RECENT developments in the Turner Valley gas and oil field, 40 mi. southwest of Calgary, Alberta, have indicated a large producing crude-oil area. Drilling be¬gan in Turner Valley in 1913 but no major developments took place until the fall of 1924, when Royalite No. 4 well at a depth of 3740 ft. in the upper part of the Paleozoic (Mississippian) limestone obtained a production - of 20,000 M cu. ft. of gas with a content of about one imperial gallon of naphtha (73° A.P.I.) per M cu. ft. This well produced as much as 600 bbl. of naphtha per day, and until abandonment in 1934 produced 911,313 bbl., which together with the gas sold was valued at about $5,000.000.

The steady-state kinetics and microstructures of simultaneous internal oxidation and external scale formation were investigated for the oxidation of Cb-Zr and Ch-Zr-Re alloys in pure oxygen at 1000°C. For each binary alloy, a constant rate of scale formation was observed at steady state; the internal oxidatton zone reached a steady-state, time-independent thickness. The dependence of the scaling rate on zirconium content exhibited a maximum at a low zirconium colttent; more concentrated alloys oxidized at a slower rate than pure columbium. This composition dependence of the scaling rate may be partially attributed to the effect of the internal oxidation process as an intenla1 sink for oxygen, with the formation of voluminous, and relatively impermeable ZrO2 precipitates. However, the morphologies of the ZrO2 internal oxide precipitates also affected the scaling rate. The internal oxide precipitates were distributed uniformly in the external scale. The steady-state thicknesses of the internal oxidation zones were not in agreement with those predicted theoretically from an idealized simple model. However, in this particular alloy systen1 the ideal model is not satisfied experitmentally. For ternary Cb- Zr - Re alloys with Nr10e = 0.02 or 0.05, the steady-state thicknesses of the internal oxidation zones were less than those for the corresponding binary Cb-Zr alloys. For ternary alloys with NRe(0) - 0.05, a more adherent and much less porous external scale was formed, and a reduction in the kinetics of scale formation was observed. A number of authors'-7 have reported linear oxidation kinetics for the reaction of pure columbium at 1000°C in air or in oxygen of about 1 atm pressure. A thin and tightly adherent oxide layer is found at the metal/oxide interface beneath a porous external layer of scale. Although the suboxides CbO and CbO2 represent thermodynamically stable phases at 100O°C, generally only Cb2O5* is identified as a reaction product in quenched specimens. Studies at 1000°C at lower oxygen pressures8,10 (Po2 - 10-4 Torr) show that both CbO and CbO2 do form and that CbO2 is a protective oxide. The growth of CbO2 results in parabolic kinetics until Cb2O5 is nucleated and grows. Apparently because of the large volume change associated with its formation, Cb2O5 is porous and does not serve as a diffusion barrier; linear kinetics prevail after the surface is covered with Cb2o5. On the basis of these observations, several authors5,9,10 have suggested that the linear oxidation of pure columbium at 1000°C in air or oxygen of 1 atm is limited by a Loriers-type mechanism,11 whereby the total rate or reaction is controlled by ionic diffusion through a thin layer of CbO2 which is maintained at a constant thickness throughout the linear oxidation. However, the concept of a Loriers model for a three-phase CbOlCbO2 Cb2O5 scale, with the only oxygen activity gradient across the NbO2 phase, is not self-consistent. Further, the suboxides CbO and CbO2 were not observed in the high-temperature X-ray diffraction study of columbium oxidation by Goldschmidt.8 From investigations in which the large PO2, dependence of the linear scaling rate was demonstrated, the importance of an oxygen adsorption or dissolution step has been suggested.4,5,7,10,12 Thus the mechanism for the linear oxidation of pure columbium remains quite controversial. Since further insight into the oxidation mechanism of pure columbium is not provided by this investigation, the authors wish to emphasize at the outset that their experimental results are not interpreted in terms of a particular rate controlling step for the oxidation of pure columbium. Previous investigations13-18 of the oxidation of Cb-Zr solid-solution alloys in air or oxygen at 1000°C suggest a remarkable dependence upon zirconium content. For an alloy of bulk zirconium mole fraction, N2r(0) equal to 0.05 or 0.10, the oxygen uptake is reported to be as high as four times greater than that for pure columbium;13,14 for alloys with NZr(0) 0.05 or 0.10 the oxygen uptake is reported to decrease with increasing NZr(0); to a minimum uptake of about one quarter that for pure columbium at NZr(0): = 0.50.13-15Since zirconium forms a more stable oxide (ZrO2) than the lowest columbium oxide (CbO), and since columbium exhibits a high solubility19,20 and diffusivity21,23 for oxygen, the internal oxidation of the zirconium component to ZrO2 is expected at a reaction front ahead of the advancing metal/scale interface. The external scale is then formed at the metal/scale interface by the inward migration of oxygen through the scale, probably