Briquets consisting of pure artificial magnetite, pure artificial hematite, and mixtures of the two were reduced by hydrogen in a loss-in-weight furnace at temperatures in the range 500° to 1000° . The rate of reduction of the pure hematite briquets increased continuously with increased temperature. In contrast, the pure nmgnetite briquets exhibited a pronounced rate ninimutn at about 700°C. Metallographic studies of partially reduced briquets rerlealed that, at this temperature, the he.matite samples reduced in a topo-chemical manner while the magnetite ones reduced uniformly throughout, and after partial reduction their cross sections contained a mixture of iron and unreacted wustite grains. No iron shells could be detected on the surfices of any of these uwstite grains. X-ray diffraction investigations indicated that these grains had a rzinimum lattice parameter when they had been formed at the rate rninimum temperature. Also, it was found that an activation energy of 41,000 cal per mole zoas required for reduction when only these wustite grains were present. Thus, it is suggested that the overall reduction rate of the rnagnetile su?nples at temperatures in the range influenced by the rate nzinirnum phenomenon was limited by the rate qf iron ion diffusion in the unreacted wustite grains. THE rate minimum phenomenon, which has often been observed when reducing iron oxides at a temperature of about 700°C, is one of the most interesting, yet unresolved, problems in the field of reduction kinetics. However, with certain ores, it has been found that their reduction rate actually decreases with an increase in temperature up to some value X where a minimum reduction rate is reached. With further temperature increases beyond X the rate becomes more rapid again. Temperature X is usually referred to as the "rate minimum temperature", while the overall type of behavior constitutes the "rate minimum phenomenon". This phenomenon has been reported by numerous investigators. They have found rate minima during the reduction of both artifiial' and natural374 magnetites and artificia15j6 and natural5" hematites. Rate minima have been observed when reducing high-purity material2 or low-grade ores,3'4 when studying particles in the micronsize range5 or relatively large agglomerates,g10 and during reduction with either hydrogen7 or carbon monoxide.11"2 Previously, this phenomenon has been attributed to many factors; these include sintering and recrystallization of the iron formed during reduction374 changes in microporosity of the ore upon redction,"" formation of dense iron shells around retained wustite grains,11716 and chem-isorption,17 to name only a few. However, most investigators who have reported a rate minimum merely speculated as to what seemed to influence it and they did not examine the fundamental causes. Consequently, the present experimental study was initiated in order to evaluate the basic factors which could be associated with this phenomenon. MATERIALS AND METHODS The experimental techniques, followed during this investigation, are similar to those which have been described previously.18 The chemically pure magnetic powder was prepared by partially reducing Fisher reagent-grade hematite with a gaseous mixture of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in a rotating-drum furnace. Three-quarter-inch diam cylindrical briquets which weighed about 12 g were formed from this magnetite powder and pure hematite powder. All of the briquets were sintered while they were slowly raised through the 1200°C hot zone of a vertical tube furnace. An argon stream was continually flushed through this furnace in order to prevent oxidation of the magnetite briquets, while in the case of the pure hematite briquets sintering was carried out in air. The sintered hematite briquets had a density of 5.06 g per cu cm while the density of the sintered magnetite briquets was 4.27 g per cu cm. The sintered briquets were reduced by purified hydrogen in a loss-in-weight furnace at temperatures in the range 500" to 1000°C. In all instances, the critical reducing gas velocity was exceeded and, in order to ensure that the results were reproducible, duplicate briquets of each type were reduced under each set of experimental conditions. A continuous record of the weight loss during reduction was obtained with the aid of a Statham transducer. The present experimental setup was capable of detecting a change in weight as small as 10 mg. Since a weight loss of over 2 g usually occurred during each reduction test, an accuracy of better than 0.5 pct of the total weight loss could be achieved. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Reducibility Tests. In the first set of experiments, pure hematite and pure magnetite briquets were used.

