The peninsula of Florida is remarkable for the uniform character and simplicity of its geological structure. Major Henry Whiting, of the U. S. Army, was one of the first to give an account of the physical features and rocks of Florida, in an article published in 1839, in the American Journal of Science (vol. xxxv., p. 47). He says: " The rocks found in situ are all calcareous, though siliceous boulders are occasionally seen, and nodules of hornstone are here and there mingled with the limestone, which elicit sparks and are sometimes used by the Indians for flints."

IN the study of the structure or the properties of a series of alloys or nonmetallic compounds, it is often advantageous to express the com-position not as percentage by weight, according to which the material is always made up and analyzed, but as the atomic percentage of the two constituents. The conversion from the one to the other is repre-sented by the formulas: 100A 100x Y x 100 ? x/A A [1] A+ B x + A/B(100-x) X _ 100yA 100y [2] yA+(100-y)B or y+A(100-y) where x and y are the weight and atomic percentages respectively of the element of atomic weight A, and (100 - x) and (100 - y) are the per-centages by weight and by atoms respectively of the element of atomic weight B. While calculations according to these formulas are simple, they are' time consuming if several conversions have to be made. In 1931 Water-man' constructed a nomograph for performing the conversion, but this did not permit an accuracy greater than about 1 per cent to be obtained in the neighborhood of 50 per cent. Olander2 has proposed a graphic method simpler than Waterman's and one that gives a uniform precision throughout the entire scale. The possible accuracy is about 0.5 per cent of the whole, depending on the size and accuracy of the coordinate paper used. Recently, Hermann3 has described a slide rule for making the calculations. The Pacific rim countries, comprising more than half the globe, represent a complex mix of developed and developing nations. The area comprises a large segment of the industrialized world. Within its boundaries are also found many of the world's greatest mineral resources largely concentrated in the less developed countries. The conflicting objectives of these developed and developing nations are giving rise to changes in the traditional patterns of world resource development. Powerful political and socio-economic factors affecting the world today are having a great bearing on natural resource developments in the Pacific basin. New forms of partnerships have been emerging in developing nations which have had a great impact on the mining com- munity, lending institutions, as well as political relations. The United States and Japan have been substantially responsible in the past for the development of natural resources in this area of the world. Their role, however, is undergoing significant metamorphosis. The rapidly changing economic and social environment in the developing countries is producing new tensions which affect future collaboration between producers and users of natural resources. To understand current problems, I believe, it is worthwhile to examine historical trends in this area which may help defining alternatives facing us in the future. In modern times the United States was the first country in the Pacific basin to start development of resources on a massive scale. The term metamorphism as commonly used means any change in a rock in either form or composition, from whatever cause. By metasomatism, according to Lindgren, is meant a metamorphism that involves a change in the chemical composition of a rock by the addition or subtraction of substance. Certain types of metamorphism are due to the action of mineralizing solutions, and are closely connected with ore deposition; they form, therefore, valuable guides in the exploration for ore-deposits. Other types of metamorphism are due to regional processes, and are not connected with ore deposition. By dynamo-regional metamorphism is meant a primary alteration of rocks over large areas under conditions of pressure, flow- age, and heat. This process produces schists and gneisses from either sediments or igneous rocks. It is thought that there is little migration of minerals or of elements in dynamo-regional metamorphism, and that the changes are due chiefly to recrysallization and rearrangement of original minerals in bands with their major axes oriented normal to the direction of greatest pressure. Under these conditions limestones are commonly altered to marble, and sandstones to quartzite, basic igneous rocks to greenstone or serpentine, while rocks of normal or acid com- position commonly yield the usual types of schist or gneiss. Dynamo-regional metamorphism, extending over large areas, has no connection with mineralizing processes, and is, therefore, no guide to ore deposits; while this process has certain features, such as characteristic mineral associations, in common with contact metamorphism, the results of the two processes may usually be distinguished without difficulty.