through a series combination of molecular and ionic diffusion. Internal oxidation in conjunction with external scale formation has been investigated by Maak24 for the oxidation of dilute Cu-Be alloys in pure oxygen at 850°C. For cu-Be and many other binary alloys,24-27 very small, essentially uniaxial internal oxide particles are formed in the most dilute compositions; for somewhat more concentrated alloys. the internal oxide particles precipitate as platelets or needles. The formation of austenite from ferrite, ferrite plus retastable carbide, spheroidite, and pearlite has been studied in a series of irons, Fe-C alloys, and plain-carbon steels using fast heating techniques. In the absence of carbide, austenite nucleates at ferrite/ferrite grain boundaries; nucleation is followed by the rapid growth characteristic of a massive transfornation. The trarnsformation occurs at 950°C at heating rates of 106º C per sec and cannot be suppressed. Metastable carbide dissolves before austenite forms and does not influence the transformation kinetics. For spheroidite structures, austenite nucleates preferentially at the jinction between carbides and ferrite grain boundaries. Growth from these centers proceeds until the carbide is completely enveloped; subsequent growth occurs by carbon diffusion through the austenite envelope. For pearlite structures, austenite nucleates preferentially at pearlite colony intersections. Carbide la)?zellae dissolve at the advancing austenite interface but complete solution of carbide does not occur; the residtial carbide is eventually dissolvled or spheroid-ized depending on the carbon cuntent. The magnitude and temperature dependence of the austenite growth rate into Fe-C pearlite when incomplete carbide dissolution is assumed are satisfactorily explained by an approximate colume diffusion model. The impurities present in plain-carbon steel reduce the growth rate of austenite in comparison to that jound in an Fe-C alloy. The formation of austenite has been studied in much less detail than the decomposition of austenite. This is primarily a result of the importance of harden-ability in determining the mechanical properties of steel. Recently, more interest in the kinetics of austenite formation has resulted from the discovery by Grange1 that rapid heating techniques strengthen steel by refining the austenite grain size. Although the strengthening effect is not large, it is accompanied by no loss in ductility. In addition, interest continues in rapid heat treatment of low-carbon steel sheet for tin plate applications.2,3 Among the few systematic studies of austenite formation are the early work of Roberts and Mehl4 on formation of austenite from pearlite and recent work of Molinder5 and of Judd and paxton6 on formation of austenite from spheroidite. Also, Boedtker and Duwez7 and Haworth and paar8 have recently studied the formation of austenite from ferrite in relatively pure iron, Kidin et al.9,10 have studied the formation of austenite in 8 pct Cr steels, and Paxton has recently discussed various aspects of austenite formation in steels." The present work was undertaken to determine the kinetics of austenite formation for a variety of starting structures including ferrite, ferrite plus metastable carbide, ferrite plus spheroidal cementite, and ferrite plus pearlitic cementite. Emphasis was placed on determining the active sites for austenite nucleation, determining the temperature and time range of austenite formation, and in the case of pearlite a careful study of the growth rate of austenite was made in the absence and presence of impurities. By using a variety of heating techniques including laser-pulse heating, it has been possible to study austenite formation in an isothermal fashion over a wide range of temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys studied in the present work are a zone-refined iron with 4 pprn C, an Fe-C alloy with 130 pprn C, 2 Fe-C alloys with 0.77 and 0.96 wt pct C, and a plain carbon steel with 0.96 wt pct C. The zone-refined iron and Fe-C alloys contained 60 pprn and 200 pprn total substitutional impurities, respectively. The plain carbon steel contained 2400 pprn Si, 2000 pprn Mn, and 900 pprn Cr. Various heat treatments were given to these alloys to produce different starting structures of equiaxed ferrite, ferrite plus metastable carbide, fine pearlite, and spheroidite. These heat treatments are given in Table I. A wide range of heating rates were employed in this work because many of the reactions occur so quickly at temperatures in the austenite range that they are completed during the initial heating cycle unless very fast heating rates are used. Essentially the same heating techniques employed by Speich et a1.12 and Speich and Fisher13 were used in this work. For time intervals of 2 sec to 20 hr, simple hand immersion of 0.010-in. thick specimens in a Pb-Bi bath was employed. These specimens were quenched in a 10 pct NaC1, 2 pct NaOH aqueous bath. For time intervals of 100 m-sec to 2 sec, an automatic dunking and quenching device was employed with 0.002-in. thick specimens. Again, liquid Pb-Bi baths were used for a heating medium but now helium gas quenching was employed. For time intervals of 2 to 100 m-sec a laser heating