13.8-1. Introduction. Table 13.8-1 shows that production from the African continent is an important part of total world mineral production. In three of the major particular resources listed, diamonds, gold, and cobalt, African production accounts for considerably more than half the world output. Overall, South Africa including South West Africa plays a dominant role in the mineral economy of Africa, other than in petroleum production. Table 13.81 also shows that much of the production is won by surface mining methods. In addition to the minerals listed in Table 13.8-1, Africa is a main world source for the following minerals: [Beryl 33% of total world production Columbium-tantalum 50%" " 1' Platinum group metals 20% l' " 11 Corundum 55%" " " 11 Vermiculite 30% (' " (6 Uranium oxide 15 0/, of free world production] South Africa and Rhodesia together account for nearly all of this production, except for columbium (niobium) of which Nigeria is the main producer. Thus the importance of southern Africa as a major mineral province can readily be appreciated. The consequences of serious political or military conflict between white-dominated southern Africa and the rest of the continent would be grave indeed, particularly for the West whose financial and economic interest in Africa as a whole is very large. The development of mineral resources in Africa involves the same basic elements as are involved anywhere else in the world: exploration, drilling and sampling, metallurgical assessment, and economic evaluation before, if it is justified, a prospect is brought to the productive stage. The same range of factors controls the economic viability of a project in Africa as elsewhere, of which the most important are:

FORM of ore bodies, strength of wall rock, and quantity of water that must be handled differ so greatly in the various districts in which the Corporation operates that a variety of mining methods have to be employed. All are underground, however, with the exception of glory holes at Cerro de Pasco from which siliceous silver pacos ore is obtained. In general, the ors is in many relatively small bodies unsuitable for hulk mining, such as caving or top slicing. The strength of the rock and ore rarely permit open stopes, though shrinkage is successfully used on various veins with strong walls, particularly in, Casapalca. Horizontal cut and-fill and square-set stoping with careful filling are the principal methods employed, with the necessarily higher cost for supplies and labor offset as much as possible by care in the avoidance of dilution. The mines at both Morococha and Casapalca are notoriously wet, and even at Cerro de Pasco the quantity of water was enough to retard deep development until the perfection of electric pumps. In Morococha particularly, the extension of successive levels, first from adits of moderate length, then from shafts and heavy pumping installations on the 750 and 1000 levels, and finally by the 30,564-ft. Kingsmill tunnel, was one of the most difficult and long continued fights against water and resulting heavy ground that is recorded in mining history.

Titanium of commercial purity (RC-70) and two all-a (hcp) alloys (4Al-1/4O2 and 5Al-2.5Sn) were tested in sheet form under conditions of combined-stress loading. Plane-strain compression and plane -strain tension together with uniaxial compression and tension provided information for constructing the tension-tension and compression-compression quadvants of the plane-stress yield locus. Coordinate values were obtained from yield-strength measurements; the slope at each point was based on a plastic-strain ratio. The materials represented a wide range of plastic anisotropy, which was reflected in correspondingly varied departures of the yield locus from that for iso-tropy. The tension-tension and compression-compression quadrants were not identical. If the uniaxial yield strength is insensitive to direction and the sign of the applied stress, the Mises or perhaps the Tresca criterion is adequate for predicting the onset of yielding under combined-stress loading. The prediction is not so straightforward in plastically anisotropic material. Depending upon details of texture, combined-stress yielding resistance may be substantially different from that indicated by the usual criteria.' However. a continuum theory of yielding under such conditions is available for reasonably direct application.2,3 Whether or not it can be used successfully must, of course, depend upon how closely the conditions of the theory are satisfied in the material in question. In its present form the theory contains no provision for Bauschinger-type effects, nor does it allow for the consequences that might grow out of deformation by more than one mechanism, e.g., by slip and twinning.4 With those limitations, more importance must be attached to experimental information about the yield surface for anisotropic materials. Studies of the yield surface have generally been confined to states of plane stress (tension-tension and tension-compression) established in thin-wall tubes by externally applied forces and internal pressure. That approach would be entirely suitable for anisotropic materials if they were available in tube form or in sufficient bulk to be machined into test specimens. 