CURRENTLY 12,892 students are enrolled in the mineral engineering schools of the United States and Canada, marking an all-time record high for these schools. It shows a remarkably rapid recovery from the effects of World War II. Enrollment in all the other engineering branches has also increased but not so rapidly as in the mineral engineering branch. Almost all the data in this report are from the eighth questionnaire study of the mineral engineering schools made, as formerly, under the auspices of the Mineral Industry Education Division of the AIME. Every school is represented in the data, for which the authors thank the deans and professors who supplied the information. For this reason, the data of all the studies are comparable, an achievement not always possible in endeavors of this kind. For comparison with the general engineering enrollment situation, data are included from the January 1947 issue of the Journal of Engineering Education.

Veins in the Pyramid district of northwestern Nevada occur along steep fractures in Oligocene and Miocene quartz latite tuffs. The vein mineralization is zoned from a central enargite-pyrite zone outward through a complex polymetallic pyrite-tetrahedrite-sphalerite-galena-chalcopyrite-bornite-chalcocite zone, and finally to an outer zone of pyrite and galena. Wall rock alteration includes advanced argillic and sericitic envelopes along veins superimposed on district-wide propylitization. The ore distribution and alteration patterns were probably produced by an increase in pH, a decrease in sulfur fugacity, along with cooling of the migrating hydrothermal fluid.

THE speed of drilling rock has become an impor-tant factor in mining operations, while the place-ment of holes, kind, and quantity of explosive used. are equally important. These are a function of the rock hardness and toughness. Both of these fac-tors must be considered in compiling a table that will enable a mine operator or engineer to estimate drilling speeds in a given rock, knowing its hardness, and from its toughness, the dynamite required. The hardness of a homogeneous rock may be defined as its resistance to a penetrating medium, such as a drill-steel bit, and toughness, its resistance to with-stand rupture by the tearing apart of its minerals or parts of the same mineral. Rock hardness, as it has here been defined, is a function of the hardness of the component grains composing it, as well as grain size, shape, arrangement, and binding minerals. Rock tough-ness depends on substantially the same factors, but is measured by a totally different method. The units in which rock hardness is usually ex-pressed are either relative values or alphabetical desig-nations which carry no definite quantitative meaning. R. M. Raymond has suggested the measurement of com-posite rock hardness, based on mineral hardness as ob-tained by the Moh scale. This is done by multiplying the percentage of each mineral in a rock by the Moh mineral hardness and dividing by 100. These values convey a clearer conception in the minds of men in-terested in rock work -and are the basis of the units used in Tables 1 and 2. The hardness of rocks as it has been variously de-fined may be determined by different methods. The first method is one in which the proportionate average of the hardness of minerals making up a rock is the basis for classification. The other factors of grain size, shape, arrangement, and binding power are not considered.

URANIUM plant operations of the Kerr-McGee Oil Industries at Shiprock, N. M., began in December 1954. As originally designed, the plant treated Plateau carnotite ores by the acid cure process, which dissolved both uranium and vanadium minerals. After 16 hr of acid curing, the ore was conveyed to an agitator and leached for 2 hr in acid liquor at a pH of 1.0. The leach pulp was then separated at 100 mesh in a classifier, the sands continuing through a washing classifier circuit and the slimes going to a countercurrent decantation system of four thickeners.

