Discussion of the paper of A. P. WATT, presented at the St. Louis meeting, October, 1917, and printed in Bulletin No. 130, October, 1917, pp. 1476 to 1563. THE CHAIRMAN (0. M. _BILHARZ, Miami, Okla.).-Mr. Watt's reference to sorting or hand-picking of the ore in the lead district, which is being introduced at Mine La Motte, is especially interesting. I believe, from my former experience in the district, that hand-picking should be practised to some extent by all the companies in the Lead Belt. I know that a great many thousand tons containing only very small amounts of lead are passed through the mills, which, of course, is not to the advantage of milling machinery. That procedure may be Warranted at times of high prices, but I think that hand-picking should ordinarily be adopted to some extent: ERNEST GAYFORD, Salt Lake City, Utah.-On page 1525, speaking of the settling of slime previous to treatment either on slime tables or by flotation, Mr. Watt states: "The settling area allowed per ton of dry slime varies from 11 to 16 sq. ft.-an average for the district would be about 13 sq. ft. of settling area per ton of dry slime. This figure applies when the, discharge contains 20 per cent. solids." Mr. Ramsey, of the Dorr company, is here and I would like to ask him whether a settling area of 13 sq. ft. per ton of dry slime per 24 hr. is not considerably above the average area of Dorr settling tanks, and whether 20 per cent. solids is not above the general dilution for that' capacity? I should also like to know what is the general average on slimes of that character. E. R. RAMSEY, Denver, Colo.-An allowance of 13 sq. ft. per ton does seem rather large. I am not familiar with the settling characteristics of the dolomitic gangue, but as an average over the country, I should say that 6 or 7 sq. ft. would be nearer correct for discharge at that consistency. DELANO, Bowie Terre, Mo.-We have had an opportunity to try our tanks at the highest capacity, and-find that by thickening the slime to 30 per cent. solids we average 12 sq. ft. per ton of dry slime. ERNEST GAYFORD.-DO you find any definite ratio between the thickness of the discharge and the settling capacity of the tank? Do you consider that the tank has a larger capacity if the discharge is 3 to 1 than if it is 50 per cent. solids? L. A. DELANO.-I think it has greater capacity with the thinner discharge. It depends a good deal on the density of feed to the tanks; in our case the feed contains 2.5 per cent. solids.

STUDY of the plasticity of germanium or other semiconductor crystals affords unusual opportunities to extend our knowledge of deformation mechanisms. Crystals are available having extraordinary perfection and very high purity. They deform by slip on the systems {111} <110>,1-3 as do crystals of the simple face-centered-cubic structure. Dislocations generated in them during slip are easily revealed in the form of etch pits on either (111) or (100) surfaces.4,5 This fact alone makes possible more detailed studies of mechanisms than is usually the case with metals but, even further, the effect of deformation on their electrical conductivity is very large compared with metals. This comes about not only because the mobility of the charge carriers is reduced, as in deformed metals, but also because the number of these carriers is greatly altered. This latter effect seems closely related to the formation of both line and point imperfections during deformation and thus provides a needed tool for the study of the kinds and distributions of these imperfections. Other investigators have deformed germanium at elevated temperatures by bending,1, 6-8 compres-sion,6, 0,10 tension,2,3,6,11,12 torsion,23 and indentation." Wang and Alexander" have also reported successful indentation at room temperature. Dislocation etch pits consequent to deformation have been observed and studied.7,8,10,18,14,20 The experiments to be de- scribed here include principally the compression and the subsequent annealing of germanium with concomitant studies of etch pits, microstructures, and electrical properties. Both single crystals and heavily twinned specimens were used. Some indentation studies are included. Experimental Methods Plastic compression was effected in the apparatus shown schematically in Fig. 1. It consists of two tantalum platens contained in a helium atmosphere and so arranged that pressure can be applied by a hydraulic press. The specimen between the platens is heated by the surrounding furnace. The specimen is usually a small crystal cube about 0.30 in. on an edge. A control specimen is always inserted so, that it is subject to the same thermal cycle as the one being deformed. This serves to detect any impurity contamination that might accompany the thermal treatment. For high temperature work, where such impurity contamination often occurs, the specimens were first plated with gold whenever subsequent electrical properties were to be determined. This method" is effective in preventing significant contamination of germanium up to temperatures at least as high as 750°C, as evidenced by the constancy of the electrical conductivities of control specimens subjected to the same heat treatments. The total range of temperature used for deformation was from 375°C, the lowest at which significant flow was observed, up to 900°C. The production history of a gas-cap-drive reservoir was reproduced by calculations, and predictions were made for operations under primary depletion, pressure maintenance by gas injection, and pressure maintenance by water injection. Although the general equations used in this analysis have been available to the industry for a number of years, the procedure has not had extensive use because of the unusually large time requirements for developing numerical results. The use of digital computing equipment for processing the calculation work generally reduced the time usually required for an