6-9 It would not serve for the textured and anisotropic sheets of much current engineering interest, unless sheet could be formed into high-pressure tubing without structural change. Since there would seem to be little chance of the latter, practical alternatives are needed. One such alternative is the subject of this paper. It involves the use of a few selected but relatively simple uniaxial loading tests on sheet specimens. The underlying idea is presented here with some details relating to application and a few results bearing on how well it has worked. THE BASIS OF TESTING Conventional Measurements. Yielding for a general case of anisotropy is described by the plane-stress locus in Fig. 1. Reference directions in the sheet specimen are related to the stress coordinates as shown with the insert: x is the rolling direction, y the transverse direction, and z the through-thickness direction. The four reference-direction yield strengths (t, tension; c, compression), Xt, Xc, Yt, and Yc, are all different. Nine paths that can be followed in uniaxial loading experiments are identified. Paths 1, 2, 3, and 4 represent conventional tension and compression testing to establish Xt, Yt,.Xc, and Yc. Useful information also comes from the ratio of the transverse plastic-strain components associated with yielding and flow in conventional tension or compression. The death of Louis Janin, which took place Mar. 6, 1914, at Santa Barbara, terminated the earthly career of almost the last survivor, and one of the most illustrious members, of that group of American mining engineers and metallurgists who, in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, directed the development of the mineral resources of the Pacific slope. Louis Janin was born in 1836 at New Orleans. His grandfather, an officer in the French army, had emigrated to this country, with his family, at or before the outbreak of the French revolution. When Mr. Bailey asked us to present a paper describing our new BOF shop, he requested that we avoid a presentation heavily laden with detail and statistics. Not only have we attempted to do this, but also we have prepared a number of colour slides which, hopefully, will provide you with a graphic conception of the facility. The installation of the BOF facility at the Steel Co. of Canada's Hilton Works was delayed many years because of the remarkable production growth of the oxygen open hearth furnaces in No. 3 shop. However, in mid-1960 it became strongly evident that not only would increased ingot capacity be required, but also that N0.2 shop - with vintage non-oxygen open hearth furnaces - would have to clean its stacks in the near future, or be closed down. A decision to embark on the BOF facility was made in 1967 after an extended period of in-depth planning and assessment of industry trends.

A method is presented by which homogeneous, isotropic, and reproducible aggregates of particles such as glass beads, sand, ground glass, etc., may be prepared simply and quickly by using a "particle distributor". Several applications of the packing method to the construction of model reservoirs are described. The flow characteristics of these packings me given. Some factors which limit the usefulness of unconsolidated packs for simulating reservoir rock are overcome through artificial cementation of the aggregates. INTRODUCTION Many laboratory studies of porous media are based on experiments using test packs of sand, glass beads and other granular materials. More confidence can be had in the results of such studies if the test packs are known to have uniform properties throughout, to be mechanically stable and to be accurately reproducible. This paper presents a method by which such packs of a variety of shapes and sizes may be constructed using a particle distributor. Some factors which limit the usefulness of unconsolidated packs as a means for simulating reservoir rock are described. A method of overcoming these limitations, which involves artificial cementation of the packs, is presented. DEVELOPMENT Particles packed by the tamping or vibrating techniques are usually either non-uniform or mechanically unstable. An invention by Currie and Gregoryl overcomes these difficulties to some extent. The invention is based on the use of a stream of falling particles impinging on and passing through a distributor matrix of several layers of closely spaced spheres. The particles are well dispersed by numerous collisions with the spheres. They become homogeneously distributed at some distance below the distributor matrix and at that position are collected in the sample container. This apparatus, however, was found to be ineffective when small particles were used since small particles accumulate on the top surfaces of the spheres. An improved distributor matrix was made, first in the form of a stack of five sieves, and then in the more adaptable form of spaced layers of wire screen. Fig. 1 shows a longitudinal view through a five-layered distributor of eight-mesh wire screen. This device gives excellent results.