THE system molten copper-oxygen-sulphur is of interest from both the practical and theoretical standpoints; practically, because oxygen and sulphur play an important role in the commercial production of copper, and theoretically because it offers a chance to study the reaction between an oxide gas, SO2, and a molten metal. Reactions of this type, such as that between CO or C02 and molten iron, are important in many metallurgical operations. Again, the determination of any gas-metal equilibrium is of theoretical interest and value insofar as it contributes to the general development of the laws for solution of gases in metals. This problem is being given an increasing amount of attention in modem metallurgy. This paper is the first of a series and presents the results of a determination of the solubility of sulphur dioxide in molten copper at temperatures from 1100° to 1500°C., and pressures from about 20 mm. of mercury to somewhat above atmospheric. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK The solubility of gases in most liquids has been found to obey Henry's law, which states that for a fixed temperature the amount of gas dissolved is directly proportional to the pressure. However this law does not hold for liquid metals. Instead, it appears that for many gases, particularly the simple diatomic ones such as 02, N2 and H2, the amount dissolved in liquid metals is directly proportional to the square root of the pressure. This is known as Sieverts' law. It may be recognized as a special case of Henry's law, which applies when the solute gas is dissociated into atoms or when it reacts with the solvent metal to form solute molecules containing single atoms of the gaseous elements, as, for example: [2M -}-G2 = 2MGK =G) IYf X[I]] which, if the solubility is not too high and the concentration of metal therefore nearly constant, can be simplified to: [MG = Ki Pa,[2]] Following the same reasoning, it would be expected that the solubility of SO2 in copper would be proportional to the cube root of the pressure, the reaction being as follows: [6Cu + S02 = Cu2S + 2Cu20[3] K Cu2S X (Cu20)2(Cu)e(Psm)[4]] or, neglecting the change in metal concentration and considering that the concentrations of sulphur and oxygen are both proportional to the volume V of gas absorbed: [K1 =or Vdo,= K2/PBO [5] PsO]

A seam less than four feet. in thickness is generally considered as unworkable, those from which most of the coal now comes being from 8 to 30 feet thick. BALL*—These maps are obvi-~,usly quite helpful in many types of mining engineering, but I want to find out if the prints which you obtain in the first step toward making any aerial contour map have already been corrected for tilt. Is that done afterwards only if you are going into the process of making a contour map ? GEORGE HESS (authors' reply)— The tilt correction is the first step in either compiling the mosaic or compiling the total map. They must be corrected. C. G. BALL—But are the contact prints themselves corrected for tilt? GEORGE HESS—They are not corrected. E. R. KAISER†—I enjoyed this paper very much, and am glad to learn that the methods have a high degree of accuracy and are in use in the coal industry. Accuracy in dimensions is understandable from the paper. Would you tell us how accuracy can be obtained in the vertical dimensions by means of the photographs so as to permit drawing contour lines? GEORGE HESS—To explain our process, even in a limited way, is quite a large order. However, the basic principle involved is the measurement of parallax by viewing two overlapping photographs stereoscopically. It would almost be necessary to have the various instruments here on view to adequately explain their operation. E. R. KAISER—Are the elevations for reference obtained at more than four points ? GEORGE HESS—The pattern of control is four points obtained in the corners. Primarily. that is to restitute the picture and horizontalize it. The vertical control points are read ill on the stereometer and a direct comparison is made while draw- ing the contour lines. You do have to have those four points. But one stereoscopic pair of 5 ft contours has some 340 acres on it, consequently for every four points picked up 340 acres are contoured. E. R. KAISER—How does your method compare with that used by the military reconnaissance during World War II? GEORGE HESS—The Army did not get into this refined mapping. Most of their work has been reconnaissance mapping by taking one vertical and two oblique views. Basically, the same principle is used. Our maps are for engineering purposes. The Army was primarily interested in reconnaissance. E. R. KAISER—You could take more than 48 pictures in one flight? GEORGE HESS—Yes, the Brock camera accomodates 48 pictures per magazine. A little more than a year and a half ago construction started on Canada's largest initial milling plant. Today the zinc concentrating plant 7 miles north of Barraute sits on ground that once was forest and clay flats. The plant is part of Barvue Mines Ltd. zinc-silver operation. Employees of the plant live in the model community of Barvue, built like the plant in record time. About 5000 tons of ore are handled by the plant daily, with an output of 200 tons of zinc concentrate. Management hopes to raise capacity of the $8 million plant to 6000 tons.

