The activity of aluminum in solid Co-A1 alloys has been measured by an isopiestic technique between 850° and 1200°C from 45 to 80 at. pct Al. The activity shows a Precipitous decrease around the stoichzornetric composition of CoAl. Free energies of mixing have been calculated over a limited composition range. Considering an antistructure-vacancy defect mechanism, the degree of intrinsic disorder, a , in CoAl was related to the alunminum activity. Excellent agreement between the calculated and experimental activity curves was obtained for a = 1.25 x 10-4. ThERMODYNAMIC properties of solid aluminum-transition metal alloy are being studied in an investigation of disordering in ordered compounds. In a continuing series of investigations, activities of solid Fe-1,' Ni-A1, kd r-A13 alloys have been measured. From the results for Fe-A1 and Ni-A1, the degree of intrinsic disorder for the equiatomic compounds was calculated2 using equations derived by Wagner and chottk. From the results for Cr-A1 the degree of intrinsic disorder was calculated from equations derived by Orr.' In this paper, the results of the study of Co-A1 alloys are described. Published activity data in the Co-A1 system has been limited to liquid alloys at 1600°C.° A heat capacity study7 of stoichiometric CoAl indicated that a second-order phase transformation occurs at 790° C, attributed to an order-disorder reaction. Oelsen and Middel,' employing the calorimetric mixing of pure liquid metals, obtained heats of formation for compositions from 6 to 90 at. pct Co. Heats of formation for 50 and 78 at. pct Co alloys have also been measured by acid solution calrimetr. The Co-A1 phase diagram, as compiled by Hansen and Anderko,lo is in good agreement with more recent X-ray evidence. The method for measuring activities of aluminum in this study is essentially that employed in the studies of the Fe-1,' i-Al, and r-A13 systems. This isopiestic method entails placing cobalt specimens, in a temperature gradient, in a sealed alumina system containing a pure liquid aluminum source of fixed vapor pressure. The specimens are equilibrated, cooled to room temperature, and their final compositions determined. From the measured temperature of the specimens and the known vapor pressure of pure aluminum the activities of aluminum in the alloy can be calculated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The cobalt was 3-mil-thick sheet of 99.9 pct purity (herritt Gordon Mines Ltd., anada). The major impurities were 0.1 pct Ni, 0.014 pct C, 0.018 pct Fe, 0.004 pct S, and 0.005 pct Cu. The aluminum metal had a purity of 99.99 pct (Aluminum Corp. of America) and all alumina parts were 99.7 pct A1,O3 (Triangle RR Grade, Morganite Refractories, Inc.) with major impurities 0.05 pct SiOz, 0.1 pct Fe203, 0.2 pct NazO, and 0.05 pCt K20. Runs 1 to 3 were made with annular cobalt specimens (12 mm ID by 21 mm OD) punched from the sheet. The specimens were deburred and degreased in carbon tetrachloride and in acetone. The samples, each weighing about 150 mg, were then positioned along an alumina rod, a in. OD by 14 in. long, separated by alumina spacers, i in. ID by | in. OD by & in. long. The lower end of the rod was placed in a hole drilled in the center of an 80-g aluminum cylinder. This assembly was put into an alumina crucible, 1+ in. ID by 13 in. OD by 3+ in. high, and the position of each sample was measured to within 50.5 mm relative to the bottom of the crucible. An alumina tube, 28.5 mm ID by 35.5 mm OD by 14 in. long, closed at the top, was slipped over the whole assembly, so that it fitted snugly into the bottom crucible. The entire reaction assembly was tied with molybdenum wire and lowered into a mullite tube, closed at the bottom. A quartz thermocouple tube, closed at one end, containing a t/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple, calibrated according to the specifications of the National Bureau of standards,'' was placed along the reaction assembly inside the mullite tube. The temperature of each specimen could be determined by gradually raising the thermocouple and measuring the temperature gradient along the reaction assembly. The combined error in temperature measurement and sample position resulted in a total error of Q°C in the recorded temperature of each sample. The mullite tube was sealed at the top by a water-cooled brass head, connected to a conventional glass vacuum system. The aluminum reservoir is heated to its melting point sealing the alumina system containing the samples. During this process the pressure is maintained below 0.01 li Hg. During subsequent heating to establish the proper temperature gradient and throughout the entire run the pressure is maintained below 2 1 Hg by means of a two-stage mechanical pump. Equilibration runs lasted from 4 to 6 weeks and were terminated by air cooling. The temperature of the liquid aluminum reservoir was brought below its melting point in less than 20 min. For runs 4 and 5, alloy buttons with 49 and 69 at. pct A1 were prepared from the initial high-purity metals by arc melting under purified argon. The alloy buttons were comminuted to powder with an alumina mortar and pestle until the powder passed through a 400-mesh screen, particle size 0.0014 in. THE EL TIGRE MINE is a highgrade silver and gold producer located in the northern part of Sonora, Mexico. It has been worked continuously since 1903, producing 50,000.000 oz. of silver and returning handsome dividends. During 1930 and 1931 falling silver prices compelled the Tigre company to make representations before the Department of Labor in Mexico City showing the necessity for drastic reductions in wages and personnel. The delays in obtaining permission from the Federal Labor Board to make these readjustments caused the company to suffer considerable financial loss during those years. After the reduction in operations was finally effected, the Sonora state government headed by Señor Francisco Elias (former Governor, now Secretary of Agriculture) and Señor Rodolfo Elias Calles (present Governor and eldest son of Señor Plutarco Elias Calles, recently Secretary of War and former President of Mexico) have cooperated with the company to make continued operation possible by revising downward certain state taxes that would have been a factor in forcing the closing of this mine. Also, permission to change our workmen over to another system of mining was essential to continued operation.

