IN this survey of the progressive development (of education for the mineral industries throughout the United States, the review of .the history of each school has usually been completed wherever it is first mentioned, but the history of the schools in the cities of the eastern seaboard was not carried beyond 1870. It is necessary now to cover what happened during the period of approximately the last quarter of the nineteenth century in several of the schools in the east. Philadelphia Of Philadelphia, it has been related in chapter 4 that the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania began offering a curriculum leading to the B.S. in mining in 1853; that the school did not prosper, and finally closed about 1890. The establishment of a Department of Mining, Arts, and Manufactures at the University of Pennsylvania in 1855-56 was also mentioned, but its history was not carried beyond 1860. In 1859 J. Peter Lesley was appointed professor of mining in the University of Pennsylvania. The son of a cabinetmaker, born in Philadelphia Sept. 17, 1819, he had taken his A.B. degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1838 and then secured a position on the Geological Survey of Pennsylvania under H. D. Rogers. When the Survey was discontinued, in 1841, he went to Princeton to study theology, was ordained a Presbyterian minister and followed that career until 1852, when the Pennsylvania, Geological Survey was again started and he rejoined its staff. He published "A Manual of Coal and its Topography" in 1856, and studied at the École des Mines, Paris, in 1856-57. He published an 800-page "Iron Manufactures Guide" the year that he was appointed to the staff at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1863-64 a College of Agriculture, Mines, Arts and the Mechanic Arts was established, but it was not a separate school

Whole-rock analyses of limestones, fine-gralned dolostones and coarser-grained dolostones adjacent to mineralized breccias (Coy mine, Mascot-Jefferson City district) were compared with similar lithologies adjacent to apparently non-mineralized breccias at the new Thorn Hill section located approximately 39 km north of the Coy mine. Specimens were analyzed for Ca, Mg, Si, Al, K, Fe, Mn, Sr, Br, C1, S, Ti and P using X-ray fluorescence analysis. The concentrations of the major and most minor elements for Thorn Hill specimens fall within the range of concentrations for Coy mine specimens; however, significant differences (probability < 0.05) were noted for Fe, C1 and Br for fine-grained dolostones and for MgO, Fe and Mn for the coarser-grained dolostones. No significant differences were detected for the limestones.

Until recently porous bronzes have found many applications for self-lubricating bearings in the automotive, electrical, household appliance and general machine industries. The bulk of an annual production of several million pounds of copper powder had gone into the manufacture of these articles, of which by now more than a billion are in service. However, the war has brought severe curtailment of these bearings because of the scarcity of the two main constituents, copper and tin. The development of substitute materials of equal or superior properties has led to a large-scale replacement by products made from iron powder. In spite of the diminished interest in powdered copper-tin alloys caused by this trend, it was believed worth while to investigate some mechanical properties of these materials as a reference base for substitutes. In addition, experiments using the hot-press method were incorporated to investigate possibilities of saving vital equipment or opening new fields of applications. It must be assumed that by this time the powder metallurgy process of making porous bronzes, a development that found its first industrial applications more than 10 years ago, is well known in engineering. The patent literature and bibliography is volu- minous, most publications referring to porous, self-lubricating bronzes, containing about 10 per cent tin and I to 5 per cent graphite, with porosities in the range of 25 to 35 per cent.l-7 The excellent antifriction properties of these bearings, caused by the uniform impregnation with oil, are dependent on the interconnection of the pores and the uniform distribution of the graphite inclusions. The sintering mechanism of porous bronze, with its structural changes during the transformation of the metal powder into the sintered bearing has been shown in colored photomicrographs by Hall.* Diffusion between copper and tin was found to begin within one minute, when tin-rich transitory phases were formed. After 25 min. a homogeneous matrix of alpha was reached for an alloy containing 9.5 per cent tin and 6 per cent graphite. Price, Williams and Garrand,9 studying certain metal powder combinations in which sintering is accompanied by the cementing action of a liquid phase, including a 90-10 bronze sintered at 925°C., have found that if the treatment is carried out within the liquidus and solidus temperature range of the system, a peculiar process of alternate solution and precipitation occurs. The particles of the major solid constituent are dissolved in the minor liquid phase, but thereafter are reprecipi-tated on certain nuclei, which develop into large grains, usually rounded.