KNAPP, Ardmore, Pa.-Some years ago I made a swinging spider to carry a string of casing in a way somewhat similar to that described in this paper. The ground I tried it in was too soft for its successful operation. The spider had a central one-flange bushing to carry the slips. Under this flange and on top of the spider was a properly protected ball runway, or ball bearing, which permitted rotating the casing when it was in place and supported by the slips.

CHARLES E. WILSON'S second quarterly report "Meeting Defense Goals" was encouraging on the outlook for the mining industry, as prolonged demand for minerals seems assured; but for the individual engineer things are not so rosy. Ten percent of the gross national product is going for defense but the gross national product has been increased by 9 pct since the national emergency was declared apparently a commendable rate of progress. The increased production does not seem to have had the stabilizing effect on prices it should and housewives have been revising domestic budgets upward on a quarterly basis. Government economists have reached the conclusion that more taxes and wage and salary freezing are necessary to counteract inflation.

When manganese ores are leached with sulphur dioxide, a large part of any zinc in the ore usually is extracted with the manganese.1 In the dithionate process,2,3 in which the manganese ore is leached with dilute sulphur dioxide gas and the manganese is subsequently precipitated by adding lime to the pregnant solution, the zinc is precipitated with the manganese. These facts suggested the possibility of applying the dithionate process to the recovery of zinc from oxidized ores or calcined sulphide concentrates. Accordingly, an investigation was begun, and preliminary tests were made on several ores and concentrates. The results were encouraging, but the need to devote available funds and personnel to other projects made it necessary to drop the work before the various factors involved in the process could be studied in detail. A brief mention of the process,4 however, elicited a number of inquiries, so that it appeared desirable to report the results of the preliminary work. The dithionate process as applied to zinc may be summarized briefly as follows: The ore or calcined concentrate is leached with dilute SO2 gas to dissolve the zinc, largely as zinc sulphate, in accordance with the following equation in which [ZnO] represents the "oxide zinc" in the ore or calcine: [ZnO] + SO2(g) + 1/2 O2 = Zn++SO4— [1] If, in the leaching step, the ore or calcine is suspended in calcium dithionate solution, the sulphate ion, as it is formed, is precipitated immediately as calcium sulphate, which is subsequently filtered off with the insoluble ore residue: Zn++SO4— + Ca++S2O6— = CaSO4(s) + Zn++S2O6- [2] An alternative procedure is to suspend the ore in water, filter off the insoluble ore residue after leaching, add calcium dithionate to the resulting zinc sulphate solution, and then filter off the calcium sulphate precipitate. In either event the zinc is obtained in the form of a pregnant solution of zinc dithionate, from which it can be precipitated as relatively pure zinc hydroxide by adding milk of lime: Zn++S2O6— + Ca(OH), = Zn(OH)2(s) + Ca++S2O6- [3] The zinc hydroxide precipitate is calcined to form the final zinc oxide product: Zn(OH)2 = ZnO(s) + H2O(g) [4] Theoretically the process is completely cyclic with respect to dithionate ion, the calcium dithionate required for reaction 2 being replaced by that formed in reaction 3. In practice, of course, small amounts of dithionate would be lost in the various filter cakes, depending on the economic washing limits. In the leaching step, however, some of the SO2 is oxidized to dithionale instead of sulphate, accord- ing to the following overall reaction: ZnO + 2SO2(g) + 1/2 O2(g) = Zn++S2O6-, [5] so that the dithionate losses are made up, at least in part. Ores and Concentrates Tested The analyses of the ores and concentrates tested are summarized in Table 1, which also includes the analyses of the calcines produced from the concentrates. The concentrates were roasted in a laboratory muffle furnace at the temperatures indicated until evolution of SO2 could no longer be detected; shallow clay dishes ordinarily were used; but calcines 2a and 2c were prepared in iron dishes, with the result that these two calcines were badly contaminated with iron scale. The "complex" concentrate, sample 1, consisted essentially of sphalerite grains containing inclusions of pyrite and other sulphide minerals too minute to be liberated by grinding within economic limits. In the " marmatitic" concentrate, sample 2, the iron was present largely as marmatite (that is, as iron sulphide in solid solution in zinc sulphide) rather than as pyrite inclusions. The zinc was present largely as the carbonate in the two "oxidized" ores, samples 3 and 4, and as the silicate in the "willemite" ore, sample 5. Leaching Tests The leaching cell was a 3-liter glass beaker placed in an electrically heated water bath manually controlled to maintain a temperature of 35°C in the leach slurry. STANDARD raises at Homestake are 150 ft long. Raises of more than 150 ft, driven with the use of a cage and hoist, are considered long raises- some have been driven more than 900 ft. Long raises have eliminated the need for access drifts on each level when transfer and ventilation raises are driven. These timbered cage raises, 7x9 ft in cross section, include a rock compartment and a combination cage, pipe, and manway compartment. To prevent excessive weight on the timbers, 10x10-in. bearing beams are cemented into hitches cut in the rock at 150-ft intervals. The beams also hold back timber movement caused by daily drawing of rock through the rock compartment.

