geographical distribution of the precious metals in North and South America and pointed, out the similarity in the geological occurrence of the eastern mining, regions, mentioning particularly Venezuela and Brazil. He also directed attention to the fact that the great placers of the northwestern part of North America had their counterpart in the gold-bearing region of Columbia. The marked contrast between the southern end of North America, so rich in metals, and the southern part of South America, so poor in mineral deposits, was clearly brought out. It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that the South American Cordillera is less intensely mineralized, than the corresponding mountain.

VALUATION of a mine is an approximation of its true cash value which requires the application of fundamental principles of economics. Mines are valued from necessity, for the following reasons: (a) Transfers of titles. (b) Dissolutions of partnerships or corporations. (c) Mergers of mining companies. (d) Appraisals for the purpose of State and Federal taxation. (e) Establishment of the fact of worth as a basis of loans. (f) Determination of values as frequently required in litigation. (g) Listing of stock for sale by a reputable stock exchange. For the majority of purposes a valuation is required as at the present time, but for some purposes valuations as of bygone times may more nearly reflect the intrinsic worth of a mine because its subsequent history can never be, entirely ignored, but valuations made as at the present time are better indicators of cash values. Many mines with great intrinsic worth have been sold for small cash prices. The object of legitimate mine valuations is to deter-mine salable value, or that price in cash at which a transfer of the property from a willing seller to a willing buyer might be consummated, assuming that both vendor and vendee have knowledge of all pertinent data and that the owner, is not forced to sell at a sacri-fice-the definitions of fair market value precluding a forced sale.

(communication to the Secretary*) :—In order to throw some light on this interesting subject, a series of experiments were made with strips of mild steel, containing about 0.14 per cent. of C and 0.22 per cent. of Ma. These strips were thoroughly cleaned and brightened before use, salts were added to distilled water until it corresponded as nearly as possible to the analysis given by Mr. Lee, and in this water at different temperatures were placed four strips of steel; while four other strips, at corresponding temperatures, were placed in the water used at the Washoe Reduction Works. The latter plant has had no trouble from corrosion of furnace-jackets, pipe-lines or boilers. The analysis of the water used at the Washoe works is: Grains er U. S. Gallon. CaCO3........... 2.92 CaSO3........... 0.76 MgCI3........... 0.64 MgCO3........... 0.58 A1203........... 0.12 Fe2O3........... 0.12 SiO2........... 0.58 NaCl........... 0.35 Organic matter, etc.,........ 1.16 7.23 This water is neutral to litmus; while the artificial Copper Queen water was very slightly alkaline, which Mr. Lee informs us is also true of the water at Douglas. Both waters mere well aerated by pouring from beaker to beaker, and by blowing in air from the experimenter's lungs. The results of these tests, given in Table I., show that there is no significant difference between the effects of the two waters.

CLAMER, * PHILADELPHIA, PA.-Unfortunately, prior to the war no serious attention was given to the conservation of tin, notwithstanding that this country is practically dependent upon outside sources for its entire tin supply. Tin is of vital importance in many industries, but it is surprising how many and how excellent are its substitutes when we become acquainted with them. Tin has always been a relatively high-priced metal, and it is part of the human attitude to associate high prices with high standards; it is not until the price of a commodity becomes well-nigh prohibitive that we hunt for substitutes, because the idea of substitution seems always to involve an assumption that the substitute must necessarily be inferior. The history of the development of bearing bronzes is a striking example of this policy. In the early clays, copper-tin alloys were almost universally used, the idea then being prevalent, which is still held by many, that a bearing to resist wear must be hard, and the harder the better. The favorite bronze bearing contained 90 per cent. copper and 10 per cent. tin; frequently, in service which was considered severe, even higher proportions of tin were used.. The Institute conducts jointly with the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Institute of Electrical Engineers, certain activities as listed below, and is joint owner with them of certain properties. United Engineering Trustees, Inc. When Mr. Carnegie made his gift which made possible a home for the engineering societies, a separate corporation was organized to act as a holding company and to manage the common property. This was long known as the United Engineering Society, but the name has now been changed to one which more nearly reflects the real function of the corporation. It holds title to the Engineering Societies Building and to various funds placed in its charge and is managed by a Board of Trustees, of which three are chosen by each of the four societies, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers, which have equal and undivided interests in the property. The land and building cost two million dollars. The interest of the Founders societies, aside from especial trust funds, is now valued at $1,987,793. The A. I. M. E. trustees are William H. Bassett, H. G. Moulton and R. M. Roosevelt. The President of the Board is Harold V. Coes and the Secretary, Alfred D. Flinn.