* Fine particles pass through the distributor with very little hold up. The fine structure of the wire matrix with its many deflecting surfaces ensures good particle distribution. There are no dead areas immediately below the screen as were sometimes observed to occur below a matrix of spheres. Using such a device, 20-30 mesh sands were packed to a porosity of 32.1 per cent at rates varying from 0.17 to 6 lb/rnin. The lowest porosity achieved by tamping small increments of similar sands into a container was 33 per cent. Motion pictures at 3,000 frarnes/sec of the surface of a growing pack of 2-3/4 mm glass beads have helped to show the mechanism by which packs of low porosity are obtained. The beads, although packed at the rate of 5 lb/min, were observed to hit the pack surface singly, for the most part, and at well spaced points of impact. STUDIES of structure-sensitive properties, especially mechanical behavior, have shown that grain and subgrain structure play an important role. The mechanical properties of tungsten, in particular, are sensitive to the nature of the intergranular structure. Substructure and dislocation networks in single-crystal and polycrystalline tungsten have been studied by Nakayama et al.' Various orders of substructure were observed ranging from a microscopic first order (grain diameter: 2 to 8 mm) to a microscopic second order (grain diameter: 50 to 300 p), and, within the latter, dislocation networks forming an even smaller order of substructure. In their single crystals, grown by arc fusion, the degree of misorientation in each order was small: 16'3OU, -11, and -10" for the first-, second-, and third-order substructure, respectively. To study the properties of polycrystalline tungsten, powder metallurgy tungsten is generally used. However, in a mechanical property investigation, the zone-melted or arc-fusion crystals are more desirable than the powder metallurgy product due to their higher purity and absence of porosity and other defects inherent in consolidation by powder metallurgy. Grain boundaries can also be produced in melted stock by working and recrystallizing. However, material with subgrain mis orientations of the order of several degrees (high-angle substructure) has not been reported previously and is the subject of this communication. Crystals were grown by electron-beam, floating-zone melting. The starting material, Sylvania Pure-tung welding rod, was given one zone pass at a traversal rate of -2 mm per min. Through control of the zone temperature, it was possible to influence the degree of crystal perfection. By maintaining the zone at a high degree of superheat, high-perfection crystals could be grown. However, at temperatures only slightly above the melting point, the zone-melted crystals contained a high-angle substructure. A sensitive control of the zone temperature was not possible due to the difficulty of estimating the temperature of the zone and of providing a constant supply of power to the sample. Therefore, an empirical method, using the shape of the molten zone as a criterion, was adopted as an indication of temperature. At high degrees of superheat, the surface tension of the molten zone decreases and a neck forms at the top of the zone, whereas at low zone temperatures the diameter of the zone remains reasonably uniform. Although it was not possible to obtain a continuous variation of misfit angle, the conditions could be directed toward the growth of either high- or low-angle substructure by maintaining only a slight neck in the zone (sufficient to establish that it was molten) or a well-necked zone, respectively. Mass spectrographic analyses of both types of material revealed no significant differences in the concentrations of their impurities. The degree of misorientation at high angles was obtained by measuring the angular spread of spots corresponding to a single reflection on a Laue back-reflection photograph. Fig. 1 shows a typical Laue back-reflection photograph of a crystal with a 3-deg spread. By measuring the angular deviation of the spots corresponding to a single reflection from the mean center of the spots around which constant angular deviation contours were drawn, an average angular spread of misfit could be