THE accompanying chart was devised to provide a rapid and simple method of correcting for temperature and compressibility (deviation from Boyle's law) of gas under relatively high pressures and temperatures, such as are encountered in many deep reservoirs. The chart was prepared by interpolating for the desired values in the experimental data of Burke and Keyes1 and Kvalnes and Gaddy2 on the compressibility of methane, after adjusting their results from 0°C. to 60°F. and combining the correction factors for compressibility and temperature into a single multiplier, which, applied to the product of pressure and reservoir volume, gives at once the volume at one atmosphere (14.7 lb. per sq. in. abs.) and 60°F. The relationship 0f this multiplier to the compressibility factor Z, as used in most discussions, is simply: [Multiplier = 460° + 60°ZT –] where Z is the compressibility factor and T the absolute temperature (Rankine). Fahrenheit temperatures are shown on the vertical axis and pressures in pounds per square inch absolute on the horizontal axis. Correction factors or multipliers at intervals of 0.05 from 0.55 to 1.40 have been plotted on the chart and are calculated t0 give volume of gas at one atmosphere pressure (14.7 lb.) and 60°F. The operation is as follows: The reservoir volume, times the number of atmospheres pressure, times the multiplier, gives the volume of gas measured at one atmosphere (14.7 lb. per sq. in.) and 60°F. For example, a reservoir is estimated to have a volume of 10,000,000 cu. ft., bottom-hole pressure is 2940 lb. per sq. in. and temperature is 184°F To make the correction for methane, follow the 184° line horizontally to the 2940-lb. pressure line. The intersection lies between the 0.85 and 0.90 correction lines, and by interpolation we may estimate the multiplier at 0.863. In this chapter there is a wide difference in the meaning of some words used for rock and mineral names as defined by scientists and tabulated in the "Glossary of Geology and Related Sciences," published in 1957 by the American Geological Institute, and the meaning as used by the commercial producers of feldspar. It is necessary, therefore, to define these terms giving both the "scientific" and the "practical" definitions. There is no ambiguity about the name feldspar itself. This is a general term for a group of related minerals which are silicates of aluminum, combined with sodium, potassium and calcium. The feldspars are the most abundant minerals of the igneous rocks, and since these rocks make up the largest proportion of the earth's crust by volume (although not of the actual surface area of the continental land masses) the feldspars are the most abundant minerals of all. The igneous rocks themselves are classified on the basis of the variety of the feldspar present. The potash feldspars, which are called orthoclase and microcline, are the dominant minerals of the granites and syenites, and of their fine grained equivalents, the rhyolites and trachites. The plagioclase feldspars form an isomorphic series, of which the sodic endmember is called albite, and the lime endmember, anorthite. The members near the sodic end, albite, oligoclase and andesine are the characteristic feldspars of the granodiorites and diorites, and of their fine grained equivalents, the dacites, and andesites. These feldspars-orthoclase, microcline, albite oligoclase and andesine-are the feldspars used commercially. Labradorite, a member of the plagioclase group, in which the lime exceeds the soda in the chemical composition, is the common feldspar of the gabbros, anorthosites, norites, basalts and other so-called "basic" rocks. Although some attempts have been made to use labradorite as a commercial feldspar, none is now used except as an ornamental stone. The mineral anorthite is very rare. Since the feldspar in most of the common igneous rocks is relatively fine grained, and mixed intimately with other minerals, from which it can be separated cleanly only with difficulty, most masses of the common rocks cannot be used as sources for the feldspar contained in them. It is only the rarer types of rocks in which the feldspar is very coarse-grained, or ones containing very little of the iron-bearing minerals which are objectionable impurities in commercial feldspar, that are quarried to yield an acceptable product. The most widespread type of such a rock from which commercial feldspar can be produced, is that called "pegmatite." These rocks are dikes and bodies of irregular shape and of a size measured in feet or yards in most cases, rather than in miles. They are more commonly associated with granites, rather than with other coarse-grained igneous rocks. Many of them contain crystals of various minerals, including the feldspars, that are much larger than are found in the host rock, the granite, and in many there are large masses of feldspar that are sufficiently free from iron-bearing silicates so that products acceptable to the ceramic industry can be produced, in some cases simply by hand sorting. Most of this feldspar in pegmatites, however, does contain intergrown quartz up to 25 pct. Betterton, Jr. (Union Carbide & Carbon Corp., Oak Ridge, Tenn.)