USE of geophysical methods as an aid to prospecting for new oil pools and in the exploration of already discovered pools continued to increase and reached a new high during 1934. As in previous years, the scene of greatest activity was the Gulf coastal plain of Texas and Louisiana. Seismic crews working by the reflection method increased from some thirty crews at the first of the year to forty crews at the end. An increased demand for torsion balance work at the beginning of the year occurred and practically all available instruments were put into service. Some thirty crews with approximately eighty balances continued throughout the year. Both the pendulum and gravimeter methods of gravity surveys registered their initial successes and equipment was increased from five to seven pendulums and from one to three gravimeters during the year. Approximately five magnetometer parties continued to work throughout the year. No surface surveys by the electrical method are known to have been made. At the meeting of the Institute, held at Roanoke, Va., in June, 1883, I gave some facts in relation to charcoal pig iron of unusual strength, made from our carbonate ore taken from the mine at Amenia, N. Y. My object in again bringing the subject to the attention of the Institute, is to obtain, if possible, the solution of a prohlem in connection therewith. Our furnace is of the old type, stone stack 32 feet high by 9 feet 2 inches at top of bosh; bosh about 67O pitch; stone hearth; three tuyeres of 31/4-inch opening; fuel, a mixture of hard and soft coal; blast about & to # pound pressure, and heated to 400' to 600° Fahr. by iron pipe oven on top of stack. The analysis of the roasted carbonate ore, as before given to the Institute, is as follows:

Hofman and Demond, particularly as we observe from their experiments that these gentlemen recognize the usefulness of the Seger cones, and that this method of determining temperatures in the furnaces of the ceramic industry and in the tests of refractory clays is valued, not only in all parts of Germany, but also in other countries. Permit us to say, with reference to the crucibles employed in tests for refractoriness, that we have used of late, besides the magnesia crucibles, also those made of Zettlitz kaolin, with the addition of alumina, previously calcined, with regard to which we beg to refer to our article in the Thonindustrie-Zeitung of December 9, 1893.

This paper covers an investigation of the magnetic roasting characteristics of several iron ores when treated in the form of small pebbles (1/8" to 1/2" in size), and in the form of balled fines. The roasting treatment was carried out with apparatus capable of very close control of time, temperature, face velocity, and per cent combustible in the reaction gas. The effect of rapid initial heating was not studied although it is believed that this has a major effect on the results when processing solid pebbles. The test equipment is a fixed bed type, with such a wide range of gas velocities, temperature, combustible content and etc., that the results obtained can be made to approximate those from various commercial roasting processes. The data presented in this report covers reaction rates, effect of processing variables on silica in the concentrate, flow resistance of beds, and to a limited extent, the effect of particle size. The work is far from complete and raises many more problems than it gives answers for. We believe, however, that much of the information will be useful to those engaged in investigation of magnetic roasting processes. We measured the time required for various degrees of completion of the reaction of hematite to magnetite, for finely pound material in balled form and for carefully sized crushed ore. Measurements were made for a variety of Minnesota and Labrador ores. This report covers an ore requiring fine ginding (-325 M) for liberation (Lower Kevin) and an ore requiring coarser grinding (-100 M) for liberation (Upper Olson). These ores represent approximately the range of characteristics for a group in the west end of the Mesabi Range. Our data shows that the reaction rate is very fast for the finely ground material and that tests are readily reproducible. The reaction rate of the larger size material, in the range of 1/8" to 1/2", is much slower and the results more erratic. We found that for the ores tested, the percentage of silica in the Davis tube magnetic concentrate was a function of iron recovery. Normally the concentrate had a low and relatively uniform percentage of silica up to a critical value of recovery. Above this critical recovery value the percentage of silica increased very rapidly. For example, for one particular ore roasted in the form of 3/8" diameter balls made from -28 mesh fines, the silica remained at about 7% to 8% until the recovery exceeded about 93%. Increasing the recovery beyond 93% resulted in over 25% silica with the additional recovery. The degree of conversion of hematite to magnetite (% completion of roast) required to obtain 93% recovery for balled material, varied inversely with the gas flow rate. Percentage silica in the concentrate resulting from roasting 3/16" and 1/2" solid material was relatively erratic. However, for varying degrees of iron recovery the lowest silica percentages corresponded to those obtainable when roasting fines. It is thought the probable reason for the erratic values was the variation in shattering or cracking of the pebbles during initial heating and roasting. There is some indication that very fast initial heating will greatly increase the permeability of the individual particles of ore to gas flow so that the reaction rate for coarse sizes will approach that obtainable with balled fine material.