(Chattanooga Meeting, October, 1908.) THE immense commercial value of the Gayley dry-blast process has been established beyond controversy. The testimony of practical blast-furnace managers, on both sides of the Atlantic, agrees that it reduces the cost of pig-iron about $1 per ton; but from the same testimony it appears that this direct economy does not by any means cover its commercial advantages-in fact, that under conditions frequently encountered in practice, it presents other benefits of even greater immediate financial importance. To this point I shall recur in a later part of the present paper. The history of the reception given to this invention, especially on the other side of the Atlantic, has repeated an experience familiar to American engineers. First, the reports of our practice were rejected as theoretically impossible, according to generally accepted notions and formulas; then the figures were reluctantly accepted ; and finally the attempt has been made to explain how they could have been obtained. As to the Gayley dry blast, we Americans have been for several years in the last stage of the discussion, and the rest of the professional world is rapidly coming to it. Meanwhile, the remark has been repeatedly made that, whatever Mr. Gayley's process may turn out to be worth, it was not an invention on his part, but simply the energetic and persevering execution of a procedure already proposed by others. This question I wish to discuss first in the present paper. I. WHAT DID MR. GAYLEY INVENT Realizing that this is not the place for detailed argument on an issue of patent law, I shall not undertake to quote and criticise the publications prior to Mr. Gayley's first patents. Introduction In August 1977, the federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act was signed into law. It stated that: "The Congress finds and declares that because of the diversity in terrain . . . and other physical conditions in areas subject to mining operations, the primary governmental responsibility for developing. authorizing, issuing, and enforcing regulations for surface mining and reclamation operations subject to the Act should rest with the States." Section 516 of Title V (Control of the Environmental Impacts of Surface Coal Mining) of the Act deals with the surface effects of underground coal mining operations. "Each permit issued under any approved State or Federal program pursuant to this Act and relating to underground coal mining shall require the operator to adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence. causing material damage, to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and maintain the value and reasonable foreseeable use of such surface lands, except in those instances where the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner: Provided, that nothing in this subsection shall be construed to prohibit the standard method of room and pillar mining." This section raises many questions. Precisely what is the "reasonably foreseeable" future as far as land use is concerned? And what is the "standard method of room and pillar mining"? The first part of the paragraph seems to rule out longwall mining, but isn't longwalling a "predictable" manner of "planned subsidence"? Does the Act take into account variations among mining methods in differing regions or coal seams? With these questions and the need to comply with the Act's provisions in mind, many states may turn to the Pennsylvania Bituminous Mine Subsidence Act of 1966- the only comprehensive subsidence act passed by any state-as a model for their own programs. Thus, it is very important to evaluate Pennsylvania's Act to see whether its basic assumptions can accommodate national application. This paper will note the Subsidence Act's provisions and guidelines, briefly analyze the current state-of-the-art in subsidence damage prevention and control, and list several recommendations for altering the Act's application guidelines for different mining areas.