—The authors have contributed to the theory of zone melting by considering the effects of the solidification of the final zone on the distribution curves for the finite length bar. However, they do not consider in sufficient detail the restrictions imposed by the particular metals involved. Eq. 4 has the analytical solution which is equivalent to Pfann's' equation for normal solidification of the final zone. For distribution coefficients less than one, it is apparent from this form of the equation that, as the solidification approaches completion, the concentration attains extremely large values which are inconsistent with the density of physical materials. The necessary restrictions then are that the solute concentration cannot exceed the density of the alloy, or more frequently, the solubility limit in the solid phase. Secondly, the distribution coefficient cannot be constant from 0 to 100 pet solute unless the liquidus and solidus coincide over this whole region. It would thus be more correct to impose limits on the solubility such as would be indicated by a typical eutectic diagram. Furthermore, in this case the assumption that the distribution coefficient remains constant is more likely to be realized. The solidification proceeds according to Pfann's' expression until the concentration reaches the maximum solubility in the solid phasc. At this point, the concentration changes abruptly to the eutectic composition and remains at this value for the duration of the solidification. The width of the flat region, and the back reflection of this effect into the concentration curve on subsequent passes, depends upon the ratio of the eutectic concentration to the original concentration, upon the distribution coefficient, and upon the number of passes. Similar effects on the concentration curves in the first zone length would be expected in many systems for which the distribution coefficient is greater than one, and where the maximum solubility is not too much larger than the original concentration. The discussers agree with the authors that the assumption that the liquid is uniform in concentration should be considered with caution. Kneip and Better-ton' have shown, however, that in floating zone refining of zirconium, using induction heating, the distribution of iron agrees with theory which assumes a uniform liquid composition. Hence, in this case, the experimentally realized distribution coefficient agrees with the present phase diagram within the experimental uncertainty. L. Burris, Jr., C. H. Stockman, and I. G. Equations for the heat effects of additions of mixtures of multicomponent phases to a solution have been derived in terms of the enthalpy interaction coefficients. By these equations and the measured composition dependence of the heat effects on addition of mixtures of Ag-Cd solid solutions and elemental gold to liquid tin-rich solutions, values of the enthalpy in-teraction coefficients in tin-rich solutions at 541°K have been obtained. Analysis of these results in terms of the regular solution theory and the quasichemical theory suggests that near the melting point of the solvent association in the solution becomes important. SEVERAL recent papers have discussed the nature of dilute solutions on the basis of measured enthalpy interaction coefficients. l-3 These coefficients contribute to the understanding of the constitution of solutions and can be used for the evaluation of thermo-dynamic data of multicomponent systems. Their experimental determination, however, is laborious. This communication reports values of the enthalpy interaction coefficients of silver, cadmium, and gold in liquid tin-rich solutions obtained from the measured heat effects of additions of mixtures of Ag-Cd solid solutions and elemental gold to liquid tin-rich solutions. Williams numbers his acquaintances in the mineral industries by the thousands and h because his principal hobby is liking human beings, most of his acquaintancs are also his friends. Clyde is one of the many outstanding metallurgist, in the United States who started as a chemist. After graduating from the University of Utah in 1915 he was successively chemist for U.S. Smelting Refining and Mining Co., and at the Bureau of Mines station at Ithaca, N.Y. HIGH compression ratios, resulting from high injection pressures and relatively low recovery process pressures, constitute a major problem, which has confronted those engaged in gas recycling for condensate production since the beginning of that practice. Despite the numerous process developments and improvements, no entirely satisfactory solution for this prob-lem has been presented to date. Often, where the residue gas from the recovery process must be recompressed for subsurface injection, there is a substantial difference between the required injection pressure and the plant-operating pressure required to produce maximum recovery of condensate. These limitations result in high compression ratios, which, in turn, neces-sitate excessive compressor investment and operating cost. As an alternative, the operating pressure may be increased in order to lessen the compressor requirements but such a saving often is purchased at the expense of decreased condensate recovery, caused by operation at the higher pressure. Regardless of the choice, the net result is a diminished return on the capital invested in the project. The goal of future development in this field must be the complete recovery of all valuable hydrocarbon components in the reservoir fluid at pressures that, regarded as compressor suction pressure, will require minimum compressor horsepower to inject the residue gas into the formation. A com-pression ratio of 1.5 has been established as an optimum for modern compressor equipment." Therefore, in order to con-form to this optimum condition, a 3000-lb. injection pressure would require that the condensate recovery process be operated at 2000 lb. per sq. inch.