G EOPHYSICAL prospecting was presented in its several aspects and discussed with much vigor at two sessions during this year's annual meeting of the Institute. The first session was devoted entirely to the presentation and discussion of various technical papers, while the second meeting took the form of a round table conference on the advisability of revising the existing mining laws to recognize the results of geophysical prospecting. This conference was immediately followed by further consideration of technical papers. Each session was well attended and great interest was displayed by everyone present.

The engineering and metallurgical assessment of the McLaughlin Project ore body concluded that an open-pit mine and cyanide leach mill process would be feasible, producing both waste rock and residual mill tailings. As a part of the planning and permitting process, site selection studies were conducted for the tailings and waste rock disposal. The site selection process began with a regional identification of potential disposal sites and proceeded through 1) regional screening, 2) elimination of sites with obvious fatal flaws, 3) qualitative ranking of site evaluation criteria, 4) quantitative ranking of sites, 5) field investigation, 6) evaluations of field data, and 7) selection of preferred sites. Based on this approach of site rankings and field evaluations, tailings and waste rock disposal sites were selected and recommended for the preliminary design phase of the permitting and project development process. The site selection study provided the documentation necessary to justify the use of these sites for waste disposal and enabled Homestake Mining Co. to anticipate and integrate environmental concerns with agency requirements into the planning process.

THE introduction of the logarithmic sector method of quantitative spectrography by Scheibe and Neuhäusser in 1928, and the subsequent .modification and improvement of the method by Twyman and Simeon, would seem to have marked yet a further advance in quantitative spec-trum analysis and its industrial application, inasmuch as it offers a simple means of eliminating some of the uncertainties inherent in the older methods based upon mere visual comparison of line intensities. In their recent admirable review of the position and capabilities of industrial spectroscopy, Brownsdon and van Someren1 say: Ways and means of facilitating the comparison of line-intensities so as to give them numerical values are helpful, and of these a logarithmic sector rotating in front of the slit appears to he one of the most promising; . . . the success recently experienced by the author in using this method for the examination of steels and solutions of metallic salts prompted him ,to investigate its possible use in estimating the impurities commonly present in crude and refined tin. The results of this investigation are submitted in the present paper. Details of a number of spectrographic analyses of tin for various impurities have already been published. Thus, Schweitzer2 describes the spectrographic examination of tin for lead, bismuth and cadmium, and was able to distinguish between such atomic percentages as 0.01, 0.05, 0.10, 0.30, 0.60, 1.20, 3.00 and 10.00. Negresco3 investigated the bismuth content of tin over a range of from 0.0005 to 35 per cent. Meggers, Kiess and Stimson4 compare spectrographic and chemical analyses of tin metal for copper, lead, iron, zinc, silver, nickel and bismuth. They stress also the value of spectrum analysis in the examination of tin used for boiler plugs, where the requirements that only minute quantities of impurities shall be present render the chemical analysis both tedious and difficult.