THE mechanism by which the super-saturated solid solution of 20 per cent silver in aluminum decomposes has been reported in two previous publications. 1,2 The analysis of streaks in Laue photograms showed that thin platelike particles (the so-called Guinier-Preston aggregates) form upon {111} matrix planes in the early state of decomposition.1 The size of these particles is larger, the higher the temperature at which they form in accordance with nucleation theory;3 at all temperatures they increase in size with aging.2 When they have grown thick enough to afford three-dimensional diffraction, powder X-ray photograms show that the structure is not that of the equilibrium precipitate y but that of a transition lattice ?&apos;. Since this is also platelike in shape and also lies upon the {111} matrix planes with the {110} direction in the matrix parallel to the {11.0} direction in ?&apos;, it seems likely that the original platelet particles are merely ?&apos; in an early stage of formation, and thus finely dispersed. The atomic spacing and pattern on the {00.0} plane in ?&apos; are identical with those on the {111} matrix plane to which it lies parallel, and since comparable directions in the two planes are parallel, the lattices are thus coherent at the interface; an analogous coherence has been found in aluminum-copper alloys.3 The structures ?&apos; and y are both close-packed hexagonal and are oriented alike; they differ only in interatomic distances. Consequently, ? &apos; is regarded as y strained from its ordinary dimensions by the lattice coherency between it and the matrix.2 The lattice movements that transform the matrix to the equilibrium precipitate appear to be very simple.2 The mechanism of precipitation in this system is simpler and is more precisely known than that in any other system,2,4 hence the system should be a profitable one for the difficult task of correlating property changes with structural alterations. The present report provides additional studies on powder X-ray diffraction from alloys of 10 per cent, 20 per cent and 30 per cent Ag, and presents the correlation of crystallographic changes with changes in microstructure, Brinell hardness and electrical resistivity of the three alloys. The thermodynamics of the cadmium-rich portion of the Pu-Cd system has been studied with a high-temperature galvanic-cell method. The partial phase diagram of the Pu-Cd system was determined. The existence of the intermediate phases PuCd11 (cubic BaHg11 structure, ao= 9.282) and PuCd6 (cubic, CeCd6 structure, a, = 15.59) was established. The existence of at least one other intermediate phase richer in plutonium was indicated. PuCd11 was found to peritectically decompose into PuCd6 and liquid at 406" * 2°C. The solubility of plutonium in liquid cadmium may be represented by the equations: (355&apos; to 399°C) log (at. pct Pu) = 6.223 -4282T-1 (399° to 632°C) log (al. pct Pu) - 5.148 - 5277T-1 > 1.156 x 106 T-2 The free energy of formation values (kcal per mole) of the two intermetallic phases are given by the equations: (PuCd11), ?Gf= -45.9 + 35.7 x 10-3 T (PuCd6), ?Gf0- -39.27 + 25.86 X 10-3T The excess free energy (kcal per mole) of plutonium in liquid cadmium may be represented by the equation: -(-16.72 * 29.54 NPu) 10-3T in which Npu and Ned are the atom fractions of plutonium and cadmium. The thermodyanamics of the U- Cd and Pu-Cd systems are compared. THERMODYNAMIC information on systems of the actinide metals with low-melting metals, such as zinc and cadmium, is useful in the design of pyro-metallurgical processes for the purification of nuclear reactor fuels. The thermodynamics of the Pu-Zn,1 Th-Zn.2,3 U-Zn,4-5 and U-Cd6 systems have been reported. The present report on the Pu-Cd system concerns the liquidus composition in the cadmium-rich region, the characterization of the two most cadmium-rich intermetallic phases, and the thermodynamic properties of these intermetallic phases and dilute liquid solutions of plutonium in cadmium. EXPERIMENTAL Phase Studies. The liquidus composition was determined by analysis of filtered samples of the liquid phase withdrawn at a series of temperatures. The apparatus and procedure were identical to that used in the previous study of the Pu-Zn system.&apos; Briefly. a sample of the melt was withdrawn into a tantalum tube fitted with a porous tantalum filter (30-µ pore). the entire sample dissolved in hydrochloric acid (to avoid errors due to segregation