The evaluation of in-situ rock stresses from measurements of the change in diameter of a borehole that is stress-relieved by overcoring has become a common practice. Generally the stress evaluation has been based on isotropic relations whereas rock in varying degrees is aniso tropic. A plane elasticity solution fora circular hole along one axis of an orthotropic medium has been adapted to evaluation of in situ stress. The necessary elastic parameters for this evaluation may conveniently be obtained from static tests on the overcore in conjunction with a consistent orthotropic thick-wall cylinder solution. The method and equations for the laboratory and field evaluations are summarized and illustrated. The determination of in-situ rock stresses from boreholc deformation measurements has gained widespread acceptance. Hastl measured the change in diameter of a borehole that was stress-relieved by drilling a larger concentric core; this overcoring method has produced a major portion of the field data for recent stress evaluations in rock. These evaluations are based on the elastic properties of the rock, which are conveniently determined by testing the overcore.6-8 The stress evaluation and the overcore testing procedures generally assume isotropic relations whereas rock is anisotropic in varying degrees. Recently, an anisotropic plane stress solution was adapted for evaluation of in-situ stress9 and a related plane strain solution was developed for the testing of stress-relief core. 10 The present paper unifies the stress evaluation and overcore testing procedures for a general class of anisotropic rock. Equations are presented for calculating the state of stress in a plane normal to the borehole, and a consistent thick-wall cylinder solution is given for determining the necessary elastic properties. In addition, a complete example of stress evaluation from laboratory and field data is presented, and the order of error in computing the state of stress from isotropic relations is illustrated. Several limitations of the results should be emphasized. All results assume small linearly elastic deformations of a homogeneous medium. Rock characterized by orthotropic, transversely isotropic, and isotropic elasticity is considered; however, the anisotropic results assume a special relation among certain elastic constants in addition to geometric orientation with respect to a plane of elastic symmetry. For some stress determinations in rock, these may be severe limitations. On the other hand, the anisotropic evaluation procedure involves little additional effort and is much more flexible than the corresponding isotropic evaluation procedure. The collection of field data is identical. The laboratory determination of elastic parameters is no more difficult and time-consuming for the anisotropic than for the isotropic model. Only the calculations require some additional effort for the anisotropic evaluation, and this additional effort is eliminated by use of a small computer. The flexibility of the anisotropic procedure is greater because more than two independent elastic constants are available in fitting rock data. For the special relationship assumed among orthotropic constants, five independent elastic constants are available for the determination of in-situ secondary principal stresses as compared with two independent elastic constants for the isotropic model. Much of the material presented is either directly from the literature or adapted from the literature through superposition or the usual transformations. Consequently, only enough detail for clarity of presentation is included. This investigation attempts to describe and simulate the alcohol displacement process by means of a cell model, as employed in chemical engineering practice. The proposed model is more simple than previously proposed models. and utilizes parameters chosen on a theoretical basis. The model successfully reproduced the formation of the stabilized bank and the breakthrough of alcohol, the latter depending on one of the model parameters, which may be correlated with the length of the porous medium. Moreover, the effects of the phase behavior of the liquid system involved, as observed in experimental studies, were reproduced. Several variations of the basic model were devised and tested on a digital computer. These included the cases in which: (1) the actual value of fractional flow was used in cell-to-cell computations; (2) the number of cells was varied within the same run; and (3) incomplete rather than complete phase equilibrium was assumed within each cell. The proposed cell model clarifies the basic mechanism of the