Thermal arrest, hot-stage microscopy, and transtnission electron microscopy techniques have been employed to study the transformations in low-carbon iron and Fe-9 pct Ni alloys. In continuous cooling experiments, each alloy transforms at an essentially constant temperature for cooling rates below the critical rate required for martensite formation. However, high-tenzperature transformation in pure iron takes place by a different mechanism than that in the 9 pct Ni alloys. Pure iron exhibits an equi-a a structure with a low and random dislocation density while the 9 pct Ni alloy exhibits a cell or lathlike substructure analogous to that of low-carbon martensite. This same substructure characterizes upper bainite in higher-carbon inaterials. UNTIL relatively recently, diffusionless transformations have been considered to take place by the same mechanism and have been termed mar-tensitic transformations.l-3 The most characteristic feature2 of this mode of transformation is the shape change produced by a shear deformation and growth of the product phase frequently occurs at an extremely high velocity approaching that of an elastic wave.4'5 A different mechanism of diffusionless transformation was recognized first in Cu-Ga and other copper-base alloys.6,7 From the absence of surface tilting in these alloys, it has been concluded that transformation is not accomplished by the cooperative shear displacements that occur in mar-tensitic reactions. Transformation presumably takes place by the rapid movement of an incoherent interface which is capable of propagating across parent grain boundaries. Although the transformation is diffusionless in the macroscopic sense, advancement of these interfaces is accomplished by an atom by atom rearrangement. Transformations of this type therefore require thermal activation and are generally operative only at high temperature. Although requiring short-range diffusion at the interface, propagation still occurs so rapidly that the reaction cannot be suppressed with normal cooling rates.7 The resulting microstructures exhibit large, irregular-shaped regions of the product phase, which are essentially free of crystallographic features. Consequently, these reactions have been termed massive transformations. Transformation by the massive mechanism has been reported to occur in ferrous systems involving pure iron and binary alloys of iron with nickel, chromium, and silicon by Gilbert and owen.' The Fe-Ni system is of special interest in that the massive transformation was observed in alloys with less than 15 pct Ni while alloys having more than about 28 pct Ni transformed by the conventional mar-tensitic mechanism. By employing cooling rates substantially higher than those used by Gilbert and Owen, Swanson and Parr have been able to suppress the massive transformation in alloys with 0 to 10 pct Ni9 and produce martensite as revealed by surface relief. The massive transformation in the alloys having less than 15 pct Ni was identified by the lack of surface relief and an irregular rather than clearly acicular microstructure.' Speich and Swann, using thin-foil electron microscopy, identified three distinctly different structures10 in quenched binary Fe-Ni alloys. From 0 to 4 pct Ni the structure consisted of blocky grains of a with a low and random dislocation density. Alloys with 4 to 25 pct Ni exhibited a cell structure with a high dislocation density; and at greater than 25 pct Ni the structure consisted of internally twinned plates. The structural change at approximately 4 pct Ni suggests that alloys with low nickel content transform by a different mechanism than those with intermediate nickel contents and the transition from the cellular to the internally twinned structures at approximately 25 pct Ni is analogous to the transition from needles to internally twinned plates that occurs over a narrow range of carbon contents in Fe-C martensites.11,12 Conventional bainitic and martensitic modes of austenite decomposition operate in ternary Fe-C-Ni alloys having less than 10 pct Ni. This investigation was conducted in order to explore the conditions under which the massive, bainitic, and martensitic transformations occur and the relationships between these modes of decomposition.

It is customary to ascribe two general modes of occurrence to natural gas, namely, shale gas which, as the name indicates, is found in shale, and reservoir gas, which occurs in sandstone, conglomerate and dolomitic limestone. Both of these types are found in the Cleveland district. The shale gas has been produced on a small scale for a long period of years, probably dating back as far as 1883. Shale gas is a low-pressure gas, small in volume with variable pressure, and is limited to no definite horizon. It is generally independent of oil, may last for a long time, and is not dependent to any great extent on the structure of the rocks. There are many such wells in the district which range from 400 to 1,840 ft. in depth, although most have been completed at about 800 ft. This indicates that the wells pass through the Cleveland and Chagrin shales into the Huron or Portage shale of the Upper Devonian. During the last 2 years great interest has developed in a deeper-seated reservoir gas. What is commonly called reservoir gas is generally a high-pressure gas occurring in large volume at a definite horizon. Oil may, or may not, be associated with the gas, and in most regions in which reservoir gas is found, the geological structure is of great importance. This type of gas occurs in all large fields such as those of West Virginia which have been supplying Cleveland until the recent discovery of local gas at great depths in commercial amounts. Historical Outline The oldest well producing reservoir gas in the district was drilled in 1886 in Newburg for what was then known as the Cleveland Rolling Mill Co. This well was 3,000 ft. deep, and was thought to have reached the "Clinton" formation. Two "sands" showing small amounts of oil were recorded in the Niagara limestone at depths of 2,658 and 2,686 ft. This is about the horizon of the so-called Newburg sand which has proved to be of some importance as a source of gas and oil by recent drilling operations. The rock pressure was reported to be 400 to 500 lb. per square inch, but since the volume was only 14,000 to 16,000 cu. ft. daily, the well was not only considered unsuccessful but was thought to prove the absence of high-pressure gas in commercial quantities in the Cleveland district.