Discussion of the paper of FRANK ALFRED FAHRENWALD, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 109, January, 1916, pp. 103 to 149. F. A. FAHRENWALD, Cleveland, Ohio (communication to the Secretary*).-Since the publication of my paper in the January Bulletin, (which was largely a metallographic treatise), I have been questioned regarding two points referred to therein. One of these is that which deals with the application I have made, p. 119, of the equation for melting pressures which correspond with different working temperatures. The other refers to the statement, p. 137, that "Prolonged heating at relatively low temperatures gave fewer and larger crystals and crystals of different sizes, while a flashing at higher temperatures gave a very fine and uniform crystalline structure, which was much' to be preferred." Especial emphasis was not placed upon either of these two factors, for each seemed perfectly logical and obvious. As they do not seem to be self-explanatory, I will supplement with those portions of my notes which were purposely omitted from the manuscript submitted for publication. A few practical illustrations may serve as evidence in support of the first of these, but it must be understood that in this work the "amorphous theory" is considered as being sound, and that it is assumed that metals allow of distortion, without fracture, by virtue of the formation of slip surfaces, accompanied by the transformation of crystalline material to the, amorphous phase. Effect of Pressure.-In all forging, rolling, and drawing operations, it is known that specimens of small cross-section may be worked at a lower temperature than can be used for the same material in much greater mass and sectional area. In -the larger pieces the maximum pressure is brought to bear upon the material near the surface, so that the interior is not subjected to great pressure, but to, a stress more nearly tensile, or shearing, so only the surface is subjected to the critical melting pressure. In the case of wires which draw hollow, the center is subjected to practically a tensile stress which breaks it, while the surface skin draws perfectly, due to the enormous "flowing" pressure exerted upon it by the surface of the draw-plate.

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) IN the course of my professional work in China during the fall of 1907, I had an opportunity to visit the iron-ore mines at Ta-yeh in Hu-pei province (long. 114° 50' E., lat. 30° 20' N.). It occurs to me that a rescript and discussion of my notes taken at that time should be of interest, particularly as supplementing the exceedingly interesting recent paper-of Thomas T: Read on The Mineral Production and Resources of China.1 Ta-yeh is situated near the right bank of the Yangtze river. The mines are at an average distance of about 16 miles from the river-port Shi-hui-yao, which in turn is some 70 miles S-E. of Hankow. The ores are shipped to the works of the Han-Yeh-P'ing Iron & Coal Co. at Hanyang, as also very largely to the Japanese government iron- and steel-works at Wakamatsu, Japan. Smaller quantities have been exported to the Pacific coast of the United States. These ore-deposits have been briefly noticed in a number of publications, but, so far as I know, Mr. Read's description, in his chapter on the iron-ores of the Chinese Empire,2 contains the first attempt to define their geological character. In his more recent paper Mr. Read follows very closely the text of his earlier description. To quote briefly from the recent paper, he says : " The iron-ores at Ta-yeh . . . . lie along the contact between a marble and an intrusive body of a dark-gray syenitic rock." He refers to a figure which exhibits in plan, but not in section, the relative positions of the syenite, ore-bodies, and limestone. The contact is seen to trend approximately E-W., with the syenite on the north and the limestone on the south. " The syenite lies to the north of the marble, and a few miles farther north the marble again' appears, iron-ore again being present along the contact." Discussion of the paper of H. P. HOWLAND, printed in Bulletin No. 111, March, 1916, pp. 627 to 650. A. H. LEE, Buffalo, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*). The statements and results recorded in Mr. Howland's paper can be accounted for by the use of coke with a low sulphur content (0.60 and under). This allows the furnaces to be run on a small volume of acid slag, which it is presumed was done in Mr. Howland's practice. H. A. Brassert has admitted that this was the largest factor in low fuel consumption in his practice. Where the coke contains from 1.00 to 1.25 per cent. of sulphur the situation is quite different and I doubt whether the results mentioned by Mr. Howland could be obtained under such circumstances. ` N. M. LANGDON, Mancelona, Mich. (communication to the Secretary + ).-Gruner's ideal working (which is but a statement of the law first enunciated by Bell) as given in Gordon's Translation of Studies of Blast Furnace Phenomena, "supposes that the reduction of the oxide of iron is effected by the CO only, without intervention of solid carbon." This ideal, if reached, would mean theoretically perfect or 100 per cent. efficiency of reduction. The workings of the large number of furnaces as given in Bell's and Gruner's great works do not show that this standard of perfection ever was reached. This problem has been worked out by the writer for a number of furnaces, and his results, as well as those given by others, all show a failure to reach perfection. Some furnaces, however, approach nearer to perfection than others. The "ideal" as given by Gruner was not stated as a solved problem in blast-furnace practice, but as an ideal to the attainment of which furnace managers should strive. A study of the factors involved from every angle is interesting and instructive and the paper on this subject contributed by H. P. Howland is no exception to the rule. This article is fairly open to criticism, not because of the unique method of presenting the subject, but for the reason that, as the writer conceives, erroneous assumptions are taken which lead naturally to incorrect conclusions.