device was employed with 0.002-in. thick specimens; a helium plus fine water-droplet spray was now used for quenching. Additional information on heating times shorter than 2 m-sec was obtained by study of the zones around the centrally heated laser spot. Here diffusion of heat from the centrally heated zone raises the temperature of the specimen locally to all temperatures between ambient and the peak temperature, but for times of the order of microseconds. A study was made of the development of texture and the anisotropy in plastic flow of Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V alloy. Based on Pole figure determinations, the shifting of texture induced by rolling at approximately 400°C was found to be due primarily to slip rotation for the major Portion of the material. Grain boundary shear is believed to be an important factor. The anisotropy of the textured alloy was examined in terms of the variations of yield stress under tension and the ratio of bi -axial strain increments µp, in the temperature range 25" to 290°C. The results were related to Hill&apos;s theory on plastic anisotropy. The Schmid factors of (1100)[1120], (1101)[1120/, and (1101)[1120] slip systems were analyzed and found to be compatible with the observed anisotropy. Cross-slip between these planes was proposed as a possible deformation mode. In a number of published articles, considerable interest has been directed to the possible achievement of texture hardening in hcp metals. Following Backofen, Hosford, and Burke,&apos; this phenomenon was related to the yield criteria of the material and was expressed in terms of the biaxial strain ratio, r = d?w/d?l. The higher the value of r, the greater is the expected potential for texture hardening under certain loading conditions. For a given material, r varies with direction. Such variation can be traced to the anisotropy in plastic flow and can be explained within the framework of the various modes of deformation. Hatch2 found that a high r value coincides with a texture whereby the (0001) pole is closely aligned with the surface normal for sheet materials, Based on the analysis of the slip on the {1010}, {1011}, and (0001) planes, Lee and Backofen3 and Avery, Hosford, and Backofen4 concluded that the resistance to thinning is reduced by the operation of the (0001) <1120> slip system; with this reasoning they were able to explain the low r values (i.e., r « 1) observed in magnesium alloy sheets in the rolling direction and in commercially pure titanium in the transverse direction. The general equation, dealing with plastic flow in a polycrystalline aggregate has been used to correlate the plastic anisotropy and texture. In this expression, T and s are shear and normal stresses, and dri and d? are shear and normal strain increments, respectively. Assuming that five slip systems are operative within each grain and applying the principle of maximum work,5,6 one can determine the m value among the available systems. On this basis, Hosford7 and Chin, Nesbitt, and Williams&apos; were able to correlate m with yield stress under plane-strain compression, and Svensson9 was able to predict the variation of yield stress in textured aluminum. These workers made their analyses from materials in which slip operation is known to be associated with plastic flow. Questions remain regarding the derivation of Hill&apos;s theory on plastic anisotropy,10,11 since it was formulated on von Mises&apos; yield criterion.&apos;&apos; Its ability to deal with other forms of deformation has been in doubt.13 Others have discussed the validity of Hill&apos;s quadratic equation relating strain and yield stress.14&apos;15 For hcp titanium, deformation by various modes of slip and twinning operations has been reported.16-20 If all possible modes of deformation operate and contribute substantially to the plastic flow, it is difficult to imagine how the quadratic expression can suitably describe the anisotropic plastic flow of titanium alloys. Backofen and Hosford15 considered that Hill&apos;s is a macroscopic theory and implied that the major mode of deformation by slip mechanism will adequately describe anisotropy of the material. In the present investigation, slip operation will be shown to play the major role in the development of sheet texture induced by rolling of a commercial titanium alloy. Although twinning and other modes of deformation may also operate, their operation is believed to be secondary. The anisotropic properties of the sheet, which can be expressed in terms of directional variation of r, µp = -d?w/d?l and the yield stress will be shown to be governed primarily by slip operation. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The titanium alloy chosen for the present investigation had a nominal composition of 8 wt pct Al, 1 wt pct Mo, 1 wt pct V, and 0.1 wt pct interstitial impurities. Sheets varying between 0.1 and 0.15 in. thickness were used. The alloy was received in a condition which was prepared by rolling at 900°C and annealing at 700°C. Subsequently, the sheets were subjected to further reduction in thickness by rolling at 400°C. A total reduction in thickness of 65 to 70 pct was obtained by a series of quick passes in a rolling mill with intermediate reheating. Further reduction in thickness was not possible due to cracking developed at the edges of the sheets. X-ray measurements were conducted in a Siemens and a Norelco unit to determine the texture of the sheets. Reflection techniques were used exclusively with CuK, radiation and a nickel filter. The loss of X-ray intensity due to geometric defocusing was calibrated with a technique described previously." The (0001), (1010), and (1071) pole figures were plotted from 0 to 80 deg, and to present the texture elements quantitatively, inverse pole figures were constructed following the technique described by Jetter, McHargue, and Williams.22 Tensile experiments were carried out at 25", 175",