A. D. Le Claire and R. S. Barnes (Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Harwell, Didcot, Berks., England)-—This much awaited paper admirably confirms that the Kirkendall effect is a true diffusion phenomenon and likely to be found in all diffusing systems. The most likely explanation put forward so far to account for the shift of interface is that the two components of the system, diffusing in opposite directions, do so with unequal rates so that there is a net loss of material from that half of the diffusion zone rich in the more rapidly diffusing component. This loss is accompanied, and at least partly compensated for, by a closing up or decrease in volume of this latter half of the diffusion zone and an expansion of the other half so as to tend to keep constant the overall volume per atom. This is manifest as a movement of the original interface. If this is a true picture of what is taking place then there are at least two important matters requiring further study."1—The quantitative relating of the observed shift with the independently measured separate diffusion coefficients of the two diffusing species."2—A detailed study of the mechanism and characteristics of the closing up process."We would like first to make a few remarks pertinent to these topics. In connection with the first of these, it is a pity that more and detailed measurements were not made on the Au-Ag system, the only one for which the separate diffusion coefficients of the two species have been measured.'" One of us (A. D. Le C.) has calculated from Johnson's results the shift to have been expected in samples D.2 and D.3. Darken4 showed that the velocity v with which the markers move is related to the separate diffusion coefficients Dau, Dag, by the eauation:"dN"v = (Dag — Dau "dx"dN"where .is the concentration gradient at the mark-ax"ers. Fine powders of lead zirconate titanate have been prepared by three different methods such as ball milling, conventional coprecipitation and spray drying. Different powders have also been prepared by changing the process variables in each method. These powders were analysed for particle size chemical composition and reactivity. DTA, TGA and x-ray analysis have been carried out to study the lead zirconate titanate formation with reference to calcination temperatures. The calcined powders were then consolidated by compaction and sintering. An attempt has bean made to explain the consolidation behaviour of these powders on the basis of powder characteristics.

IN recent years the use of high sulphur fuels and charges in steelmaking has necessitated rapid methods of slag control in order to insure the production of high quality steel. Several systems of control have been discussed in the literature, and of these the method described by Philbrook, Jolly, and Henry' has received the most attention recently. In their process the hydrogen ion concentration of an aqueous slag suspension is determined under controlled, but arbitrary conditions. The basicity of the slag may then be derived from a previously established pH-V ratio curve. Thus, by measuring the pH, some indication of the V ratio is gained, from which significant properties of the slag may be deduced. Philbrook et al. made no claims as to the theoretical justification of their treatment, but simply offered it as a rapid means of slag control. Encouraging results caused others to study the method and publish their findings.2-5 Although there was fair agreement on the efficacy of the method, no common parameter was evolved against which pH readings could be plotted. The results of the various determinations were related to such V ratios as CaO/SiO2 and CaO/ SiO2 + P2O5 by some,'-3 while others" plotted against "excess lime." Rivet,' however, found a simple proportionality between the hydrogen ion concentration and the sulphur content of the molten steel beneath the slag. Since slag control in North American practice is largely directed toward the efficient removal of sulphur from steel, Rivet's approach to the problem had the advantage of connecting directly a property of the slag with the impurity being removed. In view of the diversity of parameters used it seemed probable that some fundamental point was being overlooked in seeking a relationship. Examination of the literature revealed that much emphasis had been laid on experimental detail but scant attention paid to the fundamental aspects of the hydrolysis of the aqueous slag suspension. Consequently the present investigation was undertaken with the object of rectifying this deficiency and deriving, if possible, a parameter of general application. Petrographic studies on several matured Canadian open-hearth steel slags have shown that their major constituents are dicalcium and tricalcium silicates set in a complex matrix of iron oxides and ferrites. These phases are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Free lime is frequently encountered in slags, but is not an equilibrium phase since on continued heating it dissolves forming silicates or ferrites. Thus, it appeared that a study of the hydrolysis of the major phases in steel slags would be profitable. The experimental technique used in the present work was a modification of that described by the other workers.'- Electrical conductivity measurements were also made on the suspensions, since Smith et al." had claimed advantages for this method in their paper on slag control. IT IS generally recognized that the natural gas absorbed in petroleum plays the leading r6le in moving the oil through the sands to the well and supplies the energy that delivers the oil to the surface when the wells are flowing. It is the purpose of this paper to note the amount of oil that could be lifted by this gas if 100 per cent. efficiency were obtained and the efficiencies actually obtained in the use of this gas. An article in MINING AND METALLURGY,' stated that in a Wyoming field, with a pressure of 300 lb. per sq. in., there would be absorbed 65 cu. ft. of gas per barrel, or 1.55 cu. ft. per gal. of oil. The writer does not know if data have been obtained, by experiment, for pressures beyond those indicated in this article, therefore, for the purpose of illustration, he has projected this curve to obtain figures for pressures greater than 300 lb., although probably experiment will show that the extended line is not quite correct.