THE failure to detect any change in the thermal properties of cobalt at the Curie point would appear to indicate that the apparatus may have a limited sensitivity. The Curie temperature has been determined by direct methods to be 1121+3°CP and 1131°C.3 The specific heat has been determined many times'.' and weighted values are given in Table I. The allotropic transformations in iron and titanium, used by the authors to test the experiment method, involved a volume change of the order of 3 pct on going from the close-packed to the body-centered-cubic lattice. These energy changes are likely to be much larger than those involved in a diffusionless transformation from a hexagonal to a cubic-close-packed lattice. However, it has been pointed out that thermal observations are unreliable in the detection of phase changes when these are near a Curie point.' James 0. McCaldin and Pol Duwez (authors' reply)—The sensitivity of the present technique is limited to first-order transformations, so that gradual changes in specific heat, e.g., in the vicinity of Curie points, are not detected. Furthermore, the existence of first-order transformations with latent heats much smaller than those occurring in the known allotropic transformations of iron and titanium is, we agree, still pending.

An experimental investigation was conducted to study the response of soft, porous rock, green shale, under dry and liquid-filled conditions to normal impact of hemispherically-tipped cylindrical steel projectiles with diameter and mass of 6.35 mm and 31 g, respectively. Disk-shaped green shale specimens with nominal thickness and diameter of 32 mm and 127 mm, respectively, were tested in the initial projectile velocity range of 18 to 42 m/s. For the liquid-filled tests, the green shale specimens were saturated with kerosene. A total of eight impact tests were conducted. Information on the extent and pattern of the damage in the rock and velocity histories of the projectiles were collected. It was found that while the penetration depth was quadratically related to the initial projectile kinetic energy for the dry case, the penetration depth for the liquid-filled case was directly proportional to the initial projectile kinetic energy. The results of the impact tests under dry and liquid-filled conditions conformed well to a linearly viscous model and a Coulomb frictional model, respectively. The major deformation processes in the dry specimens were found to be compaction and equivolumnial distortion of the material. In the liquid-filled case, however, formation of cracks and equivolumnial distortion with less material compaction were observed. Furthermore, craters were formed as a result of the crack formation in the liquid-filled specimens.

Since the U. S. Metals Refining Co. works was established, around the turn of the century, near the town which is now called Carteret, N. J., it has grown to be a major producer of refined copper and the main source of that special brand known as "oxygen-free high-conductivity copper." Owing to the complex metallurgical problems arising from handling a variety of raw materials such as copper concentrate from Matahambre, Cuba, copper and brass scrap from the New York area, and domestic blister copper, the organization is geared from top management down through its 2000 employes to maintain a high degree of flexibility in plant operation. The Company is a subsidiary of The American Metal Co. Charges for the smelter furnaces, one reverberatory furnace and one blast furnace, are made up in. bedding bins so that they may be tailored to the production of a constant grade of blister copper. The reverberatory furnace smelts the .sulphide charge, which may be a blend of ten different materials but principally the Cuban concentrate, and the matte from the process is poured into a converter. This reverberatory is 80 by 20 ft, silica lined with a slag bottom, fired by pulverized coal, and continuously side-charged from the top by bottom-dump cars which keep the side walls covered. It produces a 40 to 50 per cent copper matte. The fuel-charge ratio is 4.35 tons of solid charge per ton of coal. The furnace has a capacity of 10,000 tons of charge per month and produces from 5000 to 6000 tons of slag per month which must be disposed of. About 5000 tons of converter slag is produced monthly and returned molten to the reverberatory furnace. TRANSPORTATION is one of the most important problems of the mine operator and the possibilities of cost reduction in this field should not be overlooked. In the railroad industry, cars and locomotives have been improved greatly, and the progress there made is well worthy of study by the mine operator looking for maximum efficiency in every branch of his activities. One of the outstanding developments in the construction of railroad equipment in recent years has been the wide-spread adoption of large one-piece steel castings for the framework of locomotives, passenger and freight cars. Some of the advantages and applications of this type of construction will be outlined in this paper, with particular thought of the needs of the mining industry. The inherent qualities of cast steel: homogeneity, unrestricted size and shape, high tensile strength, flexibility of metal distribution, resistance to corrosion, and gracefulness of outline, make it the most versatile member of the ferrous group. Not only is it a strength-giving element, but it is corrosion resistant, a combination that makes for large economies in equipment maintenance. Flexibility of metal distribution allows the integral foundation to be in the shape best suited for the purpose. These cast structures are really assembled in the mold in liquid form and the metal can be placed in the right pro¬portion exactly where it is needed, thus securing weight economy and uniformity of fibre stress. Such a process permits the incorporation, with ease, of necessary brackets, utilizing them to provide not only greater strength for the derail part itself, but often to add to the value of the entire unit. Laps, seams, and joints, which are necessary in all fabricated forms, are eliminated.