The 1100°c isothermal, sections of the V-Fe-Si, V-Co-Si, and V-Ni-Si systems were studied at silicon contents between 0 and 40 at. pct. The single-phase fields in the 30 and 50 at. pct Mn sections of the 1100°C tetrahedron of the V-'Wn-Fe-Si system were also determined. The direction of extension of the elongated O, R, D, and a-Mn Phase fields suggests that the stability of these phases is determined largely by the electron concentration. The peculiar shape of the above ternary a phase fields, as well as of the a phase fields in the V-;Mn-Si and Cr-MTZ-Si systems is accounted for on the assumption that in manganese-(iron-, coball-, nickel-) rich alloys silicon atoms do not exclude d electrons , while in alloys low in the above components they do. This assumption also leads to the expected electronconcentrations for q and ß-Mn phases formed by transition metals with aluminurn. In earlier work it was shown that in ternary alloy systems of transition elements the a a and certain other phases with complex structure, such as the p and R phases,3 form elongated phase fields extending in a direction corresponding to a constant electron concentration. Recently similar behavior was observed in manganese-rich ternary ß-Mn solid solutions with another transition element and with silicon, germanium, or tin,4 confirming earlier indications3 that ß-Mn is also an electron phase. The alloying behavior of silicon in these manganese-rich alloys sug- gested that the four outside electrons of silicon participate in the bonding and that the predominantly d-like bonding electrons are not excluded from the silicon sites. Presumably, some of the normally unoccupied 3d states associated with the silicon atoms are in these alloys lowered to the Fermi level;4 thus silicon behaves as if it, too, were a transition element. The manganese-rich boundary of the a phase in the V-Mn-Si system,4 as well as in the Cr-Mn-Si sys-tem,4,5 extends approximately parallel to the ß-Mn phase boundary, corresponding to the transition ele-mentlike behavior of silicon described above. However, at lower manganese contents (i.e., in the high-vanadium or -chromium region) the a phase field in both ternary systems mentioned extends in a direction roughly perpendicular to that of its manganese-rich boundary, a phenomenon that is apparently inconsistent with the behavior of silicon in the manganese-rich alloys. A similar, although somewhat less pronounced, extension of the a phase occurs also in the high-vanadium (low-iron) region of the V-Fe-Si system at 1175C, but reportedly not in the V-Co-Si or V-Ni-Si systems at the same temperature.5 The present work was undertaken to investigate in more detail the extension of the a phase (as well as of other electron phases that may be present) in the last three systems and to elucidate this phenomenon, which has not been satisfactorily explained previously. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Most of the alloys were melted in an arc furnace, using a water-cooled copper crucible under helium atmosphere. The transition metals were of better than 99.9 pct purity and the silicon used was 99.98 pct pure. Alloys containing less than 20 pct V were induction-melted in recrystallized alumina crucibles under argon atmosphere.