The model developed by Tuylor for the calculation of Polycrystalline yield strength has been applied to the case of an aggregate hawing a preferred orientation. In general this procedure requires the specification of texture by means of weighting factors applied to specific orientations. The problem to which the model has been applied is that of the yield-strength aniso-tropy of cold-rolled aluminum whose rolling texture was described as a combination of (110)[112] and (311) [112] In this case yield-strength anisotropy is defined by the rutio of yield strength measured at an angle 8 to the rolling direction to that measured along the rolling direction. The method of calculation of yield-strength ratio as a function of ? is described and the results show good agreement with experimental values. The orthotropic yield criterion suggested by Hill has been applied to the results and the strain ratio R also calculated as a function of ?. This has been compared with calculations using the method suggested by Elias, Heyer, and Smith which does not exhibit suck good agreement with observation. one deficietlcy of the method presented is that the strain ratios used by are those applying to iso-Irobic materials. The method should therefore be reg-clrded only as a first abbroximation to the prediction of anisotropy. THE problem of calculating the stress-strain characteristics of polycrystalline aggregates from the properties of single crystals has attracted attention for a number of years. The most important contributions to this study have been those due to: Sachs,&apos; Cox and sopwith,2 Taylor,3 Kochendorfer,4 Batdorf and Budiansky,5 Calnan and Clews,6 Bishop and Hill,7,8 Kocks,9 Budiansky, Hashin, and sanders, 10 Kroner,11 Cyzak, Bow, and payne, 12 Budiansky and Wu,13 and Lin.14 While the earlier work has been largely superseded, recent developments tend to support Taylor&apos;s solution" within the restriction imposed by his assumptions. The essential features of Taylor&apos;s approach were: 1) the material is rigid-plastic; 2) each grain experiences the same strain components as the aggregate as a whole (the problem was that of uniaxial deformation with principal strain components in the ratio 3) all regions of each grain deform uniformly; 4) work hardening occurs equally on all slip systems. While Bishop and Hill7 have generally validated this approach, there has been some criticism offered. Kocks? as pointed out that since multiple slip must occur the single-crystal data must be determined from orientations arranged such that polyslip takes place. Boas and Hargreaves,15 and others, have shown experimentally that the strain distribution within grains is not uniform, the strains in the vicinity of grain boundaries being less than those in the center of the grains. Both of these criticisms can be largely offset by the suitable choice of single-crystal critical shear stress. However, for the problem analyzed below, the critical shear stress is not directly used and, consequently, these criticisms lose their importance. The more recent contributions have attempted to obtain a more complete analysis by considering an elas-toplastic material and considering interactions between grains of differing orientations. Lin14 has considered the early stages of yielding for a polycrystalline aggregate having specific regions of defined slip plane orientations. On the other hand, Budiansky and Wu13 have allowed for these interactions for randomly disposed grain orientations and have calculated the polycrystalline stress-strain curves for crystals exhibiting either elastic-ideally plastic or kinematic hardening characteristics. This work has shown that yielding commences when the macroscopic stress is 2.2 times the critical shear stress for slip in a single crystal (7,). The yield stress-strain curve then rises becoming asymptotic to a value of 3.072 7,. This is close to the value obtained by Bishop and Hill (3.06) in their confirmation of Taylor&apos;s method. This, of course, is to be expected since, at large strain values, the elastic strains are negligible and the rigid-plastic model is satisfactory. The results of Budiansky and Wu indicate that the result obtained by Taylor is 7.7 pct high at a plastic strain which is two times the elastic strain at the initiation of yield. By defining the anisotropy in terms of relative values, the ratio of yield strength at orientation ?, to that measured in the rolling direction, the effect of the discrepancy in Taylor&apos;s solution is considered to be of lesser consequence. Therefore, it is anticipated that