extensive analysis of this type. Calculation techniques were developed that were equally applicable for solving the gar-cap-drive problem, whether digital computing equipment or desk calculators are used. These techniques are outlined and the procedures are illustrated by the field problem. INTRODUCTION The analysis of a gas-cap-drive res-ervoir requires the simultaneous solution of the volumetric balance1 and displacement2 equations. Equations for the analysis of combination drive reservoirs were presented by Wooddy and Moscrip in a previous paper." These equations permit the evaluation of possible operating processes in order that the optimum method of pro- ducing the reservoir may be determined. Although these equations represent the basic technique known for the detailed analysis of gas-capdrive reservoirs, the calculation processes are quite complex and time consuming; hence, the procedure has not had extensive use. Recently, these equations were satisfactorily applied with the aid of a digital computer to investigate the completion history of a gas-cap-drive reservoir under the following operating methods: primary depletion, depletion under full pressure maintenance by gas injection, and depletion under full pressure maintenance by water injection. The use of digital computing equipment substantially reduced the time necessary for making the computations and permitted a more concise investigation of the reservoir&apos;s depletion history than was possible when the desk calculator was used. This more rigorous investigation also permitted a detailed analysis of the calculation procedures necessary in the solution of the gas-cap-drive problem. This paper outlines the procedure of analyzing a gas-cap-drive reservoir and illustrates the process with an actual field problem. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RESERVOIR ANALYZED Production in the field under consideration is obtained from a Frio formation of Oligocene age at a depth of approximately 5,740 ft sub-sea. The accumulation, which is bounded on the flanks by strand lines, is semirectangular in shape with gentle narrowing toward the base of the structure as shown by the sand limits and completion map in Fig. 1. The reservoir development indicates an oil column of 319 ft that is defined by gas-oil and oil-water contacts. Basic data relative to the characteristics of the formation and the formation fluids are shown in Table 1. The formation exhibits considerable shaliaess and thinning near the oil-water contact indicating that little or no benefit will be received from natural water influx. This is substantiated by the fact that wells completed near the original oil-water contact have not produced water. A sizeable gas cap is present; however, considerable faulting is in evidence, and it is believed that only a limited portion of the gas cap will aid in oil displacement and pressure maintenance. Although the reservoir was in an initial stage of depletion, it was believed that as soon as the equilibrium gas saturation in the oil zone was exceeded and a number of upstructure wells were invaded by the expanding gas cap, the resulting high gas-oil ratio production would rapidly dissipate the natural drive and lead to limited oil recoveries and inefficient reservoir operation. NEVER before have the annual company reports in the mineral industry field exhibited the typo-graphical art so abundantly as does the current crop. Time was when most company reports made a drab appearance and dry reading, mostly confined to financial data and text that gave little information to the public or technical men. Now, the dollar statistics assume less importance. Considerable information is given on what is going on at the company&apos;s plants, new equipment being installed, new methods, properties under development, ore reserves and grades, and similar information of interest to professional men working in the field. We have one suggestion for further improvement: The names of the officers and directors of the company are always given, but only a few companies give the names of the principal operating officials. We think, in the case of a mine for example, that the name of the general manager, his assistant, the mine and mill superintendents, and any other top operating officials who have been largely responsible for the success of operations, are worthy of mention. The reports are now widely read and this recognition is due them. Conspicuous among the annual reports that we happen to have seen, in point of typographical attractiveness, are that of the Texas Co., celebrating its fiftieth anniversary with a gold-plated cover and gold printing inside; and that of Noranda Mines Ltd., with a red and black cover that would attract attention anywhere. Comment on economics, taxes, and labor give an excellent picture of what our industry is facing. Consider the following, from the report of the Union Oil Co. of California:

The paper presents a stability investigation of shaft intersections and pit bottom roadways in the vicinity of upcast and downcast shafts at a colliery in the U.K. Aschemeof instrumentation was aimed at monitoring the strata displacement surrounding the pit bottom roadways and shaft intersections with a view to ascertaining the origin of the strata movement and effectiveness of the control measures. The bore- hole instrumentation results together with a theoretical analysis suggested that the cause of instability could be attributed to the drivage of a roadway within the shaft pillar. A semi-empirical technique was used to calculate the amount of support resistance required to reinforce the pillar to take additional abutment load. A rock bolting system was designed to provide a required increase in thrust capacity of the roadway support. The results indicated that roadway closure was effectively controlled after installation of bolts indicating efficacy of the control measures adopted.