INTRODUCTION Massive hydraulic fractures have been used since 1949 in the petroleum industry to enhance production rates and increase recoverable reserves. Currently, a research program, the Multi-Well Experiment, is underway to develop the understanding and technology to a1 low economic production of the large gas reserves of the low permeability, lenticular sandstone formations in the western U.S. (Atkinson, et al, 1981; Northrop and Sattler, 1983). Use of state- of-the-art hydraulic fracturing techniques is a part of this investigation. As a portion of an extensive core program in support of this experiment (Sattler, 1983), fracture toughness has been determined for 56 sandstone, shale, mudstone, or siltstone horizons from three wells in the Piceance Basin. The role of fracture toughness in hydraulic fracturing is not well understood because other factors, such as in situ stress, dominate fracture geometry and containment. Rubin (1983) concluded from analysis of his laboratory hydrofracture experiments that fracture toughness should be included in design and numerical simulation of hydraulic fractures. However, van Eekelen (1982) contends that the stress intensity at the crack front should be so much greater than the fracture toughness of the rock that toughness can have no importance. Generally, fracture toughness and other material properties, such as elastic moduli and permeability, are thought to be of secondary importance in determining fracture geometry and containment. In spite of this, there is a need to acquire a more quantitative understanding of their importance for accurate design and simulation calculations. Drill pipe, and the connections used to join the pipe together, have had a long history of development and improvement. With the growing use of high tensile-strength pipe, the rotary shouldered connections used to join the lengths of drill pipe have become more critical. Fatigue-type failures of rotary-shouldered connections, or tool joints, have become a cause of much conern to operators and manufacturers. Most fatigue tests on tool joints have been made on the basis of bending moment applied vs number of cycles, rather than on the basis of stress vs cycles. A desire to learn more about the nature of stress in a tool joint due to bending caused a rather intensive experimental study to determine what actually happens to cause fatigue failure. It was known that a tool joint with insufficient make-up torque was subject to early fatigue failure. Therefore, the establishment of the relationship between make-up torque and allowable bending moment would enable a testing engineer to better correlate the results of various tests. The problem of calculating the stress in a tool joint due to an applied bending moment was complicated by: the effect of unknown stress concentrations; the applicability of the well known formula S = Mc/I; and the question of whether to use the combined cross section of the pin and box in calculating the moment of inertia I. TEST EQUIPMENT The test equipment consisted of the following. 1. A lathe modified to act as a fatigue machine for full-size tool joint or drill-collar specimens. 2. An adapter plate bolted to the headstock of the lathe and into which a short adapter was screwed. 3. Tool-joint pins on sections of drill collars bucked into the adapter. 4. A hydraulic load cylinder which rested on the bed of the lathe and applied bending moments to the joints. 5. Paper-backed strain gauges (FAP-12-12, 1/8-in. gauge length and A-5-1, 1/2-in. gauge length). 6. Eastman 910 contact cement for bonding gauges to joint and Epoxylite 222 waterproofing. 7. A 12-position switchbox, SR-4 bridge balancing unit connected to an SR-4 strain indicator to read the gauge output. 8. A four-channel Sanborn recorder, Model 150, was used as the readout instrument for part of the testing. The fatigue machine was well suited as a loading device. Because of the long lever arm available, the change of moment with distance was small; consequently, the vertical shear stress was small, less than 300 psi. Some difficulty was experienced with the hydraulic load cylinder at high bending moments due to leakage. The strain gauge equipment was simple and quite reliable. A 41/2-in. extra hole (E. H.) joint with "as machined" threads and shoulders and a 2 7/8-in. internal flush (I. F.) joint with copper-plated threads and shoulders were selected for testing because of their common usage in the field. In addition, the 4 1/2-in. E. H. was suitable because it had an inside diameter large enough to permit the insertion and accurate positioning of strain gauges without using special jigs, while the 2 7/8-in. I. F. joint required much lower bending loads to cause separation of the shoulders of the joint when made up to the recommended torque. COAL mining technique progressed slowly until the advent of mechanized mining. The cutting machine was a forward step, but had only a limited effect upon improving the percentage of coal recovery. Previously, the physical fitness of the loaders and the total output of the miners fixed mine production. The miner was an independent contractor and supervision over his working place was superficial. Rising costs and the inroads of substitute fuels demanded increased output per man to lower the unit production cost. Therefore, the amount of coal loaded mechanically in underground bituminous mines has risen from 0.3 per-cent in 1923 to 7.4 in 1929, to 20.2 in 1937, and to 48.9 percent in 1943. When loading devices were introduced it became necessary to adapt them to existing systems of mining, or to alter the mining system to fit the machine. An increased amount of supervision was required as output depended upon proper operation of the machine rather than on the physical fitness of the individual.