an analysis based on Taylor&apos;s solution, which can be quite straightforward, should provide a reasonable estimation of the anisotropy of materials having a preferred orientation texture. OUTLINE OF TAYLOR&apos;S METHOD In fee metals there are four possible slip planes (the octahedral planes) and in each there are three possible slip directions (the edges of the octahedron), that is a total of twelve possible slip systems. von Mises16 has shown that at least five independent slip systems must become operative in each grain of the polycrystalline aggregate in order to preserve continuity of strain. With this geometrical requirement as basis and the assumptions previously listed, Taylor determined the operative slip systems for a number of orientations of the tensile stress axis specified in the unit stereographic triangle. By crystallographic and X-ray methods, the existence and isonzorphism of Ti3Rh5 and Hf3Rhs were confirmed. Both phases are of the orthorhombic Ge3Rh5 type; lattice parameters and refined positional parameters are given. The structure is related both to the filled-up NiAs-B8 and Cu-AI types. An analogous phase with zirconium does not exist; the effect of ternary substitutions for titanium ad hafnium suggests a size factor limit to be active. A recent survey of phase diagrams of the T4 metals titanium, zirconium, and hafnium with the T, noble metals rhodium and iridium indicated the existence of the A3B5 phases Ti3Rhs, ZrsRhs, and HfsRhs. Ti3Rhs and Hf3Rh5 were found to be isostructural, based on the line-rich powder patterns which had not been analyzed. Zr3Rh5 was considered to have a substructure of the NbRu type (orthorhombically distorted B2-CsCl type).&apos; Because, in combinations with other transition metals, hafnium and zirconium are generally more likely to form isostructural phases than hafnium and titanium (with the significant exception of the Ti2Ni-"E93" type phases based on T4 metals2), the reversal of this relation for the A3B5 phases was of interest. As shown in the following, the nonexistence of Zr3Rhs has been established, the structures of Ti3Rh5 and Hf3Rh5 have been worked out, and crystal chemical relationships and stability criteria are reported. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS AND RESULTS Alloy Preparation and Phase Diagram Work. Alloys were prepared from high-purity (99.99+ pct) elements by arc-meltin3,4.Heat-treated alloys were annealed in a vacuum of 3 x X torr for 24 hr at 1300DC. Metal-lographic samples were etched electrolytically in concentrated HCl with 5 v ac for 5 min.3 X-ray diffraction powder patterns were taken on a GE XRD-5 dif-fractometer with Cum radiation at low scanning rates (0.2 deg per min for 28). It was confirmed that Ti3Rhs and Hf3Rh5 have similar diffraction patterns, and that an alloy with the composition Zr3Rhs has a different pattern. Six Zr-Fh alloys with 59 to 69 at. pct Rh were therefore prepared and investigated in the as-cast state by X-ray diffraction and metallography. Alloys at 59 and 61 at. pct Rh were found to be a single phase, with the distorted B2-CsC1 type structure typical for the off-stoichio- metric region of the phase (Zr,-,Rh,)Rh. This phase forms a eutectic with ZrRhs at about 66 at. pct Rh: accordingly, alloys between 61 and 69 pct at. pct Rh consisted of two phases. There is no evidence for the existence of Zr3Rh5. Based on the results in Rafs. 1 and 5, on the present work on Zr-Rh, and on several additional alloys investigated, the portions between the AB and AB3 stoi-chiometry for Ti-Rh, Zr-Rh, and Hf-Rh are as follows: Further, several ternary alloys near Ti3Rhs and Hf,Rhs were prepared in which it was attempted to replace titanium and hafnium partly by zirconium, niobium, tantalum, and germanium. The results will be discussed in a later section. Structure Determination of Ti3Rh5. Since Ti3Rh5 and Hf3Rh5 are isostructural, the following discussion will largely deal with the former. Although the powder pattern of TisRhs is complex, as found previously,1 it could be indexed by comparison with other structures of A3Bs stoichiometry. Ti3Rh5 was found to be isostructural with Ge3Rh5, whose orthorhombic structure had been elucidated by Geller.9 As both the sizes and atomic numbers of germanium and titanium are comparable, the unit cell volume and the peak intensities could be expected to be similar; however, significant differences exist in the atomic positions, as will be shown. All lines in the powder patterns of Ti3Rh5 and Hf3Rhj could be indexed with primitive orthorhombic unit cells with the lattice constants: The fractional errors are 10 The low-angle portion of the indexed powder pattern of Ti3Rh with sin2 8 < 0.30 is listed in Table I. The extinction laws Okl only with k = 2n and hOl only with h - 2n are compatible with the space group Pbo2 and the more symmetrical space group Phnm of Ge3Rh5. Finally, the positional parameters of Ti3Rh5 and HfsRhs were refined under the assumption that titanium and hafnium occupy the germanium positions in Ge3Rh5. Integrated intensities were obtained from the diffraction patterns by planimetry. Intensities of overlapping reflections were separated by an iteration process incorporated into the least-squares positional refinement program according to a method described previously. The intensities of Ge3Rh5 were used in the first separation cycle, while the atomic parameters of Ge3Rh5 were used as starting values in the first refinement cycle. Absorption due to specimen