EXTRUSION of aluminum alloys in this country is performed mainly by direct extrusion, therefore this paper is confined only to factors affecting the rate of extrusion by this method. Many factors affect the rate of extrusion of aluminum alloys. It is the purpose of this paper to present a discussion on the factors that are subject to technical control. Most of them are closely related, so that a clear-cut distinction between them is rather difficult. However, an attempt will be made to evaluate the effect of each factor separately, as far as possible. The most important factors only will be considered, and these will be discussed in detail under three general headings: (I) characteristics of the equipment, (2) size and structure of the ingot, and (3) temperature of ingot, cylinder, and other parts. It is a well established fact&apos; that the pressure and the speed of extrusion are related and are exponential functions of one another. Therefore, whenever a certain condition tends, for instance, to increase the pressure required for extrusion, it will reduce the extrusion speed if the pressure is maintained constant. For this reason, in this paper the effect of various conditions is expressed either in regard to their effect on the pressure required or the extrusion speed. Another established fact is the relationship between the temperature of the material being extruded and the pressure required to extrude. According to Schishokin,2 this relationship is of the exponential type, and as the temperature is increased the pressure required is decreased. It would seem from the preceding that the greatest rates of extrusion can be obtained by the use of higher temperatures. However, as is well known, other factors intervene to limit the rate of extrusion of aluminum alloys when increasing the temperature. These factors will be discussed in detail later. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EQUIPMENT The capacity of the press determines the maximum unitary pressure that can be applied for any given cylinder diameter. Pressures used for extrusion of aluminum alloys range from approximately 50,000 lb. per sq. in. to 150,000 lb. per sq. in., dependent upon the alloy and the size of the shape extruded. Higher pressures could be used to advantage, but existing steels limit pressures employed in the production of extrusions. Numerous mechanical characteristics of the extrusion press affect extrusion rate. The most important characteristics of the press itself are: (I) sensitivity of the main pressure valve and accuracy of pressure gauges, (2) accuracy of equipment to heat the cylinder uniformly and to control cylinder temperature, and (3) accuracy of means of measuring the speed of extrusion. Computer simulation of mine ventilation system is rapidly becoming an essential tool in mine planning and design. This Paper examines the utilization of ventilation simulation techniques to evaluate the number, shape, size and layout of mine entries in a typical coal mining system. Since the mains and sub-mains serve primarily for transportation and ventilation and the ventilation system is critically important to the health and safety of the workers, there exists a great need for optimal designs in this area. Evaluation criteria could include, among others, minimization of power costs, shaft requirements and leakage. Constraints of this optimization problem include health and safety regulations and production and mine infrastructure requirements.

Service failures in brass condenser tubes are often due to corrosion. One of the commonest types of corrosion reveals a surface structure of redeposited copper.&apos; The study of the effect of alloy addition agents in preventing this kind of corrosion has received impetus from the extensive publication of Bengough and May.2 The mechanism of such inhibition gauged from immersion corrosion,2 cell corrosion,3 and electrolytic potential4 measurements is controversial. This controversy may be attributed in part to a lack of definite knowledge5 of the actual nature of the initial films formed in corrosion experiments. In our own corrosion work on copper and 70-30 brass this lack became apparent and necessitated an examination of surface films by X-ray and electron diffraction methods. The present paper is but an introduction to the subject of inhibition and reports the structure of films formed in active corrodents. Experimental Procedure The arsenical coppers and brasses used in this investigation were made by one of the writers* in the plant of the Revere Copper and Brass Co. at Rome, N. Y. Standard commercial melting practice was followed. O.F.H.C. copper and electrolytic zinc were used and all arsenic additions were made by additions of a master copper alloy. The final analyses are given in Table I. Likewise, the extrusion, cold-rolling, and intermediate anneals employed followed standard usage. Final heat-treatments were given to all materials to produce a similar grain size (0.035 to 0.045 mm. for brass and 0.015 to 0.025 for copper) for the alloys containing various