Frontino operates three underground lode mines at Segovia in the area of northwest Antioquia, Colombia, which has been an important gold producing district since the late 1800s. Auriferous pyrite, the pre-dominent sulfide, carries very finely disseminated gold. Other minor sulfides are galena, pyrrhotite, and sphalerite in quartz gangue with the host rock being granodiorite. Silver is associated with the galena and also occurs as a sulfo-salt. In 1.973 and 1974, at an annual milling rate of 145,000 mt (160,000 st), average mill heads were 7.80 g per mt (0.23 oz per st) Au; 20.0 g per mt (0.58 oz per st) Ag; and 0.37% Pb; with a production of 1,150 kg (35,700 oz) Au and 4,500 kg (141,000 oz) Ag. Over 300 mt (330 st) of Pb concentrate were shipped. The ore is crushed to minus 16 mm (5 18 in. ) and fed to a rod mill with the discharge passing over a 1.07 m by 1.07 m (42 in. by 42 in. ) jig operating in closed circuit with the underflow from a cyclone in closed circuit with two ball mills. Cyclone overflow is bulk-floated for sulfide recovery from which the tailings are sent to the river as waste with the flotation concentrate joining the jig concentrate for cyanidation. The combined gold bearing concentrates, after cyclone classification, are reground to a very fine mesh in closed circuit with cyclone classification, with the overflow going to the primary thickener. Regrinding, classification, and thickening is done in cyanide solution, and the primary thickener produces a pregnant solution for Merrill -Crowe precipitation. The thickener underflow is the feed to the agitators, thickener, and filter from which the overflow and filtrate are sent to precipitation. The washed filter cake is repulped and floated for the recovery of a galena concentrate for shipment. About 40% of the recovered silver is in this concentrate. In the refinery the precipitate is melted into a dore bullion. This 600 mt (660 st) capacity mill employs several interesting techniques. Gold recovery of 85% to 90% from a complex sulfide denotes good practice. While total power at 42 kwh per mt (46 kwh per st) is high, it would be recognized that the grinding units are small in size and the flowsheet is complicated due to the gold occurring in the sulfide minerals. CONSERVATION of mine timber is becoming in-creasingly important, and the consumer is en-couraged to use treated wood to permit longer life of mine timbers, and attempts are also made to substitute other material for wood. The great diffi-culty in substituting metal and concrete props for wood is the inability of these to give yielding resistance to roof pressure as wood supports do. In Europe, where mine timber costs are somewhat more important than in America, many designs of steel props have been tried, but have been unsuccessful, chiefly on account of inability to give yielding resistances. A metal pit prop that gives the desired effect has been extensively used in European mines and has caused a considerable reduction in accidents from falls of roof. Where mining operations have been sus-pended on account of strikes, conditions were found to be much better where such props were used instead of wood props, and machinery, which would have been destroyed by roof falls had wood props been used, was protected by the use of these yielding metal props. As this prop is adjustable, all the work of adjusting and transferring long props through narrow ways is done away with. It can also be drawn with greater ease and safety than wooden props; when properly used it is practically indestructible. European users have reported savings as against wooden props as high as 80 per cent. It gives audible warning of its working because the sliding action takes place in minute jerks. As the prop yields gradually to pressure its force is taken up by friction between the H sections, and this movement progressively increases the resistance of the prop to the increasing roof pressure. In the early development of the prop, it was designed with two steel members a and b of standard H steel sec-tions of equal dimensions provided with guide claws a' and b', held in frictional contact against each other by two differential wedges, f and g, and a floating link, e. In setting up the prop its two members are drawn out to the required length, the loose wedge, g, is then fitted into the space between the left-hand roller of the link d and the lower member of the prop b, and tapped suf-ficiently tight to prevent any relative movement of the two members from taking place prematurely. The prop is then raised to its intended position and secured in the usual way.