The review by Professor J. C. Jaeger (Chapter 1) briefly summarizes and discusses a select group of papers by various workers dealing primarily with aspects of fracture in brittle rock materials. Professor Jaeger&apos;s treatment is primarily concerned with the correlation of phenomenological and theoretical failure criteria with empirical results from short duration tests at ambient temperatures and generally at low lithostatic and interstitial fluid pressures. As engineering rock mechanics becomes more concerned with new techniques of mineral exploration and production at increasingly greater depths in the crust, it is well to be aware of the effect of the environment -that of the superposed stress field upon the lithostatic and interstitial fluid pressure, the temperature and the duration of the loading upon the failure of rocks either by fracture or flow. All results to be discussed here are from laboratory tests on small homogeneous samples, thus caution should be used in the direct extrapolation of these results to large inhomogeneous rock masses having quite different boundary conditions in the earth. The purpose of this supplement is to briefly point out the major effects of these parameters as examined singly, with all others held constant, and to cite some recent results which apply to the main theme on the brittle failure of rocks. The total stress field imposed upon a small volume of porous and permeable rock in the earth&apos;s crust may be thought of as the sum of an applied differential stress, plus a lithostatic pressure, plus an interstitial fluid pressure. The differential stress portion may be completely specified by nine components, six shear and three normal. In 1926 one of the authors published researches on the determination and description of the iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum systems,&apos; including the equilibrium diagrams. In 1929, further work was carried on, including the examination by X-rays, which is recorded here. Meas-urements were made of changes in lattice parameters in the solid solutions. Precipitation from the solid solution and the accompanying changes in hardness were studied as well as the formation of the intermetallic com-pound phases upon sintering a mixture of metal powders. Materials All the specimens were prepared from the same quality of metals and by the same methods as were described in the determination of the constitutional diagrams. The metal powders as mixed and pressed were sintered or fused in a hydrogen atmosphere and subsequently treated as indicated in the titles of the figures. The formation of the iron-rich solutlon in the solid was accomplished by sintering in hydrogen for a period of 20 to 30 hr. at a temperature 25&apos; to 50&apos; C. below the melting point of the eutectic. The tungsten-rich and molybdenum-rich solid solutions of iron were prepared by adding the iron as a solution of iron ammonium oxalate to the oxide of tungsten or molybdenum, followed by a hydrogen reduction. This method results in a homogeneous alloy after sintering the pressed metal powder for 20 to 30 hr. at a temperature slightly below that of the peritectic reaction in the system involved. For X-ray examination the specimens were variously prepared, depending on the nature of the sample and what it was desired to show. For example, the iron containing tungsten or molybdenum in solid solution was cut with a file, the chips were put through bolting cloth, and this powder of filings formed the specimens for comparative study. MY remarks will be confined to the experience of our company in mining the No. 8 seam of coal in Ohio, although I believe that the relationship existing here between the method of mining and the method of cleaning will hold true in many of the coal seams throughout the country. The increasing demand for a cleaner and better graded product is being felt throughout the entire coal industry, and the methods of mining are playing an important part in the control of various sizes and quality of coal produced. We have found a definite relation between the mechanical loading of coal and its preparation for the market. In the No. 8 coal seam the location of the non-combustible material is regular. The&apos; marketable coal lies in three benches, separated by streaks or bands of impurities. These impurities must be removed from the coal to properly pre pare the product for the market. Where hand-loading methods are employed, the loader removes as much of this non-combustible material as possible at the working face. The impurities that are missed by the loaders are removed as the coal passes through the preparation plant, by means of picking tables. As this method of cleaning cannot improve the quality of the extremely fine sizes, a practice has been established in the company&apos;s hand-loading mines, of undercutting the coal about 2 in. above the bottom of the seam, thereby eliminating any possibility of impurities caused by the cutting machines cutting into the rock bottom below the coal seam.