THAT small amounts of impurities have a harm-J- ful effect on the malleability of metals and alloys is well-known. One common type of em-brittlement involves the formation of a small quantity of eutectic at the grain boundaries, and is typified by sulfur embrittlement of nickel. Another example of eutectic embrittlement—sulfur embrittlement of cobalt—is described in this report. In the preparation of specimens for a study of Co-Pt alloys, it was observed that the hot swagabil-ity of the alloys appeared to be influenced by the grade of cobalt used as melting stock. The cause of the hot-shortness was not traced to any particular impurity, although sulfur was suspected.&apos; The damaging action of sulfur on the malleability of cobalt has not been generally recognized,&apos;; in spite of the fact that the Co-S phase diagram8 eveals the same basic conditions—low solubility and eutectic formation—responsible for sulfur embrittlement of iron and nickel.7, 8 Apparently sulfur embrittlement has not been a serious problem in the fabrication of cobalt alloys. One related factor is likely the limited commercial experience with high cobalt alloys, since the predominant use of cobalt has been in alloys containing less than 75 pet Co. A series of Co-S alloys was prepared and studied to establish the effect of sulfur on the hot working characteristics of cobalt. Specimens, 5/8 in. diam by 4 in. long, were prepared by vacuum melting in magnesium oxide crucibles and casting in a copper mold. Two grades of low sulfur electrolytic cobalt were used as the basic material for the study, one from Johnson, Matthey and Co. and the other from the International Nickel Co. Each contained about 99.5 pet Co and had a nominal sulfur content under 0.005 pet. The sulfur was added initially as cobalt sulfide powder. Later, some low sulfur alloys were prepared by diluting the high sulfur alloys with cobalt. Trouble was experienced in controlling the sulfur content. Apparently much of the cobalt sulfide powder was lost during melting, as most of the samples contained a lower sulfur content than was added. The alloys were evaluated for hot brittleness by heating to 1000°C in a hydrogen furnace and swaging in air. The results of these tests are summarized in Table I. All the alloys containing less than 0.008 pet S were successfully hot swaged to 1/4 in. diam. The bars containing more than 0.015 pet S could not be swaged because of the formation of intercrystal-line cracks similar to those illustrated in Fig. 1. Examination of the microstructure of the cast bars revealed cobalt sulfide eutectic at the grain boundaries, Fig. 2. The sulfide was not always continuous at grain boundaries in bars that were hot embrittled but, in general, the particles did form a network that could account for the brittleness above the eutectic temperature, 880°C. There is no question about the brittle nature of a specimen exhibiting a continuous sulfide network such as is shown in Fig. 2b, though a sulfide distribution similar to that in Fig. 2a is marginal. This particular bar cracked when hot-swaged. However, other bars with lower sulfur content but with some sulfide phase at grain boundaries were successfully worked. The reduction of area of a hot tensile test specimen was also found to be a sensitive indicator of sulfur embrittlement. The variation of reduction of area with sulfur content is shown in Fig. 3 for specimens fractured at 900°C in an evacuated capsule. The ductility of cobalt is greatly reduced when the sulfur content exceeds 0.005 pet. Similar results were obtained for alloys tested at 800°C, below the eutectic temperature. South Texas, one of the world&apos;s important oil and gas-producing areas, continued to hold interest during 1939 as another scries of new fields and new producing levels was developed within its boundaries at a fairly continuous rate throughout the year. There were 1801 wells drilled in this area in 1939, compared to 1678 in 1938; of these, 1515 were drilled in established fields, or as extensions to proven areas (semi-wildcat), and 286 were drilled as rank wildcats, in search of new production. Among these rank wildcats, 22 produced oil, 7 produced distillate and gas and 257 were abandoned as dry holes (see Table 5). Of the 1515 field and cxtension wells, 1213 produced oil, or distillate and gas, 50 produced only gas and 252 were dry; 38 found new productive sand levels in proven ficlds. Jim Wells County led this district in discoveries, having had 9 new fields arid 9 new productive sands found within its border during 1939. Most activc of the 1939 discoveries were Reynold?; and Ben Bolt fields in Jim Wells County and Minnie Bock field in Nueccs County; among producing fields the most activc were: East White Point and Aransas Pass (McCampbell). Production from South Texas in 1939 totaled 55,105,506 bbl. against a total of 56,152,122 bbl. produced in 1938. South Texas should continue its present rate of developrnent and exploration and this should result in the discovery of many fields in its numerous oil-bearing zones, and should also lead to more knowledge of the possibilities of its deeper horizons, such as the Mt. Selman and Wilcox formations; with the latter holding particular interest at the present time. Tide Water Associated Oil Company&apos;s A. M. Bruni No. I, Cole-Bruni field, Webb County, the deepest well drilled along the Mirando trend, was carried to 8959 ft., where it started to blow out from a Wilcox sand topped at 8954 ft., making gas, distillate and mud under heavy pressure. After the well was killed, drill stem beeame stuck and was cemented in place in order to test a Queen City (Mt. Selman) sand logged from 5620 to 5675 ft. This and other shows found in other wells along this trend, but out of this district, have served to increase the importance of this but little explored Sparta-Wilcox trend of South Texas during the year, and more activity along it is to be expected in the near future.