The committee appointed .by W. R. Ingalls, president of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, to nominate candidates for the' annual gold medal of the Society consisted of E. G. Spilsbury, J. E. Johnson, Jr., and Bradley Stoughton. This committee recommended Mr. Schneider of the Creuzot Works in France for achievements in ferrous metallurgy, which recommendation was approved by the Society. From the report of the committee, the following facts relative to Mr. Schneider's career are taken: Born in 1868, Charles Eugene Schneider undertook the management of the Schneider establishment in 1898, after the death of his father, Henri Schneider. Under his enlightened management, the Schneider establishments have been considerably extended, their activity being not only directed to increasing production, but also to spreading more and more their scope for action in all branches of industry-in metallurgy, mechanical and electrical construction, shipbuilding, artillery and ammunition, and in public works. During the 10 years preceding the war, the number of employees in these establishments, and without counting those of the more numerous subsidiaries, increased approximately 50 per cent. CLEVENGER, Palo Alto, Cal.-Since the precipitation of extremely dilute solutions as regards cyanide presents one of the greatest problems of zinc-dust precipitation, I should like to ask Mr. Clark the minimum concentration in cyanide of the solution from which it is possible to precipitate satisfactorily the gold with zinc dust in Homestake practice. A. J. CLARK.-For a day's work about 0.015 per cent. That is precipitating a very low-grade solution, very low in alkalinity. It requires probably 0.2 lb. of zinc dust to the ton. JOHN A. FULTON, Melones, Cal.-At the Melones mine, we have been working very low-grade rock for a number of years, the process being amalgamation and concentration up to the last year. The value of the ore increased so that we had to supplement the concentration with a sand and slime plant. Classification was a problem, since to install classifiers would mean tearing the mill all to pieces. We are therefore making use of a Wilfley table for this purpose. Arthur G. Metcalfe (SOLAR)—Three explanations to account for mechanical nucleation effects are considered in the paper, viz., theories based on fragmentation, agglomeration, and pressure-wave mechanisms. The authors show that none of these mechanisms will explain the results observed with tin and Sn-Pb alloys. A fourth mechanism of nucleation enhancement was developed during work at Armour Research Foundation on casting of beryllium and, although presented briefly on various occasions, the theory has never been discussed adequately. It is believed that this theory will explain many of the observations. Classical homogeneous nucleation theories assume that embryo nuclei are formed in the melt as a result of compositional and/or thermal fluctuations. Stable nuclei are formed when a critical size is reached such that the decrease in free energy for conversion of this volume of melt to solid offsets the increase of surface, energy. The assumption is made that the average properties of liquid and solid metal can be used. In practice this assumption is invalid and indeed is contrary to the postulation of thermal and compositional fluctuations in the melt. Actually the conditions favoring embryo formation bring the seeds of its own destruction—the thermal and compositional fluctuations leave the embryo surrounded by atoms of higher thermal energies and/or by solute atoms that depress the melting point. INTRODUCTION Geostatistics have been used for five years at the B. R. G. M. to compute the ore reserve estimation. At present this technic is also used at the beginning of the exploration project to determine the best way to prove the orebody. The best way is a compromise between the cost of the exploration and the precision of the estimation. It is clear that geostatistics cannot be used without any data, but very often an exploration project is decided on an orebody which has already been drilled. Old data can therefore be used. This was the case this year for two orebodies: an iron deposit and a lead deposit. The iron deposit was explored by drifts and has now to be proved. We used geostatistics to determine the best drilling pattern. The variograms computed with these old data showed that an anisotropy existed between the two directions of the orebody, which meant that the drill pattern had to be rectangular. The lead deposit was explored by drill holes and a short drift in part of the orebcdy. The problem was to choose between a regular pattern of drill holes or a long drift and some added drill holes. The immense commercial value of the Gayley dry-blast process has been established beyond controversy. The testimony of practical blast-furnace managers, on both sides of the Atlantic, agrees that it reduces the cost of pig-iron about $1 per ton; but from the same testimony it appears that this direct economy does not by any means cover its commercial advantages—in fact, that under conditions frequently encountered in practice, it presents other benefits of even greater immediate financial importance. To this point I shall recur in a later part of the present paper. The history of the reception given to this invention, especially on the other side of the Atlantic, has repeated an experience familiar to American engineers. First, the reports of our practice were rejected as theoretically impossible, according to generally accepted notions and formulas; then the figures were reluctantly accepted; and finally the attempt has been made to explain how they could have been obtained. As to the Gayley dry blast, me Americans have been for several years in the last stage of the discussion, and the rest of the professional world is rapidly coming to it. Meanwhile, the remark has been repeatedly made that, whatever Mr. Gayley's process may turn out to be worth, it was not an invention on his part, but simply the energetic and persevering execution of a procedure already proposed by others. This question I wish to discuss first in the present paper. I. What Did Mr. Gayley Invent? Realizing that this is not the place for detailed argument on an issue of patent law, I shall not undertake to quote and criticise the publications prior to Mr. Gayley'a first patents. DISCUSSIONS of trade and commerce are generally more comprehensive today than in the past; the problems are approached with a vision unrestricted by national boundaries, and broad enough to comprise the entire world. The extent to which the limited viewpoint that has characterized past ages is yielding to an economy of world-wide scope is exemplified by the Atlantic Charter which blazes a trail in the direction of trade principles that aim to preserve the interest of each individual country in the commonwealth of nations. Its fourth article promulgated the principle that all nations should have access on equal terms to the trade and to the raw materials of the world which may be needed for their economic prosperity. Future developments in reciprocal international trade may have some effect upon the flow of nonmetallic minerals but such effects are not likely to be great because tariffs and trade policies have not affected that flow profoundly in the past. Nevertheless conditions may change and new problems may arise demanding important decisions. Sudden changes are not to be expected, but rather an orderly evolution in which national interests will merit due consideration in establishing broader policies.

