IN gathering material for this book, I have made extensive use of the archives of Phelps Dodge, contemporary news- papers, and a wide range of secondary sources. Two manuscripts-one on the history of Phelps Dodge by Arthur Train, Jr., and John L. Lawler, the other a biography of William E. Dodge by Richard Lowitt-have been of the greatest value. I owe a particular debt to the authors whose names I have just mentioned. I have also gathered important information and obtained revealing points of view from conversations with many people. Personal visits to the company's mines and plants added knowledge and understanding that nothing else was able to supply. A permanent exhibition of mining machinery has just been opened in the Grand Central Palace, New York City. The exhibits include: Aerial tramways, amalgamation, assaying and laboratory appliances and supplies, blast furnaces, coal, coal-breaker plant, coal excavation, coal products, compressed-air plant, concentrating, crushing, cyanidation, distillation, drainage and pumping, drilling, earth excavation, electrical supplies, explosives, fire prevention, flotation, general supplies, hoisting, hygiene, welfare, iron products, leaching, mechanical conveyors, metal products, natural gas, petroleum, petroleum products, electric, steam, hydraulic, gas, air, and internal-combustion engines, power machinery, preparation of coal, pumping, refining, roasting, rock excavation, rotary drilling; boring, safety appliance, screening and washing, sizing and classifying, smelting, storage of coal, storage of petroleum, surface transportation, surveying, underground timbering, underground trans-port, ventilation, mine. This exposition is operated by the Merchants and Manufacturers Exchange of New York for the purpose of showing under one roof all lines of machinery and mechanical appliances. The organization and purpose of the War Minerals Committee was explained in a special war notice in the-August Bulletin. The first work of this Committee is to secure and condense information as to the relative importance of different properties from the standpoint of domestic mineral production. When the possibilities of ore deposits are known, involving, in some cases, further examination through the voluntary services of, Engineers and Geologists, then the necessary policy required to stimulate such development can be determined. Proper recommendation has been and will be made to .the various agencies controlling the situation during the war. This will insure a complete presentation of the needs of the situation. Every legitimate effort will be made to stimulate the production of domestic minerals and to put the industries on a permanent basis. The following information forms indicate the type of information required by the Committee. Engineers and Geologists can assist in one of several ways in furnishing information to the War Minerals Committee:

A full-scale operational test was conducted on the Coaltek preheating and pipeline charging system at the Semet-Solvay Div. of Allied Chemical at Ironton, Ohio, for the purpose of determining whether a high-quality blast furnace coke could be made from blends containing at least 75% Illinois No. 6 Coal and at the same time reduce air pollution during the charging of the ovens. The coke produced had similar physical characteristics as compared to our conventional wet-charged coke, with the exception of smaller size for the preheat coke. Air pollution during charging was con- trolled and there were no serious operating problems. The coking time was reduced 25% from our normal 17 hr for wet charging to 12.8 hr for preheated charges. The blast furnace performance with preheat coke was satisfactory.

Under the designations "industrial talc" and "soapstone" are included earth materials of widely different chemical and mineral compositions. Talc, the mineral, is a hydrous magnesium silicate, with a suggested theoretical formula H2Mg3(SiO3)4 or H2O.3MgO.4SiO2, which postulates 63.5 pct SiO2, 31.7 pct MgO, and 4.8 pct H20.18 Single grains or leaves of talc, however, seem to have variations in water content that range from 3.5 pct to more than 7 pct, as well as slight differences in the proportions of MgO and Si02.20 Most of the industrial talcs produced in the United States do not approach the composition given above (see Table 1), but are essen- [ ]

However, they always contain water of chemical constitution, as shown by Table 1.

Three, major suites of igneous rocks were erupted in the Great Basin in middle and late Cenozoic time. The first resulted in eruption of andesitic rocks in the northern Great Basin between 42 and 34 m.y. ago. Between 34 and 17 m.y. ago this igneous activity migrated to the southwest, ending about 17 m.y. ago with the onset of crustal extension and north-south- trending Basin and Range (rift) faulting. The second volcanic suite erupted between 17 and 8 m.y. ago in the northern Great Basin. The third volcanic suite consists of andesitic and rhyolitic lavas and some basalt erupted between 22 to 7 m.y. ago in the western Great Basin along the northwest transcurrent Walker Lane fault zone. Hydrothermal ore deposits are associated with all suites of igneous rocks.