A remarkably simple construction system that derives its internal stability from metal straps buried in backfill is finding diverse mine applications, ranging from rock crusher headwalls to massive slot coal storage facilities. Reinforced Earth (Re/Earth), the system trade name of Reinforced Earth Co., is proving itself 20-50% less expensive than alternative earth embankment structures, and in the case of cast-in-place concrete walls, six to seven times faster to erect. While the majority of applications are in the realm of civil engineering-projects such as retaining walls, bridge abutments, slide buttresses, and containment dikes-a growing proportion is mine related. Of the estimated 120 Reinforced Earth projects that will be completed this year, company president David P. McKittrick expects mining to account for about 20% of the business volume.

The US Bureau of Mines is currently engaged in research to characterize complex, low-grade western phosphate rock and to develop methods for economic recovery of phosphate, as part of a government effort to assure an adequate supply of fertilizer minerals. Western phosphate varies from soft, friable, altered phosphatic shale to hard, tightly cemented, unaltered phosphate rock. To supplement current methods of beneficiation (normally restricted to sizing), the USBM has developed a flotation procedure that includes depression of phosphate minerals with H2SiF6 and anionic flotation of carbonate minerals, followed immediately by cationic flotation of silicate minerals. Tested on several different ore types, the procedure has yielded phosphate concentrates that range in grade from 28 to 31% P2O3 with a phosphate recovery factor of 60 to 70%.

MANY oil producers are in disagreement with the idea held by some that an increase in the price of crude oil would be unlikely to stimulate much production and that we will be obliged to draw upon foreign sources of petroleum to supplement our domestic production as the years go by. Supporting our con trary opinion are numerous facts and figures. The most recent official estimate of the maximum efficient rate of production from the oil wells of the United States is 5,271,000 bbl per day. The Economics Advisory Committee of the Interstate Oil Compact Commission estimates, assuming certain supplies from imports and from natural gasoline and benzol, that crude oil require-

The North Texas district incorporated in this paper corresponds with the Railroad Commission&apos;s District No. 9, and includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Knox, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger, and Young.† Table I,Oil and Gas Production in North Texas District, has been changed to conform with the nomenclature of pools designated by the Commission in order to facilitate compilation of the data, since most of the companies operating in the area are coming more and more to recognize one central authority in the matter of naming each new oil pool. No effort is being made to discuss the structural characteristics of the region, since it is generally known by oil men that most of the oil and gas comes from Pennsyl-vanian, with some of less importance from the Mississippian and Ordovician. Development during 1944 There were 1550 wells drilled during 1944, an increase of 450. Of this number, 677 were completed as oil wells, and 11 as gassers. Production increased 1,505,025 bbl., making the year&apos;s total 43,172,005 bbl. of oil having an average gravity of 40". Development generally, however, was somewhat disappointing. The 47 new pools, extensions, or new pay horizons in old fields, had a combined initial production of only 19,146 bbl. It is estimated that these wells added approximately 10,000,000 bbl. to the reserves. The largest single addition to the reserves was in the Caddo conglomerate in the Hildreth pool, Montague County. During the year, 66 wells were completed as the result of three extensions, I to 136 miles west, northwest and north of the field. Young, Archer, and Clay were the most active counties. Eleven new potential - oil fields were developed in Young County, nine in Archer and nine in Clay. Outlook for 1945 In spite of the fact that exploration as a whole was disappointing in 1944, prospects for increased development are bright for 1945. At the close of last year, 2.1 geophysical crews were operating in the district, which, together with the Ohio Oil Company&apos;s No. I W. R. Ross, a wildcat Strawn discovery in King County, 1 1/2 miles beyond the west boundary of district 9, stimulated a lease play extending over four counties. An investigation of the effect of size on the deformation properties of metal single crystals made it desirable to grow from the melt cylindrical aluminum single crystals possessing exactly the same crystallographic orientation but varying in diameter. Methods for the growth of rather large (up to 3 in. diam) aluminum single crystals in molds of the desired shape are well known. However, when one applies the same techniques to the growth of smaller (less than 1/8-in. diam) specimens many additional problems arise. Two of the major problems are the construction of the molds to be used and the removal of the thin specimens from these molds without deformation after growth has been completed. Also the problem of the constraint forces exerted by the mold on the specimen is much more pronounced for the smaller specimens. The technique described herein is a zone-melting method in which no mold is used since the surface tension of the molten metal and its oxide is sufficient to retain the melt. The specimen is suspended vertically in a manner similar to that of Keck and Golay.2 However, while Keck and Golay supported the specimen from both ends, the method used here supports the specimen only at the upper end. The surface tension of the molten aluminum and aluminum oxide contains the melt and suspends a length of newly grown crystal that has already passed through the molten zone until the weight of the newly grown crystal is equal to the component of surface tension holding the specimen together in the molten region. When the weight of the newly grown crystal is equal to the component of surface tension holding the specimen together the specimen pulls in two in the molten zone. The length of crystal which can be grown before this separation occurs varies with the diameter of the specimen and the size of the molten zone. In order to prevent the specimen from pulling in two a tube of glycerine is placed beneath the furnace in such a manner that the newly grown crystal passes into the glycerine which provides sufficient buoyancy to allow aluminum single crystals in wire form to be grown to lengths determined only by the length of the tube containing the glycerine. A schematic diagram of the experimental arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. The furnace used is constructed as follows. High-resistance nichrome wire is coiled on a 3/8-in. diam fused quartz tube. The distance between the windings is much less over a length of about 3/8 in. at the center so as to develop a hot spot. This core is located in the center of a 4-in. diam steel cylinder 5 in. in height and insulated from it by Kayolite. The temperature of the furnace is controlled by means of a thermocouple located near the central hot spot and a Minneapolis-Honeywell temperature controller. Temperature ins,ide the furnace is measured with a thermocouple and a standard potentiometer in the usual manner. By the above method it is possible to grow high-purity (99.99 pct Al) aluminum single-crystal wires over a range of sizes. Crystals varying from 1/8 to 1/64-in. diam were grown by the authors. Since the tube containing the glycerine cannot contain a crystal longer than approximately 3 ft, the growth of crystals longer than this presents another problem. COPPER ore from Kennecott Copper&apos;s Ray mine, about 60 miles southeast of Phoenix, Ariz., is concentrated at the company&apos;s mill at Hayden, some 18 miles south of the mine. The Hayden mill is currently treating 16,000 tons of ore per day by flotation, using raconite, a crude butyl xanthate, as a collector for the sulfide copper minerals and lime as a pyrite depressant.1 The ore contains significant amounts of nonsulfide copper minerals, but recovery of these values has been low. The Hayden mill is now being modified to provide for treatment of future ores by leach- precipitation-flotation (L-P-F). This modification, costing about $5 million, is expected to reduce the loss of nonsulfide copper values and improve overall copper recovery by an additional 2 lb per ton of ore.