A PROPER consideration of this subject is not confined to the technical channels of production and metallurgy. It concerns an industry, and should cover economic aspects which are of material importance in any program of development. The discussion may logically be treated under three subdivisions, as follows: (1) manufacture, (2) characteristics related to quality of material; (3) adaptability and exploitation of product. MANUFACTURE OF WROUGHT IRON The manufacture of wrought iron is the most ancient art of the ferrous metal industry. The eighty years or less of existence of processes identi-fied with our modern "Age of Steel" is a relatively brief interval com-pared with the several thousand years associated with the production of wrought iron by man. From the primitive early methods of production, manufacture for many centuries followed the line of direct reduction. There were developments as experience was gained through the years; but man&apos;s needs for a strong, ductile, forgeable product were met by reducing the ore to metallic iron in a single-stage operation. Following the development several centuries ago of what has become our modern blast-furnace operation, manufacture of wrought iron was gradually transformed into a two-stage method of first producing cast iron and then refining this to the desired degree of forgeability; the fore-runner in principle of today&apos;s scheme of manufacture of steel. The product retained the essential characteristics of highly refined base metal with iron-silicate slag incorporation, which were associated with the material resulting from direct reduction methods. Cort&apos;s invention of the puddling process in 1784 is a landmark in wrought-iron manufacture. The distribution of cobalt and vanadium over non-equivalent crystallographic sites in C14-type Zr(VCo), alloys has been investigated. An anomalous X-ray scattering technique developed by Skolnick, Kondo. and lavine7 by which the separation in the scattering factors of two similar atoms can be enhanced was employed. Six alloys spanning the pseudobinary section ZrV1.6Co0.4-ZrVO.6CO1.4 at 10pct steps showed a nonrandom compositionally dependent distribution. Specifically, at high vanadium content cobalt preferentially occupied sites of type (6h) and vanadium, sites of type (2a; at low vanadium content the reverse was observed. In addition to the distribution fraction the structural parameters x and z were obtained. There was no significant deviation of these parameters from those obtained in the ideal C14 structure. Certain suggestions are made to account for the observed nonrandomness in the distribution of atoms on the two types of sites. INTERMETALLIC compounds of formula AB2 iso-morphous with MgCu2, MgZn2, and MgNi2 are known as Laves phases. Because Laves phases exhibit high symmetry and coordination numbers, the highest possible for an AB2-type compound,1 they are among the most frequently observed compounds in nature. In recent years interest has centered about the purely transition metal Laves phases2-&apos; in efforts to understand the function of atomic size and electronic structure in the formation of these compounds. It has been observed that pseudobinary Laves phase systems often show a variation of structure across the phase diagram. Such a system is the ZrV2-ZrCo2 in which the structure varies from cubic MgCu2 to hexagonal MgZn2 to cubic MgCu2.4 Some understanding about the conditions under which the second modification is stable can perhaps be gained by studying the distribution of cobalt and vanadium atoms on lattice sites in the MgZn2 modification of the system ZrV2-ZrCo2. In both the MgZn2 and MgNi2-types there exist nonequivalent positions open to occupancy by the B element, whereas in the MgCu2 prototype all sites are equivalent. Skolnick, Kondo, and La-vine7 have developed an anomalous scattering technique suitable for this type of investigation. Whereas the influence of size on the formation of a Laves phase is well recognized, no substantial evidence has been put forth in support of the size ratio dependence of a particular prototype. Berry and Raynor8 suggested that RA /RB ratio does indeed affect the type of structure that is chosen, MgZn2 compounds tending to cluster about 1.225 while MgCu2 compounds were found at larger deviations from this ratio. Dwight,3 however, from a study of 164 Laves phases does not believe this generalization to be justified. Electronic effects are certain to play a part in the stability of Laves phases in general and in the choice of a structure type in particular. For example, size along would favor the formation of Laves compounds of Ti, Zr, Hf, Ta, or Nb as the A element with nickel or copper as the B element. The absence of such is attributed to an unfavorable electron : atom ratio by Elliott and rostoker.4 Early experiments of Laves and witte9 with pseudobinary and pseudoternary systems of the three prototypes established the dependence of crystal structure upon electron: atom ratios. They observed that the MgCu2 structure dissolved elements of higher valency until the electron: atom ratio of =1.8 was reached; the MgZn2 likewise dissolved elements of lower valency