The central region of the Ti-Mn system was studied by means of x-ray diffraction and metallography. The following intermediate phases were found: an MgZn2-type Laves phase having a wide range of homogeneity, the p-phase of unknozvn structure, and the + -phase with a large tetragonal unit cell, stable at 930°C and lower temperatuves. MaYKUTH, Ogden, and jaffee1 determined the soh-inh bility limits of manganese in and titanium. They also confirmed the structure of the intermediate phase TiMn2 which was previously identified as a Laves phase of the MgZn2 type.2 In the equiatomic region they found an additional intermediate phase, y, which presumably formed by a peritectic reaction at approximately 1200°C. This last observation was disputed by Rostoker, Elliott, and McPhers0n,3 who reported the formation of TiMn by a peritectoid reaction between 900" and 1000° C, but found no evidence of any intermediate phase other than the Laves phase at higher temperatures. Elliott and Rostoker4 reported furthermore that the X-ray diffraction pattern of TiMn could be identified as that of a o phase, although their data were not consistent with this inter~retation. Margolin and Ence6 presented X-ray diffraction data for the and TiMn, phases, and obtained metallographic indications for the existence of additional intermediate phases. They concluded from metallographic observations that two Laves phases are formed, separated by another phase, designated as &. A phase diagram for the Mn-Ti system has recently been published by Savitskii and Kopetskii,' which shows considerable disagreement with the work of Hellawell and Hume-Rothery,' in particular with regard to the terminal solid solutions based on the allotropes of manganese. The present investigation was undertaken primarily to clarify the phase relationships in the equiatomic region of the Ti-Mn system. The metals used in preparing the alloy specimens Were iodide titanium and electrolytic manganese, the latter having a nominal purity of approximately 99.9 pet. The electrolytic manganese was covered with a thick coating of a brown manganese oxide which was reduced by heating the manganese flakes for several hours at a temperature of 1100°C in an atmosphere of dry hydrogen. Three alloys, see Table I, were made using sponge titanium and manganese not treated in hydrogen. The alloys were prepared by arc-melting in an atmosphere of helium or argon. The composition of each alloy was calculated by assuming that the entire weight loss during melting was due to evaporation of manganese. Subsequent chemical analysis of certain alloys indicated that the compositions calculated in this manner were usually correct within 1.4 pct, as shown in Table I. All alloy specimens were wrapped in molybdenum foil before sealing them in silica tubes containing argon at a pressure of 1 atm at the annealing temperature. After quenching in cold water, the alloy specimens were bright and clean, with no evidence of any surface reaction. The alloys listed in Table I were examined metallographically, using an etchant consisting of 20 pet HNO3, 20 pet HF, and 60 pet Glycerine. powder for X-ray diffraction examination was prepared by crushing a portion of each annealed alloy

THE Industrial Minerals Division this year held no individual sessions of its own except the business meeting Tuesday afternoon. One session was held jointly with the Society of Economic Geologists, one with the Milling Methods Committee, and two with the Society of Economic Geologists and the Mining Geology Committee. At all of these meetings the attendance was better than usual and the Tuesday afternoon session, with nearly 400 present, probably set a new record for the Division. Joint sessions seem extremely popular when papers of mutual interest are presented. On Monday afternoon, mica was the predominating subject. The North Carolina mines provided most of the information presented, although the discussion brought out similarities with the New England mines. B. C. Burgess particularly stressed the fact that with the existing curtailment of mica from India it is necessary to get the most mica in the shortest time from the mines in this country. He said that the Colonial Mica Corp. hopes to have 1000 mines operating in the near future. This seems a great number, but when one considers that these mines employ from 3 to 28 men, mostly nearer the low figure, the output of each mine is relatively small. Although the price of mica is from six to ten times the prewar price, the yield of 8 to 150 lb. of mica per ton of raw ore does not provide high returns to the producer.