FEATURES of the second fall meeting of the Petroleum Division for 1941, held at the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles, Oct. 29-30, were the forum on the Paloma Plan on Thursday after- noon, the large attendance from east of the Rockies, and the dinner on Wednesday evening sponsored by the Southern California Section and at which President Suman spoke on the strategic minerals and metals situation. The attendance was large and the technical fare uniformly good ; the presiding officers had the proceedings well in hand at all times and kept things humming. Some- times it was necessary to taper off the discussion because of pressure on time. All this was due to careful groundwork before the respective sessions. These presiding officers deserve citation: L. W. Huebel, Howard Pyle, E. K. Parks, Carlton Beal, E. G. Trostel. R. W. French, Jr., John Dodge, and H. N. Marsh. The Los Angeles local commit- tees and the Southern California Section deserve much credit for the arrangements, which were recognized by suitable resolutions at the end of the meeting.

W. P. MOULD*—Has consideration been given to the problem of retreating the 4,000,000 ton tailings pile to recover the very considerable amount of asbestos fiber that was lost over the years due to insufficient operation and poor recoveries? Also, what was known about the possible content of chromite and the sulphides of nickel and cobalt? M. J. MESSEL (author's reply)—Consideration was given to the problem but nothing concrete has been done up to this time. W. P. MOULD—I am certain the tail- ings contain a very considerable quantity of fiber, not all of which is in the shortest lengths, because in the milling of talc rock from a neighboring location having a common origin with the asbestos bearing serpentine source of the tailings pile, a concentrate carrying 15 pct Ni and Co in complex sulphides and constituting about 4/10 of 1 pct of the talc rock was recovered. In the belief that the tailings also contained an appreciable content of chromite (then in demand, 1937) it was suggested to the management of the asbestos company that a truck load of the current tailings be sent to the flotation plant of the talc company where it would be put over the concentrating tables in an effort to discover the presence and roughly the percentages of chromite, nickel, and cobalt. Preparations for the test were woefully inadequate and the test was completely snarled up by the surprisingly large quantity of asbestos fiber from 1 in. long down to very short fiber, all of which matted up and plugged launders and pumps with disastrous effects and practically the total loss of the sample. If anything was indicaded by the test, it was that a wet process for milling asbestos was worthy of very serious consideration. M. J. MESSEL—A wet milling process for tailings retreatment only, is at present under study at our plant. One asbestos mining company in Canada has constructed a fairly large test plant for this purpose, but as yet no definite results have been obtained other than in a small test unit plant which were in some respects quite encouraging.