percentages of arsenic. Samples 1/2 by M by 1/4 in. were cut from sheet material resurfaced and finished with 0000 metal-lographic papers. The surfaces were all degreased in alcohol and benzine before immersion. After immersion in the corrodent, they were washed gently in tap water, dipped first in alcohol and then in pure benzine and allowed to dry in the diffraction apparatus. The present list of problems relating to the physical chemistry of steelmaking has been prepared by the Committee on the Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking, from answers to a questionnaire submitted to a number of metallurgists engaged in both industrial and educational work throughout the United States. The purpose of the project is to make available to research laboratories a list of problems, all reduced to their simplest terms, the solution of which would aid in creating a better understanding of the steelmaking process. It is not intended to restrict the problems to practical steelmaking. The list also includes the study of the properties, and their correlation, as well as the physical and chemical reactions, of all substances that occur or that may be in any way associated with steelmaking operations, such as metallic substances, refractories, nonmetallic inclusions, and the constituents of slags. Many of the problems can be carried out in university or other research laboratories. Others may be most successfully attacked by cooperation of the research men with the operating personnel. It is the Committee&apos;s earnest wish that this cooperation be fostered. It is requested that investigators who are working on any of the problems listed and who anticipate future publication of their results, notify the Secretary of the Committee that such investigation is in progress. Suggested additions to the present list are also requested. The Committee is undertaking to act as a clearing house for information regarding the topics in this field that are being actually studied. Phelps Dodge&apos;s 60,000 tpd Morenci Concentrator has been in operation since 1942. The integrating of process control applications into the concentrator began in 1972. A process control system is presently on-line controlling 30 primary grinding circuits and all reagent additions. The system consists of a centralized control room process control Computer, on-stream X-ray analyzer, on-stream particle size analyzers and an operator interface. This paper describes the process control system&apos;s development, control concepts and its influence on the concentrator performance.

A. Gittins and R. C. Gifkins (University of Mel-houvne)— Evidence from somewhat similar experiments to those described in this paper has led us to the conclusion that possibility 2) of the four listed on p. 319 is a description of what happens in grain boundary sliding. That is, sliding is limited by accommodation deformation, it being necessary to the Continuance of sliding that this accommodation should take place. An example of such accommodation, though probably not the most important, is fold formation at triple points. The evidence and arguments for this point of view are set out in Refs. 14 to 16. In particular, an experiment with a lead bicrys-tall5 seems to support point 2) rather than 3). In creep of this specimen it was found that at least 90 pct of the extension of a zone 0.3 mm wide at the boundary was supplied by sliding at the boundary. The sliding was localized in a region at the boundary very much smaller than 0.3 mm, in fact, in a region too narrow to resolve optically. In poly crystalline Specimens&apos; there appears to be a surface effect, as found by Rachinger," but it appears that this may not manifest itself at low strains. "Low strains" means <10 pct for a Pb-TI alloy, <2.5 pct for magnesium or "Magnox" A12 alloy, or <40 pct for a 0 brass. Up to this extension the sliding, measured by the mean vertical step at boundaries, is proportional to extension. We are able to say this with some confidence, since the error bars on our points are statistically derived. Our results would lead us to think that the error bars on other work, including that of Mullendore and Grant, are much too large at low strains to show this

An experimental and theoretical treatment of the depressing effect of inorganic electrolytes on the amine flotation of quartz is presented. Experimental data obtained for the amine flotation of quartz as a function of pH with potassium nitrate as depressant was used to test the models for the effectiveness of inorganic ions as depressants. The validity of commonly used assumptions are examined. The surface tension data obtained for dodecylammonium acetate solutions as a function of KNO3, concentration indicated that the collector adsorption on bubble cannot be neglected in the treatments, since this adsorption changes significantly with the addition of the inorganic electrolyte. It also indicated the possibility of significant changes in the specific adsorption potential of the collector occurring with the addition of inorganic electrolytes.