The number of wells completed in Ohio during I940 was about 20 per cent more than during the preceding year, the comparative totals being 1020 and 1228. Of the 1940 completions, 327 were oil wells, 491 gas wells, and 410 dry. The completions for the past five years, divided into oil wells, gas wells, and dry holes, are shown in Table 2. Wells drilled deeper and input wells in water-flood areas are not included in the tabulation. The annual production of oil has decreased steadily in Ohio from the maximum of 23,941,000 bbl. produced in 1896. Table 3 shows the quantities of oil produced in the last five years. In 1940, the total was 3,052,000 bbl., produced by about 25,500 wells. The number of wells and the approximate quantities by grades are shown in Table I. A NOTED ordnance engineer once said to a friend, in speaking of the production of great steel guns, "How is it? We design our guns with a factor of safety of eight, and the guns burst." The vague way in which internal stresses and strains in iron and steel are often considered and spoken of makes it worth-while to examine them, as to their nature, their causes and results, how they may, for useful purposes, be advantageously dealt with, and how, when detrimental or dangerous, they may be reduced or kept within harmless proportions. Rankine defines ?strain " as a change of form or dimensions of a solid or liquid mass produced by a stress. This definition seems not intended to cover strains due to internal stresses, and it will help us in the present inquiry to consider strain as a tendency to change as well as an actual change of form. Internal strains in iron and steel are the result of stresses within the mass of the piece, some parts pulling and others pushing in resistance to them; or, in other words, some parts are in tension and some in compression, each part striving to relieve itself from strain and make the piece assume a form in which all parts are at rest. Subdivision, so that each part could relieve its strain by motion relative to the other parts, would, if carried out far enough, practically obliterate strain. The internal strains we are now to consider are not those due to the stresses of the service which the piece is rendering, either alone or as, a part of a structure, which may be termed service-strains, but those which originate or at least are contained in the piece itself. IF one is to place any credence at all in the reports published in the daily press, the subject of conservation has been a very lively topic of conversation during the past 60 days, and it does not appear that the temperature of the summer months has been in any way moderated by the discussion. It is a subject in which we are all vitally interested and to which, so far as our mineral resources are concerned, both the Institute and the Geological Survey have liberally contributed. The report of the National Conservation Commission, appointed by President Roosevelt, contains a series of papers on the conservation of mineral resources, all of which were prepared by members of the Geological Survey and were compiled largely from information previously collected by that Federal bureau in the performance of its regular duties. It is not the purpose of this paper to reiterate in extenso any of the material already published. The contributions of the Survey officials to the Commission's report have been published in a separate document as Bulletin No. 394. This docunient is for free distribution and may be obtained upon application to the Director of the Survey. In the preparation of this paper I desire merely to make a few suggestions regarding the possible necessity of some restraint upon or control of one branch of the mining industry with which I have been somewhat closely associated for the past 20 years-that of coal. Most of the members of the Institute are cognizant of the suits brought by the government against the anthracite-operators in Pennsylvania, or the combination of interests commonly known as the ? hard-coal trust." A substantial reduction in the 300°F ductile-to-brittle transition temperature for unalloyed chromium was achieved in alloys from systems which resemble the Cr-Re system. These alloy systems include Cr-Ru, Cr-Co, and Cr-Fe. Transition temperatures ranged from -300° F for Cr-35 at. pct Re to -75°F for 0-50 at. pct Fe. The ductile alloys have high grain gvowth rates at elevated temperatures. Also, Cr-24 at. pct Ru exhibited enhanced tensile ductility at elevated temperatures, characteristic of superplas-ticity. It is concluded that phase relations play an importarlt role in the rhenium ductilizing effect. The ductile alloys have compositions near the solubility limit in systems with a high terminal solubility and which contain an intermediate o phase. The importance of enhanced high-temperature ductility to the rhenium ductilizing effect is not well understood although both may have common basic features. CHROMIUM alloys are currently being investigated for