HERBERT HOOVER had to sit through an hour and a half of eulogy of himself at Carnegie Hall last night, said the Sun and New York Herald of Feb. 19. When his turn to answer came he remarked that, although one of the speakers had referred to him as a modest man, he would never, in view of this experience, be able to prove it. The occasion was the presentation by the Civic Forum to Mr. Hoover of its medal of honor for distinguished service, the only recipients in past years having been General Goethals, Thomas A. Edison, and Alexander Graham Bell. Only by distortion of intent could there be said to be anything political in the affair, which was carefully described by the chairman, Charles E. Hughes, as non-partisan. Nevertheless, the praise bestowed on the former Food Administrator by the former Republican candidate for President, proved specially interesting to a much applauding audience which filled the hall to the uppermost gallery. A piece of real news was supplied by Horace V. Winchell, whom Mr. Hoover succeeded on Tuesday as President of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. He said that Mr. Hoover, when in Europe after the . armistice, caused to be collected the literature of the war in all Europe.

An analysis of the powder patterns of the omega transition phase in three binary titanium alloys containing 8 pct Cr, 13 pet Mo, and 15 pet V, respectively, showed that all could be indexed on an orthorhombic unit cell. The unit-cell dimensions were all quite similar. There is evidence for the occurrence of more than one transition phase in Ti-Cr and Ti-V alloys. FOLLOWING the discovery of a new brittle phase in certain titanium-chromium alloys by Frost, Parris, Hirsch, Doig, and Schwartz,' named ? by these investigators, much interest has developed concerning the identification of alloy systems in which this phase exists, kinetics of the transformation in such systems, and the crystal structure of the ? phases appearing. Omega has been found in alloys of titanium-manganese, titanium-molybdenum, titanium-iron,' and titanium-vanadium.' In the present work, a study was made of the powder patterns of the ? phase occurring in alloys of Ti-8Cr, Ti-13Mo and Ti-15V in an effort to obtain a basis of comparison for ? phases appearing in these different alloys. Comparison of Alloys for ?-Phases Two hundred mesh powders of Ti-8Cr, Ti-13Mo and Ti-15V were prepared. A portion of powder sufficient for three x-ray powder specimens was placed in a Vycor tube, evacuated to less than 0.1 µ pressure, filled with argon, and sealed. The tubes were then heated to 900°C, held at this temperature for 30 min, and water-quenched. Following this transformation to the ß phase, the specimens were quenched in lead or solder pots, held at the desired temperature for varying lengths of time and water-quenched. The heat-treatments used and the phases identified are listed in Table I. The intermediate water quench was used in lieu of direct downquenching from 900°C to the bath temperature desired to circumvent the possibility of transformation of the powder specimen from ß to (ß + a) while it was being moved from the homog-enization furnace to the lead bath. To check the possibility that upquenching to the bath temperature might bring into play a different mechanism than downquenching to this temperature, resistivity measurements were compared on Ti-8Cr rod specimens which were transformed isothermally at 400°C by downquenching from the solution-treatment temperature and those which were transformed at 400" C by upquenching ß specimens from room temperature. The results are shown in Fig. 1. No difference in transformation mechanism was noted. It soon became apparent that sufficiently detailed Debye-Scherrer photograms of the ? phase in the alloys which were to be used could not be obtained by the use of copper radiation. Although satisfactory photograms of ß and ß + a phases were obtained with this radiation, the ? phase appeared to exhibit mild fluorescence, making interplanar spacing computation virtually impossible. Molybdenum radiation appeared to offer promise in cutting down this fluorescent effect, the mass absorption of titanium for molybdenum radiation being 23.7 in contrast to 204 for copper radiation. The reduction in the accuracy in determining the location of the photo-gram lines caused by the shorter wave length of molybdenum characteristic radiation did not appear to be a significant factor. Utilizing a camera of 57.3 mm radius, best results were obtained for exposure times ranging between 30 and 40 hr. Tube potential