Large-grain specimens of iodide titanium prepared metal-lographically were stain etched using the technique of New York University as modified by Watertown Arsenal Laboratories. Orientations of grains showing an abnormal response to stain etching were determined by back-reflection X-ray techniques. X-ray results showed that a-titanium grains, oriented such that their basal planes were parallel to the polished surface, have a slower reactivity to stain etching than any other orientation. Grains oriented such that their basal planes made small angles with the polished surface exhibited reaction rates between that of the true basal orientation and the normal rate. As the angle with the surface increases the reactivity increases up to a maximum angle of 14 deg. Basal planes making an angle with the surface of greater than 14 deg show normal reactivity to stain etching. These data, plus work on polycrystalline specimens, indicate that the oxidation rate of titanium might be reduced by correct alignment of crystal planes. ThE earliest observed phenomenon in the micrography of titanium was the occurrence of a grains which exhibited no birefringency. Even though a titanium possesses a hexagonal-close-packed structure and should be optically anisotropic, it can appear optically isotropic, when the crystal is so oriented that its intersection with the polished surface is perpendicular to the axis of symmetry. During the develoment of color staining techniques for titanium: it was noted that the a phase did not stain uniformly. Staining of specimens of commercially pure titanium resulted in a micro-structure of blue-colored grains, among which were randomly oriented a few grains exhibiting colors between the initial yellow and the final blue color. Under polarized light, these off-colored grains appeared to be optically isotropic. More intense study with polarized light, however, showed only the yellow grains to be isotropic. The intermediate colored grains exhibited weak birefringency, which at first glance is not detectable due to the strong birefringency of the surrounding structure. Aminoff2 and Straumanis3 have previously shown that in zinc the basal orientation is less reactive than other orientations. Leidheiser4 showed the same thing to be true for the hexagonal-close -packed configuration of cobalt. Thus, it would appear that the basal-plane orientation is responsible for the abnormality in stained titanium. Later work by Leidheiser5 on cobalt has shown that other planes besides the basal plane exhibited reaction rates slower than the normal rate. Reported planes were the (100), the (1011) and several planes making small angles with the basal plane. The last observance appears not to be due to the reactivity of the reported plane but due to the reactivity of the basal plane which is very close to being parallel to the surface. There are, then, two possible explanations for the range of colors observed in stain-etched a titanium. Since extensive research on the effect of orientation on surface reaction has failed to provide any definite trend, these two explanations are not adequate in themselves. Planes showing the retarded reactivity differ not only for different crystal structures but for metals of the same crystal structure and even for different reactions of the same metal. Tragert,6 Leidheiser,7 Tammann,6 and wagner9 have shown copper to exhibit retarded reactivity on the (111) plane. THE third year of Government exploration f or potash by the U. S. Geological Survey and-the U. S. Bureau of Mines under the authorization of the act approved June 25, 1926 (Public 424-69th Cong.) is drawing to a close. The results thus far obtained are thought to be sufficiently interesting and satisfactory to justify the presentation of a brief preliminary account of the work. REVIEW OF EARLIER EXPLORATION The general geologic similarity of the Permian basin of Texas and New Mexico to the potash field of Germany had long ago suggested the possibility of the presence of potash salts somewhere in that basin, but petroleum exploration was then making little headway there and the necessary data could not be obtained. The discovery by Udden in 1912 of potash in brine from the Spur well in Dickens County, Texas, was the first direct evidence of its presence. In 1915-17 the U. S. Geological Survey drilled a test well with standard tools at Cliff side near Amarillo, but failed to find potash. Nevertheless, an observer has been kept in the field, at first in cooperation with the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology but since 1922 by the Survey alone, to `secure data and samples from oil and gas tests. Since the discovery of oil in Reagan County in 1923 exploration by drilling has been rapidly extended to many parts of western Texas and southeastern New Mexico. The identification of the potash-bearing mineral polyhalite was first announced by the Geological Survey in June, 1921, the material having come from cuttings from the Bryant well in Midland County and the Burns well in Dawson County, Texas. Successive discoveries and announcements of similar purport aroused widespread interest in potash exploration, which culminated in the action by Congress already noted.