advanced air-breathing engine applications, primarily as turbine buckets and/or stator vanes. The inherent advantages of chromium as a high-temperature structural material are well-known1 and include its high melting point relative to superalloys, moderately high modulus of elasticity, low density, good thermal shock resistance, and superior oxidation resistance as compared to the other refractory metals. Additionally, it is capable of being strengthened by conventional alloying techniques. The major disadvantage of chromium is its poor ductility at ambient temperatures, a problem which it shares with the other two Group VI-A metals, molybdenum and tungsten. For chromium, the problem is further amplified by its susceptibility to nitrogen em-brittlement during high-temperature air exposure. In cases of severe nitrogen embrittlement, the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature might exceed the steady-state operating temperature of the component. The low ductility of chromium would make stator vanes and turbine buckets prone to foreign object damage. The present work was directed towards improvement of the ductility of chromium through alloying, with the anticipation that any improvements so obtained might be additive to strengthening improvements achieved through different types of alloying. The alloying additions for ductility were selected on the basis of the similarity of their phase relations with chromium to that of Cr-Re. The reduction in the ductile-to-brittle transition temperatures of the Group VI-A metals as a result of alloying with 25 to 35 pct Re is well established.a4 the temperature range -300" to 750° F. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as the &apos;<rhenium ductilizing effect"; this term is also used to describe systems in which the ductilizing element is not rhenium. Other alloy systems which have recently been shown to exhibit the rhenium ductilizing effect include Cr-Co and c-Ru.= In order to explore the generality of this effect, alloys were selected from systems having phase relations similar to that of Cr-Re, primarily a high solubility in chromium and an intermediate o phase. The following compositions were prepared: Cr-35 and -40Re; Cr-10, -15, -18, -21, -24, and -27 pct Ru; Cr-25 and -30 pct Co; Cr-30, -40, and -50 pct Fe; Cr-45, -55, and -65 pct Mn. Seven other systems were also studied which partially resemble Cr-Re. These systems have extensive chromium solid solutions or a complex intermediate phase, not necessarily o. The compositions evaluated include the following: Cr-20 pct Ti; Cr-15, -30, and -45 pct V; Cr-2.5 pct Cb; Cr-2.5 pct Ta; Cr-20 pct Ni; Cr-6, -9, -12, and -15 pct 0s; Cr-10 pct Ir. The compositions of alloys in these systems were chosen near the solubility limit for the chromium-base solid solutions, since in the Group VI-A Re systems, the saturated alloys are the most ductile. These alloys were evaluated on the basis of hardness, fabricability, and ductile-to-brittle transition temperatures. In addition to the studies of alloying effects on ductility, an exploratory investigation was conducted on mechanical properties at high temperatures in Cr-Ru alloys EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE High-purity chromium prepared by the iodide deposition process was employed for all studies. An analysis of this chromium is given in Table I. Alloying elements were obtained in the following forms: Commercially pure powder — iridium, osmium, rhenium, and ruthenium. Arc-melted ingot — titanium and vanadium. Electrolytic flake — iron, manganese, and nickel. Sheet rolled from electron-bearn-melted ingot — columbium and tantalum. Electron-beam-melted ingot — cobalt. Sheet rolled from arc-melted ingot — rhenium. All alloys were initially consolidated by triple arc melting into 60-g button ingots on a water-cooled hearth using a nonconsumable tungsten electrode. The melting atmosphere was Ti-gettered Ar at a pressure of 20 torr. The ingots were drop cast into rectangular slabs and fabricated by heating at 1470" to 2800° F in argon followed by rolling in air. Bend specimens measuring 0.3 by 0.9 in. were cut from the 0.035-in. sheet parallel to the rolling direction. The specimens were annealed for 1 hr in argon, furnace cooled or water quenched, and electropolished prior to testing. What is a conflict, as it is understood by men of the extractive industries? And what are the circumstances out of which these conflicts arise? A start can be made with the notion of economic conflict, which can be defined as rivalry over the use of economic resources. Such rivalry is a central part of all economizing activity. It is present within the individual, within the family, and within the business firm. In each of these units there are multiple goals competing for use of a limited income. And economic rivalry is present among individuals and firms who are competing with one another for use of the limited quantity of economic resources available to us as a society.