THE heavy postwar demand for Portland Cement has created shortages that are gradually being overcome by increases in plant capacity. In the post-war period, the Lone Star Cement Corp. has expanded several of its existing 15 plants and has built 2 new plants, now in operation, with a third new plant under construction in Brazil, of design somewhat different from that of the two preceding ones. The new domestic plants are located at Lone Star, Va., near Roanoke, and at Maryneal, Tex., near Sweetwater, and went into operation during 1951. Each plant is equipped with two rotary kilns and has an initial capacity of 1,500,000 bbl per year, or 6,000,000 sacks. The total cost of each plant was about $10,500,000, and on this basis $7.00 in 1951 money are required per bbl of annual capacity; at 376 lb per bbl, this corresponds to $37.00 per ton of output. The investment corresponds to approximately $80,000 per hourly-wage earner employed. The purpose of this paper is to describe the most interesting design features of the two new and almost identical Lone Star plants. Why the Dry Process Was Chosen The two new domestic Lone Star mills employ the dry process because: 1-The raw materials at both properties are particularly suitable and can be dried very, readily. 2-The Maryneal, Tex., plant does not have water available for slurry. 3-Very substantial kiln fuel savings can be obtained. 4-Dry raw grinding reduces ball and liner wear and- general maintenance, without any sacrifice in power. Operating costs to date have more than justified the choice of the dry process for these two plants. Raw Materials The chemical composition of Portland Cement raw material after crushing, grinding, and mixing, but before burning, is about as follows: [ ] sometimes tailings from an iron ore concentrating plant. Certain objectionable materials occur in raw mix: magnesia, limited in cement to 5 pct, in excessive amounts; alkalies, as sodium and potassium; phosphorous; and sulphur, generally present in coal and oil. The Roanoke raw, materials are dense limestone and shale. The Maryneal materials are soft limestone and a hard brittle clay that can be handled much like shale. Sand and iron ore are required in small quantities. General Plant Layout and Construction The two plants are so similar that one joint description will cover both, with such exceptions as will be especially indicated. The crushing plant is located in the quarry, and raw material is conveyed by belt to the storage building, where all materials are stored and handled. Fig. 1 identifies the various structures of the Roanoke plant. The large storage building is used for the storing and handling of all materials, including limestone, shale, sand, iron ore, coal, clinker, and gypsum. Directly adjoining the storage building is a structure under a similar arched roof, containing the raw and clinker grinding departments and the electrical substation. The discharge ends of kilns and coolers, and coal or gas burning equipment are also placed at one end of the mill building. The 340ft long kilns extend away from the main buildings to form the long leg of an L, at the end of which is the feeding and kiln dust collecting equipment, and the raw blending silos are conveniently located adjacent to the feed end of the kilns. The machine shop, storeroom, electrical shop, foremen's office, service rooms, and meeting hall are combined in one structure in the center of the plant, and the office and laboratory are close by. The cement silos and packhouse do not have to be tied directly into the manufacturing process and are therefore located at a point convenient to the railroad tracks.

THIS is not simply the story of how a water filled shaft was developed into a million-ton- a-year producing mine in the space of four critical years, although it is reason enough for telling it, but it is also the saga of an engineering achievement in which knowledge nurtured by years of experience in coal and ore mines was blended together and the best from each type of mining selected. The entire system of mining was detailed on maps by the mining engineering department before the shaft was unwatered, and subsequent development followed these plans nearly to perfection. The selection of machinery was particularly critical as it was necessary to push production from only a few headings in the early stages of development and metal mine machinery was being used in a coal panel-system of mining. At the start of World War I1 the demand for iron ore to supply Woodward blast furnaces, and rapid exhaustion of the main source of Wood- ward ore, No. 3 Red Ore mine, necessitated speedy opening of the Pyne mine. The mine is three miles southwest of Bessemer and is responsible for 80 pct of Woodward ore, the rest coming from the Songo mine. The Woodward Iron Co. is one of the old producers of the Birmingham district. S. H. Woodward, an iron-master of Wheeling, overheard two Union soldiers conversing about ore and coal lands in Alabama, which lead to the acquisition of the first ore lands of the Woodward Co. in 1869. Development was not begun until after the death of S. H. Woodward; his two sons, W. H. Woodward and J. H. Woodward, formed the Woodward Iron Co. in 1881 and purchased a tract of land midway between the ore vein on the southeast and the coal field on the northeast about 12 miles southeast of Birmingham for the