calculated. The angular average was weighted by the number of spots observed in each angular interval. At angles greater than 5 to 6 deg the spots from different reflections begin to overlap, and cannot be associated with a particular reflection. Laue back-reflection photographs taken at different locations on samples .with approximately 3-deg spreads showed only a small difference in angular misorientation, less than 8' of arc, within individual specimens. The microstructure was examined using Berg-Barrett X-ray extinction contrast microscopy. Berg-Barrett photographs taken directly on the as-grown surface, Fig. 2, show an essentially equiaxed subgrain structure of -0.1 mm in average grain diameter in both high- and low-angle crystals. THE free-swelling index, a numerical value for the free-swelling properties of coal, is being used to an increasing extent in specifying coal for burning in various types of equipment. The empirical standard ASTM method for determining this index uses, as a source of heat, a gas burner which requires frequent calibration because gas pressures are not constant, relatively small changes in gas pressure resulting in rather wide variations in the temperature attained in a crucible and thus in the resultant size of the coke button. Furthermore, the quartz crucibles specified for the test are not standard equipment, and relatively small variations in dimension and wall thickness from those specified often result in rather wide variations in the resultant size of the button. A method of analysis to be satisfactory not only for a scientific laboratory but also for use in industrial control laboratories under varying conditions should employ equipment which is rugged, easily calibrated, and readily replaceable by standard materials. Gas is not universally available as is electricity, and it is generally easier to calibrate and control a simple electric furnace or heater than a gas burner, the voltage not usually fluctuating to the degree that gas pressure does. Quartz crucibles are fragile, and the size specified in the test is not normally used for any other purpose in the laboratory. Although more expensive, the 15-cc platinum crucible, available in all laboratories where volatile matter in coal is determined by the standard ASTM method, is sturdy and standard and easily replaced. Because of these considerations, a modification of the standard method has been developed which employs a standard laboratory 350-w cone heater and standard 15-cc platinum crucibles. The results of numerous tests conducted with such apparatus show conclusively that the free-swelling index values as judged by the buttons produced with this equipment are exactly the same as those obtained by the standard gas burner method. Thus it is suggested that this electric cone heater method employing standard 15-cc platinum crucibles be considered as an alternative to the ASTM method, Designation: D720-46. The free-swelling index of coal is determined by means of the ASTM method, D720-46. This method, which is an adaptation of the crucible swelling test for coal of the British Standards Institution, consists of heating 1 g of coal in a special covered quartz crucible in a regulated gas flame for a period of not less than 2.5 min in which time the temperature of the inner surface of the bottom of the crucible reaches a temperature of 82025°C. The residual coke button is then compared in size and shape with a series of standard profiles shown in Fig. 1 and designated by number from 1 to 9 in increasing order of size. As the method is empirical, it requires rigid standardization of the apparatus and repeated calibration of the gas burner. The dimensions of the low form quartz crucible recommended must be rigidly adhered to as small variations in diameter or wall thickness result in variations in the rate of heat transmission and thus in the resultant size and shape of the coke button. A COMPLETE transformation has taken place in the boras industry during the year 1908. A most remarkable factor in this radical change in method of producing the crude borates has been its removal from the realm of industrial chemistry to the field of mining. With the development of extensive deposits of borate-minerals interstratified in thick sequences of Tertiary clays and sands, their winning becomes a strictly mining-enterprise, of the same kind and of the same certainty as the digging of coal or iron-ore. The major supply of the world's production of commercial borax now comes from the United States. While formerly all of the boric salts of commerce were laboriously extracted from the waters of saline lakes of the arid regions, or from the bottom-salts of desiccated ponds, it later was largely slowly leached from ancient desert shales and clays. During these periods the borax industry was a very hazardous and expensive vocation.