REDUCED activity of mining, because of the business recession, had the effect of lowering working time, hence of reducing exposure to accidents, so it is probable that 1938 will be found to have had a lesser number (both fatal and nonfatal) though the accident rate may remain about the same as in 1936 and 1937. During periods of re-employment, such as occurred during 1936, 1937, and 1938, the new men entering the industry are less experienced and not as well trained in accident prevention as are the older, more experienced men and are frequently subject to more accidents. This situation should tend to correct itself as the new employees be- come better trained.

In an earlier communication, Ref. 1, the authors presented the tensile properties and the changes in crystal structure and microstructure for pyrolytic graphite tested at 2750°C. It was suggested that changes in the structure may have an effect on the tensile properties of this material. Accordingly, tensile tests were run on a series of specimens, from one block of pyrolytic graphite, some of which were hot-worked by being strained at 2750°C, others of which were tested in the as-deposited condition. According to the manufacturer, General Electric Co., the polycrystalline material was deposited at 2100°C on a substrate of synthetic graphite by decomposition of a dilute natural gas mixture. The as-deposited material had a density of approximately 2.19 g per cc, and as shown in Fig. 1 had a structure of medium size growth cones which were regenera-tively nucleated. All specimens had a gage section 0.75 in. long by 0.06 in. wide by 0.1 in. thick with the thickness direction perpendicular to the basal planes. The testing method and equipment used have been previously described, Ref. 2 and 3. For both the hot-working and the testing the load was applied parallel to the basal planes; a cross-head speed of 1.5 x l04 in, per sec was used. All heating was done in an atmosphere of bottled helium.

R. T. Hukki (Finland Institute of Technology, Helsinki, Finland)—Two schools of thought are developing concerning the order of the rate of flotation. The paper by Morris is intended to show experimental evidence in favor of the first order rate. Arbiter, on the other hand, has presented an earlier paper" to demonstrate the validity of the second order rate equation. Unfortunately his method of plotting is open to criticism, as pointed out by Morris." A more sensitive method of plotting has been described by the writer,= whereby the data presented by Arbiter demonstrate the superiority of the second order plot.