SULPHIDE ore-bodies of more or less lenticular shape occurring in metamorphic crystalline schists, gneisses, and. slates, and conforming closely in strike and usually in dip to the inclosing rock, have been recognized and described along the, Atlantic seaboard from Quebec to Alabama. The ore-bodies do not entirely conform, in all cases, to the structure of the inclosing schists, but they sometimes cut across the foliation in dip, though conforming more closely with the direction of strike. In composition the principal sulphide mineral is usually pyrite or pyrrhotite; or both, accompanied by copper, frequently gold, and almost always some sphalerite and galenite. Other. metallic ores are, so far as these sulphide bodies have been investigated, less common; silver is not uncommon, and in some of the pyrrhotite masses nickel is present in quantity sufficient to be commercially valuable. Cobalt frequently accompanies .the nickel, usually in smaller amount, and the two vary much in relative proportion. Quartz and calcite are probably the most common of the, non-metallic minerals. A number of silicate minerals are frequent representatives in one place or another; garnet, amphibole, biotite, pyroxene, zoisite and others. The sulphide bodies of Virginia, comprising both pyrite and pyrrhotite, are among the most extensive along the Atlantic seaboard. Among the pyrite bodies may be mentioned the well-known and extensively worked mines of Louisa and Prince William, counties, located on&apos; the main pyrite belt (A, Fig. 1) of the middle and northern, eastern Piedmont region in Virginia, and among the pyrrhotite bodies is the famous " Great Gossan Lead "(B, Fig. 1) of the Floyd-Carroll-Graysou coun-

(written discussion).-Permit me to endorse the author&apos;s conclusions and their form of presentation as ,being, in my judgment, the last word &apos;on the subject of lights for the illumination of coal mines. I also feel that the open-flame oil lamp has outlived its usefulness, and that it should go, in the interests not only of safety but of efficiency. Where an open-flame lamp can be used with safety in non-gaseous mines, the acetylene light adds materially to efficiency by its better illumination, and to safety for the numerous reasons given by Mr. Chance. The latter, however, lays chief stress on the value of the acetylene because of its non-fouling and non-obscuring effect on the atmosphere. Another important advantage over any other form of illumination is the clear, bright light projected at the point where the workman may look for danger. The better illumination materially safeguards the worker against obstacles over which he may stumble when traveling, and against dangers from falls of roof or of coal, weakness in timbering, and similar conditions. The acetylene lamp, where it may be used with safety, has advantages even over the present electric cap lamp, in that it gives a higher luminosity; and when the miner comes to learn its signals, as he will in time, just as he learns those given by the open-flame or the safety lamp, he will find that the acetylene lamp is a fair detector not only of methane but of carbon dioxide, as clearly shown by Mr. Chance. The only, serious objection, raised against the use of carbide lamps. has been recently in Pennsylvania, due to the belief of the State Mine Inspection Department that it endangered miners working on pillar work, or other places where carbon dioxide might accumulate, or where there is lack of sufficient ventilation, and because it was believed that the indications of the carbide lamp would not give the miner sufficient warning. On this point Mr. Chance has clearly shown the fallacies of the objections. I may add that for those unable to detect carbon dioxide with the acetylene lamp, the maximum of protection would be afforded by using an open oil lamp or a flame safety lamp in such places; or, because the miner might not watch his oil light, a better, protection still would be offered by a sufficient number of daily inspections of such working places by a fire boss or other official, with flame safety lamp.

THE copper-zinc phase equilibrium diagram has been the sub-ject of many investigations. Until recently, however, the boundary of the terminal solid solution of copper in zinc (eta) has not been thoroughly investigated. This paper reports determinations of the solid solubility of copper in zinc at temperatures from 100° to 400° C., the course of the liquidus and solidus for the eta solid solution and determinations of the peritectic temperature and peritectic point for the reaction between epsilon and the melt to form eta. The liquidus of the eta phase was determined by thermal analysis and the solidus by the microscopical examination of specimens quenched from temperatures above and below the solidus. The temperature of the peritectic horizontal was obtained by thermal analysis and the com-position at the peritectic point was determined by extrapolation of the solid solubility boundary of the eta phase to the peritectic horizontal. The solid solubility boundary of the eta solid solution was investigated very carefully. Particular care was used to achieve equilibrium in the alloys at each temperature selected. The X-ray, electrical con-ductivity and microscopical methods were used in determining the solid solubility limits. The X-ray method measures the changes in the solvent lattice with increasing solute content and in this manner locates the composition of the alloy at which no further change in the solvent lattice takes place, the limit of solid solubility. The method of electrical conductivity measures the conductivity of the alloys of a graded series of compositions, whereby the solubility limit is indicated by a discontinuity in the conductivity-