The occurrence qf the V phase structure /Zr,Co,Ge, type) in ternary syste7ns (titanium, zivconium, niobium, lanta1urn) -(nickel, cobalt, iron)-(silicon, germanium) was incestigated. Nine V silicides and four V gertrlanides were found and their lattice constants are reporled. The lattice constants of twenty-one preri-ously identified E phases (TiNiSi type) are given. The average atomic volumes of these phases are discussed in relation to similar binary phases. ThE occurrence of a phase Ti4Ni4Si7 was first reported by Westbrook. DiCerbo, and peat' who gave it the name "V phase". They also reported the existence of an E phase TiNiSi. Subsequently a systematic study was undertaken in this laboratory to explore the occurrence of E' and V phases3 in related ternary systems. In the meantime the crystal structure of the E phase TiNiSi 4 and of the V phase Zr4CO4Ge 75,6 was determined. In the present paper the details of the V phase investigation and the lattice constants of the E and V phases are presented. V PHASES Alloy specimens of approximately 10 to 15 g were prepared by arc melting under argon (99.996 pct Ar) atmosphere. The starting materials were all of purity higher than 99.9 pct, with the exception of cobalt. which contained 0.14 pct Fe as the only major impurity. The weight losses were in all cases less than 2 pct, in most cases less than 1 pct. The samples were encapsulated in fused silica tubes with sufficient argon to yield about 1 atm pressure at the annealing temperature. After the homogenization anneal. Table I. the specimens were water-quenched. A representative portion of each specimen was then examined metallographically (etchant: 20 pct HNO,. 10 pct HF. 25 pct glycerine, 45 pct H20). Only minor amounts of second- and third-phase particles were observed in the specimens listed in Table I, with the exception of alloys Zr4Fe4Si7 and Ta,Fe,Si,. which contained an estimated 10 pct by volume of foreign phases. X-ray powder photographs were taken with a Seeman-Bohlin type focusing camera and Fe-KO radiation. Of the thirty possible combinations of elements in the ternary systems (titanium, zirconium. vanadium. niobium. tantalum)-(iron. cobalt, nickel)-(silicon. germanium) thirteen V phases could be identified. In the remaining seventeen ternary systems and also in the systems Cr-Ni-Si and (M0.W)-(Ni.Co)-Si no V phase was found at the composition 4:4:7 after annealing at temperatures between 900" and 1200'C. For the determination of the lattice constants of the V phases Debye-Scherrer photographs were taken using the asymmetric film arrangement and CrKcr radiation (ka1, = 2.28962A). Using the positional parameters, as determined6 for Zr,Co,Ge,. Table 11. intensity calculations were carried out for each of the V phases with the aid of a computer program.: Thus unequivocal indexing of the diffraction patterns was greatly facilitated. The lattice constants. Table I. were then computed by a least-squares fit of the high-angle lines with f (0) = cos2 Q as extrapolation function. The bottom water drive analysis presented by Muskat has been extended to include fields with wider well spacings. Curves are presented from which volumetric sweepout, water-oil ratio, and rate relations may be calculated. The effects of non-unity ratios on sweepout eficiency and productivity decline have been studied by an approximate method. Also, the effect of gravity on volumetric sweepout has been approximated for a particurlar geometry. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to report work done in applying the analysis of bottom water drive reservoirs given by Muskat1 to a larger class of reservoirs, to extend this analysis to include the effects of gravity and non-unity mobility ratios in an approximate manner, and to investigate the rate of decline of productive capacity. The bottom water drive type reservoir is one where the oil is underlain by a water zone of sufficient thickness that water movement is essentially vertical. This system is defined in more detail in the appendix and a one well element is shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1. Muskat obtained solutions to the equations describing the volumetric displacement efficiency of idealized bottom water drive systems by assuming that gravity effects due to differences in density betwecn oil and water were negligible and that the mobilities of oil and water were the same. If either of these assumptions is not made, the complexity of the system makes an analytical solution well nigh impossible at the present stage of mathematical development. Coles and Stade' developed an approximation to consider these factors. The authors have refined approximations, starting with the same basic assumption, which should give a somewhat quantitative picture of bottom water drive performance when mobilities are not equal and the effects of gravity are not negligible. The results of these approximate calculations can then be used to obtain the decline in well productivity as the field is depleted.