process. Detailed concentration profiles obtained for each cell, for instance, showed the mechanism of bank formation in relation to the phase behavior characteristics. The results obtained indicated a varying degree of phase equilibrium concommitant with changes in the velocities of the phases in an actual alcohol displacement. This condition was approximated by changing the number of cells during the simulation. Interesting information was obtained on the influence of path length on the efficiency of alcohol displacement, which has been the subject of some controversy. Certain limitations preclude the use of the proposed model as a substitute for experimental studies. The results obtained were, nevertheless, of value in interpreting the experimental results. INTRODUCTION During recent years considerable effort has been directed toward an understanding of alcohol displacement, the process whereby oil and water are recovered from a porous medium by the continuous injection of a solvent. The complex nature of the physical process involved has so far defied a complete mathematical treatment. Other methods of approach, amounting to an overall material balance, have been proposed, yielding useful information on certain aspects of the process.1-3 Taber et al, in particular, defined the displacement mechanism in terms of the phase behavior of the alcohol-oil-brine system invoIved.2 Wachmann reported a mathematical treatment of alcohol displacement subject to certain simplifying assumptions? Donohue proposed the use of a "cell model" for simulating alcohol disPlacement.5 The nature of the assumptions involved limited the utility of the model. The present work attempts to examine the variables involved in the simulation of alcohol displacement and discusses several possible versions of the basic cell model. Under certain conditions the model results are similar to the experimental results. In particular, the spontaneous formation of of the stabilized bank and the effects of the system phase behavior were successfully reproduced. PREVIOUS WORK ON CELL MODELS Cell models and the theoretical plate concept are often used in solving chemical engineering problems in which an explicit mathematical solution may be difficult or impossible to obtain. Examples of such applications occur in distillation, gas-liquid chroma tography,6 reactor technology, absorption, etc. In petroleum engineering, such a model was used by Attra7 to describe non-equilibrium gas drive, and by Higgins and Leigh ton8 to calculate sweep efficiency in water flooding. Aris and Amundsen pointed out the equivalence between the diffusion model and perfectly mixed cells connected in series.9 Deans proposed a three-parameter cell model to simulate two-component

Internal-friction measurements were made during isothermal aging treatments of 18 pct Ni maraging-steel wires between 420° and 612°C. A sharp initial drop in the internal-friction level was interpreted in terms of a rapid dislocation recovery reaction. The rate of the recovery was found to be independent of temperature. Truncation of the recovery reaction was apparent in those systems that exhibited the rapid age-hardening characteristics of the maraging steels. It is proposed that this initial hardening response is the result of a low activation energy preprecipitation reaction involving molybdenum. A gradual rise in the internal-friction level at longer aging times was associated with the precipitation of a molybdenum-containing precipitate. CONSIDERABLE research effort has recently been devoted to the mechanisms responsible for the high strength and toughness of 18 pct Ni maraging steels. These bcc martensitic alloys are found to harden during aging at temperatures between 400° and 600°C. The aging response is very rapid with more than half the total hardness increase occurring within the first few minutes of aging, Fig. 1. Precipitate particles have been observed in the later stages of aging by a number of investigators.&apos;-&apos; While the identity of the precipitates remains the subject of some controversy, one or more of the intermetallic compounds, Ni3Mo, Ni3Ti, and Fe2Mo, are almost certainly involved. Heterogeneous nucleation of precipitates at dislocations has been noted8 and cobalt is believed to enhance the formation of fine, homogeneously distributed particles by lowering the solubility of the alloying elements in the martensitic matrix.3,7 Transmission electron microscopy studies of the initial hardening behavior have not been fruitful. Strengthening mechanisms based on atomic ordering have not been generally supported by X-ray and neutron-diffraction experiments.9 In the present investigation, the aging reaction was studied using isothermal-aging internal-friction measurements. The marked sensitivity of internal friction to short-range diffusion and precipitation processes has provided a convenient tool for the elucidation of the strengthening mechanisms operative in the maraging steels. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE An upright torsion pendulum was used to measure the internal friction of several maraging steels during isothermal aging. The pendulum was placed in an atmosphere of helium at a pressure slightly less than atmospheric. To permit measurement of internal friction during the first minutes of aging, the specimens were rapidly heated by passing a current through them in a manner similar to that described by Ang and Wert.10 Thermal gradients in the specimen were largely eliminated by using specially designed specimen grips11 which produced temperature variations of less than 1 pct over 90 pct of the specimen length and less than 3 pct over the entire length at aging temperatures up to 620°C. A proportioning strip-chart program controller was employed to maintain constant specimen temperature during treatments of up to 36 hr duration. A number of vacuum-melted laboratory heats having compositions near that of a typical commercial 18Ni-7Co-5Mo-0.4Ti alloy were investigated. Magnesium, the eighth most abundant element in the earth&apos;s crust, is found widely distributed in a variety of minerals. Among the more commercially important ones are magnesite (MgCO3), brucite (Mg[OH]2), dolomite (CaMg[C03]2), and the salts magnesium sulfate and chloride often found in natural brines. Among other commercially important magnesium-containing minerals are olivine ([MgFe]2Si04), talc (H2Mg3[Si03]4), and serpentine (H4Mg3Si2O9). These are valuable because of desirable characteristics given them by the magnesium content and its placement in the particular crystal structure. These minerals are the raw materials for a host of products including magnesium metal and several grades of magnesia or magnesia-containing materials for refractories, fluxes, fillers, insulation, cements, decolorants, fertilizers, and chemicals. Considering only those minerals valued for their magnesia or magnesium content, over 85% of the material tonnages are processed to be used as refractories. Dolomite, which is used in enormous tonnages for its physical properties in construction, has an important use as a refractory raw material in its own right and, after calcination, as a precipitant for magnesium hydroxide, which is an intermediate for the production of magnesia or magnesium metal. Magnesia from the reaction of calcined dolomite (or limestone) with seawater or magnesium-containing brines has supplanted much of the production of magnesia from mined magnesite, particularly in the United States. The best known of the minerals directly and widely exploited for magnesia content is magnesite, one of the calcite group of rhombohedral carbonates which includes calcite (CaC03), siderite (FeCO3), and rhodochrosite (MnCO3) among others. The members of this group enter into a wide range of substitutional solid solutions when the positive ions have similar radii. The radii of magnesium and iron ions are within 6% of each other; hence, magnesite and siderite form a complete series of which breunnerite (ferroan magnesite) is a well-known end member. However, the radius of calcium ion is 36% larger than that of magnesium ion, and only limited substitution exists at each end of the MgCO3-CaCO3 series. Dolomite is not a member of the calcite group, but results when calcium and magnesium ions alternate in equal number in an ordered structure among carbonate ions. The result of these relationships is that calcite and dolomite, often found intermixed with magnesite, occur commonly as identifiable crystal entities which can often be separated to a varying degree from the magnesite by various beneficiation techniques. Magnesite, when pure, contains 47.8% MgO and 52.2% CO.. The pure mineral is sometimes, but rarely, found as transparent crystals resembling calcite, but, preponderantly, magnesite contains variable amounts of the carbonates, oxides, and silicates of iron, calcium, manganese, and aluminum. Magnesite may be either crystalline or amorphous (cryptocrystalline). The crystalline form has a hardness of 3.5 to 4.0. The color may range from white to black with shades of yellow, blue, red, or gray. The color is not a fundamentally significant indicator of purity, but in a given deposit, an experienced person can often roughly grade magnesite by assessing color and crystallinity.