IS there a quick way of assessing the conditions of a newly exposed roof in a coal mine? This has always been a nagging question. The problem is that unless effective controls are established as soon as possible, it becomes extremely difficult to extract coal safely and economically from conventional underground milling operations. Until recently, little has been done to provide a means of measuring the structural behavior of a coal mine roof while the face advances during actual production. (In fact, most measurements have always been made after the fact or during a roof pull-down where the roof is actually caused to fail with no support.)

THE integrated intensity X-ray method of meas-uring retained austenite concentrations in hardened plain carbon or low alloy steels as proposed by Averbach and Cohen1,2 has the advantages of being a highly sensitive and precise quantitative method. The various phases of this method have been studied and several modifications have been developed which aid not only in reducing the time required per determination, but which also increase the possible accuracy of the method. A fundamental step in the original calculation procedure is to plot V.A(?) curves for austenite and martensite and to obtain VM/VA ratios from these curves.' In taking this ratio the absorption factor A (8) drops out since it is constant for a. given diffraction angle 8. The reason for eliminating A(?) in this manner is because it is apparently assumed

The beneficiation of a scheelite ore by flotation was investigated with emphasis on determining optimum conditions for obtaining maximum grade and recovery in the rougher concentrates. Variables such as pH, time, temperature, and pulp density during conditioning were plotted against the grade and recovery of the rougher concentrates. Several gangue regulators were tried, and several methods of cleaning rougher concentrates are described.

The ammonia leach for copper recovery is discussed from historical and current practice standpoints. The chemistry of the system is presented together with Eh-pH and copper-ammonia solubility curves. A list of metals forming ammine complexes is presented. The advantages and disadvantages of the ammonia leach as applied to copper recovery in conjuction with modern liquid ion exchange techniques are compared.

BRÜCKNER's revolving cylinders for roasting ores, etc., are now used at a number of the mills in Colorado and New Mexico, for the purpose of roasting and chloridizing silver ores, with highly satisfactory results, even from those cylinders of small size, erected before the many improvements of recent date. As examples of the larger improved cylinders, reference can be made to those erected at the Tennessee Reduction Works, Silver City, Grant County, New Mexico, and those which were built, in 1871, at the celebrated Caribou Silver Mill and Mines, Colorado, a mining enterprise which has proved so satisfactory as to have been lately sold to a Holland company for an enormous amount. These cylinders, as now constructed by Messrs. Lane & Bodley, of Cincinnati,, Ohio, are shown in Plate III, in which Fig. 1 is an elevation in perspective, Fig. 2 a longitudinal, and Fig. 3 a trans¬verse section. Fig. 4 is a sketch of a mill, with Brückner's cylinder. The exterior of the cylinder is a shell of boiler iron, 12 feet long by 5 feet 6 inches in diameter. The ends are partially closed with similar material, leaving in the centre a circular opening about 2 feet in diameter, bounded by a flange projecting several inches.. Upon one side is placed an opening closed by a hinged door. Upon the outside of the cylinder are bolted three bands, as shown in Fig. 1, in which the section of the first is square, and that of the third semi¬circular; the second, or middle band, is a strong spur gear. Passing through the cylinder are six pipes parallel to one another, in a plane at an angle of 15° to the axis of the cylinder; these pipes also lie in this plane at an angle of from 30° to 35° to the longitudinal, axis of the plane, as shown in Fig. 2, where the internal arrangement of the cylinder is seen, a perforated diaphragm being formed through part of the cylinder by means of perforated plates placed between