This paper presents an analysis of measurements of inter-burden deformations above six longwall faces. An attempt is made to demonstrate some correlation between the movements at the various sites, and to examine their importance with respect to predicting caving height, disruption of overlying seams, and disruption of aquifers. This analysis demonstrates some significant differences between predicted surface subsidence, and inter-burden deformation. In addition it is shown that the caving height above a longwall face is equal to 8 to 12 times the extraction height, with a zone of fractured rock extending to approximately 50 times the extraction height above the seam.

At the Tenth International Geological Congress, Mexico, 1906, Waldemar Lindgren presented "The Relation of Ore Deposition to Physical Conditions." Retrospect ranks it as the outstanding offering at that Session and as the most fundamental contribution up to that date on the philosophy of ore deposition. Elaborating thereon in his text-book "Mineral Deposits," Lindgren analyzed ore-forming processes under conditions prevailing from great depth up to surface; explained the nature of deposition in each environment; and developed a comprehensive genetic ore classification, which brought wide acceptance and enriching contributions by many. Since Lindgren's latest edition (1933), have come wealths of material relevant to ore genesis, particularly through amazing renaissance and proliferation throughout science. Current publication regarding ores now emanates largely from a generation caught in pressures of the breathless modern tempo, which tempts scant reflection upon earlier truths. Consequently, today's thrilling output contains not a few offerings that need challenge because supplanting interrelationship and system by what seems, collectively, an assemblage of strange, ad hoc and often self-contradictory concepts. From these latter some merit may eventuate but at the probable cost of present confusion and delayed progress. The following pages, naming numerous post-Lindgren advances, record the conviction, held by many, that Lindgren's philosophy, progressively improved, remains the soundest approach to understanding ore genesis.

IRON ORE is widely distributed throughout the world. Ores sufficiently high in iron content to be practical for the operations of iron and steel making occur in so many places that it is only by the accident of political subdivisions that any given nation does not have adequate and suitable iron ore. Data prepared by various authorities show that in the Lake Superior region alone there are reserves of 1,200,000,000 tons of iron ore of an iron content and at the level of production cost to which the industry has been accus tomed. At an annual consumption of 80,000,000 tons these reserves will last fifteen years. Taken alone these figures would be alarming, but over a considerable period of years the total reserve tonnage has been more or less steadily increased by improvement and extension of mining and beneficiation methods. The rate of depletion of reserves has been only about one third of the rate of consumption. On this basis the cheap high-grade ores of Lake Superior would last 45 years.

Silver ore was first discovered in 1866 at Manhattan, and a few ore shipments were treated in a mill at nearby Belmont. The district was abandoned from 1869 to April 1, 1905, when rich gold float was discovered on what was to be called the April Fool claim. By early 1906, 4, 000 people lived in Manhattan. The San Francisco earthquake, in April of 1906, caused the withdrawal of capital from Manhattan and most of the mines were shut down. Later that year and in 1907, however, more strikes were made. The camp prospered until the mid-1920s, but a steady production of several hundred thousand dollars per year was sustained even during the great depression. Then, in 1939, Nevada's first bucket-line dredge was installed below the town and operated until 1947, producing $4.6 million in gold. The Houston International Minerals operation at Manhattan was started in July of 1980 at a throughput of about 545 mt per day (600 st per day). In contrast to the early day underground operations, Houston's mine is open-pit and processes low-grade disseminated ores. The ore is a metamorphic schist containing 2. 7 g Au and 1. 03 g Ag per mt (0. 08 oz Au and 0. 03 oz Ag per st). Some coarse gold, up to 1 mm in size, is present. Mining and haulage is done by a contractor. Stockpiled mine-run ore is crushed in three stages comprising a jaw crusher and two cone crushers, with screens ahead of the cone crushers. Crushed product, at about 19 mm (3/4 in.) size, is stored in a silo. Grinding is by single stage ball mill with the discharge passing over two hydraulic traps for coarse gold removal. These traps will be replaced in late 1980 by a two-cell Pan American jig treating the cyclone underflow. The jig hutch product, along with the hydraulic trap product that has been stored, will be treated further for gold recovery. The gravity tails will then be cycloned with the underflow being recirculated in the ball mill and the overflow being treated by flotation. A rougher concentrate is made in twelve No. 48 Galigher cells with the float tails being cycloned. Cyclone underflow is refloated in another four No. 48 cells; the overflow is treated in sluice boxes for further gold recovery before being sent by gravity to the tailings pond. Bulk flotation concentrates are cleaned three times with the final concentrate being thickened. The thickener underflow is then batch cyanided in mechanically agitated tanks and washed with barren liquor