STRETCHING from New York southwestwardly to Georgia is a great range of hills and mountains consisting of pre-Palaeozic schists, slates, and gneissic and granitoid rocks, known locally by many different names; in Pennsylvaniaa as the South mountains, the Berkshire or Durham and Reading hills, and in Virginia and farther south as the Blue ridge. To the northwest of this range lies the " Great Valley," underlain by Lower Silurian limestones, and known as the Lehigh valley, Cumberland valley, Shenandoah valley, valley of Eastern Tennessee and Georgia and by other local names, but all these are parts of one valley, geologically and geographically continuous from New Jersey to Georgia. Lying upon and along the northern flank of this range of mountains, and dipping northwestwardly under the limestone of the valley, is the Potsdam formation (Primal or No. 1 of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey), which consists of sandstone or conglomerate overlain by slates. The latter are sometimes arenaceous and occasionally are replaced in part by sandstone. This formation varies from a few feet to several hundred feet in thickness. At the outcrop the slates are completely decomposed, oxidized or disintegrated, forming a belt of clay several hundred feet wide occupying the interval between the outcroppings of the sandstone and limestone. This clay-belt includes a more or less continuous series of iron-ore (brown hematite) deposits, which have been, and still are, extensively worked. The belt is more or less continuously mineralized with iron throughout its length, and hundreds of large deposits of ore have been developed and worked, producing many millions of tons of ore.

The Crucible mine in Pennsylvania, operating on Pittsburgh seam coal, is rated at 5000 tpd. The washing plant, built in 1943, is rated at about 400 tph, using hydroseparator boxes to wash the coarse coal (4 x 5/16 in.) and hydrotator units for the fine coal (5/16 x 0). It is generally acknowledged that gravity concentration equipment cannot be used efficiently to bene-ficiate coal finer than about 65 mesh. Before the present flotation circuit was installed, Crucible recovered its fine coal slurry, predominantly —24 mesh material, by passing it through a battery of five 14-in. and one hundred and ten 3-in. Hey1 & Patterson cyclones in parallel with a 75-ft Dorr thickener. About two thirds went to the cyclones and one third to the thickener. Underflows from cyclones and thickener were filtered, respectively, in one 12-disk Eimco and two 4-disk Oliver filters fitted with stainless steel cloth. The resulting cakes were added to the coarse metallurgical coal. The filtrates, overflow from the 3-in. cyclones, and thickener overflow were recycled to the coarse coal plant. The three major problems encountered in this system became acute when the mine switched from track-mounted machinery to the more economical off-track equipment. The quality and uniformity of product declined, too much slime accumulated in the circuit, and waste pond disposal became highly impracticable. Lowering of Quality and Uniformity: Since the filter cake was not beneficiated in any way, addition of this material, which contained about 18 pct ash. would certainly lower the quality of metallurgical coal. Difficulties of handling the high-ash, high-moisture cake were compounded by the lack of adequate blending facilities at the mine, making it impossible to maintain uniform feed for the coke ovens. For a two-month test period, to verify the source of trouble, all filter cake was excluded from the metallurgical coal. The excluded filter cake was stocked in the yard. Slime Buildup: The moisture retained in the coarse coal products and the filter cake provided daily the only means of slime bleed from the circuit. As this bleed was not enough to offset the incoming fines in the raw coal feed, there was excessive buildup of slimes. To operate at all, it was necessary to purge the system each weekend by pumping all the solids from the thickener to a waste pond. The slimes built up during the week progressively increased the apparent viscosity and density of the circulating plant water, so that hydroseparators and hydrotator units had to be constantly adjusted. Uniformity, yield, and quality of the metallurgical coal suffered in consequence, and the filter cake ash and moisture contents increased from Monday to Friday. Limited Waste Disposal: Location of the plant does not permit unlimited waste pond area. Maintenance of a waste pond for the purpose of emptying the thickener during weekends became a costly burden that could not be tolerated. HOW THE PROBLEMS WERE SOLVED The flowsheet (Fig. 1) chosen to overcome these difficulties is considered the one most economical to install and operate. The symposium on production for the year 1942 contains no papers on the foreign situation except those on Argentina and Mexico. It has always been the policy of officers in charge of the symposium to refrain from publishing information that might possibly injure national or private interests. At the close of the war we hope again to publish full and accurate records of production abroad. Excerpts From Circular to Authors In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each space in Table I may represent one of four possibilities; either it is not applicable to the particular field, or the proper entry is not determinable, or the proper entry may be determinable but is not determinable from data available to the author, or the proper entry is determinable. When spaces are not applicable, leave blank; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable but not determinable from data available to the author, please insert y; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable by the author, make such entries. y implies a Rope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. The entry of a zero is a positive declaration, and it is an important declaration where it is in order. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. For many spaces the correct entries represent the opinion of the author (for example, "Area Proved") and in such cases the entry need not be hedged to such extent as when the quantities are definite yet can be ascertained only approximately by the author. In cases under definite headings but where figures are only approximate, the author may use x. It is thought that the nearest whole numbers are sufficiently accurate for our purposes except as to percentage of sulphur in oil. If an author desires to report any other figures to tenths, he may do so. The quantity of gas produced should include, where possible, gas sold or otherwise marketed, and gas blown into the air, burned as flares or otherwise wasted. Segregation of these figures would be interesting if the authors can make such segregation. In any event, the figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir. Under the columns on "Depth," the average depth to the top of the productive zones and to the bottom of the productive wells, when subtracted, should give the approximate thickness of the productive zone. For fields where this is not true because of unusually high dip or for some other reasons, it is suggested that the authors indicate in their text the approximate average thickness of the productive zone.