The trend initiated in January 1936, of stabilized gasoline prices, increased demand and extraordinary drilling activity, continued in California during the year 1937. Crude prices were maintained during the year at the highest level since September 1930. Wildcat activity with resultant new discoveries and development of proven acreage were greater than in any year since 1928. Many fields in California in former years have been produced at full capacity, with consequent loss of reservoir energy, but at the present time continued activity is maintained to develop adequate reserves, so that production in these fields can be taken at a rate to correspond with good operating practice. Naturally, this good operating practice will be influenced to some degree by gas outlets and, in certain instances perhaps, by oil outlets. In any event, these last two controlling features will result in favorable rather than detrimental operation. In fields producing from great depths, ultimate production will be practically limited to the flowing and compressor life of the well, since there is as yet no economical method for pumping wells below depths of approximately 7000 ft. Experience has shown, however, that such pumping difficulties will be overcome and that production secured by pumping will add some to reserves established on the flowing life of the wells. California continued to operate under voluntary curtailment, but with unlimited transfers of allowable between various fields. Even though there was at all times considerable production above the Umpire&apos;s established quota, a constantly increasing demand reduced storage during the year. This increasing demand was due mainly to the rapid rise in Pacific foreign shipments from May to September. It is questionable, however, whether this favorable condition will be maintained over a prolonged period. (See Fig. 1.) A great deal has been written of late regarding the loss of silver in assaying; very discordant results have been published by different writers, and much uncertainty exists concerning even approximate losses in a careful determination of silver, as represented by a fire-assay. In the present paper it has been the aim of the writer to determine as accurately as possible the losses sustained by silver, under certain specified conditions, during the process of cupellation. Such losses are well known to be due to absorption by the cupel and volatilization. The conditions, however, which govern these losses are not believed by the writer to be so well understood. The most important of these are : 1. The effect of variable quantities of silver used. 2. The temperature of cupellation. 3. The character and quantity of impurities in the lead button. 4. The weight of the lead button. 5. The nature of the cupel. The following experiments were made for the purpose of demonstrating, as nearly as possible, the total loss of silver in cupellation under the most favorable conditions to be obtained in commercial assaying. Chemically pure silver and pure lead were taken. The latter was obtained from test-lead, first melted into a bar, from which pieces of the desired weight were cut and accurately weighed. The experiments recorded in this paper were planned by the writer, but executed throughout by Mr. J. N. Walker, whose ability as an accurate, careful and painstaking assayer is too well known and recognized throughout the West to require any further endorsement from me.

The zone-melting process in which redistribution of solute in a solid bar is effected by the passage of a molten zone is considered mathematically. Simple approximate techniques are developed for computing the manner in which redistribution occurs as molten zones continue to pass. The introduction of the "zone-melting flux" provides valuable insight into the nature of the phenomenon, as well as a central mathematical theme in terms of which the process can be discussed. Curves are presented for typical and general cases. AN extremely efficient purification technique was described recently by Pfann.1 Known as zone refining, it consisted of the slow passage of a series of molten zones, produced by external heaters, through a long solid ingot of the substance to be purified. Equations were given for the maximum separation attainable, and a numerical computation method was described for obtaining the concentration in the ingot after a given number of zone passes. The present paper offers an interpretation of the physical nature of zone melting in terms of a transport process in which formal diffusive and convec-tive flows occur. This interpretation, in addition to providing insight into the physical nature of the process, also provides a basis for its mathematical treatment. From this basis, useful equations are developed for the solute concentration in the ingot as a function of the number of zone passes. These are applicable particularly where large numbers of passes are necessary and where numerical computational methods might be laborious. All considerations will deal with the limiting form of the process, described by Pfann,&apos; in which: 1—Diffusion in the solid is considered negligible. 2—Mixing in the liquid is supposed, complete. 3—The distribution coefficient, k, measuring the ratio (at equilibrium) of solute concentration in the solid to that in the liquid is supposed, independent of composition. In general, this paper will be concerned with a bar of uniform (actually unit) cross section, ex- tending in the x-direction from x = 0 to x = L, where L may be infinite. Zone melting is a transport process, and as such must admit of interpretation in terms of a flux of transported quantity. However, the progress of operation is not measured in units of time but in terms of the number of completed zone passes. Consequently, the zone-melting flux will be a rate, per unit pass, rather than per unit time. The description of this flux and the examination of its properties is given below. Based on theoretical and experimental evidence a discussion follows of the behavior of phosphorus -bearing iron ores in the R-N Direct Reduction Process and suggestions are made of methods of reducing the amount of phosphorus in the metallic end product. In ferrous metallurgy a direct reduction process is one in which iron ores are reduced to metallic iron with gaseous or solid reductants without the appearance of a liquid phase. A number of attractive features have induced several companies and government agencies to invest in the development of direct reduction processes. A summary of all direct reduction processes up to 1954 has been given by Barrett,&apos; and Wiberg,2 and Willems3 have reviewed the most recent developments in this rapidly expanding field. Many difficulties have been encountered in direct reduction processes and the nature of these difficulties has varied from process to process. One problem common to almost all of them is the removal of phosphorus which is one of the reasons for the rather pessimistic outlook given by some government publications4&apos;5 to direct reduction processes. In this paper an attempt is made to give a theoretical explanation of the variations in phosphorus removal observed in the R-NY Direct Reduction Process. However, many conclusions are general enough to be applicable to other processes. Most iron ores treated by the R-N process yield products lower in phosphorus than the original ore. A qualitative account of the factors has been given by Stewart, Reed, and Herasymenkoe but the erratic removal of phosphorus from some ores and the general importance of this problem make a more careful analysis of the theoretical aspects desirable.