THE Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co., located in the Globe-Miami district at Inspiration, Ariz., became a producer of copper in 1915. From 1915 until 1948, 116,278,000 tons of ore were produced from underground workings by the block-caving system of mining. In April 1948, open-pit ore production from portions of the ore body was started and earlier plans for block-caving in these areas were abandoned. The change was due to economic conditions.

THE objective of this investigation was to determine the high-temperature plastic deformation behavior of stoichiometric uranium mononitride as a function of stress and temperature. Interest in the properties of this material stems from its potential use in high-temperature nuclear reactor systems. The creep of other refractory compounds containing uranium (e.g., U02, UC) has been studied by various investigators.1"4 Fassler et al.4 have studied the creep of UN in vacuum from 1100° to 1350°C at stresses of 6000 and 8000 psi. In the present work, the creep of stoichiometric UN was investigated from 1500° to 1800°C at stresses from 2000 to 5000 psi in a partial pressure of 200 mm of nitrogen. The specimens were prepared by hot isostatic pressing of UN powder into cylinders of $ in. diam by about 1 in. high. After pressing, the specimens were heat-treated in nitrogen at 1900°C for 50 hr. The densities of individual specimens were determined by the water displacement method. All specimens were theoretically dense, based on a value of 14.32 g per cu cm.5 Principal metallic impurities in ppm by weight were: Ca, 50; Cu, 5; Fe, 30; Mg, 5; Ni, 10; and Si, 20. Oxygen content was 400 ± 50 pprn and carbon content was 100 i25 ppm. The nitrogen content was 5.56 ±0.05 wt pct. The average grain size for five specimens, as determined by the intercept method, was 0.14 i 0.01 mm. One specimen had a grain size of 2.0 mm. This large grain size is an anomaly, since all specimens had the same chemical and thermal histories. Specimens of 1/4 in. diam by 1/2 in. high were creep-tested in compression in a clam shell furnace heated by W-25 pct Re sheet elements. Temperature was measured to ilODC by an optical pyrometer which had been calibrated by a standard source. The distance between fiducial marks on the specimen was measured before placement into the furnace. The furnace chamber was evacuated to 10-5 Torr and back-filled to 200 mm N2. After heating rapidly to temperature, the load was applied and controlled to ±2 pct by an Instron testing machine. Upon initial loading, the specimen was deformed until a constant crosshead rate was obtained, then quenched to room temperature, remeasured, and replaced in the furnace. Upon subsequent reloading at temperature, the crosshead rate was constant for the selected condition indicating steady-state creep.

Three. meetings for the presentation and discussion of papers were held in 1914, as follows: The 107th Meeting, including the Annual Business Meeting, in New York, Feb. 16 to 19; the 108th Meeting, Aug. 10 to 14, in Salt Lake City, and the 109th Meeting, Oct. 8 to 10, in Pittsburgh, Pa., under the auspices of Iron and Steel Committee, Committee on Coal and Coke, Committee on Petroleum and Gas, Committee on Non-Metallic Minerals. Local Sections ' Three new local sections were established during the year, namely; / Pennsylvania Anthracite Section, Chicago Section, and Utah Section.

VRD started producing pellets in 1969 with one 2-million-t straight grate plant. In the beginning of April 1973, the second unit came on stream with an additional capacity of 3 million t/a of pellets. In January 1977, the third unit started, bringing the annual capacity to 8 million t/a. In the coming year (1978-79), three more units, 3 million t each, are expected to begin production. CVRD's experience with different binders and additives is described. Over the years several kinds of pellets have been produced to satisfy market requirements. General quality information is given for each.