Faults, sandstone channels, and abandoned mine workings present severe safety hazards, disrupt mining, and necessitate costly precautions or discontinuance of operations. In addition to fault detection, mining companies have a need to map discontinuities such as seam thinning and previously mined areas in both longwall and room-and-pillar operations. Initial field tests demonstrated successful generation and propagation of higher order guided wave modes. Theoretical studies indicate potential for improved resolution by sensing small details in the coal seam and roof structure. Controlled-waveform source transducers and specialized detectors are particularly useful to preferentially excite and detect the Love (SH) and Rayleigh-type (P-SV) waves, including the higher frequency modes. The distinct observation of reflections using the transducers in the shear wave mode makes feasible the detection of the water-filled voids.

THE Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co., located in the Globe-Miami district at Inspiration, Ariz., became a producer of copper in 1915. From 1915 until 1948, 116,278,000 tons of ore were produced from underground workings by the block-caving system of mining. In April 1948, open-pit ore production from portions of the ore body was started and earlier plans for block-caving in these areas were abandoned. The change was due to economic conditions. Prior to the war years Inspiration&apos;s costs of mining by block-caving methods were comparable to, or even below, the costs of some open-pit operations. By the end of the war these conditions were completely changed. Underground costs had risen steadily for labor and supplies. Difficulty was being experienced in finding competent underground men and underground development was almost hopelessly behind schedule. On the other hand, open-pit costs had been sharply reduced through the development of modern earth-moving machinery and plenty of labor was available for surface work.

[ ] S. H. Ash (Mining Industry Continues with Lower Fatal-Injury Rates, P. 257) was born in Roslyn, Wash. and attended Lehigh University and University of Washington. He received a B.S. and E.M. degree in mining engineering. Mr. Ash was supervising engineer in charge of work of Safety Div., Bureau of Mines, eastern Pennsylvania and the states of N. Y., Del., N. J. and the New England states. He was appointed chief engineer of Metal and Nonmetal Mining Section of the Mineral Production Security Div., Bureau of Mines, July 1942. At present he is chief engineer, Safety Branch, U. S. Bureau of Mines. Besides holding membership in AIME, he is a member of National Honorary Engineering Society, Society of American Military Engineers, Tau Beta Pi and many other societies.