The unit-train for moving mineral raw materials is considered by many railroad men as the most significant contribution toward reducing rail freight costs since the introduction of the diesel locomotive. The idea, which involves assigning railroad equipment to only one haul and keeping the equipment rolling, results in the maximum utilization of equipment. For example, before the unit train was placed in service on coal hauled to one of Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Company's customers, about 900 cars and 9 locomotives were needed to move its coal requirements, compared with 250 cars and 6 locomotives currently used. If unit-train economics are to be achieved, coal companies cannot use railroad cars as small storage bins on wheels to accumulate their coal in train-load shipments, instead, these companies must build large bins which incorporate facilities for the rapid loading of railroad cars in a minimum length of time.

AMONG the European nations Germany is the center of interest economically as well as politically, and of prime importance for Europe as a whole is Germany's capacity to produce mineral products for armament and for export in exchange for the import of the essential supplies to maintain its industries. So far as minerals are concerned, Germany is worse off than any other great power except Italy, and deficiencies are being met by attempts to increase output from local deposits and by greater use of substitutes derived from domestic raw materials to replace imported metals, petroleum products, and other minerals.

The only way in which the difficult problems of classification of coal for the manufacture of by-product coke can be solved is to analyze them by the use of scientific data. It is very easy to adopt classifications for coal for the manufacture of by-product coke along certain lines; we can easily say that for a certain class of metallurgical operation coke made from bituminous coal must not contain more than so much sulfur or more than so much ash and should yield certain returns in the by-products, tar, ammonia, benzol, gas, etc. Those points we are fairly clear on and I think it is hardly worth while to discuss them because I presume that they are familiar to most of us who have any occasion either to make coke or to use it. But there is a field in the manufacture of coke which we know very little about. For example, we are operating a plant on a certain mixture of coal. Suddenly our blast-furnace man or the user of the coke tells us the coke is not as good as it was before. The coke is analyzed and the coal is analyzed. Everything seems to be about the same as it was— the ash is the same, there is no more sulfur, and so on—but the coke, for the use to which it is put, particularly in the blast furnace, is wrong. What happens? The management decide to try a slightly different coal mixture. They do not necessarily raise the total hydrocarbons, the volatile matter in the mixture, nor change the sulfur or the ash, but they do make a change which improves the value of the coke for metallurgical use. The reason for this difficulty, as I see it, is the " combustibility " of the coke—I hesitate to use the word, but it is the best one I have available.