replacing zinc. witte,6 from calculations of the electron : atom volumes of Brillouin Zones, obtained limits of stability for the prototypes MgCu2 and MgZn2. Elliott and Rostoker4 used these limits with considerable success in the all-transition element Laves phases they investigated. According to witte,6 compounds between the electron :atom ratios of 1.80 and 2.32 were of the MgZn2 type; those above and below exhibited the MgCu2-type structure. On the basis of these limits and an assumed valency of zirconium based upon the near tetra-valence of titanium, Elliott and Rostoker obtained valencies for the first transition series elements. For the Laves phases with which this investigation is concerned, ZrV2 and ZrCo2, the authors calculated electron :atom ratios of 2.54 and 1.56, respectively. These ratios are for the MgCu2-type structure and straddle the stability band of the MgZn2 modification. One could, therefore, predict that a pseudobinary system ZrV2-ZrCo2 should pass through the MgZn2 modification in traversing the composition diagram from one end to the other. Implicit in this assumption is a smooth change of the electron: atom ratio from 2&apos;54 to 1.56. MOSS10 states that his finding the low temperature structure of ZrCr2 to be C15 instead of C14 alters greatly Elliott&apos;s valency of zirconium and hence the assumed valencies of the other metals. RECENT lead-smelting techniques have tended toward use of high-grade concentrates with minimum amounts of flu, accompanied by profitable employment of roast reaction.1-5 In order to better understand these smelting processes, thermodynamical calculations have been carried out on the Pb-S-0 system, and the results obtained have been presented in isothermal reaction diagrams in which log Ps, and logPo, were the axes. The diagram thus constructed seems to be more convenient to grasp the equilibrium aspect than those published hitherto.6-8

THE New Cornelia Copper Co. is mining and treating a &apos;monzonite " porphyry" copper deposit that is all hard rock. The oxidized surface shell, which constitutes the leachable part of the orebody, is measurably more resistent to crushing and comminution processes than is the underlying sulfide portion. The siliceous ribs running through the whole orebody are harder to crush than the main mass and there is no soft crumbly material to furnish the large volume of primary fines that features the crusher feeds of most other porphyry properties. New Cornelia ore reaches the primary crushers with a greater. proportion of large &apos;pieces. A hydrogen peroxide precipitate process has been adopted by Atlas Minerals for the recovery of uranium oxides from sodium chloride strip solutions. Adoption of the process was based on laboratory and plant tests comparing hydrogen peroxide with other precipitants. Plant operation has demonstrated that the hydrogen peroxide process consistently yields uranium concentrates of high purity and barrens of low uranium content. Increased U3O8 concentration in the product, reduced levels of impurities which incur penalties, and higher product density have produced economic advantages.

The sandstone referred to, the foreign quartz, was a very pure sandstone and bad hardly any impurities in it, and the brick made from that particular material, while apparently beautiful while coming out of the kiln, and true, immediately on heating in the furnace buffed up half an inch and were cracked open.

Two of the aluminum-alloy systems previously studied-the alumi-num-titanium and the aluminum-chromium-exhibit a peritectic reaction at the extreme aluminum end of the diagram. Preliminary work indi-cated that the aluminum-zirconium and certain other aluminum systems were similar in this respect. The present paper, the twentieth of a series from the Aluminum Research Laboratories, reports the results of a recent investigation of equilibrium relations in aluminum-zirconium alloys of high purity, which confirm the preliminary observations. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS There has been only one investigation of the aluminum end of the aluminum-zirconium system. Sykes1 prepared and studied alloys containing 0 to 70 per cent Zr. The lowering of the freezing point of aluminum by the addition of zirconium was found to be very little, if any (less than 2°C.). He placed the solid solubility of zirconium in aluminum at room temperature between 0.57 and 0.97 per cent. A few other investigators have attempted to determine the com-position of the intermetallic compounds occurring in this system. Hönigschmid2 obtained the compound ZrAl3 as a by-product during the preparation of ZrSi2. He made no attempt to prepare other aluminum-zir-conium compounds. Weiss and Newmann3 prepared an alloy by heating aluminum with a double fluoride of potassium and zirconium. When this alloy was treated consecutively with caustic soda and hydrochloric acid, there was a residue, which contained approximately 72 per cent Zr and 28 per cent Al (Zr3Al4). Marden and Rich4 prepared an alloy in the same way, treated it with caustic soda, and obtained a residue of silver-white crystals, which contained 70 per cent Zr and 30 per cent Al (Zr3Al4).