NO physical impairment can be more serious than the partial or complete loss of sight. With reasonably good eyesight, a person is equipped to care for life and I limb, provided a rational measure of t caution is manifested. When the sight of one eye is lost or badly impaired, one-half of this God-given asset is gone, and extreme care must be taken to prevent the tragedy of total darkness that closes out the beauty of sky, field and mountain, the faces of relatives and friends, and either removes entirely or in part one's capacity to produce and earn. During 1933, The Union Pacific Coal Co., operating ten coal mines in Wyoming, decided to undertake a visual survey of all of its mine operating officials and employees. Although the cost of workmen's compensation paid because of eye injuries was material, the management was more deeply concerned with the social loss and the suffering resulting from the many eye injuries. As every element of coal production cost must be scrutinized, accurate data on all accidents, with the workmen's compensation paid therefor, are carried forward monthly. The number of accidents to eyesight and the resultant compensation paid are shown in Table 1 for nine calendar years:

[ ] Most of the semiplastict fire clay is found in Audrain, Callaway, Montgomery and St. Louis Counties, and in St. Louis. Flint fire clay is found in Callaway, Audrain, and Montgomery Counties and in most of the north central Ozark district. High-alumina [ ] diaspore clay is found only in the north central Ozark district, except a few deposits found in Montgomery County. This paper is concerned with the semiplastic fire clay that occurs in the east central Missouri district near Mexico, Audrain County, Missouri, which is mined by the open-pit method as practiced by the A. P. Green Fire Brick Co. About one-fourth of the semiplastic fire clay in that district is mined in shaft mines, and three-fourths in open pits.

THE chloridizing mill of the Standard Reduction Co. is located about 75 miles south of Salt Lake City on the Tintic branch of the Denver & Rio Grande Western R. R. and 12 miles from the Tintic Standard mine. The daily capacity is 200 tons of a siliceous, low-grade, silver-lead ore from this property. It has operated continuously since it was started in January, 1921. The process consists essentially of a chloridizing roast followed by a percolating leach with a nearly saturated solution of common salt, acidified with sulfuric acid, the precipitation of silver on sponge copper and of copper and lead on tin-plate cuttings. The precipitates are shipped to a smelter. Some of the general ideas involved are said to have been used by Augustin in England, in 1840. A number of textbooks treat of the subject, especially the chloridizing roast followed by a leach with sodium hyposulfite or amalgamation. The process was revived in this district by Theo. P. Holt, N. C. Christensen, the Bureau of Mines, and others.

Scraper With over 40 pet more struck capacity than previous models, the new Caterpillar No. 90 scraper is designed to increase earthmoving production when used with D8 tractor power. This scraper moves dirt with the aid of a hard surfaced, reversible cutting edge. Material is carried in a flat, doublebottom bowl of high tensile steel. Operation is by means [ ] of a cable-control unit, which can be mounted on the rear of the tractor to provide for positive loading and ejection. Tapered roller bearings are installed at each axle. The scraper uses two 24.00 to 29 front tires and two 27.00 to 33 rear tires, all four of 24-ply rating. When loaded, the scraper distributes 60 pet of the weight on the rear tires. Circle No. 1

A great deal of speculation, as well as actual experiment, has been devoted to ascertaining the changes in the materials (luring their descent in an iron blast-furnace, affecting (1) the chemical constitution, (2) the mechanical condition, and (3) the arrangement of the materials. With a view to throw some light upon the third question, we constructed a model and tried experiments which are here described. Our model is a vertical section of a furnace, with the lines of the Edgar Thomson furnace D of 1885 for the use of which we arc indebted to Mr. Gayley. The model is 40 inches high, and made to scale (1/2 inch equals 1 foot), and the horizontal section of the space through which the charge falls at any point in the descent is 11/2 in. x d, d being the diameter of the furnace at that place. Two samples of drilling mud from the Hastings oil field, Texas, were tested, and the solids in each were separated into small fractions of a limited range in particle size. The mineral composition of each fraction by X-ray analysis is reported, and the results are interpreted in relation to other measured quantities, such as the physical properties of the original samples and the density of the various fractions. It was found that only 7 to 8 per cent by weight of the solids was of colloidal dimensions and that neither of the samples contained montmorillonite but did contain illite. Considerable calcite was also found. These data should be useful to the geologist interested in the origin and history of sedimentary strata as well as to the petroleum engineer.

Pennsylvania's existing large coal-fired units are limited to 2.0, 1.8, or 0.6 lb of sulfur per million Btu fired, depending on site location. Multi-stream coal preparation can be employed on system basis to extract the highest quality fraction of coal for use in units requiring the lowest sulfur. The middling fraction can be directed to units permitted higher sulfur. General Public Utilities Corp. has concluded that it is feasible to advance the state-of-the-art of heavy media coal preparation to produce an intensively cleaned primary product of 1.3 sp gr of less than 0.6 lb of sulfur per million Btu for the new unit and a middling product of 2.0 lb of sulfur per million Btu for existing units.

A STUDY of the various ores that have been discussed impresses one with the need of beneficiation, in many cases. This applies to the ores that have lain dormant, due to necessity for further preparation, or to ores that now find a market due to a changed condition. Processes of beneficiation will come into their own as our richer ores become exhausted. Many efforts at improvement have been commercial failures, due to prematurity. Thomas A. Edison, with characteristic foresight, attempted concentration of the low- grade New Jersey magnetites some thirty years ago. Due to high costs and the discovery of the Mesabi range, his efforts were futile. However, a successful crusher, designed by Mr. Edison, resulted from this attempt. Agglomeration of concentrates had not, at that time, been brought to its present efficiency, when sinters and briquettes of excellent physical condition are obtainable. Recent efforts in the beneficiation of the lean magnetites of the East Mesabi resulted in an excellent sinter, but that operation is also ahead of its time.