SMALL additions of potassium, aluminum, and silicon as oxides (referred to as dope) to tungsten have been known for several decades to have a very large effect in raising the recrystallization temperature and altering the recrystallized grain morphology of heavily drawn wire. Previous investigations of this doping effect1 6 have led to various speculations but all failed to deduce unequivocally the physical state or the mechanistic influence of the dopant. Recently, walter7 has observed, by transmission electron microscopy, strings of "fine particles" in heavily rolled and annealed doped tungsten sheet and concluded that they were particles of mullite (Al6Si2013). His conclusion was inferred from the electron diffraction patterns of large particles ex-trated by carbon replication of fractured surfaces of slabs rolled from sintered ingots. That the strings of "fine particles" in heavily rolled and annealed sheet were also mullite was an assumption for which no evidence was presented. A similar investigation has been carried out in this laboratory over the past 2 years on a variety of tungsten wire: doped tungsten, and undoped tungsten, as well as 218 doped tungsten purchased from the Lamp Metals and Components Department of the G.E. Lamp Division. Although the electron microscope observations are similar to those reported by Walter, the writer has reached a different conclusion concerning the physical state of the dopant in annealed tungsten. The purpose of this communication is to present evidence that the strings of "fine particles" observed in transmission specimens are not mullite, but are voids. In the present investigation, tungsten wire, 0.88 mm in diam, was rolled into ribbon 0.2 mm by 125 µ thick. The ribbons were annealed in vacuo at a pressure of -1 x 10-5 Torr and then thinned electrolytically in a 2 pct KOH solution. Fig. 1 shows a typical transmissicjn electron micrograph of a sample annealed at 1700°C for 30 min which reveals rows of closely spaced voids having a light contrast (referred to as "fine particles" by Walter) aligned parallel to the working direction. Stereo micrographs (by D. Moon, Westinghouse Research and Development Center) have shown that these voids do not exist on the surfaces of the specimens as a result of thinning but are within the thin-foil specimens. The following experiments have been performed to verify that these are indeed voids. I) Effect of Annealing. Voids are absent in unannealed specimens and appear only after annealing. This behavior cannot be explained if they were solid particles such as mullite. Precipitation (in an unquenched specimen) upon annealing requires solute elements having decreasing solubilities with increasing temperature. Although the solubility of aluminum in tungsten does decrease with increasing temperature, precipitation requires a concentration in excess of 1.4 wt pct,8 which is at least two orders of magnitude higher than the aluminum content in doped tungsten. A new method of satellite imagery analysis has been developed during underground mine roof research. Landsat positive film transparencies were projected onto topographic base maps to scale and lineaments enhanced with a Ronchi grating (method A). Thirty-five millimeter slides of video-enhanced scenes were also projected onto base maps (method B). Both methods permit direct plotting of lineaments to scale and direct correlation with surface and subsurface data wing transparent overlays.

In the spring of 1935 the writers undertook to compare the geomagnetic and direct-current earth-resistivity methods of tracing a concealed dike along its strike. As far as they are aware no such direct test has been attempted.# The area surveyed lies along United States Highway number 15 about one and one-half miles east of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and northeast of Bolin Creek (Fig, 1). To the south of the highway is the flood plain of Bolin Crook, and to the north is a hill that rises almost to the elevation of Chapel Hill. A diabase dike, which strikes slightly west of north, out-crops in a. gully just south of the highway. Southward it has been covered by alluvium but northward outcrops again on the southeastern slope of the hill north of the highway. South of the highway the country rock is Triassic shale and sandstone, the northern limit of which is slightly north of the road. On the Geological Map of the United States I the pre-Triassic formations are shown as lower Glenarm and assigned a pre-Cambrian age. Since the ago of the Glenarm has been called into question in Pennsylvania 2, the writers prefer not to commit themselves as to the ago of these rocks further than to say that they are definitely pre-Triassic.
